- 0:41Speaker 1: Welcome to the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show, the longest
- 0:45Speaker 1: running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world, twelve
- 0:48Speaker 1: years strong. As we are celebrating and commemorating twelve years
- 0:52Speaker 1: of the PSD podcast show this month here in April,
- 0:56Speaker 1: it is great to be in your ears if you
- 0:59Speaker 1: are listening on a podcast platform, whatever podcast platform, that is.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Hello to our YouTube viewers out there, it is great
- 1:07Speaker 1: to see you. This week, we have a bit of
- 1:10Speaker 1: an abbreviated show. As you will see, there are no
- 1:13Speaker 1: co hosts with me this week. Some scheduling issues have
- 1:17Speaker 1: not allowed them to join us, but we're going to
- 1:20Speaker 1: get into some Phillies talks, some brief Phillies talk right
- 1:23Speaker 1: off the bat, and then we have a great guest
- 1:25Speaker 1: joining us this week on the show to get into
- 1:27Speaker 1: this upcoming Flyers offseason and what the long term future
- 1:32Speaker 1: is going to be for this Flyers organization and team,
- 1:36Speaker 1: Ryan Gilbert from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com and the broad
- 1:39Speaker 1: Street Hockey Podcast. He is going to join us to
- 1:42Speaker 1: get into the press or this past week from Danny Brieir,
- 1:45Speaker 1: the direction of this team, the goalie situation, what this
- 1:49Speaker 1: upcoming NHL draft is going to look like for the Flyers,
- 1:53Speaker 1: what type of strategies that they're going to be looking
- 1:55Speaker 1: at as they continue to build for the future. Can't
- 1:59Speaker 1: wait for that discussion with Ryan, so stick around for that,
- 2:03Speaker 1: But I want to get into the Philadelphia Phillies and
- 2:05Speaker 1: their season thus far, right out of the gate strong.
- 2:08Speaker 1: They are first three series of the year. They won.
- 2:11Speaker 1: As we know, we were all feeling good, feeling great,
- 2:14Speaker 1: feeling confident about this team. They were able to compete
- 2:18Speaker 1: with the Dodgers. We saw that, and then as we know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: things have dramatically fallen off in just about every area,
- 2:27Speaker 1: whether it's starting pitching, whether it's the bullpen, whether it's
- 2:31Speaker 1: in the batter's box, runners in scoring position as well.
- 2:35Speaker 1: We know that that has been a challenge for this team. Recently,
- 2:39Speaker 1: I was on the Hit and Season podcast with our
- 2:41Speaker 1: good friend and buddy John Stalness, who's appeared on the
- 2:43Speaker 1: PST podcast show a number of times over the years.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We talked about the state of this team and we
- 2:48Speaker 1: dove into a lot of these themes here that I
- 2:52Speaker 1: just mentioned. You'll want to go check out the Hitt
- 2:54Speaker 1: and Season podcast as well. But also with regard to
- 2:57Speaker 1: our discussion here, I think It's important to note that
- 2:59Speaker 1: they're are so many questions concerning this bullpen, and right
- 3:03Speaker 1: now the Philadelphia Phillies are missing two high leverage relievers.
- 3:09Speaker 1: They are missing Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez from a
- 3:13Speaker 1: season ago. Both are thriving right now in their new homes.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Jeff Hoffman right now, he's got a one point five
- 3:20Speaker 1: to nine ERA in ten appearances with five saves for Toronto.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And meanwhile, Carlos Estevez, he's got a zero point nine
- 3:30Speaker 1: zero ERA in nine games for Kansas City and he's
- 3:33Speaker 1: got five games as well. Look, Ryan Kirkering, he has
- 3:37Speaker 1: been struggling trying to find that one pitch that is
- 3:40Speaker 1: really going to be able to help him, that one
- 3:42Speaker 1: pitch in his arsenal that is going to be able
- 3:45Speaker 1: to get him out of certain situations and get the
- 3:47Speaker 1: team out of certain situations that they're in later in games.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Matt Strom doing very well this year. Jose Alvarado doing
- 3:56Speaker 1: very well this year. The sky's not necessarily falling when
- 3:59Speaker 1: it comes to those two individuals. But really, let's talk
- 4:03Speaker 1: about the one gentleman who is really not helping this
- 4:06Speaker 1: team at all. Jordan Romano. My goodness, a rough start
- 4:10Speaker 1: to this season, but as we have seen over the
- 4:12Speaker 1: course of these past few games, his velocity has actually
- 4:16Speaker 1: been increasing, yet still having issues on the mound. He
- 4:22Speaker 1: can't be trusted. And it really goes towards this theme
- 4:26Speaker 1: of this Phillies bullpen of who are they? What is
- 4:28Speaker 1: their identity? They don't have one at this point, folks,
- 4:31Speaker 1: they do not have an identity. In fact, I think
- 4:34Speaker 1: that could be said for the entire Phillies team. At
- 4:37Speaker 1: this point. The Phillies are so desperate for some bullpen
- 4:41Speaker 1: help that they have officially moved starting pitching prospects Seth
- 4:45Speaker 1: Johnson to the bullpen. He was acquired last summer, if
- 4:48Speaker 1: you remember, in the Gregory Soto deal with the Orioles.
- 4:51Speaker 1: He appeared in eight games across the Phillies organization last
- 4:55Speaker 1: year following the trade. He has made four starts this
- 4:59Speaker 1: year in Triple A had a four point four to
- 5:02Speaker 1: two ERA across eighteen and one thirds innings that have
- 5:06Speaker 1: been pitched. He made his debut out of the bullpen
- 5:09Speaker 1: this past Tuesday night and went two hitless innings while
- 5:12Speaker 1: striking out to and walking to so from reports, the
- 5:17Speaker 1: Phillies believe that his fastball was able to get up
- 5:20Speaker 1: to about ninety eight miles per hour as a reliever,
- 5:23Speaker 1: averaged around ninety six miles per hour last season along
- 5:27Speaker 1: with his slider and what that has been coming out
- 5:30Speaker 1: of the bullpen. So the key for Seth Johnson is
- 5:33Speaker 1: gonna be limiting walks. We're gonna have to see how
- 5:36Speaker 1: this goes again. We know the Phillies bullpen can certainly
- 5:40Speaker 1: use all the help it can get, as they have
- 5:43Speaker 1: entered and are going to be entering this coming series
- 5:47Speaker 1: against the Chicago Cubs, the second worst bullpen in Major
- 5:51Speaker 1: League Baseball with a five point seven zero ERA. Something
- 5:56Speaker 1: has to be done. But you also look at the
- 5:58Speaker 1: starting pitching and it's it's really bizarre what we have
- 6:02Speaker 1: seen from Aaron Nola. Maybe it isn't bizarre because in
- 6:07Speaker 1: odd number years as we are in now, Aaron Nola
- 6:09Speaker 1: struggles in even number years, Folks, not sure if you
- 6:12Speaker 1: know this. He thrives, He pitches so well in even
- 6:18Speaker 1: number year. It is the most bizarre thing that I
- 6:20Speaker 1: have ever seen, I think in Major League Baseball, specifically
- 6:24Speaker 1: from a pitching perspective. Aaron Nola is struggling. Zach Wheeler
- 6:29Speaker 1: isn't having the best season. Thankfully, Christopher Sanchez has been
- 6:32Speaker 1: the quote ace of this starting rotation and now he's
- 6:36Speaker 1: dealing with an injury. They need to massage that injury
- 6:40Speaker 1: so well to make sure that he is able to
- 6:42Speaker 1: come back and have no issues with that forearm at all.
- 6:46Speaker 1: When we talk about the batting on this team as well,
- 6:51Speaker 1: I just think the runners in scoring position situation that
- 6:54Speaker 1: this team has been in, and we talked about it
- 6:56Speaker 1: last week with Destiny Legardo on the show in our discussion,
- 7:01Speaker 1: it's a lack of execution. It's a lack of situational
- 7:04Speaker 1: awareness from this team, and that really is the most
- 7:06Speaker 1: disturbing part because you have veterans on this team who
- 7:09Speaker 1: have been around this game a very long time and
- 7:12Speaker 1: should have a better understanding of situational baseball. At the
- 7:16Speaker 1: end of the day, they don't. Trey Turner, even Bryce
- 7:22Speaker 1: Harper has said, you know that the time is coming
- 7:26Speaker 1: or the time has come at this moment to stop saying, Okay,
- 7:29Speaker 1: it's early in the season. They need to perform. They
- 7:32Speaker 1: are veterans. They know what's at stake right now. At
- 7:35Speaker 1: this point of us recording this, they're five games behind
- 7:38Speaker 1: the New York Mets, who quite frankly, they've got all
- 7:41Speaker 1: the vibes right now, don't they. Man This team, they're
- 7:45Speaker 1: actually their fan base has actually been critical of Juan
- 7:49Speaker 1: Soto as late because of his ops numbers. I don't
- 7:54Speaker 1: know things they are seeming to working, seemingly working out
- 7:57Speaker 1: for the Mets at this point. Soh With that being said, folks,
- 8:02Speaker 1: this team, this Phillies team, from an overall picture, they
- 8:06Speaker 1: do not have an identity. They do not know who
- 8:09Speaker 1: they are, and I think that's a problem. My level
- 8:12Speaker 1: of concern is probably around a five to six at
- 8:15Speaker 1: this moment. I'm not one hundred percent sure that these
- 8:19Speaker 1: guys are gonna be able to get out of their heads.
- 8:21Speaker 1: The sports psychology aspect of the game of baseball has
- 8:25Speaker 1: really been taking its toll on this team. This team
- 8:28Speaker 1: who has so much experience under their belts, just can't
- 8:33Speaker 1: seem to find that identity. And there is an issue
- 8:37Speaker 1: with that. There's a major issue with that. So we're
- 8:40Speaker 1: gonna keep following this team. We're gonna keep following the
- 8:42Speaker 1: Phillies moves that they make. They're gonna have to do
- 8:44Speaker 1: something in terms of the bullpen, and bullpen needs a
- 8:47Speaker 1: spark for sure. This team needs a spark at the
- 8:50Speaker 1: end of the day overall, but we're gonna keep on
- 8:52Speaker 1: it here at the PST podcast show. So with that
- 8:55Speaker 1: being said, again, we have an abbreviated show there here
- 8:58Speaker 1: this week. We are gonna be talking to Ryan Gilbert
- 9:01Speaker 1: from broad Street Hockey dot Com and the broad Street
- 9:04Speaker 1: Hockey Podcast in just a few seconds here, but we
- 9:07Speaker 1: do want to take a break and we're gonna be
- 9:10Speaker 1: back in just a bit. We're gonna have a lot
- 9:11Speaker 1: of great Flyers talk and now on the table joining
- 9:19Speaker 1: us this week from broad Street Hockey dot Com. And
- 9:22Speaker 1: you can also listen to his voice over at the
- 9:25Speaker 1: broad Street Hockey Podcast. I listen on Apple Podcasts and
- 9:29Speaker 1: you can listen on whatever podcast platform you are listening
- 9:31Speaker 1: to us on. And it is great to see him.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Great to have him in his little studio as he
- 9:38Speaker 1: is coming into my little studio to get into this
- 9:41Speaker 1: Flyers off season. Thank goodness, we've got the one and
- 9:44Speaker 1: only Ryan Gilbert.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Hey you doing buddy, I'm doing good. I always a
- 9:48Speaker 2: pleasure to join you here, Jeff, first time here on
- 9:51Speaker 2: video with you. So this is a big step up.
- 9:54Speaker 1: It is a stream yard here.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I like seeing it but yeah, you know, I mean,
- 9:57Speaker 2: I wish we were talking about the playoffs or something else.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I know, you got to go through the lows to
- 10:02Speaker 2: enjoy the highs. Exactly another rebuild, Yet.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Exactly how many lows do we have to go through
- 10:08Speaker 1: in Flyers Nation? It is constant, right.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It seems like a lot of lows for years, decades.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Absolutely, absolutely we're going to get into some of those lows, folks.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Don't you worry. We're going to be getting there. On
- 10:22Speaker 1: this discussion and within this podcast episode. Well, I want
- 10:26Speaker 1: to dive into some of the reflections of this past
- 10:29Speaker 1: season with you, Ryan. We saw some good things, we
- 10:33Speaker 1: saw some not so good things, a lot of not
- 10:35Speaker 1: so good things here. So I want to get into
- 10:38Speaker 1: both to get this discussion started, because I think we
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of have to dissect what we saw this past
- 10:42Speaker 1: season and evaluate where that goes in terms of what
- 10:47Speaker 1: we should be seeing for this Flyers team and organization
- 10:51Speaker 1: during this coming off season. So let's let's let's get
- 10:54Speaker 1: into the negative aspects of what this season was here first.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And yes, there were certainly a bunch of them, of course,
- 11:01Speaker 1: John Tortorella being one of them. I know you and
- 11:03Speaker 1: I both and the majority of Flyers Nation. We were
- 11:07Speaker 1: very happy when he was relieved of his duties as
- 11:09Speaker 1: head coach of this team. And I even though he
- 11:13Speaker 1: was a negative, that was an actual positive in my mind,
- 11:16Speaker 1: being able to really start or at least the front
- 11:20Speaker 1: office having the opportunity to start thinking about where they
- 11:24Speaker 1: want to take this team and who's going to lead
- 11:26Speaker 1: it in the future. But let's get into some of
- 11:29Speaker 1: your negatives here, because I was and that was actually
- 11:31Speaker 1: more of a prop positive with John Tortorella not being here.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So notable negatives of this season. What are some of
- 11:38Speaker 1: those for you?
- 11:39Speaker 2: Well, the obvious thing is the goaltending, but we're gonna
- 11:42Speaker 2: get it right a little bit, so, I mean the
- 11:44Speaker 2: other pretty obvious thing is the power play and it
- 11:46Speaker 2: just seems to be year after year, no matter what
- 11:50Speaker 2: the personnel is. I mean, it's been Rocky Thompson has
- 11:53Speaker 2: been coaching for a few years now. The Flyers have had,
- 11:56Speaker 2: you know, close Little League Worst power Play brierre joke.
- 11:59Speaker 2: They took a bait be stepped from twelve percent to
- 12:01Speaker 2: fifteen percent, which it was good to see. Have a
- 12:04Speaker 2: meetch cooff there. But you have all these talented players
- 12:07Speaker 2: you have meach Coff, you have Connectne, you have Forster
- 12:09Speaker 2: take a step forward, you have Drysdale now could be
- 12:12Speaker 2: on the point, like, you have these guys who you
- 12:14Speaker 2: really want to see more out of on special teams
- 12:17Speaker 2: and penalty kill too, but I mean primarily the power play,
- 12:20Speaker 2: like and it took them till the final weeks of
- 12:22Speaker 2: the season to finally try out that five forward power play. Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: briera said he liked, but why not try that earlier
- 12:28Speaker 2: when you're oerver twenty or whatever you are. But the
- 12:31Speaker 2: power play is always going to be a big thing
- 12:33Speaker 2: because you watch these playoffs and you see these teams
- 12:36Speaker 2: they go on a power play and it's a huge
- 12:37Speaker 2: opportunity for them and for the Flyers. It was just like,
- 12:40Speaker 2: all right, another power play. Let's hope they don't get
- 12:42Speaker 2: scored on.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Right exactly, And I think that when we look at
- 12:46Speaker 1: the positives. Of course, I had mentioned John Tortorell being
- 12:50Speaker 1: relieved of his duties as head coach, mattve Beachkoff coming
- 12:54Speaker 1: to the United States making a significant impact. I mean
- 12:58Speaker 1: Danny brier and his presser this past week's I can't
- 13:00Speaker 1: believe the guy was actually as good as he was
- 13:02Speaker 1: I think he'd scored twenty goals, so I think he
- 13:05Speaker 1: said that if I'm not mistaken in your mind, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 1: I think Matt ve Mitchkoff is really the answer of
- 13:11Speaker 1: the more positive takeaways from this past season. Aside from him.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Are there any others that really come to mind for
- 13:17Speaker 1: you that you can say, you know what, this was
- 13:19Speaker 1: a good foundational piece, this was a positive from this season.
- 13:23Speaker 2: There's actually a lot of them, which is surprising because
- 13:26Speaker 2: they were the fourth worst team, the fourth lowest point
- 13:28Speaker 2: so the fourth best draft odds. But ye, Mitchkoff is
- 13:30Speaker 2: the obvious one. Tyson Forster had a tremendous season, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: really that whole line, the Forster, yeah, Noah Kates and
- 13:37Speaker 2: Bobby Brink. That line got put together in late November.
- 13:40Speaker 2: They were taking apart for a little bit here and there,
- 13:43Speaker 2: but they were primarily put together and looked like a
- 13:45Speaker 2: legit like third line on a good team, a second
- 13:48Speaker 2: line for the Flyers, but a good third line on
- 13:50Speaker 2: a good team. And then you see that Forster scoring
- 13:53Speaker 2: barrage at the end of the season, the hat trick
- 13:55Speaker 2: against the Rangers, a few good snipes in their two goals.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Another two goal games. So you really see Forrester as
- 14:02Speaker 2: a guy who, you know, a first round pick, you
- 14:05Speaker 2: came in, you know, known for his shot, not being
- 14:07Speaker 2: a great skater, and he's turning into one of the
- 14:10Speaker 2: best two way players on the team. And I think
- 14:12Speaker 2: he's starting to get recognition around the league there. And
- 14:15Speaker 2: also on defense, like there's no defenseman that you're like,
- 14:19Speaker 2: I don't want to see him out there right now.
- 14:20Speaker 2: That's a really good point.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 14:24Speaker 2: They have three decent pairs. There's no bad pair. There's
- 14:26Speaker 2: no there's no Andrew McDonald or keith Yandle or someone
- 14:30Speaker 2: like that. It's like, okay, third pair, Zamoula, andre I
- 14:33Speaker 2: don't love it, but you can deal.
- 14:35Speaker 1: With it, right absolutely, Look, folks talking to Ryan Gilbert
- 14:39Speaker 1: from the Broadstreet Hockey dot com broad Street Hockey podcast
- 14:42Speaker 1: as well, Ryan, can you tell everybody where they can
- 14:45Speaker 1: find you out there on the interwebs if they wanted
- 14:46Speaker 1: to follow you, catch your work and things that you're doing.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you can follow me still on Twitter at our
- 14:53Speaker 2: Gilbert Sop, but more so on Blue Sky at Ryan
- 14:57Speaker 2: Gilbert dot Besky dot Social. Yeah, brostrieto read there, listen
- 15:01Speaker 2: to the broad Street Hockey Podcast, and if batting is
- 15:05Speaker 2: your thing, I understand it's not for a lot of people.
- 15:07Speaker 2: But I do host the Hockey Gambling podcast as well.
- 15:09Speaker 1: That's right. How could I forget? Yes? Absolutely, and you
- 15:13Speaker 1: do a great job with that podcast too, folks, real quick.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Our social media sites and where you can follow the
- 15:19Speaker 1: Philadelphia Sports Table, myself and my co host Eric. Yeah,
- 15:23Speaker 1: that's right. Len is not on social he is actually
- 15:27Speaker 1: giving himself a mental health break. Bless his soul here.
- 15:30Speaker 1: But if you are watching on YouTube, here are the
- 15:33Speaker 1: social media sites. We are on Instagram, Twitter, slash x.
- 15:37Speaker 1: You can follow me on TikTok at mister Jeff Warren.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I'm over at Blue Sky as well, so is Eric
- 15:42Speaker 1: at Brick Pollitt. We're also there on threads and you
- 15:46Speaker 1: can like our Facebook page as well. Getting back into
- 15:50Speaker 1: this Flyers you know, upcoming off season here and what
- 15:55Speaker 1: one particular position is going to look like long term,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and you kind of mentioned it a few minutes ago.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Here is the goalie situation and I'm just wondering what
- 16:04Speaker 1: this goalie situation is going to look like long term
- 16:07Speaker 1: for the Flyers. Here, Ryan sam Erson just doesn't seem
- 16:11Speaker 1: to be the guy that is that long term solution
- 16:13Speaker 1: that some of us were just really holding out hope for,
- 16:16Speaker 1: even though in the back of our minds kind of
- 16:18Speaker 1: knew that he wasn't. Ivan Fido tav Alexi Kolosov certainly
- 16:22Speaker 1: didn't meet the moment and the expectations this past season.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Where do you think the goalie situation really goes from here,
- 16:29Speaker 1: whether it's during this offseason, even from a long term perspective,
- 16:33Speaker 1: what are your thoughts here?
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, fortunately, long term does look better. Luckily
- 16:37Speaker 2: they have some decent prospects and Carson Jarnisen and the Ragin.
- 16:41Speaker 2: He's very young, but he had great numbers in the
- 16:43Speaker 2: KHL this season. But for the short term, I think
- 16:46Speaker 2: this offseason they have to go out and add a
- 16:49Speaker 2: veteran Tam mcgoli because Erison, Yeah, we all have high
- 16:52Speaker 2: hopes for him, but I don't think he can be
- 16:54Speaker 2: that fifty game starter. He can't be that clear number one.
- 16:57Speaker 2: You might be able to be the top of a
- 17:00Speaker 2: tandem rather than a one A or a one B.
- 17:02Speaker 2: But I think they need to go out and get somebody.
- 17:06Speaker 2: There's not a lot of great free agents out there.
- 17:08Speaker 2: Jake Allen. He was with the Devils this year. He
- 17:10Speaker 2: did pretty well in a tandem with Jacob Markstrom. Alex
- 17:14Speaker 2: Lyon was with the Red Wings, he was here before.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I'm not sure if he can do enough of a
- 17:19Speaker 2: workload to be there for the other half of Aeron.
- 17:23Speaker 2: But you know, Danzladar, David Ritich. But the one guy
- 17:26Speaker 2: that I am kind of angling for and not everyone
- 17:29Speaker 2: has been a fan of when I bring them up
- 17:31Speaker 2: is trading for John Gibson. There's two years left Armors contract.
- 17:36Speaker 2: It's like a six million dollar deal, so you have
- 17:38Speaker 2: cast space the next two years because you have all
- 17:40Speaker 2: these guys on their rookie deals, on their early deals,
- 17:43Speaker 2: so you know, bring him in. He worked with Lucas
- 17:46Speaker 2: Destol this year in Anaheim. He had a great season.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Maybe he can be the one a They can both
- 17:51Speaker 2: like start around forty games. Both are a bit injury prone.
- 17:55Speaker 2: And then in that case you bring up Aerson, or
- 17:58Speaker 2: bring up Clos offer Off or whoever from the Fantoms.
- 18:01Speaker 2: But you need to put Arson in his ideal role
- 18:05Speaker 2: to let him possibly throw.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a very interesting notion, and you know,
- 18:11Speaker 1: making sure that the goalie situation is going to be
- 18:14Speaker 1: solid over the course of these next two to three years,
- 18:18Speaker 1: or I should say, when we get to that point
- 18:20Speaker 1: within the next two to three years. To make sure
- 18:22Speaker 1: it's solid is so very critical. I mean, we know
- 18:24Speaker 1: that that needs to happen. It's just, you know, I
- 18:27Speaker 1: just go back to it, and I hate thinking about
- 18:29Speaker 1: Carter Heart and what he did to this organization and
- 18:33Speaker 1: what he did to this particular position on this team
- 18:36Speaker 1: that was supposed to be solidified for so many years.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I hate you, buddy, I hate you. I am so
- 18:42Speaker 1: like I think about it and I start to get enraged.
- 18:44Speaker 1: My face starts to get read here, So we should
- 18:46Speaker 1: probably move on to the next topic here. Danny Brier,
- 18:51Speaker 1: in his recent press are talked about how the rebuild
- 18:54Speaker 1: was going to be shifting to adding more talent to
- 18:57Speaker 1: the team. And I know that you recently talked about
- 19:00Speaker 1: on the broad Street Hockey podcast, Ryan, it seems that
- 19:04Speaker 1: the team is gonna build around guys like you mentioned before,
- 19:07Speaker 1: Tyson Forrester or own Tip at Cam York, Noah Kates,
- 19:10Speaker 1: Bobby Brink, Jamie Drysdale, and of course Matt ve Mitchikoff.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Brier said that adding didn't necessarily mean bringing in outside
- 19:19Speaker 1: talent and acquisitions, but the promotion of players within the
- 19:23Speaker 1: farm system. Thought it was interesting for him to note
- 19:26Speaker 1: that and where he wants this farm system to go
- 19:29Speaker 1: in terms of this rebuild. What are your thoughts on
- 19:32Speaker 1: this sentiment and how this may look for the Flyer
- 19:35Speaker 1: season this coming year and even beyond.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think having those internal promotions, internal battles were
- 19:43Speaker 2: going to be important because you come to training camp
- 19:45Speaker 2: every year, there's always a battle, whether it's real or not.
- 19:47Speaker 2: But this coming season, you got a lot of Brierre's
- 19:50Speaker 2: first draft picks turning pro. You got Luchenko, not Luchenko yet,
- 19:53Speaker 2: but he's going to be on the team. You got Bank,
- 19:56Speaker 2: you got Barkie, you have Gribenkin, who they got in
- 19:58Speaker 2: the Lawton trade. You have all these guys that are
- 20:01Speaker 2: coming up and are gonna make the fanoms very exciting.
- 20:04Speaker 2: And that's been something kind of a negative too, is
- 20:06Speaker 2: that like, sure we got to early like Sel, We've
- 20:08Speaker 2: got Rodrigo abol we got Anthony Richard, but none of
- 20:11Speaker 2: them are really like players that are gonna win a job.
- 20:13Speaker 2: They're there because they have to be there because of injury.
- 20:16Speaker 1: So it's kind of been a boring season for the
- 20:18Speaker 1: Phantoms over the past few seasons. It's kind of been like, honestly,
- 20:24Speaker 1: I haven't been to as many games.
- 20:26Speaker 2: No, because they're all all the way out of the alettender.
- 20:28Speaker 2: But yeah, they're in the playoffs now. They finally have
- 20:30Speaker 2: those young guys now Luchenko joined them, Grimbenkan's there, bump,
- 20:35Speaker 2: look bump, looking good as too good as well. So
- 20:38Speaker 2: you have these guys that are going to be pushing
- 20:40Speaker 2: in camp. Might not win a job, but if they're
- 20:43Speaker 2: getting hot in the AHO and the Flyers need a spark,
- 20:46Speaker 2: you know, maybe those those fourth liners won't be us comfortable.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, all right, Well, moving along with the discussion here,
- 20:53Speaker 1: Danny Brierre is going to be looking at bringing in
- 20:55Speaker 1: some talent and free agency as well. We know this,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you know whether it is is a veteran goalie in
- 21:02Speaker 1: the NHL. You know whether there are gonna be some
- 21:04Speaker 1: defenseman possibly brought in, maybe some wingers as well. I'm
- 21:08Speaker 1: wondering when you're looking at free agency and what maybe
- 21:12Speaker 1: coming down the pike, rind, you know what names intrigue
- 21:14Speaker 1: you and do you think there could be some realistic,
- 21:18Speaker 1: bigger type of names that end up coming to Philadelphia
- 21:21Speaker 1: when free agency starts.
- 21:23Speaker 2: It is possible because the Flyers do have this reputation
- 21:26Speaker 2: now of taking care of their players, doing right by
- 21:29Speaker 2: their players, like the Eric Johnson trade. They didn't have
- 21:31Speaker 2: to trade him, but now he has a chance on
- 21:33Speaker 2: the cup again with the team that drafted him first overall.
- 21:36Speaker 2: So you could see maybe, especially with the salary cap
- 21:40Speaker 2: going up, these bigger names, the Flyers could give them
- 21:43Speaker 2: like ten million dollars, like two years, like a Like
- 21:46Speaker 2: they're not gonna get John Tavares, but someone like that Johnsavars,
- 21:50Speaker 2: Sam Bennett's out there. They probably not Brock Nelson another
- 21:54Speaker 2: center because you're looking at center or you're looking at goalie,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and goalie's not going to be a big name. There's
- 21:59Speaker 2: no big names out there in free agency, so it
- 22:02Speaker 2: would be a center. And I don't necessarily want to
- 22:05Speaker 2: bring him back in this leadership room, but Claude Deru
- 22:09Speaker 2: would hit this team so well. Yes, have him quarterback
- 22:12Speaker 2: to have from quarterback to power play. He can play center,
- 22:15Speaker 2: he can play wing, he can take face offs. But
- 22:18Speaker 2: I don't know if they want to bring him in
- 22:19Speaker 2: when they have this this young core growing. So maybe
- 22:23Speaker 2: like Michael Granlund from he's on the Stars right now,
- 22:27Speaker 2: but he may want to go win somewhere. I think
- 22:29Speaker 2: the big name is we've heard it with offer sheets
- 22:32Speaker 2: and restricted free agencies. Marko Rossi, the center in Minnesota. Yeah,
- 22:36Speaker 2: he had sixty points this year. He's playing third, fourth
- 22:39Speaker 2: line in the playoffs for Minnesota. So either a trade
- 22:42Speaker 2: or an offer sheet for him, I think is the
- 22:44Speaker 2: top target for me.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I take him. I'd absolutely take him at this point.
- 22:48Speaker 1: So as we're moving along, the Flyers are currently sitting
- 22:52Speaker 1: at number four overall in the NHL draft. Think they
- 22:54Speaker 1: have a nine point five per chance of landing the
- 22:57Speaker 1: number one pick in the draft lottery. This draft is
- 23:00Speaker 1: so important to this team, this organization, and US fans
- 23:05Speaker 1: as well, just because they have three first rounders here.
- 23:09Speaker 1: In terms of this upcoming draft and their strategy here Ryan,
- 23:14Speaker 1: of course, we'd all like to see the Flyers end
- 23:17Speaker 1: up with a prospect, perhaps like Matthew Schaeffer. You know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: I doubting that that's going to happen. But if they
- 23:24Speaker 1: don't end up with him, do you see Danny Brier
- 23:27Speaker 1: in company? How do you see him handling their first
- 23:30Speaker 1: pick of the draft here?
- 23:32Speaker 2: Yeah, this is Brier's third draft. Now, the first year,
- 23:35Speaker 2: you know, mitchkov kind of fell into their lap at seven,
- 23:38Speaker 2: and then last year we saw, you know, there were
- 23:40Speaker 2: rumors after the fact that they were looking to move up.
- 23:42Speaker 2: We obviously saw them trade back. So I think that's
- 23:45Speaker 2: the one big thing with Brier, and he mentioned it
- 23:47Speaker 2: in his presser last week, is he's looking for value.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Like you said, they have those three first round picks,
- 23:52Speaker 2: they have four picks in the first half of the
- 23:55Speaker 2: second round, like they have seven top forty eight picks,
- 23:58Speaker 2: and they're not necessarily going to use all of them.
- 24:00Speaker 2: So I could very well see them, you know, trading
- 24:03Speaker 2: up if they do see one of those targets that
- 24:05Speaker 2: they really want, like a Schaefer, like a Michael Misa,
- 24:08Speaker 2: or maybe if James Hagen's or Anton frontell falls down,
- 24:12Speaker 2: they could trade back. And I think a lot of
- 24:15Speaker 2: fans will be like, all right, we have to go
- 24:16Speaker 2: out and get our center. But I wouldn't be shocked
- 24:19Speaker 2: if they think a winger like Porter Martone or Roger
- 24:22Speaker 2: McQueen is the best guy out there, and they'll be like,
- 24:24Speaker 2: all right, let's get the best player available. Yeah, and
- 24:27Speaker 2: let's get the let's not pass that up and we
- 24:30Speaker 2: can go get a center elsewhere. So I feel like
- 24:33Speaker 2: it's a very important draft for Brierre. But this is
- 24:36Speaker 2: going to be the highest pick they get. I don't
- 24:38Speaker 2: think they're going to be this bad again. So they
- 24:40Speaker 2: have to make sure they hit on this one.
- 24:42Speaker 1: When you look at this, I mean I didn't expect
- 24:44Speaker 1: to ask you this, but when you when you do
- 24:46Speaker 1: look at this, of course we know that the center
- 24:49Speaker 1: is needed. You know, I mentioned in free agency maybe
- 24:51Speaker 1: they would look at a winger. Perhaps. I don't think
- 24:55Speaker 1: we can take the winger mentality and kind of shluff
- 24:58Speaker 1: that off to the side, because with this team and
- 25:01Speaker 1: the inconsistencies that we've seen here and there from the
- 25:04Speaker 1: Wings every now and again. I mean, if you're able
- 25:06Speaker 1: to develop somebody a top end talent, the value that
- 25:10Speaker 1: you're talking about, I don't think that's a bad thing
- 25:13Speaker 1: when it comes to hockey. When it comes to this
- 25:15Speaker 1: Flyers team an organization in the midst of this rebuild here,
- 25:18Speaker 1: if it ends up being a winger, I don't see
- 25:20Speaker 1: an issue with that at all. I would you agree
- 25:23Speaker 1: with that?
- 25:24Speaker 2: I agree because I don't think they have too many
- 25:26Speaker 2: wingers that have top six potentially exactique. He'll be a
- 25:30Speaker 2: top six winner for a while. Mitchkoff gonna be a
- 25:32Speaker 2: first line winger his whole career. Forster's looking top six,
- 25:36Speaker 2: but Tippet probably more middle six. I don't know if
- 25:39Speaker 2: he's proven that. Yeah, then you know you got a
- 25:41Speaker 2: bunch of guys. You got Brink, you got Pelotier, you
- 25:44Speaker 2: got Halfaway's a fourth line, or you got all these
- 25:46Speaker 2: young guys. You don't have like that top top winger
- 25:50Speaker 2: besides mitchkov or like you can't. He's hopefully going to
- 25:53Speaker 2: be great, but he'll need someone to play with on
- 25:56Speaker 2: the other side and in the middle. And everyone's like, oh,
- 25:59Speaker 2: we need a one see, we need a one CE. Sure,
- 26:01Speaker 2: but if you have two legit top line wingers on
- 26:04Speaker 2: that line and you have a you know, a decent
- 26:07Speaker 2: decent two c as that one say, you can kind
- 26:10Speaker 2: of get by. So I don't think they should pass up,
- 26:12Speaker 2: you know, getting a winger. I could see fans being
- 26:15Speaker 2: up in arms about it, but just get the best
- 26:17Speaker 2: player available. If players are dropping and you want to
- 26:20Speaker 2: trade back, sure if someone if if you're at four
- 26:24Speaker 2: and you want Mesa to go up and get up,
- 26:26Speaker 2: like right, just I trust this front office right now
- 26:29Speaker 2: to do what they think is best with these draft picks,
- 26:32Speaker 2: because we didn't like the Jet Luchenko pick, right, and
- 26:35Speaker 2: then two months later we're like, oh, this is great exactly.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You mentioned a keyword trust with regard to this front office.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm still trusting this front office. I'm still trusting Danny Breer. Look,
- 26:48Speaker 1: not every single move seems to have quote made sense,
- 26:53Speaker 1: but I think there has been a strategic plan in
- 26:55Speaker 1: place that we did not have prior to him taking
- 26:58Speaker 1: the helm in terms of running this team and being
- 27:01Speaker 1: the general manager. I am trusting Danny Brierre and I
- 27:04Speaker 1: think that the majority of Flyers fans should be in
- 27:08Speaker 1: that camp as well.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a clear plan. You may not agree with
- 27:12Speaker 2: the plan, you may want them to bottom out, but
- 27:14Speaker 2: they have the plan of building the culture and then
- 27:16Speaker 2: getting the talent to fit the culture. Absolutely. Yeah, you,
- 27:20Speaker 2: I and fans try to put the issues of Chuck
- 27:23Speaker 2: Fletcher and Ron Hextall and all these past gms on
- 27:27Speaker 2: Ombrier because it's the same organization, and you get it's
- 27:30Speaker 2: all Flyers have been the same team past twenty years.
- 27:33Speaker 2: They can't they can't get anything. It's always two or
- 27:35Speaker 2: three years away from being two or three years away.
- 27:37Speaker 2: But this is a new front office. They came in,
- 27:41Speaker 2: they said, we have to rebuild, we have to change things,
- 27:44Speaker 2: and they've done that so far. So I feel like
- 27:47Speaker 2: and I don't think they've lost any move they've made.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I think that they've either won or at least, you know,
- 27:52Speaker 2: came out win win with their with their trade partners.
- 27:55Speaker 2: So trust, I think is a big thing, and it's
- 27:58Speaker 2: all you can do. You can trust or you can
- 28:00Speaker 2: just complain all the time, which you know, that's fun exactly.
- 28:05Speaker 2: If we're gonna be positive, you have to have some trust.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's fun to complain when they're on
- 28:09Speaker 1: losing streaks in the middle of the season, of course. However,
- 28:12Speaker 1: all right, well Brian, before I let you go, buddy,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and I know it's a I know it's a general
- 28:17Speaker 1: question here, but is there any talent in this upcoming
- 28:21Speaker 1: NHL draft that you like, outside of outside of the
- 28:24Speaker 1: first round that you think would be able to help
- 28:27Speaker 1: this Flyers team in terms of the rebuild in the
- 28:30Speaker 1: years that come. Is there anybody sticking out to you?
- 28:33Speaker 2: So I'm not sure if this guy is gonna fall
- 28:35Speaker 2: out of the first round. But he's falling down the
- 28:37Speaker 2: draft boards a lot. It's a Russian center Ivan rye Ckinn.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Yeah, he's had, you know a lot of attitude issues.
- 28:44Speaker 2: He hasn't been you know, in the KHL. He's over
- 28:47Speaker 2: in the us h L now. But if the Flyers
- 28:51Speaker 2: talk to him and they're like, all right, we think
- 28:53Speaker 2: this guy can come play with Mitchkoff, it goes back
- 28:55Speaker 2: to what we're just talking about, and it's the trust.
- 28:57Speaker 2: It's okay. If the Flyers talk to this guy and
- 29:00Speaker 2: he can buy in, and you can get him with
- 29:03Speaker 2: one year later first round picks or an early second
- 29:06Speaker 2: round pick, go do it. Yep, you have, you have
- 29:08Speaker 2: seven picks. You can use one of those to take
- 29:11Speaker 2: a big swing on a guy that could end up
- 29:13Speaker 2: being you know, a top ten talent from this draft.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, folks, and we're gonna let him go.
- 29:19Speaker 1: It was great, great talking Flyers with Ryan Gilbert from
- 29:23Speaker 1: Broadstreet Hockey dot Com, the broad Street Hockey podcast. Again,
- 29:28Speaker 1: tell everybody where they can find you out on the
- 29:30Speaker 1: socials and the other podcasts that you're doing as well, Ryan.
