- 0:18Hello everyone and welcome to today's Unspoken Career Truths.
- 0:22On today's episode, we are going to be talking about soft power.
- 0:27And funny enough, I heard this term on ATV show.
- 0:31I was watching the Diplomat on Netflix, which just came out
- 0:35with a new season. And the vice president was
- 0:38talking to to the ambassador and she was saying that like her
- 0:41hair was unkempt and like her outfit wasn't really saying
- 0:44much. And just the way that she
- 0:46presented herself didn't necessarily exude power.
- 0:49And the vice president said all those things are examples of
- 0:53soft power. And it really got me thinking
- 0:55about other things that are soft power and what it means and how
- 0:59you can really impact it. So Carl, what do you, what do
- 1:02you think about that? Like what's your reaction when I
- 1:04say soft power? It's funny that you bring up
- 1:06both TV and international diplomacy, because for me, soft
- 1:10power is all about things like Voice of America or
- 1:14international aid. It's or or TV itself, right?
- 1:18It's all the things that we export from our country or we
- 1:22exude when we're individuals that other people like or aspire
- 1:26to or it gives us like a steam or power in a way that is not
- 1:31direct at all. But actually people can look at
- 1:34the US and say, oh, that's like a country I want to be like, or
- 1:37look at you at the office and say that's a person that I want
- 1:40to listen to. Everything from having a candy
- 1:43dish on your desk to being one of the largest producers of
- 1:47blockbuster hit. I love that.
- 1:48And I think the reason why I wanted to bring this up and at
- 1:51the end of our season really is because I feel like the concept
- 1:55of soft power is kind of a culmination of a lot of things
- 1:57we've talked about. We've talked about influence,
- 2:00we've talked about like your circle, we've talked about
- 2:02value. We've talked about a lot of
- 2:04things that are connected to soft power.
- 2:08And if I were to define it, soft power at work is the ability to
- 2:13influence and persuade colleagues and stakeholders
- 2:15through personal attraction, credibility, and respect, rather
- 2:19than through coercion or authority.
- 2:22So like the opposite would be hard power, which is like very
- 2:24hierarchical authority. But Carl, I know you have a
- 2:28perspective on the difference between soft power and
- 2:30influence, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.
- 2:33I mean, I think the soft power is a kind of influence like in
- 2:36everything that you're saying where we there are a lot of
- 2:40things that you can do to make yourself attractive to sort of
- 2:44like I've heard it used as you sort of Co opt instead of
- 2:47coerce. And so people want to align with
- 2:50your 'cause it's from everything from you setting a great vision
- 2:54to you kind of again, being the person who gets things done.
- 2:57Like what kind of reputation have you built at the office?
- 3:00What other people are you working with that other people
- 3:02want to be in? Sort of like you're in click,
- 3:04all of those things, some of them strategic, some of them
- 3:07personality driven that do exert influence, but they it's
- 3:12influenced in one specific way and there's so many other ways
- 3:15to build influence. An example I always think of for
- 3:18this one is have you ever met someone that when they walk into
- 3:21a room like, and they just have a presence and like they, they
- 3:25have confidence and they have authority and like, they just
- 3:28have a certain way about them? I look at that as an example of
- 3:31soft power as well. Like how you carry yourself, how
- 3:35you present yourself. It matters in a lot of those
- 3:37respects. I honestly also think for me,
- 3:40like some of the way soft power comes through is when someone
- 3:43has been attached to a project or an initiative at work, or
- 3:49they're the person who like honestly a receptionist, usually
- 3:52carry a lot of soft power. I agree.
- 3:55With that, admins carry a ton of soft power and it's their
- 3:57proximity to some of the hard power.
- 4:00It's also their like knowledge base.
- 4:01It's also the fact that they are doing a lot for everyone else in
- 4:05the office. And so they're building up that
- 4:08like credibility and clout for other people.
- 4:10Again, if we go back to the example of like when we give
- 4:13foreign aid, we're building soft power as a country.
- 4:16When you know the receptionist is solving your problems, when
- 4:19IT is solving your problems, they're building soft power at
- 4:22the office. I completely agree.
- 4:25I love the point about admins. Like admins control so many
- 4:29things for people and like I'm always so grateful and
- 4:33appreciative of them And I think sometimes they are overlooked,
- 4:36but they definitely have a lot of soft power.
- 4:39And I think that the really like unspoken truth about the this is
- 4:43that soft power is often undervalued because it's not
- 4:46necessarily tangible. Like it's not on a spreadsheet,
- 4:48like it's not very specific necessarily, but it's a force
- 4:52behind a lot of real progress. And when you do it well, you can
- 4:55attract additional power or additional influence.
- 5:00So I wanted to get into a couple other examples of soft power
- 5:04and, and car. I want to hear your thoughts
- 5:05too. But yeah, I think emotional
- 5:08intelligence is a really strong one, right?
- 5:10Like if you show empathy and you understand like how people are
- 5:15interacting or how people are feeling, strong communication
- 5:19and charisma, those are really big.
- 5:21How you present yourself, we already kind of talked about,
- 5:24but even strategic relationships, so your network,
- 5:27your community, that's something that I really value in my role.
- 5:31And I feel like that is also a demonstration of soft power
- 5:34because I have this like group of people around me that I can
- 5:38tap into and I can elevate, and that gives me more influence as
- 5:42well. Yeah, this is sort of a call to
- 5:46volunteer for different things like you know, if you're if you
- 5:50have employee resource groups or special interest groups that
- 5:53you're already maybe aligned to, getting involved with them can
- 5:56build out your network and make you associated with those
- 5:59things. A lot of times I do think about
- 6:01it as like soft power being either the strategic
- 6:04relationships that you've built around you or the projects that
- 6:08you've done that then have sort of a shine around them or a
- 6:12reputation that other people want to then get involved.
- 6:15Like if you're doing charity walks at your office or things
- 6:17like that, that people are like, yeah, I want to actually, you
- 6:20know, be involved with that. Are you the person that brings
- 6:22in things? Are you the person that asks
- 6:24other people to lunch and expands your lunch group?
- 6:26All of that stuff just passes along good feelings and makes
- 6:29people feel good to to be with you and to help you out.
- 6:33I love that example, Cara, because I think it gets into
- 6:35like, how do you build soft power?
- 6:38I mean, I think one of the first things is really just to be
- 6:41authentic, like be yourself, right?
- 6:42Like don't try to pretend to be something else and like lean
- 6:45into your strengths. Another one is, like you said,
- 6:48getting involved collaboration. So working with people around
- 6:52you, extending the hand to someone on a cross functional
- 6:55team or someone you don't work with all the time is really
- 6:58important. Demonstrating your expertise can
- 7:02be soft power. You can be a subject matter
- 7:05expert. I'm thinking of our acronym
- 7:08episode is to an SNE. Like you can show that
- 7:12expertise. You can present yourself with
- 7:14confidence on specific topics. And I also think a big one here
- 7:18is culture. How can you be a culture
- 7:20ambassador for your organization?
- 7:22The culture is built by the people in the company.
- 7:25So if you're someone who can exude that culture and help kind
- 7:29of build it, that is also a sense of of soft power.
- 7:32And I don't know Carl, if you have any other examples.
- 7:34This conversation is reminding me of something I heard Eric
- 7:38Baker. He's he is someone who studied
- 7:40unions and has a book out called Make Your Own Job.
- 7:45And one of the things he talks about is like the power of
- 7:48unions comparative to just the power of management.
- 7:52And the big key thing that management can sort of never get
- 7:56people to do is cover for people or do part of their like larger
- 8:00part of their job outside of what their job is.
- 8:02But if you think of your Co workers, the ones that you're
- 8:04willing to like stay late, pick up their slack, like do a little
- 8:08bit more for them. Like that always sort of
- 8:10naturally happens in great workplaces where you're just
- 8:13happy to like fill in for folks. And so I think that's another
- 8:17example again, because you're the nice person, because you
- 8:20just asked how someone's day was, because you're the person
- 8:22that they're seeing all the time, you're there for them,
- 8:24they're there for you, then that's how you build some of
- 8:27that soft power. So sounds weird, but like
- 8:29running errands, doing favors, like asking people about their
- 8:32pets or kids or life outside of the office, Like all those
- 8:35little relationships that you're building are building sort of
- 8:38equity in someone else, sort of covering for you, helping you
- 8:42outgoing above and beyond when you're both on the same project
- 8:45or different projects, but they're kind of covering your
- 8:47shift. And just be kind, right, Like be
- 8:50a good person. I always come back to that.
- 8:52Be a good person and be kind like it gets you so so far, so,
- 8:58so to close out soft power is a still a skill.
- 9:00Excuse me, That can apply to almost every aspect of your
- 9:04life, and a lot of a lot of it has to do with showing up as
- 9:07your authentic self. So try to practice
- 9:10communication, be yourself, develop your confidence, and
- 9:14figure out ways that you can exude soft power in your life.
- 9:17And that's a wrap. Thanks for joining us on
