- 0:06klaus fuchs left germany in 1933 as a young physicist
- 0:14and a committed communist one step ahead of the
- 0:17nazi regime that had already marked him for arrest
- 0:21britain took him in By the outbreak of the Second
- 0:24World War, he had built a career as a gifted
- 0:27theoretical physicist and had even been naturalized
- 0:31as a British subject, despite a brief internment
- 0:34as an enemy alien in the war's early, suspicious
- 0:37months. His talent brought him into Britain's
- 0:43own atomic weapons research, the program known
- 0:46by the deliberately dull cover name Tube Alloys.
- 0:51In 1944, as Britain and the United States merged
- 0:55their nuclear efforts, Fuchs was sent to Los
- 0:58Alamos, New Mexico, the heart of the Manhattan
- 1:01Project, where the first atomic bombs were being
- 1:04designed. Act II, what he handed over. At Los
- 1:14Alamos, Fuchs worked on the implosion design.
- 1:17the method used to compress a plutonium core
- 1:20with precisely timed conventional explosives
- 1:23until it went critical the harder and more elegant
- 1:27of the two bomb designs built during the war
- 1:29it gave him access to some of the most sensitive
- 1:32engineering details in the entire project Beginning
- 1:39in 1943 and continuing through 1949, Fuchs passed
- 1:44detailed information to Soviet intelligence contacts,
- 1:48first in Britain and then through contacts in
- 1:52the United States. His own explanation was not
- 1:55money or blackmail. He believed, with the same
- 1:58conviction that had made him a communist as a
- 2:01young man fleeing fascism, that no single nation
- 2:04should hold a monopoly on knowledge capable of
- 2:08ending the war or starting the next one. Fuchs
- 2:19was identified through the Venona program, a
- 2:23long -running American and British effort to
- 2:26decrypt intercepted Soviet intelligence cables.
- 2:29many of which have been considered unbreakable
- 2:32when first sent. Painstaking work through the
- 2:35late 1940s gradually recovered fragments of messages
- 2:39describing a physicist's source at Los Alamos,
- 2:43and by 1949 investigators had narrowed the search
- 2:47enough to name Fuchs directly. Confronted by
- 2:53British intelligence in January 1950. Fuchs confessed
- 2:57fully and specifically, providing detail that
- 3:01helped investigators pursue other members of
- 3:04the network around him, including the courier
- 3:07who had carried his information onward. He was
- 3:10convicted under the Official Secrets Act and
- 3:13sentenced to 14 years. A lighter sentence than
- 3:16espionage charges in the United States would
- 3:19likely have carried, since Britain and the Soviet
- 3:22Union had been wartime allies for much of the
- 3:25period in question. Intelligence historians consider
- 3:37Fuchs one of the most consequential spies of
- 3:40the entire Cold War. not for the volume of what
- 3:43he passed, but for its precision. The Soviet
- 3:46Union tested its first atomic bomb in August
- 3:501949, years ahead of what most Western analysts
- 3:54had expected, and Fuchs's detailed implosion
- 3:57design information is widely credited with shortening
- 4:01that timeline substantially, changing the balance
- 4:04of the earliest years of the nuclear age. Fuchs
- 4:10served nine years of his sentence and was released
- 4:14in 1959. Stripped of his British citizenship,
- 4:18he moved immediately to East Germany, where he
- 4:21was welcomed as a returning hero of the socialist
- 4:24cause. He resumed a research career at a nuclear
- 4:28institute near Dresden, eventually rising to
- 4:32deputy director and remained there for the rest
- 4:35of his life. He died in 1988. A year before the
- 4:39Berlin Wall fell. Having spent his final decades
- 4:42in the state his information had helped arm.
