- 0:00I've participated in competitive athletics since I was a young
- 0:04boy. Over the years I have developed
- 0:07a love hate relationship with running.
- 0:10I love the physical benefits and mental exhilaration, but I hate
- 0:16the sore muscles, aching lungs and exhaustion.
- 0:19As I have come to the end of many of my long distance runs, I
- 0:23have exhorted myself to push on, hang on, and endure to the end.
- 0:29In relation to physical exercise, the word endure
- 0:32suggests maintaining intense physical and mental effort over
- 0:37an extended period of time. Many of us also may associate
- 0:41the word endure with the unpleasant drudgery of routine
- 0:46work and responsibilities. But in a spiritual context,
- 0:51enduring is far more then merely persevering tenaciously to
- 0:56complete demanding duties or challenges.
- 0:59The scriptures highlight instructive uses of the word
- 1:03endure. For example, the Lord declared
- 1:05to the Nephites, Look unto me and endure to the end, and you
- 1:10shall live, For unto him that endureth to the end will I give
- 1:15eternal life. Mormon testified that charity is
- 1:18the pure love of Christ and the greatest of all spiritual gifts.
- 1:23Significantly, the word endure is used in the scriptures to
- 1:28define and describe charity. Charity endureth forever,
- 1:33suffereth long, seeketh not her own, beareth all things endureth
- 1:39all things. Charity never faileth.
- 1:42Mormon taught that whoso is found possessed of the spiritual
- 1:46gift of charity at the last day, it shall be well with him.
- 1:51We can possess charity, but ultimately charity should
- 1:54possess us. As we are blessed to receive
- 1:58this supernal gift, a transformation occurs in our
- 2:01spiritual nature and character. Being possessed of the spiritual
- 2:06gift of charity refers in part to the spiritual development and
- 2:11progress that are the overarching purposes of the
- 2:14Savior's Gospel. For Disciples of the Savior,
- 2:18charity encompasses both what we do and what we can become, as
- 2:23this spiritual gift ultimately possesses us.
- 2:27At a fundamental level, charity certainly includes acts of
- 2:30compassion, kindness, and generosity directed toward
- 2:35others. But at a higher and even holier
- 2:38level, charity is the very essence of the end toward which
- 2:44we are enduring, becoming new creatures in Christ.
- 2:50Please consider how these two overarching dimensions of
- 2:53charity are described in the 13th article of Faith.
- 2:58The first half of the statement emphasizes charitable and
- 3:01gracious acts. We believe in being honest,
- 3:05true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to
- 3:09all men. The second-half of the statement
- 3:14emphasizes the ongoing nature of our spiritual transformation.
- 3:19We believe all things. We hope all things.
- 3:21We have endured many things and hope to be able to endure all
- 3:27things. If there was anything virtuous,
- 3:30lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after
- 3:34these things. This concluding article of faith
- 3:39is an admonition for us to do good, to be good, and to endure
- 3:44to the end in coming unto and following the Savior and
- 3:49receiving the heavenly gift to love as He loves.
- 3:54The Savior's divine nature and sublime character were the
- 3:57wellsprings of perfect compassion during His mortal
- 4:00ministry. The Redeemer of the world turned
- 4:04outward in love and service when he faced spiritual adversity or
- 4:09physical pain, in contrast to the natural man in each of us
- 4:14that turns inward in self-interest, self
- 4:17centeredness, and selfishness. As we live, as He invites us to
- 4:22live, and with His help, our nature and character over time
- 4:28increasingly become more like His.
- 4:31As we follow, love and serve the Savior, we gradually focus less
- 4:36on our own desires and interests and more on understanding and
- 4:41addressing the needs of others. We do not merely perform
- 4:45benevolent deeds, rather our state of being is changed and
- 4:50becomes increasingly Christ like charity then ultimately
- 4:56possesses us. Wherefore pray unto the Father
- 5:00with all the energy of heart, that she may be filled with this
- 5:03love, that when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we
- 5:09shall see Him as He is. I'm now going to read 3
- 5:13scriptures that contain the phrase endure to the end.
- 5:17I will insert the phrase is possessed of the pure love of
- 5:20Christ in each verse so we can learn a vital and eternal
- 5:25lesson. 1 The Savior taught his ancient apostles, he that
- 5:30endureth to the end or is possessed of the pure love of
- 5:34Christ shall be saved. 2 Nephi testified, I heard a voice from
- 5:41the Father saying, Yeah, the words of my beloved are true and
- 5:44faithful. He that endureth to the end, or
- 5:49is possessed of the pure love of Christ, the same shall be saved.
- 5:543 Alma declared, He that findeth mercy and endureth to the end,
- 6:00or is possessed of the pure love of Christ, the same shall be
- 6:05saved. Enduring to the end is linked
- 6:08inextricably to the spiritual gift of charity.
- 6:12Enduring to the end is not merely A relentless
- 6:17determination to grit our teeth, hold on to the limits of our
- 6:21physical strength and mental capacity, and push through the
- 6:25challenges and adversities of mortal life.
- 6:28It is so much more than that. Enduring to the end is the
- 6:35joyous quest of a lifetime, a pressing forward with faith in
- 6:40Jesus Christ, in a gradual process of trusting in and
- 6:44receiving help from our Savior to become more like Him.
- 6:49As our love for Him grows ever stronger and deeper, we can be
- 6:54blessed to receive spiritual perspective, the Lord's
- 6:58empowering grace, an exceedingly great and indescribable joy.
- 7:05The scriptural phrase endure to the end is a repeated reminder
- 7:10of the mighty spiritual change in our hearts that should be
- 7:14ongoing throughout our lives. It also is His promise of what
- 7:19we may become if we truly are possessed of the pure love of
- 7:24Christ the Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith.
- 7:29All Thrones and dominions, principalities and powers shall
- 7:33be revealed and set forth upon all who have endured valiantly
- 7:39for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I joyfully witness that each of
- 7:46us, with the Lord's grace and mercy, can believe all things,
- 7:50hope all things, and endure valiantly all things.
- 7:56I so testify in the sacred name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
