Transcript
- 0:00Um, man, what
- 0:03a that's an unbelievable win for our
- 0:04ball club. Um, you know, we've been here
- 0:07for 11 years. That might be the best
- 0:08road win that we've ever had as a
- 0:11program. And I mean, if you look back at
- 0:13Auburn basketball history, that might be
- 0:15one of the best road wins we've ever had
- 0:16as a program. You know, to I I never
- 0:19mentioned to the guys that we hadn't won
- 0:20here in 30 years. Um, didn't think it
- 0:23was prevalent because all new players,
- 0:26new staffs. Um, so, you know, we just
- 0:29kind of kept our mentality on what what
- 0:32we needed to do to to beat Florida. And,
- 0:35um, you know, I thought our guys for
- 0:37about 32 minutes executed the game plan
- 0:40to perfection. And, um, you know, our
- 0:42team 3 weeks ago would not have won this
- 0:44game. And that just speaks to our growth
- 0:47as as a team. Um our growth as a staff
- 0:50and our kids just, you know, willingness
- 0:52to stick together and really lock into
- 0:54the details of the things that we've
- 0:55been harping on every single day in
- 0:57practice and we've just continuously
- 0:59gotten better as a group. And uh you
- 1:01know, for us it's it's about what we do
- 1:03from here because while we beat probably
- 1:05the best team in our league on the road,
- 1:07like we can't you know, while we never
- 1:08got too low, we we can't let this get us
- 1:10too high cuz you know, if we if we let
- 1:13this thing affect us in in a in a in a
- 1:16in a way that can distract us from the
- 1:18next one, then it really doesn't mean
- 1:20anything. So, um we got to get on to the
- 1:22next one and we got to get on to Texas
- 1:23because, you know, they they're
- 1:24obviously playing good basketball right
- 1:26now. But unbelievable environment.
- 1:28That's that was probably the best crowd
- 1:29I've ever seen in this building um since
- 1:31we've been at Auburn. And it should be
- 1:33because that's that's a Final Four
- 1:35caliber team and um you know I thought
- 1:37our guys just did a good job of
- 1:38executing the things that we had to do
- 1:40in order to win and uh were able to come
- 1:42away with a great win. So take any
- 1:45questions.
- 1:46>> We also have Kean Murphy up here for
- 1:48questions. So we'll start with
- 1:50Coach Pearl. Talk a little bit about the
- 1:52defense particularly in the first half
- 1:53that you guys had against. What were the
- 1:56things that you received from your
- 1:59we were just swarming at the ball and
- 2:01you know we we really talked about
- 2:02keeping everything in front of us. Um we
- 2:05had some discussions on whether or not
- 2:06we were going to switch and we just
- 2:08figured you know we got to do what what
- 2:09we do best and switching has been really
- 2:11good for us over the last you know
- 2:12couple weeks and uh we just didn't we
- 2:15didn't let the their size affect us. Um
- 2:17our our bigs did a great job at kicking
- 2:19the guards out anytime we did catch a
- 2:20switch and uh you know we wanted to make
- 2:22them settle for for contest or for jump
- 2:24shots and uh you know they made four of
- 2:26them in the first half but that was
- 2:27something that we were okay with. I
- 2:28thought the biggest difference in the
- 2:30first half was we only we held them to
- 2:31four offensive rebounds and that team
- 2:34you know in the first half they missed
- 2:3616 shots and to only get four offensive
- 2:38rebounds that's 25% that's 20% under
- 2:41what they typically rebound on the
- 2:43offensive end. That that's significant.
- 2:45That's substantial. It's the reason why
- 2:46we were up 15. It's the reason why we
- 2:48won the game. Um, you know, they got a
- 2:50couple of them late, you know, on those
- 2:52last couple possessions, but I thought
- 2:53overall our guys did a really good job
- 2:54of hitting and and, you know, holding
- 2:56their checkouts and swarming to the
- 2:58basketball and finishing possessions.
- 2:59So, uh, you know, and then anytime the
- 3:02ball went into the post, our our, you
- 3:03know, guards did a great job of digging
- 3:04at it. Our bigs were very physical and
- 3:06they did a great job of getting vertical
- 3:08at the rim and not letting them have any
- 3:09easy ones. So, you know, we held them to
- 3:1037% from the field. Um, you know, part
- 3:13of it they missed 11 free throws. Um,
- 3:16but you know, we'd rather them shoot
- 3:17free throws than than get easy ones at
- 3:19the rim. So, defensively, I thought our
- 3:21guys did a good job executing the things
- 3:23that we needed to do.
- 3:25>> That's what you said. You thought you
- 3:26were going to have to hit 40% or better.
- 3:30You only have one in the second half.
- 3:32What does that say about the way you
- 3:34guys were able to grind basket?
- 3:36>> But we shot 90% from the free throw
- 3:38line. So, that 10% I said I told the
- 3:40guys we need to shoot 80% from the line.
- 3:42the fact that we shot 90 I think makes
- 3:44up for the one three that we probably
- 3:45could have or could have or should have
- 3:46made. So, uh, but yeah, to only, you
- 3:49know, make one three in the second half,
- 3:51um, and shoot 33%, you know, that just
- 3:54kind of speaks to our guys ability to
- 3:56just kind of hang in there. You know,
- 3:57they tie the game with 750 left and
- 3:59that's an eternity in college
- 4:01basketball, especially on the road. They
- 4:02had all the momentum in the world and we
- 4:04got into a timeout and we were like,
- 4:05"You guys, like, if I were to tell you
- 4:07that with 7 minutes and 50 seconds left,
- 4:10we're going to be tied against one of
- 4:11the best teams in college basketball on
- 4:13the road. Would you take it?" And
- 4:14they're like, "Fuck yeah." Like, "Let's
- 4:16go." And um, you know, they they did a
- 4:18great job of responding and, you know,
- 4:21we did a we hit back and we went on
- 4:23like, you know, I think I told them I
- 4:24said we were going to be up five at the
- 4:25next media and we got up six. So, our
- 4:28guys just responded and um, did a great
- 4:30job of taking that team's punch. three
- 4:32weeks ago, our team would have folded
- 4:34and and let all that pressure get to us
- 4:36and uh you know, our team did a great
- 4:38job of hanging in there and staying
- 4:39together.
- 4:40>> Coach
- 4:4216's
- 4:48gone.
- 4:53>> Yeah, he's healthier now. You know, he
- 4:55he wasn't healthy. How many games we
- 4:57played, Ted?
- 4:59>> 20 21. So, like he wasn't healthy the
- 5:02first
- 5:0416 or 17 games of the year. He really
- 5:06just got healthy over the last like five
- 5:08or six and you've seen his production go
- 5:10up and we're able to run things for him
- 5:12and he's just he's been doing such a
- 5:13great job of anytime a miss is coming
- 5:15off he's crashing the offensive glass
- 5:17and he's just way more he's got way more
- 5:19pep in his step, way more bounce and um
- 5:22you know we've always known how talented
- 5:23and skilled he is and you see that with
- 5:25his you know touch around the rim. I
- 5:27thought that three ball in the second
- 5:28half was cash, too. Good man.
- 5:29>> But you're making your free throws, too.
- 5:31He's um 12 for 13 the last two games
- 5:33from the foul line. That's the
- 5:34difference between 16 and nine and, you
- 5:37know, 12 and nine, which is, you know,
- 5:39that that makes all the difference in
- 5:41the world. So, he's been great. Uh but
- 5:43he's got to, you know, continue to stay
- 5:45hungry because that's I think what's
- 5:46kind of fueled him is he's had a little
- 5:48bit of a chip on his shoulder to kind of
- 5:50show, you know, the rest of our league
- 5:52and the country what he's capable of.
- 5:53And, uh, he's just got to continue to do
- 5:54that. So,
- 5:56>> yeah. Like coach said, I'm I'm getting
- 5:58back healthier and a lot of a lot of
- 6:00that is me getting confident. Uh the
- 6:02coaches and players put more confidence
- 6:04in me to be able to play my game. Um and
- 6:07as season goes, I I could I pray I
- 6:10continue to stay healthy to be able to
- 6:11produce like I am today.
- 6:22What did you guys see from him in the
- 6:23first half that really helped you get
- 6:24off that fast start?
- 6:26>> Yeah, IB said to me in the locker room,
- 6:27you know, for what it's worth, Keshan
- 6:29Hall didn't miss a shot in warm-ups. I
- 6:31said, usually that's the kiss of death
- 6:32for like he's going to miss every shot
- 6:34now. And then he made his first two and
- 6:36I looked at IB and he was like, I told
- 6:37you. So from there, I was like, Mike,
- 6:39just continue to feed him the ball
- 6:40because when he like you've seen when he
- 6:42was at UCF and you've seen at Auburn,
- 6:44like when he makes a couple shots, like
- 6:45at that point, the basket just gets
- 6:47really big for him. And um he did a
- 6:49great job of attacking their switches.
- 6:51He got him on angles and I thought the
- 6:53difference between his first half and
- 6:54his second half was in the first half he
- 6:55did a really good job of playing off two
- 6:56feet and using shot fakes when he needed
- 6:58to. In the second half he got a little
- 6:59sped up and played off one foot and
- 7:01Tommy did a great job of defending him
- 7:02at the rim. Um but you know made three
- 7:05threes early and to have 22 points in
- 7:08the first half, two assists, one
- 7:09turnover, you know, is just phenomenal.
- 7:11It's the only reason why we were up 15
- 7:12at that point. um he kind of carried our
- 7:14offense and gave us the confidence we
- 7:15needed to, you know, obviously hang in
- 7:17there. And uh for him to score two
- 7:19points in the second half and our guys
- 7:20to find a way to, you know, grind out
- 7:22that win was was really important for
- 7:24for our group.
- 7:26>> There was a lot of talk about your
- 7:27relationship with Todd. What was that
- 7:29postgame handshake like a beat?
- 7:32>> Yeah, I mean Todd's had our number since
- 7:34since we've been here. You know, they've
- 7:36won three out of four. Um and you know
- 7:39um we we've had every time we've played
- 7:42has been for something significant. So
- 7:44you know SEC tournament championship
- 7:46final four they go on to win a national
- 7:48championship. And you know like this
- 7:50game for us was huge because it this
- 7:52week you know we made up a lot of ground
- 7:54as far as where we were in the SEC going
- 7:56into this week. And to do it against two
- 7:57on the road twice is you know it meant a
- 8:00lot for our program and you know they
- 8:02just came off five straight wins so they
- 8:03were playing really well. So, you know,
- 8:05I'll call him after the game at some
- 8:07point and check on him. Um, you know,
- 8:09cuz, you know, he's he's a fiery
- 8:11competitor and I he's the best coach in
- 8:13our league and I have a tremendous
- 8:15amount of respect for him and his staff
- 8:17and um no, I mean, you know, he once he
- 8:20once he you know, we we'll talk at some
- 8:23point, you know, um
- 8:26it's I've been on the other end of that
- 8:27three times now, so I get it. Um, but
- 8:31you know, for our guys to be able to
- 8:32come down here and get our first win in
- 8:3430 years against probably the best team
- 8:35that was probably the best Florida team
- 8:36that we've played against in Gainesville
- 8:38since we've been at Auburn and uh for us
- 8:40to be able to come in here and get a win
- 8:42is, you know, significant and proud of
- 8:43the guys
- 8:49for a while.
- 8:55What's that say about him, his
- 8:56character,
- 8:58how he's coming along?
- 9:00>> Yeah, Sebastian is just, you know, he's
- 9:03the ultimate like team guy. And, you
- 9:06know, you you look at his stat sheet,
- 9:08you know, five five points, two
- 9:10rebounds, two turnovers. Like, that's
- 9:12not a great statline for Sebastian, but
- 9:14like like you said, he just he's out
- 9:16there and he's making winning plays and
- 9:18he's checking out every single
- 9:19possession. And then when we needed it
- 9:21the most, like he he puts the most
- 9:24physical player in our league on his ass
- 9:25and scores a layup. So that no one else
- 9:28can do that. Sebastian did it. And um
- 9:30you know, he he's just he's matured
- 9:32beyond his years. Um he does so many
- 9:35good things for us. He he will do
- 9:37whatever we ask him to do in order to
- 9:38win. And you know, he's he's a prime
- 9:42example of why we continue to do this
- 9:44because there's young men like him out
- 9:45there still. And you know, I'm really
- 9:47proud of him. I'm proud of his
- 9:48development. and you know he's just he's
- 9:50made our team as a as a freshman just so
- 9:52much better.
- 9:58>> What's changed for y'all over these last
- 10:01few weeks to be able to go on this run?
- 10:04>> In my opinion, it's been the effort on
- 10:05defense. Um like like our coaches say,
- 10:08uh nothing we do works without effort.
- 10:10So lately, we've been putting more
- 10:13effort into everything we do, showing up
- 10:15at practice, uh whether it's come out,
- 10:17just the small details. We've been
- 10:19putting more effort into everything we
- 10:20do and it's it's starting to show on on
- 10:22the
