- 3:07Players Association president JC Treader is stepping down from
- 3:12his position following the recent NFL collusion scandal.
- 3:16NFL PA Executive Director Lloyd Howell Junior also stepped down
- 3:20from his position after he was caught charging the players
- 3:24union over $3000 for strip club visits.
- 3:29Howell was also involved in a 2015 incident with another
- 3:34employee where they got thousands of dollars from a
- 3:38strip club, leading to people losing their jobs.
- 3:42Howell also worked as a consultant with a company called
- 3:47Carlisle Group and Where seeking minority ownership of some NFL
- 3:53teams which would go against CBA rules.
- 3:57The Association press Ben Vollin reports that JC Treader bent the
- 4:03rules to hire Howell, covered up a lot of of the scandals and hid
- 4:08a lot of the information on arbitration decisions from other
- 4:12NFLPA members. Several former NFL players,
- 4:16including Ben Watson, Damian Woody took shots at tread saying
- 4:21that the NFLPA should have or I'm sure should have yes removed
- 4:26him while a while ago. NFLPA Senior Director of Player
- 4:30Affairs Don Davis is likely to become the next NFLPA president
- 4:36after Treader stepped down. You know, it's an interesting
- 4:38story. I obviously I got AI got a
- 4:41message from Fish that we were going to talk about this because
- 4:44it's been a story for the last I would say 72 hours and it's
- 4:49really been the whole all week. It's been back and forth.
- 4:51The story hit. There was a writer that brought
- 4:54it out to the public and and it started to grow legs.
- 4:57And obviously this has been going on for a long, long time.
- 5:00It's not like the players union or the players didn't know about
- 5:03this because they were involved with it.
- 5:05So it wasn't hidden. The fact is, is when the NFL
- 5:09got, you know, it came out to the NFL and, and some of the
- 5:12owners, they got pissed off about it.
- 5:15No, I, I'm sure the owners didn't think it was a collusion
- 5:19because they were, I believe they knew something about this
- 5:22too. It couldn't have just happened
- 5:24over the last couple of years and completely just been thrown
- 5:27under the rug. Obviously owners knew about it,
- 5:30players knew about it, but it finally came out because there
- 5:34had to be a story. The NFL, there was no stories
- 5:36where where we went from the draft to free agency and
- 5:40everybody's trying to find something.
- 5:41All these writers are trying to find something before OTAs or,
- 5:45you know, preseason starts, which is a right around the
- 5:48corner. You're talking about the
- 5:49preseason. What is it 3 weeks away?
- 5:51You're going to we're going to see the Hall of Fame in Duxy and
- 5:54then we're going to see the first preseason game over there
- 5:57in in, in Cleveland, in Cleveland.
- 6:00So I obviously the NFL and and these writers are trying to find
- 6:04a story. So this story was something that
- 6:07was brewing. It was brewing from last year
- 6:09because obviously over the last three years, there was something
- 6:12going on with Jon Gruden in those text messages and those
- 6:15emails and everything. And Jon Gruden lost his job with
- 6:19the Raiders. What was it 3 years ago?
- 6:21And then nobody, not anybody has come out with that list of guys
- 6:25because they were like 70 own 70 different people, including
- 6:29owners, GM's, coaches that were on those emails.
- 6:34But the only. Wasn't it like 10 years though?
- 6:36Like 10 going back. Of 2012 to like 21.
- 6:39It was it was going on for a while, but nobody knows who was
- 6:42on those lists except John Gruden and then obviously
- 6:45Schneider and Goodell. Those were the only three guys I
- 6:49think were released and that on the 70 or 80 guys that were
- 6:53involved in that scandal. Now this scandal is starting to
- 6:57grow legs. Now, I don't know if it was so
- 6:59much of A scandal, unless there's more to this scandal
- 7:02that meets the eye now. I don't know.
- 7:05And there's nothing that's come out.
- 7:06Maybe the NFL is going to brush it under the rug as they've done
- 7:09it so very well over the years. Go ask the New England Patriots
- 7:12how many times they brush those under the rug.
- 7:15I we, we all know about Spygate. Deflategate wasn't anything
- 7:18about a gate. But obviously the NFL was trying
- 7:21to drop the hammer on Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and and
- 7:24Robert Kraft because owners did not like the fact that those
- 7:28tapes were not shown and they burned the tapes before it could
- 7:30even get out there. But there's, and it's not just
- 7:33the NFL, professional sports, the MLB, there's scandals.
- 7:37It happens all the time and it's covered up the NBA.
- 7:40How many scandals have been with the NBA, as we all call it, the
- 7:43LJ? Well, I call it the LJ because
- 7:45LeBron James, I'm sure when he retires and he steps away from
- 7:49the NBA, there'll be stories coming out.
- 7:51There were some kind of scandals involved with LeBron James and
- 7:53some of the better players in the league.
- 7:55Dwyane Wade over the years was very connected to the players
- 7:59union. Chris Paul was the voice of the
- 8:02players union. So I'm sure the NBA has stories
- 8:04and stories that haven't come out yet.
- 8:06But the NFL is the biggest sport in the United States.
- 8:10It's the number one sport. It sells billions and billions
- 8:14of tickets and billions of billions of merchandise.
- 8:17And then obviously what it brings in for the Super Bowl is
- 8:21just absolutely ridiculous. So the NFL where they we're
- 8:24selling five and a half million dollar 32nd commercials at Sue
- 8:29at the Super Bowl this year. You, you look at the money that
- 8:32is bringing in. I'm not surprised that this
- 8:35story comes out. And how old is a guy that was
- 8:39trying to be a part of ownership?
- 8:41He was trying to buy a team. He was involved with it.
- 8:43He was taking millions and millions of dollars from the
- 8:46players union and the players. Remember, $3,000,000 isn't a lot
- 8:50of money. OK, I, I want to, I want to get
- 8:52that through to you guys. There were stories coming out
- 8:54that he was stealing millions of dollars, and then I'm hearing
- 8:58through a different story that I was reading today, it was like
- 9:023,000,000 a year. That's what he was making about
- 9:04$3,000,000. That's not a lot of money when
- 9:07it comes to a sport that's bringing in billions and
- 9:09billions of dollars. Last year the NFL brought in
- 9:13almost 2025 1/2 billion dollars the year before that almost 17
- 9:18or 18 billion. So it went up almost $6 billion.
- 9:21And, and with the CBA and the TV deals that they're bringing in
- 9:25and now the options that some of these players are going to get,
- 9:28look at JJ, TJ Watt that look at the contract that he just got
- 9:32recently. What was it over the weekend?
- 9:35It was the biggest contract besides of court a quarterback.
- 9:38He I think he's making 42 and a half, $1,000,000 a year now.
- 9:41Well deserved by the way, I'm not saying that it was and it
- 9:43isn't the fact is the NFLPA knew about this.
- 9:47This is not something that was hidden for years.
- 9:50It's a story that came out because a writer wanted to get
- 9:53something out where he can become the center of attraction.
- 9:57And that's what these writers are doing now.
- 9:59They're trying to find a story and then it comes and a lot of
- 10:03these players I I was watching things on YouTube today, a lot
- 10:06of these ex players that are still in involved with the
- 10:08union. They said that obviously this is
- 10:11a sad story. This is not a happy story for
- 10:13the players union, but they said there's a lot of collusion that
- 10:17goes on or goes around in professional sports.
- 10:19And then also I watched, I'm not going to mention the show that I
- 10:23was watching. He had a, one of these ex
- 10:25players that were involved with the union for many, many years.
- 10:28He asked him and he said, well, this goes on in unions in every
- 10:32single, you know, every single union.
- 10:34This goes on in not just sports, but every single union.
- 10:37And this particular guy said, well, wait a second, not every
- 10:41union every got every player, every person is a millionaire.
- 10:44So he's absolutely right. When you when you see this kind
- 10:47of money being flashed around and $3000 is nothing to the
- 10:51players union, as a matter of fact, it only gives you a
- 10:54thought in your mind how much money is getting thrown around
- 10:58under the table. That's what's scary about the
- 11:00NFL and everybody talks about and I have attacked Ohtani for
- 11:04the betting scandal at the MLB was trying to cover up for over
- 11:08the last what, 2 years? Now we're talking about this.
- 11:11Now this is a scandal, but is it really that big of a scandal
- 11:16when we know that professional sports for years have been, how
- 11:20about college sports, what they've been doing for players?
- 11:23Now all of a sudden we have the NIL deals and these players are
- 11:26making money. How many times before the FBI
- 11:29got involved with it, before the Mafia got involved with it, how
- 11:32much money was being pushed under the table for these
- 11:35players to decide, hey, you know what, I want to go to this
- 11:37school. I want to go to that school.
- 11:39So it's been going on. Collusion's been going on
- 11:42forever. Let's not forget the Arabs that
- 11:44funded Deon Sanders. Yeah.
- 11:45So obviously this is obviously a big story.
- 11:49The NFL is trying to cover it up and howl stepping down and
- 11:53obviously the the Treader situation, him stepping down.
- 11:57Here's the thing, the senior director of player affairs is
- 12:01not an important position, just to let everybody know it.
- 12:04It's a it's a position. It's not the biggest, it's not
- 12:07the most important position when it comes to the NFL players
- 12:10union. Now there's a line of players
- 12:13that are involved in communication with these lead
- 12:16guys, these lead guys that are running the players union.
- 12:19This is a position that is highly touted because there's
- 12:23money that there's a lot of money that these guys make.
- 12:25If you're on the board, you're making money.
- 12:27OK, so when you're speaking, you're going to strip bars and
- 12:31you're embarrassing yourself. I understand why you would bring
- 12:35some of these guys, these players to the strip bars.
- 12:37Why it it attracts, it attracts money, it attracts women, it
- 12:42attracts everything and it gets the players wanting to come to
- 12:45the players union and sit down and have a conversation.
- 12:48How do you actually discuss any of this when you go to a strip
- 12:51bar? I mean, except Nathan, because
- 12:53Nathan's the type of guy that would have all his buddies go to
- 12:57a strip bar and have a conversation not just about
- 12:59money, but tits and ass. I mean, Nissan would be the only
- 13:03person I know would go to a strip bar and have a business
- 13:07conversation. I don't think anybody
- 13:10intelligent would actually take a multi billion dollar
- 13:14organization players union to a strip bar to have a business
- 13:19conversation unless you were going for your own hidden
- 13:21agenda. And that's what I think it was.
- 13:23I obviously there's a lot of perverts in the game as we all
- 13:26know, and I'm not going to mention some of these X athletes
- 13:29actually I can name there was a quarterback and a cornerback
- 13:34that was very distinct on going to strip bars every single year
- 13:39in the NFL. And I think if you think back,
- 13:42one of them played for Tennessee and the other one played for the
- 13:44Bengals. A quarterback played for the
- 13:46Bengals and the other one was a quarterback that was a top draft
- 13:49pick with Matt Leinert. So am I throwing you guys a bone
- 13:53here? I think everybody knows who I'm
- 13:54talking about that love to go to strip bars and hang out at strip
- 13:57bars. And I'm sure Jabba at some
- 14:00points before he got married, love to go to strip bars.
- 14:02Athletes love to go there because got a lot of money and
- 14:05they could throw whatever they want to these girls and they're
- 14:08going to give them nice lap dances and pull down their
- 14:10panties and have a little fun with them.
- 14:12To me, if you're going and you're working on a business
- 14:15deal, you're not going to a strip bar.
- 14:17But again, this wasn't about business.
- 14:19This is about satisfication. Satisfication.
- 14:23And the problem right now with the NFL is the NFL thinks
- 14:26they're untouchable. Professional sports think
- 14:29they're untouchable. There's so much money to be had
- 14:32and and nobody really cares about the the players or what
- 14:37the players are getting after the fact after they retire.
- 14:40And that's why the NFL has gotten away with it for many,
- 14:42many years. And then you look at now all the
- 14:45money that's getting thrown in the union and what these players
- 14:47are making now, it's sad because let's go to Joe Montana.
- 14:51Joe Montana played in when the 90's, the the, the late 80s,
- 14:56actually early 80s and into the 90s.
- 14:59How much money was he making, $100,000, 150?
- 15:03K he made more for his video game.
- 15:05I'm just saying they were making no money.
- 15:07Now you have quarterbacks, backup quarterbacks making more
- 15:11money in in a in a four year span and they made their whole
- 15:15career. Just think about how much money
- 15:17is out there with the NFL, with the CBA S and and the television
- 15:21deals and and all the, the different, you know, memorabilia
- 15:25that they're selling, autograph signings, all the different
- 15:28things that these players are making on and off the field.
- 15:31It to me the NFL fell and and I I'm not saying the FBI needs to
- 15:35get involved to authorities need to get involved because if they
- 15:38wanted to get involved, they should have got involved a long,
- 15:40long time ago. Because ladies and gentlemen,
- 15:43this has been going on for 10s of years, I'm talking.
- 15:47About doesn't that make if the FBI gets involved, doesn't it
- 15:49feel like like where there's smoke, there's fire?
- 15:52Of course. There might be more to it.
- 15:54Of course there's going. To be a lot more.
- 15:55To it there's a lot more to this story.
- 15:57It's not just oh, they go to strip bars they're doing other
- 16:00things at the strip bars they're how do we know there's no
- 16:03betting scandal over there at the strip bars?
- 16:05You know, obviously betting is so illegal and players shouldn't
- 16:10be betting on their sports as we've seen this over and over
- 16:13and over again in basketball and what we've seen in baseball over
- 16:15the last couple of years. Now, I do believe the NFL
- 16:19there'll be scandals and we're going to hear many, many
- 16:21scandals. This story is a scandal for one
- 16:23reason. These guys stepped down because
- 16:25they knew that the NFL probably gave them a nice I, I don't
- 16:29know, the players union probably gave them some nice money to
- 16:31step away because yes, severance pay because they don't want them
- 16:35to go out there. They don't want them to speak to
- 16:37the press because if they speak to the press and they throw
- 16:39other guys under the bus, how bad is the NFL going to look?
- 16:42How bad is the players union going to look if some of these
- 16:46big stories? Now, I do believe one of these
- 16:49guys are going to come out in the next couple of years and
- 16:53write a book. Why?
- 16:54Because it's all about Mucho De Niro, it's all about money.
- 16:59And one of these idiots are going to come out and say, you
- 17:01know what, I want to write a book.
- 17:03I'll give you a $10 million, let me write a book about it.
- 17:06And he's going to come out. One of these two idiots are
- 17:09going to come out and give away a lot of different people.
- 17:12A lot of people that were involved with it that you
- 17:14wouldn't even expect was involved with this.
- 17:16You think Roger Goodell didn't go to one of these strip clubs?
- 17:18Come on guys, Roger Goodell is the biggest pervert of them all.
- 17:22I mean, I'm not going to sit here and and try to beat around
- 17:24the Bush. This is the same Roger Goodell
- 17:26that just got an extension. What was it 2 years ago that
- 17:29made a deal with the owner stating that he wanted him and
- 17:34his children and his wife to have a lifetime of insurance,
- 17:39medical insurance. Meanwhile, he won't give former
- 17:42players a lifetime of medical insurance and he made sure that
- 17:46he had his own jet, win or lose, decide to step down or not.
- 17:50He has his own jet to use and his own his own his own
- 17:54occasions to go fly to his family's reunions and stuff like
- 17:57that. The NFL let's this man do
- 18:00whatever he wants as what we we know he did to that CTE doctor
- 18:04when when the story was coming out, how the NFL was trying to
- 18:07brush that under the the rock. How many players have come up or
- 18:10stories coming out that players were diagnosed with CTE grade
- 18:14one, grade two, grade 3. We've had a couple of them on
- 18:16the show and the NFL don't want to speak about it anymore.
- 18:18As a matter of fact, nobody speaks about CTE as much as they
- 18:22did 5-6 years ago. Why?
- 18:24Because the NFL probably paid these guys off to shut their
- 18:28mouths. Yeah.
- 18:28And Bilal Powell was a big one that mentioned to it because he
- 18:31does a lot of the CTE studies to it.
- 18:32And he was saying how the NFL players union as a whole has to
- 18:36get stronger. And I think he was another one
- 18:38that I think was pushing for these types, same types of
- 18:40treatments. And it get looks even worse
- 18:42where you have a former player in JC Treader as well.
- 18:45He was a Center for the Packers and then he played a couple
- 18:47years with the Browns. That's allowing this kind of
- 18:49thing to happen, covering it up and basically stealing money
- 18:53from other players too. Because yeah, you mentioned
- 18:55$3,000,000 is not much for the league, but for somebody's
- 18:58contract, several amount of NFL players contracts, that kind of
- 19:01thing still could hurt them percentage wise.
- 19:04Yes, there are other unions that aren't making a lot of money
- 19:06too, but the percentage factor and the principle that has to go
- 19:09into it, and that's why a lot of these unions have these kinds of
- 19:11protests too. And the NFLPA, we've a lot of
- 19:14our guests have said has to be stronger because of that.
- 19:16But it's hard for them to be stronger when you have all these
- 19:19guys that are covering it up like JC Treader, and then you
- 19:21have another guy and Howell that's essentially.
- 19:23Playing, but what are they covering up?
- 19:25I mean, this story came out. I mean they go to strip bars and
- 19:28they're going to strip clubs and and negotiating deals for the
- 19:31players union. I I mean, what is it that has
- 19:35come out that we have heard so far far in the story that has
- 19:38grown legs? The only thing we know is these
- 19:41guys are stepping down at their positions because they don't
- 19:45want story, some of these stories that come out in the
- 19:48open and. So, well, let me give you the
- 19:50conspiracy theory situation here, Errol.
- 19:53The conspiracy theory says that all of the four stories, and we
- 19:57started with a story on this when there was a collusion thing
- 20:00that got brushed under the rug with Deshaun Watson's guaranteed
- 20:03contract. Now pay attention what's going
- 20:06on with the second round picks right now, How they were all
- 20:08unsigned until recently because they wanted guaranteed money in
- 20:12their deals. Guess what team decided to sign
- 20:15their second round picks to a fully guaranteed deal causing
- 20:18all this? The very same Cleveland Browns.
- 20:22So now we have this situation where we know and it came out
- 20:26through this Pablo Tory podcast that the first thing that came
- 20:31out was that they had a collusion case dead to rights
- 20:34and they just let it go so that they wouldn't have these
- 20:36guaranteed deals. As if the players union
- 20:39president or executive director, whatever his title was, should
- 20:42be doing anything against the players best interest.
- 20:45Of course the players union president should be advocating
- 20:48for as much money in hand as possible.
- 20:51It's unbelievable that he did that, but they weren't saying he
- 20:55did that until now. It's obvious that that's what
- 20:58was going on. So the second part that they
- 21:01covered up was with Treader. Now Treader is was behind the
- 21:04organization committee. They had to come up with who the
- 21:08next executive director was going to be.
- 21:09So when they hired this guy, it used to be a transparent
- 21:12process. They would let everybody know.
- 21:15They made it a backroom deal and nobody was allowed to know why
- 21:19they picked Lloyd Howell Junior. They didn't.
- 21:22They didn't disclose the strip club stuff from a decade and
- 21:251/2. And the other company too.
- 21:26He's trying to buy ownership stake in a team.
- 21:28And on top of that, he resigned today.
- 21:31Like in the last hour it came across ESPN from that other
- 21:34company that with the team because now all the strip club
- 21:37stuff came out. And The thing is he's using
- 21:39public funds. That's the money that's supposed
- 21:41to go to funding, you know, these players, health insurance
- 21:45policies. Sounds like a Brett Farve on his
- 21:47own. Sounds like Brett Farve.
- 21:49Well, the Brett Farve thing was like Medicaid scam.
- 21:52It was like it was different and then and like honestly, the
- 21:55government in that state had a lot to do with it being corrupt.
- 21:58This was just simply a guy who's gotten away with shit his whole
- 22:01life, was enabled and put in this spot by people that are.
- 22:05Very. But here.
- 22:05But here's the problem. Even the guy from the podcast
- 22:08that the story was coming out, he's very well respected around
- 22:11the NFL. These guys were actually friends
- 22:14with this guy and he comes out. Yeah, he comes out on his
- 22:19podcast and froze the this collusion out there and threw
- 22:23these guys under the bus. Meanwhile, they're buddies.
- 22:25He probably was at those strip bars hanging out with them.
- 22:28So now all of a sudden he comes out with the story and now the
- 22:32NFL is trying to cover it up, try to find ways to to get these
- 22:36guys away from the product in the in the, the, the the
- 22:40programming and and now the NFL is.
- 22:43But here's the thing. The best part about this story
- 22:45is you have preseason right around the corner.
- 22:48You have the whole of fame right around the corner.
- 22:50So even though this is a story and there's nothing to talk
- 22:53about with the NFL camps are opening up right now, it's all
- 22:57going to be brushed under the rug.
- 22:58The NFL is going to cover this up and nobody's going to talk
- 23:01about this again probably until the the season is over or
- 23:06there's another story that's going to be connected to this.
- 23:08Like you were just saying the Brown story with the Watson and
- 23:11then the second round picks and then obviously who was the one
- 23:14that got Shudor Sanders? The Cleveland Browns.
- 23:17Yeah. I mean, just think about it.
- 23:19The Cleveland Browns are connected to so many of the so
- 23:23much of the distress of the NFL over the last couple years.
- 23:26Everybody makes fun of The Jets and over the years, but I'm just
- 23:29saying The Jets, Cincinnati, for years, they could never get over
- 23:33the hump. Now they got a quarterback.
- 23:35But this is organizations that can't find a way to get out of
- 23:38their own way. And now you have the NFL.
- 23:40They're a multi billion dollar organization.
- 23:42The NFL is right. The season's right around the
- 23:44corner. Nobody's going to be talking
- 23:46about just like the Otani thing. Do you?
- 23:48Do you remember how big of a story that was as soon as the
- 23:51FBI got involved with it and brushed it under the rug and
- 23:54probably got paid off? Nobody's talking about the Otani
- 23:56story and betting on baseball anymore.
- 23:59No, nobody even forgot. Everybody forgot about it and
- 24:02this is a story again. It's a story.
- 24:05There is collusion. Unless there's something that's
- 24:07connected to this that could really burn a hole in the
- 24:10players union, nobody's even going to be talking about this
- 24:13in the next two or three weeks. Yeah, you're also judging the
- 24:16outside right influence too with these other companies too, even
- 24:18besides just the NFL. And I agree with you.
- 24:19I think there's other NFL league executives that probably could
- 24:21be like you were talking about with the.
- 24:22Gruden, they're paid off. Yeah, these guys.
- 24:24I believe it in some combination of it too.
- 24:26And like I said, it makes it even worse when it's a player
- 24:29doing that because I had problems with Troy Vincent when
- 24:31he was the NFLPA president for a while.
- 24:32So he did not do a lot of very good things.
- 24:34So when they transitioned to Treader, it seemed like there
- 24:35was a little bit of some amount of progression, but now you're
- 24:37seeing all these guys come out and take shots at him as well.
- 24:39But again, it's also these other companies that are being
- 24:41factored in. And that's the same thing that
- 24:43happened in college football. Although these scandals we've
- 24:45talked about too, with the Yam Oliva, with the Vanderbilt
- 24:47quarterback, Pavia and all those guys getting all these money
- 24:50from these other companies too, like I said, with Deion Sanders
- 24:53funneling thumbs from all these different other countries.
- 24:55By the way, nobody's talking about that anymore.
- 24:57Has anybody brought on that? Deion's brought up that Deion
- 25:00Sanders scandal. That was a big scandal.
- 25:03Think about how much money he was taking from the Saudi
- 25:06Arabian Princess and all these business owners over there.
- 25:10And he was using it to draw players to come through the
- 25:13portal and pay them off to come to play for his school.
- 25:16Just think of about that and nobody's talking about it
- 25:18anymore. Nobody.
- 25:20Deion Sanders took millions upon millions of dollars and was
- 25:23getting away with it, and nobody's talking about it.
- 25:26It's Deion Sanders. It's prime.
- 25:28Nobody cares anymore. I think it was north of 20
- 25:31wasn't. It it was a lot of much a.
- 25:32Lot and again, it was going on for a while too, where we get
- 25:35other rich guys involved too, especially in a country like
- 25:38that, in an area like that that's very rich in the world.
- 25:41And same kind of thing with some of the other ones.
- 25:42I think the the Pavia 1 was a Italian mob mafia and again,
- 25:48there's going to be a lot of connections.
- 25:49When you hear unions, you hear mafia say whatever you want.
- 25:53The unions are connected to the Mafia.
- 25:55It's always been that way since the 1960s.
- 25:58So for anybody, it's Jimmy Hoffa.
- 26:00Jimmy Hoffa, who, by the way, did you watch?
- 26:02The Irishman, by the way, Yes, of course, the three hour and a
- 26:05half hour, it was like 4 1/2 it. Was a lose.
- 26:07Forever, but it like details that the mobs ties with the
- 26:11Teamsters dating back in the 50s and before that.
- 26:14And it's one of those great, you know, it's so long, you got to,
- 26:17like, really commit. To a movie.
- 26:19I love that, it was great. And it's kind of tough, like
- 26:21watching De Niro at age 80. D Age No.
- 26:24What was tough, what was tough is De Niro's usually the boss or
- 26:27he's like the the prime leader. And then it's Joe Pesci.
- 26:31Joe Pesci was the leader and he was the the main bad guy.
- 26:35And Robert De Niro and yeah, and Robert De Niro was the, the, the
- 26:39lonely guy, the, the guy on the outskirts of the mafia.
- 26:42It was, it was definitely not something that you would expect
- 26:45on a mafia movie. But I, I, I will say this, when
- 26:48you hear union, you hear Italian mafia, there's the mafia's
- 26:51involved with this and, and, and there's going to be a scandal.
- 26:54Not pescios. Pacino.
- 26:56Pacino played. Was it?
- 26:57Was it Pacino? Was Hoffa.
- 26:59Yes, it was Pacino, yes, but I'm talking about I'm talking
- 27:02actually, I know it was who was who played from the Hoffa movie
- 27:06The the the. He was in it, too.
- 27:08Pesci was in it too. Yeah, but who played?
- 27:10Pesci had a advisory role. Who would who was?
- 27:13Who's the Joker from the Batman? I always the first Batman.
- 27:16No, the first Batman the the the first Jack Nicholson.
- 27:19Jack Nicholson played Hoffa in the old.
- 27:22Hoffa movie, Yes. Yeah.
- 27:24Yeah, the original 1. Yes, and he was great in that
- 27:26movie, by the way, he was great. And and and again, I when you
- 27:30hear mafia, when you hear unions, you know it has
- 27:32something to do with the mafia. But again, we don't know the the
- 27:35the full end of this story. I don't think we will this year.
- 27:39I think as the season moves forward and the season tells,
- 27:43tells to the end in the Super Bowl and everything like that, I
- 27:46think we're going to hear a lot more in depth on this story.
- 27:50I just think the NFL is going to try to cover it up and they can
- 27:52now because training, you know, obviously, I guess you call what
- 27:57do they call a camp, training camp.
- 27:58They have camp that starts and then there's a preseason, a
- 28:01couple weeks in the Hall of Fame.
- 28:02So nobody's going to be talking about this.
- 28:04What I really want to know is when's that?
- 28:06When is that list of owners and executives that were on that
- 28:12e-mail with John Gruden? That's what I want to know,
- 28:15because John Gruden, I, I know it'll never happen.
- 28:17Because some of them could be connected to that story too.
- 28:19Never. You're absolutely right job.
- 28:21It'll never happen because the NFL is all about collusion.
- 28:24They're all about, you know, brushing things under the rug as
- 28:27the CTE thing was brushed under the rug for many, many years.
- 28:30And now they're trying to figure figure out what is going to
- 28:33protect these players. Nothing is going to protect
- 28:36these guys heads, nothing unless you wear those weird things on
- 28:40their helmets, what some of the players are.
- 28:42Nothing is going to protect these players from concussions
- 28:45and all the different things that they.
- 28:46Help some, but you you're still getting get a concussion with a.
- 28:50Girl, these rule changes isn't going to help the game.
- 28:53It hasn't helped the game. Concussions are still very high.
- 28:56So you can't sit here in the NFL and you know what, nobody's
- 28:59talking about it. Why?
- 29:00Because the NFL is making money. They're making billions and
- 29:02billions of dollars. And, and what they're bringing
- 29:05this year, I I believe you're going to see the NFL sell their
- 29:07first commercial for $10 million.
- 29:10Just think about that for a 32nd to minute commercial.
- 29:13They're going to make $10 million.
- 29:15It it's sickens me how much money the NFL is bringing in.
- 29:18And hey, you can't you can't knock an organization that knows
- 29:21how to make it. Me and Java can be the
- 29:24commissioner of the NFL and bring in that kind of money.
- 29:26Why? Because if it's a good product
- 29:28and people are watching it and spending all this money and
- 29:30betting and betting is becoming legalized everywhere in the
- 29:33country, nobody's going to take away from the growth of an
- 29:37organization that is always try to build up through the players
- 29:42and the players aren't getting anything at the tail end.
- 29:44The owners are. And that Lady, ladies and
- 29:46gentlemen, is something that the players union need to figure
- 29:49out, even though they're making a lot more money and with the TV
- 29:53deals, they're bringing in more money.
- 29:54And that's why guys like, as we said, TJ Watt is making 42 and a
- 29:58half, $1,000,000 to play at the defensive position.
- 30:01It still bothers me that these owners are bringing in this kind
- 30:04of money and not not willing to protect the former players and
- 30:09give them a lifetime of insurance to help these guys
- 30:13after they walk away from the sport when they have knee
- 30:15injuries, head trauma, problems with their, you know, mental
- 30:19issues, right? And all the different things
- 30:21that we've heard over the last couple of years.
- 30:23Yeah, mental health is something that the new players union
- 30:25actually was doing a good job progressing with at the
- 30:27beginning of Treader's tenure too.
- 30:29But again, and maybe it wasn't even his influence.
- 30:30And that even been a lot of other guys too.
- 30:32And like you said, how many owners could be involved in
- 30:34this? Like you said, they're not going
- 30:35to care. They're not going to they're
- 30:36going to take in all the money that they can get.
- 30:37So, oh, this this player that was a 52nd guy on our roster is
- 30:41doing stuff at a strip club, embezzling money essentially.
- 30:43They're not going to care. The owners are not going to care
- 30:46about that to the same level that they would care about their
- 30:48own money. And, you know, Roger Goodell's
- 30:49not going to care about that because he's just signed a $55
- 30:51million contract, Like he said, lifetime benefits.
- 30:53So they're they're going to be more of that.
- 30:54Who said there's other more, not other more league executives
- 30:57under fire for this kind of thing, too?
- 30:59And like I said, it's just hard for the players union to have
- 31:02that kind of thing where you have somebody in Lloyd Howell
- 31:03that's playing both sides and trying to get money for himself
- 31:06so. You, you don't want that.
- 31:08Like I I had it bad enough as a teacher in in New York and New
- 31:12Jersey. Florida doesn't even have union.
- 31:15It's like a fake like Fugazi union that they have there and
- 31:18you don't get any support from the union.
- 31:20They tell you they're going to give you support.
- 31:21If the school wants to fire you, they're going to fire you.
- 31:24And if the team wants to get rid of you, they're going to get rid
- 31:26of you in these sports as well. It's just how the world world
- 31:28is. It's not any different.
- 31:29What does a union get you? A union can get you more money.
- 31:32A union can get you better benefits.
- 31:35A union can help you with things like mental health, like you
- 31:37were saying, speedy that they started doing more recently in
- 31:41the more recent years. And if you because like it's all
- 31:45about the players. If the players don't care,
- 31:48they're stupid is basically what some of these these guys were
- 31:51saying in the media, and they should care because this comes
- 31:54out of your check. Everybody knows if you belong to
- 31:56a union, when you look at your pay stub, that money that they
- 31:59take out, there's a code that that money's for the union and
- 32:02everyone looks at their pay stub.
- 32:04As far as I know, maybe not Shohei Otani because he lost $17
- 32:07million and didn't know anything about it.
- 32:09More than that, more than that that we know about publicly, but
- 32:14it's that you, you should know if you're giving that money, do
- 32:17you really want the guy in charge to be working against
- 32:20you? I mean, I, I would be livid if I
- 32:23was a player, especially if I was a player making league
- 32:26minimum, right? Or like maybe I, I was, I got a
- 32:29rookie contract. I was a mid round pick.
- 32:31Now I'm sticking around. I get another smaller deal.
- 32:34I don't have a ton of money. I might not make it to that
- 32:37threshold where I get the the retirement benefits.
- 32:39I really want someone to fight for me.
- 32:41I would be really, really mad if.
- 32:44Yeah, but again, you, you have all these guys in.
- 32:47And again, Treader was a guy that, you know, spoke for the
- 32:50players, but the players speak for the players as much as he's
- 32:53the last guy to go through. They these guys to me, they're
- 32:56puppets. That's what they are.
- 32:57You pull the string. Hey, you, you want to be In
- 32:59Sync? You want to, you know, buy, buy,
- 33:00buy that that song. And they like little little tea
- 33:04body freaking puppets. Marinettes.
- 33:05Yeah, there you are, right there.
- 33:07As you. The choppa knows more than I do.
- 33:09The fact is, they're puppets. They're the players.
- 33:12Puppets. We they have list of guys that
- 33:15going a round table and they talk to this one guy.
- 33:17So this guys making millions and millions of guys, millions of
- 33:20millions of dollars sitting there with a bunch of players
- 33:23and making decisions for the players.
- 33:24To me, it it smells. If it smells like crap and it
- 33:28looks like crap, it's crap. And that's what the NFL is
- 33:32trying to sell to the fan. And the fact is the fan doesn't
- 33:35care. You know why?
- 33:36Because all they care about is their fantasy team.
- 33:38They care about what are they betting?
- 33:40When's the season starting? Are you adding an 18th game?
- 33:43And players don't want to add an 18th game because in their eyes,
- 33:46yeah, all right, there's more money that could be, you know,
- 33:49spread out for the wealthy, especially the players.
- 33:52But here's the problem. More chances for injury and
- 33:55seizing ending injury or maybe career ending injuries because
- 33:58these guys are going like a hotcakes as we see these
- 34:02Achilles tears, these hamstring situations that these players
- 34:05are getting because they're playing on turf.
- 34:07If the NFL, Pennsylvania or in the NFL players actually care
- 34:10about what's going on instead of this conclusion collusion, what
- 34:14they should be looking at is the football fields.
- 34:16Is there not too many collusional things that is
- 34:19happening out there right now in a football field?
- 34:22Just think about it. There's two NFL football fields
- 34:24that is grass and the rest is turf.
- 34:26How many injuries do we see strategically?
- 34:29Every single year, bad entries to quarterbacks and everybody's
- 34:32talking about, well, you got to find a good backup quarterback.
- 34:35How many quality backup quarterbacks are there in the
- 34:38NFL? 4/3 at best.
- 34:41So if you don't have one of them, your season is over.
- 34:43The NFL needs to figure out, hey, if you're going to waste
- 34:46money on plant paying idiots like Treador $3,000,000 a year,
- 34:50well then why don't you go and pay for a nice football field
- 34:54which is grass, which will maybe cost you 10 or $11 million.
- 34:57What is that $7,000,000 more where it could protect your
- 35:01players and put your players in better positions to succeed for
- 35:04the season instead of going out and still have to paying them
- 35:07through insurance policies? Yeah, maintenance.
- 35:09Well, yeah, I mean, it's I just wanted, I just wanted to say one
- 35:13thing touching on that before I forget.
- 35:15I would like to know if what the the players union, because I
- 35:19know that like ours, we have a representative from every team
- 35:24that goes and speaks your mind and everybody's allowed to go.
- 35:28There's there's just one Rep that basically submits and has
- 35:32to be on the calls and which I love and I was a part of it my
- 35:35entire career. So you kind of have an idea of
- 35:38what's going on, not just one player that has to get it to the
- 35:40whole league. I would be interested to find
- 35:43out if they do have a player Rep for each team and do they
- 35:49necessarily not required, but when there's a call, do they
- 35:54jump on the call, whether it's a zoom, a FaceTime, you know,
- 35:57whatever and get this knowledge out so that they can build.
- 36:01I mean, it was I was very interested in having an ex
- 36:05player be our union lead and it's obviously turned out great.
- 36:09And it's just it's tough when you see, you know, players, you
- 36:13know, being take advantage of in certain ways when they're in
- 36:16that position, but then also the players that are still playing
- 36:20and the guys that are battling. And yet you're getting all these
- 36:23execs in front of his people, lifetime deals for everything.
- 36:27So I would that that would be interesting to find out to see
- 36:30if they do. That so they do.
- 36:31So Java they do. Each team has an NFL player
- 36:33representative and at least one Co alternate player
- 36:36representative every two years is electric.
- 36:38Kind of they're saying that. Team anyways, let's go to our
- 36:41next segment sounded out they roll here.
- 36:44Jay quelling, Jay quelling that. No Jay quelling here.
- 36:46Do you mean Jacqueline? Let's sound it out.
- 36:49What you call me? Sound it out out.
- 36:54All right, guys, welcome to Sound it Out.
- 36:59Phonics, shmonics. Errol's got it.
- 37:02I. Don't know about that, but let's
- 37:03go. Let's get it going, Errol.
- 37:05As always, we have some names here.
- 37:09It's NFL day, big NFL day. We got a few NFL names.
- 37:14The first one is a brother of one of the best players in the
- 37:18NFL. Here we go.
- 37:22Sound it out. Equanimous St.
- 37:26Brown. No, it was a good try.
- 37:31It was close, Equanimous. Equanimous.
- 37:36Where did they get these names Man who gives them my name is?
- 37:39Father, as you know, was a Mr. Olympia, if you remember, from
- 37:42the receiver documentary, and he was featured on it.
- 37:46Equanimous St. Brown.
- 37:47Oh, for one, Errol, let's see if we can't get the next one.
- 37:50Let's sound it out. No.
- 37:54Champ. Affectionately known as Albert
- 37:57O. Albert Oku Bonum Oku Bonum Oku
- 38:06Bottom Where did you get these names?
- 38:11From the NFL, this guy was the back of Titan for the Broncos
- 38:14for a few years. It's Oku Okui Boonum.
- 38:19Albert Okui Boonum. Thank God I don't have to
- 38:23pronounce his name. Oh well.
- 38:26Oh for two arrow. One more though, you may get it.
- 38:29Get us up to 333 All Star type level numbers.
- 38:33Last one sounded. Oh AD tomiwa aid aid.
- 38:43Bawa man, you actually got it wrong again.
- 38:51But the first name was right. You actually got the first name
- 38:55completely right. Really tough one right there.
- 38:59Errol Addy. Tomiwa Addy.
- 39:02Barry, I'm lost with these names.
- 39:05I bet you Matt O'Leary couldn't add.
- 39:08I probably couldn't sound those names out either.
- 39:10I I mean, I guarantee you Matt couldn't sound those out.
- 39:13I'm just saying all. Right, you know what that would
- 39:16be fun? If you have 1 fish, let him just
- 39:19try one. Yeah, maybe we will.
- 39:20Maybe we will. He does.
- 39:22He does announce names, so he has to, he has to get him.
- 39:24He might have. I bet you he won't.
- 39:26I bet you he doesn't get one right.
- 39:28Let's bring Matt O'Leary in. Matt.
- 39:29What's up, buddy? Hey guys, thank you so much for
- 39:32having me tonight. Absolutely.
- 39:33Well, thank you for coming on, as always.
- 39:35I, we, we love when you come on. And if you guys don't know who
- 39:37Matt O'Leary is, well, then you guys are idiots.
- 39:40I'm just kidding. He is the host of Jets Pod and
- 39:45talking Jets. He also does an Islander show,
- 39:47sensational if you're an Islander fan, which will talk
- 39:50some Islander hockey, The big news and a lot of good moves for
- 39:53the New York Islanders. I think the Islanders are
- 39:55sitting pretty for the next three years.
- 39:57I give the Islanders 3 or 4 years and the Islanders are
- 39:59going to be cup contenders. They added some young superstars
- 40:02in this year S draft. I love what I love what Matthew
- 40:06did. In in the draft and I'm I'm
- 40:08interested to see what they do in the next two seasons and if
- 40:11they land one of those big free agents next year.
- 40:14And we all know who they are. There's one of them is kind of
- 40:16McDavid that I think he's staying with the Edmonton
- 40:19Oilers. But a lot of Ranger fans, quote
- 40:21UN quote, think that there's a possibility.
- 40:23I think they're on drugs, but there's somebody in Minnesota
- 40:25that the Islanders are gunning for and I hope there's a
- 40:30possibility for that. But Matt, I want to give you I I
- 40:33we have a segment called sounded out.
- 40:35I cannot pronounce certain names in professional sports, and I'm
- 40:40sure a lot of other people can't, so we're going to give
- 40:42you one or two names. Let me see if you can sound it
- 40:46out. Are you ready?
- 40:47Yeah, let's do it all. Right here we go.
- 40:49Let's get some music. Let's.
- 40:50Get you want the music on? Let's get the music for Matt.
- 40:52Here it is. Matt Harold just went over 3 on
- 40:56this list. I think anybody would go over 3
- 40:59on. Sound it out.
- 41:01Equanimous St. Brown.
- 41:04Yeah, that's pretty good. We're going to give him credit
- 41:06for. That Hey, wait a second.
- 41:06What is it? Equanimity is Saint Brown.
- 41:09All right, I'll give him Brown. I'll give him credit.
- 41:11All right, give him another. One next one music Back on.
- 41:13Here you go, Matt Sound. It out.
- 41:20Albert aquake unam. Aquake unam.
- 41:25All right, so this one is Okui Boonam.
- 41:31This guy is a Colts D lineman. Sounded out at a Tomila.
- 41:37Oh God. At A at a bewar egg.
- 41:41Oh, oh, I give it to all right. It is Eddie Tomiwa.
- 41:47Eddie Barre not. Not far, not not pretty.
- 41:50Close, not pretty close. I think that's I think that's a
- 41:521 1/2 out of 3. He's better.
- 41:54He was better than me at that, that's for sure.
- 41:57He's definitely better at sounding names out.
- 41:59All right. I'm not I I'm the horrible, I'm
- 42:02a horrible person. And hockey names are even worse.
- 42:05So if you put a hockey name up there, I can absolutely butcher
- 42:09a hockey name. But Matt, there's a lot to get
- 42:12into with the New York Jets. The Jets made some interesting
- 42:15moves in the offseason and one of the big moves that just
- 42:18happened over the last four, I would say the last week was the
- 42:22signings of Garrett Wilson and Sauce Garner.
- 42:26There was a lot of questions with the Garrett Wilson 1.
- 42:29Garrett Wilson is paying. He's getting top five money.
- 42:32I I don't think he's a top five wide receiver.
- 42:35We have not seen top five acrobatic, you know, wide
- 42:40receiving plays from this guy. He made one last year, which was
- 42:43incredible. But he not, he's been in the
- 42:46league for over three years. He hasn't had one season with 10
- 42:49touchdowns and he has broken 1000 yards in all three seasons.
- 42:53But just inches not make you're not breaking 1000 yards.
- 42:57I I think they overpaid for him, but sauce Gardeners very well
- 43:01deserved even though last year was an off year for him.
- 43:04Your thoughts to both signings? And why do you think The Jets
- 43:08gave Garrett Wilson that kind of money?
- 43:11Yeah. So for Garrett, I hear what
- 43:12you're saying, right. I think some of that contract is
- 43:15a little projection based. But when you look at where the
- 43:19wide receiver market is right now and you see like top guys
- 43:22like Justin Jefferson getting close to $40 million a year, I
- 43:27think they actually got okay value for Garrett when you
- 43:30especially when you consider DK Metcalf got I think 33, so a
- 43:33little bit higher too. And I think Garrett a better
- 43:36receiver than what DK is. But, you know, 32 1/2, the caps
- 43:40going up every year and, you know, unfortunately, with just
- 43:43how the contract structures go, you know, just because he was
- 43:47the next man up, he's going to be the one who's going to get,
- 43:50you know, a lot of money. And, you know, Drake London, who
- 43:53was in that same draft class, hasn't gotten paid yet.
- 43:55I'm sure he's going to beat the 32 1/2 or whatever it was for
- 43:58Garrett Wilson. So timing is really important
- 44:01with these ones. And you're right with Sauce, you
- 44:04know, he gets paid, you know, highest paid corner in the NFL,
- 44:07just 30.1 million, a little bit more than Derek Stingley got.
- 44:11I get it. He was coming off a little bit
- 44:12of a down year for his standard last year.
- 44:15But to me you can't ignore the two all Pro seasons that he had
- 44:18in his first two years. So I'm all good with both of
- 44:21these contracts and I think you want to have those two guys as
- 44:25your building block pieces going forward over the next few years.
- 44:28Yeah. I wanted to mention Sauce
- 44:29because I've always brought up the fact that I think a lot of
- 44:31his, even though he had a down year for his standards, I think
- 44:33a lot of it was lack of effort. I know, but people were
- 44:36questioning his tackling throughout the year.
- 44:37And I think still his advanced metrics were still, a lot of
- 44:40them are still very good where he was still kind of a top ten,
- 44:42top 15 corner even with those circumstances.
- 44:45Do you think that was the biggest reason or is there
- 44:46something else? Yeah, I, I look at it that way
- 44:50too. The tackling to me was the
- 44:52biggest concern with him. He had, if you look at his stats
- 44:55last year, it was really only one not so great game against
- 44:58Tennessee. I think he gave up like 97 yards
- 45:00and a touchdown in that one. But other than that, he pretty
- 45:03much was locked down in coverage.
- 45:06I know a lot of people want to see him turn, you know, create
- 45:08more turnovers, and I think that's probably the next step in
- 45:11his development and hopefully something that, you know, his
- 45:14head coach, former cornerback Aaron Glenn, can help him with,
- 45:17you know, improving and creating more turnovers.
- 45:19But I agree, I think even, you know, to his standard, he
- 45:22wasn't, you know, a top three guy, but he was still a top ten
- 45:24corner. And, you know, you have two
- 45:26first team all pro seasons, you're going to get paid as the
- 45:28top guy. So I think you're on the money
- 45:31with that one. Matt, what do you think how
- 45:33important this year is for Jermaine Johnson?
- 45:35Obviously we've seen the money they've given on that side of
- 45:37the ball. Do you think like this is a make
- 45:40or break year because they picked up the extra series
- 45:42contracts through 26, but do you think for the extension like
- 45:46that, how big and important obviously the numbers that
- 45:48they've they've spent on that side of the ball?
- 45:50Yeah, it's going to be a huge year for him, especially coming
- 45:53off the Achilles injury. I think you just you want to see
- 45:56where he's at in the recovery. He's going to start on the PUP
- 45:59list, which not all that surprised with if they're going
- 46:02to take it slow with him. He seems, you know, on social
- 46:05media he's putting out videos of him training and he says he's
- 46:07ready to go. But, you know, I would expect
- 46:10them to take it easy with him at the beginning of the year just
- 46:14because that's such a devastating injury, especially
- 46:16for a defensive lineman where using so much torque to get off
- 46:19the line of scrimmage and, you know, beat the snap count.
- 46:21So it might take him a few weeks, but it is a huge year for
- 46:25him because, you know, it's year 4.
- 46:27He'd be going into next year, year five of the rookie deal,
- 46:30the last year of his rookie contract.
- 46:32So if he has a Goodyear, I do think he would be someone that
- 46:35they look to extend, but it's going to be really depended on
- 46:39the health and how you know he comes back from this injury.
- 46:42We are talking to the host of Just Jets Pod and talking Jets
- 46:47Show. Matt O'leary's been on a show.
- 46:49He's a big Jets guy, he's a Big Islander guy.
- 46:51And we're talking Jets football right now.
- 46:54And Aaron Glenn to me was an important signing for the New
- 46:57York Jets. And The Jets over the years
- 47:00they've reached when it came to coaching.
- 47:02And I'll say this, Robert Sala was not a Jet.
- 47:05Rex Ryan's father obviously was a coach for the New York Jets,
- 47:08but he wasn't a Jet. Todd Bowles was a Washington
- 47:12commander. We could go on and on.
- 47:14And The Jets coaches over the years, they were not Jets.
- 47:16Facts are facts. This guy was drafted by The
- 47:20Jets. This guy was a pro ball player
- 47:22for The Jets. In four years, he was one of the
- 47:23top five corners in all the football.
- 47:26The last Jets. And we we talked about it the
- 47:29the three Jets that you think about over the years that The
- 47:32Jets have drafted, obviously Darrelle Revis.
- 47:35Now you have source Garner and Aaron Glenn.
- 47:38Now he is the head coach. They should have hired him,
- 47:40hired him when when he was getting interviewed.
- 47:43When Robert Sala got hired, they went the Robert Sala route
- 47:46because of what he did with the 49ers.
- 47:47It was a bad move as Bambi was a deer in the headlights as we
- 47:51speak about he's back with San Francisco.
- 47:53What kind of coach do you believe Aaron Glenn is going to
- 47:57be with the New York Jets? What does he bring to the table,
- 48:00which other coaches haven't done over the years?
- 48:04To me, the first word that I think of with Aaron Glenn is
- 48:07intensity. I just think, you know, anytime
- 48:08you hear him talk and you get those behind the scenes, you
- 48:12know, looks at how he's talking with the team, he comes across
- 48:15as very intense. And you know, I would still
- 48:17categorize him as a player's coach and Robert Sala was as
- 48:20well. But Robert Sala wanted to be
- 48:22everyone's buddy. And I don't think that's really
- 48:24the approach that Aaron Glenn's going to take here.
- 48:26What I like about him is something that you mentioned,
- 48:28right? This is a guy who was drafted by
- 48:29The Jets, played here and he was a part of The Jets, one of The
- 48:33Jets biggest turnarounds in their franchise history, right?
- 48:35Like they go from a bottom feeder team with Rich Coatside
- 48:39as their head coach, Bill Parcells gets hired and they go
- 48:42on a run, you know, in 98. And that kind of set the
- 48:45foundation for the success in the early 2000s.
- 48:48And, you know, he was there when they were at their bottom and he
- 48:51was able to see it get better progressively year over year
- 48:54until they finally make that AFC championship game in 98.
- 48:57So with the experience that he had, one under Bill Parcells,
- 49:01but two then as a player here with The Jets, I think he knows
- 49:05what it takes to win in New York, which is really important.
- 49:08I don't. I don't know if Robert Sala or
- 49:10Todd Bowles or Adam Gase really knew what they were getting into
- 49:13when coming here, but you certainly don't have those
- 49:16concerns with a guy like Aaron Glenn.
- 49:18So what are your what was your thought with a lot of the draft
- 49:20picks? A lot of people were saying that
- 49:21they made a mistake passing on Tyler Warren.
- 49:23They draft Armand Membu, who I think is a really good counter
- 49:26to Fashanu. Like I think they're two very
- 49:27opposite styles, but they make it work.
- 49:29Mason Taylor, the second round pick, I was a big fan of Malachi
- 49:32more the safety they got in the fourth round.
- 49:34Like what were your thoughts with some of the values they got
- 49:36in this draft? Yeah, I really liked the
- 49:39approach they took early on, right.
- 49:40Like there was a debate and it was a fair side if you wanted
- 49:44them to take Tyler Warren because head end was such a
- 49:46position of of need for this team.
- 49:49But you know, finishing the offensive line with Armand
- 49:51Membu, it makes sense, right? Like this is a team that wants
- 49:54to be, you know, a run heavy dominant, you know, intense
- 49:58football team. And Armand Membu is like that's
- 50:01all the qualities that he has. He's going to be a dominant
- 50:03force in the run game. That's really his strength.
- 50:06And then you get Mason Taylor in the second round to, you know, I
- 50:09really like the receiving production that he had at at LSU
- 50:12and another one with NFL lineage, right.
- 50:15His dad, Jason Taylor, had a long NFL career.
- 50:18So as long as they came away, in my opinion, with a with a right
- 50:22tackle and tight end in the first two rounds, I was going to
- 50:25be happy with it. They went offensive tackle first
- 50:27and then tight end. I think, you know, Taylor in the
- 50:29second round was good value. And you mentioned more on day
- 50:33three. I think that was my favorite
- 50:34pick on day three. Some of the other picks I
- 50:37thought were, you know, a little bit of a head scratcher like
- 50:39Arian Smith, the wide receiver goes, you know, a few rounds
- 50:42earlier than I think anyone was expecting him to go.
- 50:45And then they take the two guys from Miami at the end of the
- 50:48draft. But you know Malachi Moore,
- 50:49especially at strong safety, he's going to compete for a
- 50:52starting job in training camp. Yeah.
- 50:54So we got training camp. I'm glad you brought that up a
- 50:56nice Segway. What do you think the goal of
- 50:59this training camp, obviously with Aaron again at the head and
- 51:02you know, bringing these guys? What do you think the goal is
- 51:05for something like this with the kind of creating a nucleus with
- 51:09a head coach and and certain things like that?
- 51:12Because I I get it's not a long time, but there's value to it
- 51:15and getting know each other and what is expected.
- 51:17So what do you, what do you think one of their things or
- 51:19multiple things that they're going to focus on in this camp?
- 51:23Yeah, I think, you know, especially when it's a new
- 51:25coaching staff like you, you mentioned and they have a new
- 51:27quarterback this year with Justin Fields coming in.
- 51:30So the biggest thing that I'll be looking for in training camp
- 51:33is you know how the installation of the offense is going.
- 51:36We know with the defense there's a lot of talent on that side of
- 51:39the ball. Aaron Glenn's a defensive minded
- 51:41head coach. Steve Wilkes, veteran defensive
- 51:44coordinator, I'm not as concerned on that side.
- 51:47But you know, Justin Fields, he has to a lot to prove this year.
- 51:50This is probably his last chance to prove that he could be a
- 51:53starter in the NFL. And you have a first time
- 51:55offensive coordinator in Tanner Angstrand.
- 51:57So the thing I'll be keeping my eye on is just how well it seems
- 52:01like the offense is adapting. Because anytime you're
- 52:04installing a new offense, that's hard enough, but when you insert
- 52:07a new quarterback into the fold to who has to build chemistry
- 52:10with these receivers here, that that takes a little bit of time.
- 52:14He was never coached very well in Chicago.
- 52:16He was never coached very well in Pittsburgh.
- 52:19I'm no offense to Mike Tomlin. He doesn't know how to develop
- 52:21quarterbacks. Let's be honest.
- 52:23He had Kenny Pickett there. Did he develop him?
- 52:24No, he didn't even he didn't develop Ben Roethlisberger.
- 52:28So he had a great quarterback at Ben.
- 52:30He did win a championship with Ben, good for him.
- 52:33But the guy has never gotten over the hump with the
- 52:35quarterbacks. As a matter of fact, eight years
- 52:37in a row getting knocked out in the first round.
- 52:39So we all know what the Pittsburgh Steelers are.
- 52:42The, the, I think Justin Fields has been really thrown to the
- 52:45the wolves over the last couple of years, not getting a chance
- 52:49that Chicago Chicago Bears are an organization that added some
- 52:52pieces. They added more over there.
- 52:54But he never stayed healthy and never gave him a good offensive
- 52:58line. The offensive line was
- 52:59absolutely garbage. So Justin Fields is, is a
- 53:02running quarterback and he really wasn't coached right to,
- 53:06to. We seen Lamar Jackson.
- 53:07Look what look at the Lamar Jackson we've seen over the
- 53:10years really developed up into a pass happy quarterback when he
- 53:13came into the league from Louisville, what was he was a
- 53:16running quarterback that can throw, has a gun for an arm, but
- 53:19couldn't complete passes. Now look at him.
- 53:21He's one of the best passers in the league.
- 53:22If if Justin Fields is put on a on on the right roster with the
- 53:27right coach, I think he could develop.
- 53:29And by the way, Aaron Glenn, I heard before and I knew Aaron
- 53:32Glenn was going to get hired because there were stories
- 53:34coming out that Aaron Glenn, when he went in his first
- 53:36interview, they asked him where would you go for quarterback?
- 53:40And he said the first move I would, I would have, this is
- 53:43what I've heard from an inside source.
- 53:45If I were to make a move, I want Justin Fields.
- 53:48I played, I played against Justin Fields.
- 53:50I think he would be a good fit over here the way we want to run
- 53:52the ball. And what did The Jets do once,
- 53:55once the free agency market opened up and I called it the
- 53:58first move they were going to make was bring in Justin Fields.
- 54:01So I expected that the guy that I want to talk to talk to you
- 54:04about was Will McDonald. Will McDonald had a sensational
- 54:08year taking over for Jermaine John, Jermaine Johnson, who went
- 54:12down your thoughts to what this guy could because a lot of
- 54:15people took shots at the the thought of bringing him in,
- 54:20drafting him as the 15th pick in the first round.
- 54:22Some people thought he was a second round, early second round
- 54:25to Alan. What do you think Will McDonald
- 54:27could be as a stretch defensive end in this league?
- 54:31I think he's immensely talented and we saw it last year as the
- 54:34pass rusher. What excites me about him this
- 54:37year is he finally put on a little bit more weight.
- 54:41I think he added 15 lbs in the offseason, which he could use it
- 54:451 and I don't think he's going to lose the speed off the edge.
- 54:48That's his calling card, but he wasn't very good against the
- 54:50run. That was part of the reason why
- 54:52he wasn't on the field as much earlier in his career.
- 54:55But the added weight should help him shutting blocks and being a
- 54:59little bit more of a factor in the run game.
- 55:00So honestly, you know, entering his third year in the league,
- 55:04this could be someone who's becoming a more complete edge
- 55:07player, which again is important.
- 55:09It's nice to have someone who can give you 10 plus sacks.
- 55:11But if they're a liability in the run, are they going to be
- 55:15playing on early downs? Probably not as much.
- 55:17So I would expect to snap count to increase a lot this year and
- 55:22I'm very confident in him taking another step in his development.
- 55:26So more sacks, better against the run, and just a better
- 55:29overall player in year 3. So this offense is now coming
- 55:32into this kind of Lions mold offense and Aaron Glenn
- 55:34mentioned he wanted Justin Fields.
- 55:35He's played against him, actually played very well
- 55:37against the Lions defense a lot of the time.
- 55:39And obviously Breece Hall has been a feature running back at
- 55:41certain points, but the Lions always did the running back by
- 55:44committee with Montgomery and Gibbs and making that kind of
- 55:46thing work. Braylon Allen, second round or
- 55:47third round pick last year, Like do you expect that kind of
- 55:50approach offense to be similar to the Lions or do you think
- 55:53it'll be kind of their own niche still?
- 55:55Yeah, I do think it's going to be similar.
- 55:57You mentioned the two backs in Gibbs in Montgomery.
- 56:00I think The Jets are going to try to use Breece Hall and
- 56:02Braylon Allen as their own version of that duo, especially
- 56:06when they get down by the goal line.
- 56:08I would I would think that Braylon Allen as the bigger back
- 56:10is going to come in in the short yardage situations.
- 56:13And, you know, I thought earlier on in the season he looked good
- 56:17and there were points where it looked like he was taking a step
- 56:19forward and then kind of got a little bit quiet in the
- 56:21second-half of the year. You know, I know Breece probably
- 56:23didn't have the season that he wanted to last year.
- 56:27I really think a big reason for that was the offensive scheme
- 56:30just in general wasn't very good.
- 56:32And you know, the offensive line coach, Keith Carter, and how
- 56:35they schemed up the run game, I look at it as a really big
- 56:37weakness. And, you know, they're no longer
- 56:39here. It's a new offensive staff.
- 56:41And, you know, I'm still holding on to my Breece Hall stock.
- 56:43I know he's going to last year of his deal.
- 56:45We'll see if they extend them or what they want to do there, but
- 56:48I I think you could have a big season in this offense.
- 56:51Yeah, I'm glad you brought Hall up because and, and as we talked
- 56:54about Jermaine Johnson earlier, when, when you're getting into
- 56:58like, you know, different offenses and especially in the
- 57:03last year of your contract, do you feel like it's they put more
- 57:06pressure to to perform or to like, hey, what can I do to help
- 57:11this team win? Because you're going to run a
- 57:12double back set at some point. And especially going into your
- 57:15last, your last contract year, basically.
- 57:18I mean, that's tough to do any time because you do put pressure
- 57:21on yourself. But do you think it makes it a
- 57:23little harder going into it and trying to learn a new offense?
- 57:27Yeah, I would say that it definitely does because that's
- 57:29just, you know, an added extra factor weighing on his mind,
- 57:33right? Like there's no guarantee for
- 57:35him. And injuries have unfortunately
- 57:37been, you know, a part of his career through the first few
- 57:40years of his career, he's been very banged up.
- 57:42So, you know, there's nothing guaranteed.
- 57:44He needs to have a big season in order to cash in on that payday.
- 57:47But, you know, also, and then you had on top of that, too,
- 57:49like you said, he's learning a new offense, which, you know,
- 57:52isn't easy. But as I was saying with, you
- 57:55know, the, the new scheme that they're implementing, I, I think
- 57:58they're going to get back to running more of a wide zone
- 58:01rushing attack, which kind of fits his skill set more so than
- 58:04just running up up the middle inside zone all day.
- 58:07I don't think was really, you know, the the best way to get
- 58:10the most out of him and +2. I think he'll be used more as a
- 58:14pass catcher, which he he showed signs last year that he could do
- 58:18that very well. So yeah, I do, you know, to
- 58:21answer your question, I do absolutely think that, you know,
- 58:23the, the contract is something that could be weighing on him
- 58:26and it does add, you know, edit pressure.
- 58:28I want to get into the New York Islanders.
- 58:29They had a sensational offseason.
- 58:31Their draft was what First of all, I love what the NFL, I'm
- 58:36sorry, the NHL did. Having the draft on television,
- 58:38actually watching the balls fall to the New York Islanders, how
- 58:41it felt. I actually watched your podcast
- 58:45after it all happened and I saw how excited you were and I saw
- 58:48that you wanted Higgins or Mesa. I was, I was looking at that
- 58:53too. But Schaefer is just that kind
- 58:55of talent. I I even made a bet with
- 58:56somebody to take him to dinner because I just didn't think that
- 58:59the Islanders were going to go with Schaefer.
- 59:01And I was reading stories about how he interviewed at the the
- 59:04combine and, and how much they love this kid, what he did, you
- 59:08know, the back end of his mother passing away and as a young man,
- 59:13how he's growing so fast. He's 1718 years old.
- 59:16And they say he's he's like a 2627 year old.
- 59:19This guy could be the future captain of the the New York
- 59:22Islanders. And then making that trade,
- 59:24trading one of their young defenseman.
- 59:26And Noah Dobson, I was at his draft.
- 59:28I interviewed him when he was drafted where everybody thought
- 59:31he was the future, future for their defense.
- 59:32He's one of the better offensive defenseman in the league.
- 59:35As soon as they went with Schaefer, I knew they were going
- 59:37to move from no adoption because they didn't want to pay him nine
- 59:40and a half million dollars. And then there were stories
- 59:42coming out. I I heard a story that at 4:00
- 59:45with Utah sitting there, the Islanders reached out to Utah
- 59:48because they wanted to trade up after trading no adoption.
- 59:52They had, they were sitting at I think 16 and 17.
- 59:54They wanted to move those picks and move somebody else to move
- 59:59up to four to get James Hagan and the Utah wanted Barzell.
- 1:00:04There was no way they were training Barzell.
- 1:00:06That was the story. They were not doing that.
- 1:00:09Your thoughts to the Islanders draft?
- 1:00:11Especially in the first round where I think slam dunk the
- 1:00:14first round and they added another defenseman at #17 who a
- 1:00:17lot of people think is the steal of the draft.
- 1:00:21Yeah, I really loved the approach that they took.
- 1:00:24And you're right, you know what, my initial reaction, I thought,
- 1:00:26OK, great. Like get a goal scorer here,
- 1:00:28James Hagan's local kid. That would be a great story.
- 1:00:31Or Michael Misa scored, you know, like 60 goals this past
- 1:00:35year. But the more the process went
- 1:00:38on, and whether it was the interviews or the stories that
- 1:00:41came out with Matthew Schaefer, it felt like there was a bit of
- 1:00:44a transition to, OK, like, this kid's the obvious number one.
- 1:00:48And from there, like, he's such a good skater.
- 1:00:51Or, you know, you pulled up the video right here of him going
- 1:00:52coast to coast. That's such an important part of
- 1:00:55today's game for these defensemen.
- 1:00:57You have to be able to get the puck out of your own.
- 1:00:59And it was an issue that the Islanders had or have had for a
- 1:01:02really long time. And he's going to help with
- 1:01:05that. I think he's someone, you know,
- 1:01:06as a number one overall pick, that he's going to be a number
- 1:01:09one defenceman sooner rather than later.
- 1:01:11And then plus on top of that, after you trade Noah Dobson, you
- 1:01:14mentioned that you had, you know, Victor Eklund, who a lot
- 1:01:17of people had in their top ten, fell to them at 16.
- 1:01:20And then Keyshawn Aitchison, he he's just a massive human being.
- 1:01:24He throws the body around. He's not afraid to get physical.
- 1:01:28So they add, you know, two additional prospects in.
- 1:01:31Then you get into the Brock Nelson trade from in season.
- 1:01:34You have another first round pick next year.
- 1:01:36So you have two firsts next year, three from this year.
- 1:01:39Really feels like the Islanders are going with the youth
- 1:01:42approach which is desperately needed.
- 1:01:44Yeah. I want to ask you like kind of
- 1:01:45trading a lot of those veteran pieces because I have contracts
- 1:01:47that didn't seem like they were very movable.
- 1:01:50Obviously enters Lee is the biggest one that's probably
- 1:01:52going to be very hard. But then you got the other two
- 1:01:54defense from a Pelican pool lock that have had any injury issues
- 1:01:56in recent years. Do you see this front office
- 1:01:58exploring trades for a lot of those veteran guys this
- 1:02:00offseason or you think it's more in season maybe with them?
- 1:02:04Yeah, I think the two guys that I would look at in season are
- 1:02:07and there's Lee who you mentioned and also JG Pajo.
- 1:02:10I feel like there's been a lot of interest in Pajo's name going
- 1:02:14back to last trade deadline. And you know, you look at the
- 1:02:18deadline, teams are always looking to trade for a depth
- 1:02:21scoring and guys who win face offs and are playoff performers.
- 1:02:25And that's, you know, JG Pejot to a tee.
- 1:02:27And you have Kyle Ritchie, you know, the prospect that you got
- 1:02:30in the Brock Nelson trade, who's knocking on the door.
- 1:02:33If he's ready at some point this year to get called up to the
- 1:02:35NHL, they're going to need to open up a spot in that forward
- 1:02:38group in the The next man out, I would think would be JG Pejot
- 1:02:42via trade. I'd like to get your perspective
- 1:02:45because you've covered both football and hockey.
- 1:02:48Do you? Do you prefer one or the other,
- 1:02:50or do you like the dynamics of how the sports are similar but
- 1:02:54different? Yeah, for for me, I've been into
- 1:02:59football a lot longer and that's been my #1 sport for a lot
- 1:03:02longer that I've covered. So I just feel like I'm more
- 1:03:04comfortable with that. But I, I think the Stanley Cup
- 1:03:08playoffs are the, the best playoffs in all of sports.
- 1:03:11So I'm a little biased for that because I cover it, but it's
- 1:03:15just the intensity is really what I love about.
- 1:03:17And you could say in both sports too, in football and in hockey.
- 1:03:21But I think what sets hockey apart is what they what happens
- 1:03:26to come playoff time and how it becomes a different game.
- 1:03:29I think it's an underrated sport.
- 1:03:31You know, like, football's the number one here in the country
- 1:03:33and a lot of people are basketball and baseball fans and
- 1:03:35hockey's a little bit under the radar, but man, when it gets to
- 1:03:37playoff time there, there's nothing better than playoffs.
- 1:03:40Don't you age like 7 years every playoffs just because it's so
- 1:03:43long in the intensity of it? Like I get exhausted, I only
- 1:03:46have to cover it. Yeah, no, 100%.
- 1:03:49Like when the Islanders were going on their, you know, deep
- 1:03:51runs in 2020 and 2021. It felt like, like you said,
- 1:03:55losing years off your life, watching those, watching those
- 1:03:58games and over. Sleeping Lou, That's what we
- 1:04:00called them Sleeping Lou. The Lightning took up the
- 1:04:04Islanders on the Rangers twice in like 7 years.
- 1:04:06You know, Matt, it's funny every time I'm around, every time I've
- 1:04:09been to an Islander, you know, event and I've been to quite a
- 1:04:12few of them, I get invited because obviously I host a radio
- 1:04:16show. I'm an Islanders guy and I'm the
- 1:04:18voice of the Islanders on one O 3.9.
- 1:04:20So I, we do the pregame shows for them.
- 1:04:22So it's funny because when I go to these events, you, you see
- 1:04:26all the old Islanders. Nystrom's always there and Bobby
- 1:04:30is so nice, so gracious. So I love having a conversation
- 1:04:33with him. Lou, that was a year ago.
- 1:04:36I went to an event. Lou shows up, he's so small and
- 1:04:39he, he's so weird. He's standing in the middle of
- 1:04:42once he walks in, he's standing right there.
- 1:04:44And you would think that everybody would be running to
- 1:04:46Lou Lamorello because he's obviously he's a Hall of Famer.
- 1:04:51He's won 3 Stanley Cups with the New Jersey Devils.
- 1:04:54I mean, he was the face AKA of the New York Islanders and
- 1:04:57nobody gave a crap. And I went up to Lou and I'll
- 1:05:00never forget the story. And I walked up to him and I
- 1:05:03said, listen, I I don't want to mention any of the players that
- 1:05:05you brought in, but Sarokin's expecting contract.
- 1:05:08Where are you going with that? He says, well, what do you think
- 1:05:10I'm going to do with it? I said, I think you're going to
- 1:05:12sign him. He's like, well, that's a good
- 1:05:14bet. So I mean, where did you get
- 1:05:16your information? He was being a smart ass.
- 1:05:18So I said, so I started being a smart ass.
- 1:05:20Damn. I said, well, how do you like
- 1:05:21the trades over the last couple of years, trading all those
- 1:05:24picks and not landing or not bringing in a Stanley Cup like
- 1:05:27you, you, you thought you were going to do back-to-back years.
- 1:05:30And he says, well, you know, you, you win some, you lose
- 1:05:32some. I say no, Dion Islanders lose
- 1:05:34some, a lot of some. So and he looked at me and he
- 1:05:37was like, wow, you're, you're, you're a sensational person.
- 1:05:39Maybe I should give you another interview.
- 1:05:41I said, maybe you should've. And I walked away from him.
- 1:05:43So I and nobody cared that he was there.
- 1:05:46So I go back to the Islanders now and I look at the
- 1:05:49organization they brought in Matthew Darsh.
- 1:05:51Now I, I like that he's been a successful assistant over there
- 1:05:57with Tampa. He won a Stanley Cup.
- 1:05:59I he's, he's been with an organization that knows how to
- 1:06:02win a winning culture, very young talented team over the
- 1:06:07years. Now they've become a veteran
- 1:06:09team. What are your thoughts?
- 1:06:11When I, I was listening to Holland, I, I heard Holland's
- 1:06:14name being brought up all these different old, you know,
- 1:06:16managers or GM's and, and I said, what are the Islanders
- 1:06:20thinking? If they bring one of these
- 1:06:22idiots and it's, it's like bringing another sleeping loo
- 1:06:24in, but they went with the younger guy.
- 1:06:26When, when they brought in Matthew, what were your
- 1:06:28thoughts? Were you happy?
- 1:06:29Were you excited? What type of guy do you think
- 1:06:32Matthew Dodge brings to brings to the table for the New York
- 1:06:34Islanders? Yeah, I was definitely excited
- 1:06:37like you. I didn't want to go down like
- 1:06:39the older retread route with the general manager just because it
- 1:06:43would have felt too similar to what they had with Lulu
- 1:06:45Amarillo. And you know, Darsh is a younger
- 1:06:48guy. This is his first shot at being
- 1:06:50AGM, but was with an organization in Tampa Bay that's
- 1:06:53been so good for so long. I think you're obviously hoping
- 1:06:56that he takes some of, you know, what he's learned there and
- 1:06:59applies it to the island. There's what I like is how much
- 1:07:02he's put an emphasis on speed and defense that any time he
- 1:07:06talks, he talks about speed and defense and you know, the
- 1:07:09defense has gotten worse over the last few years.
- 1:07:11That was the I on this calling card in the Barry Trotz era, but
- 1:07:14that's kind of gone away and speed's been an issue for a long
- 1:07:17time. So this off season I think they
- 1:07:20did a lot to try to get faster and play a more modern style of
- 1:07:24hockey, which is which is good. But I I think what I like about
- 1:07:28Darsh is just he understands where the game is going.
- 1:07:32He didn't really give out too many long term contracts outside
- 1:07:34of Alex Romanoff. So he's giving himself some
- 1:07:36flexibility and he's trying to make the team younger.
- 1:07:39So I think it's exciting times for the Islanders.
- 1:07:41Romanoff really proved himself to be a first line defensive
- 1:07:44player last year when he stays healthy.
- 1:07:47We we all know why Montreal drafted him now.
- 1:07:49He was a first round talent. We he he's got the ability, he's
- 1:07:53very young still, he's 26 years old, so he's quite capable of
- 1:07:56being a star in this league and and being one of the faces of
- 1:07:59the Islanders defense. He's going to help out Shaffer
- 1:08:01when he comes to the league and he'll probably be up sometime
- 1:08:04this year. He's a first.
- 1:08:05He's the number one pick. So I expect to see a young guy,
- 1:08:08the young kid come up and and develop in the NHL.
- 1:08:11The the one thing I could say, and there's a couple of guys
- 1:08:13that I want to see and I, I love talking hockey with a guy that
- 1:08:16knows Islander hockey because I know Islander hockey, because I
- 1:08:20speak about the Islanders. I know Jabba could care less in
- 1:08:23certain ways. I I mean, he knows some Rangers
- 1:08:27that he actually. Was apartment based with.
- 1:08:31But Cole Eiserman is a guy I, I want to see.
- 1:08:36The Islanders drafted him a couple of years ago.
- 1:08:38He was I think the the 19th or 21st pick.
- 1:08:41He's he was 17 when they drafted him.
- 1:08:43I think he's 19, going to be 20 this year.
- 1:08:46He's a guy that we, we were talking about Ricci and a guy
- 1:08:48that is going to be called up sometime this year.
- 1:08:51Cole is still playing college hockey.
- 1:08:53I I think Cole has a chance after this year to go to the AHL
- 1:08:57and, and maybe even be called up sometime at the end of the
- 1:09:00season, maybe early next season. Your thoughts to him and and
- 1:09:05where do the Islanders go with some of these old players?
- 1:09:08I don't want to see any of these old players anymore.
- 1:09:10I, I, I want to see Casey Zeke is gone.
- 1:09:13I like we, we saw that Manny Martin just retired.
- 1:09:16Thank God he retired. I want to see him on the ice
- 1:09:18anymore. All right, Clutterbuck finally
- 1:09:21came out and retired. Thank God, I love you Claudie,
- 1:09:24but I don't want to see him on the ice anymore.
- 1:09:26And the Pajo thing, I get rid of that contract.
- 1:09:30I can't stand watching. He's a great face.
- 1:09:32He's a great face off guy. How many goals has this guy
- 1:09:35scored since he's been an Islander?
- 1:09:37I mean, seriously, it's it's absolutely pathetic.
- 1:09:39So the Cole Iseman thing and all the other things that I just
- 1:09:42went through just absolutely sickens me.
- 1:09:45Yeah, so on Eiserman, I, I really am expecting big things
- 1:09:48from him in college. He he showed it last year.
- 1:09:51And what I noticed most with him, his goals came in big
- 1:09:56spots. It felt like every time his team
- 1:09:59was needed a goal, it was Cole Eiserman who's the one who's
- 1:10:01coming up with it, which I don't know.
- 1:10:03I I again, I kind of like that from a young player rising to
- 1:10:06the occasion and, you know, playing in those tournaments at
- 1:10:09at the collegiate level too. Like that's, I know it's not the
- 1:10:13NHL, but that's high end hockey right there.
- 1:10:15And there's a lot of pressure for those kids.
- 1:10:17So I, I think, like you said, maybe the end of this year,
- 1:10:21depending on when his season in college ends, he might get a
- 1:10:25look, but he he's another one who's knocking on the door.
- 1:10:28And I think he has, you know, top six upside with the goal
- 1:10:30scoring ability. He should be someone who plays
- 1:10:32on a first or second line, maybe a winger for Matt Barzal
- 1:10:35finally, who could score some goals that that'd be nice to
- 1:10:38have. So I would absolutely love that
- 1:10:42on some of the older guys. I'm with you, Pajo.
- 1:10:44I would be shocked if he made it past the trade deadline this
- 1:10:47year. I think it's really going to
- 1:10:49depend on how fast Cal Ritchie is developing and ready to make
- 1:10:53that call up. And you know, there's some other
- 1:10:55veterans that I'm sure they're looking to move to.
- 1:10:57Suzique is one of them. I will say this, and if you're
- 1:11:00Islander fan and Islander fans listening to the show right now,
- 1:11:03you shouldn't really question what the Islanders have done
- 1:11:05over the last month. I think the Islanders have slam
- 1:11:08dunk everything. They brought in this Russian kid
- 1:11:10who everybody with. There was 8 teams gunning for
- 1:11:14him and I speedy you're better with.
- 1:11:15Chabanov. Chabanov, who I'm, I'm bad with,
- 1:11:18you know, I always pronounce his name like Chabanov or whatever
- 1:11:21the hell Chabanov is, is a guy that the Rangers were interested
- 1:11:24in, Carolina was interested in him, Las Vegas was interested in
- 1:11:28him. I I read how small he is, but
- 1:11:30speed is something that theologists are preaching this
- 1:11:33guy, a lot of people compare his skills to a Panarin, a guy that
- 1:11:37can put the puck in the net. He has a tremendous ability of
- 1:11:40finding the net. You're thoughts why he picked
- 1:11:43the Islanders? Was it Sorokin or are the
- 1:11:46Islanders trying to make this the Russian Islanders?
- 1:11:49Because there's somebody in Minnesota.
- 1:11:51There are stories coming out that is very intrigued with the
- 1:11:54Islanders organization and what they've done so far this
- 1:11:57offseason. Yeah, it certainly feels that
- 1:11:59way with Maxim Chabanov this year.
- 1:12:02Maxim Siflakov last year comes over from the KHL.
- 1:12:05You have Romanov, Sorokin, Varlamov to a lot of Russians,
- 1:12:09so hopefully that leads, you've been hinting at it, to curl
- 1:12:12Caprezov in the offseason. That'd be a lot of fun if he
- 1:12:15comes over from Minnesota. But yeah, Chabanov is a really
- 1:12:19interesting one. He's small, so some questions on
- 1:12:22if his game will translate to the NHL level, which is much
- 1:12:26more physical than it is over in the KHL, but there's no doubt
- 1:12:30that the goal scoring's there. He's a playmaker too.
- 1:12:33He honestly got some comparisons to Co capris of which would be
- 1:12:37great. Why not pair the two of them
- 1:12:38together? But he's someone that I think
- 1:12:42maybe starts on the third line but if plays well gets bumped up
- 1:12:45into the top 6. You know, I, I never mentioned
- 1:12:49Caprisoff because I want to throw myself under the bus
- 1:12:52because I always jinx my teams and they never get the guy.
- 1:12:55But I think Caprisoff, if he leaves Minnesota, I, I, I don't
- 1:12:59see any other team where he wants to go and play besides the
- 1:13:02Islanders. I think the Islanders are really
- 1:13:04building it where there's, if he has any interest.
- 1:13:08And the story is what I've been reading, if Minnesota doesn't
- 1:13:11get this deal done before, before the preseason starts,
- 1:13:16he's not signing in the middle of the season.
- 1:13:18So he will go to free agency. And they, they believe that if
- 1:13:22he goes to free agency, he is not signing back.
- 1:13:25Even if they get the, even if they can give him the 8th year,
- 1:13:27he will not sign back with Minnesota and he will go to free
- 1:13:30agency and go to the highest bidder.
- 1:13:32And the Islanders are opening, they're, they're making it
- 1:13:36available where the Islanders are going to be able to offer
- 1:13:38him 11 or $12 million, which could very much be the, the goal
- 1:13:41scorer they needed, the superstar they needed to add to
- 1:13:45their top, top 2 lines where they could be a success story.
- 1:13:49I'm going to tell you something. I, I want to ask you because you
- 1:13:52know a lot about hockey and I'm, I'm an Islander guy too, Matthew
- 1:13:55Barzell and I, I love Matt. I, I think he's the best skater,
- 1:13:59second best skater right now in the NHL, right behind Connor
- 1:14:01McDavid. He is an unbelievable skater.
- 1:14:03I've never seen somebody gracious.
- 1:14:05Gracious as and fast and so good on the edges.
- 1:14:09He reminds me of Alexei Kovolov. Me and Mikey, see, I went back
- 1:14:11and forth on the phone. You, if you don't know, Mikey
- 1:14:14was my old partner on my show and we used to argue all the
- 1:14:17time about certain players. He's a big hockey guy.
- 1:14:19Alexei Kovolov, if you look at his career, it's almost
- 1:14:23identical to Matthew Barzell. It's it's now Alexei had over
- 1:14:27300 and semi goals and Matthew Barzell doesn't have anything
- 1:14:30close to that. But the way they play their
- 1:14:32game, speed, puck handling skills, but could never find the
- 1:14:35net. It took him.
- 1:14:36I think he had one season with 40 goals.
- 1:14:39The rest of the seasons I think he had 130 goal season.
- 1:14:42That was it. Matthew Barsell hasn't even hit
- 1:14:44thirty goals yet. What what are your thoughts to
- 1:14:47that comparison? Alexa Kovalov to Matthew Barsell
- 1:14:49and I said that Daniel Smith and he says, wow, that's a good
- 1:14:51comparison. So.
- 1:14:54Yeah, I do. I do like that.
- 1:14:56That's one that I haven't heard before.
- 1:14:57So this is the first time that I'm hearing it.
- 1:14:59But I do think it makes sense, right, Because you look at him
- 1:15:01as more of a playmaker exactly like what Matthew Barzell is.
- 1:15:05You kind of delete it out there. He hasn't hit thirty goals.
- 1:15:07That would be the the nice next step.
- 1:15:10But I think he needs to shoot more in order to get there.
- 1:15:12He's he's always looking for the pass first and that's fine.
- 1:15:15If he has someone who could pot 3540 goals on his line, they
- 1:15:19don't have someone like that to put with him.
- 1:15:21So it gets a little frustrating at times.
- 1:15:23And with the turnovers, too, like the pucks on his stick a
- 1:15:25lot. So he's kind of prone to those
- 1:15:27turnovers. He's such a driver of offense,
- 1:15:29though. I think he's, you know, a useful
- 1:15:31piece for this team. But I like that comp.
- 1:15:34It's not one that I've heard of or or thought of before, but I
- 1:15:37think it's a good one. Well, Matt, you got to invite us
- 1:15:39on the show. Yeah, we we can, I can hook you
- 1:15:42up with some hockey information, especially Islanders, because me
- 1:15:45and Speedy Speedy's actually when it comes to statistics and
- 1:15:48hockey. I mean, his knowledge in hockey
- 1:15:51is probably just as good as any sport he plays in these fantasy
- 1:15:55leagues. He's just absolutely putrid.
- 1:15:57So he's just so bad at it. Hold on, He's bad to.
- 1:16:01To put in perspective, partner Mikey, see that he mentioned we
- 1:16:05actually played. I didn't play last year, but we
- 1:16:07actually played in a 20 team category league for hockey.
- 1:16:11So you really have to know depth players of that league.
- 1:16:13I, I just, I don't play fantasy besides football.
- 1:16:16I do play basketball too. I'm pretty good at that.
- 1:16:18But these guys, they talk so much crap.
- 1:16:21They go back and forth, Oh, look good.
- 1:16:23And then they have these, these different rules like it's APR
- 1:16:26league or it's, or make sure that you cover rebounds and all
- 1:16:29this stuff. Nobody, nobody gives me the
- 1:16:31information until I draft. And then after the draft, why
- 1:16:34don't you draft big guys? I mean, it doesn't make sense.
- 1:16:37Rebounding and, and, and you know, blocks are so very
- 1:16:40important. Then why did you say something
- 1:16:42before I drafted you idiots? So I, I don't play in hockey
- 1:16:46leagues, but I know my hockey. I, I will say this, I'm
- 1:16:49terrible. I butcher hockey names more than
- 1:16:53any other sport. My agent actually, when he
- 1:16:56listens to me talk hockey, he tells me all the time, dude, you
- 1:17:00got to, you got to figure out these names, man.
- 1:17:02You, you, you got to figure out how to pronounce these names if
- 1:17:05you want to talk hockey when it comes to if you want to work on
- 1:17:08the NHL Network. And I was like, dude, Brian,
- 1:17:10relax, Brian. If you listen to the show, I,
- 1:17:12that's why we have this segment sounded out.
- 1:17:14I just embarrassed the hell out of myself.
- 1:17:16And then, you know, you can laugh at it and we can go back
- 1:17:18to stupidity on this show. But Matt, I, I, I follow you,
- 1:17:23man. I love what you do.
- 1:17:25And we got to stay in touch. I don't know if Speedy's got
- 1:17:28your number. Let's stay let's stay in touch.
- 1:17:31We we're going to be doing some live shows in the winter time.
- 1:17:35Jabba has a couple of nice restaurants out in Manhattan and
- 1:17:40New Jersey and we're going to be doing some live shows over there
- 1:17:44and maybe some here on Long Island.
- 1:17:46Maybe one in this on a in a in on a beach.
- 1:17:49And before the summer is over, we'd love for you to come down
- 1:17:52and you know, talk a little hockey, talk a little football
- 1:17:55and have a little fun with us with some of the fans.
- 1:17:58I and, and promote your product because I, I love what you do.
- 1:18:00I'm not throwing anybody under the bus.
- 1:18:02And I know you were you, you do a lot of shows, jet shows.
- 1:18:06I think your, your show is to me.
- 1:18:08I, I respect what you say because I'm not going to throw
- 1:18:12anybody on it. There's things that people say
- 1:18:13on their show that just like, are you getting paid by The
- 1:18:16Jets? I honestly, that's what I think
- 1:18:19and I'm not going to throw any, but I'm not going to say it on
- 1:18:21the show. But I you, I think you're
- 1:18:24honest. I watch your Islander show.
- 1:18:26I support what you do with the Islanders and I gracious enough
- 1:18:30to come on our show, but also support what we do.
- 1:18:32And I just want to let you know we broke 130,000 downloads on
- 1:18:36Spotify and Apple last month. So we're we're yeah, it's, we're
- 1:18:41doing a lot of great things on this show.
- 1:18:43And Jabba, you know, since he's joined the show, it's been fun.
- 1:18:45And Jabba's learning a little bit about us as, as
- 1:18:49personalities and some of the crazy things that we do on this
- 1:18:53show, as we always do. Groba as we know it.
- 1:18:55Groba or this one? My rear end is burning.
- 1:18:58Or this blow my back out. I love Lisa Ann, We do a lot of
- 1:19:02different things on this show and we like to mess mess around
- 1:19:04with Jabba as Droba is not an athlete.
- 1:19:08Anyways, we appreciate the time. You're a sensational person and
- 1:19:12I love what you're doing. Let's stay in touch and let's
- 1:19:14get together, man. That all sounds great.
- 1:19:17Thanks again for having me guys. Really appreciate.
- 1:19:19It and by the way, when we do the Islanders this summer, this
- 1:19:22winter, when the season starts, we do every Saturday, what do we
- 1:19:25do on? Islander pregame show.
- 1:19:27Pregame show every Saturday. Let's get you on the show.
- 1:19:31I think the fans would love you can hang us out and we do out
- 1:19:34like a 25 minute take before the Islander game starts and they go
- 1:19:37to the the Islander pregames over there and we go back and
- 1:19:41forth and we argue Islander hockey.
- 1:19:43I think you'd be great and I think you'd be great for the
- 1:19:46fans to. I hear what you got to say.
- 1:19:48Yeah, that sounds awesome. I'm totally in for a Little
- 1:19:50Isles pregame action. There you go on one O 3.9 you
- 1:19:53get your, your program and all the stuff that you're doing
- 1:19:56right now on your on your product, which is sensational by
- 1:19:59the way. So we really appreciate the
- 1:20:00time. Absolutely, guys.
- 1:20:02Thanks so much. Matt O'Leary, I love Matt
- 1:20:06Speedy. When you told me Matt was going
- 1:20:08to come on the show, I'm a I'm a fan of his because he's an
- 1:20:11Islander guy and he's a Jack guy, so me and him have
- 1:20:15something in common. The only thing that I would say
- 1:20:18about Matt that I give him a lot of credit for is he says a lot
- 1:20:21of good things about his teams. I just dropped the hammer on my
- 1:20:26teams. So me and Matt would be pretty
- 1:20:29funny on a show if we went back-to-back and forth bantering
- 1:20:32about our teams because he would be the bright side of things.
- 1:20:35And I would be like, oh, the world's going to end.
- 1:20:38Yeah. What it was last year too, which
- 1:20:40is very weird, when we did the Islanders pregame show the first
- 1:20:43year in 2023, it was kind of like it was kind of a steady
- 1:20:46course throughout the season. They started slow, but they were
- 1:20:48like pretty steady after that last year, like all our pregame
- 1:20:51shows, like the first three months of the season.
- 1:20:53So it was like all like all the negative ends of the Islanders.
- 1:20:55Then they finally start making the good trades after that.
- 1:20:58So like the youth movement, like last three months or so, we
- 1:21:01didn't get to us. Matt O'Leary fantastic.
- 1:21:03Thank you Matt for joining us talking little Jets and
- 1:21:06Islanders hockey. So I love Matt.
- 1:21:08Thank you to Matt. Thank you to all the fans tuning
- 1:21:11in to us and and downloading a show on Apple and Spotify audio
- 1:21:16over 130,000 over the last, I would say the last month.
- 1:21:21Thank you to all the TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, all, all
- 1:21:26the different sectors, YouTube, Spotify, Apple video, all the
- 1:21:30guys, all the girls, all the gals following us on all the
- 1:21:34social media markets and and all the different platforms that
- 1:21:37we're on Odyssey too. Odyssey, we're doing pretty well
- 1:21:39too. I just want to give a shout out
- 1:21:41to them and Odyssey letting us post our show on their network.
- 1:21:44Yeah, we'll be back on Wednesday.
- 1:21:46Spudo we have on all. Right.
- 1:21:47Joining the show again for the first time in a couple of years,
- 1:21:498:45 will be our friend Bashar Breeland, former Commanders,
- 1:21:52Chiefs, Vikings cornerback at 8:45.
- 1:21:54And then to be determined on time is our friend, Mr. Jim
- 1:21:57Lehrer. I want to say something.
- 1:21:59Bashar Breeland, the last time he was on his show, I had to get
- 1:22:02a lot out of him, and it took a while to get him open.
- 1:22:06And then two weeks after we interviewed him, he was
- 1:22:09arrested. For what?
- 1:22:11What did he? Jeff told us at the time you had
- 1:22:13some kind of some kind of drug arrest.
- 1:22:15He got a drug arrest. He had like a machine gun.
- 1:22:18He was caught with a machine gun and, and, and we read the story.
- 1:22:21It was absolutely crazy and and Breeland was fantastic on the
- 1:22:24show. I remember, I remember that was
- 1:22:26at the time the Giants ate a lot of corners.
- 1:22:28I was trying to recruit him to come to the Giants.
- 1:22:30So it was that that Pete, Pete Burstick, we had on like what?
- 1:22:33Would be perfect for the Giants. Because he had time.
- 1:22:35Yes. No, you know why it would have
- 1:22:36been perfect? Because you had another guy
- 1:22:38that, you know, had had a dead body in his basement.
- 1:22:41Because of his good old brother Jackrabbit.
- 1:22:42Yeah, the Jackrabbit. Remember that story?
- 1:22:46Yeah, that was crazy. He had a couple of good years.
- 1:22:49He was pretty good in coverage, yeah.
- 1:22:51So was, So was. Basically I'd cover ups
- 1:22:53apparently. Too, I said he was good.
- 1:22:56They, his brother wrapped the dead body in his basement and
- 1:22:59put it in the corner. Nobody saw it.
- 1:23:01Nobody saw a dead body in the corner.
- 1:23:03These things happen. Yeah, I'm sure it does.
- 1:23:05He was definitely jumping over it, if you know what I mean.
- 1:23:08All right. Goodnight.
- 1:23:09Farewell. We're gone.
- 1:23:11It's the worldwide sports radio network.
- 1:23:15This makes my pecker hard.
