Transcript
- 0:00It's most things. Kenobi an Elegant.
- 0:03Podcast. For a more.
- 0:05Civilized fandom. Hi everyone.
- 0:21Welcome to another episode of Most Things Kenobi, a podcast
- 0:24about Obi Wan Kenobi and all things Star Wars.
- 0:27I'm your host, Lauren. And I'm your host Leanne.
- 0:30And this week we are finishing up our series on the actors who
- 0:34have portrayed Obi Wan Kenobi with Steven Stanton.
- 0:38Yes, he's only well, I mean he's done Obi Wan a few times, but we
- 0:44are particularly talking about his performance in Rebels today,
- 0:47which is just one episode, but still a very important and
- 0:51impactful one. I mean, he's.
- 0:53Very. Before we started recording, we
- 0:55were just talking and Leanne, you were saying he's done Obi
- 0:57Wan and some video games and some other stuff already, so.
- 1:01Oh yeah, yeah. And he shows up in Clone Wars as
- 1:04different characters all the time, most notably.
- 1:08One of my favorite characters. Tarkin.
- 1:10Yes, Which? Shame on me.
- 1:15I didn't realize it was Steven. So that's what's so.
- 1:19Cool about him I think is his voice is so changeable.
- 1:23It's amazing. Yes.
- 1:25And he sounds so realistically like OG Tarkin that I that we
- 1:32were talking about that in the the James Arnold Taylor episode
- 1:34when you're not thinking it's the actor.
- 1:37Yes, yeah. Then they're doing it properly
- 1:39and so I I just go along in life thinking it's the character
- 1:43which is is a credit to the actor or actress themselves, so.
- 1:48Yes, for sure. I I love Tarkin so much and you
- 1:52know Guy oh gosh what's his last name.
- 1:56I'm. I'm totally blanking.
- 1:58The guy who plays him in Rogue One.
- 2:00I think his name is actually Guy.
- 2:01Guy Henry I think is his name maybe.
- 2:04Sorry if I'm wrong. Even he is so good as Tarkin.
- 2:07I forget that it's it's not Peter Krushing and I've actually
- 2:11I've. I went back and looked, 'cause I
- 2:13was like, is it guy doing the voice?
- 2:16Because it also sounds like Steven Stanton and they all
- 2:20doing their own version, but it's so similar.
- 2:22It's amazing. I have to say, since we're
- 2:27talking about the Obi Wan and Steven Stanton rounds it out in
- 2:31Rebels. Very important scene.
- 2:33Like you said, he sounds more like Alec Guinness than all of
- 2:39the above. The I mean, not, not not more
- 2:44than Alec, but I mean all of the above that we've covered.
- 2:49Not including Alec. Which is great, because at this
- 2:52point in the timeline, he's the closest to Alec Guinness's
- 2:57character's age, status, point in life, etcetera.
- 3:03Right. So he does an extremely good job
- 3:06of again bridging the gap between James Arnold, Taylor,
- 3:10Ewan McGregor, the timeline and then Alec Guinness.
- 3:14So it's a crucial moment captured and.
- 3:20Yeah. A scene that people hail as one
- 3:22of the best. It's so interesting to rewatch
- 3:27it now that we have the Kenobi series.
- 3:29It really is though, because oh God, in the little the little
- 3:33Luke that that it it's like look who can she calls and it's just
- 3:38like, oh shivers goosebumps every single time.
- 3:42But you're right though re watching it with the Kenobi
- 3:46series in mind is kind of weird, but like a good weird.
- 3:49Yeah, it adds so much more meaning to everything, honestly.
- 3:54Like what Obi Wan is saying, but also his composure in the
- 3:58moment. Yeah, it's.
- 3:59Wild. Here's what struck me right.
- 4:02It's like Maul is his lifelong nemesis.
- 4:04Basically, he started Obi Wan's life at a whole new trajectory.
- 4:09And every time they come together, Obi Wan gets so
- 4:14flustered and he, he holds his own pretty well and he gets
- 4:18better and better with each confrontation.
- 4:20I mean, the first confrontation, he literally cuts him in half.
- 4:23So I guess that started out pretty good, but then.
- 4:25Well, when you set the bar that high.
- 4:27Right, right. But what struck me about this is
- 4:32he is so calm. Everything about him is
- 4:37controlled. He's really sure of what he's
- 4:41about and Maul is just not getting under his skin like he
- 4:45usually does. And he's trying all the old
- 4:47tricks. Yes, all of it is like Maul is
- 4:51still the same and as we've always said, Obi Wan learns and
- 4:54grows. Yes.
- 4:56And I really now looking back with the Kenobi series, Obi Wan
- 5:01already faced his darkest. It's.
- 5:03True Demon and Samal is nothing compared to Vader and Anakin.
- 5:09Right after that. I mean after you face the mental
- 5:14and physical challenge. And there was both.
- 5:17He's literally hurling boulders, OK, after doubting himself for
- 5:23so long and dealing with the end of an era, if you will, and a
- 5:28friendship. And fear.
- 5:31Fear in himself. Fear of all this, everything
- 5:34with the children. And it's so depressing.
- 5:38And he rises again from the ashes.
- 5:42Literally. And Maul is nothing.
- 5:45A gnat on a cow's ass. Just swat.
- 5:53That's awful what I just said, but no.
- 5:55But it's true. I love it actually, cause Maul
- 5:59is so obsessed and wrapped up. Yeah, and Obi Wan has moved on
- 6:05already, yeah. He's got other shit to worry
- 6:08about. Which is the best kind of
- 6:10revenge? It is.
- 6:11It is. That is the thing like the best.
- 6:15Well, isn't it? The best revenge is when you
- 6:18move. On Yeah, Life well lived, I
- 6:20think is an yes. That's it.
- 6:21Thank you. Thank you.
- 6:23Yeah, that. I mean, not that he's living
- 6:25exactly like, well in the desert being a shut in, but he's got
- 6:30purpose now that Trump's everything.
- 6:32Right, exactly. He's he's forgiven himself for
- 6:38Satine, for Anakin, for, you know, or at least has come to
- 6:42terms with enough to move on. Yeah.
- 6:46And I think that at this point we're seeing Obi Wan kind of at
- 6:51his peak, and not because I mean like obviously Clone the Clone
- 6:56Wars was so fucking badass. And the Kenobi series fighting
- 6:59Vader, that was so awesome. But this is a true like this is
- 7:05a Grandmaster kind of mentality. He's.
- 7:09Calm. He defeats Maul instantly
- 7:13because he's so certain of his purpose to protect Luke and he's
- 7:17just in control. It's like his connection with
- 7:20the Force, it's probably the strongest it's ever been, which
- 7:23is crazy, 'cause he had shut himself off from it for so.
- 7:26Long, yeah. Yeah.
- 7:28Yeah, I just. I think it's really cool to see.
- 7:31It is, and all of this is reflected in the the tone of
- 7:36voice that Steven delivers in in the short scene.
- 7:41But it's required because too high pitch would be too nervous,
- 7:46too low pitch wouldn't be believable.
- 7:48You have to come in feeling like you've lived all of this, even
- 7:54if you haven't voiced it. You know what I mean?
- 7:56Yes. So true.
- 7:58Oh my gosh, yes. But he's Steven Stanton's been
- 8:01there in Clone Wars and has seen it.
- 8:03So he has some knowledge. I mean, he's been.
- 8:06There, he's been the one provoking Obi Wan into
- 8:09annoyance. Literally.
- 8:12So it's not like he doesn't have knowledge or he has to ignore
- 8:18certain knowledges. Knowledge base like like James
- 8:21Arnold Taylor had to do ignore right?
- 8:23Knowing the end of Revenge of the Sith, that sort of thing.
- 8:26So he had a whole catalog to pull from and delivered
- 8:32extremely well. His voice is so perfect like
- 8:36his. Like you said, his Alec Guinness
- 8:38is so perfect. It's.
- 8:40Really good. I wonder if you put him side by
- 8:42side if you could tell one or the other.
- 8:45You probably could if you're an obsessed Star Wars fan, but I
- 8:48bet for some people who aren't as versed in it, you might not
- 8:51be able to tell the difference. Well, especially if you're
- 8:54watching them out of order and not watching them back-to-back.
- 8:57It would be easy to. But I don't wanna.
- 9:00I don't. I kind of wanna listen to him
- 9:02back-to-back, but I also don't. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:05You know, but it would be interesting to do so.
- 9:09I should probably I should do that once.
- 9:12Well, the fact that he can do both Peter Cushing and Alec
- 9:15Guinness perfectly is pretty, pretty interesting.
- 9:18It's like they're both actors from the same era and clearly
- 9:22Stevens voice is like in that range, just perfectly.
- 9:26And he's got to have a really good ear cause holy crap.
- 9:30He's labeled as a voice match artist.
- 9:35That makes sense. Right, It makes sense.
- 9:37But how hard would that be? I don't know how people do that.
- 9:42Like, I always think of Jimmy Fallon, who can.
- 9:45It seems as though he can match anyone's voice singing, you
- 9:50know, just regular talking. It's so wild at just that your
- 9:54vocal cords can do that. I don't know.
- 9:56But it's he's also Admiral Raddis in Rogue One, which we
- 10:00talked about before we started. Oh yeah.
- 10:02Yeah, I love. I love that character.
- 10:04I went back and re listened to before this episode as well and
- 10:07I was like, I can't tell, I can't, you know.
- 10:12I feel like playing Aman Calamari is like a voice actor's
- 10:15dream like that. Totally fun.
- 10:19Kind of character to play. They're their own, like,
- 10:22distinct race. Like I feel if you're going to
- 10:25step up to the plate and do a Mon Calamari, you have to
- 10:29There's a there's a set rule book on what you have to sound
- 10:34like. You also have to sound like
- 10:36you're you're missing water. Yes.
- 10:39Like you're literally fish out of water.
- 10:43Yes, you're somehow living, but it's notable that you're
- 10:48supposed to be in water. It's very, I don't know, Star
- 10:52Wars is so unique in that respect that they have these
- 10:55races that are so random. I love it.
- 10:58I love it. I love it.
- 10:59I. Love it.
- 11:00I just love. They always sound like they're
- 11:01breathing through gills, so it's just like, yes.
- 11:04Yeah, they have. They have a a Flemmi problem, a
- 11:08flem problem. Somewhere in their throat, yes,
- 11:10but it's also not gross. Right.
- 11:12It's somehow endearing. Yeah, it's very.
- 11:16I love it. I love it.
- 11:17And James Arnold Taylor is the voice of oh God, now what's his
- 11:20name? It's the It's the Mom calamari
- 11:22in the ride at Disney World. The Rise and resistance.
- 11:25Lieutenant Beck. Yes, Beck.
- 11:28Yes. Yes.
- 11:30So he said is based on John Hurt, which I just love, 'cause
- 11:33I love John Hurt. I just love that so much.
- 11:37So that's that's fun. I love all these Mon Calamari.
- 11:40Did you? Know Anna Graves plays the Mon
- 11:42Calamari, also in one of the Clone Wars episodes.
- 11:45Really. Yeah, it's that one.
- 11:47It's like the beginning. Of underwater.
- 11:48Yeah, it's like season three or four.
- 11:51It's like the first episodes are like it's a four part arc.
- 11:54And yeah, it's all lightsabers work underwater.
- 11:57Yeah, yeah, Kit Fisto was really shining.
- 12:00He was all of his hair, his hair, his tentacles.
- 12:03Whatever you want to call that? Yeah.
- 12:04Yeah, I love that he has. Like, small aside folks, but I
- 12:08love that he has like gold rings or leather ties or something on
- 12:12his like he decorates them. I love that.
- 12:14I love. I think.
- 12:15I also love that he's always smiling.
- 12:18Yes, he gives 0 fucks about anything.
- 12:22He's one of those guys. I love those guys, 'cause I'm
- 12:24not that person. I know I care too much.
- 12:28I do too. But look at him.
- 12:30He's making his way through life, smiling.
- 12:34Hey, Steven Stanton is also Tarkin in The Bad Batch.
- 12:39Oh yeah, And he has to, like, kind of age his voice down a
- 12:42little bit, 'cause he was little bit.
- 12:44I heard an interview where he was saying when he did Tarkin
- 12:46and Clone Wars, he had gone back and watched Peter Cushing's
- 12:50early stuff, 'cause he, I guess Peter Cushing came over from
- 12:54England and lived in Hollywood for a long time.
- 12:56And so he was in some old Hollywood movies and he said his
- 13:00voice was pitched really high. So he was trying to recreate
- 13:05that but not go so high that people would be like, that's not
- 13:07Target, right? So I feel like in Bad Batch he
- 13:11like lowers down more into what we know from A New Hope.
- 13:15Yes, I agree. He was born in Germany.
- 13:19Really. Is he German?
- 13:21Is he? Like he is German born American.
- 13:25How interesting. I never knew that.
- 13:27He was in born in Augsburg, Bavaria, West Germany.
- 13:33I hope I pronounced that properly.
- 13:36That's interesting. I wonder if that's why he can,
- 13:38like, hear, you know, other accents and recreate them,
- 13:41'cause did he have American parents?
- 13:43Does it say? It doesn't.
- 13:46Say hmm. Interesting.
- 13:47German born American. He was born there in 1961.
- 13:52He's a voice double for. Listen to this lineup, OK?
- 13:59Voice double for Tim Allen, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Peter
- 14:06Cushing, Robert Downey Junior, Right.
- 14:10Wow. Roger, Roger Ebert, Jeff
- 14:13Goldblum. I could see Jeff Goldblum.
- 14:17I could see Jeff Goldblum, Alec Guinness, of course.
- 14:21Clive Owen, Bruce Willis. Wow.
- 14:26Invention. Vincent Schiavelli.
- 14:29Schiavelli. Schiavelli.
- 14:31I'm not familiar with me neither and.
- 14:34I'm sorry, I can't pronounce it, but he's on theme park
- 14:38attractions, Disney television series.
- 14:41He's in video games, most notably Battlefront.
- 14:43Star Wars Battlefront as both Maul and Ben Kenobi, which is.
- 14:49I would love to hear his. Maul, I know.
- 14:53He's also Alliance Officer #1 Oh, OK.
- 14:58Which I love, you know. He he did a Droid too, in.
- 15:03I'm not being able to remember the exact letter combination in
- 15:07Rebels. He was like AD 5 or AP5 or
- 15:11whatever it was. But that voice is based on Alan
- 15:14Rickman. Shut up.
- 15:16Really. Yeah.
- 15:18Oh my God. He said he was inspired by Alan
- 15:22Rickman's Hans Gruber from Die Hard So I.
- 15:24Oh my God. Rest in peace, Alan Rickman.
- 15:27You're a fucking legend. He's one of my favorite humans
- 15:32that have ever lived. You know what's wild is that
- 15:35Steven Stanton voiced Legolas the elf in the video game Lord
- 15:40of the Rings. The battle for Middle Middle
- 15:42Earth, which I've never played, but I I honestly have a hard
- 15:46time picturing him sounding like Legolas.
- 15:50So I might have to like search that out on YouTube or something
- 15:53to hear it because he elves have a very distinct way of speaking
- 15:58and and their voices and stuff, so that'd be interesting.
- 16:01Is that the, that's the Orlando Bloom character, right?
- 16:04So he's kind of got a lighter. Like I would describe him as
- 16:07more like a boyish character, but.
- 16:10Yeah, because elves are eternal. They live forever and they have
- 16:14sing songy voices. They're supposed to be ethereal
- 16:17in nature. So interesting to hear how?
- 16:20I gotta look it up. So anyway, that's just a a few
- 16:25trivia points there. It's just wild that among
- 16:29everything he's he's done all of this and is a voice double for
- 16:35all those I feel Goldblum, ma'am.
- 16:38I mean, I would. I would pay money to see that I
- 16:41wanna. I love people's Jeff Goldblum's
- 16:43impressions 'cause I love Jeff Goldblum.
- 16:45He's so strange, but also so fascinating.
- 16:49You know, he and I share a birthday.
- 16:52Oh really? He's the only one on that shares
- 16:55my birthday that I give a shit about.
- 16:58It's like, yes, I have a crazy, psycho, crazy man on my
- 17:02birthday. It's great.
- 17:06I love him. He's so ridiculous.
- 17:08He's. Got like the greatest monologue
- 17:10in Jurassic Park? How did this turn into Jeff
- 17:13Goldblum? Well, because Steven Stan voiced
- 17:15Jeff Goldblum, yes. Yes, correct.
- 17:17It's. Connected.
- 17:18Degrees. Unlike in our last episode,
- 17:20where we tangented off onto Big Lebowski territory for.
- 17:25It's bound to happen. Has anyone drawn or or voiced
- 17:29him in Jelly sandals yet? Question mark?
- 17:33Still waiting. It's bound to happen with these
- 17:37voice actors, 'cause they do so much right.
- 17:39And it's true. But maybe we should bring it
- 17:43back to what has Steven Stanton brought to the table as as Obi
- 17:46Wan, which we kind of already covered.
- 17:48Yeah, I mean he it's very clear that he's able to close the
- 17:52circle on bringing Obi Wan into Alec Guinness's performance.
- 17:57So he like, takes the whole story and and connects the dots,
- 18:02basically. And he does it so well that,
- 18:06like I said, you can barely tell that it's not actually elegant
- 18:09as himself. Right, right.
- 18:12And it sounds like an aged UN or James Arnold Taylor.
- 18:16At the same time, the accents there, the, the, there's,
- 18:19there's a hint of like there's knowledge of what he used to be
- 18:25prior to all this, which I think, if nothing else, you have
- 18:32to round it out in this moment and you have to bring what the
- 18:36audience already knows about this character at this moment.
- 18:40Yeah, they're going to have expectations for sure.
- 18:42Yeah, and I think he does. He does it perfectly.
- 18:46I have a question. Who voices the Anakin in Rebels?
- 18:49You know that it's not actually Anakin.
- 18:52It's like a. The holocron.
- 18:53Or whatever. Holocron, yeah.
- 18:55It's Matt Lanter. It is OK.
- 18:58Yeah, the and like James does voice Obi Wan in Rebels, but
- 19:02just in the holocron video that shows like the message he
- 19:06basically sent out. Which is appropriate because it
- 19:09was recorded at the time that James Arnold Taylor's was Obi.
- 19:15Obi Wan was voiced by the timeline in Star Wars Is Crazy.
- 19:22And then to keep all of these actors and actresses straight
- 19:26like in the timeline is a is a task.
- 19:30It is. There's like a professional
- 19:33employee at Lucasfilm whose job is just keeping everyone in
- 19:36order in the timeline. Yes, yes.
- 19:39It's again the meme of all the pictures and things on the wall
- 19:44and connecting them. That's the timeline in Star
- 19:47Wars, and it's getting more convoluted.
- 19:49It is, yeah. It definitely is more and more
- 19:52complex. Actually, since I mentioned
- 19:54Anakin, we are going to do this series with the Anakin actors,
- 19:59are we? Yes, yes.
- 20:00And that's going to be so awesome.
- 20:03It's going to be we haven't spoken about Hayden Christensen
- 20:07yet, not in full. I know we hadn't talked about
- 20:10you in or Hayden really at all on the show, so it's time.
- 20:16It is time, yes. All right, so that's it.
- 20:25We've wrapped up all four actors, the main actors who have
- 20:28played Obi Wan Kenobi. Our question for you, which one
- 20:32is your favorite and why? Tell us, either on social media.
- 20:36Tell us on Spotify. Drop us an e-mail and we might
- 20:40read it on next week's episode. Speaking of next week's episode,
- 20:44we're starting the new series, the next series covering the
- 20:48Anakin actors, and there are three of them.
- 20:52We're starting with Jake Lloyd, who was first Anakin in the
- 20:57prequels as Little Baby Anakin, Little Little Child Anakin and
- 21:03all that. He ended up becoming an older
- 21:05Anakin. So we'll do Jake Lloyd, followed
- 21:08by Hayden Christensen, followed by Matt Lanter.
- 21:11So join us back next week for Jake Lloyd.
