Transcript
- 0:00Hi everybody and welcome to another episode of the Elon Musk
- 0:02Podcast where we dissect the complexity of the technology
- 0:05landscape today with a special focus on Meta's newest social
- 0:09media venture, Threads. The application, toted as a
- 0:13Twitter killer, set a record-breaking pace by amassing
- 0:16an oppressive 100 million downloads within just a few days
- 0:20of its US launch on July 5th. Yet it's been a roller coaster
- 0:24of a ride for Threads. Despite its initial success, it
- 0:27quickly stumbled. And started declining in user
- 0:30engagement in a slew of other challenges.
- 0:33Now we delve into what has been an extraordinary week for
- 0:36threads, from regulatory hurdles barring its availability in the
- 0:39European Union to user complaints about the lack of a
- 0:43chronological feed, which together contributed to a sharp
- 0:46downturn in user activity and time spent on the app.
- 0:49And on the flip side, we explore Meta's response and what the
- 0:53future might hold for the ambitious project and after the
- 0:56break. We'll dive deep into the factors
- 0:58that led to threads dramatic rise and fall, and what it
- 1:01signifies for the larger tech ecosystem.
- 1:04So stay tuned and we'll be right back with more after this
- 1:07commercial break. Welcome back, Meta, the tech
- 1:10giant formerly knows in his Facebook has recently seen a
- 1:14sharp downturn engagement on its newest social media platform,
- 1:18Threads. Despite achieving an impressive
- 1:20user base of 100 million within a few days of its launch,
- 1:24according to data provided by NBC News Sensor Tower in Similar
- 1:29Web, the ambitious project, designed as a direct competitor
- 1:33to Twitter, hit the ground running when it launched in the
- 1:35United States on July 5th. Now, within a week of its debut,
- 1:39user engagement had noticeably plummeted.
- 1:42An expert suggests that the botch roll out and met his
- 1:45attempt to repackage a familiar concept.
- 1:48May have inadvertently damaged the app's chances of longterm
- 1:51success. The analytics from Sensor Tower
- 1:54indicated 20% decrease in daily active users between Saturn and
- 1:59the subsequent Tuesday and Wednesday, mere few days apart.
- 2:03And on top of that, the average time spent on the platform
- 2:06halved, going from 20 minutes to about 10 minutes.
- 2:10Now. Similar webs data painted an
- 2:12even starker picture. Recording a 25% drop in daily
- 2:16active users from its peak on July 7th to the following
- 2:20Monday, all average usage time nose dived over 50% from 20
- 2:25minutes to under 8 minutes. Now despite these concerning
- 2:30figures, Meta spokesperson sought to reassure skeptics in
- 2:34an e-mail to Gizmodo expressing the company's excitement over
- 2:38threads initial success stating while it's early days were
- 2:41excited about the initial success of Threads.
- 2:44Which has surpassed our expectations.
- 2:46We launched the app just over a week ago and our focus now is on
- 2:50ensuring stable performance, delivering new features and
- 2:53continuing to improve the experience in the coming months.
- 2:57Now further complicating the platform's debut is the fact
- 2:59that Threads is currently unavailable in the European
- 3:03Union due to regulatory concerns.
- 3:06This has not stopped eager users from attempting to gain access
- 3:09via VPN's, only to encounter difficulties with Notifications
- 3:13content. And profiles not loading
- 3:15correctly and in response Meta has now started blocking EU
- 3:19users from accessing threads via VPN.
- 3:21According to reports from Engadget.
- 3:23Meta stressed that the EU is an important market, but confirmed
- 3:27that extra measures were being taken to restrict users in the
- 3:30region from accessing the platform.
- 3:32Nevertheless, Metas Threads has seen an unprecedented influx of
- 3:36users. The record setting pace of
- 3:38downloads outstripped even the fastest growing apps in history.
- 3:42Leaving platforms such as Chant, GBT, and The Dust.
- 3:45Unfortunately, this initial success was swiftly marred by
- 3:49several hiccups. Primarily, users have reported
- 3:53dissatisfaction with the feed on the app, and despite the
- 3:55convenient feature of porting Instagram followers to Threads,
- 3:58users found their feed cluttered with seemingly random posts from
- 4:02celebrities, brands, and influencers.
- 4:04This apparent lack of control over the feed and the overly
- 4:07complex algorithm. To prioritize the blend of
- 4:10followed and recommended content over a straightforward
- 4:13chronological timeline spurred widespread ridicule across the
- 4:16digital sphere and may have been the catalyst for the sharp drop
- 4:20in user engagement. CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision for
- 4:24threads as an apolitical, friendly place has also come
- 4:27under scrutiny, though, especially since deleting
- 4:30threads necessitates the removal of a user's entire Instagram
- 4:33account, an aspect that has not gone down well with a bunch of
- 4:37users. Furthermore, the lack of a
- 4:39desktop client it launched was another glaring omission that
- 4:42may have contributed to the steep fall in usage time.
- 4:46The introduction of a desktop client potentially bolster the
- 4:49amount of time users spend on threads.
- 4:52Now, despite these setbacks though, there is a hope yet for
- 4:55threads. Recent improvements to the apps
- 4:58algorithm have begun to yield a more personalized and relevant
- 5:02feed for users. Nevertheless, the damage has
- 5:04already been done, the disappointing initial user
- 5:07experience. Might have been enough to deter
- 5:09a significant portion of its user base permanently, and even
- 5:13though Threads has accrued A formidable initial user base,
- 5:16the rushed launch and subsequent lackluster user experience may
- 5:20have critically hampered its potential.
- 5:22An inferior product, regardless of a seemingly friendly user
- 5:25base and attractive design can ill afford to compete with an
- 5:29even dwindling Twitter. It remains to be Seed of Meta's
- 5:33efforts to rectify these issues can pave the way for Threads
- 5:36long term success. Threads has made a formidable
- 5:39entry into the social media landscape, positioning itself as
- 5:42a formidable challenger to Elon Musk's Twitter, which reported
- 5:46approximately 240 million monetizable daily active users
- 5:50as of July. And according to the most recent
- 5:53public filing, prior to Musk's acquisition in 2022, those
- 5:57people were monetized. Now, several data tracking
- 6:00platforms have recorded a decline in Twitter's traffic in
- 6:03recent months. Similar web reported an 11% year
- 6:07over year drop in Twitter traffic on July 6th and 7th of
- 6:112023. Now Arc Invest, a longstanding
- 6:14supporter of Tesla CEO Elon Musk mentioned in a Monday note that
- 6:18Threads could become a powerful competitor to Twitter.
- 6:22The firm pointed not only to the rapid growth of Threads user
- 6:25base, but also it's considerable engagement with the platform
- 6:29reporting approximately 95 million threads, nearly
- 6:32200,000,000 likes. The first day alone now, they
- 6:36said. Leveraging Instagrams,
- 6:37infrastructure and social graphs with a sleek interface and hints
- 6:41of decentralization at a time when Twitter was being
- 6:45criticized for limiting activity to eat out and eliminate bots,
- 6:49can prove to be a smart marketing entry strategy.
- 6:52Now, they also said, while Meta deserves praise for the most
- 6:56successful online platform launch in history.
- 6:59Only time will reveal if Threads will replicate Stories, victory
- 7:03over Snapchat, or suffer Real's fate as a secondary player to
- 7:07TikTok. I want to say thank you so much
