Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. Episode forty-seven — can you believe it? Luna: I know, right? It feels like just yesterday we were learning 'hello.' Now we're practically pros. Lucas: You are a pro. Speaking of yesterday — that was a perfect connection. Today we're talking about the weather. Specifically, two very useful words: sunny and rainy. Luna: Oh, perfect. Because it's been raining nonstop here. I need to complain in Amharic! Lucas: Well, you're in luck. First word: sunny. In Amharic, it's ፀሐያማ. Let me say it slowly: ፀሐያማ. Luna: ፀሐያማ. Lucas: Almost. The first sound is a bit like 'ts.' Listen: ፀሐያማ. Luna: ፀሐያማ. Lucas: Yes! That's it. So if you want to say 'today is sunny,' you say ዛሬ ፀሐያማ ነው. ዛሬ ፀሐያማ ነው. Luna: ዛሬ ፀሐያማ ነው. That's pretty straightforward — ዛሬ is today, ፀሐያማ is sunny, ነው is 'is.' Lucas: Exactly. Now the opposite: rainy. In Amharic, it's ዝናባማ. Say it with me: ዝናባማ. Luna: ዝናባማ. That one feels easier — maybe because it's raining so much I've been practicing. Lucas: Nice. Now, to say 'yesterday was rainy,' we use our word for yesterday: ትላንትና. So ትላንትና ዝናባማ ነበር. Luna: ትላንትና ዝናባማ ነበር. And ነበር is 'was' — from our episode on past tense. I remember! Lucas: See? You're connecting dots. Okay, let's do a little back and forth. I'll say a weather phrase, and you tell me what it means or respond. Luna: Bring it on. Lucas: ዛሬ ዝናባማ ነው. Luna: That means 'today is rainy.' And I would say... ዛሬ ዝናባማ ነው, እጠባለሁ? No, that's not right. Lucas: Close. You could say 'I need an umbrella' but we haven't learned that yet. How about just responding with agreement: አዎ, ዝናባማ ነው. Luna: አዎ, ዝናባማ ነው. Yes, it's rainy. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's add a question. To ask 'what will tomorrow be?' you can say ነገ ምን ይሆናል? ነገ ምን ይሆናል? Luna: ነገ ምን ይሆናል? That's a great phrase. So if I want to ask about tomorrow's weather, I use that. Lucas: Exactly. So let's practice a mini conversation. I'll be a friend, you ask me about tomorrow's weather. Luna: Okay. ነገ ምን ይሆናል? Lucas: ነገ ፀሐያማ ይሆናል. Tomorrow will be sunny. ፀሐያማ ይሆናል. Luna: ነገ ፀሐያማ ይሆናል. That's great! I can use ይሆናል for future — 'will be.' Lucas: You got it. Now, let's put it all together. Tell me: 'Today is sunny. Yesterday was rainy. What will tomorrow be?' Luna: Let me try... ዛሬ ፀሐያማ ነው. ትላንትና ዝናባማ ነበር. ነገ ምን ይሆናል? Lucas: Wow, that was perfect. I'm impressed. Luna: Thanks! I've been practicing at home. But honestly, I still mix up ፀሐያማ and ዝናባማ sometimes. Lucas: That's totally normal. A trick: ዝናባማ starts with ዝ, like 'z' — think 'zap, rain.' And ፀሐያማ has that 'ts' sound — think 'tsunny' for sunny. Luna: Ohh, ፀሐያማ sounds like 'tsunny' — that's cheesy but I'll remember it. Lucas: Cheesy is good. So, let's do one more round. I'll describe a weather situation, you say it in Amharic. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Yesterday was sunny. Luna: ትላንትና ፀሐያማ ነበር. Lucas: Today is rainy. Luna: ዛሬ ዝናባማ ነው. Lucas: Tomorrow will be sunny. Luna: ነገ ፀሐያማ ይሆናል. Lucas: You nailed all three. That's the end of our lesson for today. Now you can describe the weather in Amharic, ask about tomorrow, and even complain about rain — which Luna seems to enjoy. Luna: I do! It's good practice. Thanks Lucas, and thanks to Fexingo for another fun episode. Lucas: Yes, keep practicing with Fexingo. We have new episodes every week. Until next time — ደህና ሁኑ. Luna: ደህና ሁኑ! Bye everyone.
