- 0:03- Hello and welcome to the Pop Culture Junkie podcast.
- 0:07I'm Olivia, ready to chat with my fellow junkie.
- 0:10- Sauna, and the occasional cat.
- 0:13- You might be mowing in the background.
- 0:16- You may mow.
- 0:17- I don't know about you, but there are periods of times
- 0:21where the MiaoMex commercial really invades my spirit.
- 0:26And this week is one of those.
- 0:28I've been mowing a lot.
- 0:30Musical popular songs in the form of Miao.
- 0:35- To the point that my co-workers are like,
- 0:37she's Miao and again, she's Miao.
- 0:39- She's Miao.
- 0:40- If she comes, she's Miao.
- 0:42- That's just what the inside of my brain looks like right now.
- 0:46It's just Meow Central.
- 0:48- I feel like a good portion of my marriage is Andrew

- 0:53Just, you added some extra Miao's in.
- 0:57So we got five cats going.
- 0:59And then we get really deep with it.
- 1:01And we're like, you just don't understand MeowMeow, do you?
- 1:03Like, I'm sorry, did you just not MeowMeow back

- 1:13But we do. - They don't.
- 1:14We do. - We got it.
- 1:16The spirit of MeowMeow has entered your marriage.
- 1:18Your marital bed. (laughs)
- 1:23- How are you, my marital bed?
- 1:24- We don't say it in there.
- 1:26- Well, we probably have not during the marital act.
- 1:29- Cause spice things up could get, you know,
- 1:33real exciting.
- 1:34- I love the first 10 minutes of our episode
- 1:36are just gonna be talking about the inappropriate places
- 1:39and when the correct timing is to MeowMeow at your partner.
- 1:42- Yeah, yeah, I think it's always correct, you know?
- 1:46- It's always correct.
- 1:48- MeowMeow, anyway. (laughs)
- 1:53- Any who's us.
- 1:54- What are you gonna do? - Oh God, what have I been up to?
- 1:58- I posted something on Instagram today.
- 2:00You know those cute little, like,
- 2:01you're April so far and then you choose like six pictures
- 2:05and I tried to do it and all of my pictures were just like,
- 2:09of cats.
- 2:10I made some devil eggs.
- 2:13- Ooh.
- 2:15- That was about it.
- 2:17Like, it's been a very just kind of like chill.
- 2:20- Nothingness.
- 2:21- You made devil eggs outside of Easter.
- 2:25- Oh no, I made them on Easter.
- 2:26Yeah, I have made them outside of Easter before.
- 2:29Cause I remember that, like,
- 2:30do you ever remember that you're an adult with free will
- 2:32sometimes?
- 2:33Like, and you can just not enough.
- 2:36- Yeah.
- 2:37Like, you could just make devil eggs.
- 2:39Like, sometimes I'll just ultimately make egg.
- 2:42- Yeah, and I'm like, I just wanna eat some devil eggs
- 2:45and so I just made some and they were great.
- 2:48Like, I did that with chocolate chip cookies last week.
- 2:50I was like, we could really go for a cookie
- 2:51and I was like, I have the ingredients and the intelligence
- 2:56to make myself cookies.
- 2:57So I'm gonna do it.
- 2:58- That's beautiful.
- 3:00I should do that because I did not make devil eggs
- 3:04for Easter as I think we talked about last time.
- 3:06You know what, you've inspired me.
- 3:08I think I'm gonna make some devil eggs.
- 3:11- You need to.
- 3:11You're the egg queen.
- 3:12- Just Jesus would have won at it.
- 3:14- I need to look more.
- 3:18I'm sure it has pagan history as most Christian holidays do,
- 3:23but I don't know why we have bunnies and eggs on Easter.
- 3:27Like, there's like a giant anthropomorphic rabbit
- 3:30that shows up and steals your eggs or leaves you eggs.
- 3:33Lays eggs?
- 3:34- Leaves you eggs.
- 3:37- The Easter Bunny leaves you eggs.
- 3:38- Leaves eggs?
- 3:40- Yeah, the Easter Bunny lays the eggs, right?
- 3:42He lays the eggs.
- 3:43That's what the Easter Bunny is.
- 3:44- No, do you think real life bunnies?
- 3:46- No, I know real bunnies.
- 3:47- No, no, no.
- 3:48(laughing)
- 3:50- But the Easter Bunny transcends real bunny mechanics.
- 3:58- Okay.
- 3:59- He's like six feet tall.
- 4:00- Yeah, total.
- 4:01- He lays eggs in your house in the middle of the night.
- 4:03- That's for Jesus.
- 4:05- No notes.
- 4:07- You know, for Jesus, for Jesus.
- 4:08I think we talked about devil eggs last time.
- 4:11So things are going well, guys.
- 4:13- We're in trouble when we don't like it.
- 4:14- Twice in one episode.
- 4:16- We have to be out as we listen.
- 4:19- Democracy is in a downfall.
- 4:24Both of us are mentally ill.
- 4:26We have cats and eggs to keep us afloat.
- 4:29(laughing)
- 4:30- Antigues, antsigues.
- 4:33- Antigues, antsigues, antsigues, that's true.
- 4:35- I went and saw the format again since we last recorded.
- 4:41And it was beautiful.
- 4:43I went to the Castro Theater, which just reopened
- 4:47in San Francisco.
- 4:48It's like iconic.
- 4:49It's beautiful.
- 4:50- No.
- 4:51- I was trying to describe it to Blake.
- 4:54Like what it looked like on the inside.
- 4:56I was like, it's really pretty.
- 4:57Like, imagine Lincoln getting shot.
- 5:00(laughing)
- 5:03- I imagine that all the time.
- 5:05When I'm thinking about cats and eggs,
- 5:08it's president Lincoln.
- 5:09- You think about Lincoln.
- 5:10- Assassination, yes.
- 5:11- I think about, yeah, totally.
- 5:13But it was a gorgeous theater.
- 5:15We saw the format, which was a Phoenix band that broke up
- 5:20and got back together.
- 5:22They had their reunion show in October in Phoenix.
- 5:26I actually got to go to that.
- 5:28And then I was just scrolling on Instagram as one does.
- 5:31And I saw that they were like at the Castro Theater
- 5:34for like 40 bucks.
- 5:35And I was like, oh my gosh.
- 5:36- That's amazing.
- 5:37- I mean, to say that it wasn't sold out.
- 5:38I feel like the format always sells out so fast.
- 5:41It was sold out on the theater website,
- 5:44but Brie Sell was like 40 bucks.
- 5:45And I was like, nice.
- 5:47- Amazing.
- 5:48I tried to do that.
- 5:49Okay, so Sam Smith opened the Castro Theater.
- 5:52He did a residency here for like,
- 5:54almost two months at the Castro Theater.
- 5:58I was trying to get tickets for that.
- 6:00And it was like $300 for them.
- 6:04And I was, I'm not gonna do that.
- 6:05But I missed Kim Petrus coming out with him.
- 6:09And also partying in the Castro.
- 6:12So I really missed my chance there.
- 6:13But I want to see Kim Petrus again
- 6:15because I don't remember anything from when we saw her
- 6:19'cause I was so drunk.
- 6:21Oh my God.
- 6:22- It was, okay, Kim Petrus is amazing.
- 6:26I don't remember I playing about that.
- 6:28- I don't remember I playing about this thing for like eight months.
- 6:31And as her and I would typically do,
- 6:34we're taking tequila shots in my apartment
- 6:36with pickle juice, amazing combo,
- 6:39it can't taste a thing, quite dangerous
- 6:41because you cannot taste a thing.
- 6:43- Yeah, I get black out.
- 6:45- I buy us two drinks and Shawna immediately smacks
- 6:50my bowl tall boy out of my hand and hers.
- 6:54And I'm wearing like this long skirt and somehow
- 6:57it hits the ground and shoots up.
- 7:01And it hits the ground under my skirt.
- 7:03So I just had like a phone.
- 7:05So she buffs the white claw of high noon.
- 7:08(laughing)
- 7:10- I had a fountain of high noon in my skirts.
- 7:13- Inside of you.
- 7:14- I think we need to run it back
- 7:17and in San Francisco, I'm like,
- 7:19I agree and I will stay sober this time
- 7:23and remember the show.
- 7:25It'll be great.
- 7:25(laughing)
- 7:26- Yeah, maybe one tequila shot, not 10.
- 7:30I'm in one.
- 7:32- You know, and kids, that's how you remember concerts.
- 7:35- Dude, I am never getting drunk at a concert like that again.
- 7:39Like you pay all of this money to go see an artist
- 7:42and then you get hammered and don't remember anything.
- 7:46Like I was totally stone cold sober for Lady Gaga
- 7:49and I remember every little minute detail of that show.
- 7:52And then I saw, it went by myself to see Bob Moses
- 7:56and cannons maybe like a month ago.
- 7:59And sover and lovely time.
- 8:03- A lovely time.
- 8:04- Simply lovely.
- 8:06- Yeah, I think as I get older,
- 8:09I'm like, I wanna remember this more.
- 8:12I do.
- 8:13- The only concert I like fully cannot remember
- 8:17was "Modest Mouse" in the black,
- 8:18or the black eyed kids.
- 8:20- That would be a great show.
- 8:23- That would be a really funny combo.
- 8:25But yeah, "Modest Mouse" in the black keys.
- 8:28And yeah, I made some bad decisions that night.
- 8:31And you know, not good, not good.
- 8:34- That's what guys.
- 8:35- So, you know, I think we've learned our lesson there.
- 8:38- I don't remember the calm times.
- 8:40- In 2006.
- 8:41- Yeah.
- 8:42- That's okay, that's fine.
- 8:44Look at us now.
- 8:45- Speaking of 2006.
- 8:47- Yeah, now it's time to gird your loins everyone.
- 8:52We're talking about the Devil Where's Prada.
- 8:54And if you're listening to this episode on the dates
- 8:57released, 'cause you love us.
- 8:59The sequel to the 2006 movie opens tomorrow
- 9:03or shoot, there may be a preview screening today.
- 9:07So we thought that we would really revisit
- 9:09this absolutely iconic movie about fashion,
- 9:13ambition, dealing with shitty friends
- 9:16in the boss from hell.
- 9:19So, Shonda, where were you?
- 9:22The first time you saw Devil Where's Prada,
- 9:24take me back to 2006.
- 9:27- Ooh, the way back machine.
- 9:29I was in junior high school.
- 9:31- Ooh, cute.
- 9:32- Thank you, I was cute.
- 9:35I don't remember seeing this for the first time,
- 9:38but I mean, I love this movie.
- 9:40It's a great movie.
- 9:41And then rewatched it for this episode obviously.
- 9:44And my husband had never seen it.
- 9:46I don't know, sometimes like, quote unquote,
- 9:49girly movies.
- 9:50He'll watch them, he doesn't care.
- 9:52Like he's seen stuff before.
- 9:54This one slipped his radar, so he watched it with me.
- 9:56He really liked it too.
- 9:57But there are definitely some parts of this movie
- 10:00that don't age very well.
- 10:03But, you know, it was, it's 20 years old.
- 10:05But overall, I think as a film, it really does.
- 10:09And I love like the cultural discourse around it.
- 10:12Like people have been breaking this movie down for years.
- 10:14Like, who was the real villain?
- 10:17Like, who was the worst person in the movie?
- 10:20Who was actually a good person?
- 10:22And I love this movie.
- 10:23What about you?
- 10:24- I absolutely loved it.
- 10:27I actually remember exactly where I was.
- 10:30When I first watched this movie, I was in Chicago
- 10:33visiting my aunt, my uncle, my cousin.
- 10:37And my parents were there as well.
- 10:40And we all family watched this.
- 10:42- No.
- 10:43- And it's just like everybody loved it.
- 10:45- Yeah.
- 10:46- It is truly like such a, I mean, like there are problems
- 10:51with certain phrases and things of the time.
- 10:54But I think that this movie is really great
- 10:57at connecting with audiences of all ages at the time
- 11:02and even today.
- 11:03And it's just incredibly iconic.
- 11:06It has Merrill Streep and Halfway, Emily Blunt,
- 11:08Stanley Tucci, Simone Baker and Adrian Grineer.
- 11:13- Grineer, I think, yeah.
- 11:15- Yeah, Adrian Grineer, Hottie.
- 11:17Oh, he's so hot.
- 11:19He's so fun.
- 11:20- It's definitely like, I mean, it's a little like sexual
- 11:24and like adult, but not overtly so.
- 11:27So, you know, even like the one like sex scene
- 11:30and it just kind of like they kiss
- 11:31and then they wake up in bed the next day.
- 11:33So it's definitely like, you can watch it with your family
- 11:36without you know, being all awkward
- 11:38in front of your parents.
- 11:39Not that you ever would.
- 11:40You watch Nicole Kidman get her ass eaten out
- 11:43when we're dead.
- 11:44(laughing)
- 11:46- RIP, RIP.
- 11:48- Love you John.
- 11:52- What the fuck are you guys watching?
- 11:54- Truly, you know, almost those moments.
- 11:56- Yeah, so I actually did not know this
- 11:59until the second movie was coming out.
- 12:02It is based on the book, The Devil Wars Prada
- 12:06by Lauren Weisberger.
- 12:09And it was directed by David Frankel
- 12:11and was adapted to a screenplay by Eileen Brosh McKenna.
- 12:16And it is just ultimately such an iconic movie.
- 12:21If you were unaware, The Devil Wars Prada is based on
- 12:26Anna Winter.
- 12:28- From Go.
- 12:29- Yep, there we go, oh my God.
- 12:31- I got you baby.
- 12:32- In the case.
- 12:33- It's like you were like when Emily
- 12:35had her little blackout moment
- 12:36and couldn't remember the name of it.
- 12:37That's what I'd come up with stairs.
- 12:39And then Andy was like, that's the ambassador.
- 12:43- I got you.
- 12:44- So it's based on Anna Winter,
- 12:47promising her an image.
- 12:48She's been quite a long day.
- 12:50And Anna Winter is ultimately like an iconic figure
- 12:55in "Vogue, American Vogue's History."
- 12:59She came from British Vogue and then came to "American Vogue"
- 13:03and made it what it is.
- 13:05If you've actually, if you watch this movie and you're like,
- 13:08dang, I really wanna know like who the real life inspiration
- 13:12for Miranda Priestly's character
- 13:15or the character of Miranda Priestly.
- 13:17Watch "Vogue" in the 90s.
- 13:20It is so, so interesting.
- 13:22- Oh, is that a documentary?
- 13:24- Yes, and it's interesting.
- 13:26- So it's honestly one of the best fashion documentaries
- 13:29I've ever seen.
- 13:30- I always wanna watch a documentary
- 13:32and then I sit there in front of the TV
- 13:33and I'm like, Olivia has mentioned a documentary
- 13:36every single episode of this show.
- 13:38And in that moment I can never think of anything.
- 13:40So I need you to take a look.
- 13:41- You just gotta get a PCJ pops.
- 13:43- Yes.
- 13:44- PCJ pops, you know.
- 13:45- And I'm in a chatroom show.
- 13:47- Yeah.
- 13:47- I'll have to check that out.
- 13:49And Anna went to her is definitely well known
- 13:52as a tough person to work for.
- 13:55Just like, Miranda Priestly is.
- 13:58Very particular abrasive, a tough person wants things
- 14:03done correctly and if they are not, then she will let you know.
- 14:08And in the movie, Miranda is a terrible boss to work for.
- 14:13Like, we'll just say that.
- 14:14She's a terrible boss.
- 14:16She's complicated and like they show like
- 14:18a little human side of her towards the end.
- 14:20But I would never in a million years work for her.
- 14:23Absolutely not.
- 14:24- So, I don't know what the says about me,
- 14:28but I think the older I get, the less I think that she's
- 14:32a terrible person.
- 14:34I think that she is a cold person.
- 14:37- Yes.
- 14:37I don't think she's a bad person.
- 14:38I think she's a bad boss.
- 14:40- Yeah, I think that like to think about running
- 14:43the biggest fashion magazine in all of the world
- 14:46and you have an assistant, right?
- 14:50And like your job as an assistant is to like manage
- 14:53that person's life in so many different ways.
- 14:56And like your job is to ultimately like make
- 14:59that person's life easier.
- 15:01So I do think it is like the old and maybe I'm just like
- 15:05a corporate slave at this point and like I'm so being jealous.
- 15:09Olivia will find that Harry Potter manuscript.
- 15:11God damn it.
- 15:12- I'll find it.
- 15:13Dude, we always watch you guys with Andrew
- 15:15and like the scene where Miranda is stranded in Florida
- 15:18and like demands that Andy gets her a plane out.
- 15:21And it's like it's just a little rain
- 15:23and then it cuts to like a full blown of her, okay?
- 15:25And outside Andrew's yelling at the TV,
- 15:28how is she supposed to do that?
- 15:30How can she do that?
- 15:32How can she be so serious?
- 15:33- No, they're definitely doing that.
- 15:34- Where you're like, okay, whatever.
- 15:37- Yeah.
- 15:38- But yeah, no, I think that it's such an interesting thing.
- 15:40And when I think some of that may be like my respect
- 15:44for Anna Windtour, I do think that she is a very successful woman
- 15:49who grew up like grew to the superstar
- 15:55and the person that she is today in a time that like women
- 16:00who were doing everything men were doing
- 16:02were beaches and things like that.
- 16:04- And Andy even says that in the news.
- 16:07- Yeah, she's like, if, you know Miranda was a man,
- 16:10you guys would be calling her a leader and amazing
- 16:14instead of like the dragon woman or the bitch.
- 16:15But like, you know, I understand you have to be cold
- 16:18and calculating in this business.
- 16:20Like she is at the end when she kind of fucks Nigel over.
- 16:23By the way, we're gonna be talking spoilers
- 16:25for this movie that came out 20 years ago.
- 16:27- For sure.
- 16:28(laughing)
- 16:30So she fucks Nigel over and that's when Andy kind of has
- 16:32her realization of like, I don't want this life.
- 16:35I don't want to career that I have to stab people
- 16:39in the back for.
- 16:40But I do think that she has that mutual respect
- 16:42with Miranda where it's like, and you do and that's fine.
- 16:45You know, they see each other at the end
- 16:46and they wave and kind of nod at each other.
- 16:49So in the end, I don't think she has any like,
- 16:52wow, that lady was a crazy bitch.
- 16:54She's just like, that's, this isn't what I want for my life,
- 16:57but that's okay.
- 16:58- Yeah, ultimately, and I think, you know,
- 17:01to go back to the older you get the more you like,
- 17:04reframe on it, I think that when you first go
- 17:08through this movie, right?
- 17:08This movie really is like all about like perspective, right?
- 17:12So you're coming from Andy Sax's point of view
- 17:16who is, you know, one thing about Anne Hathaway,
- 17:20she is phenomenal in a makeup or makeup,
- 17:25in a makeup or a print of styries,
- 17:28print of styries, blueprint.
- 17:30Devil Wars product made it even better.
- 17:33You know, I don't know how long she's so from me,
- 17:35but like Anne Hathaway is so gorgeous.
- 17:38- She got, God forbid a woman wears a sweater.
- 17:41Like, oh my gosh, yeah, that is one of the crazier things
- 17:44about rewatching it.
- 17:46And again, like in the 2000s, like we were just seeing
- 17:50like perfect stick skin or like,
- 17:54like, women who like, yeah, I think that we were like,
- 17:59wow, she's so frumpy.
- 18:02She has like, naturally wavy hair going.
- 18:05She's, you know, not dressed like someone who would be at Vogue.
- 18:09- And she's a size six.
- 18:11There's a running joke throughout the entire movie
- 18:13that she's fat.
- 18:15She is literally a size six, which is not fat.
- 18:19I kept looking at my husband and going,
- 18:21by the way, that's not fat.
- 18:23That's not fat.
- 18:24And he's like, I know that's not fat.
- 18:25And I'm like, like the things that we were being sold,
- 18:29you know, it's like the, oh gosh, Bridget Jones diary
- 18:32and she was like 135 pounds and the whole plot of that movie
- 18:36is that she's such a fat ass.
- 18:38- I wish I was 135 pounds.
- 18:40- Literally.
- 18:41Same.
- 18:42So I do think that that didn't age well.
- 18:44I know that it's a joke and it's supposed to be like a commentary.
- 18:49But at a certain point, it loses being a commentary
- 18:53and just becomes body shaming, especially when he,
- 18:55he's like, you bet your size six ass and she's like four.
- 18:59Like, you know, she, ooh, I'm skinny now.
- 19:01And it's like, ooh, like instead of her being like,
- 19:04you guys know that I'm not fat, right?
- 19:07- You guys, you guys all know that, right?
- 19:09Like, I just want to make sure that we're all clear
- 19:11that we all know that I'm not fat.
- 19:13And even if I was, so the fuck.
- 19:14- Yeah, I think it goes back to like,
- 19:17- It is a product of the time, right?
- 19:18Like we did our America's Next Top Model episode.
- 19:21We're really talking about like a size six is plus size.
- 19:24Don't make my God.
- 19:25- It absolutely is not.
- 19:27Like I'm a size eight to a size six, depending on clothes.
- 19:30- Literally, I was telling Edra, I'm like, I'm a six.
- 19:33(laughing)
- 19:35- Right, and body types are different.
- 19:37And you know, if you're a size 12,
- 19:39you're still hot as hell.
- 19:42- Literally, you care.
- 19:43- Literally, you, everybody's body is different
- 19:45and they're all beautiful there.
- 19:48But yeah, I think like that is a really big thing within it.
- 19:51And I think they do a good job at kind of making her,
- 19:56like really early on feel avert,
- 19:59just joining into this.
- 20:00Like if you think about fashion gurus today,
- 20:05and that kind of like culture of like,
- 20:09oh, should now I know these spring collections,
- 20:11I know all of these things,
- 20:13and just have like such a sense of like knowledge
- 20:16and worship to these people, someone who comes in,
- 20:18he's like, I just need a job
- 20:20and this is a really big magazine.
- 20:22- Oh yeah.
- 20:23- And then come in.
- 20:23- Of course they would be like, why are you here?
- 20:26- Yeah, like we respect this so much.
- 20:28And this is something that we care about so much.
- 20:31And she, you know, she does make it clear like,
- 20:35oh God, I'm just, I'm a little better than all of this.
- 20:37Oh, you guys were thinking about that.
- 20:39No, I'm, you know, Andy does like,
- 20:42I'm not like other girls.
- 20:44- Yeah, they put her down for being humongous.
- 20:46- They put her down for being humongous.
- 20:47- Yeah, she's a little like, well, I'm smart.
- 20:50You know, and I do like that she is like, okay,
- 20:53well, I do, if I care about this job
- 20:55and I wanna keep it,
- 20:56I do need to start kind of stepping up a little bit
- 20:58and listening and learning and caring, you know,
- 21:01to the detriment of her relationship with her dear boy
- 21:05for Nate.
- 21:06Let's talk about Nate a little bit.
- 21:09What do you think about Nate?
- 21:11- Let's talk about the friends.
- 21:12Let's talk about the friends.
- 21:14Well, first of all, he's fine as hell.
- 21:16I'm gonna say that.
- 21:17- He is fine as well.
- 21:19- Yeah.
- 21:20- Adrian, can you say something?
- 21:21- Yeah, I think that, yeah, I think that is my,
- 21:26partner, like, started working at this place
- 21:30and then missed my birthday.
- 21:31I would feel a little upset about it.
- 21:33(laughs)
- 21:35- I think so.
- 21:36- And I started to feel like they lost a sense of themselves.
- 21:40But at the same time, like, I think that,
- 21:43that is part of like growing up.
- 21:44And I think that he's probably not a bad person.
- 21:48Like, I think that we really demonize him.
- 21:50Like, it's a, like, decent person, wrong,
- 21:54wrong fit in a relationship where neither of them understood.
- 21:59- Yeah, the other ones needs at the time.
- 22:04And it's like, they were probably really cute through college
- 22:06and they had like the same goals and stuff.
- 22:08But then as you get older, your goals changed from your partners,
- 22:11especially 'cause they're both like in their early 20s
- 22:14in this movie.
- 22:15She says that she just graduated college.
- 22:18I don't know, like, Andrew and I were talking.
- 22:20And I was like, if I had to work one job for one year,
- 22:22I would change my life.
- 22:24But I needed to miss your birthday.
- 22:28And he's like, I hate my birthday anyway.
- 22:30(laughs)
- 22:30But I'm like, okay, but at like 23,
- 22:33it probably would have been devastating.
- 22:35At 37, he's like, can we not have a birthday actually?
- 22:39Can you just get my birthday?
- 22:41- Yeah.
- 22:41- It's like, it can be very scheduled, right?
- 22:43- Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 22:44- But they seem like they had a whole party and stuff planned.
- 22:47I don't know.
- 22:48I see them both messing up in this relationship.
- 22:51And her friends kind of suck too.
- 22:53Her girlfriend is all happy that she gets the bag.
- 22:56- I think that she gets the bag more than him.
- 22:57- Yeah, right.
- 22:59She's all excited that she gets the purse,
- 23:01but then they're minute her boss calls her.
- 23:03They all play keep away with her phone.
- 23:04I'm like, who does that?
- 23:06You know that she's afraid she's gonna get fired at any minute.
- 23:10Calm down, you guys.
- 23:11- Yeah, yeah.
- 23:12I think what the movie, in itself,
- 23:17and a lot of my nitpicky things is,
- 23:19they really put down fashion as something
- 23:24an intellectual can do.
- 23:26- Yes.
- 23:27- And it's not worth, it's something women like,
- 23:30and it's not something that is valuable,
- 23:34and it's something women and shallow stupid people like.
- 23:38But I do think that they,
- 23:40I'm glad that she has that one friend.
- 23:42She has the token 2000s gay friend,
- 23:44who is in her two young kids.
- 23:46- Yeah.
- 23:47- But in Miranda, it makes it clear
- 23:50that she's a very intelligent woman,
- 23:52like that whole speech,
- 23:53and she's like,
- 23:54"You think that that Cerulean sweater
- 23:55"has nothing to do with you iconic, of course."
- 23:58But she breaks down the history of what designers did
- 24:03Cerulean and their shows to trickle down
- 24:06to the department stores,
- 24:07to the Ross eventually,
- 24:10where Andy probably got it,
- 24:12the supply chain, to supply in demand.
- 24:15And it's like,
- 24:16just because people dress hot,
- 24:19and this is what they're working in,
- 24:20doesn't mean they're stupid.
- 24:22And I think Andy realizes that by the end, too.
- 24:25A lot can be said for if Emily is a good person or not,
- 24:29or if she just really pictures this life for herself,
- 24:33that she doesn't want anyone to get in the way of.
- 24:35- Yeah, I think that this movie has so many iconic lines,
- 24:40like the sweater speech,
- 24:42we have four-hours for spring,
- 24:44ground breaking.
- 24:45- Breaking.
- 24:47- Gerger lines, right?
- 24:49There's so many different,
- 24:51like really good ones. - Don't be ridiculous, Andrea,
- 24:52everybody wants this.
- 24:54- Yeah.
- 24:55Or sometimes when I'm really, really hungry
- 24:58and I haven't eaten all day,
- 24:59I'm like, I need a cheese cube.
- 25:01Like, - Yeah.
- 25:03- Emily.
- 25:03- I don't eat.
- 25:04And then when I feel like I'm gonna pass out,
- 25:06I eat a cube of cheese.
- 25:08- Yeah, I have a single cube of cheese.
- 25:10(laughing)
- 25:12It's called Girl Dinner.
- 25:14I know there's so many lines in this movie
- 25:16and so many memes that you don't realize it
- 25:18until you rewatch it.
- 25:19And I was like,
- 25:20"Oh, Andrea, that's where that meme comes from."
- 25:23Oh yeah, that's that meme.
- 25:25Like, I've never seen that meme before.
- 25:27- Yeah, I absolutely think there's,
- 25:29like, it's just such a great, great movie.
- 25:33Whenever we were planning to do this episode,
- 25:36I was like,
- 25:38okay, what are some fun facts
- 25:40about the Devil Wars Prada,
- 25:43Merrill Streep based Miranda's voice on Clint Eastwood.
- 25:48(laughing)
- 25:48What?
- 25:49(laughing)
- 25:51She said it 'cause it was calm, quiet and terrifying.
- 25:54- Oh, you know what?
- 25:55I could see that one of Miranda's most terrifying,
- 25:58like monologues in this is when she misses the twins,
- 26:03like, recital or whatever.
- 26:05She's like, it was wonderful.
- 26:07However, I didn't see it because I was not there.
- 26:12Just like so quiet and calm, but like lethal.
- 26:17Like, you know, take a chance on the smart fat girl.
- 26:22- I just like, oh my God, it's so just like,
- 26:25(laughing)
- 26:25- Oh, stab to the gut.
- 26:27- Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:29And, you know, some quick firing off,
- 26:32Emily Blunt was actually sick during filming.
- 26:36And so on those scenes where she's on the verge of collapse
- 26:40is actually quite true.
- 26:41- That's so fun.
- 26:42- When she was truly very, very sick.
- 26:44And then, their costume budget, which is,
- 26:47I mean, the clothing in it,
- 26:49it's a fashion movie, you would think it's gorgeous.
- 26:51- It's gorgeous.
- 26:51- It would be high.
- 26:53It was at $1 million,
- 26:55which was one of the biggest budgets at the time.
- 26:58- Okay.
- 26:59- And we have the iconic Patricia Field
- 27:01from Sex in the City,
- 27:03who helped influence the styling direction.
- 27:08- That makes sense.
- 27:09The clothes are so good.
- 27:10And most of them, I think still,
- 27:12like I could see myself wearing that 20 years later.
- 27:15She has like one or two outfits that seem a little dated.
- 27:18- For the most part.
- 27:20- Yeah, the little hat.
- 27:21But most of the sessions where,
- 27:24I'm like gorgeous, gorgeous wearing that, yep, nailed it.
- 27:28So timeless, timeless fashion.
- 27:31- Yeah, and we see,
- 27:36this is where I learned what Paris Fashion Week was
- 27:38for someone who grew up in the Midwest.
- 27:42Those scenes were actually filmed
- 27:44in a Paris Fashion Week
- 27:46and a lot of designers
- 27:48loaned real couture pieces.
- 27:51Again, like this is based on Anna Winter.
- 27:55They wanted to ultimately be kind of a piece of that.
- 27:59And make sure that the fashion was good.
- 28:04And Anne Hathaway was not going to be the first choice.
- 28:07Several new dresses turned the roll down.
- 28:10- Oh, okay.
- 28:11- So I can't imagine it.
- 28:13No, I can't imagine it without her either.
- 28:15She's such a good actress.
- 28:16And like you mentioned earlier,
- 28:18she does have that great quality of being like,
- 28:21just kind of the every girl.
- 28:23Like, you know, she's,
- 28:24each girl cheeses and drinks beer in our apartment
- 28:27and has wavy hair or god forbid.
- 28:29But like, and then, you know, the makeover scene.
- 28:32And like you see that kind of like change
- 28:34of her through the whole movie.
- 28:36And at the end, after she quits,
- 28:38you could see that she's kept a little bit of both.
- 28:40She has that like cute leather jacket on
- 28:42with like the night.
- 28:43So it's like, she still has like the fashion sense
- 28:47and then she still has herself
- 28:48just a little more like refined.
- 28:50So.
- 28:51- I love that detail.
- 28:52- I think the montage of her
- 28:54once Stanley Tucci gives her
- 28:56the makeover. - Yes.
- 28:57- Is probably one of my favorite
- 28:592000s movie montages.
- 29:02- To Vogue, right?
- 29:03- And it's just so good.
- 29:04It's so good. - So good.
- 29:05- Yeah, like all the different outfits.
- 29:06She's like getting the coffee, she's running,
- 29:09she's catching the clouds.
- 29:10- Holding the colors. - Oh, yeah.
- 29:12(laughing)
- 29:13- I love it.
- 29:14She's not bumbling anymore.
- 29:16- Yeah, absolutely.
- 29:19So we're gonna take a quick break.
- 29:21- And we'll be right back.
- 29:22(dramatic music)
- 29:26(dramatic music)
- 29:27- So before we get into the sequel,
- 29:29I'd like to invite all of you to check out
- 29:31the pop culture junkie Patreon.
- 29:33We don't ask for much because a little bit of money

- 29:50Just go to patreon.com/popculturejunkiepodcast
- 29:55and subscribe.
- 29:57And so, as you probably know,
- 30:00and as we mentioned at the top of the episode,
- 30:02we have the Devil Wars product to coming out
- 30:06and we are so unbelievably excited about it.
- 30:10Now I mentioned. - I have a question.
- 30:11- Good.
- 30:12I know, dude.
- 30:13Okay, as someone who hates a sequel,
- 30:17- It's new.
- 30:17- It normally refuses to watch it.
- 30:19I am an accepted sequel.
- 30:21- Especially.
- 30:22- Yes.
- 30:23- If it's a planned sequel, then yes.
- 30:25But if it's like a 20 years later,
- 30:27nostalgia bait sequel, most of the time,
- 30:31those aren't very good.
- 30:32So I really hope that this is good.
- 30:35- There is a Devil Wars product to book.
- 30:38- Yes.
- 30:39- That's good.
- 30:40- That gets me in the book canon,
- 30:42where ultimately, there is some source material
- 30:46that they are pulling from.
- 30:48And I think personally,
- 30:50like I have a lot of faith in Meryl Strebe,
- 30:55- Yes.
- 30:56- In Halfway and Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
- 30:58- Shit.
- 30:59- The cast is stacked to hell.
- 31:01Like it's gonna be, the acting is gonna be superb.
- 31:05It's just like when the movie ended,
- 31:07we looked at each other and we're like,
- 31:09why would she go back there?
- 31:11Why would she work for Miranda again?
- 31:13But I think I, you know, kind of watching the previews,
- 31:16it kind of explains why.
- 31:17So.
- 31:18- Yes.
- 31:19- Yeah.
- 31:20And so we wanted to just kind of run through
- 31:23our predictions for the Devil Wars product.
- 31:26Obviously we know some things about the movie.
- 31:29As soon as this thing started filming,
- 31:31we were getting stills so much,
- 31:35which does freak me out for movies.
- 31:37Like if you think of like it ends with us,
- 31:39oh God, we knew too much too early about that.
- 31:42And look how that one turned out.
- 31:43But.
- 31:44- I know.
- 31:44And we got like still shots of the,
- 31:46the now canceled Buffy sequel from "Busy."
- 31:50- Yes.
- 31:51- We had like those behind the scene photos
- 31:52of Sarah Michelle Geller.
- 31:54And, you know, everyone was like,
- 31:56why is she dressed like that and I got canceled?
- 31:58But that's okay.
- 32:00It's fine.
- 32:01I think this can go well.
- 32:05- I have to say that.
- 32:06- Yeah.
- 32:06And based on the trailers,
- 32:07really what we've seen is this is 20 years later.
- 32:11So it is kind of following the time, right?
- 32:13It's coming out in 2026.
- 32:15And Miranda Priestly is still running runway magazine.
- 32:20However, it is going to follow the real world struggles
- 32:25of publication today, right?
- 32:27The print media is really struggling to stay afloat
- 32:32and tensions are high.
- 32:34And so from what we can tell from the trailers
- 32:38that we've seen,
- 32:40Miranda seeks help from a familiar assistant.
- 32:45- Who is now quite successful.
- 32:47Andy Sacks goes on to get a job in news media
- 32:51as we see at the end of the first film.
- 32:55But here's everything we kind of know so far.
- 32:58- Yes.
- 32:59So as you mentioned,
- 33:00it's set in present day world of print journalism,
- 33:02which is, when was the last time you picked up
- 33:05a thread magazine?
- 33:06Like the airport every once in a while,
- 33:08I will for like nostalgia purposes.
- 33:11And if I forgot a book.
- 33:13I mean, I used to be a subscriber to Cosmopolitan.
- 33:17I subscribed to Teen Vogue.
- 33:19I never got to Vogue.
- 33:21It just when I was like a teenager in my early 20s,
- 33:23I had Teen Vogue.
- 33:24I had a glamour subscription for years.
- 33:27But the last time I actually bought a magazine,
- 33:29I think it was just at an airport as like a,
- 33:31what off.
- 33:33- Yeah, I don't think I buy a physical Vogue magazine,
- 33:37but I have read quite a bit of Vogue articles recently,
- 33:41but yeah, I think a lot of it has moved online.
- 33:44- Oh my gosh.
- 33:45I mean, the last like physical,
- 33:47the thing I read was a restoration hardware.
- 33:50- Oh my gosh.
- 33:51- It was all like,
- 33:52- It was like,
- 33:53beautiful couches.
- 33:55Way out of my pricering.
- 33:57- Anytime I go to those dollars for a couch.
- 33:59- She's, anytime I go to the doctor's office
- 34:01or like my therapist, I'll see like,
- 34:03oh, better home and garden from six years ago.
- 34:06Maybe I'll flip through that and learn a thing.
- 34:08- Do.
- 34:09- But yeah, I agree.
- 34:10- I agree.
- 34:10- Oh good.
- 34:12A lot of it's moved online.
- 34:14And team Vogue has amazing articles.
- 34:17And I do think that magazines now kind of have
- 34:19that great mix of like fashion and stuff,
- 34:22but it's also moved away from like,
- 34:24how to lose 20 pounds in six hours
- 34:27and get the abs of your dreams and win him back.
- 34:30I do also remember reading magazines back in the day
- 34:32that would like,
- 34:33give you like sex tips.
- 34:36- Oh, a lot of it.
- 34:39- It was around like,
- 34:40how to play with your man's balls.
- 34:43Like, don't forget the balls.
- 34:44- Why didn't we have so many questions?
- 34:46- Yeah, don't forget those balls.
- 34:48So now anytime I journey to that area,
- 34:52I'm like, well Cosmo told me I should never forget your balls.
- 34:56- Yeah, you know, never do, never do.
- 34:58And that's why we need print media back.
- 35:00- To learn how to not neglect the testicles, ladies.
- 35:05- Is fondle the balls, you know?
- 35:07- Fondle the balls.
- 35:08- We also know that Aetring Grenier is not coming back.
- 35:13Obviously him and Andy are together after 20 years.
- 35:16- Obviously.
- 35:17- Yeah, thank God.
- 35:18Thank God.
- 35:19He was like a little salty about it.
- 35:21Like he was kind of like making some statements about it.
- 35:25- But I do think he came around because recently,
- 35:28the Devil Wears Prada and Starbucks have a collaboration
- 35:31because Capitalism and they featured Aetring Grenier
- 35:35in one of the commercials.
- 35:37It's really funny.
- 35:38And he's ordering a drink and like going on about Nate
- 35:42to the barista and then it cuts to the barista
- 35:44and he's just like, okay.
- 35:46And then he's like, let's leave Nate in 2026.
- 35:51And let's have our energy refreshers to, you know,
- 35:53it comes back to being a Starbucks.
- 35:55And Devil Wears Prada to like collab commercial.
- 35:59And so it seems like he's in on the joke now,
- 36:01probably because he got a nice paycheck for that commercial.
- 36:04- Yeah, for sure.
- 36:05- He was like, he was quite salty in the beginning.
- 36:08Like I wasn't asked back and then I think he was like,
- 36:11oh shoot, I need to dial that back.
- 36:14And you know, he got a little bit of brand deal out of it.
- 36:18- Good man.
- 36:19- Well something that makes me feel quite hopeful
- 36:21going into this is the original screenwriter,
- 36:25director and producer were tapped for this project.
- 36:29- Yes.
- 36:30- And so I feel like the original actors,
- 36:35Sans, Adrian, the original director, screenwriter, producer.
- 36:40I feel like we're gonna get some good stuff ultimately
- 36:45and really just know that we're in good hands.
- 36:48But I mean, okay.
- 36:49I didn't, I purposely did not look up
- 36:53what happens in the book.
- 36:55- Yeah, I don't know either.
- 36:56- You've seen anything about it.
- 36:57Okay, so this will be fun.
- 37:00- Yes, I have gathered from the trailers
- 37:03that Emily doesn't work there anymore.
- 37:05Thank God, 'cause it's been a 20 years, right?
- 37:09- Yeah.
- 37:10- And she was at the very beginning of her career too.
- 37:12She was in her early 20s.
- 37:14It seems like maybe she moved on to like another big magazine
- 37:17or she's running something.
- 37:19Stanley Tucci's character is still working there.
- 37:22It kind of seems like which is shocking to me.
- 37:25Like has he not got the-- - After the betrayal.
- 37:27- Yeah, after the betrayal and after, you know,
- 37:29he's like, she'll pay me back when it means,
- 37:32you know, when the time comes and you know,
- 37:33even Andy's like, are you sure about that?
- 37:35But like, has he not?
- 37:37Like hopefully he's like the vice president or something.
- 37:40- Yeah.
- 37:41- I'm hoping that Miranda retires at the end of the movie
- 37:44and maybe has a hint of a personal life.
- 37:48I don't know, I'm hoping, and you know,
- 37:50they teased it in the first movie.
- 37:51She's got the twins, she's going through like a subsequent
- 37:54divorce, you know, she tries to hide her personal life
- 37:59from anyone, but like, I hope she has a little bit more
- 38:01of a hint of a personal life in this movie.
- 38:04And maybe Andy helps her kind of get in touch with that
- 38:07in some way and then I hope she retires.
- 38:10- Okay, okay, you're saying
- 38:11that Miranda priestly retirement there.
- 38:15So I think that from what I can say,
- 38:18I think that Emily Blanc's character is going to be
- 38:22kind of like a minutes to Miranda priestly.
- 38:25Like I think that she's going to be finally getting
- 38:29her come-up ends in a way.
- 38:30- Yeah.
- 38:31And you know, I could, if I were thinking like, okay,
- 38:362006, 20 years later, Andy Sacks comes back
- 38:41to Runway magazine, is it going to end with her becoming
- 38:46editor-in-chief of her life?
- 38:48- Oh God.
- 38:50- But then she would be doing it tonight, although,
- 38:54but like she would also, she would become that person.
- 38:59- So I don't know, now you bring that up.
- 39:03Like I could see them doing it where Andy Sacks
- 39:06like becomes that person.
- 39:08Now if you look at like the trailer,
- 39:10it does seem like she becomes more of like a fashion girl
- 39:14in like a fashion forward person.
- 39:16- Oh yeah, she looks amazing, but I also think because,
- 39:20like if you think of Sex and the City to the movie, right?
- 39:23It's terrible movie.
- 39:24(laughs)
- 39:25But it was definitely horrible movie,
- 39:27but it leaned in a lot to the fashion
- 39:29and it kind of like went over the top with the fashion.
- 39:33And I'm thinking that's probably what this movie will do.
- 39:35Like be over the top with the fashion.
- 39:38I'm hoping like there's an explanation of why
- 39:41Andy's dressed like in designer coacher.
- 39:44Like I hope she makes enough money to do that.
- 39:47'Cause otherwise it's like, how the fuck is she affording this?
- 39:50But if she's, you know, working like,
- 39:51she has a high paying job, then sure.
- 39:53And I hope it kind of stays true to like,
- 39:56yeah, she's, you know, dress is really well
- 39:58because she's a, you know, 40-some odd year old woman
- 40:01with a strong career.
- 40:02She's a business woman, but hopefully she still has
- 40:05that kind of down to earth like, you know,
- 40:09dress is like a normal person would dress.
- 40:12I don't know.
- 40:13- Okay.
- 40:14- Okay.
- 40:15- I like that.
- 40:16So you're, you'd say, I think it's gonna be Emily
- 40:19more than Andy getting--
- 40:21- I think getting, yeah.
- 40:23- Or getting runway.
- 40:24- I hope Emily gets runway in the end,
- 40:27but I hope that she also has,
- 40:29'cause we saw softer moments of Emily
- 40:30throughout the first movie, right?
- 40:32Where she genuinely says thank you to Andy
- 40:35for helping her on the red carpet at the end
- 40:38when she's like, you have very big shoes to fill
- 40:40to the poor new assistant.
- 40:42- I hope we have softer Andy with, you know,
- 40:45the little zingers that she's known,
- 40:47or I'm sorry, softer Emily.
- 40:49But I could see her Nigel kind of tag teaming.
- 40:51Like, Meryl Streep is 76 years old.
- 40:54Now, I mean, you know, obviously we have people
- 40:58who work in fucking government in their 80s,
- 41:00who should probably retire, but, you know,
- 41:02I hope you hear Meryl.
- 41:04- Meryl Streep has earned her retirement,
- 41:06and maybe go on an island somewhere
- 41:08and kick back with a cocktail
- 41:10and not answer her emails every five seconds.
- 41:12But I don't know, that's what I'm hoping for.
- 41:15Maybe she's grandma Meryl now too.
- 41:18The twins are in their 30s now.
- 41:22- Yeah, I feel like one of those twins has to be gay
- 41:25and we're gonna get some, you know, gay,
- 41:27Gen Z jokes of like, yes, like Queen.
- 41:31(laughing)
- 41:33- There's gonna be so much.
- 41:34- I feel like they're really gonna lean in the mouth.
- 41:36- There's gonna be forced Gen Z humor.
- 41:39There are not gonna be any fat jokes.
- 41:41There's not gonna be a single.
- 41:43- That's part of our productions as well.
- 41:45- Yes, my prediction is may actually be
- 41:48an over correction of like body positivity
- 41:51and they're gonna try to like put that in there.
- 41:54- Yep, just like, and just like that did,
- 41:56where they threw in like the token black friend
- 42:00and you know, like they had people of color
- 42:03as like the side as the friends.
- 42:05They could be like, look, look, I have a friend
- 42:08and they're like, I have a plus side friend.
- 42:11- If they sex in the city too and dress like that,
- 42:14this I will riot.
- 42:17I'm not like I'm kidding.
- 42:18I hope there's more cast diversity,
- 42:20but I hope that those characters have personalities
- 42:23and plots and aren't just like there to be like,
- 42:26hi, I'm fulfilling a quota.
- 42:28Like, no, I want them to have like personality behind it.
- 42:32I did see that Simone Ashley was cast.
- 42:34I think she is.
- 42:35- Yeah, gorgeous.
- 42:36I love her.
- 42:37- So beautiful.
- 42:39- So beautiful, man.
- 42:40- I hope that she has.
- 42:41- I feel like she has.
- 42:41- She's an average of 10 episode.
- 42:42We just talked about how beautiful Simone Ashley is.
- 42:45(laughing)
- 42:46- For like 10 minutes.
- 42:47- Literally on her yearning face.
- 42:49I hope she gets to year in this movie.
- 42:51Like I hope she looks at a Chanel dress
- 42:54and gives us her yearning like.
- 42:55- Oh, it's a yearning.
- 42:57- Absolutely.
- 42:58And truly when we talk about cast here,
- 43:02they were throwing anyone and everyone in this
- 43:05and we are going to see outside of our fabulous four
- 43:09returning.
- 43:10We have Justin Thoreau, Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu,
- 43:15Simone Ashley, as we mentioned.
- 43:17We have Amanda Mora, a Lady Gaga baby is in this.
- 43:22- She's in it.
- 43:22I know she has the song, but I bet she has a cameo.
- 43:25- Yeah, I bet she has the song.
- 43:26- I bet she's on like the red carpet or something.
- 43:28The song.
- 43:29- She's on it.
- 43:30- I will say, I am a huge little monster.
- 43:32We all know this.
- 43:33The song Runway that she released with Do Chi.
- 43:36I said that it sounds like somebody typed in.
- 43:39Write me a gay fashion runway song into chat GPT
- 43:42and then this song came out.
- 43:43(laughing)
- 43:45- Yeah, it's like, could not be a strike oppose.
- 43:48- Yeah, but it's a fun little bob.
- 43:52(laughing)
- 43:53- Madonna, yeah.
- 43:54We also have Caleb Heron, we have BJ Novak,
- 43:57we have Rachel Bloom, we have Patrick Bermall.
- 44:00Truly just so, so many iconic people,
- 44:04people like internet famous, Gen Z people.
- 44:07So I'm really, really interested to see how they see
- 44:11ours in it.
- 44:12Like there's just gonna be so many people wherever
- 44:15like, ooh, I, and hopefully they do not do
- 44:19too much fan service and we do too far into that,
- 44:23into member berries.
- 44:24- Yeah, I hope that they strike a good balance.
- 44:27Again, I am on this podcast said so many freaking times
- 44:32that I refuse to watch a sequel.
