- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's a Friday, it's the 15th of
- 0:16November and happy Friday to your friends.
- 0:18I hope you're doing well. I hope that this week has been a
- 0:21good one for you and that here you are at the end of it all,
- 0:25feeling well, still in ship shape, ready to take on the
- 0:29weekend and maybe even have a bit of time to yourself as we
- 0:34do. Of course, on Fridays.
- 0:36We will read a Psalm today and well, there are only 150 Psalms
- 0:40in the book of Psalms. And today we're up to a Psalm
- 0:43140, which means there is only 10 more weeks as we read through
- 0:48the Psalms on a Friday. And then friends, we're going to
- 0:51dive into Proverbs on Fridays, which is going to be a whole lot
- 0:54of fun. We read through the first
- 0:55section of Proverbs earlier in the year, and now we are up to,
- 0:59well, we will be up to that section where we read those
- 1:03wonderful sayings of Solomon, but that's still to come today.
- 1:07Today we have got a classic Psalm of King David following
- 1:12the pattern that so many of his psalms do.
- 1:15This is a prayer for deliverance from enemies where he complaints
- 1:20about something going wrong, praise to God for help and that
- 1:24is confident that God will indeed send him help.
- 1:27And this is probably actually scratch that.
- 1:31This is definitely a fantastic model for us to use as we
- 1:35encounter challenges in our lives.
- 1:37Have a complaint, vent to God, ask for His help, and then move
- 1:41forward with assuredness that God is on our side.
- 1:45How good is that? Thank you, King David, We'll cop
- 1:48that. We'll take it on the shoulder
- 1:50and use it as an example. So this is a Psalm for the choir
- 1:54director, a Psalm of David, Psalm 140.
- 2:09Oh Lord, rescue me from evil people.
- 2:13Protect me from those who are violent, those who plot evil in
- 2:17their hearts and stir up trouble all day long.
- 2:20Their tongues sting like a snake.
- 2:23The venom of a Viper drips from their lips.
- 2:27Oh Lord, keep me out of the hands of the wicked.
- 2:31Protect me from those who are violent, for they are plotting
- 2:34against me. The proud have said a trap to
- 2:37catch me. They have stretched out a net.
- 2:41They have placed traps all along the way.
- 2:44I said to the Lord, You are my God.
- 2:48Listen, O Lord, to my cries for mercy.
- 2:52Our Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me, You
- 2:56protected me on the day of battle.
- 2:59Lord, do not let evil people have their way.
- 3:03Do not let their evil scheme succeed, or they will become
- 3:07proud. Let my enemies be destroyed by
- 3:12the very evil they have planned for me.
- 3:15Let burning coals fall down on their heads.
- 3:19Let them be thrown into the fire or into watery pits from which
- 3:23they can't escape. Don't let liars prosper here in
- 3:27our land. Cause great disaster to fall on
- 3:31the violent. But I know the Lord will help
- 3:35those they persecute. He will give justice to the
- 3:39poor. Surely righteous people are
- 3:42praising your name. The godly will live in your
- 3:46presence. Ah Lord, like King David, we too
- 4:00have things go wrong in our lives every day.
- 4:03Sure, we may not have enemies plotting to kill us, well
- 4:06hopefully we don't. But we do have things go wrong
- 4:10where our plans go sideways, people get hurt, relationships
- 4:15fall down. And Lord, we need your help.
- 4:20We need your Holy Spirit to change the way that we see the
- 4:25world and to give us eyes that see things in Your kingdom's
- 4:30way. We need your help to remind us
- 4:34that this is not our goal, but our goal lies beyond this life.
- 4:39In an eternity spent with You. Ah, we need your help every day.
- 4:45So just as King David cries out, Lord, may we always be quick to
- 4:50fall to our knees in prayer to You, to invite you into being a
- 4:55part of every day, the highs and the lows, the glorious moments
- 5:00and the hard challenges, because you are God of all of them and
- 5:06you are God of all of us. So we praise you now, our loving
- 5:10God, now and always. Amen.
