- 0:56And with that, I'd love to introduce,
- 0:58again, Stacey Larum.
- 1:00Congratulations on Semifinals.
- 1:02Thank you.
- 1:03Thanks for having me again.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:06I was telling some of the
- 1:07other guests this week,
- 1:09it's so much fun catching
- 1:11up with you guys year upon
- 1:13year upon year.
- 1:15Yeah, for sure.
- 1:16And it's crazy that it's
- 1:17already been a year.
- 1:19I know.
- 1:20I know.
- 1:22So I don't know where to start.
- 1:25I'm going to go with you
- 1:28keep improving year over year.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:33That's I mean, that's the plan.
- 1:35And it's been pretty
- 1:36exciting kind of to see my
- 1:38progress in a sport that keeps changing,
- 1:40too.
- 1:41So it's definitely been fun.
- 1:44And and not only are you improving,
- 1:46but other people are.
- 1:48But according to the leaderboard,
- 1:50you seem to be improving at
- 1:52a greater rate than people around you.
- 1:56Yeah, I mean, obviously that's the plan.
- 1:59Like, you know,
- 2:00you can only control what
- 2:03you are doing and kind of
- 2:05the work you're putting in
- 2:06and how you are
- 2:09what your result is in each workout.
- 2:11But, you know,
- 2:12I've made some changes this
- 2:13season to kind of try to
- 2:16ensure that I'm progressing
- 2:19in the areas where I have weaknesses.
- 2:22And I'm trying to kind of
- 2:23close those gaps and
- 2:25getting myself to be at a
- 2:26better spot on the leaderboard.
- 2:28And I think based on how
- 2:29things have been going this season,
- 2:31that things have been going pretty well.
- 2:34So just to quantify that,
- 2:35because I know you're like
- 2:37a stats person.
- 2:38You like to evaluate the numbers.
- 2:41When we first met you, like in 2022,
- 2:43you were in your region 127th.
- 2:44Yep.
- 2:44And then last year, 36th.
- 2:45And then this year, 12th.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:48So those are major leaps.
- 3:03Yeah,
- 3:04and I think a lot of it just has to
- 3:06do with my preparation for
- 3:09the season and just kind of
- 3:11my mentality going in and
- 3:13then just kind of some of
- 3:15the things along the way
- 3:16that I have changed.
- 3:18So back in 2022,
- 3:21the plan wasn't necessarily
- 3:22to go individual,
- 3:25but I kind of did the workouts on a whim.
- 3:29was on the outside looking
- 3:30in that year and I made it as a backfill.
- 3:34And then last season,
- 3:37definitely plan was to go individual.
- 3:40So tried my best and ended
- 3:43in 36th or 37th.
- 3:44I'm not sure what it was.
- 3:47But then after semifinals last year,
- 3:50I had been following
- 3:52Training Think Tank programming,
- 3:54which is kind of their
- 3:55general programming up
- 3:57until that point last year.
- 3:59And I was ready to make the
- 4:01change for a coach.
- 4:02And so I hired Perrin from
- 4:04Training Think Tank for
- 4:05individual programming.
- 4:07So that's what I've been
- 4:07working on this year.
- 4:09And so I've been with her.
- 4:11I worked with her prior to
- 4:13semifinals last year.
- 4:15So her and I had had a
- 4:17really good relationship.
- 4:18And so I had asked her if
- 4:19she would take me on as an athlete.
- 4:22So we've been working
- 4:22together for almost a year.
- 4:24And yeah,
- 4:25so that's where kind of that leap
- 4:26came from 36 to where I am now.
- 4:32So just to clarify,
- 4:34you've been following
- 4:35Training Think Tank for a while.
- 4:37Yeah.
- 4:37But it was just the general programming.
- 4:40Yeah,
- 4:40so they have a just they call it
- 4:42training thing to compete.
- 4:44I think I picked them up in
- 4:472020 around COVID.
- 4:49And so, yeah,
- 4:50so I've just been following
- 4:51their online programming,
- 4:54which which obviously has been great.
- 4:57It's definitely set me up for success.
- 5:00But I.
- 5:01I, as an athlete,
- 5:02definitely have some big
- 5:03holes that I needed to fill.
- 5:05And so I needed a little bit
- 5:06more individualized attention.
- 5:08And so Perrin's been able to
- 5:09provide that for me.
- 5:12And Perrin is still with
- 5:13Training Think Tank?
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:15So she's with Training Think Tank.
- 5:17So I'm still with them, love them.
- 5:18They're great, great training camp.
- 5:23That kind of makes sense to
- 5:24me because they are like the,
- 5:26they're kind of known as
- 5:28the thinkers in the space.
- 5:31And I know getting to know
- 5:32you over the last few years
- 5:33that that kind of matches
- 5:35up with what you are.
- 5:37Yeah,
- 5:38definitely they put out some great
- 5:39content and they're really
- 5:41in kind of like the weeds of everything.
- 5:44And her and I have had some
- 5:46really good conversations as well.
- 5:48Like you said,
- 5:48I'm definitely more of a
- 5:49numbers based person, more analytical.
- 5:53So what they value and what
- 5:56I value definitely align.
- 5:58So it's been a really good match.
- 6:00And even when I was on there
- 6:02more of the group programming,
- 6:04They were very open to questions.
- 6:07And if I had a question on something,
- 6:10or if you kind of want to
- 6:12know what the intention of
- 6:14like either a training
- 6:15block or a training piece was,
- 6:17they were very open to that.
- 6:18And I really liked that.
- 6:20So
- 6:24So that was one major change you've made.
- 6:26Any other little tweaks
- 6:28you've made just to sleep, nutrition,
- 6:32any of those types of
- 6:33things since last year?
- 6:35Yeah,
- 6:35so I've really tried to do everything
- 6:40I can.
- 6:43to make this season a success.
- 6:46So whether it be being more
- 6:48conscious of what I'm
- 6:50eating and how much I'm eating,
- 6:53to trying to go to bed a
- 6:55little bit earlier every night.
- 6:57I will be the first to say
- 6:58I'm definitely not perfect
- 7:00at any of those things.
- 7:02But just being more conscious.
- 7:03And I think my word of this season
- 7:06which is being like intention, like,
- 7:08what is my intention for each day?
- 7:11For each time I walk into the gym,
- 7:13because realistically,
- 7:15I don't have all day to
- 7:18dedicate to training, unfortunately.
- 7:21So every time I walk into the gym,
- 7:23I have to be intentional in
- 7:25what I'm doing.
- 7:26And I think just kind of
- 7:27that mindset has really
- 7:28helped me this season.
- 7:32It's funny you say that
- 7:33because I've talked to a
- 7:33lot of athletes over the
- 7:36course of these semifinal interviews,
- 7:38especially this year,
- 7:39that work full time.
- 7:41And it's almost like for their mindset,
- 7:46they need to work full time
- 7:48and to become efficient
- 7:50with their training day.
- 7:53And that's how their mind likes it.
- 7:57Yeah,
- 7:58I don't necessarily know that I love
- 8:03kind of my schedule.
- 8:04Like I won't be the first to say that.
- 8:06But I do appreciate the fact
- 8:09that I do have a very
- 8:12limited amount of time in
- 8:13my day to train.
- 8:15But I do know that I have to
- 8:18train in that amount of time.
- 8:20So it's kind of like a catch 22.
- 8:22Like you do become very
- 8:23efficient with the time that you have.
- 8:25But then sometimes other
- 8:27things take a back burner,
- 8:29whether it be some of my
- 8:31recovery isn't necessarily
- 8:33the greatest because I
- 8:34don't have the amount of
- 8:35time in between sessions.
- 8:39Or maybe like I get to bed a
- 8:42little bit later,
- 8:43kind of like the sleep
- 8:44thing is something that is
- 8:45an issue just because you kind of.
- 8:48are at work and then you
- 8:49train and then you have a
- 8:51million and one things on
- 8:52your to do list that you
- 8:53want to get done.
- 8:54And so it's just that balancing act.
- 8:57But I do agree that I do
- 8:59kind of thrive on staying busy.
- 9:04So I don't really know what
- 9:06I would do if I didn't have
- 9:07a job and have to work and
- 9:09kind of had all day to train.
- 9:12I think that would be a huge
- 9:13adjustment that I would
- 9:14have to get used to.
- 9:14I don't necessarily know if
- 9:15that would be a benefit.
- 9:18Yeah, I talked to somebody this week.
- 9:22Gosh, they're all blurring together.
- 9:25Where they quit their job
- 9:28and they then realized they
- 9:30had way too much time.
- 9:32So they went back to work
- 9:33part-time as a consultant
- 9:35just to try to fill some of that gap.
- 9:39Yeah,
- 9:39and I always joke with my husband
- 9:41about how, oh, I want to quit my job.
- 9:43But I also,
- 9:44I love my job and I love my
- 9:48career and I'm as
- 9:49passionate about my career
- 9:51as I am about CrossFit.
- 9:52And so for me personally,
- 9:55that just wouldn't be a
- 9:56life choice that I would want to make.
- 9:58And so I definitely complain
- 10:01about it to my husband,
- 10:02maybe more than I should,
- 10:04but it does provide me
- 10:06structure and structure is
- 10:08something that,
- 10:09I really appreciate and kind of need.
- 10:12And we've talked a lot over
- 10:13the last few years.
- 10:15For listeners who didn't
- 10:18hear your previous episodes, you have,
- 10:21from an outsider's perspective,
- 10:23what seems to be a super cool job.
- 10:25Yeah, I do have a super cool job.
- 10:28So I am a biomechanical
- 10:31engineer and I work for the
- 10:33Boston Red Sox.
- 10:35So I am fully remote,
- 10:37but I work with markerless
- 10:40motion capture data.
- 10:41So you can see where an
- 10:44individual is and how they move.
- 10:48And so from that information,
- 10:49you can get information
- 10:52Information on how their
- 10:53arms are bending and how
- 10:55fast they're moving.
- 10:56And so I analyze all the
- 10:58information for the Red Sox.
- 11:02And I think it may have been
- 11:03off the air last year.
- 11:04We talked a little bit about
- 11:06like you hear about it a lot in pitching,
- 11:09but I think you were
- 11:09telling me it's it's every
- 11:11aspect of baseball.
- 11:13Yeah,
- 11:14so right now they're really focusing
- 11:16on pitching and batting,
- 11:18but definitely this is more
- 11:20of a new technology.
- 11:22As the technology improves,
- 11:25they're going to want it
- 11:26for all the players on the field,
- 11:28but we're focusing on
- 11:29pitching and batting right now.
- 11:33So this is kind of a cool transition is –
- 11:37last year at semis you
- 11:39competed against hannah
- 11:40black did you know that she
- 11:42is a biomechanical engineer
- 11:44I did know that and we
- 11:46actually someone I work
- 11:47with actually went to
- 11:48college with her so it's a
- 11:50small world yeah and her
- 11:53study at college was uh looking at isabel
- 11:59with motion capture and
- 12:02showing how the body breaks
- 12:05down over the 30 reps of Isabel.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:09I mean, what can I say?
- 12:10People who are in
- 12:10biomechanics are very cool.
- 12:15Well,
- 12:15what I find cool too is last year at
- 12:18semis,
- 12:20there was this pack like in
- 12:22the middle teens with you
- 12:24and her and Emily white who
- 12:27won an event at semis last year.
- 12:30Um,
- 12:32but finished just outside of those game
- 12:34spots.
- 12:36What do people like you and
- 12:38them need to do to take that next step?
- 12:42Cause you're winning events.
- 12:43You're hitting home runs.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:46Yeah.
- 12:46So, um,
- 12:48For me last year,
- 12:49I think that if you were to
- 12:51look at the programming and
- 12:54kind of my places on the leaderboard,
- 12:56I had some good finishes.
- 12:59I mean, I won an event.
- 13:01I did well in another one.
- 13:04I had some middle of the pack ones,
- 13:07but then I really,
- 13:09really did not do well on two events.
- 13:12And those were really
- 13:14dropped me down the leaderboard.
- 13:18for me that was just kind of
- 13:20a wake-up call not that I
- 13:21didn't know kind of I had
- 13:22these weaknesses but it was
- 13:23really a wake-up call um
- 13:26that I needed to kind of
- 13:28close some of these gaps and
- 13:31For me,
- 13:33just gymnastics are just something
- 13:34that does not come naturally to me.
- 13:36And so I know that I'm never
- 13:38going to be winning gymnastics events,
- 13:40but I needed to figure out
- 13:41a way to kind of close the
- 13:42gap between me and other
- 13:44people in those events.
- 13:45And so that is something
- 13:47that Perrin has really helped me with.
- 13:50And through Perrin and Training Think Tank,
- 13:53she partnered me up with Mia,
- 13:54who's also a coach at
- 13:56Training Think Tank.
- 13:58And all off season, I probably spent
- 14:02More than half of my
- 14:03training just on gymnastics drills,
- 14:06just positioning drills,
- 14:10breaking down each movement.
- 14:12And for me specifically,
- 14:15that's something that I
- 14:16needed to do to kind of
- 14:18close that gap and
- 14:19hopefully get me on the
- 14:20right side of the line this year.
- 14:23So I don't know if you can see,
- 14:24but I pulled up our
- 14:25headline from last year
- 14:28where you won event one.
- 14:31Yep.
- 14:32So you came out of the gates on fire.
- 14:34Yeah.
- 14:37On paper, I mean,
- 14:38that is an event that I...
- 14:41really really like um I
- 14:45consider myself to be good
- 14:47at low skill grunt work
- 14:48workouts um and that is a
- 14:50low skill grunt work
- 14:51workout um definitely
- 14:53wasn't expecting to win it
- 14:55um but you know I think that
- 15:00it just kind of,
- 15:01the cards kind of fell the right way.
- 15:03And luckily for me at the event,
- 15:06maybe not necessarily good in training,
- 15:10our sled pulls at our gym are very,
- 15:12very hard.
- 15:14Our floor gets really, when it gets humid,
- 15:16it gets really sticky.
- 15:18And so when I was pulling
- 15:19that sled in practice, it was,
- 15:23I couldn't even move it
- 15:24sometimes with the weight
- 15:25that I had on there.
- 15:26And so I think just kind of,
- 15:29making that a little harder
- 15:30in training and then going
- 15:32onto the floor and even
- 15:33though it was hard and it
- 15:35felt easier for me just
- 15:37because of the
- 15:38circumstances um before so
- 15:42so I i have two two ways to
- 15:47go here and um hopefully I
- 15:49remember to go back to the other one
- 15:53how much more comfortable do
- 15:54you feel today doing
- 15:57gymnastics moves than you
- 15:58did in pasadena last year
- 16:02Yeah, so I definitely feel better.
- 16:05I'm not going to sit here
- 16:07and say that it's definitely,
- 16:09I'm going to put it in a
- 16:10strength category for me,
- 16:13but I feel more confident,
- 16:16which I think is important.
- 16:17And I also have realized or learned how to
- 16:25approach different workouts
- 16:26with gymnastics in them.
- 16:29So for me personally,
- 16:31if I look at a workout,
- 16:32I'm going to have to have a
- 16:34breaking strategy for
- 16:36different movements that
- 16:37might look different than
- 16:38someone who is extremely
- 16:39efficient at the workout.
- 16:41So I have to look at something and say,
- 16:45this is what I can do to
- 16:46get me from A to B the
- 16:48fastest and stick to my plan.
- 16:52I am a very analytical person,
- 16:54but when I work out,
- 16:55I tend to kind of go in
- 16:56guns blazing and try and hold on.
- 16:59And that's just not the
- 17:01right method for me sometimes.
- 17:02And so confidence is there,
- 17:06but also kind of being
- 17:08smart at approaching things
- 17:09as well is something that I've learned.
- 17:13So that,
- 17:14so that brings me back to the next
- 17:16part of the question I wanted to ask.
- 17:18And that is the events were released,
- 17:21leaked, released early.
- 17:24You got to,
- 17:24you got to get a good look at
- 17:26them hopefully by today.
- 17:27Yep.
- 17:28Um,
- 17:30this year it seems like the workouts
- 17:32are more balanced.
- 17:35across the board where last
- 17:37year there was like a full
- 17:39gymnastics workout a full
- 17:41strength workout this year
- 17:43it seems like they put a
- 17:44little bit of everything in
- 17:45every workout except for
- 17:47maybe the snatch ladder
- 17:50yeah um definitely looking
- 17:53at this year's they seem to be I mean
- 17:58I don't want to use the word
- 17:59more classic CrossFit,
- 18:01but other than the snatch workout,
- 18:05like you said,
- 18:06everything kind of has a
- 18:09little bit of everything,
- 18:10which I was very excited to see.
- 18:13I think that that kind of
- 18:16plays a little bit more to my strengths.
- 18:17But yeah, I mean,
- 18:20the workouts got released
- 18:20and I really like them and
- 18:21I'm really excited to do them.
- 18:24there one in particular you
- 18:26look at and you go that's
- 18:27that's where I need to make
- 18:29some hay yeah I mean I i
- 18:34really I'm excited for the
- 18:36first one um so the running
- 18:38and the clean and jerk one
- 18:39I think that kind of lands
- 18:41in my wheelhouse um I'm
- 18:42also pretty excited for the
- 18:44snatch ladder um and then
- 18:47just the um the second one
- 18:50as well so the double
- 18:51unders with the front squats um
- 18:55But really all of them I
- 18:57have to look at and say I
- 18:58need to do as best as I can
- 19:00in each one to set myself
- 19:02up to make it to the games.
- 19:06So are you to a place yet
- 19:09where you look at an event
- 19:11and see the gymnastics element and you go,
- 19:14I'm excited to see where I'm at?
- 19:16Or do you need to get a
- 19:17little further for you to
- 19:19actually be excited about that?
- 19:22Yeah, so I...
- 19:25I wouldn't necessarily say
- 19:26that I look at a workout
- 19:27and be excited about gymnastics,
- 19:30but I am at a point now
- 19:32where I can look at a
- 19:33workout and not be
- 19:36discouraged by it or not be
- 19:39intimidated by the volume
- 19:42of gymnastics that's in there.
- 19:43I'm to a point where I can...
- 19:46kind of turn off the emotion and just say,
- 19:50this is what I have to do.
- 19:51This is the way that I have
- 19:55to break it up for me to
- 19:58get my best result,
- 19:59which I think is for me is
- 20:01a good place to be right now.
- 20:04So building on that,
- 20:08does that – because you're
- 20:09less discouraged,
- 20:10does the converse become
- 20:12true that you are now more
- 20:14confident in your abilities
- 20:16going into an event like this?
- 20:19Yeah, for sure.
- 20:21I think confidence and I
- 20:24think if you wasn't to my –
- 20:26maybe my podcast from 2022
- 20:28to last year to now,
- 20:31confidence in my abilities
- 20:32is something that has also –
- 20:34kind of grown throughout these years.
- 20:38And I think that I have
- 20:41learned that my emotions to
- 20:45a workout or to a situation
- 20:47really can impact my result.
- 20:49And so this year was really
- 20:53a big stepping stone into kind of
- 20:56learning to trust myself and
- 20:57learning to have that
- 20:58confidence and kind of
- 20:59getting rid of some of that
- 21:01imposter syndrome of
- 21:03knowing that I do belong on
- 21:04the floor and that my
- 21:06abilities have shown that I
- 21:09do belong there.
- 21:11And yeah,
- 21:11I'm excited to step on the floor
- 21:12this year and kind of show where I'm at.
- 21:18It's so cool to see that
- 21:19growth year upon year.
- 21:21Yep.
- 21:22And why I love this series that we do.
- 21:25Because, I mean,
- 21:26you guys work your asses off every year.
- 21:29And it's so cool for you to
- 21:32get a chance to talk about
- 21:33that and to see...
- 21:39And the growth in like not,
- 21:43and this is taking nothing away from you,
- 21:45the athlete,
- 21:46but like your Alex Kazans and
- 21:47your Ariel Lowens and who
- 21:49have kind of established themselves,
- 21:51they don't see big jumps in growth.
- 21:54But you guys can.
- 21:57Like I've watched you jump
- 21:59from a backfill to someone
- 22:02who has a real shot at a
- 22:03games ticket this year.
- 22:06And it's super fun for me.
- 22:10Yeah,
- 22:11it's I'm glad it's fun for you
- 22:13because it's definitely is fun for me,
- 22:14too.
- 22:14And I think that that's the
- 22:16cool thing about CrossFit as well,
- 22:18is that the sport is ever
- 22:22changing and just some
- 22:24people can kind of continue and grow and.
- 22:31and keep adapting to that change.
- 22:35And I think just kind of the
- 22:37way that I approach the
- 22:38sport and my training, and like I said,
- 22:41the changes that I've made
- 22:42have helped me kind of grow
- 22:44along with the sport and
- 22:45kind of catapult me up to where I am.
- 22:48And yeah,
- 22:50I last year wouldn't have thought
- 22:52about talking about
- 22:53qualifying for the games.
- 22:55But this year that's,
- 22:56that's definitely my goal.
- 22:57And that's my intention as I
- 22:59step out on the floor at semis.
- 23:02That's freaking awesome.
- 23:04And you get to do it in a
- 23:06location that is so iconic
- 23:09in the CrossFit world.
- 23:12Yeah.
- 23:14It's funny that I... So I
- 23:15joined CrossFit in 2019.
- 23:20So I didn't know anything
- 23:21about CrossFit before 2019.
- 23:23I kind of just...
- 23:26didn't know about the sport.
- 23:27So it's definitely before I
- 23:30had interest in CrossFit,
- 23:32but just kind of looking
- 23:33back and watching the
- 23:34videos of what's going on in Carson.
- 23:37I mean, you can't,
- 23:39it's hard not to get chills
- 23:41looking at that,
- 23:42even though I wasn't
- 23:44watching it at the time.
- 23:45But yeah,
- 23:46I'm excited to compete there for sure.
- 23:48Have you gone back and
- 23:49watched any of the documentaries?
- 23:51Not yet.
- 23:51Just, I've just watched some of the events,
- 23:53but definitely have to
- 23:54watch some documentaries as well.
- 23:55You know, I've tried to, um,
- 23:58this season limit some of
- 24:00my CrossFit consumption,
- 24:03just CrossFit media consumption.
- 24:05Just for me,
- 24:06I feel like that was a mental
- 24:10headspace thing that I had
- 24:11to kind of eliminate this season,
- 24:14but I think I can watch a documentary.
- 24:19Okay.
- 24:19Well, that hurts my heart.
- 24:21But anyway... I know.
- 24:22You know,
- 24:23I love... I always listen to your
- 24:25podcast when I would walk my dogs.
- 24:29But I just think that there
- 24:31was no need for me to
- 24:34consume that much content.
- 24:38Especially just kind of like the...
- 24:42not necessarily like the
- 24:43news about CrossFit,
- 24:46but more of the drama side of CrossFit.
- 24:48It just wasn't doing me good emotionally.
- 24:53I was going to dive in a little, and I was,
- 24:54I'm just joking.
- 24:55Like I understand you have
- 24:57to do what's best for you.
- 24:59Um, what, so it wasn't a comparison thing.
- 25:03It was more of,
- 25:05you didn't want to get
- 25:06caught up in the drama, right?
- 25:08I think it was a little bit of both.
- 25:11Um, I just think, yeah, that just,
- 25:16I have learned to kind of look at, um,
- 25:22CrossFit and the events as, um,
- 25:25like talking about the
- 25:26workouts for semifinals,
- 25:27like whether or not I love
- 25:30them or I hate them, I have to do them.
- 25:33Um,
- 25:34and so there's no need for me to really,
- 25:38Um,
- 25:38worry about when they were released or
- 25:41how they were released.
- 25:42Like at the end of the day,
- 25:43I have to do them.
- 25:44And so kind of listening to
- 25:47just CrossFit has drama.
- 25:51Um, and listening to that,
- 25:52it just wasn't doing me any
- 25:58good worrying about things
- 25:59that I couldn't control.
- 26:00because what I can control
- 26:02is these are the workouts
- 26:04and I have to do them.
- 26:05And so I've just tried to
- 26:07eliminate just listening to
- 26:10a lot of the other chatter
- 26:12about the sport.
- 26:15And with that though,
- 26:16you hear about what other
- 26:17athletes are doing.
- 26:19And at the end of the day too,
- 26:22I can only do what I can
- 26:24with the time that I have.
- 26:25And so,
- 26:27trying to compare to someone
- 26:29who maybe has a little bit
- 26:30more time or their training
- 26:32structure looks different
- 26:33just because of their needs
- 26:35um also wasn't benefiting
- 26:37me so I'm going to take
- 26:42this down a weird road but
- 26:43so you know training think
- 26:44tank they're your group
- 26:45right they're your your
- 26:47core and they have their own media
- 26:50Do you feel a need to have
- 26:53to take in some of that
- 26:55because they're the people
- 26:56who are kind of running what you do?
- 26:59Or even that can get down
- 27:01into a rabbit hole you
- 27:02don't want to go right now?
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:04So they, they put out podcasts.
- 27:06Um, and one of them,
- 27:08which I did listen to was just kind of,
- 27:10it was before quarterfinals
- 27:12and just kind of what your
- 27:13mental and emotional approach should be,
- 27:16um, going into quarterfinals.
- 27:17So I'll listen to those.
- 27:20Um,
- 27:20but just some of like the media about
- 27:23like,
- 27:24training day recaps or
- 27:27recaps of quarterfinals,
- 27:29whether it's just kind of
- 27:30just like reviewing people's workouts.
- 27:32It's just something that I
- 27:33don't feel like I need to
- 27:35consume right now.
- 27:36I mean,
- 27:38they put out a ton of great content,
- 27:40but unless I feel like it's
- 27:41something that will educate
- 27:43me or help benefit me for semis,
- 27:48I choose just not to listen to it.
- 27:52so last drama question um
- 27:56quarterfinals all the
- 27:58penalties start coming out
- 27:59yep there's no way to avoid
- 28:02that that is going on
- 28:04whether you're listening to
- 28:05media or not it what was
- 28:08going through your head as
- 28:09those are being levied yeah
- 28:14um so the funny thing
- 28:17though is that so during
- 28:18quarterfinals I actually
- 28:19deleted instagram
- 28:21during quarterfinals and it was the best.
- 28:26I had no idea what anyone was doing.
- 28:28I had no idea about anything.
- 28:33And I feel like I had a ton
- 28:34of mental clarity.
- 28:35And so the leaderboard was
- 28:37released Monday night and I
- 28:39saw where I was and I was
- 28:41feeling pretty confident.
- 28:42And so
- 28:43Of course I download Instagram back.
- 28:46Um,
- 28:47and then Wednesday night on Instagram
- 28:48was when I found out all of
- 28:50the penalties were being
- 28:50assessed and my video did
- 28:54not get reviewed until Friday morning.
- 28:58Um, so I had.
- 29:01I don't even know how many
- 29:02times I checked my email
- 29:04between Wednesday night and
- 29:06Friday morning.
- 29:08And so there's another,
- 29:10so actually at our gym,
- 29:12we have two other
- 29:14individuals who qualified for semifinals.
- 29:17Um,
- 29:17and they were trying to plan hotels and
- 29:20flights.
- 29:21And I just told him, I was like,
- 29:23I don't even know if I'm going, like,
- 29:26I can't book any of this.
- 29:29Um, so I was very, it was very,
- 29:30very stressed,
- 29:31not because I was concerned with, um,
- 29:36my movement quality necessarily.
- 29:41But I was just concerned
- 29:43that so many people were
- 29:44getting penalized that it
- 29:46just seemed like they were
- 29:46scrutinizing that workout
- 29:51to a degree that maybe we
- 29:53haven't seen before.
- 29:55So fortunately,
- 29:57my workout came through and
- 29:59I was able to kind of
- 30:03have a sigh of relief.
- 30:04But for those 36 hours,
- 30:07it was miserable waiting.
- 30:12Well, first,
- 30:13thank you for reloading Instagram,
- 30:15or I wouldn't have had a
- 30:16way to get in touch with
- 30:17you to invite you on.
- 30:20Second, I sent out a bunch of invites.
- 30:23I think I sent yours on Tuesday.
- 30:24Yeah.
- 30:26Right.
- 30:27So I sent a bunch out and
- 30:29then the penalty started
- 30:30coming Wednesday and I'd already booked
- 30:33I hadn't booked you yet,
- 30:34but I had booked a bunch of
- 30:35people and the people I
- 30:37booked started getting
- 30:38penalties and falling out of the top 40.
- 30:42And I was like, what am I going to do?
- 30:47And some of them, I just said, Hey,
- 30:49we're going to postpone.
- 30:51You're going through an
- 30:52appeal process and I don't
- 30:53want you to talk on my show
- 30:56and have it affect your appeal.
- 30:59So we just kind of took a step back,
- 31:01but I've learned a very
- 31:03valuable lesson to not
- 31:05start in fighting until the
- 31:07leaderboards final.
- 31:08Yeah.
- 31:09I think I responded to you
- 31:12after I had gotten my
- 31:15review for workout one,
- 31:17which even then could have
- 31:19been premature too.
- 31:20Right.
- 31:20Because at that point we
- 31:21didn't know what the rest
- 31:24of the review process was
- 31:25going to look like.
- 31:26um but yes I was very not
- 31:29that I have a big instagram
- 31:31presence anyways with
- 31:32crossfit I i don't just in
- 31:34general I don't post a lot
- 31:35of stuff um but like our
- 31:38gym yeah I don't our gym on
- 31:41monday um after the
- 31:44leaderboard was finalized
- 31:45sent out a post saying that
- 31:47these are the semi-final um
- 31:51qualifiers and it just kind
- 31:52of felt like it was just bad luck.
- 31:55Like I didn't want,
- 31:56I didn't really repost anything.
- 31:58Like I just didn't, I didn't want to,
- 32:01at that point there was,
- 32:02there wasn't even penalties coming out,
- 32:04but at that point I just
- 32:05didn't want to jinx anything.
- 32:07And then, and then yeah,
- 32:09Wednesday came around and
- 32:11people were getting penalized.
- 32:12And so, yeah,
- 32:14so fortunately I made it through,
- 32:16but yeah,
- 32:18this year definitely looks a
- 32:19little different.
- 32:20Yeah, I got a lot of responses that said,
- 32:23hey,
- 32:23I don't want to book until it's final
- 32:25because I don't want to jinx anything.
- 32:27I bet you I get that response seven times.
- 32:34And then you wrote me,
- 32:35but I didn't know you were
- 32:36validated because I can't see that stuff.
- 32:39And then I was like, oh,
- 32:41I shouldn't finally book
- 32:42her until I know for sure on Monday.
- 32:45Well, yeah.
- 32:46And I mean, when I wrote you back,
- 32:48not all of my workouts had
- 32:49been validated.
- 32:50So, I mean,
- 32:51they could have gone through
- 32:52another workout and assessed penalties.
- 32:55So yeah, it was, it was smart.
- 32:58I definitely,
- 33:00there was a sigh of relief
- 33:01when I got my workout one score,
- 33:03but then I was still very,
- 33:05very nervous from,
- 33:06I saw two scores that
- 33:08needed to be validated at that point.
- 33:09And I definitely did not
- 33:11breathe a sigh of relief until
- 33:13three and four got validated,
- 33:15which I think was on Sunday.
- 33:17Yeah, it's funny.
- 33:20So the leaderboard goes
- 33:22final Monday night.
- 33:23I get a text from Emily Rolfe going,
- 33:26it's final?
- 33:28And I was like, I don't work for CrossFit.
- 33:30I just know what they posted.
- 33:32And she's like,
- 33:33they never validated my workout four.
- 33:38yeah um so I did get all of
- 33:40my scores validated um I
- 33:42think my third and fourth
- 33:45workout were validated
- 33:46sunday morning within like
- 33:47two minutes of each other
- 33:49um so yeah it is what it is
- 33:54but yeah my guess is they
- 33:57didn't really look at three
- 33:58and four just to make sure
- 34:00kind of like people had
- 34:01videos and that they were
- 34:03legit and moved on
- 34:06that's kind of what I am thinking.
- 34:08But again, I, I have no idea.
- 34:11All I know is that I got
- 34:12those four green check marks.
- 34:14And at the end of the day,
- 34:15I was on the right side of the line.
- 34:17So.
- 34:19Yeah.
- 34:20Well,
- 34:20I could not be more excited for you
- 34:22and I'm so glad you were
- 34:23able to come on again this year.
- 34:25Um, I wish you all the luck in the world.
- 34:29I I'm rooting for you to get
- 34:31your first ever games appearance.
- 34:33Thank you.
- 34:34Are you coming to Carson?
- 34:36don't know okay it's um I
- 34:39didn't get approved I still
- 34:41don't have it in writing I
- 34:43just got a verbal approval
- 34:44on monday and flights have
- 34:47not been affordable um at
- 34:51this late juncture so I'm
- 34:53gonna keep looking and if I
- 34:54can swing it somehow I will
- 34:57um but it's this has been a
- 35:00weird season for me and my family anyway
- 35:03this just may be a year I
- 35:04have to kind of take a step
- 35:06back yeah and then just get
- 35:08back into it next year but
- 35:09I'm I've never been to
- 35:11carson I've never been to
- 35:12the tennis stadium I'd
- 35:13really love to go yeah well
- 35:16I hope if it works for you
- 35:17you can make it I'd
- 35:18definitely be excited to
- 35:19see you there but yeah
- 35:21definitely understand but
- 35:23so are you gonna are you
- 35:24gonna delete your instagram
- 35:25for the weekend um
- 35:28Maybe.
- 35:29I don't know.
- 35:30It was very nice.
- 35:32Not that I, like I said, I rarely post,
- 35:35but I just feel like I'm on
- 35:37it way too much.
- 35:39And it might be the way to go.
- 35:44Well,
- 35:44the reason I ask is if I can't make it,
- 35:46we're still going to cover it from here.
- 35:49And we're going to be
- 35:49reaching out to people to
- 35:51ask them how their days
- 35:51went or how events went.
- 35:54And I'd love to be able to
- 35:56reach out to you.
- 35:57But I understand if you have to delete it.
- 36:00You can reach out to me.
- 36:01Maybe I'll have my husband
- 36:02to be my social media
- 36:03manager for the weekend.
- 36:05Okay.
- 36:06He can filter my content.
- 36:08And you don't get your phone
- 36:09until Sunday evening.
- 36:11Right.
- 36:14Yeah.
- 36:15Okay.
- 36:16Well, that sounds awesome.
- 36:17Well, Stacy, again, I wish you the best.
- 36:21Um,
- 36:21good luck in Carson and thank you as
- 36:23always for coming on the show.
- 36:25Yeah.
- 36:25Thanks for having me.
- 36:26It's been fun.
- 36:28Yeah.
- 36:28And thank you for all the listeners.
- 36:30Uh,
- 36:30we will see everybody next time on the
- 36:32Clydesdale media podcast
- 36:34featuring the athletes of
- 36:36North American semifinals.
- 36:38Bye guys.
