Latest / Talkin' Tech / Off-Season Episode #7 - Defensive Line
Transcript
- 0:40SPEAKER_04: Hey everybody, um, we're gonna start off this podcast with uh some pretty tragic news.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: Um we were devastated to find out that uh Luke Siegel has passed away at the age of 15 uh after a battle with COVID and pneumonia.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: Um anybody that has been involved with Texas Tech knows uh been in the Lubbock area.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Everybody knows Luke's story, you know, uh just an unbelievably devastating injury that caused brain damage to him, and he fought like hell for five to six years and um he tragically passed away uh this Thursday.
- 1:20SPEAKER_04: Um you know we see these type of stories all the time.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: Um, but when it's right in your backyard, when it's when when it's with a kid that was so heavily uh influential in the Texas Tech community and the Lubbock community, uh it really hits you hard and it hits you home.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: Uh neither me nor Tristan had uh the pleasure of meeting Luke or or his or his dad Tim.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: Um but we know the type of kid he was just from his influence that he had.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: Um and you know, it's it's just devastating to see this news.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Um it's not something you you ever like to see on Twitter uh or anywhere.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: You just you just hate it for the family, you hate it for Texas Tech, and you hate it for the community.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: So uh we wanted to send our condolences uh to the Siegel family, uh, sending prayers their way.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Uh rest in peace, Luke.
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: We're always gonna be on team Luke.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: So um, all right, we're gonna get into uh the rest of the pod right now.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, rest in peace, Luke.
- 2:27SPEAKER_04: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Man, we are in the final countdown towards the season.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: What an off season it has been.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: But I'm really I'm ready to distract ourselves.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm ready to get away from this alignment, realignment talk, even though we're gonna dig into it a little bit more in this episode with some wacky rumors.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: But I am so ready to just start talking about tech football and talk about how happy or how gosh darn disappointed we are.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: I'm just ready to react genuinely.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm tired of making off the season content, but it's still fun stuff.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: But uh, how are you doing, dude?
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: I'm doing good.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: I am in the full mode of I am ready and I am I've I'm just convinced that we're gonna be better.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 3:21SPEAKER_04: And that could be so that could pain me.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: It's going to pain me if we are not good at football this year, because every single position group I'm looking at, I'm like, there's a chance that we're really good at that spot, you know, maybe except for defensive backs.
- 3:38SPEAKER_04: I that's like our weakest position.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: But even we're giving you the D-line episode right now, and our D-line's gonna be much better than it is in past years.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: And this is a Pac-12 podcast.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: So I just I don't want another bad season to to to rub the pac-12 the wrong way, saying, Hey, this isn't all the time, this is just the past 10 years.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: Please excuse it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_04: Okay, take out the last decade, and we've been great.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's only about half our lives.
- 4:09SPEAKER_03: So just please understand that this isn't all the time, not all the time.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: Pac-12 podcasts, talking tech.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: Um, but let's get into it, let's get into some stuff before we this is the D-line episode.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: We're gonna give you our top five defensive linemen of all time at Texas Tech history and talk about the upcoming Big 12 defensive lines and how they're gonna compare to one another.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: But we had some things that came out since last week.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: We had a great article come out by Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche Journal.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Don is a favorite on Talking Tech.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's obviously everybody knows who Don Williams is, if you're at around Texas Tech or in the Lubbock media, anything like that.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: But he really he talked to Kirby Hokut about all the recent realignment stuff.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: And this is, I mean, Kirby said some things, and uh President Scubenek put out an email to all the Texas Tech alumni basically saying, you know, hey, if you want to support us, if you want to support us through this whole process, come to the games and everything like that.
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: But um, this is the first time Kirby's really been real and had like a uh, you know, had multiple things to say about U TNOU leaving and where where Texas Tech is during this whole process.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: So um this this article was awesome.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: It was a great time to put it out.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Um, Kirby, uh you know, he just says so many good things that make you believe in him more.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: The guy the guy is good at a lot of things, but most of all, he's probably a really great speaker.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: He's really quick on his feet, he knows what to say, he knows what the audience wants to hear.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: And I've told y'all in private multiple times that I'm really happy that we have Kirby Hokut at this point in time because this is an AD that I think can push you into the future.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: The guy's very, very well connected.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: He seems like he works so dang hard and actually believes in Texas Tech.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: I really am grateful and grateful that we do have him.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and what he said in that article like really helps reassure you that they're they're doing everything they can.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: And the relationship between he and President Scubanek seems really tight because I think President Scubanek is probably the most sports-focused president we could have at this time.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: The guy loves his tech sports, he's always front and center, and you can see it in the Big 12 committees that were like going out and getting media rights and or leading any sort of uh any sort of inclusion into the contract of the Big 12.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: President Scubanek is there, he's in the leader of the committee, so it's really great to see.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: Um, and I I think we got some two great leaders right now.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, and and from Scubanek's standpoint, you have to really understand that he knows how important athletics are to Texas Tech and to the university, and in our future is uncertain, and that it needs, if it is put in that great spot, then we will be even better off for the future.
- 6:54SPEAKER_04: So he knows that for the university.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: Kirby How cut, obviously, it's his job.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: This is what we pay him a lot of money, a lot of money for.
- 7:03SPEAKER_04: So uh, but you're right, Kirby does talk, he knows how to speak to the audience, he knows what to do.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: Some people believe in him, some people don't, in terms of Texas Tech fans.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm I'm one that believes in Kirby Hokud.
- 7:15SPEAKER_04: I think, like you said, his connections, the uh the people that he has built relationships with throughout the years, uh, it it's really going to come into play right now.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: This is why you build those relationships.
- 7:28SPEAKER_04: This is why you have all these connections for in case your school is put in a position like this, uh, and and man, he just I mean, he's working his butt off.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: He told Don Williams that he's working 16 hours a day.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: He's on the phone.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: I mean, talking to commissioners.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: He said he's only talked to uh or he's talked to all the commissioners of other power conferences except for one.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: He didn't specify who it was, but uh you got to imagine that's probably the SEC.
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: But um, anyways, I mean, he's talking nonstop.
- 7:56SPEAKER_04: He's working.
- 7:57SPEAKER_04: This is his number one priority.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: He said he spent 100% of his time the last couple weeks on this, on where Texas Deck lands.
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: And that's what you need in an A D.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: This is the biggest moment of his entire life.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, maybe besides getting on one knee to ask his his his wife to marry him, I think this might be the biggest moment in his life.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Definitely the biggest moment in his professional life.
- 8:19SPEAKER_06: Oh, absolutely.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Um, everything he has an entire institution's future, a major institution, institution's future hinging on him, like on his ability to sell the university, on making the right meet on making the right relationships and making the right decisions.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: Obviously, Texas Tech has to do its job of selling itself as well, but he's the face of it towards these other conferences right now.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: So he has big pants to wear right now.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: And the way it sounds like it, the guy's been a workaholic as he should be.
- 8:48SPEAKER_03: Um, this is why you pay him so well.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: I'm not quite, I don't, I'm not sure if he's still, but I remember not that long ago.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: Whenever we were in school, the man was the best paid AD in the conference.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: He's still top five, yeah, in the entire country, the big 12.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, in the entire country.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: My gosh.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: So it's he's he's paid well because of what he's shown.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: And remember the bit the the conference.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: Uh I mean, the the uh college football playoff first got kicked off.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: He was the chairman, he was like the leader of it, he was the face of it.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: So the guy is so connected, the guy knows his college sports.
- 9:18SPEAKER_03: I'm glad uh President Scuban X there with him because you got to understand what could happen to Texas Tech if we don't land in a power five conference from a school standpoint.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: You know, being a school that's in big sports means a ton to the school culture, you know, it it's a huge part point of pride, it it really lights the the campus up every single week before, every Saturday before, every basketball night.
- 9:43SPEAKER_03: The whole campus is in and ready for it, and it brings you back to the town once you graduate, it keeps you connected to it.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: So if if we're not into the next big show, it can mean a drop in enrollment, a drop in attendance, and then just a flat out drop across the board for the whole campus.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it would be a big financial drop.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: Uh, in in, you know, I think we're gonna be fine.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: Like, like we keep saying on this podcast, I believe in Kirby Oka and I believe in President Scubanek to put us in a good position.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: Um, as this is all going down right now, it is a little scary.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: We all know it's a little scary.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: We're all thinking, hey, you know, we don't want to be in the AAC weird, like kind of G5 level, drop down a level.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: But uh, I think Texas Tech has enough to put itself back in a power five position.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: What's scary is all the media heads headhunting.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Like it seems like freaking everyone in the media seems to have some sort of vendetta against every single Big 12 team that's not UT and OU.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: And that's what's really frustrating, and that's what really drags on the morale of the fan bases.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: And it's totally understandable to have these respected names in sports journalism just sit there and say your school is worth nothing, that your school's worth even worse than the American and all that.
- 11:06SPEAKER_03: And we all, even though we all know it's not true, public perception is everything, you know.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: Like, obviously, fans of other conferences are gonna start like believing what these media heads have to say because obviously they don't really know what's going on inside these conferences.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Like, someone in California, they read these articles, they're just gonna make assumptions about what Texas Tech is, about what Oklahoma State is, when they don't really understand that they will, even though our stadium is bigger than pretty much every school in their conference and our fans care way more than even they do, it's just they don't understand it because these media heads, for some reason, want to make sure everyone believes that we're worth nothing.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: And that that does wear on you.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And but it's it's good that we keep the faith, it's good that we have these leaders, but it is so frustrating because you love something so much and you care about something so much, you put your money and your time to support it to see these guys say it's worth nothing.
- 11:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, that's the most frustrating part of all this.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: Um, and and you know, to opposing teams and opposing, you know, alumni of other universities, they they don't know, and they can't truly know unless you're engulfed in the culture and actually know, you know, you play these teams on a consistent basis and you know their fans travel, everything like that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I don't I don't really blame a UCLA fan for not knowing a lot about Texas Tech, but that is the effect that the national media has on people.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: You know, that's what they're looking at when they think about Texas Tech.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: They don't know anything about the university, so you know, they're gonna look at what uh whoever has to say about it on ESPN or on whoever.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, that's a big driving force around it, but um it's it's it's a whole deal, man.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: It's a whole deal right now.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: It's just so frustrating because you you have these journalists that say they love the sport, but all they want is a conglomerate conglomeration of super teams that just stay together.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: But it's like, dude, so you just want the NFL.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: I I don't I if you want the NFL, just watch the NFL, it's there for you, you know.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: So if it this that's that's not what college football is, and it's sad to see some of them cheerleading the death of it on.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but there was one that was not cheerleading it on, and I don't know if it's technically national media, I don't know, but there was some rumors that were flying.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: And and listen, I'm not trying to say that these rumors have any bearing to them or anything like that, but it was fun to see for that one day on Twitter that this guy, Greg Swame, uh, I don't know, uh, he's a radio host, he's been in the business a long time.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: Apparently, he's got sources that are saying the SEC is potentially looking to add even more teams than what uh they've already added in Texas and Oklahoma.
- 13:44SPEAKER_04: Apparently, according to this guy, uh, and less and I know disclaimer, this is one guy.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: This is one guy on Twitter, but it's fun to talk about.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: Um, he has said that the SEC might want to lock down the entire state of Texas and try to add Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, and then Oklahoma State on top of it to make a 20-team conference.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Um to me, this rumor is a rumor.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: It's uh I don't think it has any sort of uh any sort of truth to it, but it's fun to think about.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech and the SEC.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's fun to think about because it's an instant relief, it's instant safety.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be in the biggest, wealthiest, most uh talked about conference in the country immediately.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Um, so that that's what that's what's really fun about it, but it's just you try to find in your brain where you can connect legitimacies to this rumor, and it's hard to find.
- 14:46SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 14:47SPEAKER_04: There's there's hardly any legitimacy to this rumor.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: This is one guy that said this.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's a guy who's got several thousand followers on Twitter, so you know, and he's been in the business, but uh, you know, it there's just gonna be so many different rumors that are gonna fly around during realignment.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: Well, because if if don't you think if maybe the SEC was interested in this kind of move, the UT and OU would have gone ahead and went to President Scubanek and to Oklahoma State's president and said, Hey, we're gonna do this.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Let's ditch the sinking ship and go make oogles of money in the SEC, or you're coming with us.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: No, I don't find it.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: Right now, I think this is because I think a part of this is OU and UT are trying to shake us off, they're trying to shave off the competition, and they're trying to hog all the recruits and money to themselves by taking their ball and going to the SEC and leaving us.
- 15:46SPEAKER_03: I think that's the main point.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: But even if you're looking from the SEC point, I I think that perhaps you would have tried to force the conversation earlier than now if this was going to be the case.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's true.
- 15:59SPEAKER_04: Um, I think from UT and OU's perspective, obviously try to get away from all the Texas schools that you can.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: AM did that and it worked out great for them.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: And now UT is trying to just, you know, do the same thing.
- 16:13SPEAKER_04: Um, but um from an SEC perspective, I do understand trying to lock down the entire state of Texas.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: I do get that.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: I uh it's it's it's the best state for college football recruits.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 16:27SPEAKER_04: It's that I mean, California, Florida, Ohio, you can argue whatever you want, but Texas is probably the best, and I think it's by a significant margin.
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: So I can understand trying to lock down the Texas schools.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, and and again to what this guy was was saying, is that the SEC is trying to respond to this rumor that the Big Ten, the Pac-12, and the ACC are trying to do this little scheduling alliance.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: That was also an article that came out uh by the Athletic saying that they were trying to respond to this SEC adding Texas and Oklahoma and try to, you know, make sure that they're set uh themselves in this, and the SEC was responding back to that.
- 17:09SPEAKER_04: So I it's just so much, man, with this realignment stuff.
- 17:12SPEAKER_04: It's it's crazy what people are saying these days.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's really disappointing to see the Big 12 is left out of those talks.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Um, and it it seems really pr uh preliminary because I don't necessarily know how much those conferences gain by gluing themselves to each other.
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, the bit the Big Ten at this moment in time is the wealthiest conference in the country.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, obviously that will change once OU and UT join the SEC, but what does the Big Ten really gain by connecting themselves to the two poorest P5s in the league in the in the nation?
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Because the Big 12 is still technically the third wealthiest conference in the country, which which just reminds you to pull your hair out during all these conversations, right?
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Um uh, but it's it it seems more just an X, you know, explore the the situation, you know, to explore to see if this is viable, because I don't think anything will really come of it.
- 18:09SPEAKER_03: And I don't think the SEC is threatened by it either, because the SEC is about to just sit in a bathtub full of money.
- 18:16SPEAKER_03: Um, and I don't know if other conferences making money is really a danger because the thing with them is they're torpedoing the Big 12.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: If they torpedo the Big 12, they don't really have to worry about tech Baylor and TCU potentially, because potentially they're gonna be out of the power five picture in Oklahoma State as well.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: So, and it it's just it seems kind of castle in the sky, like absolute rumor of rumor to believe that the SEC would feel desperate enough to do that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying you're desperate to get those teens, I'm just saying that it it doesn't seem like they would make that sort of move just from a rumor, oh not really a rumor, but from preliminary talks amongst PowerPibe conferences.
- 18:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: Um, again, these are all rumors, these are all uh plenty more articles are gonna come out like this, uh, and plenty more people are gonna say they have sources inside and all this kind of stuff.
- 19:12SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't expect Texas Tech to go to the SEC.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, this is fun.
- 19:20SPEAKER_04: This is fun to think about.
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, if we are, if the off chance that we are offered by the SEC, I would say 100% Texas Tech needs to do it, but that's just in the off chance.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, 100%.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: If if you have a lifeline to what's going to be potentially the one of the only conferences that even matter in the sport, you better do it.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's it'd be absolutely asinine if you don't even if you think twice about it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: So, and obviously, I know President Skupinek and Kirby Hoka would be like, of course, we'll we'll go with y'all.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: No, 100%.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Because not only that, you get your Marquee games back, you get Texas and AM automatically and Lubbock, and that that's huge, and that's big for them too.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: Hosting the Red Raiders will be big for them too.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: And I don't want to hear any disagreement with that at all.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: Um, because I I 100% think AM and UT hosting Texas Tech is a bigger deal than hosting Mississippi State.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: That's not a knock on the Bulldogs, but seriously, don't even act like that's not the case.
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: A Texas Tech fan cares more about playing Texas AM than a Mississippi State fan cares about playing Texas AM.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: That's just what it is.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, you can say that pretty much about any of the SEC teams, though.
- 20:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, tech banks would care way.
- 20:29SPEAKER_04: You can say that about Alabama, LSU, any of that.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: I know, I know AM wants to push this whole LSU rivalry.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: It's not a rivalry, not a rivalry.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: You can't make rivalries like that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: That just doesn't happen.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: LSU doesn't have a rivalry, they're like us.
- 20:42SPEAKER_04: No, dude, I've been living in Baton Rouge for a long time, and they care nothing about Texas AM.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: They don't hate them, they don't, they're just like very indifferent about Texas AM.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 20:54SPEAKER_03: The only thing that even comes close is like Alabama, and that's every SEC team's gonna say, gotta hate Alabama, obviously.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so until they obviously until the postseason, we're like, oh Alabama, let's go, SEC baby.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: Let's go, let's go, yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: But um, that's besides the point.
- 21:11SPEAKER_03: I and uh it's if if you're given the offer, obviously you take it.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: But I know you and I kind of have a had a bit of a discussion about this last night about would you rather see Texas Tech in the SEC or the Pac 12?
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: And obviously, whenever I said that, you know, here's my take is I originally said that perhaps I would rather see us in the Pac 12.
- 21:31SPEAKER_03: I think that might be more my reactionary Tex Tech fan speaking, because this whole time we're like, I am so done with UT and OU, and I'm so done with AM, I'm so done with those fans.
- 21:43SPEAKER_03: I want tech to be its own thing for a while, and I still kind of feel that way.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: And I think the Pac 12 is a great option for that.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't I don't think I think I think either one is ideal because they both have their pluses, but they both have their cons.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: What do you have to say about it?
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: I well, obviously, I think I'd rather be in the SEC than the Pac-12.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: Why?
- 22:05SPEAKER_04: Um, because the main argument against being in the SEC is you're still with UT and UT has that stranglehold.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: UT would not have nearly the same stranglehold on the SEC that they had in the Big 12.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: They ran the Big 12 conference.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: They are not going to run the SEC.
- 22:25SPEAKER_04: They're not going to do that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: And they're not going to have as big a say in certain decisions.
- 22:29SPEAKER_04: They're not, there's no way in hell if they were in the SEC, they would have had the Longhorn Network.
- 22:34SPEAKER_04: That would not have happened.
- 22:35SPEAKER_04: I think you're playing your rivals, like you said earlier.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: It's just more fun to play Texas and Texas A M and OU than to play Oregon and USC and Washington.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: It just is.
- 22:47SPEAKER_04: I mean, you have the people that you grew up with, it's better rivalries, it's all that sort of stuff.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: Geographically, it makes more sense.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Um, and you make more money.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, I really don't see any more any cons.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: I guess you could say if Texas had goes to the Pac-12, they're their own, the only Texas school in the Pac 12.
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: Um, they could potentially have more success in the Pac-12 athletically.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I just don't see if you're offered both admittance to both conference, you take the SEC, I think, a hundred times out of a hundred.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: I think, yeah, I think you take the SEC 100 times out of 100 because of stability, first and foremost.
- 23:27SPEAKER_03: That that conference isn't going anywhere.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: And and second, the money, obviously, because that's what the the the the athletic departments care about the most.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: And third, you got you like you said, you got to play your rivals.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: Um, I I think I'm probably gonna go lean your way because I'm just ready for some stability, dang it.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: But something to consider is if Texas Tech make takes their ball and goes to Pac 12 is the only team, or maybe we have like a baylor or a TCU with us, unlikely, or an Oklahoma state, you get to kind of form your own identity.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: And I think there's something to be said about that.
- 24:03SPEAKER_03: Not even just form your own identity, you actually have a chance to win in the Pac-12.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: I'm not trying to say that the SEC is this this this uh giga robot, death robot that you just can never overcome.
- 24:17SPEAKER_03: I I'm saying that whenever you're in a conference with a team like Alabama, the greatest, easily the greatest team of the modern era, even outside of Nick Saban, they're still probably gonna be so gosh darn good.
- 24:29SPEAKER_03: Um, and you're you're you're just dealing with other brands that are gonna just pour way more into their programs to win it than you are in the Pac-12.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: It's just gonna be the case of the it's just reality.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: I think TechSteck has a better chance of winning 10 games in the Pac-12 than they do the SEC.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: Like, am I happier as a tech fan winning three or four games in a season in the SEC than I am winning eight games in the Pac-12, you know, like in an in a normal season?
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: I I just think the slope gets really hard.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: I feel like we'd kind of be in a maybe in a slightly better situation than Arkansas.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: Maybe we're like in a more Missouri sort of position where we're kind of overlooked, we're not making a lot of noise, you know, we're kind of just another team on the schedule, or we want to go be the big old Texas team in the Pac-12 is kind of my thing with it.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: I get you.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: I get you from a fan perspective.
- 25:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, you want to see more wins.
- 25:23SPEAKER_04: You obviously do.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: That's that's you know the thing.
- 25:26SPEAKER_04: But um, I think the rivalries, the money, and everything overcomes that uh when it comes to the SEC.
- 25:34SPEAKER_04: Uh I I'm a believer that uh nothing is inevitable.
- 25:41SPEAKER_04: Um the Alabama is under Nick Saban is not gonna be Alabama under Nick Saban forever.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: They're just not.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: I don't think and and you know it may be 10, 20 years until Nick Saban actually retires, but after Nick Saban leaves, it's not gonna be the same.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: That man is a generational head coach.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: He's the greatest college football coach of all time.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: He is, he is, he's the greatest football coach of all the greatest college football coach of all time.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: Um, so I do not think Alabama is going to be this dominant for the rest of eternity.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: I don't think that.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: I I do understand that you do have to go through a much, much more difficult slope in the SEC than the Pac-12.
- 26:24SPEAKER_04: Alabama, LSU, uh Florida, Georgia, whoever.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, you have to go through all those.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: But also maintaining those games against UT and AM, maintaining those potentially Baylor or TCU if they're invited as well, Oklahoma State.
- 26:38SPEAKER_04: That's just more fun.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: That's more fun to play those teams than it is to play Pac-12 teams.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: It just is.
- 26:45SPEAKER_04: And absolutely, and for me, you playing UT, having UT in your conference where they don't have a stranglehold over it is much better than playing UT in the Big 12.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: It's just the the SEC is just dominated by certain powers.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: I know that usually goes that goes for every conference.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: I get that, but it's just the stranglehold that some of these teams have in the SEC is just it's bigger than others.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: Like with the Pac-12, yeah, the USC in Oregon.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: After that, it gets really, you know, kind of skimpy, you know, it just with the SEC.
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: Sure, Nick Sabins, Alabama isn't going to always be Nick Sabins, Alabama, but you also have to deal with recent national champion LSU.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: We also deal with Florida, who's got a long history, and you know, you teams like South Carolina who pour a lot of resources, get great recruits, they're never gonna win an SEC championship.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: And I just I don't I don't know if I necessarily see uh a Texas Tech who is not really in a better position than a South Carolina ever coming in and doing that.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: I want to see a gosh darn championship in my life.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: Like, is that so much to ask?
- 27:49SPEAKER_03: I don't I mean, I know as a Texas Tech fan, you're you're really only supposed to expect a few, you know.
- 27:55SPEAKER_03: Like you want to see you, you want to see your team make a run every five or six years, like a real run, you know.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: And that's I think that's I think that's a realistic stance.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: And I think it's I don't think that makes me less of a fan to expect that, you know.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Uh I expect to go to a bowl game every year.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: That's and that should be a minimum.
- 28:10SPEAKER_03: But like making a real run to win a freaking trophy to be solidified in time every four to six years, I think is acceptable.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: I don't know if you get that in the SEC.
- 28:21SPEAKER_03: I think you see, I think you keep that in the Pac 12 because I think your schedule gets easier than then it's it than it is in the Big 12.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: You definitely get that much more often in the Pac-12 than in the SEC.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: I agree with you on that.
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: Um, I just think every other thing that's gone against you in the argument overpowers it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: And um I get it from a fan's perspective.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: Yes, I would rather have more 10 win seasons than five win seasons, you know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: But that's kind of the state in what we're in.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: I think there's also something to the other sports.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: I think in basketball, we would be competitive with any freaking team in the SEC right now.
- 28:54SPEAKER_04: Baseball, same deal.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: So um at least we get that, and that's not much different from where we are right now in our current position, uh, where basketball and baseball are competitive and football isn't.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: Um, I think the SEC obviously it generates more money.
- 29:09SPEAKER_04: Uh, you have uh more resources, you can now reach different uh areas of the country that you possibly couldn't have reached before because you're now an SEC school.
- 29:18SPEAKER_04: So I think Texas Tech could be better.
- 29:21SPEAKER_04: I don't think we're gonna be better um than what we are right now.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: I think potentially if we lose if we move to the SEC, uh, we could have more resources to potentially be better and be more competitive than what we are right now.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: That's a good point.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: We're talking about this from a very football-centric point because it's A, we're on the horizon of football season.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: And and football is centric.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: It's the driving, it's the driving engine, yes.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, you're right.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: In basketball, we'd be immediate top half contenders immediately.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Easy.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: Um, and it's same in baseball.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: I think being in the SEC would do amazing things for baseball, it really would, because that the SEC is a hardcore baseball conference, they put together a lot of great teams in that league.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Um, and the and everyone already knows that Texas Tech has established itself as a power in the entire country.
- 30:11SPEAKER_03: So the SEC would love to have a Texas Tech in the SEC, but um, in that in that regard, but it it it that's those those are great points, man.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: And I I just I guess the argument I'm trying to make for the Pac-12 as opposed to the SEC is how much as a fan do you want to win versus how much as a fan do you want to see us play continue to play UT and A and M.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: There, I don't necessarily think one argument's more correct than the next, but if you're a fan that cares about Texas Tech's future, you just got to go ahead and say the SEC because it's not going anywhere.
- 30:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: And this is like you said, you're not really wrong either way here.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: Uh, if you want Texas Tech would obviously win more if we went to the Pac 12 versus the SEC, but you know, you it's hard to turn down that stability and that financial revenue and all that sort of stuff.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: So um, and and like like I said uh a few pods ago, Texas Tech needs to move with the curve and not against the curve here.
- 31:12SPEAKER_04: So I, you know, joining the Pac 12 is a much riskier move than joining the SEC.
- 31:17SPEAKER_04: But uh let's move on because this has been this has been a whole lot.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: We've been we've gone a lot uh before this is the D line episode.
- 31:24SPEAKER_04: We're talking about defensive linemen here.
- 31:26SPEAKER_04: The big boys, the big boy, the second big boys, yeah.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: Big boy part two, big boy part two.
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: We talked about the offensive linemen already, we've talked about pretty much every position except for the defensive line, and special teams will come next week, but let's talk defensive line, dude.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: We got uh some strong defensive lines in the Big 12 this year.
- 31:45SPEAKER_04: Uh it's been fun looking at the research for these schools.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Um, I think Texas Tech is going to have a very, very much improved defensive line unit uh from the past, you know, whatever, five, 10 years.
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: Um, but I think we're gonna have a really good defensive line this year.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: Me too, man.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: It's it's like we keep coming back to the the defensive improvement under Matt Wells has been the most welcomed one.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's it's finally nice to see actually some decent defense play.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying we're out here uh blocking every dang play, but it's it has been nice to watch, and it's gonna be interesting to see how we measure up in one of the last seasons of the Big 12 here.
- 32:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:27SPEAKER_04: So let's get into it.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: Let's get into it.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech defensive line versus the Big 12.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: We're gonna do our famous talking tech tiers list uh for the Big 12 teams this coming football season.
- 32:43SPEAKER_04: Tier one.
- 32:44SPEAKER_04: Let's get into it on an island of their own.
- 32:47SPEAKER_04: It's the Sooners, it's Oklahoma, they are fantastic.
- 32:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, I told y'all uh when we talked about the linebackers that I was gonna put Nick Benito on the defensive line list because he is more of a pass rusher.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: Dude's a potential Big 12 defensive player of the year.
- 33:03SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's unbelievable.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: He's a fantastic player.
- 33:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, they also have guys like LaRon Stokes, Perrin Winfrey, and Isaiah Thomas that bring experience this defensive line.
- 33:13SPEAKER_04: Um, they're just gonna be awesome.
- 33:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, Texas or uh Texas Tech.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: I wish it was Texas Tech.
- 33:18SPEAKER_04: Oklahoma's defensive line is going to be awesome.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: This is the biggest reason why they're considered a national championship favorite this year.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: It's because of the improvement on the defense.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: Like, obviously, everyone expects the offense to be absolutely unbelievable because it is every single year, but it's this is this is why this is the first OEU team that is getting this much national championship hype in a long time.
- 33:42SPEAKER_03: Since I since I literally, since I paid attention to the sport, this is as this is the most OU's ever gotten for the national championship spot.
- 33:49SPEAKER_03: And this is why Alex Grinch has done a great job there.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: Um, Lincoln Riley can recruit his butt off.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: I really wish that Red Raider was on was on our side.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: But uh, me too.
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: This is this is painful to talk about because you know, I really do not like the Sooners.
- 34:03SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's it's undeniable.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: Yep, they are.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: They're they're gonna be great.
- 34:08SPEAKER_04: If I had an AP vote, I would have put them number one even over Alabama.
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, they're they have uh it's hard to find a position where they're not very good at this season.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: So uh OU is gonna be awesome.
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: Uh, but let's move on.
- 34:21SPEAKER_04: Tier two.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: I have probably the most teams I've ever had in a tier two category.
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: I have Iowa State, I have Texas, I have TCU, and I have West Virginia in tier two.
- 34:32SPEAKER_04: Um, they're just uh all four of these teams have solid O line, or I'm sorry, I keep saying O-lines.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: All four of these, all four of these teams have solid defensive lines.
- 34:44SPEAKER_04: Um, Iowa State has been in either tier one or tier two of every single one of these positional groups.
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: I think they're severely underrated this season, even though my hot take was saying they're gonna lose more games than what we all think.
- 34:56SPEAKER_04: Um uh let's talk about Iowa State.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: They're losing Jaquan Bailey, he was a fantastic player for them.
- 35:02SPEAKER_04: But what they are getting back is Will McDonald, who returns.
- 35:05SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's coming off of a 10 and a half sack season last year.
- 35:09SPEAKER_04: Uh oh god, this guy's name.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: Uh Ioma Owarzaruke.
- 35:15SPEAKER_04: I I think I said his name right.
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: If I didn't, I apologize.
- 35:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's their top inside guy.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: He's six foot six, he's 310 pounds, he has great size.
- 35:22SPEAKER_04: Uh, Iowa State's defensive line is going to be good.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Uh man, I bring it up every single defensive episode with Iowa State, is just what Matt Campbell has done to counter the Big 12 offenses.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Thanks, I you know, kind of kind of a hot take.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: Matt Campbell is what changed the people that actually care about and pay attention to the Big 12, changed the narrative with the Big 12 defenses single-handedly because the guy figured out how to slow down Big 12 offenses, which is contribute to the success.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: Obviously, that starts at a D line.
- 35:54SPEAKER_03: So that this man is going to put together a solid unit.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: I'm not surprised to hear this.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: And I I get triggered every single time I see a Big 12 defense meme because it's just what year do you live in anymore, man?
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: So um, it's it's this this guy, this, this guy's units have seriously done that.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think it's pretty clear to me that uh Matt Campbell and uh Gary Patterson are the two best defensive-minded head coaches in the Big 12 currently.
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, but let's talk about TCU.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: They're also in tier two.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: Oshawn Mathis returns, he's one of the best defensive players in the Big 12 coming back.
- 36:31SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's probably gonna be a day two NFL draftee.
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: Um, Colt Ellison and Dylan Horton are two edge guys that should make an impact.
- 36:38SPEAKER_04: They also have a lot of talented underclassmen and a slew of experienced veterans on this team.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: So TCU defensive, it just makes sense to put them at tier two.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: It's sweaty G pad.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, we just just just plug it into D2.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, tier two into all the uh the tier list with defense.
- 36:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: So uh we have to talk about the Longhorns too, they're in tier two.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Uh Key Andrew talent only, though, right?
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, come on, you know, it's talent only, but we also have they've had some guys that have already proved it that they can be awesome.
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: Uh Keandre Coburn is one of those guys.
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: Um, and they're just, I mean, they just have a lot of depth.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: Like, like you said, it's talent.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, you the talent is always undeniable with UT.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Uh, they bring in some of the best guys every year, and it's just they haven't been able to put it together.
- 37:23SPEAKER_04: So hopefully they won't be able to put it together this year, but uh the talent is there, and that's why they're in tier two.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: I just say God bless UT coaches and neptitudes to develop said talent.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, I yeah, tier two, but I guess we'll see.
- 37:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, seriously.
- 37:40SPEAKER_04: And then West Virginia also brings up uh in tier two.
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, this is the highest I put West Virginia other than the running back episode.
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, we said last week that West Virginia just does not have a ton of talent, but they do on this defensive line.
- 37:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, Dante Stills is taking over.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: Uh, Darius Stills, they had both of the Stills brothers last year.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: Darius went to the NFL.
- 38:02SPEAKER_04: Dante is still here, so he's going to be the anchor of this defensive line.
- 38:05SPEAKER_04: Jeffrey Pooler and Akeem Messador are also two guys that are looking to make a leap and be uh really good on that defensive line.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: The Still brothers are the biggest things on the West Virginia teams, obviously, maybe outside Dougie just because he's a quarterback.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: Um, so it's it's scary to see that we they still have some of those guys.
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: Those guys are studs.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad it's minus one, but obviously can't ignore the one.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: They still probably are the most famous players on the team.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Dante is going to be awesome this season.
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: That's why I have him in tier two.
- 38:34SPEAKER_04: But let's talk about tier three because I have our boys from Texas Tech in tier three, along with the Cowboys of Oklahoma State.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: They are also in tier three.
- 38:44SPEAKER_04: Um, let's talk Texas Tech.
- 38:46SPEAKER_04: Let's talk our defensive line.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: Um, we are going to be much improved from the past couple seasons.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: Even Coach Keith Patterson and Matt Wells have both said that they're excited for this defensive line, that they think it's going it's one of the best that they've had in a long time.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: Uh, everybody knows if you've been paying attention to Texas Tech, athletics, social media, and everything like that.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: Jalen Hutchings and Tony Bradford, those two guys are not only hilarious, but they're great on the field when they're healthy.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that's the thing.
- 39:15SPEAKER_04: You know, they got to stay healthy, they got to be able to play uh multiple games.
- 39:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, I mean, it's a long season in the Big 12.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: So these two guys on the inside are going to be awesome for us uh on that defensive line and nose tackle.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: Their videos have been awesome.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: I mean, seeing those things pop up on Twitter, they're great.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and I mean, you know what I'm excited about those videos for is seeing that some defensive linemen have taken up a leadership role on the team.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Obviously, whenever you're you're hosting these videos and leading those kinds of projects, that means the coaches think highly of you.
- 39:45SPEAKER_03: This, the the department thinks highly of you.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see these guys on the football field in the real time because it sounds like they've shown it and I'm ready to see it.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: And now they have some experience under their belt.
- 39:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, these guys have been on the team now for two, three years, uh, and they're gonna really they're leaders in the locker room and on the field.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: So uh really excited to see how Hutchings and Bradford do this season.
- 40:07SPEAKER_04: Uh, we also have guys coming in on the defensive end to coming in as edge rushers.
- 40:11SPEAKER_04: Tyree Wilson, I'm really excited about this guy.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was the AM transfer last season, came in and had some great games last season, so showed some real signs of being an effective player.
- 40:23SPEAKER_04: Him and Nelson Mbanasaur are going to be awesome on the edge rushing unit.
- 40:29SPEAKER_04: Um, uh, we're replacing Eli Howard.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: Eli Howard was a longtime Texas Tech Red Raider, he was here for a long time, but I think these guys can uh more than make up for the production.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be nice to hit the refresh button on that, though.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna I'm excited to see some new guys on the sides there.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: And you're right.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I completely forgot about our AM transfer and actually a good Aggie becoming a red raider.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: That's what we're talking about.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: So that's what we like to see.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: That's what we like to see.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: Um, so I'm excited to see that.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: You know, it it's I'm I'm we're actually pretty pumped about these this defensive unit as a whole.
- 41:01SPEAKER_03: So it's good to hear that even on the front lines, we're excited about it.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt.
- 41:05SPEAKER_04: And we got some young guys here that could, you know, potentially take on a bigger role than uh what you know, and in case injuries have injuries do happen, you know, it's tough to rely on four guys all season to be your main defensive lineman.
- 41:17SPEAKER_04: So uh look for Philip Blitty, look for Devin Drew, look for Troy Tao, look for LB Moore to provide depth for these guys to take over on some snaps and to potentially, you know, get some get some good numbers here.
- 41:30SPEAKER_04: Uh this is a deep, uh, I think a deeper unit than what we've had in the past.
- 41:34SPEAKER_04: It's a little unknown.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: That's why I'm putting them in tier three, but I think this is a better unit than what we've had the past couple of years.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: I'll take one great tech defense, please.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: I'll take one.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: I'll order up, order up right now.
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: Please, we just need something.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: Get something to where the linebackers don't have so much on them because we have such a good linebacking unit that we don't need to spend all our time and energy also rushing the quarterback.
- 41:57SPEAKER_04: We need these guys to put some pressure on them.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: Please, let's not make linebackers just absolute superstars in a good way.
- 42:04SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, seriously.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: We say that in the best of ways.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, man, let's talk Oklahoma State because they're also in tier three.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, they have the front two of Israel Antoine and Sion Asi.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: They're both 300 pounders, they're both big boys pushing up the middle there.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Uh, Trace Ford and Tyler Lacey are the pass rushers on this unit.
- 42:25SPEAKER_04: Um, Ford is coming off of an ACL injury.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: So if he can return to form, he was awesome when he was playing and fully healthy.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: So uh Oklahoma State will have a solid unit a little below what the other four in tier two were, though.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: You know, Oklahoma State has kind of been pretty low on most of your list, I must say.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: I them in West Virginia, man.
- 42:46SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm like, I just don't see it.
- 42:49SPEAKER_04: Uh, and and Gundy can prove me wrong, and Neil Brown can prove me wrong.
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: I think that's why uh people have such a high opinion of these two schools, is because of the coaching, and that does go a long way.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: I've just I'm looking at a talent perspective, I'm looking at these players uh individually, and you know, if you get the right coach to tell you what to do, it goes a long way in college football.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: But uh, in terms of talent, it's tough to put these guys higher than what I put them.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Look, man, I appreciate it.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: These are two schools that I expect to be on par with, you know, like Texas Tech should always at least be in that range.
- 43:23SPEAKER_03: So it's if it if if if we can't finally top both of them in one season, I mean I'm ready for it for the love of God.
- 43:31SPEAKER_04: You know, this is one of the first years that I've actually put us on par with those other schools.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: You know, I've always thought Texas Tech the last couple of years is is a step below Oklahoma State, is a step below West Virginia.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: Right now, I really think with the talent, with the talent on this roster, we should be competitive with both of these schools.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: And it will, it won't just be oh, okay, we lost Oklahoma State.
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: We were supposed to lose to them.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: It's we should be competitive and should probably beat Oklahoma State and West Virginia.
- 43:59SPEAKER_04: So uh That's a little different from this season.
- 44:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, it it might just be me being ready and being really high on this Texas Tech team, but I know a lot of people are with me on that.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: It's funny, like when we're weird at tech, we didn't beat Oklahoma State or West Virginia once, and then now since we've been gone, we've beaten West Virginia twice in a row, and we beat Oklahoma State a couple times.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, it's crazy.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: I know it's us, we ruin everything, but it's we just as soon as we get in the sphere, things go down.
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: It's it's refreshing to see us beat those teams, but can we please act like we beat those teams for the rest of the season?
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, please.
- 44:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, please.
- 44:35SPEAKER_04: Let's let's beat some more teams.
- 44:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, like you said, but tier four.
- 44:40SPEAKER_04: Let's go tier four.
- 44:41SPEAKER_04: I got Baylor and K-State.
- 44:43SPEAKER_04: K-State is not gonna have a good defensive team this year, which is very, very surprising.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, like you keep saying with Kansas State, you just expect them to have a good defense every single year.
- 44:56SPEAKER_04: Um, they are uh not a lot of people are high on this Kansas State team.
- 45:00SPEAKER_04: That's why I have them in tier four.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: They lose Wyatt Hubert.
- 45:04SPEAKER_04: He is a really tough loss for the K-State front.
- 45:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, they're gonna rely on Bronson Massey and uh Charlotte transfer Timmy Horn to be somewhat bright spots on this very mad D line.
- 45:17SPEAKER_03: We're really gonna start seeing some Bill Snyder attrition.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it this is gonna be Chris Kleiman's teams now.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: You know, he hit these following the footsteps of the greatest coach that's ever stepped foot on that campus.
- 45:27SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna finally start seeing the regression that's gonna be felt probably.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just and that's not a knock on Chris Kleiman, but whenever you're following the greatest coach in that school's history, it's gonna be pretty tough.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: So it's tough to follow up, uh, an all-time great, but uh you know, case not just an all-time great, the greatest that's true ever seen.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: The greatest.
- 45:48SPEAKER_03: They named the stadium after him.
- 45:50SPEAKER_03: That's how great he was.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:52SPEAKER_04: That's I mean, he deserved it because he brought Kansas State from the absolute gutter to uh competitive, you know.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they got a couple Big 12 championships under his belt, and I'm very jealous.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: I'd like one or two of those.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: I would like one this year, maybe.
- 46:11SPEAKER_04: Oh, I hope so.
- 46:13SPEAKER_04: Oh no, me too.
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: Tier four Baylor.
- 46:16SPEAKER_04: Baylor was awful on their defensive line last year, they were exceptionally terrible.
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: Um, they are gonna be a little better.
- 46:25SPEAKER_04: They bring in LSU transfer, psycha Ika, uh, from LSU.
- 46:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, they also have TJ Franklin, Gabe Hall, and oh my god, Chidi Obanaya.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm gonna say is his name again.
- 46:40SPEAKER_04: I apologize if I'm butchering all these names.
- 46:42SPEAKER_04: Um, their defensive ends that are gonna potentially bring that line back up from a terrible 2020 season.
- 46:50SPEAKER_03: I mentioned it in the last episode.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: It's it's Dave Aranda's defensive mind.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: It's not surprising that he's bringing his defensive guys that he coached at LLC over to Baylor.
- 46:58SPEAKER_03: That's not a surprise at all.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: And obviously, those are some good gets.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: So it's uh I'm sure the guy can put together something decent, but I'm glad to hear that you think that they're gonna be in that tier.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: I hope so.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: I hope they're at this tier.
- 47:09SPEAKER_04: This isn't really hope.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: I I think they're actually gonna be right there with K-State, uh, a step below tech and Oklahoma State and everybody else.
- 47:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, and then hey, guess what?
- 47:18SPEAKER_04: Tier five, aka tier Kansas.
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: Tier Kansas.
- 47:22SPEAKER_04: Are they alone?
- 47:23SPEAKER_04: Tier Kansas is alone in this episode on the defensive line unit.
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, they actually had some bright spots last year.
- 47:30SPEAKER_04: They had Marcus Harris and they had DeJon Henry, both of them transferred.
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: Uh uh, and so they're just kind of left with uh a bunch of transfers that um uh new coach uh Lance Leepold has brought in.
- 47:45SPEAKER_04: Um, maybe they can be competitive, they probably won't.
- 47:48SPEAKER_04: They are Kansas football.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, that's why I have them in tier five, aka tier Kansas.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: Tier Kansas, end of season.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: Tier Kansas.
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: It's tough.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: It's tough for them.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: It's really tough to be a Jayhawk football fan right now.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was also really tough to be a Texas Tech fan a couple of years ago, but it's it's it was really tough to be a Texas Tech fan last season.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm talking losing to Kansas, but okay.
- 48:15SPEAKER_04: We're not gonna talk about that.
- 48:16SPEAKER_04: No, this is a positive Pac-12 podcast.
- 48:20SPEAKER_04: This is a positive Texas Tech Pac-12 podcast.
- 48:24SPEAKER_04: And all right, that's it.
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: That's my tiers.
- 48:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, we are in tier three in this one, uh, a little lower than you know some of the other tiers, but uh, I think we have potential to possibly move up.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: I do too.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: You know, like I agree with the coaches being excited about the defensive unit uh because they've shown some progress through the years.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited to see what Coach Patterson's got for us because I'm feeling good.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: Me too, me too.
- 48:51SPEAKER_04: But you know who we can feel good about is our famous defensive linemen throughout the years, our Texas Tech defensive big boys that have brought us great, you know, just just big time, just good defense, good defense from all these guys.
- 49:07SPEAKER_04: We have our top five Texas Tech defensive linemen of all time.
- 49:11SPEAKER_04: Again, these are you know, everybody chooses their own.
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: Some people have personal bias towards their defensive linemen list, some people, you know, they just watch a certain guy and they think he should be in your top five.
- 49:24SPEAKER_04: This is what we have chosen for our personal top five defensive linemen, Tristan.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: What do you have for number five?
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: Number five, I have Colby Whitcock.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: Whitlock, sorry, Colby Whitlock.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: Number you said numero five, numero five, not number cinco.
- 49:45SPEAKER_03: Is this incorrect?
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: You were just language right now.
- 49:48SPEAKER_04: Numero cinco.
- 49:49SPEAKER_04: Why why say numero and then just say five?
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Because it also means five.
- 49:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's fair.
- 49:55SPEAKER_03: Five does mean five.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: Numero five is is Kobe Whitlock.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: Uh 2007, freshman All-American selection.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: The guy got 45 tackles in his 45 in his in his freshman season.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: Um, he was also second team All America in 2008.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: But why why he got here?
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: And he also was all conference first team his senior year.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: But why he got here was because of the most legendary game of all time in Texas Tech history.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: He's kicked off this the defensive lineman kicked off the scoring in that UT game.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: Are you sure the most famous Texas Tech game wasn't last year against Baylor?
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Oh, that one was pretty big, too.
- 50:33SPEAKER_04: But we were there.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: All I'm saying is that you know, hey man, all I'm saying is that 2020 Baylor game has a chance to be as good as that 2008 Texas game was.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: Legendary status, no doubt.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: But well, here we are talking about like guys that are near that legendary status.
- 50:50SPEAKER_03: Uh 2008, the guy got a safety in that in that opening, and then the opening of that game.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: So the guy kicked it off.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: What a stud.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, I had to get him in there because obviously he's got accolades, but just to be a part of such something so amazing in Texas Tech history and just be with the team for the four years, he's he deserves a little bit of a spot there.
- 51:09SPEAKER_04: He set the tone in that game in that 2008 game.
- 51:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, getting a safety.
- 51:13SPEAKER_04: I can't, I I that is one of the biggest things I wish I could do.
- 51:17SPEAKER_04: If I had three wishes, it would be to be at that 2008 game because seeing a safety, imagine you going to uh this hyped up the most hyped up Texas Tech football game in history and seeing a safety on like the first or second play.
- 51:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was uh unbelievable.
- 51:34SPEAKER_04: I go and watch that game uh once a year.
- 51:37SPEAKER_04: It's fantastic.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: Um, it's true as is tradition.
- 51:40SPEAKER_04: You want to see some good Texas Tech stuff, they got the full game on YouTube, go watch it.
- 51:44SPEAKER_04: Um, he also started 49 consecutive games, Kobe Whitlock, which was a or which is a Texas Tech school record.
- 51:52SPEAKER_04: Um, 168 tackles in his career, 30 and a half tackles for loss, eight sacks and two force fumbles in his Texas Tech career.
- 51:59SPEAKER_04: He's a little higher on my list, but uh that's good number five.
- 52:02SPEAKER_03: I appreciate that.
- 52:03SPEAKER_03: Who you got for number five?
- 52:04SPEAKER_04: I got Adele Ducett, uh, my boy, my boy over here, uh, there from Texas Tech from 2001 to 2004.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: He is second in career sacks at Texas Tech with 28 sacks.
- 52:17SPEAKER_04: He's got 14 in just the 2003 season alone, which is the second highest single season sack total for any player in Texas Tech history.
- 52:26SPEAKER_04: He is also a three-time all Big 12 selection for Texas Tech.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: So that is why Adele Duckett is my number five.
- 52:34SPEAKER_03: Great number five, great way to get this going.
- 52:37SPEAKER_03: So, with number four, I'm going with the statistical leader in Texas Tech football here with 34 sacks in his career, and the man holds two single sack single season sack records in the top 10.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: It is Aaron Hunt, he is Canadian football legends.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: I had to throw the guy on there for numbers alone.
- 52:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, the guy unfortunately didn't get any of the accolades to go with it, but the guy's got the numbers.
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: He does, he does.
- 53:06SPEAKER_04: He's higher on my list.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: Like, I mean, it seems like we're one off on each of these, but uh yeah, I had Colby Woodlock at my number four.
- 53:14SPEAKER_04: We already talked about him.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: Uh, I had Aaron Hunt at my number three because my man from 1999 to 2002, like you said, all-time leader in sacks in Texas Tech history.
- 53:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was an he was just elite every single season.
- 53:30SPEAKER_04: He brought consistency, uh, just over 46 tackles for loss in his career, first team all Big 12 and third team all American in 2001.
- 53:38SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was drafted sixth round by the Denver Broncos in the NFL, but after that, he had a successful uh career in the Canadian Football League.
- 53:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, so yeah, Aaron Hunt's a little higher on my list.
- 53:51SPEAKER_03: All right, I'll take I'll take a one differential there.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: So for number three, I'm gonna say this right.
- 53:58SPEAKER_03: I'm totally saying this right.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: It's it's ecumetive.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: That's it's it's economic burley, right?
- 54:04SPEAKER_03: Uh maybe we're losing listeners right now.
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: We're probably how dumb that is they're like, what the hell are these guys?
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 54:12SPEAKER_03: Well, the the man, the loved getting native, he is all Southwest conference selects selection in three years 73, 74, and 75.
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: That is unbelievable.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: And the man is in the Texas Tech Hall of Honor in 2004.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: It's not surprising to see some old guys here on this list, uh, because we're not exactly known for our defense here in the in this century, but the man held it down in the 70s in the Southwest Conference.
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: You gotta give it to him with that amount of medals.
- 54:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: That's a good choice.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, I put him in my honorable mentions, but uh, the old guys, it's tough to judge.
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, the accolades are there, so I respect that pick at your number three, but I do believe that our number two and our number one are going to be the same.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Let's talk about number two, Monte Ranger.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Is that is that your number two?
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: It is that matching.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: Okay, good.
- 55:09SPEAKER_04: He was there from 1995 to 1998 at Texas Tech.
- 55:13SPEAKER_04: He is third in sacks in Texas Tech history with 25 and a half sacks.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: Started 41 of 44 career games.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: Um, his senior year, 1998, he had 96 tackles, seven sacks, and 19 tackles for loss, was a first-team All-American and a first team All Big 12 player, drafted by the Broncos in the second round of the 1999 NFL draft, played nine years in the NFL, Super Bowl champ, man, with the Colts in 2007.
- 55:40SPEAKER_04: So um, that is why Monte Rager is my number two all time.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: Not to be confused with Bart Rager, not to be confused, not to be confused with special teams legend Bart Rager.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: But no, you you you took my notes verbatim, man.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: And the guy's got a ring.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: So, and the man had an amazing career at Texas Tech, really set the pace going into the into the the next decade here, uh, into the next century, I should say.
- 56:03SPEAKER_03: So, what a what a stud and what a great first go at it in the Big 12 to have.
- 56:09SPEAKER_04: We could always use another Monte Rager on this Texas Tech team.
- 56:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, just consistency, dude.
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: That was uh in the late 90s, he really brought it.
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: So he is both of our number twos, but obviously both of our number ones for all-time defensive linemen in Texas Tech history is Senior Sack himself, Gabe Rivera.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: Easy pick.
- 56:33SPEAKER_03: We're talking about a ring of honor, one of the the OGs of the Ring of Honor picked in pretty dang early, and the man just has an illustrious career behind him and an NFL career that was taken way too short.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and and God rest his soul.
- 56:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, but the man was inducted into the college football hall of fame in 2012, was also a consistent consensus all-American in his career, and the guy has the most badass defensive lineman nickname I've ever heard of out of San Antonio, Texas, and senior sack.
- 57:06SPEAKER_04: It's not just because he's from San Antonio that we're putting him this high on the list, but yeah, probably like the Houston and Dallas folk are getting a little salty right now.
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: It's true, it's true.
- 57:16SPEAKER_04: If you you don't really know the true story of how good Gabe Rivera was, my dad grew up and was raised in San Antonio.
- 57:22SPEAKER_04: He knew everybody in the city knew who Gabe Rivera was and that he chose Texas Tech and that he was going to be awesome.
- 57:30SPEAKER_04: Unfortunately, you know, when he was selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 1983 uh NFL draft, he was paralyzed during his rookie season in a car accident uh that took his NFL career away.
- 57:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, that was a real shame.
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: But while he was at Texas Tech, I mean, he was just unbelievable.
- 57:48SPEAKER_04: 321 tackles, 14 sacks, 11 pass deflections, six fumble recoveries in his Texas Tech career was the 1982 Southwest Southwest Conference defensive player of the year.
- 58:00SPEAKER_04: Uh, he was named in the Southwest Conference 1980s, all decade team as well.
- 58:04SPEAKER_04: So um, senor sack will always have his name up in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 58:10SPEAKER_04: He's the best defensive lineman of all time at Texas Tech.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: He's absolutely up there with a Zach Thomas of being the one of the greatest one, top three, top two greatest defensive players that ever stopped on the field for us.
- 58:21SPEAKER_03: Um, and and just absolutely the biggest what if ever for Texas Tech and the professionals.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: So God knows what kind of career that guy could have put together in the big leagues, and it probably would have been amazing.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and and unfortunately, his his life was also cut too short, just like his career.
- 58:37SPEAKER_03: So, God rest his soul.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for what he gave to Texas Tech.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: Senior Sack is always going to be one of the most badass thick names to ever be at Texas Tech, and and he's always got his name memorialized up there.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: Glad you got to see that.
- 58:50SPEAKER_04: He's a legend, man.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: He's a legend to Texas Tech, just like we've had plenty of legends that we've already talked about uh during our offseason series.
- 58:57SPEAKER_04: But let's talk about some honorable mentions because there are a ton of guys that uh need their names mentioned in the all-time best of defensive linemen at Texas Tech.
- 59:07SPEAKER_04: Uh Kerry Hyder, man, he's had such a long career at in the NFL, and he was fantastic while he was at Texas Tech.
- 59:14SPEAKER_04: Him, I had Brandon Williams, I had Don Reeves, I had Brandon Sharp, McKinner Dixon, our boys, Pete Robertson, I had Brandon Jackson as well, guys that we actually watched while at Texas Tech.
- 59:28SPEAKER_04: Uh, all those guys deserve to be named on this list of all timers.
- 59:33SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, we have our top fives, and these guys just just didn't make the cut.
- 59:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm sorry to disappoint our age range.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: I usually like throw in one of our generation guys in there, but yeah, uh, it's just unfortunately not a position that really was starlit during our time.
- 59:48SPEAKER_03: So uh, but great, just a great list of honorable honorable mentions as well.
- 59:52SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see some guys get added to it, hopefully, this season.
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: Um, and this unit has only gotten better lately.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: So I hope it just continues down that path.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, it's always fun talking about some old greats from Texas Tech.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_04: Talking about the big fives, talking about the big boys.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_04: We talked about the offensive big boys, we talked about the defensive big boys on this episode.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: It's been fun, man.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_04: Uh, we have one more offseason episode before football season.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_04: This is crazy.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: We're getting so close.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: Thanks, goodness.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: Thanks, thank you, goodness.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: Um, and and plus, we have some Texas Tech soccer starting up soon, too.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: So we'll finally have some sports to talk about, dang it.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_04: Finally, we have the special teams episode coming up next week.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: We're also gonna give our optimisms and pessimisms going into the season, and then the week after that, we're gonna give you a full-on Texas Tech football preview right before the Houston game to get you ready for the season uh here on Talking Tech.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_04: So uh, man, just so excited.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: So excited to get to Houston to watch that game.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: Me too, man.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: Make sure y'all sign up for the the Red Ramblin' Raiders tailgate.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: We'll be there.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_03: Please come say hi to us.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, we'll be the like we'll be the guys that look like they don't know what they're doing and anything in their life.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: That's totally us uh with a beer in hand.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_03: So please come say hi.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh we'll we'll please give us your takes on on everything we've talked about.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: And we want to hear your takes too.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: So just please, please come and see us, come support the Ramblin' Raiders and come support our Red Raiders.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_03: We need so much this season, so much is at stake.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: So we definitely need to uh pull ourselves together and and back up this team.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_04: Lots on the line.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: Uh, football season is going to be fun.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: Uh, but let's do it, man.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_04: Let's let's end her off.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, we have a song of the week that we finish off with every episode uh to get y'all, you know, grooving, get y'all vibing with something.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_04: And to that point, we are doing a groovy song of the week, maybe a little old school jam, maybe just something you like to groove to, something you like to listen to, something you know, it it can work no matter what.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: If you're dancing, if you're in the car, if whatever.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_04: Your groovy song of the week, Tristan.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_04: What is it?
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: Man, I'm taking the word literally the groovy.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: I'm going with the elements, I'm going with the earth, I'm going with the wind, and I'm going with the fire, baby.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_03: One of the most famous disco groups of all time.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_03: And I'm going with one of their songs that isn't is still popular, but it's not September.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: I'm going with Let's Groove.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: Very nice.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_03: You can't help but move back and forth to that one.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_03: You're gonna jig.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_03: The white boys out there are gonna bop with it, you know.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_03: It's just like you're gonna see my horrible white boy dance moves with this one.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_04: None of you can uh if if none of you know Tristan, uh this man, his dance moves are questionable, I would say.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_04: Um they're uh he does the white boy bop perfectly.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_04: I will give you my signature.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's the only thing you have.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_04: That's good.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: That's a good, that's a good jam.

- 1:04:17SPEAKER_03: So it's it's a hurry, it's a hereditary thing.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: That's true.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_04: The McGonagalls own the white boy bop.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_04: I'm sure I'm sure at the Ramblin' Raiders tailgate he'll be doing a little bit of that.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_03: Easily, because I'll I would have been a few sodas in at that point.
