- 0:40Speaker 2: I mean, I haven't missed a movie since November, so

- 1:08Speaker 1: of my current favorites is the how to make iced
- 1:11Speaker 1: Coffee at Home posts, because I feel like it was
- 1:14Speaker 1: a real revelation when I realized it didn't have to
- 1:16Speaker 1: be terrible made at home. So if you're like me
- 1:18Speaker 1: and you'd like to try that, I've got a lot

- 2:02Speaker 2: I know it's crazy, I kind of love it.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So this week's movie is Playing Cupid, and Wendy do
- 2:10Speaker 1: you have a synopsis of this movie?
- 2:12Speaker 2: I certainly do a you know, you ask me every
- 2:16Speaker 2: time and I'm never ready for it, but here it comes.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It is Playing Cupid. A modern day Emma finds David
- 2:24Speaker 2: Martinez being secretly set up with his daughter's teacher. When
- 2:27Speaker 2: the young girl begins a matchmaking business for a school project.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Hey, I think that's a pretty good synopsis.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Oh tell me why.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Because the synopsis suggests that the daughter sets up the
- 2:47Speaker 2: dad and the teacher, and that doesn't really happen.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yes, they just she sends them the secret admirer.
- 2:54Speaker 2: No no, no, no, oh no.
- 3:00Speaker 1: She didn't send them secret aquier. No.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But that's not matchmaking.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Well how is it not matchmaking? She's like behind the
- 3:10Speaker 1: scenes trying to get them together. That's like the whole
- 3:12Speaker 1: like Emma storyline there, where she's like trying to make
- 3:16Speaker 1: things happen. She's not saying, hey Joe, meet Susie. You
- 3:19Speaker 1: guys should date. She's trying to like push them together
- 3:22Speaker 1: so they think it's their own idea. I have so
- 3:26Speaker 1: many story Kattie Stanger.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yes, I don't watch that show. Of course I did,
- 3:37Speaker 2: Of course I did.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I just heard her on in an interview the other day.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm surprised to hear she's still in the game.
- 3:43Speaker 2: She's still matchmaking, just not on reality TV.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Correct.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Interesting what happened to her show? What was that called Matchmaker?
- 3:52Speaker 1: I think it was called The Millionaire Matchmaker.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's it. That's it. That's it. I wonder why they
- 3:57Speaker 2: canceled that show. Who knows?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Okay, let's jump to first impressions. No news and notes.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Google didn't give me a whole ton of news and
- 4:10Speaker 2: notes on this movie.
- 4:12Speaker 1: No, Like many, many, many, many many others, it was
- 4:16Speaker 1: filmed in Canada.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yep.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It was based on the novel Playing Cupid by Jenny Meyerhoff. However,
- 4:25Speaker 1: the synopsis of that novel leads me to believe that
- 4:28Speaker 1: the story is more about Clara's storyline and perhaps the
- 4:32Speaker 1: others are incidental. I did nothing more than look at
- 4:36Speaker 1: the Amazon synopsis, but the image on the cover, I
- 4:39Speaker 1: kind of thought it was like a tween teen focused
- 4:43Speaker 1: novel that was then adapted for Hallmark. It is published
- 4:49Speaker 1: under the Hallmark imprint.
- 4:53Speaker 2: No no, no, no, no, no, no, no, Scholastic. It has
- 4:56Speaker 2: a Hallmark Channel now an original movie like decal on
- 5:01Speaker 2: the front of it. All right, but it is a
- 5:04Speaker 2: Scholastic book, which means that it's its audience is tweens
- 5:11Speaker 2: and teens.
- 5:12Speaker 1: No, I agree with that. And Jenny Meyerhoff did get
- 5:15Speaker 1: a writing credit on this movie, along with Nina Wineman,
- 5:17Speaker 1: who is a prolific Hallmark writer as well.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Okay, so I just have This is what makes me like,
- 5:29Speaker 2: not irritated, but annoyed when they take like, and I
- 5:33Speaker 2: know you say this happens all time, but they take
- 5:35Speaker 2: up book and it took like a dash of the book,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you know, because this book is obviously more about Clara's storyline,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but the movie is is obviously centraled around the budding
- 5:48Speaker 2: relationship between David and carry. So it's like they took
- 5:52Speaker 2: a dash of Playing Cupid the book, and a dash
- 5:57Speaker 2: of Emma and a whatever and mixed it all up
- 6:01Speaker 2: in the Hallmark blender.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I think it's very very loosely based on the book.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I mean, they do have the same character names, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: other than that, I would agree they just took inspiration
- 6:12Speaker 1: from it and then adapted it to be hallmarky. It
- 6:16Speaker 1: doesn't honestly bother me. I don't like it when they
- 6:21Speaker 1: say it's now a Hallmark original movie because it's not
- 6:24Speaker 1: really right. It's not like you're watching you know what.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I love the Jenny haun To All the Boys I
- 6:29Speaker 1: loved before a series where those are adaptations of the books. Like, yes,
- 6:33Speaker 1: there's some creative license taken in the movies, but they're
- 6:37Speaker 1: very true to the books, I would say that's not
- 6:39Speaker 1: the case here. And as a reader who then watches movies,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I find it really hard sometimes to watch a movie
- 6:45Speaker 1: of a book I've read, because I'm like, wait, the
- 6:47Speaker 1: whole time, I'm like.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Was that how it was in the book?
- 6:49Speaker 1: Was that how it was in the book? And I
- 6:50Speaker 1: can't focus on the movie itself, So I understand what
- 6:54Speaker 1: you're saying well.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And the other thing, too, is I wonder if these
- 7:00Speaker 2: characters of David and Carey exist in that book. I
- 7:04Speaker 2: doubt they do. I don't know. I think I'm more
- 7:07Speaker 2: interested in watching an adaptation of the book rather than
- 7:13Speaker 2: a inspired by.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked Clara's storyline a little bit better. I
- 7:21Speaker 1: kind of liked the younger actors and their cute little
- 7:24Speaker 1: like matchmaking business. When I was in middle school, we
- 7:28Speaker 1: had I wish I could remember what it was called,
- 7:30Speaker 1: but there was like you filled out a survey and
- 7:34Speaker 1: then you were given like your compatibility matches? What done
- 7:38Speaker 1: around valid and Day? Yes, it was done around Valentine's Day.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And I can remember like being part of the team
- 7:46Speaker 1: that it was seventh and eighth grade middle school, and
- 7:48Speaker 1: I was so inappropriate. Thinking back, it is so weird.
- 7:52Speaker 1: I can't remember what we called it, but I know
- 7:54Speaker 1: that it was run by the Pep Club.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I heard that a long time.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You know, we wore like cheer skirts, even though for
- 8:06Speaker 1: no good reason. Yeah, and we I can remember like
- 8:11Speaker 1: being in putting the information because obviously it wasn't on
- 8:13Speaker 1: a computer, like, we didn't have the ability to collect
- 8:16Speaker 1: Google forms. So people filled out surveys and we input
- 8:21Speaker 1: them all and then their compatibility was spit. I don't know, honestly,
- 8:26Speaker 1: my memory is big, but I do know that it happened.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And uh, it seems odd that that was allowed it
- 8:32Speaker 1: in middle school. IM pretty sure it would not be
- 8:33Speaker 1: allowed down.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds like a carnival game. It doesn't sound like,
- 8:38Speaker 2: you know, like a legitimate middle school project. So weird.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It was like a fundraiser.
- 8:44Speaker 1: It was like you pay, you know, to get your matches.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Cool anyway, I goes so wrong, don't you think so?
- 8:52Speaker 1: And honestly thinking about it now, I'm like, God, I
- 8:55Speaker 1: would have secondhand embarrassment for imagining myself on someone's list
- 8:59Speaker 1: and them thinking like, oh I don't want to match
- 9:01Speaker 1: with her totally.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Ye oh terrible m M fire That teacher. Whose ever
- 9:08Speaker 2: I did that one? Just kidding.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Anyway, this movie claims to be a remake of Emma.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Wendy apparently has some issues with that statement.
- 9:20Speaker 2: But because the story is not about Clara, the story
- 9:24Speaker 2: is about David and Carrie's I agree.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But I do think she features pretty heavily. You know
- 9:29Speaker 1: a lot of these movies that have kids in them,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I think she gets a bigger role than we see
- 9:33Speaker 1: many of the other movies that have kids. She's not incidental.
- 9:36Speaker 1: She does have a fully fleshed out storyline. I think, yes, agree, agree.
- 9:43Speaker 1: I maybe read Emma in high school, but I know
- 9:48Speaker 1: many adult women have a strong affinity for Jane Austen novels,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and I haven't read any of them since I was
- 9:53Speaker 1: in high school, and I'm starting to feel like maybe
- 9:54Speaker 1: I should. But they remade the movie Emma in twenty twenty,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and it starts Na Taylor Joy, who was the star
- 10:01Speaker 1: of The Queen's Gambit, which makes me want to rewatch
- 10:04Speaker 1: it because I find her so fascinating to watch.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Hang on just a second, I think she was nominated
- 10:09Speaker 2: for a Golden Globe for that Emma. Oh, let me
- 10:12Speaker 2: just look here, because I think she was nominated for
- 10:14Speaker 2: both The Queen's Gambit and Emma Anything that she had.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Such a good Golden Globes. While you're doing that, there's
- 10:21Speaker 1: a great episode of the Popcast that talks about the
- 10:22Speaker 1: Golden Globes and why they're actually kind of garbage, aside
- 10:25Speaker 1: from the fact that their picks are totally racist. Like
- 10:27Speaker 1: the people they get to vote is such a small
- 10:30Speaker 1: insular group, like it does not really representative of Hollywood itself.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I highly recommend it. We'll link it in the show notes.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It's very funny and very informative.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Awesome, here we go. Best Performance by an Actress in
- 10:44Speaker 2: a Limited Series Anya Taylor Joy for The Queen's Gambit,
- 10:48Speaker 2: and also for Best Performance by an Actress in a
- 10:55Speaker 2: Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for It. Okay, yeah, that's awesome. Wow,
- 11:03Speaker 2: that a stellar year for her.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I know, I really enjoyed her. She was kind of
- 11:07Speaker 1: brand new to me. Not kind of she was brand
- 11:09Speaker 1: new to me in The Queen's Gambit, but she's also
- 11:11Speaker 1: in Peaky Blinders, which I started and honestly fell asleep
- 11:14Speaker 1: in the first five minutes, which is again not a
- 11:16Speaker 1: judgment on the show. I fall asleep easily watching TV
- 11:18Speaker 1: in bed, but I would like to go back and
- 11:20Speaker 1: watch it strictly for her and the accents.
- 11:22Speaker 2: She's also in, like a horror movie. I can't you know,
- 11:25Speaker 2: I'm not going to watch. I know, I can't remember
- 11:27Speaker 2: the name of it. I'll link it in the show
- 11:29Speaker 2: notes to somebody's scoring it right now.
- 11:32Speaker 1: My personal favorite remake of Emma is Clueless, which is
- 11:35Speaker 1: one of my all time favorite movies. I'm a too
- 11:37Speaker 1: hardcore Alicia Silverstone fan. Saw in the movie theater. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: don't remember, but I've seen it hundreds of times. I
- 11:45Speaker 1: love that movie. I used to watch it over and over.
- 11:49Speaker 2: You know, it still creeps me out that like she
- 11:51Speaker 2: gets together with her stepbrother at the end. However, I
- 11:54Speaker 2: do love everything else about it.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they're not related.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Though, I know, but it's still weird. You know, I
- 12:00Speaker 2: went to college with her her you wait, Busy Hillips,
- 12:06Speaker 2: Alicia Silverstone and you all went to the same college.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yeah, at the same time. Actually, because she and I
- 12:13Speaker 1: took Alicia and I besties took photography, like in the
- 12:18Speaker 1: same semester. We weren't in the same class. We were
- 12:20Speaker 1: often in the dark room at the same time, and uh, Yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 1: that was my college claim to fame.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Was this pre or post Clueless?
- 12:29Speaker 1: It must have been post This is nineteen ninety eight,
- 12:32Speaker 1: ninety nine, Okay, it was post When did Clues come
- 12:35Speaker 1: out before ninety five? Yeah?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Well, you those of my college besties, you and your
- 12:40Speaker 2: celebrity college that you went to. That's right, because wasn't
- 12:43Speaker 2: Tom Hanks the son there too?
- 12:45Speaker 1: Colin?
- 12:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Colin, he's Louise girl. I went to college with
- 12:49Speaker 2: the girl who played Dylan McKay's younger sister on Beverly
- 12:54Speaker 2: Hills I two and O eric Erica. She was in
- 13:00Speaker 2: one of my chemistry classes at school.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but what was your first impression of this movie?
- 13:07Speaker 2: Unfortunately, this movie fell super flat for me. I was
- 13:11Speaker 2: very excited for it, and I thought it disappointed big time.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I didn't like it as much as I liked A
- 13:19Speaker 1: Beverly Hill's wedding. I didn't hate it. It was just
- 13:22Speaker 1: an okay movie for me. It was fine.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I didn't hate it either, you know. There. I have
- 13:28Speaker 2: a visceral reaction to some movies that I cannot stand,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and we have talked about them here on the podcast.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So this was not one of them. This just was
- 13:37Speaker 2: like super flat for me, Like I was like, okay.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Is it almost like the Winter Getaway movie for me?
- 13:44Speaker 1: Like I didn't hate it.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I was just like, okay, give me yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 13:48Speaker 2: yeah yeah exactly exactly.
- 13:50Speaker 1: All right, So what did you like about this movie?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Is there anything you liked?
- 13:55Speaker 2: I do? I have a short list of things that
- 13:57Speaker 2: I liked. First step, I thought the sets were vibrant
- 14:02Speaker 2: and bright and beautiful. And I know this is like
- 14:05Speaker 2: a stupid thing, but coming off of all those Christmas
- 14:08Speaker 2: movies and the Winter movies when everything is cold and
- 14:11Speaker 2: bleak and whatever, not that the Christmas movies were cold
- 14:14Speaker 2: and bleak, but the Winter vies were so I just
- 14:18Speaker 2: thought these were like beautiful. The restaurant had like all
- 14:20Speaker 2: these like vibe colors. There was this one thing too.
- 14:24Speaker 2: They took like the candles on the table, they were
- 14:29Speaker 2: in a jar, but then around the jar they wrapped
- 14:32Speaker 2: like colorful tissue paper, and I thought, what a great idea.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I've never seen that done before.
- 14:38Speaker 1: I thought that did so noticed. But I did think
- 14:40Speaker 1: the right thing was beautiful. I love the restaurant.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I thought the middle school looked like a business office, really,
- 14:47Speaker 2: but then I thought they did a great job of
- 14:49Speaker 2: like making it bright and vibrant, like what you would
- 14:52Speaker 2: see at school.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked the dance. I thought the dance looked great.
- 14:57Speaker 1: The decoorse for that, I agree. Agree.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Tell me some things you liked. I have a few more,
- 15:03Speaker 2: but I'm curious.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I loved the Ain't no Mountain high enough Dan scene,
- 15:07Speaker 1: Like I watched part of this movie while I was
- 15:09Speaker 1: getting ready and was totally dancing. Love that song. It's
- 15:12Speaker 1: a real remember the Titans moment for me like that.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Megan didn't like it, No, I hate it.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Fun, I loved it. I will not be brought down
- 15:24Speaker 1: from this moment. I loved it.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Okay, I'm going to talk about that specifically in our
- 15:28Speaker 2: next segment of what I would have wished for, But okay, yeah,
- 15:32Speaker 2: I'm not a fan. No.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I also enjoyed all of the food talk, Like there
- 15:38Speaker 1: was so much food talk and it wasn't like, oh,
- 15:42Speaker 1: let's have eggnog and sugar cookies like boring, right, It
- 15:45Speaker 1: was like unique and he was talking about family recipes
- 15:48Speaker 1: and it made me want to go to that restaurant
- 15:49Speaker 1: and have the abwellas angria and have a burrito, Like
- 15:53Speaker 1: give it to me now, I loved it. I like
- 15:55Speaker 1: when they make food almost a character in a book
- 15:59Speaker 1: or a movie. I like that.
- 16:01Speaker 2: I feel like that's good writing when you can like
- 16:06Speaker 2: make your viewers want to eat what you're talking about.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I love that. I love that. Okay, what else? That's
- 16:13Speaker 2: all I have?
- 16:14Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, Okay, that's not true. I did love
- 16:17Speaker 1: Nicholas Gonzalez.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Oh. I thought he was great.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Real I thoct him.
- 16:23Speaker 2: He was great. I have some notes about him too. Okay.
- 16:25Speaker 2: So what else I liked was, with the exception of
- 16:30Speaker 2: the main female lead, I thought the cast was pretty diverse.
- 16:35Speaker 2: I enjoyed that. I appreciate that. I liked that there
- 16:39Speaker 2: was an early kiss scene like it wasn't not only
- 16:43Speaker 2: at the end, but it was like almost an hour
- 16:46Speaker 2: and a half in when they were in the was it?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Where were they they were in the restaurant immediately after
- 16:52Speaker 1: they ain't no home out and high I've seen.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Okay, but hold on, hold on. I like the kissine
- 16:58Speaker 2: hold on. I have thought I will get to those.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I thought the tortilla scene when he was like, you
- 17:06Speaker 2: need some more oil now, a little bit of flower,
- 17:08Speaker 2: I was like, this is almost sexy. But it didn't
- 17:11Speaker 2: quite get there, but it was.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Their their breathy talk was quite a bit. Yeah, real
- 17:16Speaker 1: heavy in that moment.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I just that's why I was like, oh, hello, Nicholas Gonzalez,
- 17:21Speaker 2: what else can I find you? Man? I just loved him,
- 17:24Speaker 2: so yeah, that's all. That's how I got for what
- 17:26Speaker 2: I liked.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Okay, shall we talk roadblocks placed in the way of
- 17:29Speaker 1: our movie couple?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Is that? Oh? Oh, you know, I don't have many.
- 17:34Speaker 2: The only one I have is the ex wife seems
- 17:37Speaker 2: to be a problem. And then uh oh the ex
- 17:39Speaker 2: wife shows up?
- 17:39Speaker 1: Yeah I have Oh Eva is back. I also have
- 17:42Speaker 1: very early on, oh, Carrie has a long term boyfriend
- 17:45Speaker 1: that we're going to have to get rid of before
- 17:46Speaker 1: we move on to the real story.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Well, there also too was the uh oh, she might
- 17:52Speaker 2: have to move back to where to her mom?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, but why we've talked about this before,
- 17:58Speaker 1: but this is a all what we think. But the
- 18:00Speaker 1: families are like, you need to come home, like you
- 18:03Speaker 1: went there and it didn't work. What part of it
- 18:05Speaker 1: didn't work? She broke up with her boyfriend, so now
- 18:07Speaker 1: she can't stay in this city as an adult employed woman.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I don't understand.
- 18:12Speaker 2: That's so annoying.
- 18:13Speaker 1: She has a full life there, she has friends and
- 18:16Speaker 1: a job she's obviously great at. I know that could
- 18:20Speaker 1: have been cut out of the movie for me. I
- 18:22Speaker 1: also have uh oh, Carrie and David are at odds
- 18:25Speaker 1: over a school project.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Oh gosh, Dad, that too.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Which was manufactured drama for me because all of his
- 18:33Speaker 1: objections seemed completely absurd. When he's like, this isn't going
- 18:37Speaker 1: to succeed, I wanted her to be like, dude, it's
- 18:39Speaker 1: a fake school project. All she has to do is
- 18:41Speaker 1: like go through the motions. She doesn't actually have to
- 18:45Speaker 1: make any money.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I know. Well, the whole thing where he was like,
- 18:49Speaker 2: this is not going to succeed, I was like, dude,
- 18:51Speaker 2: we have e harmony. We have these are matchmaker services
- 18:55Speaker 2: that people are making a shit ton of money off of.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So hey, maybe it is going to succeed in the
- 18:59Speaker 2: middle school level.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Capitalize on all those raging hormones. Come on, right, all right, Well,
- 19:07Speaker 1: I have a feeling you have several in this next category,
- 19:09Speaker 1: which is what we wished for. So I'm gonna let
- 19:11Speaker 1: you just hop right in.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Okay, So I the two leads lacked any chemistry for me.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I just thought they were so mismatched. Okay, no way,
- 19:25Speaker 2: and plus like, she's a couple inches taller than him,
- 19:27Speaker 2: and I didn't like that. I thought it was very obvious.
- 19:30Speaker 2: It just bugged me. It just bugged me. I would
- 19:33Speaker 2: have rather seen and I even wrote this down. I
- 19:35Speaker 2: would have rather seen Alexa Panavega as Carrie in this role.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Do you remember Alexa Panavega from.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Sure from Taking a Shant of Love? But yeah, I
- 19:45Speaker 1: cannot believe you're height shaming him.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I'm not shaming him, I'm really not. I just it's
- 19:52Speaker 2: it just bothered me.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm sorry, that's so funny to me.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Okay, but but I did write down here. I thought
- 19:58Speaker 2: Nicholas Gonzalez, who played David, was belo believable. I cared
- 20:01Speaker 2: about his character as a single parent, you know, I
- 20:06Speaker 2: really liked him. I just thought it was a mismatch
- 20:09Speaker 2: between him and Laura van der Vut, who played a Carrie.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Yeah. I wanted more of the scene when Eva, the
- 20:20Speaker 1: long lost mother arrives to find David and Carrie kissing.
- 20:23Speaker 1: All we have is what do we have here? And
- 20:25Speaker 1: then cut to commercial and then it come back and
- 20:27Speaker 1: it's the next day. That story just led to nowhere.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It was like, not even relevant that she came back.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It didn't it didn't even matter as a whole.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It didn't even matter.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Well, I like that there was some resolution there because
- 20:41Speaker 1: they have her off screen the entire time and up
- 20:43Speaker 1: until you know, the last fifteen minutes, and I had wondered,
- 20:47Speaker 1: are we going to see her because she was just
- 20:48Speaker 1: kind of this invisible conflict happening between David and Clara
- 20:53Speaker 1: and not really between the two of them, but I
- 20:56Speaker 1: think she was creating conflict where it didn't exist. And
- 21:01Speaker 1: the mom also was like, why are you letting her
- 21:03Speaker 1: do this project if it's you know, she's going to
- 21:05Speaker 1: be embarrassed when nobody shows up at the restaurant, which
- 21:07Speaker 1: was so I've never seen two parents like less invested
- 21:12Speaker 1: in supporting their eighth grade daughter in their fake business resurtion.
- 21:22Speaker 1: And it was like and the daughter was okay with
- 21:24Speaker 1: like she's back, We're a family in a different way now.
- 21:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I liked that there wasn't that like trying to tear
- 21:31Speaker 1: them apart anymore when she moved back.
- 21:34Speaker 2: To the area. Listen, I just did not care about
- 21:37Speaker 2: that character or her coming back.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I didn't like her when she answers the door to Carrie,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and I felt like she had that moment of like,
- 21:43Speaker 1: we're having family time right now, and I was like,
- 21:47Speaker 1: but you're not getting back together.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Right My whole problem with that scene was didn't they
- 21:53Speaker 2: just spend the entire evening at the restaurant doing her
- 21:56Speaker 2: singles speed dating thing and then now, oh, they're having
- 22:00Speaker 2: family time at home? Like what time of night is this?
- 22:04Speaker 1: There's a lot of time continuity issues in this movie.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yes, she was at the dance waiting for her secret
- 22:11Speaker 2: admirer at seven o'clock and then boom, she's at the
- 22:14Speaker 2: restaurant hosting the speed dating. There was just a lot
- 22:17Speaker 2: of Am I wrong?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Were those different night day before Valentine's Day? I was confused,
- 22:22Speaker 1: But I do think the dance was the day before.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Well, they did not explain that very well. I thought,
- 22:29Speaker 2: I agree. I will get to that lip singing part
- 22:32Speaker 2: in a second. But this is what I really would
- 22:35Speaker 2: have liked from the story. I would have loved if
- 22:39Speaker 2: they would have flipped this story upside down and made
- 22:42Speaker 2: the single dad a gay man who meets his daughter's
- 22:48Speaker 2: teacher who is also part of the LGBTQ community. Wouldn't
- 22:52Speaker 2: that have been a great.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Movie, Yes, but it would not have featured a gay
- 22:58Speaker 1: man who was also not super white in the Hallmark world.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Oh you think I just choked.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I think I think Hallmark is making baby steps. I
- 23:11Speaker 1: don't think they're like I think they're like, whoa, that's like,
- 23:14Speaker 1: we can give them one thing, but we can't give
- 23:17Speaker 1: them too many. I just I would have loved it.
- 23:20Speaker 1: I yes, I would have loved that as well.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Like if if Clara was trying to set up her dad,
- 23:27Speaker 2: who was newly single with her teacher, I would have
- 23:31Speaker 2: loved that. That would have been so cute.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I like it.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Somebody rte that. I mean, you know what, we know
- 23:40Speaker 2: somebody I'm gonna sure this idea. I mean, I just
- 23:44Speaker 2: maybe you're just not going to see that on a
- 23:46Speaker 2: Hallmark movie yet. Hopefully in the future we will see that.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeah, have we gotten I don't think we've had a
- 23:54Speaker 1: gay lead couple. I know we've had some same sex
- 23:58Speaker 1: couples that are soup even strong supporting characters, But I
- 24:02Speaker 1: don't think we've had a lead main couple yet. I
- 24:05Speaker 1: don't think so Lifetime did. Hallmark is like dipping their
- 24:10Speaker 1: toe in real slowly.
- 24:15Speaker 2: I want to give more credit to the people who
- 24:16Speaker 2: watch these shows. I don't want to think that Hallmark
- 24:20Speaker 2: is cow telling to their audience, do you know right?
- 24:23Speaker 1: But they are yes, And believe me, there are people
- 24:26Speaker 1: in my life who feel who are very upset with Hallmark.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Not people that I like enjoy, but people that we
- 24:32Speaker 1: know who are upset about the direction Hallmark is taking
- 24:37Speaker 1: their movies. And I think at some point, I think
- 24:40Speaker 1: at some point Hallmark is going to have to say,
- 24:42Speaker 1: this is the world we live in. We're going to
- 24:44Speaker 1: represent real people and be okay with losing people who
- 24:53Speaker 1: are homophobic and racist and like, is that the audience
- 24:59Speaker 1: that you want? At some point, you're gonna have to
- 25:01Speaker 1: look at what the bottom line means to you.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, we're here for your homemark. We want that. Okay,
- 25:09Speaker 2: Now let's get to your favorite scene. Which was my
- 25:11Speaker 2: least favorite scene.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Ain't no mountain high enough? Now? Okay, when they just
- 25:18Speaker 2: showed him doing it, I thought, oh my god, this
- 25:21Speaker 2: is adorable. This is the music montage that I love
- 25:25Speaker 2: that I want from every movie. But then when she
- 25:28Speaker 2: jumped in, I was like super cringe the entire time.
- 25:32Speaker 2: It went like too long for me, and I can't
- 25:37Speaker 2: believe I'm gonna say this. They used carrots for the
- 25:39Speaker 2: microphone and it was far too phallic. And I'm twelve
- 25:42Speaker 2: years old, so I'm sorry they needed to use a
- 25:46Speaker 2: wooden spoon. I just was like, I'm laughing, uncomfortable with
- 25:50Speaker 2: this man.
- 25:50Speaker 1: With a scene. I agree that it was long, and
- 25:53Speaker 1: I was thinking, like, I wonder if they needed to
- 25:56Speaker 1: make this to fill this. Also in the opening scene,
- 26:00Speaker 1: the opening moment where it's like the opening notes of
- 26:04Speaker 1: the song or playing, did it feel like it played
- 26:06Speaker 1: more than it actually does in the song?
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yes?
- 26:09Speaker 1: Wait, ever going to get to the words of this song?
- 26:12Speaker 1: Are we just getting instrumental totally?
- 26:14Speaker 2: Because I like came in to sing like the first line.
- 26:18Speaker 2: I was like, wait, that's where the first line goes.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Why didn't they play it?
- 26:21Speaker 1: That's what I thought too. I was, wait a minute,
- 26:23Speaker 1: they're not going to use the actual song, We're just
- 26:25Speaker 1: going to get some like instrumental of him dancing. I
- 26:28Speaker 1: did think it went long. I wondered what they were
- 26:30Speaker 1: going to do with those carrots afterwards, like are we
- 26:32Speaker 1: going to throw them away? Not in that sense, but
- 26:36Speaker 1: I was hoping, Oh, my god, God gosh, Yes, I agree.
- 26:40Speaker 2: That is where my mind went. They were not going
- 26:43Speaker 2: to be used for consumption, that they were going to
- 26:45Speaker 2: go into the trash. I wasn't being dirty with these parrots,
- 26:48Speaker 2: that's what you were suggesting. Now, you know, dancing around
- 26:56Speaker 2: a restaurant kitchen just feels unsafe for me too.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Well, then she hops up on the cunner. I was like,
- 27:02Speaker 1: wait a minute, you can put your butt where ed
- 27:05Speaker 1: hot things go and be on the surface that it's
- 27:07Speaker 1: supposed to be sanitary.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, it would. I don't know. I was
- 27:13Speaker 2: so uncomfortable by the entire thing, with the exception of
- 27:17Speaker 2: his very solo part at the beginning.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I was admittedly focused on him in that dance scene.
- 27:24Speaker 1: He had more of the moves than she did.
- 27:27Speaker 2: She just is So I'm not trying to shit all
- 27:31Speaker 2: over these movies and the actors and the actresses. I
- 27:34Speaker 2: just she's just it was a mismatch casting, That's what
- 27:38Speaker 2: I'm going back to. I don't think that she's like
- 27:40Speaker 2: a terrible actress. She was fine. I just think it
- 27:43Speaker 2: was a mismatch in casting.
- 27:45Speaker 1: How about we want to digit you that questions, plot
- 27:47Speaker 1: holes and things we need to discuss.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Okay, I got a few shocker.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I have a big question.
- 27:54Speaker 2: M hm.
- 27:55Speaker 1: How can a restaurant afford to be closed on Valentine's Day?
- 27:59Speaker 1: How much are these people paying for this speed dating
- 28:03Speaker 1: program that allows them to just say, like you, we're
- 28:05Speaker 1: not gonna be open on Valentine's Day, We're gonna let
- 28:07Speaker 1: you have your project.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Yeah, she should have did the project like at lunchtime,
- 28:12Speaker 2: and then the restaurant could have opened for dinner time
- 28:15Speaker 2: or pre Valentine's Day, Right, you want to meet somebody
- 28:20Speaker 2: before Valentine's Day.
- 28:22Speaker 1: There's also a lot of times like okay, there's a
- 28:25Speaker 1: lot of continuity issues. I have not continuity timing issues.
- 28:29Speaker 1: But the tortilla making night, Clara is at basketball, which
- 28:33Speaker 1: we know from my previous scene ends at maybe nine o'clock.
- 28:37Speaker 1: What time are they making tortillas that the restaurant is
- 28:39Speaker 1: completely clothes and empty of people? Or is this the
- 28:43Speaker 1: restaurant that they just only open occasionally?
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 28:46Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, see, that's the Joy's been crazy too. Mm hmm.
- 28:50Speaker 2: So this movie takes place in Seattle during early February.
- 28:53Speaker 2: I don't think they were dressed for it. It's a
- 28:56Speaker 2: lot colder and rainier in Seattle during this time of year,
- 29:00Speaker 2: and we were like, she's in her beautiful jackets, which
- 29:02Speaker 2: I love every movie when I have the beautiful jackets on.
- 29:06Speaker 2: And they had that kid mowing the lawn before school, Like, no, no.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Right, sunshiny day.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Yeah, not happening.
- 29:14Speaker 1: There's a there's a day in the movie. In the morning,
- 29:16Speaker 1: the dad comes into the classroom and it's upset with her.
- 29:18Speaker 1: In the afternoon, she and her friend are out running,
- 29:21Speaker 1: and then at night they're like at a PTA meeting
- 29:24Speaker 1: and she's back in her work clothes. I was like,
- 29:26Speaker 1: wait a minute, Yeah, what is happening here when she
- 29:30Speaker 1: cause And the only reason I knew it was the
- 29:31Speaker 1: same day because she's like, oh, he came to my
- 29:33Speaker 1: classroom this morning. They didn't need that this morning to
- 29:36Speaker 1: make that PTA meeting believable. Could have been any night.
- 29:39Speaker 1: I just thought, how many hours do you have in
- 29:41Speaker 1: your day and why would you change back into your
- 29:43Speaker 1: work clothes for PTA meeting.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I also noticed in that scene too, either in the
- 29:46Speaker 2: morning her hair was pulled back and then at the
- 29:49Speaker 2: met PTA meeting it was down. Yeah continuity. Those those
- 29:53Speaker 2: things drive me crazy, and I don't know why I
- 29:56Speaker 2: always notice the I'm like a dog, you know what
- 29:59Speaker 2: I mean. I just noticed this crap another thing. I
- 30:03Speaker 2: actually post this on our Girls Gone Hallmark Instagram this morning, Sennaharts.
- 30:09Speaker 1: I looked it up.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Isn't it actual candy?
- 30:12Speaker 1: No, which is why it's so weird that they zoom
- 30:16Speaker 1: in on the name of them over and over again
- 30:18Speaker 1: several times.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Yes, that was so bizarre, right, And I swear they
- 30:23Speaker 2: were using Hershey kisses in their candy grams.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Oh probably, I mean I have the Hershey sponsorship, so
- 30:31Speaker 1: they're not gonna s.
- 30:34Speaker 2: There was a line there they said that the PTA
- 30:37Speaker 2: candygrams made enough money for field trips for the rest
- 30:40Speaker 2: of the year. I was like, holy crap, where are
- 30:43Speaker 2: they charged. Look, Megan and I have both been integral
- 30:46Speaker 2: parts of the PTA in our children's respective schools. You
- 30:50Speaker 2: don't make that much money on Chiser.
- 30:53Speaker 1: They bought all that candy and all the supplies, plus
- 30:56Speaker 1: what they're selling them for, plus how big is this school? No,
- 31:01Speaker 1: field trips are expensive, the buses are expensive. My kids
- 31:05Speaker 1: are paying no shit, forty five dollars a kid for
- 31:07Speaker 1: field trips last year, which blew my mind. I don't know.
- 31:10Speaker 1: That seems like a lot for regular field trip. You'd
- 31:13Speaker 1: be like eight dollars. Yeah, anyway, I'm just saying, no,
- 31:18Speaker 1: I don't believe it. Also, who bought I know, like
- 31:21Speaker 1: he David and his ex bought her a new laptop?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Who bought her a desk and a chair? Okay, they
- 31:30Speaker 1: bought them with the fundraising money that's supposed to go
- 31:33Speaker 1: to the school. But now the teacher's getting a new
- 31:35Speaker 1: desk and chair.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I know she makes a joke about it at
- 31:38Speaker 2: the very beginning. But then they're at that awards ceremony
- 31:41Speaker 2: or whatever, and they just like push out this desk
- 31:43Speaker 2: and push out this chair. We bought you this furniture,
- 31:46Speaker 2: Like how did you get it there? Like what?
- 31:49Speaker 1: And you were going to win?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Yeah exactly. And then they give her this laptop. It's
- 31:54Speaker 2: like a refurbished laptop with a bow on it. It's
- 31:57Speaker 2: not like in a box, it's not brand new. So
- 32:00Speaker 2: bizarre it was.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I did think, I will admit though, I did enjoy
- 32:05Speaker 1: that moment as much as I'm tearing it apart right now,
- 32:08Speaker 1: I did think it was a sweet moment where they
- 32:10Speaker 1: gave for those things as unbelievable as I think it is.
- 32:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's because your husband does a similar
- 32:17Speaker 2: program at his own school.
- 32:19Speaker 1: No. Yes, and he's been on like the receiving end
- 32:22Speaker 1: of surprise gifts, like he was helpful Honda Teacher Appreciation
- 32:26Speaker 1: Week recipient, which was a fun experience. So like the
- 32:29Speaker 1: you know, I cry when I see teachers.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Of course, teachers need to be recognized. I absolutely stand
- 32:37Speaker 2: behind that. I just thought it was so weird.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Oh, it didn't make any sense, like where did the
- 32:41Speaker 1: money come from? And of the school is supposed to
- 32:43Speaker 1: get it, but like no, no, the teacher gets a
- 32:44Speaker 1: new desks. Sorry, kids, you can't have the computers that
- 32:48Speaker 1: you need. No new books?
- 32:53Speaker 2: All right? Is there anything else? That's all I have
- 32:56Speaker 2: time to rate it.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I'm a little nervous.
- 33:00Speaker 2: You to go first.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I am giving this movie two and a half stars. Wow,
- 33:04Speaker 1: perfectly average, serviceable.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Fine, what did you give Beverly Hill's Wedding three stars? Three?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Me too. I loved Beverly Hill's wedding in comparison to
- 33:13Speaker 2: this movie. I gave this one and a half stars.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Okay, stuff there.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I did the characters, I mean not the characters, but
- 33:23Speaker 2: the acting. The casting just killed it. For me.
- 33:27Speaker 1: All right, So next week we have Mixed Up in
- 33:30Speaker 1: the Mediterranean featuring Jeremy Jordan. Not alright and.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I had a posted a poll on our Instagram stories
- 33:44Speaker 1: and the vast majority of people, even though the majority
- 33:48Speaker 1: were nine two and o fans, did not remember that line,
- 33:51Speaker 1: which I was disappointed because it's such a burned in memory.
- 33:55Speaker 2: They're not true nine two and o fans. And you
- 33:58Speaker 2: know you can search at half tag on Instagram Jeremy
- 34:02Speaker 2: Jordan Alright, things come up. Sadly, that clip does not
- 34:06Speaker 2: come out. It just does not exist anymore. It's got
- 34:10Speaker 2: to somewhere on the internet.
- 34:11Speaker 1: If you missed it. Yesterday we publish an interview with
- 34:16Speaker 1: Julie Sherman Wolf, the writer of Taking a Shot at Love,
- 34:19Speaker 1: among many other Hallmark movies. You would love it if
- 34:22Speaker 1: you would give it a listen. She was an absolute
- 34:23Speaker 1: delight to talk to and we're looking forward to more
- 34:26Speaker 1: movies from her. Of course, you can catch our regular
- 34:29Speaker 1: podcast every Tuesday, and while you're here, if you would
- 34:32Speaker 1: leave a rating or a review, we would absolutely love it.
- 34:36Speaker 1: If you enjoy us, and until next time, have a
- 34:38Speaker 1: great week.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Bye bye.
