- 0:03Speaker 1: There he is into the World Series, right, Yeah, well,
- 0:08Speaker 1: we have a lot to catch up on. We do
- 0:10Speaker 1: have a lot to catch up on. And also there's
- 0:13Speaker 1: breaking news basically as we're starting here about Tonyo Btello,
- 0:16Speaker 1: which we'll get to in like twenty minutes or so.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We're gonna do World Series first. We've covered that story
- 0:20Speaker 1: a lot, and we'll definitely get Kip's perspective there. Before
- 0:24Speaker 1: we charge Kip, we're gonna talk more. I guess we
- 0:28Speaker 1: could do it within the opening segment. I want to
- 0:31Speaker 1: talk about Boba Schett and how you try and welcome
- 0:35Speaker 1: someone back like that, and then we'll go over the
- 0:38Speaker 1: pitching pairing to start the series for the Dodgers. You
- 0:41Speaker 1: know what, let's just charge and then we'll put Kip
- 0:43Speaker 1: on the hot seat, right charge about all right, so
- 0:50Speaker 1: we know that the Dodgers are rolling out the same
- 0:52Speaker 1: one too to start the World Series, just like the
- 0:55Speaker 1: n I'll see because you know that worked out pretty
- 0:57Speaker 1: well for them to Kip. So it's Blake's Snell in
- 1:01Speaker 1: game one and it's Yamamoto in game two. First off,
- 1:07Speaker 1: your thoughts on what they're rolling out from a starting
- 1:09Speaker 1: rotation perspective and how you would try and crack that
- 1:14Speaker 1: mess it up and not look like the Brewers did. Uh.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, I hope Toronto welcomes Bo Bashad back better than
- 1:22Speaker 2: you guys welcome me back. Just throwing me right into
- 1:24Speaker 2: the fire, just right into the deep end, immediately, hold on.
- 1:28Speaker 3: No, no, no, before we get into the pitching.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I'm gonna ask you the question then, because because I said,
- 1:33Speaker 4: I don't even know if you can welcome Bo back,
- 1:35Speaker 4: not that I don't like Boba shit, But then some
- 1:37Speaker 4: fans on the comments were like, just put him at
- 1:39Speaker 4: second He's never played second base?
- 1:42Speaker 3: How hard is that transition before we even dig into
- 1:44Speaker 3: the pitcher.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Uh, that would be an uncomfortable transition for anybody to
- 1:49Speaker 2: switch positions, especially in that big of a stage. It's easier,
- 1:53Speaker 2: I guess going from just one side of the infield
- 1:55Speaker 2: to the other. I think he's still a good defender
- 1:57Speaker 2: enough to where now he's just given more Timebviously, second
- 2:00Speaker 2: base is going to be the easier position than the
- 2:02Speaker 2: short stop short to throw more time to get the
- 2:04Speaker 2: guy out. So I wouldn't doubt that he could make
- 2:06Speaker 2: the transition, But uh, it's not the ideal situation, and
- 2:10Speaker 2: I do welcome him back, maybe a little bit more
- 2:12Speaker 2: than you do AJ, just because I think, uh, what
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, what do we mean by welcoming back? Like
- 2:19Speaker 2: he's one of the better players. He's in You're already
- 2:21Speaker 2: probably the underdog in this series, and he's an X
- 2:23Speaker 2: factor that can probably give you more on the offensive
- 2:26Speaker 2: side if it clicks right away obviously a big if,
- 2:29Speaker 2: then maybe what you've been getting from those middle infield positions.
- 2:32Speaker 2: So I think you're going for it if you welcome
- 2:35Speaker 2: him back.
- 2:36Speaker 5: I think I.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Think the key here that we've been discussing is George Springer.
- 2:40Speaker 1: A lot of the comments to what we bring up
- 2:43Speaker 1: have to do with the obvious or according to fans,
- 2:46Speaker 1: Springer in the outfield, Barger to third earning Clement to
- 2:50Speaker 1: second KF to the bench, that is definitely their best
- 2:54Speaker 1: offensive setup if you're bringing Bo back. But wait, George
- 2:57Speaker 1: Springer rates as a poor defender. He innings wise, I
- 3:01Speaker 1: added it up. I think it was about forty eight
- 3:03Speaker 1: games worth if you're going you know about his total
- 3:05Speaker 1: innings divided by nine, and most of that was in
- 3:09Speaker 1: right field. And I think a lot of Springer playing
- 3:11Speaker 1: well this year, especially down the stretch, had to do
- 3:13Speaker 1: with him not playing in the outfield. Okay, even with
- 3:17Speaker 1: all of that being said, Kip, I'd still throw him
- 3:19Speaker 1: out there if I'm getting a big offensive boost. But wait,
- 3:23Speaker 1: Springer got clocked in the knee and obviously the biggest
- 3:27Speaker 1: swing in you know, the century here for the Toronto
- 3:31Speaker 1: Blue Jays, But that doesn't mean that he can man
- 3:32Speaker 1: the outfield. Pretty big difference between that and what he
- 3:35Speaker 1: can do at the plate.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Yes, But at the same time, like think about I'm
- 3:40Speaker 2: just going off my own which is now we're coming
- 3:42Speaker 2: up on almost a decade ago. But like we put
- 3:45Speaker 2: Carlos Santana normal first basement out and left field. This
- 3:48Speaker 2: is when alnl and pitchers were still hitting and stuff
- 3:50Speaker 2: like that. So it's like, if it's an offensive boost,
- 3:53Speaker 2: which you're gonna need versus this Dodger team to keep
- 3:56Speaker 2: up with them their run scored, I think he gotta
- 3:58Speaker 2: just throw them out there. And as far as his
- 4:00Speaker 2: knee will be fine, AJ canntestas too.
- 4:03Speaker 5: You'll have enough. It's a World Series.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You're gonna have enough adrenaline and enough doctors on hand,
- 4:07Speaker 2: enough stuff to get you through whatever game you need
- 4:09Speaker 2: to and feel great for the game.
- 4:10Speaker 5: So I'm not really worried about the knee.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Okay, so spring in the outfield, bo Dh, I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 1: there's still a chance that bo plays shortstop, and he.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Know, it's just it's just, you know, Kip.
- 4:21Speaker 4: In twenty sixteen, when Kyle Schwarber came back for the
- 4:23Speaker 4: Cubs and he had missed all year with his you know,
- 4:26Speaker 4: it's a different situation for me because Schwarber was never
- 4:28Speaker 4: really going to play defense. He was only there to hit,
- 4:30Speaker 4: and he'd been getting at bats for a while and
- 4:33Speaker 4: the down in Arizona, and I know it's not the
- 4:35Speaker 4: big leagues, but when he got thrown back in there,
- 4:37Speaker 4: he had been doing it.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Boba Shd has not as far as I know. Maybe
- 4:40Speaker 3: he's getting a bat here and there, like in sim games,
- 4:43Speaker 3: but he's not getting like.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Actual game reps at shortstop. He's not getting game rep
- 4:47Speaker 4: at bats. It's a different thing. It's just hard to
- 4:50Speaker 4: come back for him.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I think if you if you, if you don't start him,
- 4:55Speaker 2: if you don't put him in right away, I don't
- 4:58Speaker 2: see how he should really I'm in at all, I guess,
- 5:01Speaker 2: And I think that's what AJ is trying to say
- 5:02Speaker 2: a little bit unless you have a bats because you're
- 5:05Speaker 2: not just going to give him. He's not going to
- 5:06Speaker 2: be a late pinch hit. You're not going to use
- 5:08Speaker 2: him as a late pinch hit in a big situation
- 5:10Speaker 2: when the guy hasn't seen live pitching or hasn't been
- 5:12Speaker 2: doing that. So if you're not going to use him then,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and if you don't start him at the beginning, then
- 5:16Speaker 2: where is he going to come in? So I think you,
- 5:20Speaker 2: I think you start maybe game one, game two. It's
- 5:22Speaker 2: and listen, you're you're going against an elite pitching staff too.
- 5:25Speaker 2: If these are your first at bats back, good luck.
- 5:27Speaker 2: But it's it's hard, but anything goes and anything can happen.
- 5:30Speaker 5: It's just I.
- 5:31Speaker 2: If you're not getting anything maybe from I KF or
- 5:36Speaker 2: whoever has been there or something, I'm just going off
- 5:38Speaker 2: of what they've been doing. Then it's like you don't
- 5:39Speaker 2: really have much to lose. And you tried it early
- 5:42Speaker 2: and then you can switch later switch the second half.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Yeah, and you got to read you have to you're
- 5:47Speaker 4: down a couple of games. This isn't right, that's what
- 5:51Speaker 4: do you have to lose? You just have this thing
- 5:53Speaker 4: called the World Series to lose.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Kid, Yeah, and I, but I also don't want to
- 5:59Speaker 2: be there if you're down with say you're down three
- 6:00Speaker 2: to zero and then you finally put him in and
- 6:02Speaker 2: he has a big game, and you're like, well, we
- 6:03Speaker 2: should have done this much earlier. So I'd rather know
- 6:06Speaker 2: ahead of time or as early as possible, what we
- 6:08Speaker 2: have in him.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess fair, And I.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Know Barger can play third man. He's played really well infield.
- 6:15Speaker 1: He's had a great I mean that defensive outfield for
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Blue Jays has been really good.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I don't know that I would want to mess with that.
- 6:20Speaker 4: And Jim and az An Ikf in the middle are
- 6:22Speaker 4: really good too. Yeah, as we get the Ikf whenever
- 6:25Speaker 4: they turned the double play, does the.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I don't know what the fly ball percentage is, but
- 6:31Speaker 1: I'm sure it's sky high. I mean, the Dodgers are
- 6:32Speaker 1: a top three home run hitting team, Like you want
- 6:35Speaker 1: the outfield tight. But anyway, let's go over a couple
- 6:38Speaker 1: other notes from the series. Mike Petriello putting out some statistics.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I thought this one was interesting, And Mike's a big
- 6:46Speaker 1: proponent of slug over contact. That's a little precursor here,
- 6:51Speaker 1: but he does do really good research on topics like this,
- 6:54Speaker 1: where he said the Jays offense has the fourth highest
- 6:57Speaker 1: October slugging percentage since nine teen sixty nine. So as
- 7:01Speaker 1: much as they make contact, they are also making very
- 7:05Speaker 1: good contact. It's damage contact. They're going against Dodgers pitching,
- 7:09Speaker 1: which has the second lowest October slug in percentage allowed
- 7:13Speaker 1: since nineteen sixty nine. He said, forget small bombss. This
- 7:16Speaker 1: series is going to come down to whether Toronto bats
- 7:18Speaker 1: keeps slugging versus an elite LA rotation. I mean, that's cool,
- 7:21Speaker 1: that's historical information to point out how good the Dodgers
- 7:26Speaker 1: have been preventing damage and how the Blue Jays starters right,
- 7:30Speaker 1: especially their starters. But I think it's underrated. Like we
- 7:32Speaker 1: look at the Blue Jays like it. They're not just hitting.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I mean they have singles, but there's a lot of
- 7:37Speaker 1: doubles and homers in there too.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah, there are more facing the Dodgers pitching either, right,
- 7:43Speaker 4: So starters the facing.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Snell Yamamoto.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Show, Hey, Glass now they don't give up damage a lot,
- 7:52Speaker 4: and Snow we already talked about dominated them earlier this year.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I mean Glass now dominated them. He didn't get a decision,
- 7:59Speaker 4: but dominated them, y'all. Moto hasn't seen them, so it's
- 8:02Speaker 4: a little different, you know, show he hasn't seen him
- 8:03Speaker 4: in a few years. But it's a different thing. I mean, listen,
- 8:08Speaker 4: we talked about this yesterday. Can the can the Blue
- 8:10Speaker 4: Jays starters match the Dodger starters and to make it
- 8:13Speaker 4: a battle of the bullpen because both bullpens aren't terrific,
- 8:17Speaker 4: And then can the lefties of the dog of the
- 8:20Speaker 4: of the Jays who didn't get to pitch a whole
- 8:22Speaker 4: lot against the Mariners because they're so right hand dominant,
- 8:25Speaker 4: little and flew hardy and if they use lour come
- 8:27Speaker 4: in and the gate show, Hey, Munsey and Freddy, that's
- 8:32Speaker 4: where it's gonna That's kind of the margins you're looking
- 8:34Speaker 4: for if you're the Blue Jays.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I mean, the thing also is, Kip, you need a
- 8:38Speaker 1: starter to be off right, like those guys are amazing.
- 8:42Speaker 1: They're not going to do that every single start. Y'amamoto
- 8:45Speaker 1: had a blit, not the last start to start before
- 8:48Speaker 1: right the Reds.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah, against the Phillies.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Against the Phillies, yeah, yeah, Reds. He had the first
- 8:55Speaker 1: inning issue was more tasker and its fault and then
- 8:58Speaker 1: the Phillies got to him a little bit. So you
- 8:59Speaker 1: need one of those where it's like, eh, command's not
- 9:02Speaker 1: as sharp or he's missing a pitch right now, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: then they capitalize.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Yeah, you need them to be off.
- 9:07Speaker 2: But again, this starting rotation is that good at keeping
- 9:11Speaker 2: down the slug and you kind of have to force
- 9:12Speaker 2: your way to make them off a little bit. You
- 9:14Speaker 2: got to take your singles, you got to create a
- 9:16Speaker 2: little havoc on the bass pass, you got to find listen.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Is this kind of I say this a little bit
- 9:21Speaker 2: about like whether the Yankees have done where they kind
- 9:24Speaker 2: of live and die too much by the home run
- 9:25Speaker 2: ball at times, and you just don't want it all
- 9:27Speaker 2: to come down to whether Vladdy hits a home run
- 9:29Speaker 2: or Springer hits a home run. You got to create
- 9:31Speaker 2: runs in another way and force that pressure. Because if
- 9:34Speaker 2: it's coming down and just home runs, this pitching staff
- 9:36Speaker 2: does such a good job at eliminating that. So they
- 9:40Speaker 2: throw too hard and their stuff's too nasty, So you
- 9:42Speaker 2: really got to find other ways to score sometimes and
- 9:44Speaker 2: not just count on the long ball.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Well, we got a super chat here from Music to
- 9:49Speaker 1: My Ears, Shane Bieber has three pitches which could be
- 9:51Speaker 1: affected against the Dodgers, but not where he places them
- 9:54Speaker 1: curve slider and change ups start low and low seventy
- 9:58Speaker 1: percent of the time, or not swinging at low pitches.
- 10:02Speaker 1: A Dodger fan here commenting on Shane Bieber's game.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Well, that's a long ways away. But yeah, listen, one
- 10:07Speaker 4: thing about the Dodgers. They don't chase a whole lot.
- 10:10Speaker 4: You have to try to get him out on the
- 10:11Speaker 4: strike zone or strike the ball, and they do a
- 10:14Speaker 4: good job eliminating a lot of different pitches. And that's
- 10:18Speaker 4: going to be another thing, Like with even with Gosman,
- 10:20Speaker 4: how will they handle that split that he throws right
- 10:22Speaker 4: Game two? You savage with the split we saw the
- 10:25Speaker 4: Marriers made an adjustment and kind of laid off of that.
- 10:27Speaker 3: They got better as they saw him, especially the second
- 10:29Speaker 3: time he saw him, right.
- 10:31Speaker 4: So can they Can the Dodgers do this for the
- 10:33Speaker 4: first time they see a lot of these Dodgers have
- 10:34Speaker 4: seen Kevin Gosman a lot because he's been around for
- 10:37Speaker 4: so long. So but they Yeah, the Dodgers are really
- 10:39Speaker 4: good at this, and the Blue Jays are blue Jays
- 10:41Speaker 4: are good at it.
- 10:42Speaker 3: The differences between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays.
- 10:44Speaker 4: When the Dodgers do it, it seems like they build
- 10:47Speaker 4: pitch counts up. The Blue Jays do it by swinging
- 10:49Speaker 4: earlier in the count and not getting to two strikes
- 10:51Speaker 4: a lot of times, and that's why their contact rate
- 10:53Speaker 4: is higher.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I think you got to keep with that or don't
- 10:57Speaker 1: let those guys get ahead, right they're going to fill
- 10:59Speaker 1: up the zone, then go for it. And if it
- 11:03Speaker 1: doesn't work out one of the games and a pitch
- 11:05Speaker 1: counts that nothing and the guy deals with the complete game,
- 11:08Speaker 1: oh well, you know, out of the next all and
- 11:10Speaker 1: fall where he wanted it to. It happens.

- 12:27Speaker 1: but it's still cool to get the final numbers on
- 12:30Speaker 1: ALCS Game seven in Canada. Our friend Schi DAVIDI over
- 12:35Speaker 1: at Sportsnet talking about how there was record breaking, record
- 12:39Speaker 1: breaking average of six million viewers. Previous I was five
- 12:43Speaker 1: point one for the twenty fifteen alcs in Game six.
- 12:47Speaker 1: The audience peaked at eight point three million for the
- 12:49Speaker 1: final outs of the ninth, and the pregame and postgame
- 12:52Speaker 1: shows put up a one point nine in the post
- 12:54Speaker 1: of two point eight Canada likes baseball two.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That's just in Canada, right, that's just in Canada. I
- 13:04Speaker 3: Fox numbers.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I don't know if I saw those yet, but I
- 13:07Speaker 1: will say, for as much as you don't get the
- 13:10Speaker 1: ratings here for the sport, so cool to get all
- 13:14Speaker 1: of Canada involved in an event like this. You know. Yeah,
- 13:19Speaker 1: I haven't seen this in the twenty first century, so
- 13:21Speaker 1: I think it's cool.
- 13:22Speaker 5: I actually missed the game, did you? I missed Game seven.
- 13:27Speaker 2: I was at Adam Sandler was at the United Center
- 13:30Speaker 2: here in Chicago, and I had tickets for a while,
- 13:32Speaker 2: so I never put it together. That might line up,
- 13:34Speaker 2: but fun show had a great night, but miss missed
- 13:37Speaker 2: the exciting game.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Hey, Mike Petrello put out this tweet on mookie bets.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I thought this was well done because we don't always
- 13:43Speaker 1: get the context. He said, Game one, A ton will
- 13:45Speaker 1: be made of bets three oh six, three fifty eight
- 13:47Speaker 1: five ten slash line off. Kevin Gosman that was all
- 13:50Speaker 1: bad Baltimore Gossman four twenty nine forty seven seven fourteen
- 13:54Speaker 1: was the slash in thirty nine plate appearances from twenty
- 13:56Speaker 1: fourteen to twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen through now bets is
- 14:00Speaker 1: oh for fourteen against Kevin Gosman. That's a great call.
- 14:04Speaker 1: If we see Kevin Gosman stats pop up, you might
- 14:07Speaker 1: want to text your your Fox buddies. Hey, don't fall
- 14:10Speaker 1: for the.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Don't fall for that Gospels, that banana and the tailpipe trick.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's a good call. That's a completely different
- 14:17Speaker 1: Kevin Gosman.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Back then, it was a different guy. I faced Kevin
- 14:19Speaker 4: Gosman back then. It was a lot different than what
- 14:21Speaker 4: he now.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like I had a when Wade Davis went
- 14:27Speaker 2: from Starter to Closer and they're like, oh, you own
- 14:30Speaker 2: this guy, go get. I was like, I own Starterway
- 14:32Speaker 2: Davis Closerway Davis reversed own.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Right, they become a different beast, I mean different. Yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 1: pictures evolve. I do think that's helpful. Sometimes that does happen,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and we probably get fooled by it where we're like, oh,
- 14:47Speaker 1: he's got great numbers. Sometimes it's real. Sometimes it's not
- 14:50Speaker 1: we could get fooled in the reverse. Were like I
- 14:52Speaker 1: have numbers were okay.
- 14:53Speaker 3: And it doesn't even matter, and sometimes it doesn't matter.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yes, Holop Corner breaking news.
- 14:59Speaker 3: It happened.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Tennessee head coach Tony Vaytello is now going to be
- 15:04Speaker 1: the manager of the San Francisco Giants. Jacob Rudner from
- 15:08Speaker 1: Baseball America talking about how this is a landmark move
- 15:11Speaker 1: and he's the first manager to be hired directly from
- 15:13Speaker 1: the college ranks with no pro experience. Before we dive
- 15:17Speaker 1: into this, I just want to let everyone know Baseball
- 15:19Speaker 1: America Hotchiet we covered this, so you can go over
- 15:21Speaker 1: there later and check out more clips on the topic.
- 15:24Speaker 1: We also did a story with Susan Slusser a YouTube
- 15:28Speaker 1: clip yesterday, and there was another conversation that we had.
- 15:31Speaker 1: But let's keep it going. I'll add one more new
- 15:35Speaker 1: bit of news from Bob Nightingale. He said he's going
- 15:37Speaker 1: to take a pay cut.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Wow.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Three point three mil salary and benefits is what he
- 15:42Speaker 1: was currently making at Tennessee. Bob said, don't forget Bob
- 15:46Speaker 1: Melvin is still on contract for twenty twenty six at
- 15:50Speaker 1: four million dollars. I don't really care. I mean, that's
- 15:52Speaker 1: pretty common where. But he's just pointing out that, at
- 15:54Speaker 1: least according to his sources, Tony Vitelo will make less
- 15:58Speaker 1: per season to start here with San.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Francisco play pro ball.
- 16:02Speaker 1: No, no, he did not.
- 16:03Speaker 3: He has no pro experience at all.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah, like not even like I could like, at least
- 16:07Speaker 4: Murph played a little bit, you know, a Murph coach
- 16:09Speaker 4: for a while, and he went from you know, then
- 16:11Speaker 4: he was a bench coach before you know, he did
- 16:13Speaker 4: a bunch of things in the minor leagues, managed in
- 16:15Speaker 4: the minor leagues and stuff before he got a job.
- 16:17Speaker 4: But to go right from college to the big leagues, man,
- 16:19Speaker 4: I don't know care if you're gonna have talk on this.
- 16:20Speaker 4: I didn't go to college. But you don't have to
- 16:22Speaker 4: run a spring training in college. You can't threaten kids
- 16:25Speaker 4: with today if you don't, if you don't do what
- 16:27Speaker 4: I say, I'll make you transfer and take your scholarship.
- 16:29Speaker 3: There's none of that. You get what you get in college.
- 16:31Speaker 3: You get to pick the players. Man.
- 16:33Speaker 4: You get to say I'm recruiting you, and I'm recruiting you,
- 16:35Speaker 4: and I'm recruiting you. In the big leagues, they just say,
- 16:38Speaker 4: here's your team, go play with them.
- 16:39Speaker 1: And it's short term too. In college, I mean in
- 16:41Speaker 1: the big league sometimes you might have a guy for
- 16:44Speaker 1: ten years. You got to be really careful about how
- 16:46Speaker 1: you manage relationships. All right, So enough from us. Kip
- 16:49Speaker 1: played college ball and you actually played for Pat Murphy,
- 16:53Speaker 1: who did not do this a direct route. Brewers manager
- 16:57Speaker 1: spent plenty of time in the big league bench coach
- 17:00Speaker 1: a whole deal. But anyway, give us the context of
- 17:02Speaker 1: how you think this is going to play out.
- 17:06Speaker 2: I think it's going to play out. It's going to
- 17:07Speaker 2: play out well. But it's because the same way for Murf.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Murph is a players manager. He is someone who gets
- 17:13Speaker 2: the team together. You want to play hard for him.
- 17:16Speaker 2: People guys like playing for Murph. I think that's a
- 17:19Speaker 2: big thing here that I've seen with Matello is it
- 17:22Speaker 2: looks like guys like playing for him. He's going to
- 17:24Speaker 2: have his bumps and bruises on how to run the
- 17:28Speaker 2: big league team compared to a college team. Obviously, but
- 17:31Speaker 2: this kind of strikes me as and I want to
- 17:32Speaker 2: get both yours.
- 17:33Speaker 5: Thoughts on this right back to you.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Is this a he checks the box of players want
- 17:39Speaker 2: to play for him like a murph. But this is
- 17:41Speaker 2: also where a new guy with no grounds or no
- 17:45Speaker 2: pillars to stand on can kind of be just a
- 17:47Speaker 2: yes man for the front office to make the lineups
- 17:49Speaker 2: and all that stuff too.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Well, that's who we don't know. The most fascinating thing
- 17:55Speaker 3: to me is like a.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Little bit to me, And I don't want to discredit
- 17:57Speaker 2: Ptello before he's even started or anything like that, or
- 18:00Speaker 2: saying that he can't make his own moves. But it's
- 18:01Speaker 2: like you see a lot of front offices and kind
- 18:03Speaker 2: of where the old school where the manager makes all
- 18:06Speaker 2: the decisions just isn't isn't around as much.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Well, you go for making all the decisions to making
- 18:13Speaker 4: almost no decisions, right is from a college to a
- 18:16Speaker 4: big league manager. I'm not saying you don't make any decisions,
- 18:18Speaker 4: but they're they're limited.
- 18:20Speaker 2: But it'll still be a players guy that that enjoys
- 18:22Speaker 2: it and looks like he's had success wherever he's gone
- 18:24Speaker 2: and looks like guys would like to play for him.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So when you can check that box, front office sees
- 18:29Speaker 2: that and then they can just do the other stuff
- 18:30Speaker 2: that they want to do.
- 18:32Speaker 5: The hiring makes sense.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Yeah, but that can only take you so far being
- 18:36Speaker 4: being a nice guy. I mean, come on, I played
- 18:38Speaker 4: for you played for nice guys. I played for nice guys,
- 18:40Speaker 4: guys you want to play for. Robin Ventura was the
- 18:42Speaker 4: nicest guy in the world, and you want to play
- 18:44Speaker 4: for him. But he wasn't a great manager like that.
- 18:47Speaker 4: That's to me is you have to have that Joe
- 18:48Speaker 4: Madden people love playing for some people hated playing for
- 18:51Speaker 4: Joe Madden, but he got the most out of people
- 18:53Speaker 4: and he knew how to do that.
- 18:54Speaker 2: This guy, I like having a guy with He has
- 18:57Speaker 2: managerial experience, whether it's is at the college levels, so
- 19:00Speaker 2: you're is gonna have to see the nuances of the
- 19:03Speaker 2: game and how different it is from the big leagues
- 19:04Speaker 2: to the college game. But I do like someone with
- 19:07Speaker 2: managerial experience over maybe say a former player to start
- 19:10Speaker 2: right away.
- 19:11Speaker 4: My two cents, The biggest thing is who's he gonna hire.
- 19:15Speaker 4: Who's he gonna hire as a coach. That's a huge thing.
- 19:18Speaker 4: I've got to have veteran coaches, right He's guys, have
- 19:20Speaker 4: a veteran bench coach, veteran pitching coaches, Guys that have
- 19:24Speaker 4: been around.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Because if he just goes out and says, oh, I'm.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Just gonna bring my Tennessee staff over here, and they're like, hey,
- 19:29Speaker 4: spring training starts next week.
- 19:30Speaker 3: What's the plan.
- 19:32Speaker 4: Oh, well, just scrimmage every day like they do in college.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Like that's not how it works exactly, you know, like
- 19:37Speaker 4: that's where it's gonna be. How do I run a bullpen?
- 19:39Speaker 4: You know, in the big leagues you have twenty six guys.
- 19:41Speaker 4: In college you have well, it used to be like
- 19:42Speaker 4: forty guys. Now it's not a thirty six inning. Yeah,
- 19:46Speaker 4: so many more options. You know, guys only pitch once
- 19:48Speaker 4: a week. Who do I set up here and there?
- 19:50Speaker 4: I'm not I don't have to recruit guy. I don't
- 19:51Speaker 4: know it's gonna It's fascinating to me. This is a
- 19:53Speaker 4: fascinating hire, good or bad, however it works out.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Here's the one thing where I disagree with people that say,
- 20:00Speaker 1: why would he lead there? I mean, he's a coach
- 20:04Speaker 1: slash manager. Just because he's doing this successfully at Tennessee
- 20:08Speaker 1: for years doesn't mean that he doesn't have goals of
- 20:11Speaker 1: being a big league manager and winning a World Series.
- 20:13Speaker 1: How many kids grow up and say I want to
- 20:16Speaker 1: win a World Series versus how many kids grow up
- 20:18Speaker 1: and say I want to win a college World Series.
- 20:20Speaker 1: You always start with World Series. So I don't want
- 20:22Speaker 1: to discount that part, Kip. I mean, is he taking
- 20:25Speaker 1: a pay cut? Maybe probably right according to the report,
- 20:28Speaker 1: but he might have gotten more than three years, so
- 20:31Speaker 1: there's still some security there. And he spent eight seasons
- 20:36Speaker 1: already at Tennessee. He's won there, like you kind of
- 20:39Speaker 1: accomplished it all. You have to deal with more of
- 20:41Speaker 1: the nil crap now, which a lot of college coaches
- 20:44Speaker 1: that have a lot of power get pissed about. So
- 20:46Speaker 1: it makes sense to me. You get to be under
- 20:48Speaker 1: Buster Posey, who is a very different front office exec
- 20:52Speaker 1: from most of the others. And he played and he
- 20:54Speaker 1: has a lot of respect for the college game. He
- 20:56Speaker 1: loved his time at FSU. So to me, it all
- 20:58Speaker 1: adds up. It makes sense. And here's the cherry on
- 21:01Speaker 1: top for me, Ki Tony Vytello is going to be
- 21:05Speaker 1: known forever as the guy that did this, and if
- 21:08Speaker 1: he does this successfully, he will pave the way for
- 21:11Speaker 1: others to do this and will be a pioneer. That's cool.
- 21:14Speaker 1: That's a legacy building moment.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Oh, I don't question at all why he's doing it.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I completely understand his side. I comp it is such
- 21:23Speaker 2: a big jump, and like you said, the personal goals
- 21:25Speaker 2: and aspirations and you want to be a World Series
- 21:28Speaker 2: manager and you want to be a major league manager.
- 21:30Speaker 2: The guy's taking a pay cut to do it. That
- 21:32Speaker 2: is absolutely The goal is to get to the big
- 21:34Speaker 2: leagues in any aspect of the sport. So no, I
- 21:37Speaker 2: don't question why Vitel's doing it. And there will be
- 21:40Speaker 2: the entire rest of the league will be watching how
- 21:42Speaker 2: this plays out to see if it can work or not,
- 21:44Speaker 2: and then that'll open up the floodgates to more college
- 21:47Speaker 2: coaches maybe doing it down the road if this works out.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Let's take you through the arena club slab pack experience.
- 21:55Speaker 1: This is part two because Todd Father last week pulled
- 21:59Speaker 1: a card that he didn't love, yet he sold it
- 22:02Speaker 1: back for actually more than what the slab pack cost.
- 22:05Speaker 1: This time pulls a card that he likes.
- 22:08Speaker 7: Yeah, and this is the best part of it. Ronnie
- 22:10Speaker 7: Mauricio and Me's stand out, you know, rookie sensation. He's
- 22:13Speaker 7: been absolutely phenomenal. I like the itch of seeing what
- 22:16Speaker 7: you're gonna get, you know, I like prospects I don't
- 22:19Speaker 7: love them, but seeing this kind of card is actually
- 22:22Speaker 7: absolutely beautiful thing. I know a couple people around town
- 22:25Speaker 7: that would absolutely love that card. So there's gonna be
- 22:27Speaker 7: a lot of conversations going on here for Arena Club.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And what you do is you have it in your
- 22:30Speaker 1: digital showroom. If you want to hand it out locally,
- 22:33Speaker 1: then cool. You ask Arena Club to send it to
- 22:37Speaker 1: you and they do, or you can sell it back
- 22:38Speaker 1: like you see there instant offer for one hundred and
- 22:40Speaker 1: ninety three bucks. But he's keeping it, And you can
- 22:43Speaker 1: do what Todd father does by going to Arena club
- 22:45Speaker 1: dot com slash foul and getting twenty percent off your
- 22:48Speaker 1: first card purchase or your first slab pack purchase. What
- 22:52Speaker 1: do you think is going to be the toughest thing
- 22:54Speaker 1: for him at the jump? Like Lancelyn's on this show
- 22:58Speaker 1: sometimes and I heard him the other day on the
- 22:59Speaker 1: radio say that the speech in spring training for him
- 23:03Speaker 1: actually matters more than most because it's different and you
- 23:07Speaker 1: just want to hear what he has to say and
- 23:08Speaker 1: just the way that he's perceived right from the jump
- 23:10Speaker 1: in spring training, like, hey, let's give this guy a chance.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He has had a lot of success. Do you think
- 23:15Speaker 1: that you know something in spring training really matters, Like
- 23:18Speaker 1: what's the moment where it's going to be like, Okay,
- 23:20Speaker 1: he's got these guys.
- 23:22Speaker 5: I think he's going to be good at that.
- 23:23Speaker 2: I think it's going to be more comes down to
- 23:25Speaker 2: what AJ was saying, more about running a bullpen, running
- 23:29Speaker 2: an organization, almost a big league team for the first time,
- 23:31Speaker 2: rather than a college team. I think the differences of those,
- 23:34Speaker 2: I think is what it's going to come down to.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I think he'll get the room behind him and with
- 23:39Speaker 2: a good speech, and he'll have the respect of the
- 23:41Speaker 2: guys by it before the season starts. But it'll be
- 23:45Speaker 2: interested to see maybe in that first month, let's say
- 23:47Speaker 2: April comes around, and you see maybe make a couple
- 23:51Speaker 2: wrong moves or put in the wrong guys, or start
- 23:54Speaker 2: different players that aren't supposed to be starting. It's like
- 23:56Speaker 2: that's when you'll start to question it. But going into it,
- 23:59Speaker 2: I think he'll be He'll be fine with getting the
- 24:01Speaker 2: team behind him.
- 24:04Speaker 4: I just I think it starts now. The minute he's hired.
- 24:07Speaker 4: He's gonna start having to reach out to guys. I
- 24:09Speaker 4: feel like he's gonna start reaching out to Logan Web
- 24:12Speaker 4: and Raffie Devers and Williadomas and getting getting them on
- 24:15Speaker 4: his side. You know, I mentioned Robin Ventura before. One
- 24:19Speaker 4: of the things I think where Robin messed up is
- 24:20Speaker 4: my I was there his first year. He didn't call
- 24:22Speaker 4: anybody in the offseason because he's like, oh, I didn't
- 24:23Speaker 4: want to see act people like I was playing favorites
- 24:26Speaker 4: or anything. I'm like, dude, you should have reached out
- 24:28Speaker 4: to me and Canerko and some of the veteran guys
- 24:31Speaker 4: that had been around for a while to like see
- 24:33Speaker 4: what we're thinking and what we like and this and that.
- 24:35Speaker 4: He's like, well, I wanted to go into spring training
- 24:37Speaker 4: with a clean slate, Like no, like go into it
- 24:39Speaker 4: and say, hey, listen, I'm gonna I'm gonna call Raffie Devers.
- 24:42Speaker 4: I'm gonna call Logan web I'm gonna call Willia Damas.
- 24:45Speaker 4: I'm gonna call Matt Chapman, I'm gonna call Patrick Bailey.
- 24:48Speaker 4: I'm gonna call these guys that I know I'm gonna
- 24:51Speaker 4: be counting on and get and get their feelings and
- 24:53Speaker 4: what they what they need from me as a manager,
- 24:55Speaker 4: and then go from there.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You know, the first thing I'm doing if I'm him
- 24:59Speaker 1: once I sign, after I get acclimated with the team
- 25:02Speaker 1: and the organization, flying to the dr and having lunch
- 25:06Speaker 1: with Ruffia.
- 25:07Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying, get to know those guys.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Hey, dude, you're a big guy. I saw what they
- 25:10Speaker 1: did to you in Boston. Not my vibe. I'm a
- 25:13Speaker 1: player's guy. I know what this means. Even though I
- 25:15Speaker 1: didn't play, I think they did it wrong. And play
- 25:18Speaker 1: to what.
- 25:19Speaker 3: He wants, right, That's what I'm saying.
- 25:21Speaker 1: How hard is that team will fly you there and
- 25:23Speaker 1: take them out to lunch.
- 25:24Speaker 2: That'll go a long way with your relationship with your team.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Doing just even a phone call like that.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Absolutely Okay, cool, Well, it'll be exciting, fun storyline to
- 25:34Speaker 1: watch this giant fessturassing. The Giants have become relevant. They
- 25:38Speaker 1: were even this year they were five hundred, but they
- 25:41Speaker 1: are more relevant now. They were kind of stuck in
- 25:44Speaker 1: the mud in my mind for several years after that
- 25:46Speaker 1: twenty twenty one season. It's like, eh, and I think
- 25:49Speaker 1: Buster Posey has made this Is.
- 25:50Speaker 3: This gonna be more of a Bruce Bochie higher or
- 25:52Speaker 3: a Gabe caplor.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Hire you'll find out, or a little bit in between,
- 25:56Speaker 1: but attendance was up big in San Francisco. I give
- 25:59Speaker 1: credit to Buster Posey for bringing in stars that people
- 26:02Speaker 1: actually want to watch and they can buy some jerseys.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Hey render to everyone. The Playmaker's Classic is happening on Tuesday,
- 26:07Speaker 1: February eighteenth, twenty twenty six. Four hundred plus packed the
- 26:13Speaker 1: event last year, including one hundred current Big leaguer's, former pros,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and future stars. This is an opportunity to be close
- 26:19Speaker 1: to those players and also, as Will Benson brought up
- 26:22Speaker 1: the other day and he'll be there, you get to
- 26:25Speaker 1: talk to players about whatever's going on in your world,
- 26:27Speaker 1: including any charity initiatives that you have. So I think
- 26:30Speaker 1: it's a really cool opportunity to, you know, be around
- 26:34Speaker 1: people that want to do good things for the community,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and this event is a really cool way to pull
- 26:40Speaker 1: that off. Kip, you know Arizona quite well. It's also
- 26:44Speaker 1: a good time down there in downtown.
- 26:46Speaker 5: Some good golf, perfect golf weather around that time too.
- 26:49Speaker 1: M h. Spring training obviously, so you can go to
- 26:52Speaker 1: camps right around. It's like right before when games start
- 26:55Speaker 1: and players are it's like the perfect time. Yeah, you
- 26:59Speaker 1: get good access there because the players aren't even playing games.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yet they kind of do their thing and then they're
- 27:03Speaker 1: excited to be there, so they'll go. You know, they'll
- 27:06Speaker 1: be like the roped off areas and they'll spend time there,
- 27:08Speaker 1: especially appreciating that people are there before the game starts. Anyway,
- 27:12Speaker 1: if you want to check all of that out, go
- 27:13Speaker 1: for it. Playmakers Classic. We'll talk more about it as
- 27:16Speaker 1: we move along here in the off season, and we'll
- 27:18Speaker 1: bring on other players that will be in attendance. Playmakers Classic,
- 27:24Speaker 1: More Information Players Trust dot Org. Let's move on here
- 27:29Speaker 1: while we have a minute. What did I see here?
- 27:32Speaker 1: A little note on Bolpi, the most talked about ady
- 27:36Speaker 1: ops plus of all time. Chris Kershner with the tweet,
- 27:40Speaker 1: spoke with an orthopedic surgeon about a surgery. Big takeaways
- 27:42Speaker 1: that would happen immediately after the quarter zone injections probably
- 27:45Speaker 1: indicates how much his shoulder affected his season. That that also
- 27:48Speaker 1: means excuses are now over. I disagree. Which has been
- 27:52Speaker 1: the same player for three years. It is the same
- 27:54Speaker 1: player for three years, Kip. He's also now going to
- 27:57Speaker 1: be coming off shoulder surgery, which is actually always almost
- 28:00Speaker 1: always an issue for players often coming off shoulder surgery
- 28:03Speaker 1: as a bat is usually an issue, And where the
- 28:06Speaker 1: hell were the Yankees on this not realizing that his
- 28:08Speaker 1: shoulders messed up and it was causing a problem. Like,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I don't know. This whole story is trash to me,
- 28:14Speaker 1: and if I'm a Yankee fan, yeah, I want to
- 28:16Speaker 1: move on.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Do I think it affected him?
- 28:19Speaker 2: Yes, But I think if you're good enough to play,
- 28:21Speaker 2: that means you're good enough to hit BP, hitting the cage,
- 28:24Speaker 2: work on your craft, and you find what works for
- 28:26Speaker 2: you that day. So I think this struggle was more
- 28:28Speaker 2: than just a soldier shoulder surgery explanation.
- 28:31Speaker 5: So, like you said, it's been going on for a while.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Kip eighty one, eighty six and eighty three. That's
- 28:38Speaker 4: his ops plus his first three years in the big leagues.
- 28:41Speaker 2: He just yeah, I mean we saw how good he
- 28:43Speaker 2: can be when he plays well. Obviously, anybody it's a
- 28:45Speaker 2: no brainer comment, But I just yeah, No, it's there's
- 28:48Speaker 2: enough stats now behind it where something's off or something.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Or he's an eighty or ops plus guy the.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Guy, Hey, we have a tweet on World Series ticket pricing.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Joe Pompliano does a lot of sports bids. He's been
- 29:05Speaker 1: on this show. He said, World Series tickets are currently
- 29:07Speaker 1: more expensive in Toronto than in LA. Current get in
- 29:10Speaker 1: prices Game one eight to seventy five, Game two nine
- 29:13Speaker 1: sixty three. Get in prices doesn't necessarily tell you the
- 29:16Speaker 1: whole story, of course, but if you want to just
- 29:19Speaker 1: get into the building, this is what it looks like.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Game three seven eighty eight, Game four seven fifty, Game
- 29:25Speaker 1: five seven eighty seven. Those are the three in LA.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Then back to Toronto, You're you're looking at close to
- 29:29Speaker 1: a grand just to get into the building for what
- 29:32Speaker 1: I'm assuming is standing room only.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I know a guy that can get us in.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Kevin Pilar, Kevin Polar walk in Superman poss that's right.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Say I have five of my foul territory.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Fronts, I have five of my Justice leaguers. Let us in.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Random, But I heard the previous Superman that just came
- 29:51Speaker 1: out like gets he gets like beat up the whole time.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Yeah, but he's Superman. How can anybody beat up?
- 29:59Speaker 1: So I haven't seen Polar should take over. I'll send
- 30:01Speaker 1: you something that was really funny on it. Anyway, this
- 30:04Speaker 1: makes sense, right, Toronto hasn't seen this. I mean you
- 30:07Speaker 1: played for a team that hadn't experienced this, so you
- 30:11Speaker 1: can speak to what this is like. The Blue Jays
- 30:13Speaker 1: haven't won since ninety three. The Guardians have never won,
- 30:17Speaker 1: slash Indians or not since what.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I played for a team that didn't win for eighty
- 30:23Speaker 3: eight years.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Dude, I forgot about you, you're O.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I forgot about me. Sorry, Kip, I mean you're like
- 30:28Speaker 3: in the.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Favorite Cleveland didn't win. I mean you guys won.
- 30:31Speaker 4: Yeah, it had been eighty eight years, longer than the
- 30:33Speaker 4: Red Sox. But kIPS on that track with the Guardians
- 30:35Speaker 4: right now.
- 30:37Speaker 5: Anyways, World Series prices are.
- 30:42Speaker 4: What was the year for Cleveland forty seven forty A
- 30:46Speaker 4: forty seven, Kip.
- 30:48Speaker 5: Eight forty eight, forty eight.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Forty eight, I was way off last title in forty
- 30:57Speaker 1: eight seventy seven seasons.
- 31:00Speaker 4: They're chasing down them Bear up there, they're chasing down
- 31:03Speaker 4: them Covey Bears.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Wow.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Maybe if they change back to the Cleveland Spiders they
- 31:08Speaker 3: would win.
- 31:09Speaker 5: I actually did like the Cleveland Spiders.
- 31:12Speaker 3: Should they still should have gone for the Steamers. I'm
- 31:14Speaker 3: just saying.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Guardians business train. There's last on my list.
- 31:19Speaker 5: What I don't like off topic, guys.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Sorry, but in the breaks in the commercial breaks. We're
- 31:25Speaker 1: allowed to do this.
- 31:26Speaker 3: This is a commercial. We just we just fuck around
- 31:29Speaker 3: the Cleveland Steamers.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Because of the boats in the in the in the
- 31:33Speaker 4: train that runs through there.
- 31:34Speaker 3: It should have been.

- 32:42Speaker 1: bring this up from you know, sorry, right from the jump, here.
- 32:46Speaker 1: I know for the production team mind scenes, if you
- 32:48Speaker 1: can bring up that tweet from you know, I'm curious
- 32:52Speaker 1: to get the player perspective here and to push it forward.
- 32:56Speaker 1: So he wrote about how the Mariners had twenty five
- 32:58Speaker 1: instances where a reliever was seeing a hitter for the
- 33:00Speaker 1: third time in a series, including when Bizardo saw George
- 33:06Speaker 1: Springer for the third time in the ALCS. He said,
- 33:11Speaker 1: the Dodgers have had one. Now, I think there's important
- 33:15Speaker 1: context here. The Dodgers don't have to use their relievers
- 33:18Speaker 1: as much in the playoffs because their starters goes.
- 33:21Speaker 3: And they've won every series very easily.
- 33:23Speaker 1: There's that, But regardless, I do want to get your take,
- 33:27Speaker 1: like you're seeing the same reliever over and over again.
- 33:31Speaker 1: How much of a factor is that? And clearly there
- 33:33Speaker 1: are front offices that should be game planning. Hey, this
- 33:38Speaker 1: hitter has seen this picture this many times. Eventually it's
- 33:41Speaker 1: going to click. So let's try to avoid that, right, Yes, okay,
- 33:46Speaker 1: no matter who it.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Is, I mean, you should do this in the in
- 33:49Speaker 3: the regular season. Kid Kip knows this.
- 33:51Speaker 4: When you played teams nineteen times, you get the same
- 33:53Speaker 4: lefty ten times in a year and you're like, Okay,
- 33:55Speaker 4: I bet you I'm.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Gonna figure out how to get some kind of hit
- 33:58Speaker 3: off this guy. Do something off this guy.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You know, I used to call Mets spring training games
- 34:03Speaker 1: for U S and Y, and I remember multiple times
- 34:05Speaker 1: we thought that there was going to be one starter
- 34:07Speaker 1: and then they were like, nope, Mets are playing the
- 34:09Speaker 1: Phillies today. They're having him pitch in the B game
- 34:12Speaker 1: or in the back or whatever because they just don't
- 34:14Speaker 1: want him to see them and what he looks like
- 34:16Speaker 1: in spring training coming up.
- 34:18Speaker 2: So it's all it's all just more information for the hitter.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Think about like a long at bat. He's getting more
- 34:23Speaker 2: and more information every pitch. Now, just multiply that when
- 34:26Speaker 2: he has more and more at bats versus the guy
- 34:29Speaker 2: then and if he's like ag said, if he's tried
- 34:31Speaker 2: new things, if he tried ambushing this time, if he
- 34:34Speaker 2: tried sitting curveball on the left on left this time,
- 34:36Speaker 2: he's just he's gathering information and data, and he's if
- 34:41Speaker 2: you don't want it to be in the playoffs, if
- 34:43Speaker 2: you're the pitcher where here's a hitter, he might might
- 34:46Speaker 2: have finally found the answer to how to get a
- 34:47Speaker 2: hit off you, And that's where Aja is saying, it's
- 34:49Speaker 2: just there's sometimes it's just time where he's due, He's
- 34:51Speaker 2: he tried everything else.
- 34:55Speaker 5: You don't want to give a hit or too much information.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Okay, So how do we spin this forward to you
- 35:00Speaker 1: the World Series? Like? Is there anything you should keep
- 35:02Speaker 1: in mind? My big thing on the Blue Jay side
- 35:05Speaker 1: is to use that variety. I don't think that there's
- 35:08Speaker 1: a clear cut circle of trust for John Schneider. So
- 35:11Speaker 1: I know I pushed this the other day with you,
- 35:13Speaker 1: but I'm like, let me see a little Kevin Gossman
- 35:16Speaker 1: out of the bullpen on his throat. Ay, let me
- 35:18Speaker 1: see Bassett a little bit more frequently, Like, let's just
- 35:20Speaker 1: keep throwing different things at the Dodgers. I don't want
- 35:24Speaker 1: the same game plan middle innings every time from Toronto.
- 35:28Speaker 1: You know, every day Louis Varland is going to give
- 35:31Speaker 1: up some dingers. If he's pitching every game in an
- 35:33Speaker 1: extended series like this, that's been the case. It's a trend.
- 35:36Speaker 4: I hate to bring this up for Kip, but like
- 35:38Speaker 4: Andrew Miller in twenty sixteen, he already mentioned it like
- 35:40Speaker 4: they I mean, Francona wore him out even a rolled
- 35:43Speaker 4: as Chatman got worn out until and when Raja hit.
- 35:46Speaker 3: The home run.
- 35:46Speaker 4: He was worn out because he don't if they're pitch
- 35:49Speaker 4: him every game in multiple innings. It was like, dude,
- 35:51Speaker 4: at some point, you gotta give these guys a break.
- 35:53Speaker 5: It affected both. It affected both.
- 35:55Speaker 2: H Miller shouldn't have thrown in game five and Chapman
- 36:01Speaker 2: shouldn't have thrown in Game six. I think we were
- 36:06Speaker 2: a static that we came back enough to get Chapman
- 36:08Speaker 2: into the game, even though we still ended up losing
- 36:10Speaker 2: six and seven, but we got him into the game
- 36:12Speaker 2: on six, and we felt like that was a win
- 36:14Speaker 2: in and of itself right there, because he was gonna
- 36:16Speaker 2: be more tired. More guys would have seen him then.
- 36:19Speaker 2: So there are those little things where you just and
- 36:22Speaker 2: you got to have the two different pitchers. You got
- 36:23Speaker 2: to have one who can get you an out and
- 36:25Speaker 2: one when.
- 36:25Speaker 5: You need a strikeout. So are there are different ones
- 36:28Speaker 5: there too?
- 36:30Speaker 1: You know who I just thought of. We might have
- 36:31Speaker 1: brought him up once a while back on the show.
- 36:34Speaker 1: But remember Brandon Morow for the Dodgers.
- 36:38Speaker 3: There's a blue jac Yeah, but he pitched for the Dodgers.
- 36:41Speaker 1: He was a blue Jay. At one point. But he
- 36:43Speaker 1: pitched for the Dodgers in what was it the twenty
- 36:45Speaker 1: seventeen World Series I believe, right, never came back. Yeah
- 36:51Speaker 1: against the Astros. Right, well, then yeah, he got ended
- 36:54Speaker 1: up getting hurt. And he did say afterward that you know,
- 36:58Speaker 1: he was also feeling it a little. I mean, they were,
- 37:01Speaker 1: they were going to him every game, and then he
- 37:03Speaker 1: wasn't feeling like he had this stuff for one of
- 37:05Speaker 1: those games.
- 37:06Speaker 3: That's what Matt Brash looked like for the Blue Jays
- 37:08Speaker 3: at the end.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I'm running out of gas, I.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Mean for the Mariners. Yeah, that's why he didn't pitched
- 37:10Speaker 3: instead of bizarre.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Though, they pitched him the day before.
- 37:14Speaker 4: What I'm saying, but he looked tired, right, some of
- 37:17Speaker 4: these guys get tired. Man, you pitch, they don't pitch
- 37:20Speaker 4: as much. If you talk to a manager and keep
- 37:22Speaker 4: you knows we talk to your managers, I'd be like, oh,
- 37:25Speaker 4: he's thrown.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Three out of four.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Definitely giving him the day off when the playoffs are
- 37:29Speaker 4: like okay, well you can give me one day. You
- 37:31Speaker 4: can go four out of five. Men, he pitched in
- 37:33Speaker 4: four out of five days regular season, they just were like, hey,
- 37:38Speaker 4: don't even take spikes. Today, we're not you're not we'll
- 37:41Speaker 4: give up this game. You're down to Yeah, you're down.
- 37:43Speaker 3: But in the playoffs and then they have to try
- 37:45Speaker 3: to get it up, that's.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Where it's the most important. Uh, the managerially use of
- 37:50Speaker 2: a bullpen comes into play. The biggest is the playoffs
- 37:53Speaker 2: and especially the World Series. Now you can get away
- 37:55Speaker 2: with stuff during the regular season, you guys down because
- 37:59Speaker 2: no and no, nobody's going to say no, No pitcher
- 38:02Speaker 2: is going to be like I'm hanging today in the postseason.
- 38:04Speaker 2: So you're always going to have use of everyone. But
- 38:07Speaker 2: it just comes down to how the manager works the bullpen,
- 38:10Speaker 2: which Stringsy pulls.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Mara pitching fourteen out of the Dodgers fifteen playoff games
- 38:14Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen. That was his sanity, the trash Can Astros.
- 38:19Speaker 1: But yeah, it was five.
- 38:20Speaker 3: He was hurt before that.
- 38:22Speaker 1: He was hurt before, I mean the history of his
- 38:24Speaker 1: whole career. And then yeah, that was his moment. In
- 38:27Speaker 1: the beginning of the playoffs, he was money for them,
- 38:29Speaker 1: and I think he started to wear down of course,
- 38:30Speaker 1: and then also, I mean World Series twenty seventeen. There's
- 38:33Speaker 1: there's a lot to it. There. I mean the game
- 38:36Speaker 1: five that he pitched in where he gave up like
- 38:37Speaker 1: four or five runs. That game was thirteen twelve exactly
- 38:45Speaker 1: twenty five runs in that camp. I remember watching. I
- 38:47Speaker 1: was like, is this going to be how baseball is now?
- 38:51Speaker 1: But anyway, I just wanted to go over the thought
- 38:53Speaker 1: exercise with you guys on how to play this out.
- 38:58Speaker 1: The Dodgers definitely seemed to have the easier decision making
- 39:02Speaker 1: for Dave Roberts. As long as they continue this, it'll
- 39:04Speaker 1: be interesting because we haven't really seen this, Kip. What
- 39:07Speaker 1: if a starter for the Dodgers does have a bad
- 39:09Speaker 1: day and you have to script the rest of the
- 39:12Speaker 1: game or play it out with your believers. So let's
- 39:15Speaker 1: say a dude doesn't make it past the second inning
- 39:18Speaker 1: and you got to fill a lot of time cursh off.
- 39:21Speaker 3: And to cover some in.
- 39:26Speaker 2: They are they are set up so perfectly for so
- 39:28Speaker 2: many things with just how good their staff is. It
- 39:31Speaker 2: can handle so many different ways of they're rested, they go,
- 39:35Speaker 2: the starters go long, so yeah, and then they have
- 39:38Speaker 2: guys in their bullpen who are starters and are stretched
- 39:41Speaker 2: out as well too, so they really are capable of
- 39:43Speaker 2: handling almost each situation, and like if if the starter,
- 39:48Speaker 2: let's say game one or two only goes too innings,
- 39:50Speaker 2: they're out of the game. Now you bullpen it or
- 39:52Speaker 2: you go Kershaw Like you're saying you still have Yamamoto
- 39:56Speaker 2: and show, Hey, guys who are willing, who are able
- 39:58Speaker 2: to go six, seven.
- 39:59Speaker 5: Eight, nine innings themselves.
- 40:01Speaker 2: So that's the luxury of these guys who are just
- 40:03Speaker 2: dominating get late in the games all the time.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Anyways, it's funny if you're in Toronto, you're like, guys,
- 40:08Speaker 1: let's let's get one of these starters knocked out so
- 40:11Speaker 1: we get Kershaw. Just sounds funny, he did. I mean
- 40:16Speaker 1: he always puts up good run prevention numbers, no matter
- 40:18Speaker 1: what the stuff.
- 40:19Speaker 5: Looks like, and that it used to be not got
- 40:22Speaker 5: the starter to get to the bullpen.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Well here's here's a Hall of Famer waiting for you.
- 40:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Good, but stuff wise, I mean, you'd much rather face
- 40:32Speaker 1: Clayton Kershaw than a good day for Blake Snell, Tyler Glass,
- 40:37Speaker 1: now Yamamoto or Otani.
- 40:39Speaker 5: True, True, I'm just disappointed.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Show he's only if this game, if it goes seven,
- 40:43Speaker 3: it only get to pitch a once.
- 40:44Speaker 1: No twice, he'll come out of the bullpen in Game seven.
- 40:48Speaker 3: Do you think his dream give up, give up the
- 40:50Speaker 3: DH his dream to.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Do exactly what he did in the World Baseball.
- 40:54Speaker 3: Class, It's got to be Kershaw for me.
- 40:56Speaker 1: I actually think Shotani, as robotic as he is, has
- 41:00Speaker 1: one dream right Game seven, World Series, tight game and
- 41:06Speaker 1: he closes it out. I actually think that's the thing
- 41:09Speaker 1: for him.
- 41:09Speaker 3: He's talked to the team about on it.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Well, I like, push, are we getting to a Game
- 41:15Speaker 1: seven too soon?
- 41:16Speaker 3: Sorry?
- 41:17Speaker 1: I want to bet on it. That's that was I
- 41:19Speaker 1: did miss that. Uh, but that's what he wants. Okay, Wait,
- 41:23Speaker 1: you think Kershaw is going to close it out.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I'm saying, an ideal world, if we had Andy McColl
- 41:28Speaker 4: on the other day, if they have a lead and
- 41:31Speaker 4: a big enough lead, and it's a clinching game, Kershaw's
- 41:34Speaker 4: last game and you bring you bring him in.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's got to be.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Like yeah, I understand, but I'm saying five six runs,
- 41:42Speaker 4: you say, kursh go close this thing out and let
- 41:45Speaker 4: him do it.
- 41:45Speaker 3: I think that would be the storybook ending. He deserves
- 41:48Speaker 3: six plus. Okay, fine, They're up ten to two in
- 41:52Speaker 3: the ninth kursh finish this thing.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's weird to say, like the storybook Eddy that
- 41:57Speaker 2: he deserves. Like guys had an amazing career, he also
- 42:02Speaker 2: deserves the storybook I need as well.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Yes, some people get it all. Some people get it all, Kip.
- 42:08Speaker 5: Okay, it would be so cool, you really would.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I mean, listen, curseh is already. There's one thing Kersh
- 42:13Speaker 4: has missed in his career that he didn't get. He
- 42:16Speaker 4: didn't get the tyler Glass now body. Okay, but he
- 42:19Speaker 4: got the Hall of Fame career, he got the money,
- 42:22Speaker 4: he got everything else, but he doesn't have the tyler
- 42:25Speaker 4: Glass now body.
- 42:26Speaker 3: No, he's a proud dad body, I know.
- 42:28Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. So you can't really get it all.
- 42:31Speaker 4: He got most of it. He just missed that one
- 42:33Speaker 4: little thing.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Yeah, but he is inspirational, as are many baseball players.
- 42:37Speaker 1: You don't have to have a tyler Glass now body
- 42:40Speaker 1: to make it to the big leagues.
- 42:41Speaker 5: I agree.
- 42:41Speaker 1: That's rowdy, right, there's a lot of guys where you
- 42:44Speaker 1: look and you're like, Okay, he's.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Just firing from the hip today.
- 42:51Speaker 3: It's been a long week, Kip. You missed you missed
- 42:53Speaker 3: a lot.
- 42:53Speaker 1: To seek apparently welcome to foul thereto.
- 42:57Speaker 3: It's been a lot of It's been a rough week
- 42:58Speaker 3: on the Twitter for me.
- 42:59Speaker 4: I've been getting people have really hurt my feelings that
- 43:01Speaker 4: they're mean words they've said to me.
- 43:04Speaker 5: I have to take a part.
- 43:06Speaker 1: If you think about the context. I mean, it's fans
- 43:09Speaker 1: just talking rubbish, yes, strategy stuff like whatever. You know.
- 43:14Speaker 1: I got a fan going, oh, I mean, did you
- 43:17Speaker 1: forget George Springer play the outfield? No, you're watching a
- 43:20Speaker 1: thirty second clip on Twitter and we talked about that
- 43:22Speaker 1: for five minutes of it and his knee. But thanks
- 43:25Speaker 1: for chiming in. Hey, it's FT presented by the new
- 43:30Speaker 1: Fox one app. We have some news coming in about
- 43:34Speaker 1: the Braves manager spot, which I think is the best
- 43:38Speaker 1: job available out of the whatever. The number is still
- 43:41Speaker 1: a large number of openings. Scott Coleman, part of our
- 43:45Speaker 1: Hammer Territory crew, said Mark Bowman's reporting, it seems the
- 43:50Speaker 1: Braves are down to three candidates. Clubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty,
- 43:53Speaker 1: Downders bench coach Danny Lahman. Who's the third Somebody send
- 43:58Speaker 1: me who the third one is on there? Cut But
- 44:03Speaker 1: Mark Bowman also wrote a quote tweet on that and
- 44:06Speaker 1: said he confidently, Oh here's the third one, George Lombard,
- 44:10Speaker 1: Tiger's bench coach. But he said he confidently removed David Ross,
- 44:14Speaker 1: Mark de Rosa, and John Gibbons from the list. I
- 44:19Speaker 1: remember when I worked with DeRosa at MLB, that was
- 44:23Speaker 1: like what he was waiting for at one point. That was,
- 44:26Speaker 1: but that was a while ago. This was when Snicker
- 44:29Speaker 1: took over and then ends up staying there for a
- 44:31Speaker 1: long period of time. And I don't think. I don't
- 44:34Speaker 1: know what the deal is. Maybe he's waiting till his
- 44:35Speaker 1: kids are out.
- 44:36Speaker 3: Too good of a gig right now.
- 44:38Speaker 1: It's a good gig. And also I.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Paid a lot of money from MLB to talk really
- 44:42Speaker 3: well about MLB on MLB Central, right.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a big.
- 44:46Speaker 3: He gets to go around with Rob Manford and hang
- 44:49Speaker 3: out and play golf.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It's a good gig.
- 44:51Speaker 4: It's a lot because the Dratetage team USA every year
- 44:53Speaker 4: every few years.
- 44:55Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean he's got a pretty good gig
- 44:58Speaker 3: right now.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Yeah. At some point, when you know, the the channel
- 45:02Speaker 1: keeps changing like it does, then maybe he gets interested
- 45:05Speaker 1: in the manager role, because I mean the manager roles grind.
- 45:08Speaker 1: The very big difference from doing a little bit of
- 45:11Speaker 1: TV right a lot more heat. I mean, Braves fans,
- 45:17Speaker 1: they've got a great team and a great organization. Braves
- 45:20Speaker 1: fans have high expectations, rightfully so, But Kip, whenever I
- 45:24Speaker 1: go on like this year, I'll go on a radio
- 45:26Speaker 1: station in Atlanta and I'll make just just want to
- 45:29Speaker 1: make sure everyone listening here is aware, like the world
- 45:31Speaker 1: is not ending. This team won a World Series recently.
- 45:33Speaker 1: They're competitive every year. Like, I get it, this is
- 45:35Speaker 1: not a good year, but this fan base has experienced
- 45:39Speaker 1: really good baseball and almost every way, sorry you didn't
- 45:42Speaker 1: have time for that.
- 45:43Speaker 5: Were spoiled in a good way. They've had such a
- 45:45Speaker 5: good Yeah, spoiled.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Let's slap. And we have a quote that Ken Rosenthal
- 46:05Speaker 1: put out there from Max Scherzer on Giants new manager
- 46:08Speaker 1: Tony Vitello. By Tello was the pitching coach at Missouri
- 46:13Speaker 1: when Max Scherzer was there. I tell he is not
- 46:16Speaker 1: that much older than Max. Max is what forty one
- 46:19Speaker 1: ish forty two? I tell he's forty seven. But anyway,
- 46:22Speaker 1: Max said, I absolutely believe in him. He's to this
- 46:24Speaker 1: day one of my closest friends, and I absolutely believe
- 46:27Speaker 1: he's going to get it done at the big league level.
- 46:30Speaker 1: It sounds like at some point we're gonna have to
- 46:32Speaker 1: talk to forty one year old Max about toy Bytello.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Max a little busy right now. He's got a World
- 46:39Speaker 1: Series that he's going to pitch in.
- 46:41Speaker 3: M He's a little busier right now.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but mac Max is a big fan of foul
- 46:45Speaker 1: Territory as well, so we'll get him probably right after
- 46:48Speaker 1: World Series, I would say at this point to recap
- 46:51Speaker 1: it right.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:54Speaker 4: By the way, I got a couple of birthdays that
- 46:56Speaker 4: we have to shout out. One, Yes, Carbon Burns used
- 47:00Speaker 4: to be my favorite player, but not anymore. Two, eat
- 47:03Speaker 4: your row. Three Brad Thomas. If you don't know who
- 47:08Speaker 4: Brad Thomas is, he was a left handed pitcher. He
- 47:10Speaker 4: started came up with the Twins. Was supposed to be
- 47:12Speaker 4: on the plane in nine to eleven flying home to Australia,
- 47:15Speaker 4: one of the ones that was crashed. Michael Kadyer hit
- 47:17Speaker 4: a home run in the Double A Playoffs kept him
- 47:20Speaker 4: from being on that plane, so he missed that plane.
- 47:22Speaker 4: He would not be here today. So Brad X team
- 47:24Speaker 4: made of mind. Great story. And last, but not least,
- 47:27Speaker 4: Hector Carrasco. If you don't know who Hector Carrasco is,
- 47:29Speaker 4: looking him up. He's a right handed pitcher. He was
- 47:31Speaker 4: with the Twins when I came up. He lost his luggage,
- 47:33Speaker 4: like on every other charter flight. I never figured it out,
- 47:36Speaker 4: and then they'd have to give him money for his
- 47:38Speaker 4: clothing his luggage. So every like every third flight, he'd
- 47:40Speaker 4: be like, I lost my luggage, and they'd have to
- 47:42Speaker 4: give him a check for his clothing. Smart play, A
- 47:45Speaker 4: smart play, smart play, Hector. I don't know how you
- 47:49Speaker 4: lose your luggage on a charter flight, but he did
- 47:51Speaker 4: it often.
- 47:51Speaker 5: Wow.
- 47:53Speaker 1: At that door flung open and one bag fell.
- 47:57Speaker 4: It happened like five times when you were like, Hector
- 47:59Speaker 4: out hel, do you lose your luggage on a charter plane?
- 48:02Speaker 3: Bro? That's good And I literally happened like five times.
- 48:07Speaker 5: The flight guy's a cut that's how right exactly.
- 48:10Speaker 1: Flight guys got it in the cockpit, put it down
- 48:14Speaker 1: the suet.
- 48:15Speaker 3: Uh.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Do you guys know how old is one of guess
- 48:20Speaker 1: physics two.
- 48:20Speaker 3: I just saw him. He looks unbelievably good. I saw
- 48:22Speaker 3: him in here in Seattle.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Wow, he's a workout machine.
- 48:25Speaker 3: Dude's unbelievable good.
- 48:26Speaker 1: That guy looks he loves the game as much as
- 48:30Speaker 1: anybody I know.
- 48:31Speaker 3: But I was like, don't you have anything else to do?
- 48:33Speaker 1: No, he doesn't.
- 48:34Speaker 3: I mean he gotta have something to do. His whole
- 48:36Speaker 3: life is just be like you.
- 48:37Speaker 4: Going to Clue or to to Wrigleyfield every day and
- 48:39Speaker 4: just hanging out like.
- 48:40Speaker 1: No, I gotta fight something else to do working out
- 48:42Speaker 1: with I know, yeah, but it's it's cool. I love
- 48:48Speaker 1: a good life. For hey. We want to let the
- 48:54Speaker 1: world know the biggest men's college basketball event before March
