- 0:14Speaker 2: is my son. You gotta work, y Son. Another mom
- 0:19Speaker 2: talking dogs day Line, don't talk.
- 0:21Speaker 3: You gotta Burt.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, Real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 4: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:37Speaker 5: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:41Speaker 5: And unfortunately we don't Lisa, we don't have Hollis Lewis
- 0:46Speaker 5: in the studio with us.
- 0:47Speaker 6: But I have you, you have me you bless your heart,
- 0:51Speaker 6: I think, and I know you missed me last week
- 0:55Speaker 6: in person.
- 0:55Speaker 5: I did. I did. I did, I did because I
- 1:01Speaker 5: didn't have a fight last week.
- 1:03Speaker 3: So I really do think. I really do think.
- 1:08Speaker 5: That we're going to probably have some different opinions, different
- 1:11Speaker 5: opinions today.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I think. I think so one of the one.
- 1:17Speaker 5: Of the interesting Well, let me, I don't want to
- 1:20Speaker 5: say interesting concerning things that I have, and I'm going
- 1:24Speaker 5: to start at the bottom of our list of conversations
- 1:26Speaker 5: so that so that you're aware. One of the interesting
- 1:37Speaker 5: things to me and concerning things to me. When I
- 1:40Speaker 5: think about young athletes and we talk about like being examples,
- 1:46Speaker 5: like being an example for a young kid in high
- 1:49Speaker 5: school or college.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Or youth football and sports that.
- 1:54Speaker 5: The City of South Charleston producers, it's it's hard to.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Be that role model.
- 2:03Speaker 5: If they don't see who you are and and and
- 2:11Speaker 5: your the kids, the kids or high school athletes they made.
- 2:17Speaker 5: You know, I'll make this case for me. The high
- 2:22Speaker 5: school has some some some pictures of me, jersey of me,
- 2:28Speaker 5: all kinds of different things in the trophy case and
- 2:30Speaker 5: that memorabilia around the school. Those kids see that, Okay, okay,
- 2:36Speaker 5: once you've seen it, once you're done. But you don't
- 2:40Speaker 5: really know who I am. You don't know if I'm
- 2:42Speaker 5: still in West Virginia.
- 2:44Speaker 3: You don't know. Unless you have a contact with me.
- 2:47Speaker 3: You don't really know.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Like like I got an opportunity to talk to four
- 2:53Speaker 5: or five athletes a couple of weeks ago, and I
- 2:56Speaker 5: think I mentioned it on the show then, And they
- 2:59Speaker 5: had no idea of.
- 3:03Speaker 3: My career none.
- 3:06Speaker 7: And this is the what age range this is?
- 3:09Speaker 5: This is probably sophomore, junior in high school. Okay, okay,
- 3:15Speaker 5: And and it doesn't bother me for me, but it
- 3:21Speaker 5: bothers me for them because if they don't know me,
- 3:27Speaker 5: they don't know Kurt Warner from Pineville. They don't know
- 3:31Speaker 5: Robert Alexander from South Charleston. No, no, no chance of history.
- 3:38Speaker 5: They don't maybe know they may know Randy's name, but
- 3:42Speaker 5: they don't know just how great he was. And Jason
- 3:50Speaker 5: Williams okay, and a lot of those athletes. You know,
- 3:58Speaker 5: you look at somebody like a Jerry West, right, we
- 4:01Speaker 5: try to find that. We get upset a lot of times.
- 4:05Speaker 5: We get upset because these athletes don't come home. They
- 4:08Speaker 5: don't come back. The question I have is why don't
- 4:12Speaker 5: they come back? And I'm going to make the case
- 4:16Speaker 5: that they don't come back because every one of them
- 4:19Speaker 5: have had negativity because for some reason, whether you thought
- 4:26Speaker 5: it was that or you didn't, those athletes have an
- 4:31Speaker 5: issue of why they don't come back.
- 4:35Speaker 7: Yeah, that's a tough one.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that's well.
- 4:38Speaker 7: I mean, okay, I'm going to start with this.
- 4:40Speaker 6: I think you have to look at each individual athlete
- 4:43Speaker 6: that you just named, the choices they made when they
- 4:46Speaker 6: went on to their college careers and then their professional careers.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Some had a choice of staying here in West Virginia
- 4:55Speaker 6: and going to Marshall University and going to WVU or
- 5:00Speaker 6: maybe a smaller college. And some chose to do that,
- 5:02Speaker 6: like you, Carl okay, Jason Williams, you know, chose he
- 5:07Speaker 6: chose to go to Marshall, right, he went to Marshall, Okay.
- 5:11Speaker 6: And then there were other athletes such as your Kurt Warner,
- 5:14Speaker 6: which there's a perception that they didn't choose to come here,
- 5:19Speaker 6: even though we know the background story, and because uh,
- 5:24Speaker 6: you know, we think they had a choice of whether
- 5:28Speaker 6: or not they could go to WU or Marshall, and
- 5:31Speaker 6: they chose to go somewhere else, and that leaves a
- 5:33Speaker 6: bad taste in the mouth of some of the fans
- 5:37Speaker 6: of in West Virginia.
- 5:39Speaker 7: Are you following me here?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Okay?
- 5:41Speaker 6: Because I think in West Virginia particularly, we have always
- 5:48Speaker 6: had to battle. We've always had this media cultural perception
- 5:52Speaker 6: out there. We've got some negative stereotypes that follow our population. Right,
- 5:58Speaker 6: we're called Billbilly sometime. We've got this s against the
- 6:01Speaker 6: world mentality, and I think our fan bases have equated
- 6:08Speaker 6: athletic success as a direct reflection of our state's identity
- 6:13Speaker 6: and their own identity, and so when someone rejects that,
- 6:16Speaker 6: such as a Kurt Warner or you know, Randy when
- 6:21Speaker 6: he left, even though he did play ball at Marshall,
- 6:23Speaker 6: he did have when he went to the Hall of
- 6:26Speaker 6: Fame ceremony, I don't think he had a whole lot
- 6:29Speaker 6: to say about Marshall if I recall it correctly. And
- 6:33Speaker 6: then you also looked at his documentary about his high
- 6:36Speaker 6: school days and career. I think that when people see
- 6:41Speaker 6: those things, and I'm not judging, this is not judgmental
- 6:46Speaker 6: at all. Okay, this is more of a cultural a
- 6:52Speaker 6: cultural tendency. I think for West Virginians that they take
- 6:56Speaker 6: it as even though it's not intended as a personal insult,
- 7:00Speaker 6: when athletes choose to leave and maybe go a different
- 7:04Speaker 6: path than a lot of West Virginians, but West Virginians
- 7:09Speaker 6: sometimes view that as an insult.
- 7:12Speaker 3: All right, do you see where I'm going here?
- 7:15Speaker 7: And I can I'm not saying for every single athlete.
- 7:18Speaker 5: No, I understand, and I get, I totally understand. I
- 7:23Speaker 5: totally understand everything that you said. What I will say first,
- 7:30Speaker 5: and I'm going to go back to the person who
- 7:34Speaker 5: was my mentor was the guy who put me into
- 7:38Speaker 5: the and it took me in, took me in and
- 7:42Speaker 5: made me a professional athlete.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Okay, and that's Robert Alexander.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yes, I I visibly looked at and watched and I've
- 7:56Speaker 5: said this a thousand times when this name, when his
- 7:58Speaker 5: name comes up and we have a conversation in and
- 8:01Speaker 5: around him, I've seen the petitions of the people who
- 8:08Speaker 5: wanted him to go to WVU.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Okay, perfect example of what I just said. Keep going.
- 8:14Speaker 5: Because you loved West Virginia and you love WVU, and
- 8:18Speaker 5: you love WVU football and Marshall and Marshall and Marshall.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Those places have to do what you do for you
- 8:31Speaker 5: to succeed. And for Robert, he was a straight up
- 8:36Speaker 5: eyeby and at the time WU was a split back
- 8:40Speaker 5: mm hmm. So it did not fit him. But nobody
- 8:45Speaker 5: cared about that. I won't say nobody, but there was
- 8:48Speaker 5: a lot of people who just loved WVU and.
- 8:52Speaker 6: They weren't informed, but they didn't understand that, they don't
- 8:56Speaker 6: understand the game.
- 8:56Speaker 5: There you go, they all and again, you can love
- 9:00Speaker 5: I can love Marshall, but I'm not gonna be mad
- 9:03Speaker 5: if somebody does not go to Marshall because for whatever
- 9:07Speaker 5: the reason that they say, see you're not I'm.
- 9:11Speaker 6: I'm and I'm not see that that. But but what
- 9:14Speaker 6: I'm trying to explain, I'm not interrupting. I'm just want
- 9:17Speaker 6: to add this in. I'm trying to explain an overall
- 9:20Speaker 6: mentality of fans, right, Okay, not every fan. And I'm
- 9:25Speaker 6: not saying every athlete fits this this mold either, Okay.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Just want to clarify that that's right.
- 9:30Speaker 3: That's right.
- 9:33Speaker 5: For to to go to w to go to Marshall,
- 9:36Speaker 5: to go to WU, there has to be something there
- 9:41Speaker 5: that that particular athlete, that particular athlete's family sees.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And likes and believes.
- 9:52Speaker 5: That there can be success, not just athletically, academically socially.
- 9:59Speaker 3: The only reason.
- 10:00Speaker 5: That I went to Marshall and and and let me
- 10:05Speaker 5: be clear, at that point in time when I when
- 10:08Speaker 5: I went back to Marshall for a second visit, when
- 10:12Speaker 5: Sonny Randall became the coach, I went back there.
- 10:17Speaker 3: That was it. That was my outside of state schools universities.
- 10:24Speaker 5: I didn't have anything else, So I mean so so
- 10:28Speaker 5: Marshall was my only big options.
- 10:30Speaker 6: So so let me ask you this, if you would
- 10:32Speaker 6: have had other options out outside of West Virginia out
- 10:36Speaker 6: of state.
- 10:37Speaker 7: Would you have explored those over Marshall.
- 10:40Speaker 5: Or I went to I went, I went to Virginia Tech.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Initially I went to I went, I went on a visit,
- 10:47Speaker 5: and I mean, I couldn't help, but like it, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 5: I'm coming from yeah everything. But then they backed away,
- 10:58Speaker 5: they backed away, So I ended up, you know, with
- 11:02Speaker 5: you know, different, like I said, different, West Virginia schools,
- 11:07Speaker 5: and Sonny Randall ends up getting the job at Marshall
- 11:11Speaker 5: and invites me back down to come back. Well, first
- 11:15Speaker 5: thing I hear from him is you know he played
- 11:17Speaker 5: professional football. I was sold because that was my goal.
- 11:21Speaker 5: So I'm thinking, this is the guy that can get
- 11:23Speaker 5: me where I need to go. So I made I
- 11:28Speaker 5: made the Marshall pick purposefully for me and purposely for
- 11:33Speaker 5: the guys that was there. And then then fortunately I
- 11:36Speaker 5: get Bob Pruitt as my dB coach on top of that,
- 11:39Speaker 5: so I was blessed with a ton of great coaches
- 11:43Speaker 5: around me.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Jimmy Grove was there, you know. I mean so, but
- 11:50Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 11:52Speaker 5: What I don't understand is is like we I believe
- 11:57Speaker 5: we have great We've had great athletes come through. What
- 12:02Speaker 5: we haven't had is we haven't had the ability to
- 12:07Speaker 5: sustain them, happily, treat them in a way that they
- 12:12Speaker 5: would want to.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Reach back.
- 12:15Speaker 5: And and and work on these young athletes to help
- 12:18Speaker 5: them be better, to not to pick that, not to
- 12:22Speaker 5: pick at school, but to help them understand, you know,
- 12:26Speaker 5: work with them, whether it's camps or just coming back
- 12:31Speaker 5: to talk, come back to speak, come back just to
- 12:33Speaker 5: be seen.
- 12:36Speaker 7: I mean, to me, what venues could they use for I.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Think that there's a I think that there's a ton
- 12:42Speaker 5: of opportunities. There's a ton of opportunities that they there's
- 12:47Speaker 5: and things that they could do, but they won't do
- 12:53Speaker 5: them because for the most part, they've not been asked.
- 12:59Speaker 5: They haven't they There's always something that that an athlete,
- 13:05Speaker 5: a professional athlete or potential professional athlete, the potential college
- 13:08Speaker 5: athlete does or doesn't do that makes everybody mad in
- 13:12Speaker 5: West Virginia because they don't do what we want them
- 13:14Speaker 5: to do.
- 13:15Speaker 3: That's unfair, that's unfair to the athlete.
- 13:18Speaker 5: He or she has to be able to pick the
- 13:21Speaker 5: school wherever the school is.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And what we cheer for is that they are West.
- 13:26Speaker 7: Virginia's right right.
- 13:29Speaker 5: And I mean Robert lost all of his basically almost
- 13:31Speaker 5: all of his fame in West Virginia and West Virginia. Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 5: Kurt Warner lost it because he went he went to
- 13:39Speaker 5: Penn State arrival of w U, and he was still
- 13:43Speaker 5: went to the league, and he still represented West Virginia
- 13:48Speaker 5: as a as a West Virginia athlete.
- 13:50Speaker 6: Right, but he's still he didn't attend a West Virginia school.
- 13:53Speaker 3: He didn't attend to West goes back to.
- 13:56Speaker 6: To to what I laid out in the very beginning,
- 13:59Speaker 6: I think in West Virginia.
- 14:01Speaker 7: We have these deep I think we have these deep.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Family connections that I mean, this state is probably one
- 14:10Speaker 6: of the most devoted family oriented states that I've ever
- 14:16Speaker 6: witnessed and been a part of and visited in all
- 14:19Speaker 6: my life. I mean, I think it's just the nature
- 14:21Speaker 6: of having a smaller population being isolated by the mountains.
- 14:26Speaker 7: Were very family oriented.
- 14:27Speaker 6: And I think, like I said before, I think when
- 14:31Speaker 6: successful coaches or athletes leave for other opportunities, regardless of
- 14:36Speaker 6: the reason, people view it as a personal betrayal. And
- 14:40Speaker 6: I'm not saying it's right or wrong. I'm just saying,
- 14:43Speaker 6: you know, we know it's a professional move. We know
- 14:45Speaker 6: it's in the best interest of the athlete. Okay, we
- 14:48Speaker 6: know that talking right now, but some fans, some fan bases,
- 14:52Speaker 6: take it personal.
- 14:53Speaker 7: I mean, look what happened to rich Rod, right and.
- 14:56Speaker 6: There's still a divided population when you talk about rich
- 14:59Speaker 6: Rod in this day. There are fans that absolutely to
- 15:01Speaker 6: this day with him, yes, and he's back, he's our
- 15:07Speaker 6: head coach right now, and there's people that absolutely will
- 15:10Speaker 6: not support him ever again. And it blows my mind.
- 15:14Speaker 6: But I think I think it's just to the ties
- 15:16Speaker 6: of our culture. And I'm not saying it's right or wrong.
- 15:19Speaker 6: I'm just saying I think that's part of what's happening.
- 15:23Speaker 3: I think I think.
- 15:26Speaker 5: I'm going to put this out out to the air,
- 15:29Speaker 5: and if you choose to say something about it, you're
- 15:31Speaker 5: more than welcome. I think when it comes down to
- 15:35Speaker 5: a high school athlete picking a college, I think the
- 15:38Speaker 5: most important thing in that is that he and his
- 15:43Speaker 5: family can.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Find a place.
- 15:47Speaker 5: Assume a place, because you could be wrong, Assume that
- 15:52Speaker 5: this is going to be a place that I could stay.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Participate.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Maybe back in your day. We know what it's like
- 16:00Speaker 6: now within ion transfer portal, But but I'm.
- 16:04Speaker 3: Thinking still mm hmm.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Money is I get that money is the most important
- 16:11Speaker 5: kind of thing to you, but I will say this.
- 16:17Speaker 3: If you if you.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Just go for the money, that's not necessarily going to
- 16:27Speaker 5: put you in a spot two play. Mmm.
- 16:34Speaker 7: It's just.
- 16:36Speaker 3: See. I just think that we we we.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Should be happy that our kids go to a college
- 16:43Speaker 5: as a student athlete, and we don't care where they go.
- 16:48Speaker 5: They should be able to go wherever they want and play. Okay,
- 16:53Speaker 5: And I think I think, however, we and and we
- 16:57Speaker 5: should and we should cheer. We should cheer for them.
- 17:00Speaker 5: My losses at Marshall were huge, but I'd like to
- 17:08Speaker 5: think that that group of fan base that that was
- 17:11Speaker 5: there when I was there, mm hmm, still would cheer
- 17:16Speaker 5: for me coming back to Marshall, I would think.
- 17:21Speaker 7: So, you know, and and let me ask you this.
- 17:24Speaker 6: So, so you're you've laid out the issues of not
- 17:29Speaker 6: not being of course, so you've laid out this, Sorry,
- 17:34Speaker 6: you've laid out the issues of you feel like these
- 17:37Speaker 6: athletes are not being as respected or or or remembered
- 17:42Speaker 6: the way that they should be based on their their pastor.
- 17:48Speaker 7: So so what do we do to remedy it?
- 17:50Speaker 3: What?
- 17:51Speaker 8: What?
- 17:51Speaker 6: What are some answers. I think that I think we've
- 17:53Speaker 6: laid out problems.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I think the number I.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Think that I think the number one thing is is
- 17:57Speaker 5: we have to cover these athletes. We have to and
- 18:00Speaker 5: and and when I say cover them through the media,
- 18:05Speaker 5: schools try to put out information, but let's not let's
- 18:11Speaker 5: I'm a Marshall guy. If if a kid decides that
- 18:15Speaker 5: he's going to go to wv U, oh great, I'm
- 18:19Speaker 5: not mad at him for going to WVU, you know,
- 18:23Speaker 5: because I want him to go play. I want him
- 18:26Speaker 5: to have a future. I want him to have a
- 18:28Speaker 5: free education because I know the majority of these kids
- 18:32Speaker 5: do not have the funding to to be able to
- 18:35Speaker 5: go to college. Right, So if sports is going to
- 18:37Speaker 5: be the thing.
- 18:40Speaker 6: But the rivalry there is pretty pretty deep, but it
- 18:44Speaker 6: should should not be deeper.
- 18:48Speaker 5: We should not care where that kid goes to play
- 18:53Speaker 5: to be a to have a scholarship. If he's got
- 18:55Speaker 5: opportunities to get scholarships in four or five different schools.
- 18:58Speaker 3: All of them in West Virginia.
- 19:00Speaker 5: The accolage of you Marshalls included, if they pick one,
- 19:05Speaker 5: we should be happy.
- 19:07Speaker 3: M M.
- 19:08Speaker 8: I can't, I came in, can you.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Can you hear me? You can't hear me? Are you
- 19:17Speaker 3: where you got to come back in?
- 19:19Speaker 6: Matt's got us on the edge of our seats, and
- 19:21Speaker 6: you want to know what he has to say?
- 19:23Speaker 7: Here we've got here, he goes, we want to hear
- 19:30Speaker 7: all about this?
- 19:31Speaker 3: Matt?
- 19:31Speaker 7: What do you think? What are your thoughts?
- 19:32Speaker 9: All? Right?
- 19:33Speaker 8: So, I think that people in general maybe feel as
- 19:36Speaker 8: though professional athletes are maybe a bit inaccessible, and not
- 19:40Speaker 8: because of anything that professional athletes do. I think it's
- 19:45Speaker 8: just the nature of you know, once you've become an
- 19:47Speaker 8: NBA player, or an MLB player or an NFL player,
- 19:51Speaker 8: people just think, why would a professional athlete want to
- 19:55Speaker 8: come back to their old high school? Why would they
- 19:57Speaker 8: want to come and talk to my kids in my program.
- 20:00Speaker 7: That's a good that's a good view.
- 20:02Speaker 3: But I got a response to that.
- 20:05Speaker 7: I got a response to that.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Okay. So I had reached out to Randy.
- 20:12Speaker 5: Maybe I don't know, a month or so ago, and
- 20:14Speaker 5: realized his numbers chanced, So I have no access to him. Okay,
- 20:19Speaker 5: I could be mad at that, right like I could
- 20:21Speaker 5: I could make I could try to make.
- 20:23Speaker 3: The case he changed his number and he didn't give
- 20:25Speaker 3: it to me. Why would he?
- 20:27Speaker 5: Why would he have to think to give it to me,
- 20:29Speaker 5: so I don't have it, So it's that to me, Okay,
- 20:32Speaker 5: that's okay. But for I think that if anybody else
- 20:35Speaker 5: was in that situation, they.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Would probably be mad.
- 20:39Speaker 5: But Randy doesn't have like the people that he is
- 20:42Speaker 5: in contact with on a daily basis.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Are not are not just the open public.
- 20:50Speaker 5: And unfortunately, because it's he's not in the normal general population.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Why why is he going to run into that situation and.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Be, oh, Randy, hey, hey, die hey, Randy give me that?
- 21:06Speaker 3: Can you give me that? Why would he do that
- 21:08Speaker 3: to himself if you have that? And I think I.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Think Randy's very giving. He just does it in a
- 21:15Speaker 6: private way. He is He's always been private.
- 21:17Speaker 3: He is.
- 21:17Speaker 5: He has done so much for some under the radar,
- 21:21Speaker 5: different causes that you cannot imagine. Because he is who
- 21:26Speaker 5: he is. He doesn't need your pat on the back.
- 21:29Speaker 7: No, he does not, And you're mad.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Because you want. You would love to pat him on
- 21:35Speaker 5: the back. You'd love to know what he did. But
- 21:37Speaker 5: he doesn't feel like he has to do that. And
- 21:39Speaker 5: I think that's I think I think that's a good thing.
- 21:42Speaker 6: And I think on Randy's part, if we're going to
- 21:44Speaker 6: continue this subject about mister Moss. I think on his part,
- 21:48Speaker 6: he kind of left West Virginia with a little bit
- 21:50Speaker 6: of a bitter taste in his mouth, with his high
- 21:53Speaker 6: school experiences with with law enforcement, with with what happened
- 21:58Speaker 6: to him at the high school level. You know, although
- 22:01Speaker 6: Marshall O, you know, welcomed him with open arms and
- 22:05Speaker 6: he had a great career there. But I think sometimes
- 22:08Speaker 6: you know that those those earlier memories, you know, when
- 22:11Speaker 6: you're growing up, sometimes they're hard, they're tough, they're hard
- 22:14Speaker 6: to kind of forget, and not that you're holding it
- 22:17Speaker 6: against anybody, but maybe coming back and being public and
- 22:21Speaker 6: and interacting with some of those people that he grew
- 22:23Speaker 6: up with just brings back bad vibes.
- 22:25Speaker 8: I will say, though, when he was inducted into the
- 22:28Speaker 8: Hall of Fame, what was the first thing he did
- 22:30Speaker 8: after all of that in Canton? He came to the
- 22:32Speaker 8: Charleston Town Center and his gold jacket and he shook
- 22:35Speaker 8: hands with everybody and he kissed babies.
- 22:38Speaker 5: Yeah, and he's a he's a good person. I'm telling you,
- 22:42Speaker 5: this guy, to me is a wonderful person who has
- 22:49Speaker 5: been scarred, has.
- 22:51Speaker 7: Been scarred making My point is.
- 22:56Speaker 3: He's trying to be the best version of himself.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 23:00Speaker 5: And Matt to that point, you know, that shows you,
- 23:05Speaker 5: that proves to you he didn't have there's no reason
- 23:08Speaker 5: he had to do that.
- 23:10Speaker 8: It brings up another good point though too. At the
- 23:12Speaker 8: end of the day, athletes are still humans.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Whether you the.
- 23:16Speaker 8: Girl work in the cashier at McDonald's, or whether you're
- 23:19Speaker 8: a professional athlete or you're anywhere in between, the fact
- 23:22Speaker 8: of the matter is everyone still goes through the same
- 23:25Speaker 8: things as humans, so everybody reacts differently.
- 23:29Speaker 7: I went, I was gonna just tell you guys.
- 23:30Speaker 6: I went live on Facebook and Sterling sharp comment and
- 23:33Speaker 6: he said, true, he is onto something. So he was
- 23:37Speaker 6: referring to you know, both of you, I think with
- 23:39Speaker 6: your version of him being you know, having some scars.
- 23:42Speaker 6: And then you're saying he still came and gave back
- 23:44Speaker 6: after his Hall of Fame induction, kind of like Sterling
- 23:47Speaker 6: did with us. So hey, Sterling, but anyway, yeah, I
- 23:51Speaker 6: just wanted to let you know.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Well, and I don't know if I don't know if.
- 23:57Speaker 5: We can ever get a chance to utilize his overall
- 24:02Speaker 5: success for an athlete.
- 24:05Speaker 3: And when I say for an athlete.
- 24:07Speaker 5: We know a Randy Moss is a is a is
- 24:11Speaker 5: a once in a lifetime maybe type of talent. But
- 24:16Speaker 5: even if you have any measurement of skill set in
- 24:21Speaker 5: any sport or in anything, the example of trying to
- 24:28Speaker 5: get there athletics is the thing that we used to
- 24:32Speaker 5: be able to use and say work like that, Like,
- 24:37Speaker 5: if you work out that hard, if you put in
- 24:39Speaker 5: the efforts, you're going to have this kind of success.
- 24:42Speaker 5: And I'll make the case that regardless of how great
- 24:46Speaker 5: Randy was, naturally the work that he put in, yes
- 24:53Speaker 5: to be even better. Yea, most people could not even
- 24:57Speaker 5: fathom it. And again I know for myself, just to
- 25:01Speaker 5: be able to get there, just to be able to
- 25:03Speaker 5: be an athlete at that level, to be able to
- 25:05Speaker 5: be a good athlete at that at the NFL.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Level, I was sold on working out five days a week,
- 25:16Speaker 3: sixteen weeks constantly.
- 25:19Speaker 7: Complete life. It was complete.
- 25:21Speaker 3: It was my complete life, you know.
- 25:23Speaker 5: So when I'm off, when it's off season, I'm spending
- 25:26Speaker 5: another sixteen weeks to get ready for.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Four weeks of camp.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Yeah, And if you're not doing something like that, don't hate.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Don't hate on guys who have put the work in.
- 25:42Speaker 7: Yeah, who do you think is hating? I think I
- 25:45Speaker 7: think that we have I mean just just the athlete.
- 25:49Speaker 5: No, I think that I think that we some of
- 25:52Speaker 5: these athletes who have gotten bad raps. And I think
- 25:55Speaker 5: Randy has gotten a bad roak. And I think, you know,
- 26:00Speaker 5: he's more than that. He's still He's still an example
- 26:06Speaker 5: Robert Alexander. He gets he gets hooked on painkillers and
- 26:15Speaker 5: ends up getting into drugs. I can I can testify
- 26:22Speaker 5: that he was the guy who was telling me, looking
- 26:24Speaker 5: me dead in my face and telling me, don't do this,
- 26:27Speaker 5: don't do that, the things that he ended up doing,
- 26:31Speaker 5: so I can buy and and and I he told
- 26:33Speaker 5: me what took place. I know I had a chance
- 26:36Speaker 5: to talk to him. My career is because of not
- 26:42Speaker 5: not just because of him, my mom, my dad, my family,
- 26:46Speaker 5: all that, but his workout routines, his his his confidence
- 26:52Speaker 5: in me.
- 26:55Speaker 7: See what would what would mentor?
- 26:57Speaker 5: He was a mentor And what we're missing are the mentors.
- 27:01Speaker 5: Why are we missing the mentors? Because the mentors are
- 27:04Speaker 5: getting talked about? And how many people do you think
- 27:07Speaker 5: now that Randy's on on TV on ESPN, how many
- 27:11Speaker 5: people say like, oh, you know what he's doing really good.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't think he was great in football, you know.
- 27:20Speaker 6: And here's here's another point, and and this is this
- 27:23Speaker 6: is kind of a I don't want to call anybody
- 27:25Speaker 6: old in the room, Matt and Carl, but I mean,
- 27:28Speaker 6: we know with with Tom, the passage of Tom, the
- 27:32Speaker 6: further we get away from those those great performances, that
- 27:35Speaker 6: those athletic performances, the less and less they're talked about.
- 27:38Speaker 6: They're being replaced by the Patrick Mahomes. They're being replaced
- 27:41Speaker 6: by the you know, uh whoever. The latest name is
- 27:44Speaker 6: may from from the New England. So it's not so
- 27:49Speaker 6: much a matter of people being disrespectful or people wanting
- 27:55Speaker 6: to to, you know, look badly upon these these former
- 27:59Speaker 6: athletes from West Virginia. It's that they're from a different generation.
- 28:04Speaker 6: But and it gets forgotten in the in the in
- 28:07Speaker 6: the nonsense. I guess I don't know how to put it.
- 28:10Speaker 3: But if you don't think, yes, but I think who.
- 28:17Speaker 5: These athletes are in what what they should be in
- 28:20Speaker 5: West Virginia. They're not and they should be. They should be.
- 28:26Speaker 5: We owe them that they have an opportunity. I mean,
- 28:29Speaker 5: think about it. We have Randy Moss could possibly be
- 28:34Speaker 5: the best football player ever. Okay, so and he's from here, right,
- 28:41Speaker 5: Jason Williams possibly could be one of the best ball
- 28:44Speaker 5: handlers in the NBA.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Where's he at from here?
- 28:48Speaker 6: Right?
- 28:49Speaker 3: Like we have we have those.
- 28:51Speaker 6: People out there, Well, Jason will be here here in May.
- 28:56Speaker 6: I think he's coming to the dirty game.
- 29:00Speaker 7: He's going to come back and.
- 29:01Speaker 6: Do some type of you know, promotion or something. But yeah,
- 29:04Speaker 6: he comes back.
- 29:05Speaker 5: But but what what a So he comes back for
- 29:09Speaker 5: things like that.
- 29:10Speaker 3: He gets like that.
- 29:12Speaker 7: And I'm like when you go to the vikings and
- 29:14Speaker 7: do things right, but.
- 29:15Speaker 5: I don't feel like, where is he? Where's where's his
- 29:20Speaker 5: where's his trophy? Where's his where's his statue? Where's his
- 29:25Speaker 5: you know?
- 29:25Speaker 3: We we don't. It's like we just don't do enough.
- 29:29Speaker 5: If he's doing that kind of stuff, How should West
- 29:32Speaker 5: Virginia treat him? Like we should be promoting him to something,
- 29:36Speaker 5: we should give him a day?
- 29:38Speaker 7: Or are we are we big enough?
- 29:39Speaker 6: I mean, do we have a big enough state the
- 29:42Speaker 6: kind of resources that some of these bigger cities have
- 29:45Speaker 6: to be able to do the statues, to.
- 29:47Speaker 7: Tell it, to do the memorial.
- 29:48Speaker 3: I'll challenge that by saying.
- 29:51Speaker 5: When you go to Minnesota and you look around and
- 29:55Speaker 5: you see, you know, you go to the facility and
- 29:58Speaker 5: you see the purple people, leaders see you know, all
- 30:01Speaker 5: the different eras of players are celebrated there.
- 30:05Speaker 3: You you get that.
- 30:06Speaker 5: And I know we've got a Hall of Fame, and
- 30:08Speaker 5: I know most of these guys are probably in it.
- 30:11Speaker 3: But I think, what what bothers me?
- 30:14Speaker 5: What I feel? And so this is just a feel.
- 30:18Speaker 5: We don't really respect. We don't give the do that
- 30:23Speaker 5: a Randy Moss and a Jason Williams actually deserve. We
- 30:27Speaker 5: think what we give them is enough.
- 30:32Speaker 7: So what what what what should we do?
- 30:35Speaker 9: What?
- 30:35Speaker 7: What should what should to me?
- 30:36Speaker 9: Do?
- 30:37Speaker 3: What you do to me?
- 30:38Speaker 5: Like, I'm giving them every possible honor for them, speak
- 30:46Speaker 5: not just because of them and what they've achieved, but
- 30:49Speaker 5: for the kid that's going to be looking at it.
- 30:53Speaker 3: For the kids who dream to be that.
- 30:56Speaker 7: M hm.
- 30:57Speaker 3: And if we don't because if we don't do that,
- 31:01Speaker 3: we lose we lose it. And you're smiling over there.
- 31:08Speaker 6: He wanted to clarify that he was agreeing with Mad
- 31:10Speaker 6: at Night You and that.
- 31:14Speaker 5: No talking and and and there's not a talk, there's
- 31:16Speaker 5: not a conversation about it, and and is it because
- 31:19Speaker 5: we don't want too many statues or we we to me,
- 31:24Speaker 5: when you when you try to, if you try to
- 31:26Speaker 5: compare my career in the NFL versus Randy's career in
- 31:30Speaker 5: the NFL versus Pennington's career, I think that's wrong. I
- 31:34Speaker 5: think I think success is to get there and and
- 31:39Speaker 5: to me, I think it's deserving two to give to
- 31:45Speaker 5: give us an opportunity to be a legitimate role model,
- 31:51Speaker 5: and and and and something so that a so a
- 31:56Speaker 5: child could see. Man, we had some players, we we've
- 32:00Speaker 5: had some talented players, but we can't we can't.
- 32:05Speaker 3: We can't find that, like you can't find that here,
- 32:09Speaker 3: you know. So let's take it break. Oh oh no,
- 32:15Speaker 3: all right, I did, and we'll be right back.

- 33:29Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real Talk, real experience,
- 33:33Speaker 4: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 33:37Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Ladies and Gentlemen.
- 33:41Speaker 5: I had mentioned a name earlier in the show, and
- 33:47Speaker 5: for some odd reason, that person has called into the show.
- 33:54Speaker 5: I think this is this is actually a little bit aggressive,
- 33:57Speaker 5: and I feel I feel like I don't keep I
- 34:00Speaker 5: feel attacked and feel like this person is trying to
- 34:03Speaker 5: take over my show. But we have Sterling shop has
- 34:07Speaker 5: called in for some odd reason. I have no idea
- 34:10Speaker 5: where this is gonna go. So let's just say hello.
- 34:13Speaker 3: Sterly.
- 34:16Speaker 9: Boy, y'all be glad, y'all got me? Oh boy, what
- 34:24Speaker 9: do you want?
- 34:25Speaker 3: Man?
- 34:25Speaker 11: You know what?
- 34:27Speaker 6: Man?
- 34:27Speaker 9: You guys are have hit on something that is really,
- 34:30Speaker 9: really a good subject to talk about. And I think
- 34:33Speaker 9: it's want versus need. And when you talk about recognizing
- 34:38Speaker 9: the players from where you're from and putting them, I
- 34:43Speaker 9: think what happens sometimes is we get confused with want
- 34:48Speaker 9: me Carl, I'm I'm gonna speak, I'm gonna speak a
- 34:51Speaker 9: little bit for and I'm gonna I'm gonna use my
- 34:55Speaker 9: brother and I My brother always wanted to be here.
- 34:58Speaker 9: He always wanted to be a voice, a big voice.
- 35:02Speaker 9: He always had something to say. He always wanted to
- 35:05Speaker 9: be out front. I was different. And when the city
- 35:10Speaker 9: of Glenville, which is where we're from, when they recognized
- 35:13Speaker 9: him with the parade and all of that, it was great.
- 35:19Speaker 9: He was the first, you know, hall of famer that
- 35:21Speaker 9: he was great. I was different and didn't need or
- 35:26Speaker 9: want it. And so I think when we look at athletes,
- 35:31Speaker 9: we sometimes missed the boat on need and want. There
- 35:35Speaker 9: are some athletes that then, Carl, I'll say it. There
- 35:39Speaker 9: are some athletes, Carl, that we know that need their
- 35:41Speaker 9: egos fed. There are some athletes that don't want it.
- 35:46Speaker 9: They're like, guess what, man, I'm from here, but I
- 35:49Speaker 9: live over here and I'm growing over here. I wish
- 35:53Speaker 9: I could have done a little bit more from where
- 35:56Speaker 9: I was from, but I ended up doing more where
- 35:59Speaker 9: I was planning. So it is a man. You guys
- 36:04Speaker 9: made some really good points, but I you know, and
- 36:07Speaker 9: I know Randy a kind of well and outstanding individual.
- 36:13Speaker 9: But the thing is that you can't you know what
- 36:15Speaker 9: I love is and how we were raised. Everything you
- 36:19Speaker 9: do goes home. So when Randy was doing when he
- 36:24Speaker 9: was whatever happened to him in high school was at home.
- 36:28Speaker 9: But when you look at when he left everything, man,
- 36:32Speaker 9: the hey West Virginia got to grow, they got to love,
- 36:35Speaker 9: they got to say that's our And I think for Randy,
- 36:40Speaker 9: that's enough. I think you know, there comes and you
- 36:44Speaker 9: and and I'm going to say this because I got
- 36:46Speaker 9: a lot of friends who are like this. When you
- 36:49Speaker 9: need your ego fed, you will find yourself saying that.
- 36:53Speaker 9: You know, Charleston ain't doing enough for me coming out
- 36:56Speaker 9: of there. You know, I was the first round draft pick.
- 36:59Speaker 9: I would the seventh round or twelfth round or free
- 37:02Speaker 9: agent or so. They need to recognize me. You know.
- 37:08Speaker 9: It's so funny, man, being in this position, and you know,
- 37:11Speaker 9: with the Pro Football Hall of Fame granting me this
- 37:14Speaker 9: honor car I was the first game cop the University
- 37:18Speaker 9: of South Carolina game cop to go in. I'm one
- 37:21Speaker 9: half of the first brothers to go in. And what's
- 37:24Speaker 9: really cool is is I got advantage point that a
- 37:26Speaker 9: lot of people don't have. Is I got a guy
- 37:28Speaker 9: who is in justifiably so that wanted it. I will
- 37:32Speaker 9: go out on a limit and say he needed it.
- 37:34Speaker 9: And then you got another guy that's in that was like,
- 37:36Speaker 9: oh my god, I don't want any parts of this.
- 37:38Speaker 9: I don't want what it brings. I don't want what
- 37:40Speaker 9: it looks like. Man, I was minding my business playing golf.
- 37:44Speaker 9: Y'all bothered me with this Hall of Fame else, you know,
- 37:50Speaker 9: and I thought that that go ahead.
- 37:52Speaker 5: And to your point, you know, Randy did not need
- 37:57Speaker 5: any merit to to justify his abilities and whearing what
- 38:05Speaker 5: he was going to be. I get I get that
- 38:09Speaker 5: but for me, hearing some of the things that were
- 38:14Speaker 5: being said some of the people who were just basically
- 38:18Speaker 5: just hating, it made no sense to me.
- 38:22Speaker 3: Bruh like it was like.
- 38:24Speaker 9: But you you also have to understand there are a
- 38:27Speaker 9: lot of people out there who thought that Bob Kraft
- 38:30Speaker 9: and Bill Belichick should have been first ballot Hall of Famers.
- 38:34Speaker 9: They can't tell you one thing about how the Hall
- 38:38Speaker 9: of Fame does their business right, but they may up there.
- 38:42Speaker 9: I'll go out on the list. Randy Moss himself said
- 38:46Speaker 9: on national television that he believes if you didn't coach,
- 38:51Speaker 9: or were GM, or were a player, you shouldn't have
- 38:55Speaker 9: a vote. When you and I had this conversation with
- 38:58Speaker 9: you when we voted for the I never voted for
- 39:01Speaker 9: an offensive player for the Pro Bowl because I never
- 39:04Speaker 9: saw them. I was looking at defensive players, d line, linebacker,
- 39:08Speaker 9: safety is in corners. So if you, if me, as
- 39:11Speaker 9: a Hall of Famer, got to vote, I can tell
- 39:13Speaker 9: you I'm getting ready to screw this thing up. I'm
- 39:16Speaker 9: getting ready because because I can't tell you how good
- 39:22Speaker 9: Chris Hard was, I have no idea how good Andre
- 39:26Speaker 9: Reed or Kim Brown or Jerry Right or Michael Irvin,
- 39:29Speaker 9: the guys that are in the Hall of Fame that
- 39:31Speaker 9: played in my era, because I never saw them. What
- 39:35Speaker 9: I saw was their defense. So you know, you have
- 39:40Speaker 9: to understand too. I mean, I lived twenty some odd
- 39:43Speaker 9: miles from my school. I've never been back from the
- 39:47Speaker 9: University of South Carolina. I've never been back. I've only
- 39:51Speaker 9: been back to Glenville High School when my brother was playing.
- 39:55Speaker 9: I've only been back to Green Bay to get my
- 39:58Speaker 9: Hall of Fame ring. I don't have a grudge against
- 40:02Speaker 9: any of it. It's just that some of us aren't
- 40:05Speaker 9: built that way to where And you know what, man,
- 40:08Speaker 9: Deebo Samuels got to have a great career without me
- 40:11Speaker 9: hovering around and trying to keep him or wanting to
- 40:13Speaker 9: keep him in my shadow. Sidney Rice is a game cop.
- 40:17Speaker 9: Al Sean Jeffery is a game cop. The late Kenny
- 40:20Speaker 9: McKinley is a game cop. They got to have their
- 40:24Speaker 9: own time, just like the players at Glenville High School
- 40:27Speaker 9: got to have their own time. Just like Christian Watson
- 40:30Speaker 9: in Green Bay right now gets to have his own
- 40:32Speaker 9: time because I'm not there trying to hang around and
- 40:36Speaker 9: at least so eloquently put it. I haven't played football
- 40:41Speaker 9: in thirty some years. So there's some dads that may
- 40:45Speaker 9: have seen me play when they were nine, ten, eleven,
- 40:48Speaker 9: but there are a lot of kids in high school
- 40:50Speaker 9: that didn't. And I don't need that to Hey, guess what, man,
- 40:54Speaker 9: Let those guys have their time, because I've gotten all
- 40:58Speaker 9: I'm supposed to get, I believe, from my NFL, from
- 41:01Speaker 9: my college and high school career.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Okay, and again let me let me, let me hit
- 41:06Speaker 5: you with this, and I get all that, and I'm
- 41:09Speaker 5: one hundred percent with you. I look at West when
- 41:13Speaker 5: I think about West Virginia, and again I think about
- 41:15Speaker 5: me as being that kid watching at a great high school,
- 41:21Speaker 5: great college athlete, not knowing he would that he would
- 41:24Speaker 5: go to the pros. But I'm looking at this guy
- 41:27Speaker 5: and he's talking to me and telling me these things
- 41:30Speaker 5: of what I must do and how I must do it,
- 41:34Speaker 5: and I'm like thinking, And then when he he gets
- 41:37Speaker 5: to the pros, I'm like thinking, Man, that's the greatest
- 41:43Speaker 5: achievement in the world. And I don't know anybody else
- 41:48Speaker 5: like that. Like so, when when when Robert went When
- 41:51Speaker 5: when Robert Alexander went.
- 41:53Speaker 3: To the league.
- 41:55Speaker 5: I don't think I did not know a National Football
- 41:59Speaker 5: League player.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Like I knew him.
- 42:03Speaker 5: This, this NFL player, current NFL player that at that
- 42:07Speaker 5: moment is.
- 42:08Speaker 3: Still talking to me.
- 42:10Speaker 5: He's still sitting in my mom's living room getting my
- 42:13Speaker 5: sister to braid his hair. And I'm like thinking, brother,
- 42:16Speaker 5: that's the greatest thing ever. And I want to be
- 42:20Speaker 5: like that. And and I and I and I truly
- 42:24Speaker 5: believe like in in this state, we do need we
- 42:30Speaker 5: do need leadership, we do need encouragement because we we
- 42:36Speaker 5: we sit here and we dream of something and and
- 42:41Speaker 5: we don't but we don't know how to actually get it.
- 42:44Speaker 5: We don't know how to put the work in to
- 42:45Speaker 5: get it because no one's there.
- 42:50Speaker 3: There's nobody there that could help.
- 42:52Speaker 9: Let me, let me jump in. I'm from I'm from
- 42:55Speaker 9: a smaller town than in Charleston and Glennville, Georgia. They
- 42:58Speaker 9: have two pro football players in the Pro Football Hall
- 43:02Speaker 9: of Fame. But the thing is, I think you have
- 43:06Speaker 9: to be careful about pushing that agenda because it's like
- 43:10Speaker 9: Lisa said, if I go back to my well, first
- 43:13Speaker 9: of all, my high school is combined with another high school,
- 43:16Speaker 9: so it ain't even there. But when I go back home,
- 43:19Speaker 9: there's a lot of kids who look at me and
- 43:24Speaker 9: they don't say anything because they really don't know how.
- 43:28Speaker 9: There's a lot of parents because I'm from rural South Georgia.
- 43:31Speaker 9: Let me excuse me, We're from rural South Georgia. There's
- 43:34Speaker 9: a lot of parents that I or grandparents that I
- 43:37Speaker 9: played with in high school that have told the stories
- 43:40Speaker 9: about how bad me and Shanna Num boys were bad.
- 43:44Speaker 9: I'm not gonna say, I'm not going to say embarrassed.
- 43:47Speaker 9: But here I am telling somebody in my household to
- 43:51Speaker 9: listen to what that guy is saying. Who doesn't live
- 43:55Speaker 9: in Glenville anymore, who comes to Glenville once or twice
- 43:59Speaker 9: a month to see it sister and some of his
- 44:01Speaker 9: other family, and then he's out. It's a very fine line.
- 44:06Speaker 9: My brothers used to say it all the time. My
- 44:09Speaker 9: brother used to say because of him, saying because of me,
- 44:12Speaker 9: I never had to look past my own dinner table.
- 44:15Speaker 9: Because of him, I got a chance to see the road,
- 44:19Speaker 9: and the road was easy for me because I saw
- 44:22Speaker 9: him do it. But I saw him every day. I
- 44:24Speaker 9: listened to him every day, I watched him every day.
- 44:27Speaker 9: I talk to him every day. We don't have to
- 44:31Speaker 9: be real. We have to be and we as quote
- 44:34Speaker 9: unquote stars, we got to be very careful because you
- 44:39Speaker 9: can say the wrong words and the wrong phrases and
- 44:42Speaker 9: the wrong setup and you come off as arrogant, where
- 44:46Speaker 9: you come off as unapproachable. So it's a fine line.
- 44:49Speaker 9: It's a very fine line to ask a community to see.
- 44:54Speaker 9: And I will compare it this way. It's very difficult
- 44:57Speaker 9: for me to be upset to Bill Belichi and Robert
- 45:01Speaker 9: Kraft are not first ballot Hall of Famers when one,
- 45:04Speaker 9: I don't know what the criteria is, and more importantly,
- 45:07Speaker 9: I don't know how the voters looked at their career.
- 45:11Speaker 9: I can't be mad that my brother wasn't the first
- 45:15Speaker 9: ballot Hall of Famer because the voters at that time
- 45:18Speaker 9: didn't see his career the way he did. I can't
- 45:21Speaker 9: be mad that they looked at Tarol Owen's career and
- 45:24Speaker 9: he wasn't the first ballot Hall of Famer and have
- 45:26Speaker 9: Tarrell upset because they didn't see Terrell's career the way
- 45:30Speaker 9: Carroll saw. See, that's the fine line that we got
- 45:34Speaker 9: to watch. See. I don't know what the Hall of
- 45:36Speaker 9: Fame criteria is. It's not called the NFL Hall of Famer.
- 45:39Speaker 9: It's the Pro football and they have their own set
- 45:43Speaker 9: of bylaws and how they do business. Who's to say
- 45:48Speaker 9: that they are wrong in their approach. There's a lot
- 45:51Speaker 9: of friends that I live very close to that voted
- 45:55Speaker 9: for a certain guy that we have discussions about. I
- 45:58Speaker 9: can't be mad because they see our country one way
- 46:02Speaker 9: and I see our country another. I can't be mad
- 46:04Speaker 9: at that. We can have discussions and we may even disagree,
- 46:08Speaker 9: but I can't be mad at them because they went
- 46:10Speaker 9: that way and didn't go to waste I wanted them
- 46:13Speaker 9: to go or I feel like they should have done.
- 46:16Speaker 9: I think we have to be very careful when it
- 46:19Speaker 9: comes to athletes because we are we're the most scrutinized,
- 46:24Speaker 9: and we are also because if I tell Glennville that
- 46:28Speaker 9: they need to put statues up of me and shut
- 46:30Speaker 9: in America, you see. So we have to be careful.
- 46:35Speaker 9: And you've known me longer than anybody in Charleston, West Virginia.
- 46:38Speaker 9: Bro I craned yet recognition. I'm like, oh no, no, please,
- 46:43Speaker 9: it's not that spot light over there, because I don't
- 46:45Speaker 9: want any parts of it. But there are some athletes
- 46:48Speaker 9: that need that there are some people that I mean,
- 46:51Speaker 9: I was extremely happy with the seven years I put
- 46:54Speaker 9: off them. There are people that play sixteen years that
- 46:57Speaker 9: are still upset that people don't give them the recognition
- 47:00Speaker 9: they deserve. Whoster who's right and who's wrong. So it's
- 47:04Speaker 9: really difficult to get that person in or to ask
- 47:06Speaker 9: that person, or I'll say, demand that person to come
- 47:10Speaker 9: back and hey, we want to recognize you, or we
- 47:14Speaker 9: need you to lead our other young gents, young girls.
- 47:17Speaker 9: We need you to lead them into what we think
- 47:21Speaker 9: is successful. I wasn't successful because I played football.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Let me let me ask you.
- 47:26Speaker 9: I wanted to play and I got to play.
- 47:28Speaker 6: Let me ask you to interrupt Carl, because Carl's hogging
- 47:31Speaker 6: up all the time with you stolen and not giving
- 47:33Speaker 6: me any minute. I just want to say thank you
- 47:35Speaker 6: for giving me credit. I mean, I'm going to remind
- 47:37Speaker 6: Carl of this, probably on a buy weekly maybe weekly basis.
- 47:42Speaker 11: And she will be I think you and Lisa, I
- 47:46Speaker 11: think you and Matt should be hoping that calendar.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Please write that down somewhere next time I get fired.
- 47:56Speaker 3: That's the commercial.
- 47:57Speaker 5: She's not gonna be here next week, so you you calling.
- 48:04Speaker 9: I'm gonna take.
- 48:09Speaker 3: You've got the phone number?
- 48:10Speaker 7: Now walking papers?
- 48:14Speaker 5: I want to, I want to, I want to ask
- 48:16Speaker 5: you a question. Okay, So when for me personally? Okay,
- 48:24Speaker 5: Like I I truly, I truly understand and feel very
- 48:29Speaker 5: comfortable in.
- 48:33Speaker 3: My space, Like I feel like I've gotten.
- 48:38Speaker 5: All the honors that are due to me where I'm
- 48:43Speaker 5: at at this point? When you when you think of
- 48:49Speaker 5: when you think of players and and and what you
- 48:55Speaker 5: see of them. And I'm not really asking what you
- 48:58Speaker 5: see in me, but how do you decide, like when
- 49:03Speaker 5: you're looking at another player that you've played against, you
- 49:06Speaker 5: you've been around, how do you how do you get
- 49:10Speaker 5: rid of that side of it and just find the
- 49:13Speaker 5: skill set side of it?
- 49:14Speaker 3: If that makes sense?
- 49:17Speaker 9: It's rich. You know, for me, you have a job
- 49:20Speaker 9: to do. And if I understand the job of the
- 49:22Speaker 9: corner in the run game, you don't want anybody outside
- 49:26Speaker 9: your right or left depending on the side you play,
- 49:28Speaker 9: you don't want anybody behind you. And if somebody catches
- 49:32Speaker 9: or makes a run you, you do everything you can
- 49:34Speaker 9: and get them on the ground. When I look at that,
- 49:38Speaker 9: I can decipher between the player and the excitement. I'm
- 49:43Speaker 9: not taking any Hey, I think my Deon Sanders is
- 49:46Speaker 9: one of the more tremendous corners. But I look at
- 49:50Speaker 9: great and I say, there was some deficiencies that you
- 49:55Speaker 9: talked about. You know, I look at players, and when
- 49:59Speaker 9: I look look at the skill set, I'm like, as
- 50:01Speaker 9: a corner, you don't you know. I think Darrell Reeves,
- 50:05Speaker 9: I think Anias Williams, I think Carl Lee. Well, why
- 50:08Speaker 9: would you add Carl Lee in that mixed When I
- 50:10Speaker 9: came in the league, Carl Lee didn't even go to
- 50:12Speaker 9: the hull. He just stood out there because he was like,
- 50:15Speaker 9: I don't care what the call is. I got you,
- 50:17Speaker 9: and I'm gonna make it to the Pro Bowl, or
- 50:20Speaker 9: I'm gonna be an All Pro, or I'm going to
- 50:22Speaker 9: get a contract extension and more money based on what
- 50:26Speaker 9: I do or allow you to do. So I have
- 50:30Speaker 9: the ability to look at a guy and be like,
- 50:32Speaker 9: you know what, And I say this all the time.
- 50:35Speaker 9: Two of the corners that I played against that don't
- 50:37Speaker 9: get the credit they deserve Ricky Reynolds in Tampa and
- 50:41Speaker 9: Darryl Griffin and San Francisco Don Grick excuse me in
- 50:44Speaker 9: San Francisco. But I'm looking at them, they say, well,
- 50:49Speaker 9: two are the best corners? Who was the best corner
- 50:50Speaker 9: you played against? That's hard to say because I wasn't
- 50:53Speaker 9: looking at him like that. I was looking at how
- 50:55Speaker 9: can I sneak and get a catch or grab a
- 50:58Speaker 9: your herd gip over. God, you definitely see that, you know, Carl.
- 51:11Speaker 9: The thing is is we have to and I say we,
- 51:16Speaker 9: I'm not going to have a conversation about who is
- 51:19Speaker 9: the best receiver? Is Randy de Goat? Is Jerry to
- 51:22Speaker 9: Goat is too to go Well, first of all, I
- 51:24Speaker 9: played the position, so I recused myself from asking. You know,
- 51:28Speaker 9: and I think what we do is is we we
- 51:30Speaker 9: have an opinion and then we get angered or upset
- 51:34Speaker 9: when you don't agree with my You don't you know?
- 51:39Speaker 9: My brother, My brother was heartbroken that he wasn't the
- 51:42Speaker 9: first ballot Hall of Famer. And I was with him
- 51:45Speaker 9: when he got the call that says he didn't get
- 51:47Speaker 9: in because that's how they used to do it, uh,
- 51:50Speaker 9: And he was heartbroken. And I said, you're upset that
- 51:54Speaker 9: a group of people that you don't even know didn't
- 51:57Speaker 9: see your career the way you saw because and I'm
- 52:02Speaker 9: going to use the phrase that everybody that's in the
- 52:04Speaker 9: Hall of Fame has said, and Carl, I'm sure you
- 52:06Speaker 9: heard it. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is like
- 52:09Speaker 9: being in heaven. Now do I need to be the
- 52:13Speaker 9: least in heaven? Or do I need to be the most?
- 52:16Speaker 9: Or do I just need he And so if i'm
- 52:25Speaker 9: if i'm you know, it's like that old church, don't
- 52:28Speaker 9: we used to sing, I'm glad to be in the number,
- 52:31Speaker 9: that's all. I'm just glad to be there. And I
- 52:33Speaker 9: think we get caught up with you know, who's the
- 52:35Speaker 9: greatest Lebron or Michael, Who's the go Randy t O,
- 52:40Speaker 9: Larry Fitzgerald or Jerry Right. I think we get caught
- 52:43Speaker 9: up in that, and we we moved the gold posters
- 52:46Speaker 9: athletes so much. And all you have to do is
- 52:48Speaker 9: you listen to some Hall of Fame speeches, or you
- 52:51Speaker 9: listen to guys. Paul, I will invite Lisa to come
- 52:54Speaker 9: in and speak to my class, and I'm gonna read
- 52:57Speaker 9: off a list of her accomplishments. You know what she
- 52:59Speaker 9: gonna do. She gonna want up my accomplishments to let
- 53:02Speaker 9: you know she did some other stuff. You know, right here,
- 53:06Speaker 9: you don't have to exalt yourself. We've already done that.
- 53:11Speaker 9: But that's what we do as athletes. You have to
- 53:15Speaker 9: be careful because I can come in and talk to
- 53:18Speaker 9: your community or your country club or your school, and
- 53:21Speaker 9: I can make me seem untouchable. And I can also
- 53:26Speaker 9: come in and tell you the truth. Hey, look, if
- 53:29Speaker 9: two little black boys from Glenville, Georgia that didn't have
- 53:32Speaker 9: running didn't live in a house with running water, says
- 53:34Speaker 9: nineteen eighty eight, guess what you can get there. Here's
- 53:37Speaker 9: how everybody in your life is in your life to
- 53:41Speaker 9: help you get to where you want to go. Now,
- 53:44Speaker 9: there are some things you gotta do. But for the
- 53:47Speaker 9: most part, if you pick a dream or a goal,
- 53:50Speaker 9: and I always say a dream is a gift you
- 53:52Speaker 9: give to yourself. If you pick that and you stay
- 53:55Speaker 9: on the path, you'll be shocked at the number of people.
- 53:58Speaker 9: I met Carl Lee playing against it. He's one of
- 54:01Speaker 9: my best friends. Well, how did that work out? I said,
- 54:04Speaker 9: We didn't slack off each other at the jersey.
- 54:08Speaker 5: There's no question I'm thinking I'm getting a little more
- 54:11Speaker 5: mad because you called me, and I remember that you
- 54:14Speaker 5: did for my jersey.
- 54:16Speaker 3: We might be losing a friendship because you called it.
- 54:20Speaker 9: But but you know what, we always come back together.
- 54:24Speaker 9: We always come back together thing, man, And I tell
- 54:28Speaker 9: people all the time. Matt Lafleur, the head coach of
- 54:32Speaker 9: the Green Bay Packers, says, Man, I really want you
- 54:34Speaker 9: to come and talk to the team, really want you to.
- 54:37Speaker 9: And I'm saying to myself.
- 54:38Speaker 3: Do youse?
- 54:39Speaker 9: Guys went through high school, went through college and are
- 54:43Speaker 9: in the NFL without me, And I said, Man, I
- 54:47Speaker 9: would I cringe because I'm like, what do you want
- 54:51Speaker 9: me to tell them? Because guess what they're doing exactly
- 54:55Speaker 9: what I did. I don't know if they're doing it
- 54:58Speaker 9: like I did it, but they are. They're in, they're
- 55:02Speaker 9: they're part of the best football players in the world.
- 55:06Speaker 9: And you want me to come in and do I said,
- 55:08Speaker 9: because you know I got some friends in that locker
- 55:10Speaker 9: room and Christian Watson and Jordan Love you going to
- 55:13Speaker 9: have me come in and have them thinking this need
- 55:16Speaker 9: grow here? Think he better than that? And I don't
- 55:19Speaker 9: want I want I want. I want them to continue
- 55:24Speaker 9: to grow on their path, their way because here's the
- 55:27Speaker 9: epty bottom line. And Carl, you and I had this
- 55:30Speaker 9: conversation a week or so ago about what's for you.
- 55:34Speaker 9: I don't care what anybody does or says. You're gonna
- 55:36Speaker 9: get it. And if it's for me, if it's for
- 55:40Speaker 9: me to come to Charleston and talk to the community center,
- 55:43Speaker 9: it's going to happen. And there's nothing no one can
- 55:45Speaker 9: do about it. And I don't know how many people
- 55:49Speaker 9: are going to be touched or I told you, I
- 55:52Speaker 9: see people all the time that was like, Man, I
- 55:53Speaker 9: went to your football camp, and the one thing I
- 55:56Speaker 9: learned was this, if I really want to do something,
- 55:59Speaker 9: I better be committed. I better be because you your football
- 56:03Speaker 9: game was the hardest thing I ever did, but it
- 56:05Speaker 9: was the best thing I ever did. And I said
- 56:08Speaker 9: I did it on purpose. I made it. I tried
- 56:10Speaker 9: to make it unbearable because I didn't want rit rapping
- 56:13Speaker 9: my sport. I didn't want you to accidentally fall into
- 56:17Speaker 9: the NFL.
- 56:18Speaker 5: And yeah, yeah, players are are former players are very
- 56:22Speaker 5: particular when it comes to who gets in and who
- 56:27Speaker 5: gets some props because you got to earn those props
- 56:32Speaker 5: because we had to earn them.
- 56:34Speaker 9: I agree, I agree. And the thing is is I
- 56:38Speaker 9: can't hold you accountable in today's game like I would
- 56:41Speaker 9: hold a Jerry Rice or Michael Irvin or Andre Reid
- 56:45Speaker 9: or Chris Carter in yesterday's game. That's unfair to them.
- 56:49Speaker 6: And I really liked the way Sterling you you came
- 56:51Speaker 6: full circle in about the individual and some have, you know,
- 56:56Speaker 6: the need to be recognized and others don't. And and
- 57:00Speaker 6: what you also said about what's meant for you what happened,
- 57:04Speaker 6: And so people have to kind of instead of judging
- 57:08Speaker 6: these athletes for not coming back or not doing whatever
- 57:12Speaker 6: they think they should be doing, they need to understand
- 57:15Speaker 6: that that's their individual preference and it's nothing for or
- 57:19Speaker 6: against where they grew up.
- 57:20Speaker 7: It's just the way they are.
- 57:22Speaker 9: It's just what they No one in Lisa, No one
- 57:26Speaker 9: in my family had gone to college. What made me
- 57:28Speaker 9: think I could go? No one in my family had
- 57:31Speaker 9: played college sports? What made me think I could do it?
- 57:34Speaker 9: No one in my family graduated from college? What made
- 57:37Speaker 9: me think I could do it? What made me think
- 57:40Speaker 9: was is you can do anything that you put your
- 57:43Speaker 9: mind to, and if you pay attention, everyone in your
- 57:47Speaker 9: life is in your life to help you achieve that goal.
- 57:52Speaker 9: Because the life of you living son you want to
- 57:54Speaker 9: go play in the NFL, that an't about you. You
- 57:56Speaker 9: never know who's watching you. And I've always said this
- 58:00Speaker 9: because it was said to us. If you have to
- 58:02Speaker 9: tell someone what you did, then you probably didn't do anything.
- 58:10Speaker 9: A lot but a lot of people will tell you
- 58:14Speaker 9: how good they were. A lot of people will And
- 58:17Speaker 9: I'm like, well, if you're telling me, then I guess
- 58:20Speaker 9: that must be so if you tell you. But but
- 58:25Speaker 9: most people, most people, and I say this to parents
- 58:29Speaker 9: all the time, do not allow me to take your place.
- 58:34Speaker 9: Do not slide me in front of your kids to
- 58:36Speaker 9: take your place, because at some point you may be
- 58:42Speaker 9: disappointed on that ring of or in that stage where
- 58:46Speaker 9: they getting to thank all the people that helped them
- 58:48Speaker 9: get there, and you ain't first, second, or third or
- 58:50Speaker 9: fifth tell you what it hurts. And you know the
- 58:55Speaker 9: thing is, and I'm telling this last story. I'm gonna
- 58:58Speaker 9: let you guys talk. And I was on my journey
- 59:01Speaker 9: to the NFL. It wasn't important for my family to
- 59:04Speaker 9: come see me play. They didn't understand what it was football. Man,
- 59:08Speaker 9: I'm not going to sit no stands and watch you
- 59:10Speaker 9: run up and down and chase the ball because they
- 59:12Speaker 9: didn't understand it. But then when my brother started to play,
- 59:18Speaker 9: they understood it better. So here I am in the
- 59:21Speaker 9: University of South Carolina and I'm going out doing my
- 59:24Speaker 9: thing because it's what I wanted to do. And my family,
- 59:27Speaker 9: being an hour from Savannah, was at Savannah State every
- 59:30Speaker 9: weekend watching him play. Now, if I was like, if
- 59:36Speaker 9: I was normal, I would be upset at my family
- 59:39Speaker 9: for doing that. But it wasn't their dream. I was
- 59:43Speaker 9: fulfilling mind. So whether you participated or you didn't, that
- 59:48Speaker 9: didn't bother me because I was on the path I
- 59:51Speaker 9: wanted to be on. And when I got in the
- 59:54Speaker 9: league and I got to play against the Carl LEAs
- 59:58Speaker 9: and the Ike Hoats and Hanford dixons in, the Frank
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: Manifield and the Albert lewis Is and the Kevin Rosses
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: that played straight up zero help, bump and run. I
- 1:00:08Speaker 9: got to learn and develop. And then as the league
- 1:00:11Speaker 9: started to change, Carl and I getting to a Pro Bowl,
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: We're hanging out together. I'm getting to know his family,
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: getting to know mine. U Carl and I getting I'm
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: coming to his football stuff. You coming to mind, so
- 1:00:24Speaker 9: you get a chance to develop. And it's funny, he
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: and I are a lot of light. I'm a lot small.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: That is not I don't know where that'll get cut out, Lisa.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: We're both getting I.
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: Think so, except I think they're going to change the
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: name of the podcast to Let's Talk with Sterling.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Sure, I think so.
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: I can tell you. I can tell you who's not
- 1:00:54Speaker 9: gonna be on.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: We're not gonna have before we get out of here.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: We are we are, I don't know. We are hanging
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: with you.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: So just so you know, you, all the listeners who
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: stayed this long with us, we are hanging up on
- 1:01:14Speaker 5: a Hall of Fame player like that.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: Love you boy, I'll see you later, all right, man,
