- 0:00But they hardened their hearts and could not enter His rest
- 0:04while in the wilderness. And then the Lord defines what
- 0:08rest means, which rest is the fullness of His glory.
- 0:13This is a wonderful definition. Use this word throughout all
- 0:17scripture. The rest of the Lord is the
- 0:20fullness of His glory. I'm so grateful for the Joseph
- 0:25Smith translation to realize that the higher law was
- 0:28originally given and that's why he was welcoming the people to
- 0:31climb the mount and enter into his presence, but they could not
- 0:35receive it. They did not have Shalom.
- 0:40Welcome back to Scripture Central.
- 0:41I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson. I'm here to talk about Exodus 19
- 0:46through 34. Now on the Come Follow Me
- 0:49program. We only have 7 chapters, but
- 0:51there's some fabulous chapters on the women in between there.
- 0:54So I'm just going to add in a few tidbits as we look at the
- 0:57hared maidens and the harems and the heroines.
- 0:59And we're going to look at a lot more women than just those 3
- 1:02today in this brief overview of this wonderful time in the
- 1:08biblical story of the Exodus from Egypt as the children of
- 1:13Israel are making their way to Sinai.
- 1:16And this chapter talks about women becoming prepared to enter
- 1:21the presence of the Lord, women and men and children purifying
- 1:25themselves, becoming sanctified. I love these chapters.
- 1:28I think they apply to our own lives.
- 1:30Now. I feel like we again are at the
- 1:33foot of Sinai and the Lord is petitioning us, begging us,
- 1:37calling us to climb the mountain.
- 1:40We have two traditional sites for Sinai, and it may be
- 1:43someplace else entirely. 1 is clear over on the side of Midian
- 1:48by across the Red Sea, and the other is a little closer to
- 1:52Egypt down in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula.
- 1:57I I'm not going to worry about the archaeology.
- 2:02I'm going to worry about the text.
- 2:04And then hopefully the more we dig and the more we find, the
- 2:08more information we can have to stand up and build up the
- 2:12information we have in the Bible.
- 2:13But these children of Israel arrived at Sinai about two
- 2:17months after Passover. It says that it's the first day
- 2:21of the third month. So usually we refer to the time
- 2:26when Moses goes up to Sinai and sees the Lord again after the
- 2:30Israelites are with him as a Pentecost, and that's celebrated
- 2:35as the Feast of Weeks or 7 * 7 or the 50th day after Passover.
- 2:43But God calls all the Israelites to come unto him, and I love the
- 2:47way this is set stated in Exodus 19/6.
- 2:51He says, come unto me, a Kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
- 2:57Now in the ancient world we always identified this as a
- 3:03singular male calling a Kingdom of priests.
- 3:07But in the Restoration, the whole purpose of the restoration
- 3:11is to build a Kingdom of priests and priestesses to prepare the
- 3:16way for the Lord's second coming, to gather Israel, to
- 3:20redeem Zion, and to have the nations of the world exposed to
- 3:26our Savior Jesus Christ. We are doing the same thing that
- 3:31these Israelites were trying to do, and I hope that you can feel
- 3:35a connection with them in these chapters.
- 3:39So the Lord commands Moses to tell them that they they have to
- 3:42do this purification ritual. It includes washing their
- 3:45clothes and, and being sanctified.
- 3:48And the same word for purify is in Hebrew at least, is sanctify
- 3:53or consecrate hope to become holy, to make clean.
- 3:59And so they're going for three days to go through this
- 4:02purification process. I absolutely love it.
- 4:05You know, sometimes people go through dietary cleansings and
- 4:10and things like that, but this is a spiritual cleansing.
- 4:14And on the third day, the Israelites, the men and women
- 4:18and children were to enter into the presence of the Lord.
- 4:22And Moses added, come not at your wives.
- 4:25So for some reason in this ancient general sentiment, there
- 4:30was a ceremonial uncleanliness even in a chaste marital
- 4:34relationship. But they said, let's have
- 4:35abstinence for three days. So we are completely focusing on
- 4:39our God. And this ritual purification
- 4:42then continues on. And we're told in verse 11 that
- 4:46the Lord will come down in the sight of the people upon the
- 4:50mount. And in restored Scripture it's
- 4:53repeated that Moses sought diligently to sanctify the
- 4:56people that they might behold the face of God.
- 5:00This is section 84. This is the oath and covenant of
- 5:02the priesthood. That's verse 23 that says God
- 5:06was trying to not just sanctify Moses, but all of the people
- 5:10were to enter into his presence and it didn't happen.
- 5:14And then one of my happiest verses is chapter 19, verse 8,
- 5:18when all the people, the children of Israel all responded
- 5:22together. We will do everything the Lord
- 5:25has said. We have a unified people that
- 5:29want to do this. We will do everything the Lord
- 5:33has said is the NIV translation. And that's how I hope you're
- 5:37feeling right now when I raise my hand to sustain the prophet,
- 5:42not only in general conferences, but in ward conferences and in
- 5:45weekly church services and in my temple service.
- 5:49I hope that we as a people can feel that same unity.
- 5:54I want to do everything God has commanded and I feel unity with
- 5:57those of you who can raise your voice and say the same.
- 6:00In Exodus chapter 19 verse 9 to 11 in the NIV it reads that the
- 6:05Lord said unto Moses, I'm going to come to you in a dense cloud
- 6:09so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will
- 6:13always put their trust in you. This is wonderful as someone who
- 6:18seeks the Spirit. It is a rare and beautiful event
- 6:22when I actually hear words, but to be able to hear the prophets
- 6:27counsel from God would have been so awesome.
- 6:33And but the Lord also instructs Moses.
- 6:36I don't want them to rush up to the cloud.
- 6:39So set a boundary around the mountain and tell the people not
- 6:43to come up. Be careful.
- 6:44That's in verse 12. And Moses then for these three
- 6:48days sanctifies the people. You know, they're they're
- 6:50washing their clothes, they're preparing to meet God.
- 6:53And then in verse 17, it says Moses brought forth the people
- 6:57out of the camp to meet with God.
- 7:00Going back to this oath and covenant of the priesthood,
- 7:03Doctrine Covenant, section 84, verse 23, this is when Moses
- 7:07sought diligently to sanctify the people.
- 7:09Skipping down a little bit, it says, But they hardened their
- 7:14hearts and could not enter His rest while in the wilderness.
- 7:18And then the Lord defines what rest means, which rest is the
- 7:22fullness of His glory. This is a wonderful definition.
- 7:27Use this word throughout all scripture.
- 7:30The rest of the Lord is the fullness of His glory.
- 7:36This is especially interesting to me as we look at our Sabbath
- 7:39worship a little bit later. But in verse 20, the Lord comes
- 7:43down upon the mount of Sinai, and the top of the mountain of
- 7:46the Lord calls Moses up. There's great signs in the
- 7:50heavens. The people are all able to see
- 7:53it. And he receives in Exodus 20 the
- 7:5710 commandments, but we're told in in the Joseph Smith
- 8:01translation that there was a lot more received.
- 8:05I'm so grateful for that Joseph Smith translation that has
- 8:09opened our eyes to this wonderful bit of information.
- 8:13You know, I had all of my children memorize the 10
- 8:16commandments when they were young, and I'm interested that
- 8:19all 10 are applicable to men, women, and children.
- 8:23I'm so grateful for the Joseph Smith translation to realize
- 8:26that the higher law was originally given and that's why
- 8:29he was welcoming the people to climb the mount and enter into
- 8:32his presence, but they could not receive it.
- 8:35They did not have this spiritual and emotional preparation that
- 8:41was required to follow through. And we read in the writings of
- 8:46the New Testament, in the book of Hebrews, where Paul or
- 8:49whoever the author is, says, you are once again at the foothills
- 8:53of Sinai. This time would you please climb
- 8:57the mount and enter into the presence of God?
- 8:59And then we have our beautiful section 84 where he again says,
- 9:04let us again climb the mount and receive these higher ordinances.
- 9:10The 10 commandments are beautiful and I appreciate them.
- 9:14In chapter 20. We're very grateful to also have
- 9:17the higher law in the Sermon at the Temple in 3rd Nephi and and
- 9:21the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 3 to 5.
- 9:25There's higher laws all over our Savior's ministry.
- 9:28Let's dive into just a few of these 10 commandments that
- 9:31specifically refer to women #5 honor your father and mother.
- 9:37This doesn't go away just for children.
- 9:39This is your entire lifelong and after their passing, we can
- 9:44honor them and be grateful for bringing into our bringing us to
- 9:48life regardless of the challenges that you have had.
- 9:53Sometimes people aren't thrilled with their parentage, and
- 9:56sometimes we're not thrilled with the way we're parents
- 9:58either. But I'd like to give people the
- 10:01benefit of the doubt and and honor that they're doing the
- 10:04best they can and strive to live this commandment more
- 10:08thoroughly. But mothers are called out,
- 10:10which I'm very grateful for. Also, we are told in the 10th
- 10:15article of faith not to covet your neighbor's wife.
- 10:18And adultery is the word that's used often in the Old Testament,
- 10:22but it informs all forms of illicit sexual behaviors.
- 10:27Pornea is the word in Greek and, and Hebrew is similar to the
- 10:32idea that it, it's not just the act of adultery, it's
- 10:35fornication, it's pornography. It's it's looking where you
- 10:38shouldn't and thinking what you shouldn't and, and, and
- 10:41indulging in what you shouldn't. And this is a powerful message
- 10:45there as well. But the other 10 commandments
- 10:48also apply to women. You know, certainly the Sabbath
- 10:51day does this day of rest. And if you go back and think
- 10:56about it, as the rest of the Lord is entering into your
- 11:00exaltation, entering into the presence of the Lord, then on
- 11:03the 7th day let us enter into His presence.
- 11:07Let us figuratively take off our shoes during the sacrament and
- 11:11enter into His presence. Let us let us purify ourselves
- 11:16and wash our clothes and become people of God who are set apart
- 11:22and sanctified to become holy. And this is the day of of that
- 11:28fine tuning. I love it.
- 11:30It's mentioned all over the Doctrine and Covenants section
- 11:3319 that you may enter into my rest.
- 11:37We already mentioned section 84 where it says we're entering
- 11:40into the rest is the fullness of God's glory.
- 11:43But also in section 121, verse 32, it's mentioned entered into
- 11:47His eternal presence and into His immortal rest.
- 11:52You know, it's very clear that there's continuity with this
- 11:54word Exodus. Chapter 21 to 23 emphasizes the
- 11:58care of females in this culture. Now in our specific Come Follow
- 12:03me chapters, some of these had to be skipped over.
- 12:06It's it's too long to go through all of these, but I am thrilled
- 12:10to see in this section from chapters 21 to 23 that female
- 12:15slaves are talked about. That women who are abused,
- 12:19mothers who are abused, the punishments that are going to be
- 12:23given to those who abuse a woman, especially a woman who is
- 12:26expecting another child. We're the females who act as
- 12:30sorcerers or witches are condemned.
- 12:33And we have information on women who are barren.
- 12:36And I just am thrilled to see this messages from God, not just
- 12:42about his his priesthood leadership.
- 12:44You know, this is not just a leadership manual here.
- 12:46This is a text for families, for organizations, for humans,
- 12:52individuals, women, men and children who need to draw closer
- 12:58to God and how that's defined. And we'll talk a little bit more
- 13:02in the future about what it meant to be a Hebrew servant or
- 13:06a Hebrew slave. You know, they've just come from
- 13:07Egypt where there were slaves. And the idea that the Lord says
- 13:11I don't want you becoming servants and slaves.
- 13:14But if you are in such a situation that you absolutely
- 13:17have to sell yourself into slavery rather than being a
- 13:19street person, that's better. And you can only do it then for
- 13:23seven years and then you're released if you're a male.
- 13:26But if you're a female, it says that you have the opportunity to
- 13:31stay in that family and to become a concubine or a wife to
- 13:35your master or your master's son.
- 13:38It's a little bit different in in Deuteronomy, it sounds as if
- 13:41the women had a little bit of the choice in that matter.
- 13:43But if you are sold to a master to raise his seed, you will
- 13:48become his, his, his marital partner.
- 13:52And, and even that lasted through the New Testament times.
- 13:56We have lots of statements by the rabbi's about that it they
- 14:00had different roles as male and female servants and that's why
- 14:04if you were the master's wife or concubine, you were not let free
- 14:11after seven years and you stayed and you raised those children
- 14:14and you and you helped in the home as either a secondary wife.
- 14:19I assume in some situations the concubine secondary wife had had
- 14:25a good relationship, but it sounds as if that would have
- 14:28been difficult at the best. Very, very difficult.
- 14:32But the husbands and the fathers were allowed to sell their
- 14:36children into servitude if if necessary.
- 14:40And because marriages were often begun as soon as a woman could
- 14:44procreate, only very young children who were sold into
- 14:49servitude did not have to enter into some sort of a marriage if
- 14:52they were a girl in the age of childbearing.
- 14:55I'm really grateful though, that this idea of servitude, even
- 15:00though we're in a time period of slavery, the laws are different.
- 15:05It's more like an indentured servant, and Exodus chapter 21
- 15:09and 22 give some good guidelines.
- 15:13These are really quite radical for the ancient world.
- 15:17Now for our world, we think this is awful.
- 15:19A father can sell his daughter into a marriage with a master,
- 15:24but the truth of it is, compared to the other things that were
- 15:27opted for these ancient women, this is a gift.
- 15:32I'm also very, very grateful that we have examples in Exodus
- 15:36chapter 22 about widows and orphans and the extra care that
- 15:40they need. Verses 22 to 24 talks about that
- 15:43and it's it's beautiful. We'll talk a little bit more
- 15:46about the setting up of the Tabernacle next week.
- 15:49But as early as Exodus 26, they start giving us these hints that
- 15:54there's a pattern that was shown Moses up on the mountain of how
- 15:58to establish a House of God. And so there's a sneak preview
- 16:03for next week, even though it's in chapter 26.
- 16:06Now, I think one reason why it's saved is because it'll be the
- 16:09main topic next week. Let's now jump back into the
- 16:14Come Follow me chapters with Exodus chapter 31.
- 16:17And the Lord talks about the Sabbath being a sign.
- 16:21He says in verse 13, my Sabbaths are a sign between me and you
- 16:26throughout your generation that you may know that I am the Lord
- 16:31that does sanctify you. This beautiful idea of being
- 16:35sanctified, of being pure, of becoming holy on this day of
- 16:39rest is repeated many, many times in the Book of Mormon.
- 16:44The the theme of holiness, of becoming a people who are
- 16:48sanctified for the Lord is beautifully displayed there in
- 16:51the Restoration as well in the Doctrine Covenants.
- 16:54But I want to talk just for a minute about this idea of the
- 16:57Sabbath as a sign. If you looked at your weeks, are
- 17:01the things you're doing on the Sabbath a sign to God of your
- 17:05commitment to Him? Can you honestly say you are
- 17:10entering into his presence on this day?
- 17:14As I look at my own life, can I say I am more purified and
- 17:19sanctified through the things I'm doing on the Sabbath?
- 17:24Well, the first thing I think of is the sacrament and you better
- 17:27believe we are more sanctified as we have been repenting all
- 17:31week long and we come to the table and plead before the Lord
- 17:35for mercy. I believe that we can become
- 17:39more holy just in and of that one act, but the whole day long
- 17:43needs to represent this sanctity.
- 17:46And the Israelites were called, but as we learn later in the
- 17:51restoration as Joseph's in Liberty Jail, many are called,
- 17:55but few are chosen. And why are they not chosen?
- 17:59Joseph goes on to learn that they are not chosen because they
- 18:03think too much about the things of this world.
- 18:06Are our Sabbath's filled with things of this world or are they
- 18:10a sign a of our covenant with God?
- 18:14And is it a time period of sanctification?
- 18:16I love that phrase. Sanctus is holiness.
- 18:20Are we doing things that are holy before God?
- 18:24And it's hard with kids. I remember getting out the
- 18:27costumes and acting out scriptures.
- 18:29I remember having the Legos and saying we're building different
- 18:32temples. You know, I mean, you did
- 18:33everything you could to keep kids focused on the Sabbath, But
- 18:36it's, it's, it's difficult. And I hope the Lord will inspire
- 18:39you in your lives on how we can keep the Sabbath day more holy
- 18:43so that we can become a people who are sanctified by the Lord
- 18:49for His great work. I believe that Miriam and a lot
- 18:54of other women were part of the challenge of giving their
- 18:59earrings, their gold bracelets, their nose rings to Aaron to
- 19:05build this golden calf. And Aaron sounds like I couldn't
- 19:08do anything about it. They were going to kill me.
- 19:11I don't know about that. I'm not going to throw any rocks
- 19:14at Aaron. But I hope that a few of them
- 19:18rebuild. I hope a few of them walked
- 19:20away, and I hope a few of us will walk away from the golden
- 19:24calves in our day and age. You know, shortly before this,
- 19:27God had just asked them to become a Kingdom of priests and
- 19:31priestesses, a holy nation. And here we are within days of
- 19:37making that covenant. They have become so distracted
- 19:42that they are making a golden calf.
- 19:46Now I know there's lots of stories that say, oh, maybe the
- 19:48calf represented Jehovah, etcetera, etcetera.
- 19:51It's wrong. Now they don't have the 10
- 19:53commandments yet supposedly, but they had the law of Abraham,
- 19:58they had the law of Isaac and Jacob being passed down.
- 20:02So it's, it's a difficult thing, but we have golden calves in our
- 20:05lives. You know, we have many things
- 20:08that we spend our time, talents and energy on.
- 20:10And that is how you know what you're worshipping is where
- 20:13you're spending your time, talents and energy, where your
- 20:15heart goes. So instead of remembering the
- 20:19Lord's miraculous enabling power during those 40 days that Moses
- 20:23is up in being purified and taught by God, Aaron agreed to
- 20:28make this a God to go be for them.
- 20:32And it's Exodus 32, one through 4 when he fashioned A molten
- 20:36calf. When Moses comes down, you know,
- 20:40he's furious. He, he, he has the higher law.
- 20:45He destroys those tablets that were made by the Lord.
- 20:48And we learn in restored Scripture, he has to go back up
- 20:50and make his own now. And the Lord gives this lower
- 20:54law, which we now read in Exodus 20 as the 10 commandments.
- 20:59But as Moses wants to purify the people, again, there are 3000
- 21:03people who refuse to turn to the Lord, and they are cut down
- 21:09because this has got to be a holy people.
- 21:13I want to encourage you as you're doing your study this
- 21:15week to open up to the Joseph Smith translation and look at
- 21:19some of these wonderful editions.
- 21:21I love chapter 32, verse 14 when the Lord says to Moses only in
- 21:26the Joseph Smith translation, if they will repent of that evil
- 21:31which they have done, I will spare them.
- 21:33I'll turn away my first wrath. But behold, thou sought execute
- 21:38judgment upon all those that will not repent.
- 21:41And then of course we have the the those 3000 that choose not
- 21:46to not to follow Also in chapter 33 verse 20, we have a great
- 21:51Joseph Smith translation edition that says at this time, lest
- 21:57mine anger be kindled against you also, I will destroy thee
- 22:01and thy people. And then he skips down a little
- 22:04bit. And then the Joe Smith
- 22:05translation adds in again at this time, for they are
- 22:10exceeding sinful. And no sinful man hath at any
- 22:15time, neither shall there be any sinful man at any time that
- 22:21shall see my face and live. And I do not believe this is
- 22:25just a gift for males. I believe this is for females as
- 22:29well. The last Joseph Smith
- 22:30translation in chapter 34, verse one through 2 in our reading
- 22:34that I'd like to emphasize today, talks about how there was
- 22:38a higher law and a lower law. And here it reads, It shall not
- 22:43be according to the first. For I will take away the
- 22:46priesthood out of the midst of them, My holy order, and the
- 22:51ordinances thereof. For My presence shall not go up
- 22:56in their midst, lest I destroy them.
- 23:00But I will give unto them the law at the 1st and it shall be
- 23:04after the law of a carnal commandments.
- 23:08And the Lord goes on to talks about that they will not enter
- 23:11his presence under this law in the days of their pilgrimage.
- 23:16But we know that Enoch's people, Adam's people, the people of the
- 23:22time of Christ did enter into this higher law.
- 23:25And when Joseph Smith was organizing the Relief Society,
- 23:28he said, I want to organize you as a Kingdom of priestesses as
- 23:32in the time of Enoch and is in the time of Paul.
- 23:36And I feel like there could have been an opportunity for these
- 23:40people here to have done that, but their hearts were not ready.
- 23:43And so I plead to you that we make ourselves a holy nation as
- 23:49God has asked and as He has chosen you as his sons and
- 23:55daughters, that you will be able to lead your community in
- 24:01righteousness and that we too can be examples for goodness,
- 24:05that we too can be examples be doing the most important things.
- 24:10The last thing that we have in our scheme 34 is when they line
- 24:14up the importance of marrying within the covenant.
- 24:18And it's repeated in Joshua, it's repeated in Judges, It's
- 24:22repeated over and over throughout the Old Testament.
- 24:25Make sure your marriages are firmly grounded in the covenant.
- 24:30And those of you who are currently not married, may you
- 24:33ground your lives in our Savior Jesus Christ and find
- 24:38fulfillment in serving Him and in His Kingdom.
- 24:41And I pray that we can each do our part to build this Kingdom
- 24:46of priests and priestesses and climb that mountain and enter
- 24:51into His presence in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 24:55Amen.
