- 1:16Speaker 4: Welcome ladies, and gentlemen to let's talk with Curlee and
- 1:19Speaker 4: uh my co host Hollis Lewis and Lisa Odie are here.
- 1:24Speaker 5: And hello, Hello, and we have a.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Very very interesting conversation that we've had since we actually
- 1:33Speaker 4: got into the studio. When we got into the building,
- 1:35Speaker 4: we've been we've been kind of talking a little bit
- 1:38Speaker 4: about injunctions.
- 1:42Speaker 6: Well the yeah a word of today.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Yeah, injunctions have been has been for sure, that's the
- 1:50Speaker 4: subject the s SAC and football programs around the around
- 1:59Speaker 4: the state. It seems to me, Hollis, and you're our
- 2:03Speaker 4: expert on this, like, wow, I want to say, done
- 2:06Speaker 4: a little research. I'm going to make the case Hollis
- 2:10Speaker 4: that you know, one of.
- 2:12Speaker 6: The things that.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I've heard someone say, you know, having the best interest
- 2:18Speaker 4: of the athletes in mine or trying to focus on
- 2:22Speaker 4: on that personally, I don't see that being the case.
- 2:25Speaker 4: But I'll come back to that as you kind of
- 2:29Speaker 4: enlighten us a little bit, give us a little bit
- 2:31Speaker 4: of background to where we're at. And I want to
- 2:33Speaker 4: start from the beginning because obviously we're going to talk
- 2:34Speaker 4: about the playoff postponement and delays and Supreme Court and
- 2:37Speaker 4: different things of that nature. But I feel like we
- 2:39Speaker 4: have to set a tone because again, this isn't like
- 2:42Speaker 4: a single event. This spawned from the very beginning, and
- 2:47Speaker 4: to me, if we look at it, it's really no
- 2:48Speaker 4: surprise where we're at now, right because I think earlier
- 2:52Speaker 4: this year, maybe even sometime last year, they were in
- 2:55Speaker 4: discussions about having a quada, which is a four quada,
- 3:00Speaker 4: a single a double a system in West Virginia for football.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Now they've done this with basketball for the last couple
- 3:05Speaker 4: of years. But I think what we have to remember
- 3:08Speaker 4: about basketball is that there's more schools playing basketball and
- 3:11Speaker 4: less players. So far as that I could see that
- 3:14Speaker 4: and it probably wouldn't be as big a problem because
- 3:16Speaker 4: it would create more competitive balance, which that was the
- 3:20Speaker 4: point of this. But I think from what we're seeing
- 3:23Speaker 4: now is that that it's.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Almost done the opposite.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Absolutely, it's done the opposite of creating competitive balance. It
- 3:30Speaker 4: at least we've we've talked several times about scores, yes,
- 3:36Speaker 4: And there's no way I would have ever thought playing
- 3:40Speaker 4: high school football that I would be playing on a
- 3:43Speaker 4: team that's gonna score eighty points or is gonna get
- 3:46Speaker 4: eighty points scored on them.
- 3:48Speaker 6: That just was never going to happen.
- 3:50Speaker 4: And I'm and I'll even go even further, I'm not
- 3:54Speaker 4: sure that the talent that we were gonna go against
- 3:58Speaker 4: would not be better than what it is now.
- 4:01Speaker 7: Yeah, right, right, And I think our assumption when we
- 4:04Speaker 7: saw these scores, at least now I'm educated, thank you
- 4:07Speaker 7: Hollis on how the point system works for the playoff.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Rankings, and we'll get into details.
- 4:12Speaker 7: Yes, yes, yes, but I think I think at the time,
- 4:15Speaker 7: whenever we were under the assumption you and I Carl
- 4:18Speaker 7: that you got points for the playoffs rankings if you
- 4:23Speaker 7: scored a certain amount in your actual play of a game, right,
- 4:27Speaker 7: And so we thought, Okay, there's a reason why these
- 4:30Speaker 7: these teams are kicking on side kicks and throwing passes
- 4:34Speaker 7: in the in the fourth quarter while they're up forty
- 4:36Speaker 7: to fifty points. So we kind of gave some grace
- 4:39Speaker 7: to those teams that were behaving that way, thinking, Okay,
- 4:42Speaker 7: they're doing it for a reason. They're doing it to
- 4:44Speaker 7: gain points for the playoffs. And then we come across
- 4:48Speaker 7: the system and how it works, and we see nothing
- 4:50Speaker 7: of the sort. As far as you know, how many
- 4:54Speaker 7: points you score in a game to be able to
- 4:57Speaker 7: you know, connect it to your your ranking for the playoff.
- 5:00Speaker 7: So we're kind of just I'm disappointed in that because
- 5:04Speaker 7: I felt like there was a reason why some of
- 5:06Speaker 7: these teams were doing the things that they were doing
- 5:09Speaker 7: on the field, as far as you know in play
- 5:12Speaker 7: against other teams, going up forty to fifty points was
- 5:15Speaker 7: because of the playoff rankings. And now that you see
- 5:18Speaker 7: that there really wasn't a legitimate, a legitimate reason to
- 5:22Speaker 7: be doing those those types of things, I'm kind of
- 5:26Speaker 7: disappointed in that, right And.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Here's the thing, well, let me let me let me
- 5:29Speaker 6: say this.
- 5:30Speaker 4: We're going to talk about the points, but far as
- 5:33Speaker 4: why they went to four A, because when we look
- 5:37Speaker 4: at for a, you have one point five million people
- 5:41Speaker 4: in West Virginia. West Virginia is losing five thousand students
- 5:46Speaker 4: per year. There was absolutely no justification in addition to
- 5:50Speaker 4: what you just said as far as competitive balance, which
- 5:53Speaker 4: they haven't created, no, not at all. And we'll talk
- 5:56Speaker 4: about the conference and that was a mess up to
- 5:59Speaker 4: far as higher relate to what's going on now. But
- 6:01Speaker 4: if we're losing five thousand students per year, we have
- 6:05Speaker 4: one point five one point six million people in the state,
- 6:07Speaker 4: and we're losing our total population. There was no reason
- 6:11Speaker 4: West Virginia is not big enough to have a four
- 6:14Speaker 4: class system.
- 6:15Speaker 6: We're just not right.
- 6:17Speaker 4: So so all the justifications that they gave originally, it
- 6:20Speaker 4: just didn't It doesn't make sense. And don't you think though,
- 6:26Speaker 4: for the average parent of a kid who plays a
- 6:31Speaker 4: high school fan of the sport, an adult speaking of
- 6:35Speaker 4: the adults, not necessarily the kids.
- 6:39Speaker 6: They they are not educated on any of this. And
- 6:44Speaker 6: so in.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Out front this might have looked good, Oh my teams
- 6:50Speaker 4: are we're four A. It does look good, and it's
- 6:54Speaker 4: the only thing. That's the only thing, because once you
- 6:57Speaker 4: get to the numbers, the numbers don't just to fight
- 7:00Speaker 4: us doing this in as sport like football again, basketball, baseball,
- 7:04Speaker 4: those are different sports. You have less players, it's different,
- 7:08Speaker 4: So I could see the competitive balance being pergnent within
- 7:12Speaker 4: those sports. But when you're talking about a football we
- 7:15Speaker 4: gotta at least have thirty to forty kids.
- 7:17Speaker 6: Like I said, we're consolidating schools every day.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Every day we're here about consolidations from because because of
- 7:24Speaker 4: low numbers, So like you're doing this off the top,
- 7:27Speaker 4: didn't make sense. Yeah, you're you're trying to grow the
- 7:31Speaker 4: football level while the student level is dropped. And the
- 7:36Speaker 4: thing is, you can't even say that because you're not
- 7:38Speaker 4: growing anything. All you're doing is just you're you're just
- 7:42Speaker 4: robbing Peter to pay Paul. You're moving the puzzle pieces around.
- 7:45Speaker 6: Right. Well, you could and couldn't listen to that point.
- 7:48Speaker 4: I think as soon as four A came out and
- 7:52Speaker 4: everybody was all these teams were in four A. What
- 7:54Speaker 4: was the first thing that happened. We're moving back down
- 7:57Speaker 4: to triple A or we're moving from triple to double.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Right right, And and that's the next point.
- 8:01Speaker 4: The next point is that the next thing that happened
- 8:03Speaker 4: in August right in the beginning of the season, is
- 8:06Speaker 4: that you had eleven schools.
- 8:08Speaker 6: You had eleven schools filing junctions.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Word of today injunctions to get back to the lower conference, right.
- 8:17Speaker 4: And the justifications was that, again, how they determined the
- 8:21Speaker 4: classification level It was this is more confused in the geometry.
- 8:25Speaker 4: They did like eighty percent with enrollment, and they split
- 8:28Speaker 4: the last twenty percent between your actual location and the
- 8:32Speaker 4: socioeconomic status of the area in which your school was
- 8:35Speaker 4: placed in whether it was urban city rule DA DA
- 8:37Speaker 4: DA DA, which is convoluted, complicated, and really didn't necessarily
- 8:42Speaker 4: make sense.
- 8:42Speaker 5: So who came up with this?
- 8:44Speaker 7: Because I mean that the triple AAA single A, that
- 8:47Speaker 7: that alignment, yes, for years, in fact, it served us
- 8:52Speaker 7: back when I was in school and beyond that, and
- 8:56Speaker 7: we had more population then. So where in the world
- 8:59Speaker 7: did we find a reason to even look at this
- 9:02Speaker 7: and start this this whole movement to do quait a?
- 9:06Speaker 4: And that's what and that's kind of the point. So
- 9:08Speaker 4: we looking at the very beginning of this, not only
- 9:11Speaker 4: is there not a point to do it, but then
- 9:13Speaker 4: when you actually the implementation of it didn't make sense.
- 9:18Speaker 4: So from so so fact one, why did you do it?
- 9:22Speaker 4: It really didn't need to happen, right, And and the
- 9:25Speaker 4: reason in which you stated it created the opposite effect.
- 9:29Speaker 4: And then the implementation of it when you go to
- 9:32Speaker 4: these factors as far as developing who's going to be
- 9:35Speaker 4: in what's classification?
- 9:37Speaker 6: That doesn't make sense?
- 9:41Speaker 8: Is it?
- 9:43Speaker 4: And and I and I was as I was reading
- 9:45Speaker 4: up on this that someone makes the comment that that
- 9:50Speaker 4: they're that we're looking out for the betterment of the athlete.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I buy I buy that in theory, but I think
- 10:00Speaker 4: the system in what you're creating.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Isn't for the kids, it's for.
- 10:06Speaker 4: You as a as a because if we have quad A,
- 10:10Speaker 4: oh gosh, West Virginia's got quade. We've been triple A
- 10:14Speaker 4: for as long as we've been and it has served
- 10:17Speaker 4: us well. Yeah, and whether and the moment we go quada,
- 10:23Speaker 4: all of a sudden.
- 10:24Speaker 5: We don't have enough teams to have a quad A well?
- 10:27Speaker 4: And when the time? When the last time you saw
- 10:30Speaker 4: eighty points? But in a high school game? But I think,
- 10:33Speaker 4: I mean, that's that's becoming a little bit more common
- 10:35Speaker 4: with the with the pace in which team score, So
- 10:38Speaker 4: I don't I'm not necessarily hung up on that. The
- 10:40Speaker 4: thing is is that what I'm saying is that if
- 10:43Speaker 4: you're going to create a for A system to a
- 10:46Speaker 4: single A system. Again, I did the average, and it's
- 10:49Speaker 4: about I think there's one hundred and fifteen hundred and
- 10:52Speaker 4: sixteen teams, so you can have about twenty eight teams
- 10:55Speaker 4: per conference. But if you're going to do that, the
- 10:58Speaker 4: implementation has to be tight so that way you don't
- 11:01Speaker 4: have these eleven injunctions and now you throw the the
- 11:05Speaker 4: the numbers off. Okay, so why why why just like
- 11:11Speaker 4: why now like like like, I mean, here we are
- 11:15Speaker 4: right before, right before the playoffs, and we do this
- 11:20Speaker 4: like now, like why, But I think, I.
- 11:24Speaker 6: Mean, help me understand that.
- 11:25Speaker 4: I think if I'm if I'm sitting in that seat,
- 11:28Speaker 4: I think if I'm sitting in day Pricey, he's executive
- 11:31Speaker 4: director of w B S S a C. So, if
- 11:33Speaker 4: I'm sitting in the seat and I'm looking regionally and
- 11:36Speaker 4: I'm saying I want to be competitive regionally, I want
- 11:39Speaker 4: to pit West Virginia on the same par as Ohio, Kentucky, whatever,
- 11:44Speaker 4: I think what I'm saying is that. So I think
- 11:46Speaker 4: if I'm thinking like that, particularly from a football which
- 11:48Speaker 4: we know is the cash cow, I'm saying four is
- 11:52Speaker 4: a good idea. However, what what happened is the implementation
- 11:57Speaker 4: of it was beyond all it was beyond awful. So
- 12:02Speaker 4: I think he's thinking from a regional and maybe a
- 12:05Speaker 4: national standpoint that this may be a good idea to
- 12:07Speaker 4: do in wes G, although the factors and the numbers
- 12:11Speaker 4: maybe don't support it.
- 12:12Speaker 6: I would, okay, So.
- 12:15Speaker 4: I would me just being a just a just a
- 12:18Speaker 4: just a just a straight up athlete, all right, with
- 12:21Speaker 4: no education thought process behind this.
- 12:24Speaker 6: One of the things that I'm thinking.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Okay, and again I'm putting myself in his place because
- 12:30Speaker 4: I'm thinking.
- 12:34Speaker 6: I don't know if I could. Why why is trip?
- 12:36Speaker 4: Why is if our numbers are low to to your
- 12:40Speaker 4: valid points of.
- 12:43Speaker 6: Dropping students, losing students.
- 12:45Speaker 4: The whole, the whole thing, all this, all this is happening,
- 12:48Speaker 4: and we want to bump up, we want to go
- 12:53Speaker 4: up a level our.
- 12:54Speaker 7: For because that we don't have enough to I mean,
- 12:58Speaker 7: in fact, if it's all about out looking like we
- 13:01Speaker 7: are on the same level as in Ohio or a Kentucky,
- 13:05Speaker 7: we're not. Population wise, We're not. We're not even as
- 13:07Speaker 7: big as they are. So then just eliminate single A
- 13:10Speaker 7: and have quad A, triple A, double A. But but
- 13:13Speaker 7: and and I want to say this, if it's about image, and.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Again, it's definitely about perception, There's no way I love
- 13:21Speaker 4: West Virginia. I'm a West Virginia athlete, born and raised
- 13:24Speaker 4: in support West Virginia athletes.
- 13:26Speaker 6: But we are not Ohio football.
- 13:28Speaker 4: No, okay, we and and and just because we tag
- 13:32Speaker 4: a number on it doesn't make it Ohio football. And
- 13:37Speaker 4: I'm sorry, here's the problem. Here's the problem. And again
- 13:40Speaker 4: I understand mister Price and whoever implemented it. I understand though,
- 13:44Speaker 4: the reason because when you're looking at West Virginia and
- 13:47Speaker 4: you're looking at our border counties, so you're looking at
- 13:50Speaker 4: the Wood counties, you're looking at the Eastern Panhandle, when
- 13:53Speaker 4: you're looking at the Northern Panhandle, they have a market
- 13:56Speaker 4: competitive advantage because with the transfer and the Lucy Goosey rules,
- 14:00Speaker 4: now they can get those kids from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland.
- 14:03Speaker 6: DC, Virginia.
- 14:04Speaker 4: So they can get those kids potentially, potentially they can
- 14:09Speaker 4: yet they could get those kids in and again maybe
- 14:12Speaker 4: even more well to do families, particularly in the Eastern Panhandle,
- 14:16Speaker 4: can living like that and work in DC and Maryland
- 14:18Speaker 4: in Virginia. Again, I don't have a problem with the
- 14:21Speaker 4: forur A model. The problem was is that they made this.
- 14:25Speaker 4: They made the formula so convoluted, it's so complex that
- 14:30Speaker 4: it didn't make sense, and they left themselves exposed to
- 14:32Speaker 4: be attacked. What they should have did is just based
- 14:35Speaker 4: off pure Roman numbers. Like I said, if you got
- 14:38Speaker 4: four a system far as excuse me, four four systems,
- 14:42Speaker 4: you can have twenty eight teams a piece in the conference.
- 14:45Speaker 4: So you have twenty eight quads down and one one
- 14:48Speaker 4: would have twenty nine. And I'm saying you take you
- 14:50Speaker 4: take the schools, line them up strictly based on the
- 14:52Speaker 4: Roman numbers, and start cutting them off. Okay, the top
- 14:55Speaker 4: Roman here, that's that's Quada. Then then you go down
- 14:59Speaker 4: the list. So they made this formula in which they
- 15:02Speaker 4: arrived at the systems too complex and it left it
- 15:06Speaker 4: open to be attacked. So it wasn't it was maybe
- 15:09Speaker 4: maybe they thought too much. And then when and then
- 15:12Speaker 4: far as the implementation coming down, once you got those
- 15:15Speaker 4: eleven schools, those eleven schools that were that chose to
- 15:18Speaker 4: found the injunction to go back down the class, then
- 15:20Speaker 4: they didn't think that through, which we'll talk about that.
- 15:24Speaker 4: And that brings us to the problem that we're out
- 15:25Speaker 4: now right.
- 15:27Speaker 7: I'm just curious, I mean with I mean, the injunctions
- 15:30Speaker 7: have been flying since August, I mean basically basically Lawyer's dreams. Right. So,
- 15:37Speaker 7: so my curiosity is do other states with high school
- 15:40Speaker 7: football have these type of issues?
- 15:43Speaker 5: I mean, is this a is this a.
- 15:44Speaker 7: Common thing that happens like in Ohio and Kentucky and
- 15:48Speaker 7: Georgia anywhere that they have high school football play, do
- 15:51Speaker 7: they Is it because we've made our system so complex
- 15:54Speaker 7: and so just ridiculous. Really, I mean, a layman cannot
- 15:59Speaker 7: understand this. I can barely understand it. There are points
- 16:02Speaker 7: of it I still don't understand. So have we made
- 16:04Speaker 7: it so complex that the teams don't really understand what's
- 16:08Speaker 7: going on? And when they see things changing right before
- 16:11Speaker 7: the playoffs and they think they're going to the playoffs
- 16:13Speaker 7: and then all of a sudden, no, you're not. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 7: the point system is deemed this the way we're gonna go.
- 16:18Speaker 7: This unjunction says this. I'm just curious. Do other states
- 16:21Speaker 7: have these same problems that we're facing in West Virginia?
- 16:25Speaker 7: They have the same systems, right, quad, A, triple A, Like,
- 16:29Speaker 7: like you said, that's what we're trying to do, get
- 16:31Speaker 7: to their level.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Do they experience this?
- 16:34Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna take I'm gonna take a I'm
- 16:37Speaker 4: gonna take a huge guess at this. Okay, if they do,
- 16:42Speaker 4: and I'm like you, Hollis, I'm.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Going to assume the list. But they don't have it now. Yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 6: that's a good point. They're not having it, right, Yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 6: that's a good point. Yeah, they're not having that.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Maybe before the season started, Yes, like we did.
- 16:58Speaker 4: They're going to finish the season, start that up right
- 17:01Speaker 4: as soon as the end of the season, and all
- 17:04Speaker 4: that kind.
- 17:04Speaker 7: Of judge kind of thing is that does a judge
- 17:07Speaker 7: and you should know this right because you're you're a lawyer,
- 17:12Speaker 7: and so judge. Do judges have the right to say,
- 17:16Speaker 7: we're gonna put this off. We're going to put this
- 17:18Speaker 7: on hold after the playoffs? So why so are they?
- 17:20Speaker 7: Are they worried about their their status and their counting.
- 17:23Speaker 7: Maybe is that why they're listening to these injunctions and
- 17:25Speaker 7: following three right before the playoffs. I mean, this is
- 17:28Speaker 7: a totally different conversation that I'm curious, but but I think.
- 17:31Speaker 4: What happens is that generally, if a if A, if
- 17:34Speaker 4: the case is brought before the court, they're not necessarily
- 17:37Speaker 4: like doing it that day, particularly I'm going to the
- 17:39Speaker 4: Circuit quarter right Supreme Court.
- 17:41Speaker 6: Generally, like on.
- 17:42Speaker 4: The doctor, urgence we have but but it's happening now.
- 17:45Speaker 4: So generally because on the Doctor we have time to
- 17:47Speaker 4: research and do all these things. So I would imagine
- 17:49Speaker 4: just the week it's going to allow the court to
- 17:51Speaker 4: do due diligence as far as research and make sure
- 17:53Speaker 4: they arrive at the right decision. I think what Lisa
- 17:56Speaker 4: is asking is if I'm if I'm not mistaken, is
- 17:59Speaker 4: is why did this have to happen now?
- 18:02Speaker 6: We have waited until after the playoffs.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Because the thing is, if we waited, those teams wouldn't
- 18:08Speaker 4: have been able to make the better they're arguing whether
- 18:11Speaker 4: they want to make the playoffs because you got winning
- 18:12Speaker 4: teams who have winning records from what did they that's
- 18:17Speaker 4: that's out the playoffs now with the Wood County injunction
- 18:20Speaker 4: and let'sten and before we go there, let's talk about this.
- 18:22Speaker 4: When you had the eleven teams, so you had the
- 18:25Speaker 4: eleven teams that were in double A excuse me, QUAHDA
- 18:28Speaker 4: and Triple A mostly that that wanted to get bumped
- 18:31Speaker 4: down in the beginning to August. What should have happened
- 18:34Speaker 4: then is that you need a conference realignment at that point,
- 18:38Speaker 4: because that's why we're here, because again, you have teams
- 18:42Speaker 4: like a Saint Albans who are Triple A capital is
- 18:45Speaker 4: Triple A, that are basically a four A conference and
- 18:48Speaker 4: you have to play so many conference games you gotta
- 18:51Speaker 4: play your conference. So basically they're playing a four A
- 18:53Speaker 4: schedule getting there, getting beat bad again, not creative competitive violence,
- 18:59Speaker 4: getting beat. And then now when it comes to the
- 19:02Speaker 4: points system, which we can go over if you want to,
- 19:04Speaker 4: they rack up the points because they played these schedule
- 19:07Speaker 4: versus a team who maybe have a winning record that
- 19:09Speaker 4: played a lower schedule, And and so it's like the
- 19:12Speaker 4: whole again, implementation of this was not thoroughly thought out well.
- 19:16Speaker 5: The points systems flawed. I'm just gonna put.
- 19:19Speaker 6: It out there for.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Sure.
- 19:23Speaker 6: But all of this is all too all. This was
- 19:26Speaker 6: all too late.
- 19:28Speaker 4: You didn't have There's just just there just wasn't There
- 19:30Speaker 4: just wasn't enough time to make these changes, no matter
- 19:34Speaker 4: who wanted to make them, why they wanted to make them,
- 19:38Speaker 4: it just wasn't enough time to make this massive change
- 19:44Speaker 4: of And and again to your point about realignment, I'm
- 19:49Speaker 4: gonna say that, in a sense, the four A in
- 19:54Speaker 4: their mind was their realignment injunctions happen, yes, because you
- 20:01Speaker 4: can't get you can't have a Saint Aubans in Capital
- 20:06Speaker 4: basically in a conference surrounded by four a's because they
- 20:09Speaker 4: have to play those teams. Absolutely so again, and your
- 20:12Speaker 4: schedules already said, your schedules already set and the majority
- 20:16Speaker 4: of those teams are are now four A teams. So
- 20:19Speaker 4: whether you go down back down the triple A, your
- 20:22Speaker 4: your your massive schedule is four A. So what should
- 20:25Speaker 4: have happened is that once you had those eleven teams flip,
- 20:29Speaker 4: then it should have probably been even a WVSSA could
- 20:32Speaker 4: have maybe had an adjunction and say, hey, look all right,
- 20:34Speaker 4: we messed it up, we screwed it up. Let's go
- 20:36Speaker 4: go back to the old formula that we're gonna go
- 20:38Speaker 4: back to the triple A. Excuse me, triple A down
- 20:40Speaker 4: a single A, and then we're gonna try again this
- 20:42Speaker 4: next year because that threw everything off, and that's why
- 20:45Speaker 4: we're here.
- 20:46Speaker 7: And how long did the teams have I mean when
- 20:50Speaker 7: they started talking reclassification. Was it just something that happened,
- 20:53Speaker 7: like within the course of twelve months or was it
- 20:56Speaker 7: something that we've been talking about for a few years.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Because what you're saying is, you know, their schedules needed
- 21:02Speaker 7: to change.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Schedules needed to change, they needed time to do that.
- 21:06Speaker 6: You can't change the skin.
- 21:07Speaker 4: And they did not have time when when that hit, right, okay,
- 21:11Speaker 4: there was no time to change.
- 21:13Speaker 6: The schedules were already.
- 21:14Speaker 5: There was no warning, is what I was saying.
- 21:17Speaker 4: But the injunctions, I guess you could say that's the warning.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Yeah, that may be the.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Only that might be the only thing. But your schedules
- 21:26Speaker 4: already set. Right, And so where imagine changed. Imagine a
- 21:32Speaker 4: single A team that had picked up maybe like a
- 21:35Speaker 4: triple A team to play right as a as a
- 21:38Speaker 4: out of conference game, they could find themselves playing a
- 21:42Speaker 4: ton of teams that went up, that that was moved up.
- 21:49Speaker 6: You're playing out of your out of your rank. And
- 21:52Speaker 6: here's my point. Points yeah, and here's my point.
- 21:56Speaker 4: When you had those eleven teams flip and now when
- 21:59Speaker 4: you when you realize I only have sixteen quad eight schools,
- 22:05Speaker 4: at that point, you should have said to yourself, for
- 22:07Speaker 4: somebody in the organization that says, a hold up, let's okay,
- 22:10Speaker 4: we're gonna scrap all that right, we're gonna go back
- 22:12Speaker 4: to the OI film and we're gonna put everything back
- 22:15Speaker 4: because now you have a two and eight Hedgesville team
- 22:19Speaker 4: that's making the playoffs. And and again not to hate,
- 22:22Speaker 4: but be doing nothing but regroup. It makes it as
- 22:27Speaker 4: everybody makes yeah, or you know, everybody make it, or
- 22:30Speaker 4: maybe you got some wins disqualified as summer something to
- 22:33Speaker 4: that effect. But if you're two and eight, legitimately you
- 22:35Speaker 4: don't need to be there. You're gonna get players hurt,
- 22:38Speaker 4: and it's just you don't need to. You need to
- 22:40Speaker 4: because again we've suffered those two in eight, one and
- 22:43Speaker 4: nine seasons, right, and you know by the end of
- 22:45Speaker 4: that man mentally, physically you've done. You can't if if
- 22:51Speaker 4: you haven't played sports, and if you specifically had not
- 22:55Speaker 4: played football, and know what going through a losing season
- 22:58Speaker 4: is like, getting beat up and beat up weekend and
- 23:01Speaker 4: week I trust me, I know that I got that
- 23:03Speaker 4: for four years at Marshall, and I can tell you
- 23:06Speaker 4: it is not pleasant. By that game ten, by that
- 23:09Speaker 4: game eleven, bro, you're done and you you're trying to rethink,
- 23:13Speaker 4: you trying to rethink football as a whole, you're rethinking yourself.
- 23:16Speaker 6: You're football.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Like choice. And when you're two and eight and you're
- 23:21Speaker 4: making That's what I'm saying. So when you're down to
- 23:23Speaker 4: sixteen teams at that point, that didn't prompt you to say,
- 23:26Speaker 4: look all right, look we tried it, we messed up.
- 23:29Speaker 6: We're gonna do this again.
- 23:30Speaker 4: We're gonna So I'm saying again, and we're gonna talk
- 23:33Speaker 4: about where we're at now. But I'm saying from the
- 23:35Speaker 4: very beginning warning come before destruction. So you was warrant then,
- 23:40Speaker 4: and it wasn't working then, so it should have been eliminated.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Then it's gone back right up.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Yes, I agree, Well, let me.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Let me do this. Let me let me I didn't
- 23:50Speaker 6: do it in the opening, let me do it now.

- 24:21Speaker 4: Crawley for any updates.
- 24:24Speaker 6: All right, so.
- 24:26Speaker 4: You're gonna go over the point system right quick? Yes, okay, okay, yes,
- 24:30Speaker 4: we canna do that all right. So again, so I'm
- 24:32Speaker 4: looking at it right now. This is directly from the
- 24:35Speaker 4: wv SSAC website. So again, you have the four class system.
- 24:40Speaker 4: So we'll just take four A for example, before a
- 24:43Speaker 4: if you get a win against a four eighteen, that's
- 24:46Speaker 4: fifteen points. If you play a four eighteen, that's seven
- 24:49Speaker 4: point five points. For each game one by a defeated opponent,
- 24:54Speaker 4: that's one point. So if you beat Cabo Midland and
- 24:57Speaker 4: the Cabal Midland picks up a win, you get a
- 24:59Speaker 4: point for their win.
- 25:00Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:01Speaker 4: So for each game tie by a defeated opponent, that's
- 25:05Speaker 4: a half a point. So if Cavium Miller ties somebody,
- 25:08Speaker 4: you get a half a point. So for each game
- 25:10Speaker 4: one by tie the opponent, that's half a point. So
- 25:13Speaker 4: if you tie the ponent and then they win a game,
- 25:15Speaker 4: you get a half a point. Look at y'all for
- 25:18Speaker 4: each game tied by look look at this one. For
- 25:21Speaker 4: each game tied by a tied opponent, you get a
- 25:26Speaker 4: quarter point.
- 25:27Speaker 6: So if I tie Cabin Million.
- 25:30Speaker 4: So if I tie Cable Milon and then Cavil Miller
- 25:32Speaker 4: goes out and ties Spring Valley, then I get a
- 25:35Speaker 4: quarter point.
- 25:36Speaker 6: All right.
- 25:36Speaker 4: For each game one by a winning opponent in a
- 25:38Speaker 4: class or in his class or above, you get up
- 25:41Speaker 4: one point five. So if I'm a triple A team,
- 25:43Speaker 4: I play a quad a team that quad. A team
- 25:45Speaker 4: wins a game, I get a point and a half.
- 25:48Speaker 4: So for each game tie by winning opponent in a
- 25:51Speaker 4: class or above, you get seven point five. So if
- 25:53Speaker 4: you if you play it up in that team, you
- 25:55Speaker 4: beat that team and they tied an opponent, you get
- 25:58Speaker 4: a three quarters of a.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Point officially hurts right now.
- 26:02Speaker 6: So that's the system.
- 26:03Speaker 4: So anybody listeners, if you if you understand that, my
- 26:10Speaker 4: head is off to you, we're gonna post.
- 26:12Speaker 6: It on your your pace. We we need we need you.
- 26:16Speaker 6: If you got that.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Okay, if you heard that and you understand that right
- 26:20Speaker 4: off the top, please hit me up on my on
- 26:23Speaker 4: on on Facebook with let's off with currently because I
- 26:26Speaker 4: need you to be around me because I'm just telling
- 26:28Speaker 4: you my brain, Yeah, I need you in my life
- 26:31Speaker 4: because my brain cannot calculate that.
- 26:34Speaker 7: Here's the thing, though, hollis this is this has been
- 26:37Speaker 7: in place for years.
- 26:39Speaker 5: This is not new, Like I guess it's new to me.
- 26:41Speaker 5: I didn't realize.
- 26:42Speaker 4: It's totally new to me, okay, because I was I
- 26:46Speaker 4: was somewhere else in this.
- 26:47Speaker 6: My question is is who's one? Why is that the process?
- 26:53Speaker 4: Like like if you came in and you let's just
- 26:56Speaker 4: say you were you took over the department.
- 26:59Speaker 6: Okay, W S S A C.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Okay, you take you took it over, and that's your
- 27:03Speaker 4: that's how you measure the process.
- 27:07Speaker 6: When would you change that? I would not change it.
- 27:09Speaker 4: I'll tell you why because again, outside of it being
- 27:15Speaker 4: a little like it's a little convolute and everything.
- 27:18Speaker 6: But what in essence, here's what it does.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Simply, it rewards you for playing the best competition possible.
- 27:25Speaker 4: So it rewards you for playing up and it rewards
- 27:28Speaker 4: you for playing the best competition. We look at Fairmount
- 27:33Speaker 4: East Rights the last couple of years they were a
- 27:36Speaker 4: double A school, right, they essentially what they did they
- 27:40Speaker 4: played a triple A schedule. Now going into the playoffs.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Going at the end of the season, they like six
- 27:46Speaker 4: and four, five and five ish, But because they had
- 27:49Speaker 4: racked up so much point, because they played up and
- 27:52Speaker 4: got some wins, they're seeding in the Double A playoffs
- 27:55Speaker 4: was hot and they end up winning the championship that year. So,
- 27:58Speaker 4: in essence, what this point system allows you to do
- 28:01Speaker 4: if you play the best teams possible and if you
- 28:03Speaker 4: play up. So the motivation what you're saying, the motivation,
- 28:07Speaker 4: what you what you're reading into that is the motivation
- 28:10Speaker 4: of playing up, playing playing up and playing the best,
- 28:14Speaker 4: playing the best competition. So Martin's, for example, a Hurricane
- 28:17Speaker 4: playing Martins burd this year, that that that's not a
- 28:20Speaker 4: game that you have to play. Probably that's the game
- 28:22Speaker 4: maybe you don't want to play in the regular season.
- 28:24Speaker 4: But because they played that game, they get they get
- 28:26Speaker 4: more points of playing that game, they'll get a point
- 28:29Speaker 4: of two up, so it rewards you for that. So
- 28:32Speaker 4: that's why I think it's a good system.
- 28:33Speaker 7: But it's also the reason we're in the mess that
- 28:35Speaker 7: we're in right now, and we've got losing records, going
- 28:38Speaker 7: to possibly.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Going to the playoffs because of the point system.
- 28:42Speaker 4: No, the point system is is just the point system.
- 28:45Speaker 4: The reason we're in the message because the realignment the
- 28:49Speaker 4: Class A and the eleven schools dropping down.
- 28:52Speaker 7: But honestly, don't you think that the team's in quad,
- 28:55Speaker 7: A triple, A double a single, they should be playing
- 28:58Speaker 7: each other possible, and then that should be what's going on,
- 29:02Speaker 7: not not just trying to brack up points and playing
- 29:06Speaker 7: above your class.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Yeah, because the person who's gonna be strategued, that's gonna
- 29:10Speaker 4: be strategic about that and it's gonna do that solely
- 29:15Speaker 4: for the opportunity to get into the playoffs. But here's it,
- 29:17Speaker 4: but that's not it. What happened, though, is that if
- 29:20Speaker 4: we had a if this isn't what wasn't here, and
- 29:23Speaker 4: we're saying we're just basing it off record, what's going
- 29:25Speaker 4: to happen is that you're gonna have a Quada team
- 29:27Speaker 4: that's gonna play the conference games that they're mandated to play,
- 29:30Speaker 4: and then they would just play down just to say, okay,
- 29:33Speaker 4: then I'm seven to three. You can you can you
- 29:37Speaker 4: can easily fix that and we'll talk about well, we'll
- 29:40Speaker 4: talk about that as soon as we come out of
- 29:41Speaker 4: the break.
- 29:41Speaker 6: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we got to take a
- 29:43Speaker 6: quick break. We'll be right back.

- 30:43Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
- 30:45Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back and uh and
- 30:50Speaker 4: Hollis has has kind of dropped the bomb a little
- 30:55Speaker 4: bit on this. Why this is a good system, I
- 30:59Speaker 4: understand to tell you, it makes sense some of it.
- 31:02Speaker 4: It does what it totally makes sense. Like I said,
- 31:05Speaker 4: the rewards you for playing the best competition possible.
- 31:07Speaker 7: I'm going to go with you, Hollis on the part
- 31:09Speaker 7: about getting points if you you know, for winning against
- 31:13Speaker 7: for a team. Okay, you get so many points for
- 31:16Speaker 7: tying against the four A team in your Triple A
- 31:19Speaker 7: or whatever.
- 31:20Speaker 5: But then we're.
- 31:21Speaker 7: Getting into for each game tied by a tied opponent,
- 31:25Speaker 7: for each game won by a winning opponent in its class,
- 31:28Speaker 7: or above for each game tied by winning opponent in
- 31:31Speaker 7: it's class. I mean, some of this stuff is very
- 31:35Speaker 7: complex for high school football.
- 31:37Speaker 5: I mean I can see a.
- 31:38Speaker 7: Point system to a degree, but not what they've got
- 31:41Speaker 7: in place here.
- 31:42Speaker 6: Is there not a system because they're not a system
- 31:46Speaker 6: or somewhere else. I understand that.
- 31:54Speaker 4: I understand that, and I don't know as a fact
- 31:57Speaker 4: that what I'm getting ready to say is factual, but
- 32:01Speaker 4: I'm gonna make it sound like it's factual.
- 32:03Speaker 6: Okay, I'm gonna put it out there like it's factual.
- 32:06Speaker 4: I'm gonna make the case here that the structure in
- 32:11Speaker 4: how you how you get to playoffs, how you do
- 32:15Speaker 4: those types of things, there is a system set up somewhere,
- 32:21Speaker 4: whether it's collegiate, whether it's professional, that you can you
- 32:26Speaker 4: can follow that does not require TIDEID.
- 32:32Speaker 6: And there's no reason.
- 32:32Speaker 4: But there's no reason for that complication unless you want
- 32:36Speaker 4: people to be confused.
- 32:37Speaker 6: But here's the thing.
- 32:38Speaker 4: You're only talking about an eight point scale. So we're
- 32:40Speaker 4: only taking eight factors into this. And and again, not
- 32:43Speaker 4: only does it reward your your team for playing the
- 32:46Speaker 4: best competition, but it also has a cyclical effect where
- 32:50Speaker 4: it's saying that not only should I be playing, but
- 32:52Speaker 4: you should be playing too. So basically it's saying that
- 32:56Speaker 4: we all got to play the best competition that we
- 32:59Speaker 4: all can play. So I can't play the best competition
- 33:03Speaker 4: and then you play sorry competition. I won't say, I
- 33:06Speaker 4: will say lower, I won't say. So it's so it
- 33:10Speaker 4: creates a situation in which everybody got to play. Every
- 33:13Speaker 4: got to play the best out there.
- 33:14Speaker 7: Okay, And and that makes sense at the college level
- 33:16Speaker 7: because there's so many college programs to choose from. In
- 33:21Speaker 7: high school, there's there it's a very limited amount of teams,
- 33:25Speaker 7: and so it's up to Martinsburg who they want to play. Basically,
- 33:28Speaker 7: I mean that they're they're the they're the cream of
- 33:30Speaker 7: the cross and so you know, you've got your double A,
- 33:33Speaker 7: triple A. Even as a team that wants to play them,
- 33:35Speaker 7: they may not possibly be able to play them just
- 33:37Speaker 7: because everybody wants to play them.
- 33:39Speaker 5: You see what I'm trying.
- 33:40Speaker 6: That's why, and that's why Martin Berger and the Hurricane.
- 33:42Speaker 4: They have those out of town games, and there's a
- 33:44Speaker 4: form there's a whole different formula for that. So that's
- 33:46Speaker 4: why so they play they played that good time, because
- 33:50Speaker 4: again Martin Burger play the Virginia champs and DC and
- 33:53Speaker 4: Maryland champs and all that. So that's why they play
- 33:55Speaker 4: those games as well. See but but see, there's no but.
- 33:57Speaker 4: But there's to me what I think how I see it.
- 34:03Speaker 4: So this conference, this conference, this conference, that conference. Right,
- 34:08Speaker 4: so you you play your your conference teams, say there's
- 34:13Speaker 4: eight of them, Okay, Then now your next two teams,
- 34:18Speaker 4: you could play whoever you want, whoever you can, whoever
- 34:21Speaker 4: you can, right, you know, yeah, whoever you can, whoever
- 34:26Speaker 4: wants to play you.
- 34:27Speaker 6: Okay.
- 34:28Speaker 4: Now for those two games, you can choose to play up.
- 34:33Speaker 4: You can choose to play damn well not because what matters.
- 34:39Speaker 4: First thing that matters is is your conference. But here's
- 34:42Speaker 4: the problem with that, the problem with that. If you
- 34:45Speaker 4: did it that way, then essentially I could go four
- 34:48Speaker 4: and for of my conference, I could play two lower
- 34:50Speaker 4: level teams, and I can go six. Now six, and
- 34:53Speaker 4: now I'm six and four. Now it appears I had
- 34:54Speaker 4: a good reason. What's gonna matter. What's gonna matter is
- 34:57Speaker 4: gonna be. The first thing that matters is your conference record. Okay,
- 35:00Speaker 4: the conference record matter. But let's say everybody was kind
- 35:02Speaker 4: of middle of the road, or this conference maybe wasn't
- 35:05Speaker 4: this good. So now I'm getting in and I played
- 35:07Speaker 4: two lower teams, or or if everything is up and
- 35:11Speaker 4: maybe I'm seven and three or six and four. Now
- 35:13Speaker 4: I don't even make the playoffs with a winning record
- 35:16Speaker 4: because I wouldn't play those those those lower.
- 35:18Speaker 5: Two teams that way.
- 35:19Speaker 4: So what I'm saying is that I think this system
- 35:23Speaker 4: Foster is an environment where everybody got to play the best.
- 35:25Speaker 6: Okay. So so I like this.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Okay, so you look at you, okay, and everybody I'm
- 35:30Speaker 4: gonna use I'm gonna use marshall.
- 35:32Speaker 6: I'm gonna use marshall. Okay.
- 35:34Speaker 4: People are upset because some people are upset because they
- 35:37Speaker 4: they're bowl eligible.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Okay, how did they get Bowl eligible? Right?
- 35:41Speaker 8: That?
- 35:41Speaker 6: You know what? What is their record?
- 35:43Speaker 4: Their record is not like something in one right or
- 35:46Speaker 4: something in no right, but they made the playoffs because
- 35:50Speaker 4: the structure is yeah, the boat, yes, so the bowl
- 35:54Speaker 4: is what it is. So you get Bowl eligible for
- 35:56Speaker 4: this reason, I think it's very simple to make what
- 36:01Speaker 4: that what the requirement is at the high school level
- 36:05Speaker 4: to make the playoffs, you either have to you have
- 36:09Speaker 4: to do this, this and that.
- 36:11Speaker 6: But that thing that you read.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Out it's simple. I think I think you too much
- 36:17Speaker 4: into it.
- 36:18Speaker 6: No, I just don't.
- 36:19Speaker 4: I'm just beause, No, I don't get it simple. It
- 36:23Speaker 4: is an eight point system.
- 36:27Speaker 6: It's basically a point factors that.
- 36:28Speaker 7: Don't maybe had a double A single A, but now
- 36:31Speaker 7: that we got quad A, it just throws it all.
- 36:34Speaker 4: I would succeed. I will succeed that point. I would
- 36:37Speaker 4: acknowledge that that because of the current sy that doesn't
- 36:41Speaker 4: necessarily because again you only have sixteen teams in the
- 36:45Speaker 4: in the quality again, you know you could probably just
- 36:48Speaker 4: do that by record, right, you don't need this and that.
- 36:49Speaker 4: But I think that makes sense. But at the end
- 36:52Speaker 4: of the day, like I said, I think the overall point, now,
- 36:55Speaker 4: maybe it can be simplified, maybe.
- 36:57Speaker 6: That there's no question that could be simple.
- 36:59Speaker 4: But but I think overall I like it because again
- 37:02Speaker 4: Fairmount East was a couple of years ago they played
- 37:05Speaker 4: a whole trip a schedule has a basically a double
- 37:07Speaker 4: A school outside of the games of mandated and it
- 37:10Speaker 4: made them a better team. How many guys, do you
- 37:12Speaker 4: know how many games are mandated to play in conference?
- 37:15Speaker 4: It depends on size, and not everybody's conference sizes different,
- 37:18Speaker 4: so that's different. So I know they I want to
- 37:21Speaker 4: say they played a Huntington, CAVU, Millan and Spring Valley.
- 37:24Speaker 6: I mean they played a Murders Road. And the good
- 37:28Speaker 6: thing about that.
- 37:29Speaker 4: What I see that as a benefit is I want
- 37:32Speaker 4: my team to be tested against some of the best teams.
- 37:35Speaker 4: So when I play in my conference, i'm playing I
- 37:39Speaker 4: know what playing Huntington is like. I know what playing
- 37:42Speaker 4: that team is like. So now I can I can
- 37:45Speaker 4: tell them we can play with this team. So now
- 37:48Speaker 4: we gave you the points system, I think we gave
- 37:51Speaker 4: you kind of the origin and our thoughts basically how
- 37:54Speaker 4: this whole problem started. So now we're at the playoffs
- 37:58Speaker 4: and just to set it up and we could talk.
- 38:00Speaker 4: You had basically two injunctions. You had an injunction in
- 38:03Speaker 4: Wood County. You had an injunction in Mason County. Basically
- 38:07Speaker 4: the Wood County junction is kind of That's why we
- 38:09Speaker 4: went over to the point system because basically challenged the
- 38:12Speaker 4: point system, and basically they came to the conclusion that
- 38:15Speaker 4: it was flawed and it didn't factor in what we
- 38:18Speaker 4: just talked about as far as you playing up down
- 38:20Speaker 4: whatever like that. So essentially what happens is that you
- 38:23Speaker 4: had a school like Saint Albans three and seven Capitol
- 38:26Speaker 4: three and seven because they played basically a four A schedule.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Then they got them points were already that they were
- 38:33Speaker 4: already in the conference, so it eliminated Point Pleasant in
- 38:37Speaker 4: Hampshire County. So basically those teams got dropped out of
- 38:40Speaker 4: the Triple A playoffs because of this. And you have
- 38:43Speaker 4: some other schools like West Side TULSAIBN Tulsa and I
- 38:46Speaker 4: think Wayne as well, and the I think they are
- 38:48Speaker 4: in Double A. And then you had another injunction after that,
- 38:52Speaker 4: so and that junction was successful, so that changed the
- 38:56Speaker 4: playoff structure. Then you had another injunction in Mason County,
- 39:00Speaker 4: and basically what that injunction stated was that there needed
- 39:03Speaker 4: to be a playing game. So essentially the two teams
- 39:06Speaker 4: teams that got dropped out of Triple A, which was
- 39:08Speaker 4: Point Pleasant in Hampshire County, they wanted a playing game.
- 39:11Speaker 4: So I think it would be Point Pleasant versus Capital
- 39:14Speaker 4: in Hampshire versus Saint Alban's, so those would be the
- 39:18Speaker 4: two playing games and then you would actually start the playoffs.
- 39:20Speaker 4: That injunction was successful. So now the wv SAAC came
- 39:25Speaker 4: back and they took it to the Supreme Court to
- 39:27Speaker 4: drop those two injection injunctions and take it back to
- 39:31Speaker 4: just the original playoffs.
- 39:33Speaker 6: That was a couple of weeks ago. So that's a mouthful.
- 39:36Speaker 4: So this is why it's at the Supreme Court now,
- 39:40Speaker 4: and this is why we have the postponement.
- 39:43Speaker 5: And we also had I think, did you something about
- 39:46Speaker 5: Wyoming County?
- 39:47Speaker 6: I didn't. I must have missed out. I didn't see
- 39:49Speaker 6: that one.
- 39:49Speaker 7: Yeah, I found Wyoming Counties also filed another lawsuit for Westside,
- 39:54Speaker 7: which was one of the schools that was bumped from
- 39:56Speaker 7: the from the injunction granted in Wood County.
- 40:00Speaker 5: So they're upset.
- 40:00Speaker 7: They want relief from the injunctions, which I take that
- 40:04Speaker 7: as they just want to go relief.
- 40:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 40:06Speaker 6: I think that's what too.
- 40:08Speaker 7: Many maybe or just you know, go back to just
- 40:11Speaker 7: get rid of all the injunctions, is what it sounds
- 40:13Speaker 7: like to me. Uh And and so then there was Yeah,
- 40:17Speaker 7: so that was the only one that I think that
- 40:19Speaker 7: I heard, Oh in Tulsa, you said that one, though,
- 40:21Speaker 7: I think that was just recent like today.
- 40:23Speaker 5: So it's a mess.
- 40:25Speaker 6: And my question.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Is how do you how do you go through a season,
- 40:35Speaker 4: get to the week of playoffs and don't play. I
- 40:42Speaker 4: mean as far as the postponement, yes, well, I mean
- 40:45Speaker 4: it's a court process.
- 40:46Speaker 6: Now, I know this time, I know, I totally understand.
- 40:50Speaker 6: I get I get that.
- 40:52Speaker 4: My question, my thought, my comment to this is imagine,
- 40:59Speaker 4: imagine you, imagine you, imagine me.
- 41:02Speaker 6: You're the week of the playoffs and you're not playing.
- 41:06Speaker 4: You you you by Tuesday, you know you're not You're
- 41:11Speaker 4: not going to play a game on on on Friday night.
- 41:13Speaker 6: This is a great advantage. This is the ultimate.
- 41:18Speaker 3: If you go.
- 41:19Speaker 6: You got players that are hurting.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Now here's the get because it's gonna be two weeks,
- 41:25Speaker 4: So it has to be two weeks that you're going
- 41:27Speaker 4: to be sitting, right, So for this week, I can
- 41:30Speaker 4: get players held up, I can rest them. And again
- 41:33Speaker 4: that may be that's different from team the team, because
- 41:35Speaker 4: some teams you need them just to go, and the
- 41:37Speaker 4: other guys. The other part of that is you got
- 41:39Speaker 4: other sports and you got other sports, and that's that's
- 41:40Speaker 4: a problem too. But I think the playoffs is gonna
- 41:43Speaker 4: take precedent and you, I think, particularly depending on where
- 41:48Speaker 4: you're at, you probably have an idea of who you
- 41:51Speaker 4: might end up playing. So you probably got maybe one
- 41:53Speaker 4: of maybe a three teams, right, So it's going to
- 41:55Speaker 4: give you more time to develop scouting reports on these teams.
- 41:57Speaker 4: And it can get players held up if you are
- 42:00Speaker 4: injured team. So if you're like Noah, Villa, Tommy and
- 42:02Speaker 4: Hurricane who has a bum ancho right now and you out,
- 42:05Speaker 4: you can sit for two weeks. Boy, that that helps you.
- 42:08Speaker 4: So I think it could be an advantage too, and
- 42:11Speaker 4: so again to somebody's in advantage disadvantaged to somebody one.
- 42:19Speaker 6: You know.
- 42:20Speaker 4: So I look at this and I just I just can't.
- 42:24Speaker 4: There's no way I can like it. There's just no
- 42:26Speaker 4: there's just zero chances for me to find something that's
- 42:30Speaker 4: justifiable here that makes sense to me, like, oh this works.
- 42:34Speaker 4: So let me ask your opinion on this, and that's
- 42:36Speaker 4: both of you. What is the court do manber? We
- 42:38Speaker 4: got we got basically three lingering injunctions hanging around, and
- 42:42Speaker 4: we got obviously they in wvs says he wants to
- 42:46Speaker 4: take it back to the original format. So so what
- 42:49Speaker 4: what what happens? I think it's going to go back
- 42:51Speaker 4: to the original format because I don't because I just
- 42:56Speaker 4: don't see them being willing to even trying to test
- 43:00Speaker 4: something new. Now, let's just go back to what we
- 43:04Speaker 4: were doing and and.
- 43:05Speaker 5: And then deal with it.
- 43:07Speaker 6: Yes, that's that's what. That's what.
- 43:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Carl's right.
- 43:11Speaker 7: I mean, I think the playing game would be probably
- 43:15Speaker 7: a fair thing to do for those teams that feel
- 43:19Speaker 7: like they're being slighted. But I don't know if they'll
- 43:22Speaker 7: open that can of worms.
- 43:23Speaker 5: I don't.
- 43:24Speaker 7: I think what they'll do is just go back to
- 43:26Speaker 7: the original, the original plan, and then address it in
- 43:30Speaker 7: the off season.
- 43:31Speaker 4: See, I think you got to go with the Wood
- 43:33Speaker 4: County because the Wood County is exact and correct in
- 43:36Speaker 4: the formula far as the points laid.
- 43:38Speaker 5: Out, those rocked out.
- 43:41Speaker 6: So I think again, if you the court, if the court.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I'm looking at it, well, I don't necessarily want because
- 43:46Speaker 4: I think Mason County has the right idea. I think
- 43:48Speaker 4: that's exactly correct, and I think they ought to have
- 43:50Speaker 4: the playing games just because it is. But if I'm
- 43:54Speaker 4: from the If I'm looking at it from a judicial standpoint,
- 43:56Speaker 4: I'm saying, well, I don't want to risk that's kind
- 43:58Speaker 4: of unnecessary to have that plan games. So what does
- 44:01Speaker 4: the law say? What does the policy say? And the
- 44:03Speaker 4: policy say the point system that we just went over.
- 44:06Speaker 4: So if I'm the court, I'm looking at the policy,
- 44:08Speaker 4: I'm looking at the point system, and I'm saying, if
- 44:10Speaker 4: Wood County has exact and correct and this is the
- 44:13Speaker 4: formula that you have on based on the policies, based
- 44:17Speaker 4: on the systems, based on writing blah blah blah blah blah,
- 44:20Speaker 4: then you gotta I would probably dismiss Mason County's injunction
- 44:24Speaker 4: and Wood Counties will be acknowledged, and that's the ruling
- 44:28Speaker 4: I will go with.
- 44:29Speaker 6: So, unfortunately, those teams will be out.
- 44:31Speaker 7: How long do you think it will take before the
- 44:34Speaker 7: West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals comes out with a ruling.
- 44:37Speaker 6: I think it was going to be this week.
- 44:39Speaker 7: I would hope so, because these injunctions happen like within hours,
- 44:42Speaker 7: so I would hope that they could resolve this quickly
- 44:45Speaker 7: and at least get the play. Because here's the other
- 44:47Speaker 7: thing we're going to run into. With and this is
- 44:50Speaker 7: a domino effect whenever you delay the football playoffs and
- 44:53Speaker 7: they're going to be hosted here in Charleston this year,
- 44:57Speaker 7: the Super Six, and we're looking that everything being pushed
- 45:01Speaker 7: out a week. Well, you've got other events going on
- 45:04Speaker 7: in Charleston coming up in the in the next few weeks.
- 45:06Speaker 7: You've got, uh the cheerleader competition that's going to take
- 45:10Speaker 7: place at the Civic Center of the state cheerleading competition.
- 45:13Speaker 7: You also have volleyball, which is being affected by all
- 45:16Speaker 7: this at the Girls Volleyball Championships that's all going to
- 45:19Speaker 7: be taking place at this you know, around the same time.
- 45:22Speaker 7: If they keep pushing it out, you're gonna have issues
- 45:25Speaker 7: with accommodations in Charleston having that many people. Like we
- 45:28Speaker 7: talked before Hollis, they've got rooms blocked, you know, for
- 45:32Speaker 7: for for these teams coming.
- 45:33Speaker 5: In to do the Super Six.
- 45:35Speaker 7: If you've got events going on with the Civic Center,
- 45:37Speaker 7: like Ringling Brothers, you know, the Circus is coming to
- 45:40Speaker 7: town in the next few weeks. They've got I think
- 45:43Speaker 7: trans Iberian Orchestra. You're gonna have an issue with people
- 45:46Speaker 7: trying to find accommodations and you know, just exactly. So
- 45:52Speaker 7: you know, that's the domino effect of all this. So hopefully,
- 45:55Speaker 7: like you said, they get this settled quickly and they
- 45:57Speaker 7: can get these playoffs going next week, or it's going
- 45:59Speaker 7: to become even more complicated.
- 46:00Speaker 4: And the cv B, I'm sure they had activities and
- 46:03Speaker 4: everything planned out for this, the host, the host parties
- 46:06Speaker 4: and all that others. Absolutely, you have to assume that
- 46:09Speaker 4: everything that was planned, that everything was planned out for
- 46:12Speaker 4: this week for that game to show up, and all
- 46:17Speaker 4: of a.
- 46:17Speaker 6: Sudden, everything's changed, everything has changed.
- 46:20Speaker 4: I'm thinking that they like this has to be a
- 46:24Speaker 4: day or so conversation.
- 46:27Speaker 6: I don't know, man, I know it is a big
- 46:30Speaker 6: decision moving forward.
- 46:32Speaker 4: I just don't know how long you can wait, Like,
- 46:36Speaker 4: you can't put this into a week, You can't, you
- 46:38Speaker 4: can't rest.
- 46:39Speaker 6: No, you can't, No, you can't it.
- 46:43Speaker 4: But but but but but look at what look at
- 46:46Speaker 4: what's at stake for every every couple of days that go,
- 46:50Speaker 4: you could you can make the positive side of you
- 46:52Speaker 4: got rest, you got time to work on a game
- 46:55Speaker 4: plan against somebody else, blah blah blah blah. You got
- 46:58Speaker 4: all that, But there's a whole lot of other stuff happening.
- 47:02Speaker 4: You know, there's there's there's a kid who's on the team,
- 47:07Speaker 4: plays basketball and might be the start of basketball team
- 47:10Speaker 4: and miss practice, get ready to get for the games.
- 47:15Speaker 4: All of those kinds of things are all lingering out there. Okay,
- 47:19Speaker 4: So let me ask you this, and and I think
- 47:21Speaker 4: this is a conversation that a bigger conversation that's definitely
- 47:26Speaker 4: a part of what's going on, because this has been
- 47:28Speaker 4: a terrible high school football season for me, Like it
- 47:30Speaker 4: just hasn't been fun. I really haven't been excited about it,
- 47:33Speaker 4: just because of particularly paying attention to the four A
- 47:35Speaker 4: class because it's just been you know, everybody's making the playoffs.
- 47:38Speaker 4: So there's no suspense, right his football in West Virginia
- 47:43Speaker 4: become totally toxic. And I'm talking about not I'm talking
- 47:47Speaker 4: about from what you've talked about in the numera amount
- 47:50Speaker 4: of times far as the little league situations that's going
- 47:53Speaker 4: on around the state. We've had discussions about the middle
- 47:56Speaker 4: school debacles that's happening here at least locally.
- 47:59Speaker 6: Obviously this w Old high school thing.
- 48:01Speaker 4: And even with w U and and and and and
- 48:05Speaker 4: Marshall not being able to be as competitive as that
- 48:08Speaker 4: we liked just because they're playing in these distant conferences.
- 48:12Speaker 6: So so it's football. Just is it on a downhill?
- 48:15Speaker 3: Is it? Just?
- 48:16Speaker 6: Where are we at with it? I like your word
- 48:18Speaker 6: toxic more so than downhill.
- 48:21Speaker 4: But the hugest problem that I see from my perspective.
- 48:30Speaker 6: And and please take this personally, if it's you, okay,
- 48:33Speaker 6: please take it.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Take it personally, okay, Please please.
- 48:38Speaker 6: We've just lost.
- 48:39Speaker 4: Our minds about around football, whether we whether we coach,
- 48:45Speaker 4: whether we're fans wherever, wherever you sit that's not on
- 48:50Speaker 4: the field, don't have the whistle, don't have that hat.
- 48:55Speaker 6: And you're talking about fans to administrated, all.
- 48:57Speaker 4: That, all of them, we've just lost. We just lost
- 49:01Speaker 4: our mind because we love it so much. There's a
- 49:04Speaker 4: there's a there's we love football so much that we
- 49:07Speaker 4: don't care about.
- 49:08Speaker 6: The kids that we don't we don't care about the
- 49:10Speaker 6: young kids. We want to win.
- 49:14Speaker 4: We and and when I say that, I want my
- 49:17Speaker 4: little group of kids to win.
- 49:19Speaker 6: I want South Charleston Youth Football to win.
- 49:21Speaker 4: But I'm not gonna treat them or nor am I
- 49:24Speaker 4: going to go crazy when they lose, Like I want
- 49:29Speaker 4: them to have the best experience possible or makeup stuff
- 49:32Speaker 4: to just just just make up a whole bunch of
- 49:34Speaker 4: stuff and it just ends up cloud and the whole situation.
- 49:37Speaker 6: This is what I know. Mayor Frank Mullens.
- 49:42Speaker 4: He supports youth sports funds you sports through the South
- 49:45Speaker 4: Charleston Rec Center for the sole purpose for kids to
- 49:50Speaker 4: have activities, have development, and to have something to do. Yeah,
- 49:58Speaker 4: so when they're playing football, when they're playing basketball, when
- 50:01Speaker 4: they're doing those kinds of things, they're off the street.
- 50:03Speaker 5: Exactly having fun.
- 50:06Speaker 4: I don't want anybody to get in the way of that.
- 50:09Speaker 4: I don't want that to turn toxic. Whether it's the
- 50:14Speaker 4: coach who's toxic because he wants to win, whether it's
- 50:17Speaker 4: the parent who's toxic because she wants her son to play,
- 50:20Speaker 4: any of that.
- 50:22Speaker 6: I think West.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Virginia we we've overstepped our bounds in where we think
- 50:28Speaker 4: we can be, what we think we can do, what
- 50:31Speaker 4: we can control in the sports spear.
- 50:35Speaker 7: We've we've forgotten how to celebrate the small one.
- 50:39Speaker 6: The participation that well just here, like what.
- 50:42Speaker 7: We were talking about earlier with with with coach hough
- 50:45Speaker 7: and this past weekend whenever Marshall won their game, their
- 50:48Speaker 7: away game and became Bowl eligible, and he was celebrating.
- 50:51Speaker 7: He was happy, and and you know, you were talking
- 50:55Speaker 7: about the video that you saw, and I think I
- 50:57Speaker 7: saw parts of it too, but he was just he
- 50:59Speaker 7: was he was genuinely happy for his team that they're
- 51:02Speaker 7: going to a bowl. And you've got fans scoffing at it, like, well,
- 51:06Speaker 7: everybody goes to a bowl, now, you know, I mean,
- 51:08Speaker 7: it's not you don't celebrate the small victories. We're not
- 51:11Speaker 7: all going to be in that national championship. We're not
- 51:14Speaker 7: we're not that state yet.
- 51:16Speaker 4: Well and and and if it ever are, and and
- 51:18Speaker 4: and and not even let's don't even make it about
- 51:21Speaker 4: our state.
- 51:22Speaker 6: Let's just make it about eighteen.
- 51:24Speaker 4: If you look at Marshall, forget where they come from,
- 51:27Speaker 4: look forget who the coach is.
- 51:29Speaker 6: Did you see the players, did you hear.
- 51:32Speaker 4: The players' voices, how happy they were, how excited they were?
- 51:37Speaker 4: Same on you if you're a Marshall fan and you
- 51:40Speaker 4: ain't excited. If you if you if you get that
- 51:43Speaker 4: rare peak inside of a locker room that very few
- 51:46Speaker 4: people get to at the college level to celebrate a win, right,
- 51:51Speaker 4: whether it's the only win you had, or if it's
- 51:55Speaker 4: a win that makes you bowl eligible. And let's just
- 51:57Speaker 4: make the case. Everybody goes to a bowl and but
- 51:59Speaker 4: you you just became bold eligible. How are you supposed
- 52:03Speaker 4: to that?
- 52:03Speaker 6: Good game? Guys? All right, we're bowl eligible and let's
- 52:07Speaker 6: just get ready to go to work next week. Come on, yeah, like,
- 52:10Speaker 6: come on, what do you want?
- 52:12Speaker 4: And do you think in far as even like what
- 52:16Speaker 4: happened is creating this like for a system where we
- 52:19Speaker 4: wanted more champions we wanted do you think that sort
- 52:23Speaker 4: of thought process spawned from parents and different things of
- 52:28Speaker 4: that that you're saying, Hey, we can't compete with martin Burg,
- 52:30Speaker 4: we need another class so we can have more championship.
- 52:32Speaker 4: Do you think that like that sentiment is pervasive even
- 52:35Speaker 4: in administrative decisions. I think I think that I think
- 52:40Speaker 4: that there is some of that happening, you know, But.
- 52:47Speaker 6: What I try to.
- 52:51Speaker 4: It's it's simple, hollis just play right, just play if
- 52:56Speaker 4: talking about that, I'm saying, do you think that because
- 53:00Speaker 4: of the nature of how we're moving as parents and
- 53:03Speaker 4: and overstepping our bounds as far as wanting to coach
- 53:06Speaker 4: our kids in totality, that that that that's kind of
- 53:10Speaker 4: leaked into decision makers' minds to say, Okay, now we
- 53:13Speaker 4: have to do this because we have to appease everybody,
- 53:17Speaker 4: the players.
- 53:18Speaker 6: The parents, fans. Oh, I've got it. I do.
- 53:21Speaker 4: I do think that there is there is this how
- 53:25Speaker 4: do we make how do we make it better? How
- 53:27Speaker 4: do we make everybody happy? But again, let your kid play?
- 53:34Speaker 4: But that's not where we ask And that's the problem.
- 53:38Speaker 4: That's the problem. Whether we want to own it or not,
- 53:41Speaker 4: the problem is is you got the dad yelling at
- 53:44Speaker 4: the coach over the fence.
- 53:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:48Speaker 4: Yeah, you're yelling at the officials. You're doing all these
- 53:50Speaker 4: kind of crazy stuff that does not create a positive
- 53:55Speaker 4: experience for the kid who who I love to play,
- 54:01Speaker 4: but gets tired of hearing that dad talk about how
- 54:05Speaker 4: bad the coach is on the way home. My dad,
- 54:09Speaker 4: they never my dad never said anything negative about a
- 54:12Speaker 4: single coach I had, and I ain't win a whole
- 54:16Speaker 4: bunch of championships or none of that kind of stuff.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Why did he not have anything to say with them?
- 54:22Speaker 4: My dad's stop process. It's you, you playing you the guy.
- 54:26Speaker 4: But I'm saying, in a modern environment, it's how do
- 54:30Speaker 4: we get how do we get around.
- 54:32Speaker 6: That toxic itself.
- 54:34Speaker 4: It has become toxic, very tight because people love the game.
- 54:38Speaker 4: They love it and it's only a find out amount,
- 54:40Speaker 4: just like basketball where you're playing thirty games, right, so
- 54:44Speaker 4: you can take some losses here and there. But I'm saying, like,
- 54:46Speaker 4: how do we auto correct? It's like, what's the solution
- 54:49Speaker 4: if we don't, If we don't fix you sports, that's
- 54:52Speaker 4: a good point.
- 54:53Speaker 6: If we don't fix you sports.
- 54:56Speaker 4: Parents, guardians, friends, family are gonna tear it up middle
- 55:04Speaker 4: school football.
- 55:07Speaker 6: And then if you don't fix.
- 55:08Speaker 4: It there, you'll you'll you'll tear up high school. It's
- 55:17Speaker 4: tore from the floor, and and and and and and
- 55:20Speaker 4: the reality to that is, don't worry about college because
- 55:23Speaker 4: it ain't happening.
- 55:26Speaker 6: When you get to college, you shut off. You are
- 55:29Speaker 6: shut off. You get nothing.
- 55:30Speaker 4: But I would even say this about college man, and
- 55:32Speaker 4: I love Prime. But they asked Prime a question about
- 55:36Speaker 4: like far as different teams that Shador and Travis Hunter
- 55:39Speaker 4: would go to, and he was He alluded to the
- 55:41Speaker 4: fact that he would potentially step in behind the scenes
- 55:44Speaker 4: and say, hey, don't go here, don't draft him here,
- 55:46Speaker 4: we go there. So it's like and again he got
- 55:49Speaker 4: the grace and the talent and the cachet to maybe
- 55:51Speaker 4: do that, but but we got other people who maybe don't.
- 55:56Speaker 4: So it's like it's so it's going from all the ways. Well,
- 55:58Speaker 4: the question you to the professionals. The question where the
- 56:02Speaker 4: question will be answered in that is really what Prime
- 56:07Speaker 4: does after this season.
- 56:09Speaker 6: But it ain't about Prime. I'm not trying to make
- 56:10Speaker 6: it about him.
- 56:11Speaker 4: I'm saying we have parents now who have that same
- 56:14Speaker 4: thought presses who ain't you see what I'm saying, right,
- 56:17Speaker 4: they have.
- 56:17Speaker 6: That thought process from Little League all the way.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Up, and I don't, and and and and at least
- 56:23Speaker 4: I think part of that is is because they think
- 56:25Speaker 4: they need to like they need to help.
- 56:28Speaker 6: The coach to work with their kid.
- 56:31Speaker 4: You know, now, you football, a lot of coaches might
- 56:34Speaker 4: have played high school football and that that's the max
- 56:36Speaker 4: that they play.
- 56:37Speaker 6: Some of them may not even play.
- 56:38Speaker 4: High school ball, but but they're out there, they're giving
- 56:41Speaker 4: their time. If you want to give your time and
- 56:44Speaker 4: get out there, get come on, but don't do it
- 56:46Speaker 4: from the bleachers.
- 56:47Speaker 6: Don't do it from the fence.
- 56:49Speaker 5: That's and that's where it starts. That's where the where
- 56:52Speaker 5: it starts.
- 56:53Speaker 7: And then I just wanted to add it a point
- 56:55Speaker 7: back to what you were saying with the toxic kind.
- 56:58Speaker 5: Of feel where we're experience and seeing here in West Virginia.
- 57:01Speaker 7: I think what happens with fans and with with the
- 57:04Speaker 7: state in general, both WU and Marshall fans, is we're
- 57:09Speaker 7: comparing these newer coaches to the old coaches that were
- 57:14Speaker 7: in a time that didn't have to deal with nil.
- 57:16Speaker 7: Those coaches didn't have to deal with the transfer portal.
- 57:20Speaker 7: They could win because the playing field was a little
- 57:23Speaker 7: more even than it is now. You know, we're not
- 57:25Speaker 7: talking about just being able to recruit a player because
- 57:28Speaker 7: you're a good coach and you know the school has
- 57:31Speaker 7: has you know, character. Now we're talking about how much
- 57:34Speaker 7: money are you going to give me? What what kind
- 57:36Speaker 7: of contracts am I going to sign with if I
- 57:38Speaker 7: come to your school? So comparing, you know, it's like
- 57:41Speaker 7: comparing apples and oranges, the down Neeland's and the Bob
- 57:44Speaker 7: Prewitz of yesterday that that did have winning traditions to
- 57:48Speaker 7: the Huffs and the Browns because they they're in a
- 57:51Speaker 7: completely different world.
- 57:52Speaker 4: That's great that that's probably the point of the subject there.
- 57:59Speaker 6: I mean, because and.
- 58:01Speaker 7: Fans forget that I mean, I think we all just
- 58:03Speaker 7: want to win so badly, and do you remember when
- 58:05Speaker 7: we did?
- 58:05Speaker 6: Do they forget or just do they just not the forget?
- 58:08Speaker 5: They forget?
- 58:09Speaker 4: I was gonna say, because I think there could be
- 58:11Speaker 4: the case that it's not even it's not even really relevant. No,
- 58:14Speaker 4: they forget, they forgot, as you hear that all the
- 58:16Speaker 4: time pre Rich ride back, and I've said that, bring
- 58:18Speaker 4: da Da Da.
- 58:19Speaker 6: But it's two different environments.
- 58:22Speaker 4: I mean, could could you imagine what what what would
- 58:24Speaker 4: be the chance of Randy Moss staying at Marshall within
- 58:28Speaker 4: I L No no chance, no chance, zero and and
- 58:34Speaker 4: and and his future is not gonna change, but the
- 58:37Speaker 4: reality of Marshall's opportunity.
- 58:42Speaker 5: Would have changed everything everything.
- 58:44Speaker 4: And again you got a quarterback. What happened with Pennington?
- 58:49Speaker 6: Would he had stayed at Marshall? No, I mean that team.
- 58:52Speaker 4: Would have been, That team would have been That team
- 58:55Speaker 4: was loaded, Yes, it was loaded.
- 58:58Speaker 6: And so there's no single way that with n I
- 59:01Speaker 6: L they stay there. Yeah.
