- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Well we come up this ball with here, folks. NHL Unscripted.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The Stanley Cup is over. The Florida Panthers are defending
- 0:26Speaker 1: Cup champs. Before we get to that, though, our producer
- 0:28Speaker 1: Tal has been very on this. He's got a new
- 0:30Speaker 1: thing that I already wants to promote. Tal, go ahead,
- 0:32Speaker 1: give it to us right of the gate before we forget.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It's a lead item. Okay, Panthers win, Buttal is a
- 0:36Speaker 1: new project.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 0:38Speaker 3: We'll make it quick.
- 0:39Speaker 4: Appreciate you giving me the time to promote. It's called
- 0:41Speaker 4: Live Wire, The Loud Life and Shocking Murder of Alan Berg.
- 0:46Speaker 4: It has nothing to do with hockey, but it is
- 0:48Speaker 4: something that we've released with iHeart.
- 0:50Speaker 3: It's very exciting.
- 0:51Speaker 4: It's about this the story of Alan Berg, who was
- 0:53Speaker 4: a contemporary of Howard Stern and Don Imus in the eighties,
- 0:58Speaker 4: kind of like one of the first shock jocks, really.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Got people going, got people.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Angry, yelling at callers on the rate, and then he
- 1:05Speaker 4: was murdered in front of his home in nineteen eighty four.
- 1:09Speaker 4: It was one of the biggest cases in the history
- 1:11Speaker 4: of the Denver PD and the investigation was just as
- 1:14Speaker 4: shocking as alan Berg's personality on the air. So Live
- 1:19Speaker 4: Wire available through iHeart and the iHeart podcast, iHeart podcast
- 1:24Speaker 4: app and wherever you get your podcast.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Sounds riveting, but way to bring down the room.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Tell I was about to say time for a parade
- 1:30Speaker 1: before we get to the cup. JD's travels, this must
- 1:33Speaker 1: be interesting. You're watching the game now, Florida had it
- 1:35Speaker 1: in hand. Never know Edmonton comeback. When does the flight
- 1:37Speaker 1: get book though? You going to Scottsdale, going to Jersey.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It depends on how the game goes. You still got
- 1:42Speaker 1: a postgame wild night for Demurs.
- 1:45Speaker 5: At two Nothing, I checked into my flight flying back
- 1:49Speaker 5: to Newark because as an analyst and an astute analyst
- 1:54Speaker 5: at that I was like, there is no possible way
- 1:57Speaker 5: Edmonton can come back yet again in the series. I
- 2:00Speaker 5: just thought they're emotionally drained, especially from the three Nothing comeback.
- 2:05Speaker 3: They didn't.
- 2:06Speaker 5: It was that game that they get Game four that
- 2:10Speaker 5: takes so much emotion, and we talked about on the network.
- 2:13Speaker 5: It's so hard to do that night in and night out.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Every time you're chasing, you're you're playing with urgency. You're
- 2:18Speaker 5: playing with desperation. You know, you're not playing uber defensive
- 2:23Speaker 5: because you're trying to get those goals back. You know,
- 2:25Speaker 5: you're not counter punching and kind of not sitting on
- 2:27Speaker 5: your heels, but you're Florida just had it a lot
- 2:30Speaker 5: easier because they always got out to a lead. And
- 2:32Speaker 5: it's much easier playing with the lead, I find than
- 2:35Speaker 5: playing from behind because night in and night out. You
- 2:37Speaker 5: can maybe do it for one night, but over and
- 2:39Speaker 5: over again, it just wears on you. And as soon
- 2:42Speaker 5: as they went up to nothing, you know, Edmonton once
- 2:44Speaker 5: again had a great start.
- 2:45Speaker 3: They kind of have these every game.
- 2:47Speaker 5: They'd have like two minutes where they they'd be buzzing
- 2:50Speaker 5: McDavid b buzzing and they'd have, you.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Know, scoring chance of a scoring chance.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Bob would stand on his head and then they'd make
- 2:57Speaker 5: like an egregious turnover, just like at Comb throwing an
- 3:00Speaker 5: absolute grenade to Evan Bouchard and then Bouchard, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 5: playing hot potato with it, and Sam rein Hard makes
- 3:07Speaker 5: just the probably I want to say goal of the
- 3:09Speaker 5: series in the playoffs, but Brad Marshad did that a
- 3:12Speaker 5: game before, you know, so It's like this team just
- 3:16Speaker 5: in Florida is just absolutely incredible and to nothing. I
- 3:19Speaker 5: went ununited and I showed everybody and I said, check
- 3:22Speaker 5: in now, two bags, thank you seed three f Yes,
- 3:26Speaker 5: I was in first class.
- 3:27Speaker 2: You can suck it, veteran move. It's interesting now looking
- 3:32Speaker 2: at the Cup final, JD.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Because after two games you're thinking instant classic, right, this
- 3:36Speaker 1: is when tallos a Godfather too, better than the original.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Game four was an epic in and of itself because
- 3:41Speaker 1: Edmondson arrived from that. I gotta be honest, it's a
- 3:44Speaker 1: little frustrating. The games five and six kind of a lockdown, right,
- 3:47Speaker 1: as you said, Edmonton, they seem to be hurt more
- 3:49Speaker 1: by the travel back home to game five. I think
- 3:52Speaker 1: game six, like you said, when's Florida up two to nothing.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I'm not disparaging the Oilers. I'm crediting the Panthers. They're
- 3:56Speaker 1: a wagon. But we thought we make an epic Cup
- 3:59Speaker 1: final instead. It was good hockey, but ultimately Florida is
- 4:01Speaker 1: just I mean, they're a machine man.
- 4:03Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 4:04Speaker 5: Well, the elephant in the room is Edmonton was a
- 4:06Speaker 5: better team last year.
- 4:07Speaker 3: That's just it.
- 4:09Speaker 5: I think we all tried to say they weren't and
- 4:11Speaker 5: they were a better team. They weren't this This the
- 4:13Speaker 5: team last year was much better, much faster. They had
- 4:17Speaker 5: a lot of young talent on the team. And you know,
- 4:19Speaker 5: the big the big thing that you know, was more
- 4:23Speaker 5: and more apparent as the series went on, was the
- 4:25Speaker 5: absence of Zach Hymen. I mean, Zach kymon over one
- 4:27Speaker 5: hundred hits. His physicality, the way he gets the net,
- 4:30Speaker 5: he provides a lot more depth for that lineup. And
- 4:33Speaker 5: there's a lot of guys that were kind of out
- 4:35Speaker 5: kicking their coverage show to speak, in terms of of
- 4:38Speaker 5: playing more minutes than they should have been. And that's
- 4:41Speaker 5: just because they got all their depth got pilfered by
- 4:44Speaker 5: the Saint Louis Blues who just offer sheeted the shit
- 4:47Speaker 5: out of them, and they couldn't match it, and they
- 4:49Speaker 5: didn't want to match and they ended up bringing in
- 4:51Speaker 5: Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidson for you know, rot was it,
- 4:54Speaker 5: Ryan McLeod, Dylan Holloway, Philip Roberg, all those guys they
- 4:57Speaker 5: could have maybe kept for the same amount of money
- 5:00Speaker 5: that they gave Arvidson and Skinner, and maybe in hindsight,
- 5:03Speaker 5: it's easy to say. Now, yes, they got to the
- 5:05Speaker 5: Stanley Cup finals. I am not disagreeing that this team
- 5:08Speaker 5: had an opportunity to win a cup. But do I
- 5:11Speaker 5: think this team was better than last year?
- 5:13Speaker 3: No? I don't think so. And Florida was better than
- 5:15Speaker 3: last year.
- 5:16Speaker 5: I think this that team is a different animal, and
- 5:19Speaker 5: I didn't think they'd be able to kind of you
- 5:22Speaker 5: know a lot of you know, they lose Brandon Montour,
- 5:25Speaker 5: they lose a couple of big pieces, and everybody's kind
- 5:28Speaker 5: of going, like, you know, Lomberg, some some physicality, and
- 5:31Speaker 5: they go, these guys are gonna be able to do
- 5:32Speaker 5: it again. And I mean they looked even better they got.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I mean, you know, Boston Bruins basically gave them a
- 5:37Speaker 5: Stanley Cup by giving Brad Marshall for a second round pick,
- 5:40Speaker 5: which is conditional and is now a first round pick,
- 5:44Speaker 5: but they can't use that in twenty twenty eight. So
- 5:45Speaker 5: I'm like, who the fuck are you eyeing in twenty
- 5:47Speaker 5: twenty eight that you're gonna draft what the thirty the
- 5:51Speaker 5: thirty second overall pick. Take that's a hell of a
- 5:55Speaker 5: pick to get thirty second.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Think about dude, in the NFL, they say, first round
- 5:58Speaker 1: picks are like fifty percent of success. Right to your point,
- 6:01Speaker 1: when you're a great team, give me a first round pick.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe that's twenty percent success rate, Like it
- 6:06Speaker 1: sounds good to go first round pick in twenty twenty seven.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You go, okay, whatever. Marsham was a steal.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I mean it was ridiculous how good he played, not
- 6:13Speaker 1: only the character on the ice, obviously off the ice.
- 6:15Speaker 1: They beat Edmonton at games three, five, and six a
- 6:17Speaker 1: combined score of sixteen to four in the first period
- 6:21Speaker 1: of games three and six.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I know you said's had a good start in Game six, but.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Of overall three, four, five, six, they had scored them
- 6:26Speaker 1: nin ninth to nothing. And the trio of Marshann, Bennett
- 6:30Speaker 1: and Reinhart this is Tal's favorite stat. They outscored the
- 6:33Speaker 1: entire Oilers team in the series JD eighteen to seventeen.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Three dudes, that's unreal.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean the depth, the scoring, the unlikely scores
- 6:45Speaker 5: of this team, not Sam Reinhart. Reinhart, I think it
- 6:48Speaker 5: came out he was playing with like a Grade two
- 6:50Speaker 5: mcl sprain, which is pretty painful. But he looked better
- 6:53Speaker 5: as the series went on and he's Sam Bennett, the
- 6:55Speaker 5: cons my twinner. I just back up the bringstruck baby,
- 6:58Speaker 5: because he is gonna get paid and as he should be,
- 7:01Speaker 5: because that you pay him for what he did in
- 7:03Speaker 5: the playoff. He is electric factory, he's physical, he's dirty.
- 7:09Speaker 5: He you know, chicken wings certain players and goaltenders and
- 7:13Speaker 5: takes people out of games. But thinking go and you know,
- 7:16Speaker 5: Toad drag you because he has all that skill in
- 7:19Speaker 5: brad Marsham, which is you know, the more I was.
- 7:22Speaker 5: I played with him when I was sixteen and in
- 7:25Speaker 5: monked and we came into the league, into the queue together,
- 7:27Speaker 5: and you know, everything I've heard about him since he's
- 7:31Speaker 5: went on, and people try to say he's a dick
- 7:33Speaker 5: and he's a villain and he's a little bit of
- 7:35Speaker 5: a prick, but like he is like a very very personable,
- 7:40Speaker 5: nice guy, very outgoing, very welcoming to everybody. He is
- 7:44Speaker 5: a little you know, he's very direct, and you know
- 7:47Speaker 5: he's a competitor. But you know, there's all these stories
- 7:50Speaker 5: that were coming out. You know, we were talking to
- 7:51Speaker 5: James Hagen's we used to you know, projected to go
- 7:54Speaker 5: number three overall this year. One of the draft picks
- 7:57Speaker 5: and Jcobrien. And the first thing they said is when
- 8:00Speaker 5: they went into the Florida Panthers locker room, the one
- 8:02Speaker 5: guy that grabbed them to have breakfast with him or lunch,
- 8:05Speaker 5: I can't remember. It was Brad Marshall sat down with them,
- 8:08Speaker 5: talked told them about what to look for in the league,
- 8:11Speaker 5: said congratulations, like I hope you know, gave them tips
- 8:15Speaker 5: and tricks, and I'm like, that's something that's very cool.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Being a steward of the game.
- 8:18Speaker 5: You know, being forthcoming with your time is is something
- 8:22Speaker 5: that not a lot of superstars do and you sometimes
- 8:26Speaker 5: take that for granted, of like passing of the torch,
- 8:28Speaker 5: and Brad seems to have done. And I mean, look
- 8:30Speaker 5: what he's done with that line of Lundell and lost
- 8:32Speaker 5: to Ryan. I mean they were they were so good.
- 8:35Speaker 5: That was the best line in the finals and maybe
- 8:37Speaker 5: the best line for the Panthers overall throughout that Stanley
- 8:41Speaker 5: Cup run. I mean, you couldn't you match up against
- 8:43Speaker 5: Barkoff and Kachuck and then you have to play against
- 8:45Speaker 5: Marshall and lost to Ryanan and Lundell. It's like that's
- 8:48Speaker 5: that's a first line on over ten teams at least
- 8:52Speaker 5: in the in the NHL. So it's I don't know
- 8:55Speaker 5: how you could beat him. I mean this team could
- 8:57Speaker 5: go again and win next year easily. Feels like.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned Ryan and that third line.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I was just listening to your buddy, Doug Waiter, of
- 9:03Speaker 1: course to right work with the San Jose Sharks, listening
- 9:05Speaker 1: to an HL network radio and he said, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Florida to him was a better team because picarly that
- 9:10Speaker 1: third line, because those guys were good contributors a year
- 9:12Speaker 1: ago lost Ryan Londell, but they went to a different
- 9:14Speaker 1: level this year.
- 9:15Speaker 2: To your point, you can mention.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Depth, but like Florida's guys, they're just rolling out three
- 9:19Speaker 1: lines and they're getting it done.
- 9:20Speaker 2: In terms of the great babes of all time, I
- 9:23Speaker 2: mean el mcfirst is probably number one.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Number two is Babe Ruth. Number three is Babe the
- 9:26Speaker 1: movie Babe Pick in the City. Fourth would be Babe Die.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And I mentioned because Sam Reidhart becomes the first player
- 9:33Speaker 1: since Babe Die in nineteen twenty two to score four
- 9:37Speaker 1: goals in a Cup clinching win. I remember when you
- 9:39Speaker 1: said to me at one point, the Oilers have held
- 9:40Speaker 1: this series like maybe thirty three minutes. The final total
- 9:43Speaker 1: is this Panthers spent two or fifty five minutes and
- 9:46Speaker 1: forty nine seconds in the lead. That's a new NHL record,
- 9:49Speaker 1: and that's at a four hundred and twenty eight minutes
- 9:51Speaker 1: of total ice time, So they led sixty one percent
- 9:53Speaker 1: of the time. And to your point, if someone says
- 9:55Speaker 1: that they have dynasty, I'm like, okay, two to three,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I wouldn't quite saydynasty. I think you need to get
- 9:59Speaker 1: to three. But are they the favorite win the Cup
- 10:01Speaker 1: next year? Yeah, caunse I see them winning a three peat. Absolutely,
- 10:04Speaker 1: Why couldn't.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Yeah, It's different than you know, the Tampa Bay Lightning team,
- 10:08Speaker 5: which I feel like they kind of got into some
- 10:11Speaker 5: cap trouble and you could see them trying to piece
- 10:13Speaker 5: this together in the third year and we all thought
- 10:16Speaker 5: they would get it. And I just think this Florida team,
- 10:20Speaker 5: like I don't even know. Yes, they have some injuries
- 10:23Speaker 5: to some key players, but I mean Bill Zito was
- 10:27Speaker 5: he just came out today and said they gave him
- 10:29Speaker 5: carte blanche spending the cap again, and I'm like, he's
- 10:32Speaker 5: gonna go get He's gonna go get some big players,
- 10:35Speaker 5: and he like fires from the hip, and you know
- 10:38Speaker 5: they're gonna let eck Blad walk. I can't see them
- 10:40Speaker 5: resigning k Blad, So he's.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Gonna walks Gnice for Bennett.
- 10:44Speaker 5: I think eight. I think he takes eight by eight.
- 10:46Speaker 5: Why wouldn't he? And I think he would even take
- 10:48Speaker 5: something a little bit less. And I think he loves
- 10:50Speaker 5: it there. He wants to stay there. I think it's
- 10:53Speaker 5: very the grass isn't always greener, and and you know,
- 10:57Speaker 5: an extra million here and there, yes, is beneficial. And
- 11:00Speaker 5: I know Matthew Kachuck was on you know TSN at
- 11:03Speaker 5: the end of when they had the cop talking about
- 11:06Speaker 5: those guys and saying like I tell them, go get
- 11:08Speaker 5: your money. But I listen eight by eight in South Florida.
- 11:12Speaker 5: The rink is right there in Victoria Park. It's ten
- 11:14Speaker 5: minutes from your house. In a golf cart. You know
- 11:17Speaker 5: you've to go. You go to Ameron Banker and to
- 11:19Speaker 5: the fan base is great, very rabid fan base. Now
- 11:22Speaker 5: your love beloved in the city, Like, why wouldn't you stay?
- 11:26Speaker 5: I think Marshan's the one wild card. I don't know
- 11:28Speaker 5: if he comes back. I think he might. You know
- 11:30Speaker 5: it's gonna be I think with his kids and family decision,
- 11:33Speaker 5: he might who knows where he might go.
- 11:35Speaker 1: You could see seven years of age, three years seventy. Yeah,
- 11:38Speaker 1: can that get that done?
- 11:40Speaker 3: I just don't know.
- 11:41Speaker 5: I don't know if they'll spend it on him either,
- 11:43Speaker 5: because you know, it's interesting. That's an interesting one for me.
- 11:47Speaker 5: I think they'd love to have him back, but I
- 11:48Speaker 5: don't know if the number will be right. And I
- 11:50Speaker 5: feel like Marshan's gonna do something weird, like he's gonna
- 11:53Speaker 5: go to either play with one of those Cole Harbor
- 11:55Speaker 5: buddies of his either said the kid, or he's gonna
- 11:59Speaker 5: go play Nate McKinnon. So I feel like I wouldn't
- 12:02Speaker 5: be surprised to see something like that or even like
- 12:05Speaker 5: go to a Toronto and try to win there. So
- 12:09Speaker 5: it's it's gonna be what is going on inside his
- 12:12Speaker 5: mind and what kind of legacy he wants to book,
- 12:14Speaker 5: because it's really whatever he wants to do. Because he
- 12:16Speaker 5: cemented himself as a Hall of Famer, I think, uh,
- 12:19Speaker 5: and it would he's one of those first ballot guys,
- 12:23Speaker 5: so I I yeah, it's gonna be very interesting to
- 12:27Speaker 5: see what he does. But I think they'll be able
- 12:28Speaker 5: to find some d Man. You know, ec bottle go
- 12:31Speaker 5: and they'll figure out a way to bring somebody in.
- 12:33Speaker 5: But yeah, this Florida teams set up again just to
- 12:36Speaker 5: their cores signed for a while. I mean they're set
- 12:38Speaker 5: up again to go on a fricking run and look
- 12:41Speaker 5: out Atlantic Division.
- 12:42Speaker 1: The previous cap at six point one two five millions.
- 12:45Speaker 1: We'll see sign me up at those options. He said,
- 12:46Speaker 1: I want to see Marshton in Colorado, and I think
- 12:48Speaker 1: it'd be fascinting. Imagine him with McKinnon and what would
- 12:50Speaker 1: happen there with the Avs. Bennett by the way, fifteen
- 12:53Speaker 1: playoff goals, he wins the cons my ufa July.
- 12:55Speaker 2: First, let's get to McDavid.
- 12:57Speaker 1: There's the casual hockey fans JD who go, all right,
- 13:00Speaker 1: so this guy's the best player on the sport, like YEP,
- 13:01Speaker 1: might get two thousand points one day, okay, a ton
- 13:04Speaker 1: of points. But unfortunately, as the series went on, clearly
- 13:07Speaker 1: he looked warned at he and Lean and DRIs altogether.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Now my buddy's a Levatard show. I like to call
- 13:12Speaker 2: him micoverrated. We're not gonna go to that level. But
- 13:18Speaker 2: exactly then, just to hop it on the Sunrise.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Now, nice guy knows about hockey.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Correct, mcover rates steven A. It's like watching steven A
- 13:24Speaker 5: talk to Sue Ban correct.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, p K, we got twin.
- 13:28Speaker 1: He's got twelve shots and shut though he's the best
- 13:31Speaker 1: player in the world.
- 13:32Speaker 2: What's he doing out there? He's gonna score a hat trick.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I'm like going go talk about not the NBNA can't
- 13:37Speaker 2: just score forty.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Having said that, Big David visibly upset during that Game
- 13:40Speaker 1: six postgame media session, and I'm with you, the Florida
- 13:43Speaker 1: was the better team, McDavid.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Next year's the last year of his contract.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You've got Evan Bouchard's in RFA, Corey Perry captain, and
- 13:51Speaker 1: Connor Brown, Trent Freederick John Klingberg.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Also to become UFAs.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Specifically for McDavid, how would you evaluate this playoff run,
- 13:58Speaker 1: this like a final?
- 13:59Speaker 2: What he does moving forward?
- 14:02Speaker 5: Well, I I don't know. I just think, you know,
- 14:06Speaker 5: I don't think they had a good team. Like I
- 14:08Speaker 5: don't think they had a team as good as people
- 14:10Speaker 5: were thinking. I thought Vegas, you know, was run down.
- 14:13Speaker 5: I think Vegas was a little over range. I thought
- 14:15Speaker 5: the whole Pacific Division, which was supposed to be, you know,
- 14:18Speaker 5: this juggernaut, but they were all kind of separated by
- 14:21Speaker 5: a couple points leading into the playoffs. Like LA was
- 14:23Speaker 5: the only team I thought had an opportunity of the Pacific.
- 14:28Speaker 5: I said, the Central was way better. And by the
- 14:30Speaker 5: time Dallas got to Edmonton, I mean, they had to
- 14:33Speaker 5: go through a gauntlet of teams, and I just think that,
- 14:38Speaker 5: you know, Dallas has a lot of questions in terms
- 14:41Speaker 5: of you know, you get those. I don't know if
- 14:44Speaker 5: they just didn't have enough hard skill guys, because Edmonton
- 14:49Speaker 5: kind of pushed him out of it, but you can't
- 14:51Speaker 5: out physical Florida, and I just think, I don't know,
- 14:55Speaker 5: I just think Edmonton didn't have this great team.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I thought the third line was slow.
- 14:59Speaker 5: I thought the fourth line was nonexistent for them, whereas
- 15:04Speaker 5: you know, Florida, the fourth line really provided a lot
- 15:06Speaker 5: of spark for them and was like kind of a
- 15:09Speaker 5: you know, they were just this lightning rod for this team. So,
- 15:13Speaker 5: you know, I think, what's crazy is we finished and
- 15:17Speaker 5: I'm like they're like, well, what happens next with these
- 15:19Speaker 5: two teams? And I'm like Florida just seems like they
- 15:23Speaker 5: don't have to answer a lot of questions. There's not
- 15:25Speaker 5: many like contracts that are coming up. It's pretty ho hum.
- 15:29Speaker 5: They're going to be set for next year. But Edmonton,
- 15:31Speaker 5: I'm like, they got a million questions. What do you
- 15:33Speaker 5: do in nets? What do you do on the back end?
- 15:36Speaker 5: What do you do for depth? You lost all your
- 15:38Speaker 5: young depth? You have not much in the in Bakersfield.
- 15:40Speaker 5: I don't think that can come up. I think they
- 15:43Speaker 5: depleted a lot of their stuff. You know, you have
- 15:46Speaker 5: Connor and Leon. You signed Leon. I assume Connor's going
- 15:49Speaker 5: to sign. I think Connor signs a one to two
- 15:51Speaker 5: year deal extension at like fifteen to eighteen million, and goes,
- 15:55Speaker 5: show me what you guys can do before committing. I
- 15:59Speaker 5: would if I'm Connor, I'm not committing to eight to
- 16:01Speaker 5: ten years, like eight years and there's no chance, because
- 16:05Speaker 5: what the hell you gotta do. There's talks today that
- 16:07Speaker 5: Evander Kaine is probably on the chopping block. They need
- 16:11Speaker 5: a number one goalie. I assume an offer sheet to
- 16:14Speaker 5: Joel Holfer's in the cards, because you know, Saint Louis
- 16:18Speaker 5: fucked them, So I'd go right back and offer shoot
- 16:20Speaker 5: Joel Hofer and try to take him and that would
- 16:22Speaker 5: make for a good one two punch with him and
- 16:24Speaker 5: Stuart Skinner. And you know then you look up front
- 16:28Speaker 5: and you know then now they all signs are pointing
- 16:30Speaker 5: that Trent Frederick is signing an eight year deal for
- 16:33Speaker 5: thirty million, And I'm like, what in God's name is
- 16:37Speaker 5: that deal? You're eight years for Trent Frederick? Guy was
- 16:42Speaker 5: hurt all year and in the playoffs was okay. He
- 16:46Speaker 5: had a couple of hits and a couple good games,
- 16:49Speaker 5: and you know, you're really banking that this guy is
- 16:52Speaker 5: gonna be healthy and come out of the gate flying,
- 16:54Speaker 5: and he might. He might just do that, and I
- 16:57Speaker 5: look like an idiot once again.
- 16:58Speaker 2: But but four million dollars for a year a guy
- 17:00Speaker 2: was a non factor.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Yeah, eight years, give me a years for I'll come
- 17:05Speaker 5: out of it, tire, I'll come out now and sign
- 17:07Speaker 5: eight years for seven hundred thousand, and you'll get the
- 17:10Speaker 5: best goddamn Jason E.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Murz ever if you want to give me that kind
- 17:12Speaker 3: of term.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Yeah, but like come on, like why, like why there's
- 17:16Speaker 5: no reason to give him eight years? Like, I know
- 17:19Speaker 5: you traded and it was a bit, It was a
- 17:21Speaker 5: lot of whatever they traded him for it was kind
- 17:23Speaker 5: of a big ask, like you don't have to prove
- 17:26Speaker 5: anything and sign him eight years. Tell him take four
- 17:28Speaker 5: years at four million and sit down and shut up,
- 17:31Speaker 5: like come on, like you're telling me that it's just crazy.
- 17:35Speaker 5: So you know that that's what they did. You know,
- 17:38Speaker 5: Victor Arvidson I think wants out of there. Jeff Skinner's gone,
- 17:42Speaker 5: Klingberg's gone. What do you do with Walman? You have
- 17:46Speaker 5: to pay Bouchard. I think Bouchard was the only teamon
- 17:48Speaker 5: that was pissing a drop. And in terms of in
- 17:51Speaker 5: that finals with moving the pucket, I know they're statistically
- 17:55Speaker 5: some guys looked really good, but I thought.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Those o their mobile defensemen.
- 17:58Speaker 5: Yeah, they struggled, they couldn't move that they couldn't break
- 18:00Speaker 5: out the bucket. Maybe that maybe we're making too many
- 18:03Speaker 5: excuses for Edmonton, saying they're not good enough and not
- 18:08Speaker 5: just appreciating how fantastic the Florida Panthers are and how
- 18:13Speaker 5: perfectly put together of a team they were and how
- 18:16Speaker 5: much of a masterclass that playoff run was. I'm like
- 18:20Speaker 5: trying to think of a team in my time playing
- 18:23Speaker 5: that was as good as this team and as dominant
- 18:26Speaker 5: on the Ford check just in the playoffs, so you
- 18:28Speaker 5: know they're banged up kind of going through the playoffs,
- 18:30Speaker 5: but that finals was lopside. I don't care what anybody says.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Three games in overtime, they could Florida could have swept them.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Florida could have swept them, and I would not have
- 18:40Speaker 5: been surprised. So, you know, going back to Connor, and
- 18:44Speaker 5: I am assuming Connor's gonna stay. I can't imagine he wouldn't.
- 18:49Speaker 5: I can't imagine Leon would have signed thinking Connor wasn't
- 18:53Speaker 5: gonna stay. But you know they're very close. I think
- 18:56Speaker 5: their wives are very close. But again, you know, all's
- 19:00Speaker 5: fair and love and money getting paid and going to
- 19:03Speaker 5: other teams whatever that means. But I think he does
- 19:07Speaker 5: take a one to two year deal though, And and
- 19:09Speaker 5: if I'm Edmonton, I go, here's two years at like
- 19:11Speaker 5: an eighteen million or whatever you want, whatever the most
- 19:15Speaker 5: expensive contract, and we'll show you that we're going to
- 19:18Speaker 5: build a team around you. But they have a lot
- 19:20Speaker 5: of questions to answer, and I'm I'm worried for him,
- 19:24Speaker 5: So we'll see how they do and see where they
- 19:26Speaker 5: can go. But you know, ed Nan and tal that
- 19:29Speaker 5: like with Connor and Leon. They'll drag you to the
- 19:32Speaker 5: playoffs every year like you're gonna get there, I think,
- 19:36Speaker 5: or get close to it. So but is it enough
- 19:39Speaker 5: to is it enough to have those guys to win
- 19:42Speaker 5: a cup? It's shown two years in a row that.
- 19:44Speaker 1: No interesting calling the Hofer because everyone's saying they definitely
- 19:47Speaker 1: need an upgrading.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Oh oh my god, that's Gibson. I fucking spend everything
- 19:52Speaker 5: to get a goalie there. They've never the best goalie
- 19:54Speaker 5: they've had in the McDavid era. Is is what Mike Smith? Yeah,
- 19:58Speaker 5: he was the best goaloy they've had in the McDavid era.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And Mike Yeah, he was like in his late thirties,
- 20:03Speaker 2: all right, Mike Smith.
- 20:05Speaker 5: Sergi Bobrovski, Like that's the gold standard. That's what you
- 20:08Speaker 5: gotta find for McDavid. Is that guy, Like because whatever
- 20:12Speaker 5: you want to say, how good Florida was, Like, Sergei
- 20:15Speaker 5: Bobrovski was out of this world, Like he was so good,
- 20:20Speaker 5: so solid. I think he if he gets a shutout
- 20:23Speaker 5: in that game, he gets the con smythe so over
- 20:25Speaker 5: Sam Bennett. But you know, congratulations to samue Laura Bennett.
- 20:29Speaker 1: We'll get to Blake Wheeler in a second. One more
- 20:31Speaker 1: thought here, which is always the injuries. This is always
- 20:33Speaker 1: the most amusing part for some people. As the Cup
- 20:35Speaker 1: found ens, you go, Okay, this guy is playing with
- 20:37Speaker 1: the torn labram, he has like, you know, one testicle.
- 20:40Speaker 1: This guy had a broken arm. Like they's just dragging
- 20:42Speaker 1: themselves there. How about Matthew Kachuk He scores the cup
- 20:45Speaker 1: winning goal playing with a sports hernia and a torn
- 20:49Speaker 1: abductor muscle. Unblieveableformance by him. But I'm curious, is a
- 20:53Speaker 1: guy who lived it and played it? What is your
- 20:55Speaker 1: rehaction when the series ends and they go, Okay, here's
- 20:57Speaker 1: the truth. Lower body injury meant this. He had a tornkneecap.
- 21:01Speaker 1: He literally had a torn hamshreem was playing off the boat.
- 21:03Speaker 1: What's your rehaction when all this stuff comes out?
- 21:05Speaker 3: I actually love it.
- 21:06Speaker 5: It's like my favorite day of the year because I'm like,
- 21:08Speaker 5: I wouldn't because you know, the guys that you know
- 21:12Speaker 5: the funniest part of all that we're talking about. It's
- 21:15Speaker 5: like the guys that have all the torn shit and
- 21:18Speaker 5: you know, played great, and then you see a guy
- 21:19Speaker 5: that like kind of was okay, and it's like he
- 21:22Speaker 5: had a bone contusion and you're like you're like, oh
- 21:24Speaker 5: you diarrhea, you have like oh he had like he
- 21:29Speaker 5: had the fluid's right. And then the best part about
- 21:31Speaker 5: this is every time the NHL, like all the fans
- 21:34Speaker 5: on Twitter, they compare all that to like.
- 21:36Speaker 3: The NBA injuries.
- 21:37Speaker 5: That's always like, I guess Tyrese Halibert and have like
- 21:41Speaker 5: a calf.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Strain or something not play well in game five.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Yeah, so they're like, we're surveying a calf strain and
- 21:47Speaker 5: they show Alexander Barkov's hands like split open with like
- 21:50Speaker 5: thirty stitches and he played with it. And it's like
- 21:53Speaker 5: it's like, yeah, is are we still going to debate
- 21:55Speaker 5: that the NBA versus NHL.
- 21:56Speaker 3: I guess we will, but it's fine. But yeah, it's
- 21:59Speaker 3: my favorite day.
- 21:59Speaker 1: We got some more hockey coming up, plus a little
- 22:01Speaker 1: talking about good will hunting. Let's coming up in a second,
- 22:04Speaker 1: But first, Blake Wheeler had an unbelievable career right now,
- 22:07Speaker 1: just set out this last year. Not sure if he
- 22:09Speaker 1: will come back to NHL, but he's got great stories
- 22:11Speaker 1: about playing with Winnipeg Jets, playing in Atlantic and eleven stories.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But with fans reacting to a shootout. What that all means?
- 22:17Speaker 1: Wheeler stories on Phil Kessel and Zadano, Chara and Brad Marshall.
- 22:21Speaker 1: All that more coming up. Blake Wheeler is next after
- 22:24Speaker 1: this on NHL in scripted.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Our Next Guest.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Drafted fifth Ough braw By The Phoenix Coylties wanted to
- 22:40Speaker 1: score nine hundred and forty three points in one and
- 22:43Speaker 1: seventy two games the Boston Bruins, Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets,
- 22:47Speaker 1: and New York Rangers. It's a pride of I'm gonna
- 22:50Speaker 1: mess up the pronunciation Wayzata Blake, James Wheeler.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Blake, great to see you, man. Did I get that right?
- 22:55Speaker 6: Why is that a you were close?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Why is that close to enough?
- 22:59Speaker 1: You know after not playing this past season, I know
- 23:02Speaker 1: it must have been challenged. You just kind of watch
- 23:04Speaker 1: last night. But our initial thoughts of that Stanley Cup Final,
- 23:08Speaker 1: it was such an epic after two games, the Oilers
- 23:10Speaker 1: showed such great result, ticularly over time, but it felt
- 23:13Speaker 1: like for me, just as as a fan on a
- 23:15Speaker 1: lifelong observer of the sport, the travel they didn't help Evington.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Going back to Game five, they seemed at a gas
- 23:20Speaker 1: and Game six, Florida just really took it to him
- 23:22Speaker 1: and it was clearly the more formidable team.
- 23:24Speaker 2: How did you see it?
- 23:25Speaker 7: Yeah, I think after four games it was a great series.
- 23:27Speaker 7: It was you know, the talk was, you know, of
- 23:29Speaker 7: all these overtime games and it was like the theater
- 23:32Speaker 7: was was was.
- 23:34Speaker 6: Really high caliber stuff.
- 23:35Speaker 7: And then you know, Florida in game five, in Game six,
- 23:39Speaker 7: they just showed why you know they're the they're the champs.
- 23:42Speaker 7: And that Game five in particular, I think was the
- 23:45Speaker 7: biggest surprise. I wasn't surprised at all by last night.
- 23:47Speaker 7: I thought that that was probably what was going to
- 23:50Speaker 7: go down last night. But Game five, going back to Edmonton,
- 23:54Speaker 7: after that win in Game four in Florida, you know,
- 23:57Speaker 7: I thought I thought we were going to see a
- 23:58Speaker 7: different Edmonton Oilers team. I thought they were going to
- 24:00Speaker 7: come out and yeah, be flying. I thought I thought
- 24:03Speaker 7: that was gonna be like a first period like you
- 24:05Speaker 7: sometimes see that team put together on their home ice.
- 24:07Speaker 6: So that was the difference in the series.
- 24:09Speaker 7: You know, when it was two neults in Florida after
- 24:11Speaker 7: the first period in Game five, like that, I think
- 24:13Speaker 7: sent shockwaves through that series.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's well said you're in Boston for the rival of
- 24:18Speaker 1: a young punk named Brad Marshan. He obviously stepped up
- 24:21Speaker 1: with a great Stanley Cup file Nashville Trade by Bill Zo.
- 24:23Speaker 2: What was he like as a rookie.
- 24:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I think he's just hungry. He was hungry to learn,
- 24:30Speaker 7: he was hungry to play. I mean, I think he
- 24:33Speaker 7: was just a guy that was willing to do whatever
- 24:34Speaker 7: it took to earn his way into the lineup to stick.
- 24:38Speaker 7: You know, he came in, I think he was playing
- 24:40Speaker 7: a lot, you know, lower in the lineup, and he
- 24:42Speaker 7: just kind of kept chipping away and kept earning more
- 24:45Speaker 7: and more and more to the point where Game seven
- 24:48Speaker 7: to the Stanley Cup Finals, you know, he's that line
- 24:50Speaker 7: with Patrice berger On and Mark Reki. They were the
- 24:52Speaker 7: difference in that Game seven. So this is not new
- 24:56Speaker 7: territory for him. He's been doing it. You know, even
- 24:58Speaker 7: said back back to you know, his early days in
- 25:00Speaker 7: the league. And no surprise that he's a huge factor
- 25:03Speaker 7: in the Stanley Cup finals.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Yeah, no question.
- 25:05Speaker 1: It was great for the Panthers as they've now made
- 25:06Speaker 1: three straight Stanley Cup Finals.
- 25:08Speaker 2: They win back to back Cups.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Obviously, Blake have been around the game for so long,
- 25:11Speaker 1: been around so many wonderful personalities. I'm curious about what
- 25:14Speaker 1: was your first impression of Zadano Chara when he arrived
- 25:16Speaker 1: in Boston.
- 25:17Speaker 2: You see this just Monstra on ice? What was that Like?
- 25:21Speaker 6: He's intimidating.
- 25:22Speaker 7: I mean, he's big, big guy, and he's just yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 7: the size, the presence. I mean, you ever see him
- 25:28Speaker 7: with his shirt off? He you know, he's pretty pretty
- 25:31Speaker 7: well put together. And uh, you know, outside of that though,
- 25:35Speaker 7: like his leadership, I mean how he approached the game
- 25:38Speaker 7: every day like he was a guy that was willing
- 25:40Speaker 7: to do whatever it took to like soak every single
- 25:44Speaker 7: ounce out of his ability to help that team win.
- 25:48Speaker 7: And you know, from a leadership standpoint, that's something I
- 25:51Speaker 7: really gravitated towards. Something I really learned from and took
- 25:54Speaker 7: with me, was if you want to be an elite player,
- 25:57Speaker 7: that's what it looks like. And and he he like
- 26:00Speaker 7: personified that every single day.
- 26:02Speaker 1: So it's funny he mentioned char with the shirt of
- 26:04Speaker 1: how is the jokes have been a plenty of Phil
- 26:06Speaker 1: Kessel the shirt off, and yet the guy was an
- 26:08Speaker 1: iron man, one of the all time great goal scorers.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Ever, what was Phil like in college.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Oh man, we were so young. I mean we were
- 26:16Speaker 6: eighteen years old.
- 26:18Speaker 7: He's Phil is just like such a lighthearted, great personality.
- 26:26Speaker 7: He was such a fun guy to be on a
- 26:28Speaker 7: team with. You know, I was lucky enough to play
- 26:30Speaker 7: on a number of teams with Phil. And yeah, I
- 26:33Speaker 7: mean the talent speaks for itself. Yeah, his goal scoring ability,
- 26:38Speaker 7: but his hockey IQ, I think is what stands out.
- 26:40Speaker 7: I mean, just he just he's one of those guys
- 26:42Speaker 7: that maybe he doesn't get enough credit for how he
- 26:45Speaker 7: makes the guy he he has made the guys.
- 26:47Speaker 6: Around him better.
- 26:49Speaker 7: And he was just one of those guys that when
- 26:51Speaker 7: you know, you could put him on the first line,
- 26:52Speaker 7: you could put him on the third line, and he
- 26:54Speaker 7: was gonna, he was gonna he was gonna boost everyone's.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Level around him.
- 26:59Speaker 7: So, uh, what a phenomenal career he had. You know,
- 27:03Speaker 7: I think when eighteen years old, if you would have said, hey, Phil,
- 27:06Speaker 7: you're gonna, you know, have the NHL iron Man Record
- 27:11Speaker 7: one day, I think we all probably would have laughed
- 27:12Speaker 7: at that. But you know, he just like I said,
- 27:17Speaker 7: those great players, they just find a way, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 7: to be great, and he figured out a way to
- 27:23Speaker 7: stay healthy and stay effective and play at a high
- 27:26Speaker 7: level for a really long time.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I just say the best ability is available.
- 27:29Speaker 1: It's surely Phil Kess always brought that along with all
- 27:31Speaker 1: those snipes. You played three years at the Gophers University
- 27:33Speaker 1: of Minnesota. What was it like for a kid growing
- 27:35Speaker 1: up in the state of hockey then played for the Gophers.
- 27:38Speaker 7: That was the dream. We didn't have an NHL team
- 27:41Speaker 7: for most of my childhood. I mean the Wild came
- 27:43Speaker 7: back when I was in high school, so I never really.
- 27:45Speaker 6: I mean the their first.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Run to the Western Conference Finals, I think that was
- 27:49Speaker 7: maybe the only time I ever really cheered for the Wild.
- 27:52Speaker 7: And then playing for the Winnipeg Jets, you're not really
- 27:54Speaker 7: a Wild fan. So yeah, like not having an NHL team,
- 27:59Speaker 7: every Minnesota kid's dream was to play for the Gophers.
- 28:03Speaker 7: I mean those were our between the guys playing in
- 28:06Speaker 7: the state high school hockey tournament and the guys playing
- 28:08Speaker 7: at miri Uchi every single night.
- 28:10Speaker 6: Uh, that's all. That's what we watched. That was our TV.
- 28:12Speaker 7: That was our hockey night in Canada, that was our
- 28:15Speaker 7: ESPN Wednesday Hockey Night. Like that was that was it
- 28:18Speaker 7: for us. So when I got that opportunity I was.
- 28:22Speaker 7: I mean I felt like I had, you know, accomplished
- 28:24Speaker 7: all my goals, reached my dreams, and the rest was
- 28:26Speaker 7: going to be gravy.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it was always unusual to me hear about like
- 28:30Speaker 1: in Texas as big as football days and obviously people
- 28:33Speaker 1: love the Cowboys, but like you know, five night Lights
- 28:35Speaker 1: and high school football is really special in Minnesota. I'd
- 28:38Speaker 1: hear people say even after the while came back that like,
- 28:40Speaker 1: there's nothing bigger than like high school hockey.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Ago, how can that be?
- 28:43Speaker 1: There's an NHL team there, but like that's that's the
- 28:46Speaker 1: passion that the fans have for hockey any level.
- 28:48Speaker 7: It feels like in Minnesota, well, it's a cultural thing too,
- 28:51Speaker 7: And I think that that's what it makes Minnesota unique
- 28:54Speaker 7: and really special is you know that weekend in March
- 28:59Speaker 7: every single year, the state comes together and to have
- 29:03Speaker 7: nineteen thousand people watch, you know, high school kids play
- 29:06Speaker 7: in a hockey tournament. I mean there's there's nothing there's
- 29:09Speaker 7: nothing cooler and as cool as it is, you know,
- 29:12Speaker 7: for like the game, it's like the the like the festive,
- 29:17Speaker 7: the festival of it. It's like a very like it
- 29:20Speaker 7: just it galvanizes the state. It brings people together, and
- 29:22Speaker 7: I think that's what's so cool about it is you
- 29:24Speaker 7: you know, you'll have one section of people from way
- 29:28Speaker 7: northern Minnesota, a section of people from southern Minnesota, a
- 29:30Speaker 7: couple of sections of people from you know, the the
- 29:33Speaker 7: metro area, and they're all chanting and rooting for their
- 29:36Speaker 7: teams and their players and same thing. I mean, that
- 29:39Speaker 7: was like my childhood dream was to be on that ice,
- 29:41Speaker 7: So that was like another huge moment for me in
- 29:44Speaker 7: my life.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's pretty cool to think about. Obviously, you were
- 29:47Speaker 1: an incredible player, particularly with the Jets. To think of
- 29:50Speaker 1: all those memories you had there. I went to Winnipeg
- 29:51Speaker 1: for first time this season Amazon Prime, got to see
- 29:53Speaker 1: what it's like there.
- 29:54Speaker 2: That culture makes me think of Minnesota, just how much
- 29:56Speaker 2: they love the hockey. They're in the passion.
- 29:58Speaker 1: What was it like arriving in Winnipeg Jets two point
- 30:01Speaker 1: zero after the team had been gone for fifteen years.
- 30:04Speaker 6: Yeah, the people were just so excited.
- 30:09Speaker 7: The atmosphere was electric every single night. I mean, there
- 30:12Speaker 7: there are some some games kind of especially early on
- 30:14Speaker 7: I remember where it wasn't really going our way, and
- 30:17Speaker 7: I mean they're.
- 30:18Speaker 6: Still chanting they're still.
- 30:21Speaker 7: You know, that was what made it incredibly special in
- 30:24Speaker 7: what you know made playing in that market so unique
- 30:30Speaker 7: is that you're playing in front of, like us, this
- 30:32Speaker 7: small community, and you look up in the crowd and
- 30:35Speaker 7: you're gonna know a ton of those people and they
- 30:38Speaker 7: genuinely like love this team, like they love the team.
- 30:42Speaker 7: And I think that as players, that gives you a
- 30:45Speaker 7: little bit extra you know, boost to go out there
- 30:48Speaker 7: and kind of like do a little bit extra, go
- 30:50Speaker 7: that extra mile. You're you're playing for yourself, you're playing
- 30:53Speaker 7: for your teammates, you're playing for your families, but like
- 30:54Speaker 7: that is a community that you want to play for.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent, you're right. They pack in those
- 30:59Speaker 1: fifteen thousand fans are going nuts. This current Jets team,
- 31:02Speaker 1: look at they had something special. Unfortunately able to advance
- 31:05Speaker 1: past the second round. Again, you're not there just asking
- 31:07Speaker 1: as an observer, an elite player, what do you think
- 31:10Speaker 1: happened there with Winnipeg.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that you know, first and foremost, they
- 31:15Speaker 7: ran into a really tough matchup in the first round.
- 31:18Speaker 7: I mean, when when that matchup came out, you win
- 31:20Speaker 7: the President's Trophy and then you're playing against maybe the
- 31:23Speaker 7: hottest team in the league going into the first round.
- 31:26Speaker 7: That's a tough matchup. And I think that matchup, as
- 31:31Speaker 7: well as how Saint Louis played them like that was
- 31:34Speaker 7: a war every single night. I mean, I think a
- 31:36Speaker 7: lot of guys were pretty beat up after that series.
- 31:39Speaker 6: And you know, they I don't want.
- 31:42Speaker 7: To use the word lucky, but they snuck by Saint Louis,
- 31:44Speaker 7: and so there was kind of this feeling that maybe
- 31:47Speaker 7: getting getting through that round was going to like propel
- 31:51Speaker 7: them and and and and maybe that was going to
- 31:52Speaker 7: like push them towards you know, who knows how far.
- 31:56Speaker 7: But to me, it just looked like in that Dallas
- 31:59Speaker 7: series they were out of gas. That Saint Louis series
- 32:01Speaker 7: took a ton out of them.
- 32:03Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:04Speaker 7: And I think that they have an incredible core to
- 32:07Speaker 7: build around. There's just little tweaks. I think that that
- 32:10Speaker 7: team needs to get to that next level, and I
- 32:12Speaker 7: think that it could be out there for them, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 7: this offseason. I don't think they need any home runs.
- 32:17Speaker 7: You know, they have the guys that can put the
- 32:19Speaker 7: puck in the net. They got a pretty good goalie
- 32:21Speaker 7: I've heard, you know, they got some some really great
- 32:24Speaker 7: pieces on the back end. So it's almost like what Florida,
- 32:28Speaker 7: You know, did I think when Bill Zito took over
- 32:31Speaker 7: and they had this great core, he made the big
- 32:32Speaker 7: swing for a Mattkachuck obviously, but you know then it's
- 32:36Speaker 7: just how can you.
- 32:37Speaker 6: Supplement that core to kind of push past to that
- 32:40Speaker 6: next level?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Connor Hellbuck winning his third Vestna, first time Hart
- 32:43Speaker 1: Trophy winning, obviously, Swipeley Connor, all those great stars up front,
- 32:46Speaker 1: Josh Morrissey as well.
- 32:48Speaker 2: I'm curious.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Also there's rumors right now, Blake about maybe hockey went
- 32:51Speaker 1: back to Atlanta. You're in Atlanta very long with the Thrashers.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But I'm a little skeptical myself. I just think it
- 32:57Speaker 1: hasn't worked out the past. Maybe it can be different
- 32:59Speaker 1: depending on where the arena could be. But what do
- 33:00Speaker 1: you think about potentially NHL coming to Atlanta.
- 33:03Speaker 7: I think just everything on paper makes a ton of sense.
- 33:08Speaker 7: It's a huge market. It's more or less the capital
- 33:11Speaker 7: of that region of the United States. So from an
- 33:14Speaker 7: NHL standpoint, it makes a ton of sense to try
- 33:16Speaker 7: to make that work. I think that what probably gives
- 33:20Speaker 7: us a little bit more juice, right now is the
- 33:22Speaker 7: success that that team in Vegas had not a traditional
- 33:25Speaker 7: hockey market, no reason why the team should be successful.
- 33:28Speaker 7: And you know it's one of like the pre eminent
- 33:31Speaker 7: or premiere franchises now in the NHL. Like that is
- 33:34Speaker 7: a destination now. And the most important piece of this puzzle,
- 33:39Speaker 7: which I think the first two iterations of the Atlanta
- 33:42Speaker 7: teams failed at, is the team needs to have success early,
- 33:45Speaker 7: so you know they that there needs to be a
- 33:49Speaker 7: model built where that team is going to have success
- 33:53Speaker 7: because it's almost like the field of dreams thing where
- 33:55Speaker 7: if you build it, they will come. Yeah, you got
- 33:58Speaker 7: to put a quality team on the ice and give
- 34:00Speaker 7: people a reason to go watch, because you've seen it
- 34:03Speaker 7: in Vegas, you've seen it some of these new markets.
- 34:05Speaker 7: When you get people through the door and they watch
- 34:07Speaker 7: a NHL game live, they're hooked.
- 34:09Speaker 6: They love it.
- 34:11Speaker 7: That's that's I think our game's biggest challenge is how
- 34:13Speaker 7: do we get people in the seat to where our
- 34:17Speaker 7: product now takes over and it's so good. It's just
- 34:20Speaker 7: you know the success of the Thrashers, I think it
- 34:24Speaker 7: faded really quick because they didn't put a quality product
- 34:28Speaker 7: on the ice. And I think that no matter what
- 34:30Speaker 7: the sport is. Like, if you know the Dallas Cowboys
- 34:34Speaker 7: have five straight years of losing, like the interest kind
- 34:36Speaker 7: of drops. It's just the way the nature of being
- 34:39Speaker 7: a fan goes.
- 34:40Speaker 2: Now you're one hundred percent right.
- 34:41Speaker 1: People keep talking about you ever think that there'll be
- 34:43Speaker 1: six straight Sailing Cups in Florida's in the lightning in Florida.
- 34:46Speaker 1: I'm like, listen, if there's a winner, people will go
- 34:48Speaker 1: there's twenty thousand fans packet in Sunrise going nuts.
- 34:51Speaker 2: It's not like it isn't can It's not like it's
- 34:52Speaker 2: in traditional markets.
- 34:53Speaker 1: But you're right, if fans are winners, as you see
- 34:55Speaker 1: it in Vegas, it certainly worked out.
- 34:56Speaker 3: I'll go ahead.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I just wanted to get back to your time
- 35:00Speaker 4: with the Thrashers while we're on that topic. Obviously weren't
- 35:03Speaker 4: there that long, but I would love to hear any
- 35:06Speaker 4: memories of your time with that franchise and at that
- 35:09Speaker 4: moment in your career.
- 35:13Speaker 7: Yeah, that was that was definitely a stepping stone moment.
- 35:15Speaker 7: I mean it was it was very bittersweet. It was
- 35:18Speaker 7: really tough to get traded from Boston, especially with where
- 35:23Speaker 7: that team was at. Like you knew that there was
- 35:25Speaker 7: something special there and there was a real opportunity for
- 35:28Speaker 7: that team, and obviously they wanted that year, so that
- 35:30Speaker 7: made it, in hindsight even more tough. But strictly individually speaking,
- 35:36Speaker 7: you know, getting traded there. Craig Ramsey was my coach.
- 35:38Speaker 7: I had him as an assistant coach in Boston for
- 35:40Speaker 7: a couple of years. He basically took me, took me
- 35:43Speaker 7: aside and said, you're just gonna play. Go play like
- 35:46Speaker 7: there's no don't worry about making mistakes, don't worry about anything.
- 35:49Speaker 7: Just go out there and play. You're gonna be playing,
- 35:51Speaker 7: and let's see what happens. That was what I needed
- 35:54Speaker 7: at that point in my career. I needed somebody just
- 35:56Speaker 7: to you know, sort of take the chains off and
- 35:59Speaker 7: just say, hey, go go do your thing and let's
- 36:01Speaker 7: see what let's see what it looks like. So strictly
- 36:04Speaker 7: individually speaking, it was a It was kind of a
- 36:06Speaker 7: turning point in my career where there was a little
- 36:08Speaker 7: bit of freedom given to me and some opportunity, and
- 36:12Speaker 7: lucky enough, I was able to take advantage of it.
- 36:14Speaker 4: And were there specific moments with that market or the
- 36:17Speaker 4: fans where you kind of realized, oh this is this
- 36:20Speaker 4: is a little different for a kid who grew up
- 36:22Speaker 4: in the state of hockey.
- 36:24Speaker 6: Oh yeah, Uh.
- 36:26Speaker 7: There was a couple There was a couple of moments.
- 36:28Speaker 7: I mean, I remember there was a I believe we
- 36:31Speaker 7: were playing on a Tuesday night in Atlanta against Florida.
- 36:35Speaker 7: And keep in mind, coming from Boston that you know
- 36:39Speaker 7: that TD Garden was eighteen nineteen thousand, like rowdy every
- 36:42Speaker 7: single night at that point, and there I think they
- 36:46Speaker 7: announced five thousand people in the crowd. There couldn't there
- 36:48Speaker 7: couldn't have been two thousand people there, and I had
- 36:51Speaker 7: it dawned on me. I was like, like, I could
- 36:54Speaker 7: you could do almost anything out here and nobody would care.
- 36:58Speaker 7: So that was kind of a wild moment, going from
- 37:00Speaker 7: like a pressure cooker in Boston where like every single
- 37:03Speaker 7: move see him to feel like it was scrutinized, and
- 37:05Speaker 7: now it's like nobody's even here to care. And you know,
- 37:11Speaker 7: then another moment that's really funny. My dad was at
- 37:15Speaker 7: a game at some point when I was there, and
- 37:19Speaker 7: we went into overtime. Overtime ended, we went into a shootout,
- 37:23Speaker 7: and so the first player was going in the shootout
- 37:25Speaker 7: and there was a gentleman and his son sitting next
- 37:28Speaker 7: to my dad and he starts to panic.
- 37:30Speaker 6: He's like, where's everyone? Where'd everyone go?
- 37:31Speaker 7: Why are they letting him just go in all alone
- 37:33Speaker 7: without anyone defending him? And so my dad had to
- 37:36Speaker 7: explain to him, Well, after overtime they do this, everyone
- 37:39Speaker 7: gets a BREAKAWAYO. So that was kind of another funny
- 37:43Speaker 7: moment of Yeah, we're in a new, new place for sure.
- 37:48Speaker 4: That the problem you probably had when you arrived in Winnipeg,
- 37:51Speaker 4: where everyone there, I'm assuming knew the game inside out
- 37:54Speaker 4: and probably knew the whole roster already by the time
- 37:56Speaker 4: you got you guys got there.
- 37:58Speaker 6: Oh did they ever? Yeah? I wasn't.
- 38:00Speaker 7: I was not fortunate enough to play in the first
- 38:03Speaker 7: preseason game in Winnipeg.
- 38:05Speaker 6: They split the squad.
- 38:07Speaker 7: I got to go to Columbus and the rest of
- 38:09Speaker 7: the boys stayed in that first preseason game in Winnipeg. Yeah,
- 38:14Speaker 7: preseason game, I mean apparently was out of control. I
- 38:17Speaker 7: think I think, you know, buff laid a couple guys out.
- 38:20Speaker 7: I think Mark Stewart might have got into a fight
- 38:22Speaker 7: within like the first thirty seconds of the game. So yeah,
- 38:27Speaker 7: you could you could feel that vibe like the minute
- 38:30Speaker 7: you know, we got going in training camp, the minute
- 38:32Speaker 7: the game started. That first home game was I mean
- 38:35Speaker 7: that felt like a you know, a playoff game. It
- 38:38Speaker 7: was sot A lot of really cool moments from that
- 38:40Speaker 7: first year.
- 38:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you've had the distinction of playing with both Chara
- 38:45Speaker 4: and Buff. I mean, two of the biggest most intimidating
- 38:49Speaker 4: dudes at least in recent history, which.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Went scarier in the game for one thing.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And is there a particular moment for either one where
- 38:58Speaker 4: you realized, oh my god, this guy is just an
- 39:00Speaker 4: absolute monster out there.
- 39:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean there's like there's no picking a winner
- 39:08Speaker 7: in that.
- 39:09Speaker 6: I don't think. You know. The scary thing about both.
- 39:16Speaker 7: Of them is that like they had a switch where
- 39:19Speaker 7: I think that like there was no like they just
- 39:23Speaker 7: didn't care kind of what happened to you anymore, you know.
- 39:26Speaker 7: And and Buff in particular, like when he flipped that switch.
- 39:29Speaker 7: I mean you saw it a couple of times with
- 39:30Speaker 7: like how he hit people, but also like he'd be
- 39:33Speaker 7: willing to break his stick over your head. And and
- 39:36Speaker 7: he's just so so I think you have a guy
- 39:38Speaker 7: that's that size, that moves that well, and he's got
- 39:43Speaker 7: that mean streak to him. That's I think what makes
- 39:45Speaker 7: those guys very unique because that's a that's a complete
- 39:49Speaker 7: package where it can be really intimidating and it's it's.
- 39:52Speaker 2: A lot more fun.
- 39:53Speaker 7: Let me put it this way, it's a lot more
- 39:54Speaker 7: fun being on their side than going against them.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Right, And getting back to the State Hockey Tournament in Minnesota,
- 40:02Speaker 4: we're all really familiar with those amazing all hockey hair
- 40:06Speaker 4: teams from the tournament every year. Was that a thing
- 40:08Speaker 4: guys were doing when you were in the tournament? And
- 40:11Speaker 4: what was your what was your salad of choice for
- 40:14Speaker 4: your big moment?
- 40:15Speaker 6: Unfortunately not, Yeah, unfortunately not.
- 40:17Speaker 7: That was not a thing yet. Social media hadn't been
- 40:19Speaker 7: born yet. I think I still had a flip phone
- 40:22Speaker 7: back then. So yeah, no, nothing cool like that. I
- 40:27Speaker 7: think the coolest thing you got to do is just
- 40:29Speaker 7: skate to the blue line, look in the camera and
- 40:31Speaker 7: say hi to somebody. So that that's about the extent
- 40:35Speaker 7: of it from what I played.
- 40:37Speaker 4: And last thing for me is from your time in Winnipeg. Obviously,
- 40:42Speaker 4: you know the thing things ended there a certain way.
- 40:44Speaker 4: I don't know how you would refer to the way
- 40:46Speaker 4: things happen with the captaincy and then of course coming
- 40:49Speaker 4: to New York. Now that some times passed, maybe you've
- 40:51Speaker 4: had a little more time to to think about it.
- 40:54Speaker 4: What do you what is I guess your main takeaway
- 40:57Speaker 4: from the end of your time in Winnipeg after such
- 40:59Speaker 4: an incredible run there with the Jets.
- 41:03Speaker 7: Yeah, I have nothing but just the best memories and
- 41:07Speaker 7: experiences in Winnipeg.
- 41:08Speaker 6: And you know, all those things they happened for a reason.
- 41:12Speaker 7: And you know, I am incredibly grateful I got to
- 41:16Speaker 7: be a captain of an NHL team.
- 41:18Speaker 6: You know, not many people get to say that.
- 41:20Speaker 7: So I look back on my time in Winnipeg with
- 41:23Speaker 7: a ton of just incredible memories and yeah, like I said,
- 41:29Speaker 7: you know, nothing but but positive experiences for my time,
- 41:34Speaker 7: you know, getting to be a captain of an NHL team,
- 41:36Speaker 7: and you know, all good things come to an end,
- 41:38Speaker 7: so you know, at the end, it was it was
- 41:40Speaker 7: my time to move on, and I truly felt that way.
- 41:43Speaker 7: And you know, I feel great that, you know, the
- 41:47Speaker 7: whatever my group of Winnipeg Jets helped build, you know,
- 41:51Speaker 7: has set that organization up to continue to have great success.
- 41:55Speaker 7: So yeah, I'm extremely proud of like the foundation that
- 41:59Speaker 7: myself and a lot of my teammates that were kind
- 42:02Speaker 7: of in that first group of Jets two point zero.
- 42:06Speaker 7: You know, that foundation that we built, you know, to
- 42:09Speaker 7: help that franchise have have success going forward.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and it just was obviously we we we didn't
- 42:15Speaker 4: get into your your actual playing status at the moment,
- 42:19Speaker 4: but is there anything in particular you just want to
- 42:22Speaker 4: share about kind of what you're what you're enjoying now
- 42:24Speaker 4: as a dad, you know, at this point in your
- 42:28Speaker 4: in your life. You mentioned your your oldest being in
- 42:30Speaker 4: a tournament recently, So what what is your main focus
- 42:33Speaker 4: right now?
- 42:34Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm I'm coaching youth hockey.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the best.
- 42:40Speaker 7: I was just in Chicago for for a Mike tournament.
- 42:42Speaker 7: So that's that's where I'm at now. But it's it's
- 42:45Speaker 7: a blast, it's it's it's so much fun getting to
- 42:47Speaker 7: share this with my kids, you know, and and now
- 42:50Speaker 7: getting to be there fan and cheerleader and trying to
- 42:53Speaker 7: help them with little things if they want to help. Uh.
- 42:56Speaker 7: You know, kids tend to not listen to their parents,
- 42:58Speaker 7: so sometimes that's a that that's a challenge as their
- 43:01Speaker 7: coach too, is you know, it's in one you're out
- 43:03Speaker 7: the other year.
- 43:04Speaker 6: So we're having a lot.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Of fun with it though, And like I said, there's
- 43:07Speaker 7: there's nothing better than watching them, you know, do some
- 43:11Speaker 7: of the same things that I got to do, and
- 43:13Speaker 7: all the youth tournaments and just what youth hockey is
- 43:15Speaker 7: all about, and going through that with them has been
- 43:17Speaker 7: a blast.
- 43:18Speaker 1: I was gonna say, just tell the kids listen. Don't
- 43:20Speaker 1: listen to me off the ice, but on the ace
- 43:21Speaker 1: you have to listen to me. Okay, if you don't
- 43:23Speaker 1: listen to bedtime or eat your vegetables, but on these seriously,
- 43:25Speaker 1: when I'm trying to help you out here.
- 43:27Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, exactly. They for some reason, they you know,
- 43:32Speaker 7: it doesn't click. It hasn't clicked yet, you know, their
- 43:35Speaker 7: their teammates. They they look at me, uh, with a
- 43:38Speaker 7: little bit more respect. And my kids are the ones
- 43:40Speaker 7: that aren't on a knee, aren't listening. And so trust me,
- 43:43Speaker 7: we've had we've had a lot of a lot of
- 43:45Speaker 7: drive home talks about.
- 43:46Speaker 3: That growing paints as well.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Blake Wheeler obviously outstanding NHL player for a long time.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Hopefully you see it back on the ice. Class act
- 43:54Speaker 1: both on and off the ice. These were great stories
- 43:55Speaker 1: man can't can't thank you enough. This was great stuff.
- 43:57Speaker 2: Hopefully well chat again at some point down the road.
- 43:59Speaker 6: All right, guys, thanks a lot for having me.
- 44:10Speaker 1: We discussed on the previous episode, bation on the script,
- 44:12Speaker 1: some of the rosters coming out.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Amazing interview. By the way, Now, I'm glad you liked it, Jeddy.
- 44:16Speaker 5: Obviously you could not. I was not able to be there,
- 44:18Speaker 5: and I'm glad that you took over and you crushed it.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Teal dominant as well. He had some great questions and
- 44:23Speaker 1: he fed me all the questions. Yea, I love to
- 44:25Speaker 1: tell that's right, Cinophon sixty. When the last time you
- 44:29Speaker 1: saw a good Will hunting JD, I'm sure you've seen
- 44:30Speaker 1: it at some point in your life.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Uh, probably like two weeks ago.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Really, Al, so you're a big good Will hunting fan? Yeah, hello,
- 44:38Speaker 1: so I saw it the one time. Obviously, he came
- 44:40Speaker 1: up ninety seven, really enjoyed it, and I just never
- 44:42Speaker 1: got to run this thing again.
- 44:43Speaker 2: There's so many good movies.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Obviously came out that your Boogie Nights in particular is
- 44:45Speaker 1: a big fan of. But I said, obviously reading this,
- 44:47Speaker 1: Rober Willie's not gonna watch good Will hunting again, So
- 44:50Speaker 1: pop it in.
- 44:51Speaker 2: I gotta be honest.
- 44:51Speaker 1: First ten minutes, I'm like little dated reminds you how
- 44:54Speaker 1: much I hate people from Boston annoying accents. These are
- 44:57Speaker 1: a bunch of annoying guys riding around their cars, taking
- 44:59Speaker 1: their tough shit. They get in the fight fights in
- 45:01Speaker 1: his brutal gus fan Sands directing it like he Scorsese.
- 45:03Speaker 2: This terrible slow motion close, a bunch of the go
- 45:06Speaker 2: this is this is.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Pretty garbage, acual. I might just fast forward just the
- 45:08Speaker 1: Robin Williams scenes. We finally get to the twenty minute mark, okay,
- 45:12Speaker 1: and once Robin shows up, here we go. Plus, I
- 45:15Speaker 1: do love Stelling scars Guard. He's great playing the professor
- 45:18Speaker 1: who is just so aerodyite and uptight. He's got the
- 45:20Speaker 1: day scarf, which you already loves.
- 45:22Speaker 3: That is the best. When he lights he lights the
- 45:23Speaker 3: papers on fire. To me, this is a yoe.
- 45:27Speaker 2: That scene is so comically he lights. Somebody just wants no, no,
- 45:31Speaker 2: He's blowing up the asses by the tell you man.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Once Robin showed up and Billy Crystal close friend of
- 45:35Speaker 1: Robert Williams. He said in that book he goes Honestly,
- 45:37Speaker 1: I think it's his best performance because it's the only
- 45:39Speaker 1: one that I saw that I really didn't see Robin like,
- 45:41Speaker 1: I just saw him as Sean Maguire. And I tell you, man,
- 45:43Speaker 1: those sees him and Damon together, it's like raging bowling
- 45:45Speaker 1: in the ring.
- 45:46Speaker 2: It was absolutely outstanding, especially that Damon.
- 45:48Speaker 1: It's just such a prick. And again I find him obnoxious,
- 45:51Speaker 1: but that is the point of the character. He is
- 45:52Speaker 1: this guy who's brilliant but a real dick. So many
- 45:55Speaker 1: people are from Boston, and he's testy. He starts blocking
- 45:57Speaker 1: Robin's wife, who he doesn't know is dead. Robin grabs
- 46:00Speaker 1: him by the throat. Hey, don't you watch a chief
- 46:03Speaker 1: what you say?
- 46:03Speaker 3: He's gonna better. I can hear brigagitate.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Gordon Wood times up, and then he gives him that
- 46:09Speaker 1: great monologue how you don't know anything, you're just a kid.
- 46:11Speaker 1: You know, a whole speech about Game six, seventy five
- 46:13Speaker 1: year old series Carlton Fisk and you know it wasn't there, girl.
- 46:17Speaker 2: It's amazing and it's really as well as movies j D.
- 46:21Speaker 1: You don't see anymore now, right, And those guys said
- 46:22Speaker 1: that at the time, like I do think the backstory
- 46:24Speaker 1: behind Goodble Hunting is as fastening as the actual movie.
- 46:27Speaker 1: These guys are not quite journeyman actors, but they're missing
- 46:29Speaker 1: out in the big roles. They both audi incentivele but
- 46:31Speaker 1: now didn't get it. I'mitioning for school ties. No, Brendan
- 46:34Speaker 1: Fraser got it. Why don't we write our own script?
- 46:36Speaker 1: They write their own script. They win an Academy Award
- 46:38Speaker 1: and it's becoming massive superstars and Damon is the lead role.
- 46:41Speaker 1: But I gotta tell you, Affleck, I do love that
- 46:43Speaker 1: scene where you know, he's talking, Hey, what happened with
- 46:46Speaker 1: the girl?
- 46:46Speaker 2: Oh?
- 46:46Speaker 3: She left?
- 46:47Speaker 1: Okay, I'll sorry to hear about that, and he's like,
- 46:48Speaker 1: you know, you're such a smart kid, and Damon gives
- 46:50Speaker 1: him the you know, I'm tired everyone seeing it.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Oh it to yourself.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Affleck's so good in that scene that if you owe
- 46:55Speaker 1: it to me, you owe it to me. If twenty
- 46:57Speaker 1: years from now, we're gonna watch all of us, Yeah,
- 46:59Speaker 1: we're gonna go watch our kids playing Lily like oll Kill.
- 47:01Speaker 5: You know what's the best part of my day The
- 47:04Speaker 5: walk up from Acadia House. I'm gonna knock and you're
- 47:10Speaker 5: not gonna be there.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Because I killed the habit you have. You got the
- 47:15Speaker 2: winning lottery tick.
- 47:16Speaker 5: And here's the thing with that two things. I have
- 47:18Speaker 5: two points in that movie. Yeah, is he actually smart
- 47:22Speaker 5: or does he just have a photographic memory.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Well, here's the part that this, I mean, you do
- 47:26Speaker 1: have to stretch credulity here. So this guy is a
- 47:29Speaker 1: what a word, fuck.
- 47:33Speaker 3: Hard as a rock right now.
- 47:38Speaker 2: Take a.
- 47:40Speaker 1: He's one to five smartest guys in the world when
- 47:42Speaker 1: that comes to mathematics, because scars Guard is in the
- 47:44Speaker 1: top ten.
- 47:45Speaker 2: And he says to him, only five people can understand this.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And this guy just has to be a janitor's hanging
- 47:49Speaker 1: out boss with his buddy's getting drunkn and dropping lines
- 47:53Speaker 1: at bars while he's picking up mini driver.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Like I was like, all right, I mean whatever, I guess.
- 47:57Speaker 2: I guess. I'm not saying tough guys can't be smart,
- 47:59Speaker 2: but stretching a little bit. The guy's like a genius level.
- 48:03Speaker 5: My favorite line apparently the line at the end when
- 48:05Speaker 5: he picks up the paper and says, I got to
- 48:08Speaker 5: see about a girl and he goes smart smart ass,
- 48:11Speaker 5: I think is what he says.
- 48:12Speaker 2: No, so I read the book, so that yeah, he
- 48:14Speaker 2: that was that libbed correct.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they did ten takes where he just he looks
- 48:17Speaker 1: the note it's back Damon's voice over and says, hey,
- 48:20Speaker 1: tell your professor, I'm not gonna show up the job
- 48:22Speaker 1: to go see about a girl. I probably Robin looks
- 48:24Speaker 1: at it, ten takes something and then to take the uses,
- 48:26Speaker 1: he goes, son of a Bitch stole my line, and
- 48:28Speaker 1: Damon was watching it play back, tells Van Sant the direction,
- 48:31Speaker 1: you got it.
- 48:31Speaker 2: That's unbelievable.
- 48:32Speaker 8: That's the that's awesome and that's honestly well, the most
- 48:35Speaker 8: memorable parts of the movie is the Son of a
- 48:37Speaker 8: Bitch stole tell a great performance by George Plimpton, of course,
- 48:40Speaker 8: the noted writer, playing one of the therapists who Damon
- 48:43Speaker 8: starts in furry that he's a raving homosexual and Plimpton
- 48:47Speaker 8: takes umbrage at that.
- 48:49Speaker 4: So yeah, I know, great performance from George Plimpton, who's
- 48:52Speaker 4: not even an actor, playing as you said, the uptight therapist,
- 48:55Speaker 4: and uh yeah, that's that's one of the things that
- 48:57Speaker 4: sticks out for me. He's in the film for like
- 48:58Speaker 4: ninety seconds and that's always a great a fun early
- 49:02Speaker 4: scene for me that I enjoyed the movie. Plus Geordie Plimpton,
- 49:05Speaker 4: the father of experiential journalism. He actually played a preseason
- 49:09Speaker 4: game for the Boston Bruins.
- 49:11Speaker 1: That's right, paper Line, I think is the book where
- 49:13Speaker 1: he played. It was a quarterback for the tread lines.
- 49:15Speaker 3: To play a quarterback for the Lions.
- 49:17Speaker 4: And then there was a book called Open Net where
- 49:19Speaker 4: he played goal for the Bruins. He was like forty
- 49:22Speaker 4: eight years old too and.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Did not know how to skate.
- 49:24Speaker 4: I love it, George, But yeah, George Plimpton, great performance.
- 49:28Speaker 2: An Oscar winning role, and performance by Robin Williams.
- 49:31Speaker 1: He said when he won the Oscar, obviously he was
- 49:33Speaker 1: so thrilled in his speech, you know, he thanked Ben
- 49:35Speaker 1: and Matt thanked Harvey Winston, which has not aged well.
- 49:37Speaker 1: You mentioned his dad was past, and then after you
- 49:39Speaker 1: say he saw Burt Reynolds, because Burt Renin's are pretty best,
- 49:42Speaker 1: and Robin's like, I'm sorry, man, like Boogi Nights is awesome.
- 49:44Speaker 2: He probably should have won too, but this is the
- 49:46Speaker 2: way it goes.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Robin had not won for Awakenings and dead Posts aside
- 49:49Speaker 1: in other movies. So it's just a great movement. I really,
- 49:51Speaker 1: I really do think it will. Huntings held up, Well,
- 49:53Speaker 1: I haven't seen it a long time. I had not.
- 49:54Speaker 1: I'm glad he saw it recently, tal go watch it again.
- 49:57Speaker 1: It's really really well written and well dumb. Everybody, especially
- 49:59Speaker 1: that cast.
- 50:00Speaker 3: All right, they're gonna be back in here for gord sake.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Gordon, would do you like Apple?
- 50:05Speaker 3: My brother loves that am Apples?
- 50:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I was like, it's ok.
- 50:07Speaker 3: I kind of rollway my friend.
- 50:09Speaker 2: Yeah, my boys wicked smart.
- 50:12Speaker 1: So we went over the European Well yeah, Casey Affleck
- 50:14Speaker 1: also very irritating, at least in that movie. We went
- 50:17Speaker 1: over the European players announced the Olympics in our last episode,
- 50:20Speaker 1: just missing the Canadian in the US team.
- 50:21Speaker 2: So now you're all waiting, Hey, who are the six?
- 50:22Speaker 2: They're gonna make it.
- 50:23Speaker 1: The Americans announced Quinn Hughes, Jack Eichel, Austin Matthews, Matthew Kachuck,
- 50:28Speaker 1: Brady Kuchuck, and Charlie McAvoy. Canada name's Mick, David Crosby, McKinnon, mccarr,
- 50:34Speaker 1: Brayden Point and Sam Rein Hurt.
- 50:36Speaker 2: Nobody cares yet, but let's go Canada.
- 50:38Speaker 3: I don't care. We'lle can give a give a baker's
- 50:41Speaker 3: fuck about that. I had.
- 50:44Speaker 5: I had to talk about that at the finals. I
- 50:46Speaker 5: was like, we got viewership. I'm like I and I
- 50:48Speaker 5: said it on air. I was like, I do not
- 50:50Speaker 5: care about this one bit, don't.
- 50:53Speaker 3: No dud it. In August. What are we trying to
- 50:56Speaker 3: sell here? It's the Olympics.
- 50:57Speaker 5: Everybody's watching correct, first time NHL players back in a while.
- 51:01Speaker 5: It's gonna be so much fun. I don't care who's going.
- 51:05Speaker 5: It's gonna be It's not about the play is It's
- 51:07Speaker 5: about the crest on the front, the maple leaf on
- 51:11Speaker 5: the front.
- 51:11Speaker 3: Go Canada Go.
- 51:12Speaker 1: We discussed the Stanley Cup getting dented with Phil Pritcher,
- 51:15Speaker 1: but Stanley appears to sustain some serious damage once again.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Cameras appear to show Stanley being pastoral, a noticeable chip
- 51:21Speaker 1: taken at the top of the bowl. Damien's gonna chip
- 51:23Speaker 1: on his shoulder and Goodwill hunting this Stanley is missing
- 51:26Speaker 1: a chip? Are the Panthers a little too rough?
- 51:28Speaker 2: Now?
- 51:28Speaker 5: Get a little too big for the bridges here? I
- 51:31Speaker 5: like it, you know, rough it up a little bit.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Interesting? Take you don't mind Lord Stanley getting bruised?
- 51:37Speaker 5: Well, my gripe I have, and I'll give you my
- 51:39Speaker 5: gripe I have with with the media world is you know,
- 51:43Speaker 5: we get through the finals and it's over, and you know,
- 51:46Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm itching to get on a plane to
- 51:48Speaker 5: get home, and I'm getting like texts from guys like
- 51:50Speaker 5: the empty netters. Guys are texting me and they're just
- 51:52Speaker 5: like like we rage and it's the Cup night, and
- 51:55Speaker 5: I'm like, what do I give a fuck about the
- 51:57Speaker 5: Cup night? I'm like, I want to go home. I've
- 51:59Speaker 5: had enough. I've done my job. My job is that.
- 52:02Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm not I didn't I'm not part of
- 52:05Speaker 5: this team. I'm like, I'm happy for the guys, but
- 52:06Speaker 5: I'm not going to the elbow room until six in
- 52:08Speaker 5: the morning being like, can I.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Get a thiep out of the Cup?
- 52:12Speaker 2: Now?
- 52:12Speaker 3: You don't care?
- 52:14Speaker 5: You know, jeez, nothing against the fans, but like I'm
- 52:18Speaker 5: not saying, like the fans, yes, that's amazing, and the
- 52:20Speaker 5: people that, like, you know, close family and friends. But
- 52:22Speaker 5: I'm like the media, Like i'd like some media people
- 52:25Speaker 5: being like, oh, tonight's to night. I rip it up,
- 52:26Speaker 5: and I'm like, I've been going hard for two weeks.
- 52:29Speaker 5: His whole finals last time to.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Sleep, Sam the Man, Let's acknowledge Sam Rydhert just crushing life,
- 52:35Speaker 1: as Taul put it, married his wife Jessica. Fifty seven
- 52:38Speaker 1: goals twenty twenty three, twenty four second Austin Matthews scores
- 52:41Speaker 1: the Cup winning goal. Florida wins the Cup for the
- 52:43Speaker 1: first time in Francis history, signs a sixty nine million
- 52:46Speaker 1: dollar contract extension. Wins at four Nations with Team Canada.
- 52:50Speaker 1: Scores four goals in the Cup clinching game as Florida
- 52:52Speaker 1: wins the second straight year and biggest one of all.
- 52:55Speaker 1: Gets named as one of the first six for Canada
- 52:57Speaker 1: the Olympics next year.
- 52:58Speaker 3: What a run for Sam, Sam who Sam Bennet, Sam
- 53:02Speaker 3: Ryd Hurt. Oh yeah he did. Yeah, that's great.
- 53:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm happy for it. Yeah, Sam Reinhart, I listen,
- 53:12Speaker 5: I think not enough credit goes to this defensive game. Honestly,
- 53:15Speaker 5: that series with bark Off, like they had to play
- 53:19Speaker 5: against Connor and Leon and they shut them down and
- 53:21Speaker 5: and Leon had a great speech visibly upset. Of course,
- 53:27Speaker 5: why wouldn't they be. They've lost twice to Florida. That
- 53:30Speaker 5: absolutely suck And apparently like somebody tweeted out that if
- 53:35Speaker 5: this was like miked up, it was like personal, like
- 53:38Speaker 5: the way guys were talking to each other, like there's
- 53:40Speaker 5: visible hate. People were saying some nasty stuff to each other.
- 53:44Speaker 5: But Leon said it, he's like, you know, the first
- 53:47Speaker 5: two lines other than that game six where Ryan Hart,
- 53:49Speaker 5: you know what, goes off for four goals. He goes,
- 53:51Speaker 5: they didn't really do anything offensively. He goes, it was
- 53:54Speaker 5: the lost to Ryning line in the Loundell line. He's like,
- 53:56Speaker 5: they kind of dominated us. And he's like it's tough
- 53:59Speaker 5: because you know that's just a wave of attack, the
- 54:01Speaker 5: waves of attack that Florida has. But Sam Reinhardt defensive
- 54:04Speaker 5: did such a good job but shutting down Leon and
- 54:07Speaker 5: Connor the way his stick, he has such a good
- 54:09Speaker 5: stick on the penalty Gil very underrated, very smart in
- 54:12Speaker 5: when he attacks, and I mean he's got such a
- 54:15Speaker 5: deceiving shot. Mike Johnson talked about it. It's it's not
- 54:17Speaker 5: the hardest shot, but he just picks his spot and
- 54:20Speaker 5: he's very accurate with it. And yeah, I've met him
- 54:22Speaker 5: a couple of times. A great guy too. Almost bought
- 54:24Speaker 5: my house in Florida. Really, Yeah, I didn't pay enough
- 54:27Speaker 5: money though, so didn't get it. He tried a low
- 54:29Speaker 5: boy a little bit, but yeah, I tried to get
- 54:30Speaker 5: me a little It's okay, Hey, it's art of the deal.
- 54:32Speaker 1: Yep runner out for the selfie as we finish up
- 54:35Speaker 1: here on NHL Unscripted. Honestly, this has been a ton
- 54:38Speaker 1: of fun here. We still have more episodes to come,
- 54:40Speaker 1: not many. We're gonna have one with our buddy Sam Cosantino.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Sam's gonna break down the draft use of course the
- 54:46Speaker 1: draft experts. Unbelievable job on sports and NHL network. And
- 54:49Speaker 1: we do also have to mention fortal live Wire out
- 54:51Speaker 1: now from iHeart podcast. We started with that, we closed
- 54:54Speaker 1: with that one more goodwill hunting story.
- 54:57Speaker 5: Another live Wire is isn't that a song from Motley Crue?
- 55:02Speaker 3: Like a Motley Crue hung live Wire?
- 55:03Speaker 2: I remember live Wire? Was that music sharing thing everyone.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Used to do.
- 55:06Speaker 5: Yeah, an hour off the rails? Well, look up, I
- 55:09Speaker 5: remember loub I remember Lubewire. Was this ky jelly? Any continue?
- 55:16Speaker 2: So the Seemen Robin says, he talks me his wife
- 55:18Speaker 2: used to fart.
- 55:19Speaker 1: Yes, that's an ad lib. The asyncrasies right, and then
- 55:22Speaker 1: you see Damon start laughing. So watching it, I was like,
- 55:25Speaker 1: Damon's laughing really hard, and so they both start losing it.
- 55:28Speaker 1: So what happened is probably they started ad libbing, and
- 55:30Speaker 1: sure enough, Robin goes in this whole rip about how
- 55:32Speaker 1: oh she'd fart so much something that would.
- 55:33Speaker 2: Lay a match?
- 55:34Speaker 1: And then Damon said, is that how she died? Because
- 55:37Speaker 1: you lit a match? Her fart was so explosive? So
- 55:39Speaker 1: Fancy used their cutaways because they're just losing their minds.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Laughing starts if you watch it, like it's funny, but
- 55:43Speaker 1: they're laughing really hard. And the reason why is they
- 55:46Speaker 1: did like twenty minutes of ada libbic, which is just
- 55:48Speaker 1: ridiculous fart jokes, which didn't end up making the movie.
- 55:50Speaker 1: But that's part of the genius of being a good director.
- 55:52Speaker 3: That's just so good.
- 55:53Speaker 5: Yeah, just like tal Edward Scissorhands snap.
- 55:57Speaker 2: A last thought for eight Mini Driver. I mean, I
- 56:01Speaker 2: kind of liked her.
- 56:02Speaker 3: She's she's kind of she's got she's got something for me.
- 56:05Speaker 3: She's always got some for me. That could be it
- 56:07Speaker 3: the big mouth.
- 56:08Speaker 1: I like it, like he dumped on Oprah. It was unbelievable.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Many driver thought this, I've got Matt Damian, No, I.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Know they were dating.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he broke her heart? Man. How do you
- 56:18Speaker 2: like them apples?
- 56:19Speaker 5: Matt Damon? How do you like them apples? What is
- 56:22Speaker 5: Matt David's personal life? Is he married?
- 56:23Speaker 2: He's married, He's got three kids. His wife Brazilian woman.
- 56:28Speaker 2: I don't know the name of here.
- 56:29Speaker 3: She's all done, ye know he he doesn't speak English.
- 56:32Speaker 3: Definitely a tractor.
- 56:33Speaker 1: It's interesting counterpoint to Ben because Affleck is as everyone
- 56:36Speaker 1: knows is personal life is always in the papers alcohol,
- 56:40Speaker 1: whereas Damon like, I'm just married guy doing this thing.
- 56:43Speaker 5: If only his married life was like the movie The
- 56:45Speaker 5: Accountant and organized, all would be better.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I know that note.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Thanks so much for checking on scriptedhlng script We're taken
- 56:53Speaker 1: next week off oh Sam a cause for concern. Sam
- 56:57Speaker 1: Cosy will join us for a draft recap. Yes, get
