- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Zach Power.
- 0:06Speaker 1: A 31-year-old woman has been ticketed and her vehicle has
- 0:09Speaker 1: been seized following a traffic stop on the TCH on Sunday.
- 0:12Speaker 1: RCMP and Whitburn were contacted by drivers who reported a
- 0:16Speaker 1: vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway driving erratically. Police pulled over
- 0:20Speaker 1: the vehicle and the driver was unable to provide a
- 0:23Speaker 1: valid insurance. The St. Bernard's woman has been ticketed for
- 0:28Speaker 1: driving without insurance and her vehicle has since been impounded.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson is laughing off an allegation
- 0:35Speaker 1: that she gave a finger to the opposition on the
- 0:38Speaker 1: House of Commons floor last week. The alleged incident occurred
- 0:42Speaker 1: during a heated exchange on Canada's relationship with France and
- 0:46Speaker 1: reports indicating that the EU nation was interested in pursuing
- 0:49Speaker 1: snow crab fisheries off the continental shelf. Thompson dismissed that
- 0:54Speaker 1: notion that she flipped the bird on VOCM open line
- 0:56Speaker 1: with Brian Callahan. Absolutely not. And you think otherwise. It's ridiculous.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Thompson calls the controversy surrounding the crab fishery not an
- 1:06Speaker 1: active story. A pothole on the Beer and Peninsula Highway
- 1:10Speaker 1: is causing havoc for drivers who are calling for action
- 1:14Speaker 1: to finally have it addressed. Corey Brown told VOCM open
- 1:17Speaker 1: line with Brian Callahan that he struck the unmarked road
- 1:20Speaker 1: hazard on September the 12th.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It was a dark, rainy night. When we passed by
- 1:26Speaker 2: Mile Hill, anybody from Burien Plains will know where Mile
- 1:28Speaker 2: Hill is, we struck a pothole, busted my tire, zero signage.
- 1:33Speaker 2: My father had to drive two and a half hours
- 1:34Speaker 2: to come pick us up. We repaired the tire, drove
- 1:37Speaker 2: back to St. John's Sunday, and still no signage.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Brown says that he was shocked to notice that the
- 1:46Speaker 1: same pothole was there weeks later. and him and his
- 1:50Speaker 1: family traveled to the Buren Peninsula for the Thanksgiving weekend.
- 1:53Speaker 1: They noticed a vehicle had pulled over on the side
- 1:55Speaker 1: of the road with two busted tires from the very
- 1:58Speaker 1: same pothole. The opposition is questioning the government's use of
- 2:01Speaker 1: public funds to purchase souvenir keychains for students who took
- 2:05Speaker 1: part in a pilgrimage to Beaumont Hamel. CBC is reporting
- 2:08Speaker 1: that Minister Andrea Barber spent over $ 1, 000 on 150 custom
- 2:13Speaker 1: yellow rubber boot keychains made by a company on the
- 2:16Speaker 1: West Coast. The company is said to have connections to
- 2:18Speaker 1: a PC candidate. Barber, who was well-known on social media
- 2:23Speaker 1: before becoming a public servant, is known for wearing yellow
- 2:25Speaker 1: rubber boots in her posts. Liberals are questioning the decision.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Tourism and culture critic Bettina Ford says that students had
- 2:32Speaker 1: traveled to Europe to learn more about the Battle of
- 2:34Speaker 1: Beaumont-Hamill and the sacrifices, and the trip should not have
- 2:38Speaker 1: been remembered with a token that reflects the minister's personal interests.
- 2:42Speaker 3: When public funds are used, Those kind of promotional items
- 2:47Speaker 3: should reflect Newfoundland and Labrador's identity, not an individual's personal branding.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Make no mistake about it. Yellow rubber boots, they are
- 3:00Speaker 3: the minister's signature brand.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
