- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Breck dot org. Saints are still
- 0:26Speaker 1: looking for a head coach and they're getting closer. If
- 0:33Speaker 1: for no other reason, it's just a it's a new day,
- 0:35Speaker 1: So another day has certainly brought you closer to the
- 0:38Speaker 1: day that you're gonna name a coach and somebody's gonna
- 0:41Speaker 1: take this job because, as Mickey Loomis told us, it's
- 0:45Speaker 1: one of thirty two. That's why it's a good job,
- 0:48Speaker 1: because it's a job which in and of itself is
- 0:52Speaker 1: indicative why this is a bad job when you have
- 0:54Speaker 1: nothing else to sell. But a lot of people are
- 0:58Speaker 1: reacting to the decision that my Mike McCarthy made, or
- 1:01Speaker 1: that was reported on Tuesday night that Mike McCarthy would
- 1:07Speaker 1: withdraw from consideration for the Saints job, that being the
- 1:10Speaker 1: only remaining job. Of course, that Mike McCarthy would withdraw
- 1:14Speaker 1: from the Saints job and sit out the twenty twenty
- 1:17Speaker 1: five season and then re enter the market in twenty
- 1:20Speaker 1: twenty six, it is worth noting that's exactly what Mike
- 1:22Speaker 1: McCarthy did when he was fired in Green Bay. He
- 1:25Speaker 1: was fired in Green Bay in twenty eighteen, he sat
- 1:27Speaker 1: out twenty nineteen, and then jumped back in as Jason
- 1:30Speaker 1: Garrett's replacement in Dallas in twenty twenty. So Mike McCarthy
- 1:36Speaker 1: nationally is a bigger story here because he's the guy
- 1:38Speaker 1: that was a Super Bowl winning coach with the Packers
- 1:40Speaker 1: and then coached the Cowboys. So all the national talking
- 1:43Speaker 1: heads are talking about this more from the McCarthy perspective
- 1:46Speaker 1: and less from the Saints perspective. But look, Harry Douglas,
- 1:49Speaker 1: the guy played a long time in the NFL. Here's
- 1:51Speaker 1: what he had to say about Mike McCarthy withdrawing from
- 1:53Speaker 1: Saints consideration.
- 1:55Speaker 2: It's not a bad thing, right if you sit out
- 1:57Speaker 2: a year, gather your thoughts in for a better opening
- 2:01Speaker 2: to come up, so you can also have a better
- 2:03Speaker 2: interview with whatever respected team in the future. And when
- 2:06Speaker 2: I'm looking at teams, Freddy, that could potentially come open
- 2:09Speaker 2: next season. Hey, Mike McDaniel, if the Miami Dolphins can't,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, get on their horse, that job might be open.
- 2:16Speaker 2: When I look at Shane Stike and Innianapolis Coats, if
- 2:20Speaker 2: you can't seem to get Anthony Richardson going and guys
- 2:23Speaker 2: to play better down the stretch, when you still have
- 2:25Speaker 2: an open window like they did in twenty twenty four,
- 2:27Speaker 2: one more I have is the New York Giants. If
- 2:30Speaker 2: Brian day Boy and company, if those guys can't get
- 2:33Speaker 2: the ship moving in a different direction and in a
- 2:36Speaker 2: positive and promising direction, and that's another job that could
- 2:38Speaker 2: potentially be open.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Look at the direction he took that conversation. Sometimes it's
- 2:45Speaker 1: good and beneficial to hear people outside of this ecosystem
- 2:53Speaker 1: give a perspective, because sometimes you like you'd call that
- 2:57Speaker 1: third party validation, right some thing, If you or I
- 3:00Speaker 1: say it, it's different if someone from outside from a
- 3:03Speaker 1: different perspective is saying the same thing. But Harry was
- 3:07Speaker 1: talking about looking at you from Mike McCarthy's lens, but
- 3:11Speaker 1: saying wait for a better job. I mean, Miami, Indy
- 3:16Speaker 1: Giants could all be open X shows would all be
- 3:18Speaker 1: better jobs than New Orleans. He's right, and that's the
- 3:20Speaker 1: problem New Orleans is running into. I mean, you look
- 3:22Speaker 1: at Miami. What if Miami does come out the next year. Okay,
- 3:25Speaker 1: we got two I understand too, has got concussion issues
- 3:27Speaker 1: and we'll see what that means. Miami was, by the way,
- 3:29Speaker 1: the oldest roster in the NFL this year. But you
- 3:34Speaker 1: do have a young franchise quarterback and you've got a
- 3:38Speaker 1: much better cap situation than the Saints do. As we
- 3:43Speaker 1: know Indianapolis Colts. Yeah, I mean, like Anthony Richardson may
- 3:49Speaker 1: not be the guy, but you'd still have a guy
- 3:51Speaker 1: who is a a highly thought of quarterback that was
- 3:57Speaker 1: a top the worth picking the draft the Giants. I
- 4:03Speaker 1: would assume the Giants are going to go draft the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Daniel Jones replacement this year in the draft, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 1: the young guy like Maliite neighbors. So bottom line is,
- 4:12Speaker 1: all these places are better opportunities than New Orleans, which
- 4:15Speaker 1: is kind of what we've talked about here for months
- 4:19Speaker 1: that the sound of being redundant, this was always going
- 4:24Speaker 1: to be the problem. We ran through that exercise where
- 4:29Speaker 1: I played the role of Ben Johnson and Muse was
- 4:31Speaker 1: Ben Johnson's agent. It's like, sell me on all the jobs,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and we went through everything, the quarterback situation, the ownership situation,
- 4:39Speaker 1: cap draft capital age at the roster, everything, and the
- 4:44Speaker 1: Saints were of the jobs we thought that were opener
- 4:46Speaker 1: would come open. The Saints were the worst job. And
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's manifesting, it's playing out. I mean, your top choice
- 4:54Speaker 1: was Aaron Glenn. He picked another team that the top
- 4:57Speaker 1: guy in the market, Ben Johnson, didn't even give you
- 4:59Speaker 1: an interview. Aaron Glenn picked somebody else. Joe Brady said,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm as stay in Buffalo. Cliff Kingsberry said,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I'm a good, I'm a stay in Washington. I mean
- 5:09Speaker 1: Mike McCarthy. When you look at the McCarthy news, I
- 5:12Speaker 1: know there's two ways to look at that. I should
- 5:15Speaker 1: say there is two ways to look at that. One
- 5:17Speaker 1: is he didn't want your job, wants to wait next
- 5:19Speaker 1: year for something better, or he wasn't going to get
- 5:22Speaker 1: the job. And that happens often where if a team
- 5:25Speaker 1: isn't going to hire a certain candidate, they tell the guy, hey,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you're not getting this job. So publicly they can say
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm withdrawing. It allows him to save face. Okay, that's fine.
- 5:37Speaker 1: The other part of that too, is you know, if
- 5:41Speaker 1: you're Mike McCarthy, you are kind of being strung along
- 5:45Speaker 1: a little bit here. It's like, do you ever watch
- 5:47Speaker 1: a show Shark Tank? You've ever seen that? I love that
- 5:48Speaker 1: show if you've ever watched it. It's a it's these
- 5:51Speaker 1: business people that are negotiating if they're gonna buy equity
- 5:54Speaker 1: into a company as an investor. But sometimes what will
- 5:56Speaker 1: happen in that show is like the first shark will
- 5:59Speaker 1: make an offer, and I mean, here you have this
- 6:03Speaker 1: person that's a super wealthy, successful business person that's made
- 6:08Speaker 1: an offer to buy equity in this company, and that
- 6:12Speaker 1: person saying, ah, it's a burd in hand. But what
- 6:14Speaker 1: if someone has a better offer, So they're like, I'm
- 6:16Speaker 1: gonna listen to everybody else. Well, that first person that
- 6:19Speaker 1: made the offer sometimes gets ticked and is like, you
- 6:21Speaker 1: know what, I'm out never mind. I mean, I made
- 6:24Speaker 1: you an offer, and now you're gonna go listen to
- 6:26Speaker 1: other people. Maybe that's where Mike McCarthy was going, like, listen,
- 6:29Speaker 1: I'm interested in the job. I'm a super Bowl winning coach.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I've won sixty percent of my games in my career.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I just had Dallas in the playoffs. I've been in
- 6:36Speaker 1: the playoffs eleven times. And you want to wait and
- 6:40Speaker 1: see if there's somebody better among guys that have never
- 6:42Speaker 1: been a coach before. I'm good. I'll wait for a
- 6:45Speaker 1: better opportunity next year. Like maybe that's where it was
- 6:48Speaker 1: with Mike McCarthy. I don't know. I mean in time.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I'm sure you know. As time goes on, all these
- 6:53Speaker 1: guys end up telling their stories. So we'll see what
- 6:54Speaker 1: ultimately happened here. But the bottom line is it's another
- 6:57Speaker 1: another negative situation for the Saints because you have another
- 7:01Speaker 1: viable candidate that for whatever reason, has withdrawn. So if
- 7:05Speaker 1: you're New Orleans, this is what you're down to. You're
- 7:08Speaker 1: down to Kellen Moore, who wasn't on anybody's radar when
- 7:12Speaker 1: this thing started. The initial odds about a month ago,
- 7:17Speaker 1: a little more than a month ago, but the middle
- 7:19Speaker 1: of December there were odds posted on who would be
- 7:22Speaker 1: the next Saints coach. Number sixteen candidates listed. Kellen Moore
- 7:26Speaker 1: wasn't one of the sixteen. But it's Kellen Moore, it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: retaining Darren Rizzy, and then it's Anthony Weaver and Mike Kafka.
- 7:36Speaker 1: That's your list, Like it's gonna be one of those
- 7:38Speaker 1: four guys. I mean, unless if there's a candidate none
- 7:40Speaker 1: of us foresee that maybe pops up here late in
- 7:43Speaker 1: the process, which I mean, I don't know that I
- 7:45Speaker 1: see that happening. It sounds like, I mean, you're waiting
- 7:48Speaker 1: to interview Joe Brady, that's not gonna happen. You're waiting
- 7:50Speaker 1: to interview Cliff Kingsbury, that's not gonna happen. You're supposed
- 7:52Speaker 1: to interview Mike McCarthy this week, that's not gonna happen.
- 7:54Speaker 1: So you've done all your interviews. I mean, you've had
- 7:57Speaker 1: four in person interviews. It's going to be one of
- 8:00Speaker 1: these guys, I mean, is is it Kellen Moore? I mean,
- 8:04Speaker 1: if it is, it's a young guy, offensive minded guy.
- 8:07Speaker 1: He checks some boxes. But I don't think that's the
- 8:10Speaker 1: type of hire that's going to make people super pumped thinking, Yep,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you found the guy that's going to transform this organization.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And in fairness, I don't know that many people thought
- 8:20Speaker 1: that about Sean Payton in two thousand and six and
- 8:23Speaker 1: it worked. Maybe it could work with Kellen Moore, maybe not,
- 8:26Speaker 1: but it is certainly it stings to see another viable
- 8:32Speaker 1: candidate scratched off the list because what's left right now
- 8:38Speaker 1: is not a very impressive list. It's not something that
- 8:40Speaker 1: should instill a lot of confidence for the New Orleans
- 8:43Speaker 1: Saints moving forward. And I'll continue to reiterate it for
- 8:46Speaker 1: those that haven't heard me say, and I've been saying
- 8:47Speaker 1: this for about two weeks now, and a lot you're
- 8:49Speaker 1: starting to hear this refrain a lot more from people,
- 8:52Speaker 1: but we've been saying it here for about two weeks.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I think your best option is to retain Daron Rizzy
- 8:59Speaker 1: for now. You're not gonna tell him you're retaining him
- 9:02Speaker 1: for a year, because if he comes here and he's awesome, great,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I just don't think that that's gonna happen. I think
- 9:08Speaker 1: you're gonna stink next year. But you retained Aaron Rizzy,
- 9:12Speaker 1: and a year from now, when your cap situation is
- 9:15Speaker 1: a much better spot. After you tank, you're gonna have
- 9:18Speaker 1: a top five pick and a deep quarterback draft class
- 9:21Speaker 1: to go draft your franchise. Some of those aging contracts
- 9:25Speaker 1: are gonna are gonna roll off of your roster, and
- 9:28Speaker 1: you're a much more attractive job a year from now
- 9:30Speaker 1: than you are right now. And then you go hire
- 9:33Speaker 1: Joe Brady or whoever is at Ben Johnson out of
- 9:36Speaker 1: near the top of the of the list because you're
- 9:38Speaker 1: because you are a more attractive destination where you can
- 9:40Speaker 1: have success. You're just not right now. It's the market
- 9:43Speaker 1: is speaking. All of these candidates that are not willing
- 9:48Speaker 1: to take your job. The market is speaking, you are
- 9:50Speaker 1: not an attractive spot, but you got to hire somebody.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So are you playing for the short term? Are you're
- 9:54Speaker 1: playing for the long term? Something we'll find out with
- 9:56Speaker 1: the gum Smack and Mickey here pretty soon
