- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, the NewsRadio 1110 KFAB Certified Transmission Sports Brief, Husker
- 0:05Speaker 1: Buzz Edition with Jim Rose and Sean Callahan. All right, Sean,
- 0:08Speaker 1: how are you doing this bye week? What have you
- 0:10Speaker 1: been up to? Have you been earning an honest day's
- 0:13Speaker 1: wage for an honest day's work this week?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny. It's a bye week, but it's still
- 0:18Speaker 2: pretty busy. Just with obligations and things going, everyone kind
- 0:22Speaker 2: of schedules, or I schedule a lot of things for
- 0:24Speaker 2: the bio. Today I'm speaking over at the university to
- 0:27Speaker 2: a large group of students, telling them how to get
- 0:31Speaker 2: a job in this industry, or at least how it works. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 0:36Speaker 1: We don't need the competition, Sean. We could really prefer
- 0:38Speaker 1: you not do that. Dissuade those young people. Tell them, look,
- 0:42Speaker 1: get into HVAC service. That gives you a real chance
- 0:45Speaker 1: at a future.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, but it's been a quiet week. Huskers
- 0:52Speaker 2: practiced yesterday, and then they'll come today. And then we
- 0:56Speaker 2: heard from Matt Rule Monday, and that's really the extent
- 0:59Speaker 2: of the bye week here for Nebraska, and then back
- 1:02Speaker 2: to work here for Washington here when they get back
- 1:04Speaker 2: on Sunday.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Now the big buzz, of course, is what Matt Rule
- 1:07Speaker 1: said on Monday about Anthony Calandria. We touched on this yesterday,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and we'll keep talking about it because we generate rumors, innuendo,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and half-truths. Half-baked of theories on this program. It's one
- 1:17Speaker 1: of the reasons we dominate the ratings. But what would
- 1:21Speaker 1: happen here? Now, remember, before Anthony Calandria took off for
- 1:25Speaker 1: Nebraska last year, he was standing in front of reporters
- 1:28Speaker 1: at the Scooter's Coffee Bowl playing for UNLV and said,
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm not going anywhere. And they didn't play very well
- 1:36Speaker 1: in the game and wound up going somewhere else. How
- 1:38Speaker 1: does this work now? If there's somebody out there like,
- 1:41Speaker 1: let's say, Oklahoma, or Ole Miss, really interested in Anthony Calandria?
- 1:46Speaker 1: How does this process work?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of it's how his representation and how
- 1:52Speaker 2: he would want it to work. But, again, I think
- 1:55Speaker 2: he's happy here. And I think both parties obviously would
- 2:00Speaker 2: like to move forward and he'd return another year at Nebraska. And, again,
- 2:05Speaker 2: none of this could happen until January. But Nebraska does
- 2:08Speaker 2: have the pole position right now that they can– you know,
- 2:10Speaker 2: re-sign a guy and get it locked up now. And
- 2:13Speaker 2: they've been working on that since September, honestly. I think
- 2:16Speaker 2: they knew after the Michigan State game or around that
- 2:20Speaker 2: point they wanted to get this thing squared away. But, yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 2: a lot of it, again, comes down to what he wants.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And you just never know what other teams, how aggressive
- 2:29Speaker 2: they're really going to be, what that quarterback market's going
- 2:32Speaker 2: to look like. We know some big names that are
- 2:34Speaker 2: going to be in there, like Bryce Underwood. will be
- 2:37Speaker 2: one for sure that I think a lot of people
- 2:40Speaker 2: expect to be in there. But, yeah, the portal is
- 2:43Speaker 2: so unpredictable. And, you know, I think in relative terms,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Nebraska got Anthony Calandria almost at a bargain for what
- 2:49Speaker 2: he's given them. And, you know, the market resets here
- 2:53Speaker 2: every single offseason.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And they were lucky to get him because, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: they put all of their eggs in the Kenny Minchey basket.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He said yes and 11 hours later left for Kentucky.
- 3:02Speaker 1: So they were lucky to get him. If they had
- 3:04Speaker 1: been another day or two, possible that he would have
- 3:06Speaker 1: been down in Florida or Florida State or somewhere else
- 3:09Speaker 1: because Calandria was one of the better gets in the
- 3:11Speaker 1: quarterback portal last year. You talked about this off week.
- 3:15Speaker 1: This means injury recovery time, but some guys are not
- 3:19Speaker 1: coming back anytime soon, like Anthony Jones. It appears he's
- 3:23Speaker 1: out for a while with a broken foot, which means
- 3:25Speaker 1: that Cade Petchak, one of our favorites, is going to
- 3:28Speaker 1: get a lot more playing time against Washington.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a broken bone in his foot that Jones
- 3:34Speaker 2: suffered yesterday And he was able to play through the
- 3:36Speaker 2: end of that game, and they discovered it. But they
- 3:40Speaker 2: obviously had to get that repaired and taken care of.
- 3:43Speaker 2: No word on when he'd return later this year. But, yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 2: that just means Cade Petshock, who I think is a
- 3:50Speaker 2: really good player, just is playing behind Jones. So Petshock, Guarneri.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Cam Lenhardt, those three guys are going to have to
- 3:59Speaker 2: really split the top reps. Jaseer Whittington has moved out
- 4:04Speaker 2: and played some pass rushing defensive end at times. I mean,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but those first three are going to have to take
- 4:10Speaker 2: pretty much all of the reps. They had a nice
- 4:12Speaker 2: four-man group there before Jeremiah Jones can play in some
- 4:16Speaker 2: pass rush situations. But Yeah, that's a big one because
- 4:20Speaker 2: I do think Anthony Jones, especially when you play these
- 4:22Speaker 2: running offenses, he's a very good defensive end, stands up
- 4:26Speaker 2: on the edge. The edge play has been, I think,
- 4:28Speaker 2: one of the most improved areas year over year on
- 4:30Speaker 2: this defense.
- 4:31Speaker 1: All right, big guy, thanks. Have a nice time speaking
- 4:34Speaker 1: to the skulls full of mush down at Big Red today.
- 4:37Speaker 1: That's KFAB Husker and Strongman John Callahan.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Back tomorrow.
