- 0:22Welcome back to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the
- 0:26longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world. That's right, ten
- 0:30years strong. We got a great discussion coming your way. We're gonna be
- 0:34getting into this Philadelphia Flyers offseason. The NHL Draft is just around the corner.
- 0:39And yes, I know we had a conversation last week about this,
- 0:43but you know, digesting the Danny Brier trade a little bit more and the
- 0:48fact that the Flyers are going to have two first round picks heading into this
- 0:52draft. It's a great conversation to keep having up until this draft. So
- 0:56let's get to our discussion this week. You can find them on Twitter at
- 1:00Kurt Underscore b s H. He has written some words on one of our
- 1:03favorite Flyers websites over the years, Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. It is great
- 1:08to have him on our Table Talk podcast this week. We've got mister Kurt
- 1:12R. How you doing, Kurt, I'm doing great. Thanks again for
- 1:15having me Now. It's nice and you know, everything's relative, but it
- 1:19feels like an exciting time to be talking about the Flyers compared to It's weird
- 1:23how the last couple of years have been certainly, it's it's really weird.
- 1:26There's like optimism within Flyers Nation and I can't believe we have this level of
- 1:30optimism. And of course there are certain factions of Flyers Nation that are Debbie
- 1:34Downers and that just consistently are saying team stinks, teams always gonna stink.
- 1:38But in reality, from a logical standpoint, Kurt, good things are happening
- 1:42for this Flyers team and organization. I think I think I came on this
- 1:47show early last season when like the Flyers had a couple like they got a
- 1:51couple wins under torch, and we're like, well, this is kind of
- 1:53fun. Yeah, absolutely watching the team not be terrible. You know,
- 1:57we the year played out exactly is any one could have predicted in July like
- 2:00they were bad not bad enough, some Tortorell squeezed the most out of them,
- 2:05and yeah, it seems like they're they're trying now, they're exactly.
- 2:07Well, we'll get into it. Yeah, we'll get into it for sure.
- 2:10Yeah. Listen before we get into some Flyers talk, though, Kurt,
- 2:13you know Stanley Cup Finals. Wanted to get your thoughts on it because
- 2:15it's just it's not how I thought things were gonna go. And I guess
- 2:19that's the beauty of postseason play in sports in general, especially in the hockey
- 2:23world too. Hell, I had the Bruins heading to the finals. You
- 2:27know, my brackets were broken basically after that first round. Would have been
- 2:30your thoughts about how these finals have played out and the playoffs as a hole
- 2:35and what do you think we're gonna remember most about this postseason? Yeah,
- 2:38I had Boston over Dallas, so I'm there with you. But it's yeah,
- 2:43I mean, it's been fun. It's been I think, you know,
- 2:44a good postseason for the like for the game I remember. Yeah,
- 2:47that first round, as it always is is it feels like the first round
- 2:52is usually the most fun round in the NHL playoffs. Very much lived up
- 2:54to that and sort of fizzled out since then, not the like, you
- 2:58know, no disrespect of Florida Vegas, but like the series sort of got
- 3:00less interesting as it went on, and you know, you may we're recording
- 3:04here on Monday, it may end in five. Um, you know,
- 3:07the conference finals were both nearly one was asleep, one nearly was like,
- 3:10you know, it's sort of fizzled out as it went on. But like,
- 3:13oh in awesome, really high, you know, fun hockey to watch.
- 3:16I mean, you know, Florida, I'm not shocked there here.
- 3:20I saw that. Like I remember saying in March, like they look good.
- 3:23I don't know if they're going to be what they were last year when
- 3:23they won the Presatory, but they looked good. I don't I didn't think
- 3:27they had it in them to run through Boston, Toronto and Carolina all in
- 3:31a row. But I didn't think they get past Carolina. Yeah, I
- 3:35just didn't. They have you know, they have the guy who might be
- 3:38the best player in the league not named conn mc david, right ko Chuck,
- 3:42Like they've got good players. But yeah, I mean Vegas obviously is
- 3:45the big story now. I mean easy to say when they're going away from
- 3:46the Cup, but like they sort of like slowed down late into the season
- 3:51and you had to remind yourself, Oh right, they're bringing back Keel and
- 3:53Stone yea, and but no, they mean, it'll be fascinating to see
- 4:00the discourse if Vegas does you know, finish this out. Um just you
- 4:03know sixth Yer like Sixthier team, everything had happened with me. They went
- 4:06from you know, the high of making the Cup final right after expansion bottomed
- 4:11out a little bit last year when they were supposed to be good, um,
- 4:14and then made the wayback up. Like they're a team that tries a
- 4:17lot, like they've they've tried a lot, Like they're very much not stuck
- 4:20in the ways. That feels like a lot of NHL teams are right and
- 4:24like them in Seattle are both kind of like that, and I'm excited to
- 4:26see, Like if Vegas wins, it's it's always the conversation is always like
- 4:30what what do you learn from the Cup winner? Right? And if Vegas
- 4:33wins, like I wonder if we'll see some teams get a little more aggressive.
- 4:38Um, they're they're amazing modern day Yeah, amazing modern day NFL or
- 4:41NFL, NHL teams like you like you mentioned like I think with every sport,
- 4:47you take a look at the champion with the sport in all teams kind
- 4:50of maybe go back to the drawing board to an extent and say, okay,
- 4:53how can we do things like this particular team. And I think like
- 4:57when you look at a team like the Philadelphia Fly just like we were talking
- 5:00about initially, like there's optimism there and you know, moving into moving into
- 5:06some Flyers talk here. I mean, last week on our podcast, my
- 5:10co host Lennon and I were talking about Danny Brier's first trade is GM and
- 5:14just how remarkable it was. Remarkable from the standpoint where you know, we
- 5:17saw a complex yet creative maneuvering basically coming from a front office that's been extremely
- 5:25stagnant over these years, and I think it just shocked us. It was
- 5:28so surprising for so many of us. How do you characterize that first move
- 5:32by Brier current and what might it set into motion for this rebuild in your
- 5:39opinion? Yeah, I mean, we'll see what happens to the rest of
- 5:42lay, but it was certainly a good start. Like I'm frankly, i'm
- 5:46surprised that they So I sort of looked at that trade as two parts.
- 5:48There's the first and second five and Provov and there's the second and hello Grondze
- 5:56for cap space for you know, taking LA's cap dumps. Yeah, I'm
- 6:00surprised the Flyers decided they had the room to take on a cap dump,
- 6:03which, like, given that their cap sheet if you go to cap friendly
- 6:08as a smoldering waste fire, right, So so like I'm surprised that they
- 6:12were willing to do that. So it does sort of show like they're willing
- 6:15to step back and take some things on for the for the value, like
- 6:19for to pick up value long term. I think I've seen reasonable people agree
- 6:23to disagree whether they got enough for taking for like taking that burden off of
- 6:27La. But like the provof part is probably more interesting because like it seemed
- 6:30like he was going to be gone this offseason for a number of reasons.
- 6:33He didn't clash well with It seemed like he clashed with Tortorella, his play
- 6:39hasn't been great any of the last three years. Really, um, you
- 6:42seem like they just wanted to actually not be here infinitely. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:47I mean I will, Well, we'll get to this with another guy.
- 6:50But I feel like when you look at where the Flyers are, there
- 6:53three sort of groups of guys. For me, like no one's off the
- 6:56table, anyone should be available, but like there's the guys who you should
- 7:00keeper around unless you get a good deal. And for me, that's like
- 7:01Scott Lawton for instance, like he makes sense for rebuilding team. Then there's
- 7:04the guys where like I can hear both sides of it, but you have
- 7:08to at least consider moving them. That's probably like a Carter harror, like
- 7:11a traps connecting me. You guys, I don't think we're gonna talk much
- 7:13about here. And then there's the guys whoe are Like unless you're taking an
- 7:15absolute bath dealing them, you gotta deal them. Yeah, another guy,
- 7:18we're gonna talk about it. Things on that list, But provol was probably
- 7:21in that group for me, like it seemed like he had to move on,
- 7:26like it hadn't clicked for him for a few years here. He had
- 7:28a brief stretcher early in the year where he looked good, but like all
- 7:30in all, not an overly impressive year for him. He and Tortorella included
- 7:34and sid eyed. He doesn't seem like a guy who takes direct criticism well,
- 7:38so he's not gonna work well with John Tortorella. Ye enjoyed my babcock,
- 7:41buddy, But yeah, I think it made a lot of sense for
- 7:46them, And I feel like a one and a two for for what Provoov's
- 7:50track record is is a solid outcome, like maybe like we'll never really know
- 7:56like what else was out there and never know how well Banny like Breyer really
- 8:00you know, look through the market, but it feels like a good outcome
- 8:03for what he was. Um, so yeah, I mean I like it.
- 8:05And it does show like taking on Ivan prov like getting rid of Ivan
- 8:09Provrov with the biggest name on defense, you get back being Sean Walker,
- 8:13who's like probably a solid four or five guy who's a little overpaid. Yeah,
- 8:18Like it does show like, yeah, they're willing to take a step
- 8:20back here, and I think, you know, it shows a direction and
- 8:24like you said, creativity, Um, and yeah, it's a it's a
- 8:28it's a good deal for them. I feel it's always tough to you know,
- 8:33glean too much from the first deal, like you look at and say,
- 8:35wow, they got a lot of value back for this. Um.
- 8:37It's easier to make deals when you're not the ones trying to actively win.
- 8:41Like we remember Ron Heckstalls or Ron Heckstall's early tenure, like he made some
- 8:43good self deal. It's like disort of reminding me a little bit of brain
- 8:46Coburn for a first, a third and Radko Goodist, which in hindsight is
- 8:50a ridiculous deal that basically helped you get basically got them traps connect me.
- 8:54Yeah, so yeah, um, I don't want to say like, oh,
- 8:58Danny's gonna be fleecing guys left and right. But it's a good start.
- 9:00It's definitely a good start, very good start for sure. And moving
- 9:03along here, Kurt, there's one guy that I've really been thinking a lot
- 9:07about this offseason, and that's Tony D'Angelo. And and then all of a
- 9:11sudden, one of our friends of the show here, Charlie O'Connor from The
- 9:13Athletic, he's also in the BSA Tradio podcast, recently wrote an incredible piece
- 9:20on The Athletic about Tony d'angelo's season, how he went from just being a
- 9:26top defensive pairing, you know, to being scratched towards the end of the
- 9:28season. Charlie just highlighted what type of player he was and who he has
- 9:35become here as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. You know, he and
- 9:39the head coach obviously both have emotional personalities. They've certainly clashed during the course
- 9:43of his first season here in Philadelphia. I do wonder what happens to Tony
- 9:48D'Angelo from here. What are your thoughts in terms of who he is where
- 9:52he could be going and if he even stays here within this Flyers organization.
- 9:56Yeah. So when I was talking about how there are three groups of guys,
- 10:00D'Angelo is in the third group for me, Like, if you can
- 10:01deal him without taking a bath on it, you I think you try to.
- 10:05Um. Yeah, the thing is like when you when you brought him
- 10:09in. The objection I had purely talking in terms of like hockey and as
- 10:13a teammate, not getting anything else, probably talking hockey as a team they
- 10:16last year. The objection I had with Dangelo was he was on his best
- 10:20behavior in Carolina two years ago before the Flyers traded for him in an am
- 10:24near ideal situation on a really good team with a good player like with a
- 10:28paired with a good player in Jacob Slavenum on a one year deal making like
- 10:33I think it was two mill where he knew he had to behave and he
- 10:35did and he played pretty well for them. Um. And the objection I
- 10:39had with trading for him last year was this isn't a perfect situation for him,
- 10:43and the Flyers probably gonna be bad, and if they're bad, he's
- 10:46gonna be like he's not gonna have a good attitude, he's gonna be cranky.
- 10:50Does anyone really think Tony D'Angelo is going to have a good attitude a
- 10:54better rebuild? Does anyone actually think this? Like, again, you have
- 11:00to think there's some value for him out there, Like if all you can
- 11:01get to like a sixth round pick or something, you probably don't do it.
- 11:03Like at that point, you just wait, wait for the deadline,
- 11:07see if maybe some team will unless the situation just becomes untenable. But if
- 11:13you can deal him for something remotely resembling value, I think you do it,
- 11:16because, like, he's not the kind of guy who's gonna be a
- 11:20great soldier through a rebuild. He's not like and he isn't going to have
- 11:24their reinforcements around him. Like the theory behind him in Provov made some sense
- 11:28if you thought you were getting a good Ivan Provov, as we discussed it
- 11:31weren't, so you weren't going to get a very good Tony D'Angelo. And
- 11:35there's no one else around that fits what that could be for him, unless
- 11:37you really believe that what Rasmus or Salinon did last year as to be like
- 11:43a solid four or five defensive defenseman will stick and I need to see more
- 11:48of that to believe it. So I'd probably look to move on from him,
- 11:52because again, it just doesn't even if you see the value in him,
- 11:56even if you think he could have some bounce back, even if you
- 11:58think he wouldn't be as bad as he was last year, the situation doesn't
- 12:01feel right. And granted I thought that was the case from the start,
- 12:03so maybe, like maybe I'm not there, I got to ask, but
- 12:07I think that I think if you can deal him for something, and you
- 12:11know, he had value last offseason, which is why the Flyers have to
- 12:15give up three draft picks to get him, he probably has less now because
- 12:18of the season he just had with you know, him not being great,
- 12:20him getting scratched for the final two weeks season, and his coach basically coming
- 12:24out and say, yeah, even I'm shocked by how a little defense he
- 12:26plays, right, but it's it's tough. I'd try to deal him.
- 12:31But if if the value's not there, Yeah, if the value's not there
- 12:35and you don't think the situation is totally toxic, then I guess you hang
- 12:39onto him. But I think you've got to be willing to pull that trigger,
- 12:41because again, I just don't know if he's a guy who's gonna be
- 12:45a good soldier through all this like some other guys might. Absolutely, I
- 12:48think your sentiments are very much in line with where Flyers Nation in general is.
- 12:52I think if they are able to move him, whether it's at the
- 12:56draft, before the trade deadline, see you later, Tony. It was,
- 13:00it was, it was. It was nice knowing. Yes, So,
- 13:03Kurt, let's let's get into some Flyers pre draft talk here as well.
- 13:07Last week on the pod here we had Madeline Campbell from broad Street Hockey
- 13:11on. We were talking about some of the prospects and as well as whether
- 13:16or not the Flyers really should stay at number seven overall or do they try
- 13:20to move whether it's up or down the board. I'm wondering, you know,
- 13:24as we're getting closer to the draft here, what do you think they
- 13:28should do? And what do you hope they do as it pertains to the
- 13:31number seven overall pick. What are your thoughts here? Yeah, so,
- 13:35sorry for the anticlimactic answer. I think they're going to stay at seven.
- 13:37I'd be that's what I think too. Yeah, No, yeah, it's
- 13:41so I looked at this, I looked at this five years ago. I
- 13:46guess the last time the Flyers, I think the last time the Fires went
- 13:48to a draft with two first round picks when they had the Shen pick where
- 13:52they took Fairbe and O'Brien. Yeah, I looked at you. Before that
- 13:54draft, there was a lot of talking like should they trade up? And
- 13:58the last time there was a pure pick for pick trade that involved a top
- 14:03ten pick was two thousand and eight, and that was five years ago.
- 14:05Still the case now, Hows it happens? Since two thousand and eight,
- 14:07there have been picks traded with There have been trades involving picks with players,
- 14:11like I think like Chicago got back into the top ten by trading Ox to
- 14:16bring it last year. It's like maybe there's something like that. Maybe if
- 14:18you can get creative with like a player trade, like if there's some team
- 14:22in the top four or five that's really desperate, maybe, but I don't
- 14:26see it happening. Like I think we've got Bidard clearly, one, Fintilly
- 14:30almost certainly two, Carlson and Smith are going to be three and four in
- 14:33some order, and then most likely and then from there, I don't I
- 14:37think there's and we'll get into this. I think there's a concentration of guys
- 14:41there. It's very much going to be a beauties in the eye the beholder
- 14:45thing. And I think that if you're the Flyers, unless you really see
- 14:48a gap between one or two of those guys and everyone else, you're not
- 14:52You're not moving up just because again, there's so little precedent for the Flyers
- 14:54trading up or trading out of that pick. And I think like they and
- 14:58I also think they know they need high end talent. I think to trade
- 15:01out of that pick, they need a to not move. It's it's a
- 15:05tough needle, a threat because they need to not move very far downright,
- 15:09B have a lot of guys like in the same tier as who they'd have
- 15:11in number seven, and like, see, they need to get the right
- 15:15package, like you need to be worth it for them. I don't.
- 15:18It's a lot there's a lot of precedents suggesting they're just going to stay at
- 15:20seven to make the pick, and that's probably the right move. Like there's
- 15:24enough talent that I think, yeah, I think they're just going to look
- 15:26at it and say, yeah, we're fine here. I agree, I
- 15:30think they should stay at number seven. Overall, if they try to move
- 15:33up, I think they're going to be giving up a little bit too much
- 15:35as they look toward this rebuild, and it's it's that initial gut feeling.
- 15:39Look, I like matth Mitch CoV, I love Mitch CoV and I hope
- 15:45the Flyers can somehow get him, even though I've seen, you know,
- 15:48some mock drafts where he's heading to San Jose. I mean, he's my
- 15:52first I would say, quote logical choice, Kurt, but we of course
- 15:56know the challenges that comes with him from a country you know that's currently embroiled
- 16:00in a war. We're not sure about Russian players heading to the NHL potentially
- 16:06in the future. There are some hurdles and some challenges for sure with drafting
- 16:10Mitch cob possibly if they had the opportunity to do that. But I mean,
- 16:14at the end of the day, like with him, like I want
- 16:15a winger with some natural ability. He's a natural goal scorer, he's a
- 16:19game breaker, he has incredible talent. I think he's the type of guy
- 16:25who the Flyers would need for this rebuild. I mean, do you like
- 16:29mitchkov and do you think he's a he's do you think it's realistic for the
- 16:33Flyers that could could potentially draft him at number seven overall, And if not,
- 16:37who do you think the Flyers should go after with that number seven overall
- 16:41pick? Yeah, so it's Mitch Coof. I think people have really strong
- 16:45feelings. Like I've seen a lot of people say like just absolutely absolutely not
- 16:48crossmouth the list and then say some are like, if he's there, how
- 16:52could you possibly not take him? Right? I'm in the middle there,
- 16:55Like I think, like with any player who isn't Contrabdard or maybe Fantilly,
- 16:59they're risk you have to and this is true of you know, ninety nine
- 17:00point nine drafted players in any sport. Ever, like it's his risks are
- 17:06he's stuck in Russia for at least three years on a contract and then who
- 17:08knows if he'll be able to come over after that period. But like,
- 17:11if if that didn't exist, he'd go number two in the draft. It's
- 17:17something you have to, like, there's a reason he's there, It's something
- 17:19you have to weigh, like, there's a lot you have to consider there.
- 17:22But in terms of pure talent, it's very difficult to argue. Like
- 17:25the numbers he put up in the Khel this year. You know, I've
- 17:30seen people say, like, the closest comparable you can find him in terms
- 17:33of like age, I'll scoring at his age is alex of Etchkin. And
- 17:34that's not say he's going to be out of Etchkin. That's deeply unfair.
- 17:38But it goes to show you what we're talking about here, Like the fact
- 17:41that he's under contract for three years doesn't bug me much Like if a guy
- 17:47you draft is probably not going to come over for at least it's probably not
- 17:51going to play for two years minimum, what's one more? Since the Flyers
- 17:53were probably not going to be great in twenty twenty five anyways, um it
- 17:59Really he just comes down to do you think that the Flyers are like going
- 18:03to be stuck waiting for him to come over for you know, other reasons,
- 18:07whether he just wants to sign another contract or if they won't let him,
- 18:10if it's like a Fidotov situation. Um, oh god, that poor
- 18:14kid, that poor guy. Yeah. So yeah, I if he's there
- 18:18unless the board shakes out some other way where some someone else falls, i'd
- 18:23i'd i'd be interested in taking him, definitely, like i'd i'd probably have
- 18:26him there, but I'd understand not doing it. Um. Something that I
- 18:30think I think it was Charlie actually said Anasa trade a while ago, is
- 18:33that part of the appeal of mitchkof is assuming you can get assuming he will
- 18:37come over in three years, Like that's your window. You're like the three
- 18:40year contract, Like this is how much time you have to get rid of
- 18:42all the get rid of all the garbage, um like clear clear at the
- 18:47cap books, get some good players, and then he comes over and you
- 18:49go. So I do like that. Um, I'm guessing he's probably gonna
- 18:55get taken before then. I think some team is going to be like some
- 18:56team that's also in a rebuild, it's going to be willing to take that
- 19:00swing. Um. If he's there, though, I'd be interested, um
- 19:03beyond him there. You know. It's it's like it's it's a good draft
- 19:08to have the seventh pick. I'll definitely say that. I'm not an expert
- 19:11by any stretched the imagination. Um, but when the Flyers have two picks
- 19:15like this, I do like to look at it a bit. Um.
- 19:18Zach Benson's a guy I like a lot Um the winger. I don't it
- 19:22seems like the consensus is that would be a reach at seven, but like
- 19:26a little bit of a reach at seven. But um, I do but
- 19:30the profiles one, I like a lot dude who just scores a lot,
- 19:33like you know, a talented winger. Um, it would be really fun
- 19:36to have a guy like that around, Like that's a that's a big swing.
- 19:38Um. I don't know if they do it, but um, that'd
- 19:42be a fun like if if the board shakes out the way, if it's
- 19:45like if it's THEO, if it's the top four we expect and then mitchcalf
- 19:49at five. Um, if you start looking at everyone else available, um,
- 19:52because I don't think Ben I'd be surprised Benson goes six. He'd probably
- 19:56be the guy like the most David Ryanbuckers, the defenseman who it seems like
- 20:00it's the top defenseman in the draft. Yeah, Um, I think I
- 20:03think, yeah, I wouldn't hate the pick there, but I think,
- 20:06like I think, like I wouldn't hate it, but I'd be like it
- 20:10like yeah, fine, yeah, yeah, they do need they do need
- 20:12defenseman. Um. But yeah, and you know he's a he's a big
- 20:18defenseman. Guys like that tend to get drafted high. Um, but yeah,
- 20:22if you take him there, Okay, Um, who's the other one?
- 20:25Ryan Leonards in intry one other thing is going to be in the conversation
- 20:27there. Um. And then I think Dalla boor Davorski was the other one
- 20:32that like, he's a center. I think I've seen some people question like
- 20:34how high it's upside is in a vacuum sort of screams flyers pick and that
- 20:40like he's a good two way center who has some talent, and like,
- 20:44yeah, it does sound like something they do. But um, there,
- 20:47there's there's stuff there. I like he's but yeah, it's there's a lot
- 20:51of different directions there. And again not next bread, right, I mean
- 20:52that's just naming names that have come up a lot that I could see them
- 20:56going for. Benson's probably the one I liked the most. If you're making
- 20:59me right now, Yeah, but I don't know if they go that direction,
- 21:03I think it's yeah, it would absolutely be fun. And I think
- 21:04what's interesting about this number seven overall pick too is how you know things are
- 21:08impacted having the number twenty two overall pick, which we're gonna get into and
- 21:14just a bit here and again, folks, we're talking to Kurt Are at
- 21:17Kurt Underscore b s H. You'd write some words over at Broadstreet Hockey every
- 21:22now and again Broadstreet Hockey dot com. I'm a subscriber, and we love
- 21:26the folks over there. Yeah, yeah, I did. Y'all should be
- 21:29a subscriber. Help them out over there, and they're always putting up great
- 21:33content. Love the newsletters too. I told Madeline I loved her crochet newsletter
- 21:37from last week. I was like, you know what, I just don't
- 21:38want hockey talk. I learned a little bit about crochet, so it was
- 21:41fantastic. But really getting into and finally about this number twenty two overall pick
- 21:48here in the draft. Look, two first rounders setting the stage for the
- 21:53future. It's so exciting, it really is, when we haven't had much
- 21:57excitement in Flyers Nation for some time, and I personally am thinking that a
- 22:00center would be a nice pick here, possibly a guy like Brandon Yager who
- 22:06played for Moose Jaw, or perhaps David Edgstrom from und Yes, thank you,
- 22:15I hope. Well he's a premium center in this draft. So I'm
- 22:18wondering what are your thoughts on what the Flyers might want to do with this
- 22:22number twenty two overall pick. It's not just about the number seven pick,
- 22:25but it's a strategy, a first round strategy. I think that's gonna be
- 22:29really interesting to see what Danny Breer and company does. What are your thoughts?
- 22:32So the one thing I'll say is, mate, maybe this isn't the
- 22:34case you take Mitch Cough because there is inherent risk involved there. But I
- 22:40think other than him, Like if it's not him, I think that I
- 22:44want to stress what happens at seven wouldn't really affect what I would do at
- 22:48number twenty two. I think that like you take the you take the best
- 22:52guy, you take that you think makes the most sense. The flyers,
- 22:53you need help everywhere, um, Like the prospect pool has guys everywhere,
- 22:57but you know there's no true blue chip guy I think at any position UM
- 23:03at this point unfortunately. So like I think you just want to add as
- 23:06many of those guys as you can. Like, if if there's a if
- 23:08you're really close between two guys in different positions, maybe you take the one
- 23:11you didn't take at seven, which will probably mean a defense would be it'd
- 23:17be a defenseman. But I don't I don't know for sure, but yeah,
- 23:19all of all ways saying I think you just take the best guy there.
- 23:23Um, of the two you mentioned, Edstrom is interesting. Um No,
- 23:29like you said Big Center. Um, you know the flyers have scouts
- 23:33out there. It'd be fun to see him what they do with a guy
- 23:34like that. He had a really good or he had him he had Edstrom
- 23:37had a good run at a at U eighteens Yep. Um, he'd be
- 23:41yeah, he'd he'd be a guy who makes sense for them. Um.
- 23:45There were a few names that um I liked there. Um you mentioned Natty
- 23:48she is she is slowly starting to talking me into Gavin Brindley, the winger
- 23:52at Michigan. Okay, Um, not a profile I in general like,
- 23:56but I think there there's something there. Um as you know a now granted
- 24:00he's you know, he's another winger I believe. So if you if you
- 24:03take a winger at seven, maybe maybe you wouldn't go that way. Um
- 24:07who was the one? Qu Quentin Musty I believe was another. It was
- 24:11another winger that I like. You guys took a huge step forward this year
- 24:14and Sudbury and the ohl Um guys like that, like Big Risers were guys
- 24:18that they liked a lot into the Hextall era. So granted that was a
- 24:19long time ago. Um, but like he went from at his number,
- 24:23I think he went from thirty one points last year to seventy eight this year
- 24:26and roughly the same number of games. Um. So you know, guys
- 24:29who take big steps like that, they have had interested in, Like you
- 24:32know, the scouting staff here which is largely been similar, they have had
- 24:34interesting guys like that in the past. Um yeah, a lot of different
- 24:38ways they go. You mentioned centers, um Calum Richie and Ashua is a
- 24:41guy I could very much see them having interest in. Again, just based
- 24:45on the profile, Um, you know a fairly you know, a big
- 24:48center, responsible two way game, has some um you know, has some
- 24:52some offensive talent, but like isn't probably gonna be overwhelming. I don't know
- 24:55if it's the pick i'd make, But again, a guy I could see
- 24:56them being interested in. Um yeah, there's in a draft like this,
- 25:00there are a lot of guys you could have some interest in. Um.
- 25:03I'd be I'd be lying if I said I add a good sense for what
- 25:07they'll do there. But there are definitely a lot of ways you can go
- 25:08absolutely absolutely, go ahead, going now, go ahead, Kurtin Oh no,
- 25:12no, I the names you mentioned Yeager and edst him again, especially
- 25:15if they end up with a winger at that first pick. I whether that
- 25:18should matter or not, I could see them going with a center at that
- 25:22second pick. Those are both ones that I think it makes sense for them.
- 25:25Yeager, Yeah, Yeager's an interesting one as well. Like you said,
- 25:27um, not a huge not like a huge guy. But when again,
- 25:32when you took a reasonable step forward this year at a like big like
- 25:34played really well for a Moose Joe in the playoffs or in the in the
- 25:38WHL playoffs. Um, yeah, he's a that's an interesting profile on him
- 25:42as well. Item. They've taken some big shot guys in the past,
- 25:47like which is what he is. Um, you know there's some similarities there
- 25:51to Tyson Forster, um Forresters, I guess a little bigger than him.
- 25:53I think, Um, Yeager's a little bit better a skater, but um,
- 25:59but yeah, I don't think that, And I don't think the fact
- 26:02that they need some playmakers in the system would scare them away from him.
- 26:03Again, if they like the talent, I think they should pull the trigger.
- 26:06No, matter what. Yeah, but yeah, again, a lot
- 26:08of different ways then go and it's exciting. It's what it's always so funny,
- 26:11Like I rarely get super invested in the draft because you spend a lot
- 26:15of time look at these guys and at the end only one of them ends
- 26:18up going to your team. Right now that there's two, Now that they
- 26:21have two, I get a little more interested in it. So that's that's
- 26:23what it takes to get me into the draft. Hey, whatever whatever happens
- 26:26with that number twenty two overall pick. You know, as we all know,
- 26:30they need help everywhere, they really do. So at the end of
- 26:34the day, that number twenty two overall pick, I'm probably gonna be pretty
- 26:38happy with it whatever direction they go. And Kurt, I gotta tell you
- 26:41it was a great conversation. Thank you so much for coming on the PSD
- 26:45podcast show here this week on our table talk pod. Really enjoyed talking to
- 26:48you. Let's have you on down the road if you don't mind, I
- 26:52would love to talk to you more. Shout this Flyers team in the direction
- 26:53they're going in. I don't want to wait so long to have you back
- 26:56on, so join us down the road. My friend awesome, No,
- 27:00thank you for having me fun as always, it was great having Kurt on
- 27:03and I gotta say and reflect on something that Lenz said back on our show
- 27:10from this past week. He used the word Flyers and the words good in
- 27:12the same sentence, something we have not heard in a long time. There's
- 27:17good stuff happening with this Flyers organization and team. As we're moving forward here,
- 27:21folks, it is very, very welcoming to see the type of moves
- 27:26that Danny Brier has been making thus far, and just the rumblings about what
- 27:30may be happening with this team in terms of this rebuild. You know,
- 27:33even though they're rumors out there. Of course rumors are rumors, but the
- 27:37fact that nothing is off the table with regard to the Philadelphia Flyers, it
- 27:41really says something about how this team wants to progress in the future. Danny
- 27:47Brier knows what needs to be done, I think, based on his creativity
- 27:49with that very first trade that he made. So remains to be seeing what
- 27:52happens with this draft. But we're gonna keep reading about these draft prospects.
- 27:56We're gonna keep looking into them here at the PST podcast show. We'll be
- 28:00talking about them a lot more in the coming weeks here, and that's gonna
- 28:04do it for us here on table talk. If you're on the Twitter dot
- 28:07com, follow us at Philadelphia p ST. You can follow me at Jeffrey
