- 0:07Hey, welcome on in everybody here to the
- 0:09postgame pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:11Nathan King joined by Patrick Bingham.
- 0:14For the second straight game, we are in
- 0:15the press room instead of out on the
- 0:16court. Um, this time it's not too loud.
- 0:18We just decided to do it here and it's
- 0:20like 12:45 in the morning, so there's
- 0:21nobody here anymore. Um, insane, insane
- 0:25finish for Auburn in its SEC home
- 0:28opener. That's two SEC games and two
- 0:31times that Patrick has run out onto the
- 0:33court at the end of regulation thinking
- 0:35that Auburn had hit a game-winning
- 0:36three. Last time I understand it was
- 0:38your vantage point. I
- 0:39>> it was the vantage point and it was the
- 0:41fact well I was like standing behind the
- 0:43bench and so I literally thought he hit
- 0:44a three and they had won and I ran onto
- 0:46the court and was like me to well you
- 0:49can't see it but there's like a mic
- 0:50right there to uh Kevin Overton and then
- 0:53I look over my shoulder I'm like no one
- 0:55else got up. I'm the only photo person
- 0:57out here with the entire team. And then
- 0:59I realized they'd only tied it. And then
- 1:01obviously the rest of everything
- 1:02happened.
- 1:02>> And now this time you are a little bit
- 1:04more absolved of blame because everybody
- 1:07thought this game was over. Keshan
- 1:08Murphy about a 36-footer. Great pass
- 1:11from Elijah Freeman. 6 on the clock. If
- 1:14I'm not mistaken, was 6 not what was on
- 1:16the clock when Kevin Overton took that
- 1:17shot? I think it was. I think it was 6.
- 1:19>> Oh, it might have been.
- 1:20>> Um, so insane gather for both of these
- 1:23guys. Um, Keshan Murphy buries a
- 1:2536-footer. Looks like Auburn has won the
- 1:28game. You get a crazy range of emotions
- 1:31in just over four minutes because they
- 1:33show it again and it was almost like
- 1:35confirmation or at least it looked like
- 1:36you had a double celebration. Like they
- 1:39went back to their bench and they showed
- 1:40it on the video board again and Auburn
- 1:42celebrated again because it looked like
- 1:43on the video board that he got it off in
- 1:45time.
- 1:45>> Um, ends up being waved off by the
- 1:48officials. I mean, just unreal finish.
- 1:51So then Texas A&M celebrates.
- 1:53Unbelievable game, Patrick. And
- 1:55obviously, you know, there's a lot to
- 1:56get into from what happened in this
- 1:58game, but but obviously the end takes
- 2:00the takes the foremost of our of our
- 2:02focus here. Um, and Steven Pearl said,
- 2:05look, you know, he was about 25 minutes
- 2:06late to his press conference because
- 2:08they're talking to the SEC league
- 2:09office. Now, they're not going to
- 2:11overturn the call, but he's looking for
- 2:13quote clarity. John Cohen, we saw him
- 2:16out there on the court with Pearl and a
- 2:18bunch of other Auburn officials. That's
- 2:19obviously the story after this one.
- 2:21Patrick is
- 2:21>> Yeah. Auburn feeling like they got
- 2:23jobbed. Once again, that's obviously
- 2:24what all Auburn fans.
- 2:25>> It's almost like you could do two
- 2:27postgame pods of like the ending and
- 2:28then oh, the rest of the game that
- 2:30happened, the other what's it uh 39
- 2:34minutes and 59 seconds. But yeah, I I
- 2:38mean they had staffers out there testing
- 2:41like hours after still testing to make
- 2:44sure like the buzzer was in line with
- 2:46the time which was in sync with
- 2:47everything else.
- 2:48>> Crazy. Um, I mean ultimately it's I
- 2:52guess in my opinion a judgment call. You
- 2:55see very weird blurry angles of one
- 2:57thing. You see other weird blurry angles
- 2:58of another. You have to make a call in a
- 3:00moment and they did uh to the dislike of
- 3:03everyone in the building. Sure. Um,
- 3:05yeah. I mean, just being down on the I
- 3:07mean, I was me to you to Keshan Murphy
- 3:09cuz I was ready to get the shot. And
- 3:12yeah, it was just a bizarre range of the
- 3:14double celebration, him running back
- 3:16over to the fans and then the whole
- 3:18ending. It just it Yeah. And it like it
- 3:22it just kind of continues to be the
- 3:24story for Auburn Athletics this calendar
- 3:26or this like sports season of I mean I
- 3:28hate to say the word but like being so
- 3:30close having these bizarre calls
- 3:32>> and it ending in that
- 3:35>> this felt like if the Jackson Arnold
- 3:37fumble was the last play of the game or
- 3:40something like that, you know. Um
- 3:42>> yeah, I mean look, Steven Pearl said
- 3:44after the game he and I I thought he
- 3:45handled this
- 3:47>> about as well as he could have
- 3:48afterwards. Um he said he said he told
- 3:50the team after the game like look we we
- 3:52can do one of two things. We can pout
- 3:54about it or we can get back in here and
- 3:55grind tomorrow. There are some more
- 3:57words that he used that I won't that are
- 3:58that are not safe for for children that
- 4:00that Steve is a little bit
- 4:01understandable after a game like this.
- 4:03But yeah, you're right Patrick. I mean I
- 4:04think the biggest gripe that Auburn fans
- 4:06have with this cuz are there a bunch of
- 4:08angles where you're like yeah it was on
- 4:09his fingertips. Sure. But at the same
- 4:12time it's again like a lot like the
- 4:14Jackson Arnold one. I I'm completely
- 4:16sympathetic to people who say,
- 4:18>> "Well, you called it on the and again,
- 4:20it's indisputable." The word and like I
- 4:23have yet to see anything that says it's
- 4:25indisputable cuz like you said, when you
- 4:27zoom there, it's like it's so blurry and
- 4:30and Keshan Murphy is a big dude. Like
- 4:31how long are his fingertips? Like it's
- 4:33it's really
- 4:34>> man, there is just nothing there that
- 4:37that makes you think anything concrete.
- 4:40>> On top of all of that,
- 4:41>> you had the situation that led to that.
- 4:43So there was 2.6 6 seconds on the clock
- 4:46and Texas&M had a good plan at the end.
- 4:48They were going to intentionally miss
- 4:49their uh they intentionally miss their
- 4:51second free throw. Pop Isac was at the
- 4:53foul line. Their plan was just miss it
- 4:56because Auburn had no timeouts. You have
- 4:57to get yourself get the rebound and
- 4:59throw a full like impossible. 99.999%
- 5:02chance of not going in.
- 5:04>> Well, instead he accidentally didn't
- 5:06touch rim. Yeah.
- 5:07>> Which gives Auburn the inbound pass that
- 5:09they actually had. Um, but both coaches
- 5:12showed some concern and and and you
- 5:15know, confusion over why that time was
- 5:18taken off. Ste,
- 5:19>> that was kind of my personal question
- 5:21was how did we lose the time for a play
- 5:23that should have happened that you were
- 5:24saying? I didn't understand that.
- 5:26>> Yeah, I guess my only thing would be
- 5:27okay. Do you I think and again I this
- 5:30they could have said this on the
- 5:31broadcast. I didn't see anybody I didn't
- 5:32see anybody say that it was actually
- 5:34they ruled that it did touch the rim
- 5:37>> and then I'm saying I'm saying that
- 5:38would be the most logical thing to me is
- 5:40saying it did touch the rim. It was an
- 5:42inadvertent whistle. We have to take
- 5:44that time off because you shouldn't have
- 5:45had that time in the first place cuz the
- 5:47game should be over sort of thing.
- 5:48>> Bucky McMillan's perspective was
- 5:51>> I mean he had it was the most blatant I
- 5:53have never heard a coach say basically
- 5:55that the refs gave a makeup call. like
- 5:58he was sitting here and I think everyone
- 5:59in the press room kind of looked around
- 6:00like did he just say that because I
- 6:02encourage you to I assume you put the
- 6:04video on
- 6:04>> Yeah. There's a Well, I mean the whole
- 6:06press conference on YouTube, but the
- 6:07short and on all of our social media.
- 6:09>> Yeah. What and and Bucky McMillan said
- 6:11he said I think the officials knew the
- 6:12situation and that if it was close
- 6:14talking about Murphy shot if it was
- 6:16close it needed to go our way because of
- 6:18what had just happened. I mean that it's
- 6:20just unreal what unfolded.
- 6:23>> That doesn't help our message board
- 6:24conspiracy theorist.
- 6:25>> No. I mean, just I I and I don't blame
- 6:27people. So, just just an insane insane
- 6:29finish. Um Steven Pearl's next press
- 6:32conference is at 1:45 Central on
- 6:35Thursday. That's usually not important
- 6:36to anybody except for us except that he
- 6:38said, "Look, we're going to talk with
- 6:40the SEC, going to talk with John Cohen."
- 6:41And and he was like, "I'm going to relay
- 6:42you guys the information." Um yeah,
- 6:46Patrick, I mean, it's going to be
- 6:47another one of these another one of
- 6:48these situations. Auburn has had to deal
- 6:50with far too many of these, but at the
- 6:52end of the day, like Stephen said, you
- 6:54shouldn't have been in that situation in
- 6:55the first place.
- 6:56>> And that's kind of now I guess to
- 6:57transition into the other 39 minutes and
- 6:5959 seconds of the game. I that that's
- 7:03kind of the thing is like you had a
- 7:0616-point lead in the second half at home
- 7:08and
- 7:09>> ended up like going down by
- 7:11>> 11
- 7:12>> 11. And so it's like a total swing. I
- 7:15mean, basically from I mean, just from
- 7:17my vantage point, Byron Brown comes out,
- 7:19everyone cheers, they introduce him,
- 7:20whatever. I get that video, I run in
- 7:23here to make the video, I come back out
- 7:24and like Auburn's 10-point lead is gone.
- 7:27I'm like, it's all heck is breaking
- 7:28loose. Uh, what? Like they were there,
- 7:30there was a point where they almost got
- 7:31up 20 and then they in one crazy
- 7:34transition, I mean, was it three
- 7:36different baskets&m got on?
- 7:37>> Yeah. So, so Texas A&M scored 15 points
- 7:40off of turnovers in the second half.
- 7:42Auburn had five turnovers for those
- 7:44doing the math at home. Three points per
- 7:46turnover. And that's what it was. It was
- 7:47four three-pointers. That was just like
- 7:50>> real threeon-one chaos. You just pop it
- 7:52to a guy in the corner and then an and
- 7:54one. And three of those happened in
- 7:56sequence all on the opposite end. Um and
- 7:59Steven Pearl said it after the game. He
- 8:00was like, "How long does the turnover
- 8:01take? Takes only one second to turn the
- 8:03ball over." He was like, "We let three
- 8:05seconds, those three turnovers change
- 8:07the entire game. Change the entire rest
- 8:09of the 40 minutes of basketball." Um,
- 8:11Texas&M runs that pressure.
- 8:13>> That's part of Bucky Ball is them
- 8:15running that uh that fullcourt pressure.
- 8:17Um, Auburn was able to break it pretty
- 8:18well in the first half because they were
- 8:19just pushing the ball down the floor.
- 8:21Um, but that really threw them out of
- 8:22sorts. And so, um, another just
- 8:24heartbreaking finish for this team. The
- 8:26turnovers obviously end up being what
- 8:27what evaporates that 16-point lead in
- 8:30the second half. Texas&M made, I
- 8:32believe, eight three-pointers in the
- 8:34second half. And so, that that that
- 8:35obviously was the reason why they were
- 8:37able to to make Auburn's lead disappear.
- 8:39>> Yeah. I think in this game it was kind
- 8:40of like we saw like the best and the
- 8:43worst of Auburn in so many different
- 8:45like waves and points like going into
- 8:47the half it was some of the best we've
- 8:49seen just at least in a while of just
- 8:51like I think of I the biggest react well
- 8:55there were a lot of big reactions from
- 8:56Stephen tonight for obvious reasons but
- 8:57like one of the biggest ones in the
- 8:59first half was they had a possession and
- 9:01they just kept passing it around and
- 9:03ended up getting a foul call and he was
- 9:05obviously really thrilled but it was
- 9:06like you were just seeing it culminate
- 9:08they build the big lead and then there's
- 9:09just this massive like all the turnovers
- 9:12happen the defense starts to fall&m
- 9:14scores 50 points in the second half but
- 9:17then again like we've seen they fought
- 9:19all the way back they
- 9:21>> did all the last second stuff and had a
- 9:23chance to win and so it's just this like
- 9:24crazy wave but at the end of the day
- 9:26you're still 0 and2 in the SEC. I'm I'm
- 9:28pulling up this Jason was texting me
- 9:31some some stuff to put in the story
- 9:32about it was a 31 to6 run for Texas&M
- 9:35that took just over six minutes gave up
- 9:3733 points in a 7minut stretch um
- 9:40allowing five points per minute during
- 9:43that stretch um overall I believe yeah
- 9:4531 to six run was was the extended run
- 9:47it took only 513 for Auburn's 16-point
- 9:50lead to you lost a 16-point lead in just
- 9:53over 5 minutes um and a lot of it again
- 9:55was just that flurry of turnovers and so
- 9:57um just an unreal just another a crazy
- 9:59finish. Auburn would like to get back to
- 10:01some normaly of course and uh and and
- 10:03and avoid these types of heartbreaking
- 10:05games but you know it's obviously Steven
- 10:07Pearl's job and this team's job now to
- 10:08to keep it together which they've done a
- 10:10good job of he I mean he said it after
- 10:11the game it's like they they've I mean
- 10:13from Bruce retiring on it's just been so
- 10:15much adversity for this team. This loss
- 10:18hurts because you know Texas&M is kind
- 10:20of where you are as well which is like a
- 10:22on the fringe tournament team. Mhm.
- 10:24>> You want to be able to beat those teams
- 10:26at home. And so Auburn starts 0 and2 in
- 10:27SC play first time since the co year
- 10:29>> and now Arkansas comes to town on
- 10:31Saturday. Really, really talented team
- 10:33that John Kalipari has. Um they play
- 10:35Miss on the road on on Wednesday. They
- 10:37already defeated Tennessee over the
- 10:38weekend. And so um that's a big one. You
- 10:40got to try to get that game Patrick.
- 10:42That would be that would be big for
- 10:43Auburn's momentum.
- 10:44>> It's like you can't start 0 and three,
- 10:45but it's also like Arkansas is going to
- 10:46be probably the best team of the three
- 10:47that you're about to play. And so it's,
- 10:50you know, and we talked at after the
- 10:51Queens game of like if you gamed it out
- 10:53these first two, it felt like a pretty
- 10:54reasonable start. You just had some
- 10:56really bizarre games, but how can you
- 10:58continue to improve? And I, you know, I
- 11:02I guess the thing that you could feel
- 11:03better about after this is, you know,
- 11:05for as much with football, we saw one
- 11:07bad mistake happens and the whole thing
- 11:08falls apart and that transcended over
- 11:10weeks. You know, Stephen said, as you
- 11:13alluded to that quote earlier of like,
- 11:15okay, that sucks, but we have to move
- 11:17on. Tomorrow is Arkansas. Like, it just
- 11:20And so, I think that's the thing is that
- 11:22you just have to
- 11:23>> you got to keep going because we're only
- 11:25in game two of the 18game SEC schedule.
- 11:28>> Yeah. Crazy start for the uh for the
- 11:29Tigers, but ultimately they are 0 and2.
- 11:31Um I can't even remember. Patrick, I
- 11:32can't remember what the final score was.
- 11:3490 to 88. Um Auburn Falls to Texas A&M
- 11:36tonight inside of Neville Arena. They
- 11:39just can't kick that Texas A&M
- 11:41>> Yeah.
- 11:41>> curse either, man. With a with a new
- 11:43coach, not only a new coach, a new coach
- 11:45that that that walks onto the floor.
- 11:48Like, is it a requirement of I was and
- 11:51I'm not a Buzz Williams defender by any
- 11:52means, but I think this was worse than
- 11:54Buzz ever was. People always used to get
- 11:56onto him.
- 11:56>> Yeah. Well, nothing will beat for me uh
- 11:58Jumbo being the 12th man on that Eugene
- 12:00Assant.
- 12:01>> Oh my gosh, I didn't even think about
- 12:02the connection.
- 12:03>> They just love to They just love to to
- 12:05get in on the uh on the action. Um,
- 12:06yeah, tough tough one tonight. Arkansas
- 12:095:00 p.m. Central time on Saturday back
- 12:11here at Neville Arena for Patrick
- 12:13Bingham. I am Nathan King. Be sure to
- 12:15head over to auburn undercover.com.
- 12:17There is, uh, a lot of stuff going on.
- 12:20Lots of transfer stuff. We're covering
- 12:22basketball. Um, we need to go get some
- 12:24sleep. And so, uh, again, it's a tough
- 12:26one for Auburn fans. Try to try to sleep
- 12:27it off, guys. And, uh, and and like
- 12:29Steven Pearl said, try to move on to
- 12:31Saturday. And, uh, should be a good game
- 12:32back here in Neville Arena. So, we'll
- 12:34catch you guys over at auburnunder.com.
