- 0:48Speaker 1: advice came from the office of Los Angeles Police Chief W.H.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Parker.
- 0:53Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 1:04Speaker 4: The story you are about to hear is true. The
- 1:07Speaker 4: names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Fatima Cigarettes. Best of all, king-size cigarettes brings you dragnet.
- 1:23Speaker 4: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned a narcotics detail. You
- 1:27Speaker 4: receive a call from a former suspect you arrested. He
- 1:30Speaker 4: wants to meet with you. He claims he has information
- 1:33Speaker 4: and contacts with a big narcotics ring.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Your job? Check it out.
- 1:38Speaker 5: Fatima.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Fatima.
- 1:44Speaker 4: America's first largest selling blended cigarette. Now king size.
- 1:49Speaker 3: See the difference.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Taste the difference.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Smoke the difference. And in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yes, you get all the advantages of extra length. Plus
- 1:59Speaker 4: Fatima quality, which no other king size cigarette has. Fatima
- 2:03Speaker 4: quality that gives you extra mildness. A much different, much
- 2:07Speaker 4: better flavor and aroma.
- 2:09Speaker 5: Definitely the best quality in its class. but the same
- 2:12Speaker 5: price as the cigarette you're now smoking.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So compare Fatima yourself today. When you see the difference,
- 2:19Speaker 4: taste the difference, smoke the difference, you'll switch to Fatima.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Because in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Ask your dealer for Fatima in the bright, sunny yellow pack.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Fatima, best of all king-size cigarettes.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 2:46Speaker 3: next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:50Speaker 3: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:52Speaker 3: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:56Speaker 3: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 3:00Speaker 3: the story of your police force in action.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It was Tuesday, August 9th. It was warm in Los Angeles.
- 3:09Speaker 6: We were working a special detail out of narcotics division.
- 3:12Speaker 6: My partner's Ed Jacobs. The boss is Captain Kearney. My
- 3:15Speaker 6: name's Friday. It was 7.28 p.m. when I got to
- 3:18Speaker 6: Lincoln Park, the west entrance.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yes, sir? Got a couple of bags of peanuts, please? Yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 2: sure thing. Ten a bag, that'll be 20 cents. All right,
- 3:30Speaker 2: thank you. Thank you. Hi, Friday. Jack. Would have come
- 3:40Speaker 2: over sooner.
- 3:40Speaker 7: I saw you walking around the park. Wanted to make
- 3:42Speaker 7: sure you weren't tailed. Yeah, I made sure of that
- 3:43Speaker 7: before I came in. Let's go over there and sit down.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 3:46Speaker 7: Say, there's a lot of stuff just came in town.
- 3:48Speaker 7: Some new pushers came with it.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Did you know that?
- 3:50Speaker 7: Yeah, I heard some talk. Like to knock them over?
- 3:53Speaker 7: I got the contact. What's in it for you, Jack?
- 3:55Speaker 7: A couple of reasons.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:57Speaker 7: Yeah. One thing I'd like to tell you back. I
- 4:00Speaker 7: got out of jail last week. I talked to the wife.
- 4:02Speaker 2: She told me what you've been doing for her and
- 4:03Speaker 2: the kids while I've been out. A nice family, Jack.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You let them down. You didn't.
- 4:07Speaker 7: I'm not going to forget it. Wife still has that
- 4:10Speaker 7: job you got her. The kids have them. It's a
- 4:11Speaker 7: lot better, too.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Appreciate you finding that place in Tahunga for them. It
- 4:15Speaker 2: sure helps. I'm glad to do it. Want some peanuts? Yeah, thanks. Now,
- 4:21Speaker 2: what about this narco ring you mentioned? Remember Snuffy Breen? Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Busted him the same time he did me. He got
- 4:26Speaker 2: a year. Yeah. Yeah. Just before I got out of
- 4:28Speaker 2: county last week, he told me to go see a
- 4:30Speaker 2: guy get me a job. What kind of a job?
- 4:33Speaker 7: Same kind you busted me on before. Pushing the stuff.
- 4:37Speaker 7: What's the guy's name?
- 4:38Speaker 2: Cadillac Red. Hmm? Yeah. New York, I think. Likes to
- 4:43Speaker 2: drive big cars. I guess that's how he got the name. Hmm?
- 4:46Speaker 2: What's the story on him? Red's been in town a month.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Four or five guys with him, all from the east.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Red says they got a big one to unload, six kilos. Paladin? Mm-hmm.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Mexican stuff. They seem to be having trouble. How do
- 4:57Speaker 2: you mean? Finding pushers, setting up a deal. The only
- 5:00Speaker 2: contact they had out here was Snuffy. He's in a can.
- 5:02Speaker 2: They're shouting around. I'll work him on peanut fat.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: You talked to this Red, did you? Mm-hmm. What's he
- 5:13Speaker 2: asking from you?
- 5:14Speaker 7: Like I said, he wants me to start pushing stuff
- 5:15Speaker 7: for him.
- 5:16Speaker 2: They need contacts bad. I let him hang. I didn't
- 5:19Speaker 2: say one way or the other he's going to pull
- 5:20Speaker 2: me tonight. And that's so? Well, you figure you'll tell him.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Depends on you, Friday. I know one thing.
- 5:26Speaker 7: I'm not going to start pushing the junk again. You
- 5:28Speaker 7: get around it, you handle it, you start to chippy
- 5:30Speaker 7: with it, before you know it, you hook yourself. You
- 5:32Speaker 7: figure what you want to do, I'll help all I can.
- 5:34Speaker 7: I owe you that much.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You pretty sure the gang needs contacts? Hungry for them.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Sitting on 20 ounces of junk. Can't find anyone to
- 5:41Speaker 2: trust to push it to. They got problems. Yeah. Think
- 5:46Speaker 2: you could give me an office to them? Pass me
- 5:47Speaker 2: off as a buyer? Friend of yours, maybe? Good chance.
- 5:50Speaker 2: How do you want to do it? Well, let him
- 5:53Speaker 2: know you have a friend who's ready for a buy.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Tell him I'm from up north. Make it Fresno. Red
- 5:58Speaker 2: Mountain neighborhood, is that all right? Okay, sounds good. This man,
- 6:02Speaker 2: Cadillac Red, he's going to phone you tonight, is that right? Mm-hmm.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I'll call you as soon as I hear from him.
- 6:08Speaker 2: All right, fine. Don't call me at the office. Here.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Here's my home phone. Don't worry about it. It's a
- 6:16Speaker 2: silent number. I can't trace it.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You call where? If I'm not in, leave the message
- 6:21Speaker 2: with my mother, okay? Your mother, okay. Pleasant 49321.
- 6:24Speaker 7: Okay, I'll ring you.
- 6:28Speaker 2: How much do you know about this Red? You impress
- 6:31Speaker 2: he's a big operator? Middle size, I guess.
- 6:34Speaker 7: He's out in New York, that's about all I know
- 6:35Speaker 7: for sure. Same for the rest of the gang. He's
- 6:38Speaker 7: supposed to be handling quality stuff real good.
- 6:40Speaker 2: How good? Red claims it tests out 40%. I don't
- 6:42Speaker 2: know what his asking price is. Where's this Red staying?
- 6:46Speaker 2: Did you find that out? No, he wouldn't tell me.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He was at a hotel on West 7th, but he
- 6:51Speaker 2: moved yesterday. Memphis guy doesn't settle long in one place.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Guess he's got a right to be shaky. All of
- 6:56Speaker 2: them have. How do you mean?
- 6:57Speaker 7: We got all that dough in the white stuff. Close
- 7:00Speaker 7: to 50 G's worth. Kill him if you knock him over.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Grab the junk.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We'll kill a lot more if we don't.
- 7:08Speaker 6: Before I left our informant, Jack Wallace, we set up
- 7:10Speaker 6: a plan for future contacts. In case of any emergency,
- 7:14Speaker 6: I would not attempt to get in touch with him
- 7:16Speaker 6: at his rooming.
- 7:16Speaker 2: House at 3rd and Olive Streets.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Instead, I'd contact him at his work, the Joe Adonis
- 7:21Speaker 6: Meat Market on West Temple, where he was employed as
- 7:23Speaker 6: a butcher. Wallace also promised to try to get me
- 7:26Speaker 6: a sample of the heroin from the narcotics ring. 10.50 p.m.,
- 7:31Speaker 6: I checked back in at the office and briefed Captain Kearney.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Sounds a little fantastic, Joe. Six kilos.
- 7:37Speaker 6: If it's true, it's a break a cop gets once
- 7:39Speaker 6: in a lifetime. Well, that's the way Wallace tells it.
- 7:41Speaker 6: I can't figure any reason why he'd lie to me.
- 7:42Speaker 6: How about this front man, Red? Did you check him
- 7:44Speaker 6: out yet?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Well, Ed's checking him through the moniker file now. He's
- 7:47Speaker 2: a New York operator. That's all Wallace could tell me.
- 7:49Speaker 2: You got any idea where the plant is? No, I don't.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Wallace didn't even know where Red was living. Red's supposed
- 7:54Speaker 2: to have a meet with him tonight. I gave him
- 7:55Speaker 2: my home phone, told him not to contact the office.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You got any court cases pending? No, but I got
- 8:00Speaker 2: two I was going to file on tomorrow.
- 8:01Speaker 7: You better give me the packages. I'll have Lou Walters
- 8:04Speaker 7: assign them to somebody else. You and Jacob stay with us, gang.
- 8:06Speaker 7: Put them to bed and get them up.
- 8:08Speaker 2: All right. Wallace is going to try to get you
- 8:10Speaker 2: a sample of the junk, huh? Yeah, he said he'd try. Captain? Joe? Hi. Hi, Ed.
- 8:15Speaker 2: You dig up anything? I don't know. Found one Cadillac red.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Could be our boy. You get a mug on him? No,
- 8:21Speaker 2: all we have is correspondence from New York. There was
- 8:23Speaker 2: a warrant on him back in 1945. Same thing, narcotics.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Later that year, the want was canceled.
- 8:28Speaker 4: He was picked up.
- 8:29Speaker 2: No disposition. You want us to radiogram New York for
- 8:32Speaker 2: a rundown on him? No, let's not stir it up.
- 8:34Speaker 7: Starting tomorrow, you two stay away from here. Get yourselves
- 8:37Speaker 7: fixed up in a hotel room downtown. Let me know
- 8:39Speaker 7: where you're staying.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Okay. Call me at 2 o'clock sharp in the afternoon.
- 8:43Speaker 2: I'll make it a point to be here. Better call
- 8:45Speaker 2: me on the inside line.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Right, Skipper.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Where do you think we ought to set up, Joe? Oh,
- 8:49Speaker 2: I don't know. How about Pop Sherman's place down there
- 8:52Speaker 2: on Hill Street? He'll cooperate. Okay. You know what that
- 8:55Speaker 2: stuff did to his boy. Yeah. Okay. You want to
- 8:58Speaker 2: check in tonight? No, my wife's going to scream her
- 9:00Speaker 2: head off as it is. You better make it in
- 9:01Speaker 2: the morning, huh? All right, we will. Narcotics, Kearney. Oh, yes, ma'am.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Just a minute. Bring you a gel. Okay, thank you.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Friday talking.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, Ma.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Did he say what time? Mm-hmm. Yeah, okay. Okay. No,
- 9:21Speaker 2: don't worry. I'll get a bike downtown and I'll be home. Yeah. Yeah, okay. Bye.
- 9:27Speaker 2: My mother, Wallace, just called my home, left a message
- 9:29Speaker 2: for me. Yeah? He had the meat with red. He's
- 9:31Speaker 2: got the sample.
- 9:37Speaker 6: At 7.30 the next morning, Ed Jacobs and I checked
- 9:39Speaker 6: in at Pop Sherman's hotel on South Hill Street and
- 9:42Speaker 6: took adjoining rooms. We'd left all possible identification in our
- 9:45Speaker 6: lockers at the office. At 9.30 a.m., technicians from our
- 9:49Speaker 6: crime lab arrived and installed a bug in my room
- 9:52Speaker 6: and set up the receiver next door in Ed's room.
- 9:55Speaker 6: In the event any of the gang happened to come
- 9:57Speaker 6: to my room, they'd be able to record the conversation.
- 10:00Speaker 6: I registered as Paul Lindsey, San Diego, California. Ed registered
- 10:04Speaker 6: as Ray Morrissey, Sacramento.
- 10:07Speaker 2: At 11 a.m., I went alone to.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Adonis Meat Market where our informant, Jack Wallace, handed me
- 10:12Speaker 6: a dummy package which I took back to the hotel.
- 10:15Speaker 6: Inside the package, I found a sample of the narcotics
- 10:18Speaker 6: along with a note from Wallace. He wrote that he'd
- 10:20Speaker 6: arranged a meet with Red for that night. I was
- 10:24Speaker 6: to pick up Wallace in front of the subway terminal building,
- 10:26Speaker 6: the Dill Street side, at 9.30 p.m. I gave the
- 10:30Speaker 6: sample of heroin to Ed, who took it to the
- 10:32Speaker 6: crime lab, where Sergeant Jay Allen ran a test on it.
- 10:36Speaker 6: The sample tested out within 40%. For the drug market,
- 10:40Speaker 6: it's considered good quality. At 9.20 that night, I left
- 10:44Speaker 6: the hotel and walked five blocks north to the Hill
- 10:46Speaker 6: Street entrance of the subway terminal building. Wallace was there
- 10:50Speaker 6: waiting for me. He said we were to meet Red
- 10:52Speaker 6: at a hotel on West 54th Street. 9.47 p.m. We
- 10:57Speaker 6: got to the hotel, went to a room on the
- 11:00Speaker 6: second floor. This one here.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah? Yeah, who's that? It's Jack.
- 11:14Speaker 7: Good morning.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Red, this is my friend I was telling you about. Yeah?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Paul Lindsey. Paul, this is Red. Hi. Yeah, I hear
- 11:23Speaker 2: you got some H to unload, huh? Hmm? What are
- 11:27Speaker 2: you talking about? What is this, Jack? You giving me
- 11:29Speaker 2: a bum steer here? Relax, huh? It's all right. He's solid, Red.
- 11:33Speaker 2: You can talk. No, he talks too fast and too much.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'm here to do business. If you're ready, I am.
- 11:37Speaker 2: If you're not, say so. I haven't got the time
- 11:39Speaker 2: to play cozy with you. No, no, take it easy
- 11:41Speaker 2: with me. Get along a lot better. What do you want?
- 11:43Speaker 2: Jack vouched for me. Isn't that enough for you?
- 11:44Speaker 7: The guy who vouched for Jack's in the county jail.
- 11:46Speaker 7: We haven't been able to talk to him. We've already
- 11:49Speaker 7: done business before.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Well, I could ask you the same thing. Now, look, mister,
- 11:52Speaker 6: we got one thing in common here. You got something
- 11:54Speaker 6: to sell, maybe I want to buy it. If we
- 11:56Speaker 6: can't get together, let's forget the whole thing right now.
- 11:58Speaker 6: You're not the only butcher in town. There's a chair
- 12:01Speaker 6: over there. Why don't you sit down? I'll fix a
- 12:02Speaker 6: couple of drinks. Jack can fix them. Let's find out
- 12:05Speaker 6: if you and I can get together.
- 12:06Speaker 2: All right. Same, Paul? Bourbon and water? Yeah. Well, how
- 12:15Speaker 2: about it? How much you got to sell? Easy, huh?
- 12:17Speaker 2: There's no rush. Talk better over a couple of drinks. Well,
- 12:20Speaker 2: maybe you got the time, mister. I haven't. How much
- 12:22Speaker 2: can you furnish me with? One you can buy from
- 12:25Speaker 2: the looks of it. Hey, Red, you got any lemons? Uh, no.
- 12:28Speaker 2: No lemon twist in it, Paul. That all right? Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 2: that's all right. Make it light, will you? Now, this
- 12:32Speaker 2: junk you got, what's it test?
- 12:33Speaker 7: It's the best this town's seen in a long time.
- 12:35Speaker 7: It's 50% or better.
- 12:37Speaker 6: Well, who you trying to con? My tester used your
- 12:39Speaker 6: sample this afternoon. He says it won't go 40%.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Okay. You know where you can get better? Paul, here
- 12:46Speaker 2: you are. Bread. Thank you. How about it, Lindsey? Do
- 12:52Speaker 2: we do business? Maybe. Oh, who's playing cozy now?
- 12:56Speaker 6: Well, if I do go, it won't be for standard price.
- 12:58Speaker 6: Your junk isn't worth it.
- 12:59Speaker 7: It's 40%. I don't care what your tester says. An
- 13:02Speaker 7: ounce will cost you 400.
- 13:03Speaker 2: No, not to me it won't. I'm not paying out
- 13:05Speaker 2: good money for milk sugar. I want a big buy
- 13:07Speaker 2: and I want quality, but not at 400 an ounce.
- 13:10Speaker 7: Maybe we can work something out. Why get excited?
- 13:12Speaker 6: Because I don't like chicken operators. I don't like stalling around. Now,
- 13:14Speaker 6: if you've got an offer, let's make it.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Price is going to depend on a lot of things.
- 13:17Speaker 2: How much merchandise are you going to want? 20 ounces.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I've got customers up north. I have to have it
- 13:21Speaker 2: for them the 15th of the month. Up north where?
- 13:23Speaker 2: San Francisco, Sacramento. That's funny. We checked on them. Yeah? Yeah,
- 13:28Speaker 2: the hotel you're at. You're registered for San Diego. Yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 2: good address. I've never been there. I heard some talk
- 13:34Speaker 2: about you. You ever work for Fresno? Maybe. I take
- 13:36Speaker 2: customers where I find them. 20 ounces, huh? At the minimum?
- 13:41Speaker 2: For your stuff, yeah. Now, what's the price?
- 13:43Speaker 7: I think we might get together. It's a pretty good buy.
- 13:45Speaker 7: Might work out a discount on it.
- 13:46Speaker 2: How much? Three and a quarter an ounce. I figure
- 13:50Speaker 2: that's reasonable. Maybe you do. I don't. $ 2. 75. I can't
- 13:53Speaker 2: go better. If I didn't need this stuff right now,
- 13:55Speaker 2: I wouldn't offer that. Split the difference. 20 ounces, 300
- 13:57Speaker 2: an ounce. You can't do better than you know it. No,
- 14:01Speaker 2: how about it? 300 knots? I'm not lining up for
- 14:03Speaker 2: a soft touch. I want another sample when I move on.
- 14:05Speaker 2: You'll get it. Now, what do you say?
- 14:08Speaker 7: All right, you got a deal. 20 ounces. When do
- 14:10Speaker 7: I get this stuff? We'll get in touch with you tomorrow.
- 14:13Speaker 7: Through Jack here.
- 14:14Speaker 2: 6,000. You sure you got the money? I got it. Now,
- 14:17Speaker 2: what's the setup? Tomorrow, you'll get the word. All right.
- 14:22Speaker 2: If I don't hear by 4 p.m., I'll know you're
- 14:23Speaker 2: gone hinky. I'll look up somebody else. You'll hear. How
- 14:26Speaker 2: about it, Jack? You ready to go? Yeah, okay. See
- 14:28Speaker 2: you later, Red. Jack? Yeah? You got a wife and
- 14:33Speaker 2: a couple of kids.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 14:35Speaker 2: That's right. How are they, Jack? Okay, fine. Why? Nothing.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I'll talk to you later, Jack. 10.40 p.m.
- 14:49Speaker 6: The informant, Jack Wallace, and I took a cab back
- 14:51Speaker 6: downtown and I dropped him off. I got to a
- 14:54Speaker 6: pay telephone, called Captain Kearney and my partner.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Ed Jacobs, and we set up a meeting. 11.20 p.m.
- 14:59Speaker 6: The three of us met on a side street out
- 15:02Speaker 6: on the North Wilshire District, and I briefed them on
- 15:04Speaker 6: what had happened. In order to prevent any possible harm
- 15:07Speaker 6: to either Wallace or his family, the captain told me
- 15:10Speaker 6: he'd have them placed under 24-hour surveillance. His children would
- 15:14Speaker 6: be kept under observation going and coming from school. The
- 15:17Speaker 6: next morning, I stayed close to my hotel room waiting
- 15:20Speaker 6: for a contact from either.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Red or another member of the gang. 1.05 p.m. Hello. Hello. Lindsay,
- 15:29Speaker 2: this is Red. Yeah. That talk we had last night,
- 15:32Speaker 2: you still interested? Well, yeah, aren't you? Well, be out
- 15:35Speaker 2: on Mission Road, 1130 tonight. The way's the end of
- 15:37Speaker 2: the park out there. You'll get your sample. Mission Road.
- 15:39Speaker 2: All right. You gonna be there? Yeah. Well, how I
- 15:41Speaker 2: know your man, he might make a mistake. He won't
- 15:44Speaker 2: make a mistake. He knows you.
- 15:49Speaker 6: I hung up the phone and checked with Ed Jacobs
- 15:51Speaker 6: next door to see if he'd picked up the conversation
- 15:53Speaker 6: on his receiver.
- 15:54Speaker 2: He told me he'd.
- 15:55Speaker 6: Notify Captain Kearney of the plan for that night and.
- 15:57Speaker 2: That the captain would be in the office if I
- 15:59Speaker 2: wanted to contact him on the inside line.
- 16:02Speaker 6: As soon as I picked up the sample of heroin,
- 16:04Speaker 6: I was to return to my hotel room and Ed
- 16:06Speaker 6: would immediately take it back to the crime lab for analysis. 1.30 p.m.
- 16:11Speaker 6: I left the hotel, went downtown to a pay phone,
- 16:14Speaker 6: called home, and talked.
- 16:15Speaker 2: To my mother. She said there hadn't been any phone calls.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I walked around for a couple of hours.
- 16:20Speaker 6: Went to a late afternoon show, and then I went
- 16:22Speaker 6: over to Frank Tang's place for dinner.
- 16:24Speaker 2: 11.15 p.m.
- 16:27Speaker 6: I caught a yellow streetcar going north on Main Street
- 16:29Speaker 6: and rode to the end of the line.
- 16:31Speaker 2: On Mission Road.
- 16:32Speaker 6: It was about 300 yards from there to the designated
- 16:34Speaker 6: meeting place, the west end of the park.
- 16:37Speaker 2: The place was dark, completely deserted. 11.25 p.m. 11.30. Lindsay? Yeah.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Package you want? Eucalyptus tree back there in the middle
- 16:58Speaker 2: of the park. Where? Straight back there. You can't miss it.
- 17:01Speaker 2: You'll find the package under a rock at the bottom
- 17:03Speaker 2: of the tree. See you later. I started to cross
- 17:11Speaker 2: the park.
- 17:11Speaker 6: The eucalyptus tree pointed out was about 200 feet from
- 17:14Speaker 6: the edge of the road.
- 17:16Speaker 2: There was a narrow path hemmed with shrubbery leading up
- 17:18Speaker 2: to the base of the tree. There was a large
- 17:20Speaker 2: rock beside it.
- 17:21Speaker 6: I bent down and looked under the rock. There was
- 17:23Speaker 6: nothing there. I started to turn, but it was too late.
- 17:27Speaker 6: All right, wise guy.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Give me the boot, Stan. Give it to him. Shake
- 17:38Speaker 2: his pockets, Stan. No identification on him. He's clean. Let's go.
- 17:44Speaker 2: He's got his sample.
- 17:56Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet, authentic stories of your police
- 18:00Speaker 3: force in action.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Fatima, America's first largest selling blended cigarette. Now, king size.
- 18:07Speaker 4: See the difference.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Taste the difference. Smoke the difference. And in Fatima, the
- 18:13Speaker 3: difference is quality.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Yes, you get all the advantages of extra length, plus
- 18:17Speaker 4: Fatima quality, which no other king size cigarette has.
- 18:21Speaker 3: You see, Fatima contains the finest domestic and Turkish tobaccos,
- 18:26Speaker 3: superbly blended.
- 18:27Speaker 4: And Fatima is extra mild, with a much different, much
- 18:30Speaker 4: better flavor and aroma.
- 18:32Speaker 5: Fatima, definitely the best quality in its class. but the
- 18:36Speaker 5: same price as the cigarette you are now smoking.
- 18:38Speaker 3: No wonder more smokers now insist on king-size Fatima than
- 18:42Speaker 3: ever before.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Friends, try Fatima. Buy several packs. Compare them. We're convinced
- 18:48Speaker 4: you'll start the new year with Fatima. Yes, when you
- 18:52Speaker 4: see the difference, taste the difference, smoke the difference, you'll
- 18:57Speaker 4: switch to Fatima. Because in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Buy Fatima. Best of all, king-size cigarettes.
- 19:15Speaker 6: When I came to, it was a few minutes past midnight.
- 19:17Speaker 6: The bruises on my face and head were beginning to swell.
- 19:20Speaker 6: I felt dazed, sick to my stomach. I made my
- 19:23Speaker 6: way out of the park and down the road to
- 19:25Speaker 6: a public phone booth where I called my partner, Ed Jacobs.
- 19:28Speaker 6: He came out right away and drove me back to
- 19:30Speaker 6: the hotel. Ed put in a call to Captain Kearney,
- 19:33Speaker 6: and he made arrangements to have a doctor sent over
- 19:35Speaker 6: to examine me. He treated me for numerous cuts and
- 19:38Speaker 6: bruises about the face and head and the upper part
- 19:40Speaker 6: of the body.
- 19:40Speaker 2: There were no serious injuries.
- 19:43Speaker 6: At ten minutes past one, Captain Kearney called back and
- 19:45Speaker 6: wanted to know if Ed and I could meet him
- 19:47Speaker 6: at his home. He didn't want to take the chance
- 19:49Speaker 6: of being seen. around our hotel.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Ed and I drove out to his house in the
- 19:53Speaker 2: Silver Lake District. Come on in. Sit down.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, Skipper.
- 19:58Speaker 2: How do you feel, Joe? My side hurts a little. Fair,
- 20:02Speaker 2: I guess. Yeah, they really gave you a working over.
- 20:05Speaker 2: You recognize any of them? Yeah, one guy. I don't
- 20:08Speaker 2: know his name, though. What do you think, Skipper?
- 20:09Speaker 4: Round up the whole bunch of them?
- 20:11Speaker 2: No, that's not going to help any. Suppose we pick
- 20:13Speaker 2: them up now. What do we got on them? A misdemeanor?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Battery?
- 20:15Speaker 2: 30 days in jail, they're out again. We're right back
- 20:18Speaker 2: where we started. What do you figure's wrong, Joe? Think
- 20:20Speaker 2: they got hinky? I don't know. I can't figure.
- 20:22Speaker 7: I think you better take a couple of days off.
- 20:24Speaker 7: Go home and rest up. Let some of those bruises heal.
- 20:27Speaker 7: The whole thing could be blown by that time. The
- 20:29Speaker 7: deal will be cold. If we're going to make it pay,
- 20:31Speaker 7: I've got.
- 20:31Speaker 2: To stay on it. How do you know they haven't
- 20:33Speaker 2: made you for a cop? The deal might be cold
- 20:34Speaker 2: right now. Yeah, that's possible. What other reason was there
- 20:37Speaker 2: for tamping you?
- 20:38Speaker 7: How about your friend Jack Wallace? He might have a
- 20:40Speaker 7: straight story.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Ask him about it. No, I'll do better. I'll ask Red.
- 20:45Speaker 6: Captain Kearney finally agreed to go on with the plan
- 20:48Speaker 6: with the understanding that Ed Jacobs and another man from
- 20:50Speaker 6: our office would have me under surveillance at all times.
- 20:53Speaker 6: It was understood that I'd go back to Red's hotel
- 20:55Speaker 6: room to see if I could pick up the loose ends.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Jacobs and another officer would follow me to the hotel
- 21:01Speaker 6: and remain within calling distance.
- 21:02Speaker 2: 2.10 a.m.
- 21:04Speaker 6: I got to the hotel on West 5th Street and
- 21:06Speaker 6: went up to the second floor to Red's room.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah, who's there? Lindsey. How you doing, Lindsey? Lindsey, quick!
- 21:30Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Lindsay.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Wait a minute.
- 21:32Speaker 2: What's this all about? You want to know? You set
- 21:33Speaker 2: your hoods on me. Look at my face. I don't
- 21:35Speaker 2: know what you're talking about. I went back to pick
- 21:37Speaker 2: up the sample. This is what happens. How big do
- 21:38Speaker 2: you punks think he are?
- 21:39Speaker 4: All right, Stan.
- 21:40Speaker 2: What happened out there? Not much. You said he was
- 21:42Speaker 2: acting smart. We thought he'd cool him off a little.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I told you to keep an eye on him. That's all.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Not to rough him up. No, he's a crab, baby.
- 21:47Speaker 2: We hardly touched him. Oh, shut up.
- 21:49Speaker 7: Every time you get on that eight, you get muscle happy.
- 21:51Speaker 7: I've warned you before, Stan. Now, this is the last time.
- 21:54Speaker 7: You better quit chipping with that junk. You cause any
- 21:56Speaker 7: more trouble like this and you're out.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Understand? He's a crybaby, Red. We didn't hurt him. I've
- 22:00Speaker 2: heard enough from you. Now go on. Take a walk. Okay.
- 22:02Speaker 2: If you see Max, tell him I want him. Yeah,
- 22:04Speaker 2: all right. Sorry, Lindsey. These things happen sometimes. Can't be helped.
- 22:10Speaker 6: Why do you keep punks like that around? I thought
- 22:11Speaker 6: you were too smart to connect with users. They could
- 22:13Speaker 6: get both of us in trouble.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Oh, they'll be all right. Relax.
- 22:15Speaker 7: Every once in a while I get geed up. I
- 22:16Speaker 7: have to straighten them out. I wouldn't trust them with
- 22:18Speaker 7: my laundry. They're all right for what I use them for.
- 22:20Speaker 7: The good errand boys. I get you a drink?
- 22:22Speaker 2: No. All right, what about the stuff? You ready to
- 22:25Speaker 2: move on the deal? I've been ready. I told you
- 22:26Speaker 2: I needed the step of the 15th. How about tomorrow night?
- 22:29Speaker 7: What's the matter with right now? Now, now, you know
- 22:30Speaker 7: better than that. I don't keep the plan around here.
- 22:32Speaker 7: I'll call you at 8 o'clock tomorrow night.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I still haven't got the sample. You don't need one.
- 22:35Speaker 7: It's as good as the first one you got. Come on,
- 22:38Speaker 7: what are you stalling for? I'm getting tired of this
- 22:39Speaker 7: sample yak. If you don't want to buy, say so.
- 22:42Speaker 2: You'll bring it to my hotel tomorrow night?
- 22:43Speaker 7: No, I'll call you. I'll tell you where you can
- 22:45Speaker 7: pick it up. 20 ounces, 300 an ounce, right? Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 7: no phony stuff. You keep your hands on the table,
- 22:50Speaker 7: so will I. You deliver the merchandise, I'll pay the money.
- 22:52Speaker 2: What are you worrying about? I trust you. Why can't
- 22:54Speaker 2: you trust me? Sure I did. Look at my face. 3.05 a.m.
- 23:00Speaker 6: I left Red and went back downtown to my hotel room.
- 23:03Speaker 6: A few minutes after I got in, I heard Ed
- 23:05Speaker 6: Jacobs and Lieutenant Lou Walters enter the adjoining room. I
- 23:08Speaker 6: checked the hallway first, and then I went next door
- 23:10Speaker 6: and briefed him on what had happened with Red.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I told him I'd let Ed know about the time
- 23:15Speaker 2: and the place of the meet as soon as I heard.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Walters said he'd keep enough.
- 23:18Speaker 6: Men ready at the office to cover the area on
- 23:20Speaker 6: short notice. I went back to my room, took a shower,
- 23:23Speaker 6: and got some sleep. At 8 o'clock that night, I
- 23:26Speaker 6: was in my room standing by the phone.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I waited. No call.
- 23:31Speaker 6: 8.30, 9 o'clock, 9.15, still no word.
- 23:35Speaker 2: 9.25 p.m. Hello? Lindsay, this is Red. Sorry I'm late.
- 23:41Speaker 2: I couldn't get to the plan. What's the pitch? It's
- 23:43Speaker 2: all set. Norwich Grill, West 7th Street. When? 10.30, shot.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Before he hung up, Red told me to meet one
- 23:53Speaker 6: of his pushers in the last booth at the back
- 23:55Speaker 6: end of the grill.
- 23:55Speaker 2: He said I'd recognize him.
- 23:57Speaker 6: The man would have a package of heroin wrapped in newspapers.
- 24:00Speaker 6: I was to hand him $ 6, 000, and he would give
- 24:03Speaker 6: me the package. I immediately contacted Ed in the room
- 24:06Speaker 6: next door, and he notified the office. At 10.15 p.m.,
- 24:11Speaker 6: I left the hotel with a dummy package of money
- 24:13Speaker 6: containing six marked bills. 10.28 p.m. I got to the
- 24:17Speaker 6: Norwich Grill on West 7th Street.
- 24:19Speaker 2: It was almost empty.
- 24:20Speaker 6: I went to the rear booth where I found one
- 24:22Speaker 6: of Red's pushers, Stan, drinking coffee.
- 24:29Speaker 2: Right on the dot. Sit down, Lindsey. Yeah. Well, let's
- 24:33Speaker 2: not camp on this thing. You got the money? I
- 24:35Speaker 2: done business with you before. Where's the stuff? Didn't Red
- 24:37Speaker 2: tell you where to be?
- 24:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Wrapped up in that newspaper. He told me there'd be
- 24:41Speaker 2: some stuff under a rock one time. It wasn't there.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I want to look. What's the matter? Don't you trust me?
- 24:45Speaker 2: You think I got a reason to? All right. Have
- 24:48Speaker 2: a look. Here. You satisfied? No. Open it. All right.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It's all there. I saw it made up. Enough for you? Yeah. Okay.
- 25:03Speaker 2: You just made a deal. Yeah, what do you have? Coffee, black,
- 25:08Speaker 2: piece of apple pie. All right. You? Coffee. All right. Okay,
- 25:13Speaker 2: stuff's there. Now, how about the loot? I got it.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Let's have it. Six Gs. Red wants me back in
- 25:18Speaker 2: a hurry. Well, relax. We'll have some coffee. This is
- 25:20Speaker 2: a big deal. Money. Now, how about it? All right.
- 25:26Speaker 2: There you go. What's the matter with you? What are
- 25:30Speaker 2: you shaking about? Nothing. I'm a little nervous. Red wouldn't
- 25:33Speaker 2: let me have a fix before I left. I'm getting
- 25:35Speaker 2: a little sick.
- 25:35Speaker 7: I'm going to have a look here.
- 25:39Speaker 2: What are you doing? Red told me to tell you
- 25:41Speaker 2: not to open it until you got it back to him.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Who are you kidding, mister? All right, you go ahead
- 25:44Speaker 2: and open it up. You'll have to answer for it,
- 25:46Speaker 2: not me. Sure.
- 25:47Speaker 7: Hey, what's the deal? Only a few bills in here.
- 25:52Speaker 7: The rest of it's paper. Are you trying to beat us?
- 25:54Speaker 7: It's already done. You won't get away with this. We'll
- 25:56Speaker 7: fix you while Max is outside. Friday, we saw him
- 25:59Speaker 7: take the envelope. You get the stuff?
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, right here. We're waiting outside, Joe. We got him.
- 26:03Speaker 2: They're taking him in now. Cops. Lousy cops. Wait till
- 26:06Speaker 2: Red hears about this. He will. Head.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I'll get him.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Okay, let's go. Come on, fella. Move.
- 26:13Speaker 7: What are you grabbing me for? I deliver the stuff.
- 26:16Speaker 2: That's all.
- 26:16Speaker 7: These big deals aren't mine. I'm small time. Fixed once
- 26:20Speaker 7: in a while, that's all I want. Just little fixes,
- 26:22Speaker 7: the biggest deal I ever made.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. It's the truth. Now, what about Red?
- 26:25Speaker 7: He's got a lot of that stuff left. This guy's
- 26:27Speaker 7: above him. Big dealers. Why don't you get them?
- 26:29Speaker 2: We'll get them. You can never guess who the other
- 26:31Speaker 2: two are. They're real high powers. Big deals. Nothing but
- 26:33Speaker 2: big deals. You won't bust them a hundred years. Yeah,
- 26:36Speaker 2: let's go. Get my coat, will you, Ed, please? Yeah, okay. Hey,
- 26:41Speaker 2: forgot your check. Who's gonna pay for the coffee? Here
- 26:44Speaker 2: you go. Oh, this one. Me? Yeah, you just made
- 26:47Speaker 2: a big deal.
- 26:56Speaker 4: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:59Speaker 4: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 27:01Speaker 3: On August 13th, a booking was made at the Los
- 27:04Speaker 3: Angeles Police Department, Watts Substation, City and County of Los Angeles,
- 27:07Speaker 3: State of California.
- 27:09Speaker 2: In a moment, the results of that booking.
- 27:11Speaker 4: And now here is our star, Jack Webb.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Thank you, George Fenneman.
- 27:15Speaker 6: Friends, last year we were honored with thousands of letters
- 27:18Speaker 6: from listeners all over the country. Letters telling us that
- 27:21Speaker 6: you've bought Fatimas and you find them the best of
- 27:24Speaker 6: all King Sai cigarettes. Well, thanks to you and the
- 27:27Speaker 6: many thousands of other smokers who have.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Switched to Fatima.
- 27:31Speaker 6: Now, if you haven't tried Fatimas yet, make this your
- 27:33Speaker 6: cue for the new year.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Next time, get yourself a pack of Fatimas. Compare them.
- 27:39Speaker 2: See the difference. Taste the difference. Smoke the difference.
- 27:42Speaker 6: And when you do, I'm convinced that you'll switch to Fatima.
- 27:45Speaker 6: Because believe me, in Fatima, the difference is quality.
- 27:58Speaker 3: The two suspects, Stanley Parrish and Max Higbee, were booked
- 28:01Speaker 3: at the Watts substation on suspicion, the narcotic act, felony.
- 28:06Speaker 3: After a meeting in the district attorney's office, they expressed
- 28:08Speaker 3: their desire to assist the police in the apprehension of
- 28:10Speaker 3: the outstanding members of the gang. They were filed on,
- 28:13Speaker 3: and before a magistrate in municipal court, they waived their
- 28:16Speaker 3: right to a preliminary hearing to conceal.
- 28:18Speaker 2: The fact of their arrest.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Next week, The Big Red, Part 2. Ladies and gentlemen...
- 28:27Speaker 4: To build our strength against aggression, we must equip our
- 28:30Speaker 4: armed forces with the weapons of war. At the same time,
- 28:33Speaker 4: we must produce adequate supplies of civilian goods in order
- 28:37Speaker 4: to keep prices down and defeat inflation. We can meet
- 28:40Speaker 4: this double challenge by raising our productivity, by turning out
- 28:44Speaker 4: more goods and services for every hour we work, and
- 28:47Speaker 4: by refusing to let up until our nation is secure. Remember,
- 28:52Speaker 4: the better we produce, the stronger we grow.
- 29:06Speaker 3: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 29:09Speaker 3: from official files. Technical advice comes from the office of
- 29:13Speaker 3: Chief of Police W.H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department. Heard
- 29:17Speaker 3: tonight were Barney Phillips and Stacey Harris. Script by Jim Moser.
