- 1:33life to change.
- 1:34Series five, show 33, that's what this week
- 1:37is, and the granular topic is take back
- 1:39control of your direction.
- 1:41Series five, show 33, episode number three.
- 1:45Great to be with everyone here.
- 1:47So this is Monday, it is August 10,
- 1:512026, and welcome everyone once again to Inspirations
- 1:55for Your Life.
- 1:56I am John C.
- 1:58Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:05podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 2:09Montclair State University, passionate lifelong learner, and now
- 2:14so grateful to be a published author.
- 2:17That's right.
- 2:18All right, guys, have you ever reached the
- 2:20end of an incredibly busy day and realized
- 2:24that almost everything you did was determined by
- 2:27somebody or something else?
- 2:30Messages, meetings, requests, notifications, problems, obligations, and
- 2:36interruptions can easily take control of your direction
- 2:41without us even noticing it.
- 2:43So today, I'm changing that.
- 2:46Taking back control doesn't mean controlling everything around
- 2:50you.
- 2:50It means becoming intentional about your choices, attention,
- 2:55time, environment, and the energy.
- 2:59Let's get into our 30 points for today,
- 3:02okay?
- 3:03Number one, stop living by default.
- 3:05Don't live on autopilot with everything you do.
- 3:08If you never consciously choose your direction, circumstances
- 3:11will choose it for you.
- 3:13Pay attention to where your daily patterns are
- 3:17actually taking you.
- 3:19Number two, decide where you're going.
- 3:24Direction requires a destination.
- 3:26Get clear about what you're trying to build
- 3:29and what you want the next chapter of
- 3:31your life to represent.
- 3:33And I think that's important.
- 3:35I think a lot of people miss that
- 3:37because they're not intentional.
- 3:39They don't mean to not be intentional, but
- 3:41it just happens because they get into the
- 3:43bustle and hustle of life.
- 3:45Number three, take ownership of your choices.
- 3:49You can't control everything that happens, but you
- 3:55can take responsibility for many of the decisions
- 3:58you make in response.
- 4:00And that's going to have a pretty big
- 4:04outlook to what you're doing and the people
- 4:06you interact with.
- 4:08And I think that'll make some difference.
- 4:09Number four, guys, audit what's controlling your attention.
- 4:14Look at where your attention actually goes.
- 4:17Your phone, email, social media, interruptions, and other
- 4:21people's priorities may be consuming more of it
- 4:25than you realize.
- 4:27I think it's important that we stop and
- 4:30we wake up to this today, not tomorrow,
- 4:33not next week, not next month, not next
- 4:35year.
- 4:36We have to be aware of things now.
- 4:41That's a very important thing to basically be
- 4:46aware of.
- 4:48And that's important to know, guys, really, really
- 4:53important.
- 4:54Number five, question routines you inherited.
- 5:00Just because you've always done something a certain
- 5:04way doesn't mean you need to continue.
- 5:07Ask whether your routines still support who you're
- 5:11becoming.
- 5:12Number six, stop surrendering your schedule.
- 5:16No need to do that.
- 5:17Your calendar shouldn't be entirely open to other
- 5:21people.
- 5:22If you use calendaring systems, you can select
- 5:25what's available and what's not.
- 5:26Make sure your own priorities have a legitimate
- 5:29place on it first.
- 5:31A lot of people I know, this happened
- 5:33a lot during COVID time, they opened their
- 5:35calendar and then suddenly they're like, oh my
- 5:37gosh, what happened to my day?
- 5:38What happened to my whole week?
- 5:40You just gave it up.
- 5:44And that's important to know.
- 5:51That's a crazy thing, but I think it's
- 5:54really important that we're aware of it, okay?
- 5:58Number seven, guys, define what deserves your energy
- 6:02right now.
- 6:03Everything can't receive your maximum effort, no.
- 6:09Determine what genuinely deserves your best energy and
- 6:13what doesn't, okay?
- 6:16Number eight, remove unnecessary obligations.
- 6:20Some commitments remain in our lives simply because
- 6:24we've never reconsidered them.
- 6:28Removing what no longer matters creates a space
- 6:31for what does.
- 6:34But I know so many people that don't
- 6:35bother to think about, you know, cleaning out
- 6:38or deciding to get rid of things, all
- 6:40right?
- 6:40That's important for us to be aware of
- 6:46that.
- 6:46So number nine, guys, choose your direction.
- 6:50But most importantly, guys, choose it deliberately, all
- 6:53right?
- 6:54Choose it deliberately.
- 6:55When you choose it deliberately, you are acting
- 6:58with intention, all right?
- 7:00Don't drift toward whatever happens next.
- 7:04Some people I know are like, well, I'll
- 7:05just float.
- 7:06Whatever happens, happens.
- 7:07Don't do that.
- 7:09Make conscious choices about where you're going and
- 7:14why you're going there.
- 7:16Number 10, stop letting urgency control you.
- 7:20Urgent and important aren't always the same thing.
- 7:24Don't allow the loudest demand to automatically become
- 7:29your highest priority.
- 7:32Number 11, reclaim your mornings.
- 7:36When possible, don't give the first part of
- 7:39your day immediately to notifications and other people's
- 7:43agendas.
- 7:45Create some space for yourself.
- 7:48I think when we do that, we start
- 7:51to realize that we're important.
- 7:54You know, we deserve to have time in
- 7:55our life.
- 7:57You know, you have time for everybody else,
- 7:58but we should have time to do the
- 7:59things we want to do, whether that's resting,
- 8:02meditating, whether it's exercising, whatever it is, or
- 8:05doing something else fun, we should have that
- 8:07time.
- 8:08Number 12, control what enters your mind.
- 8:12What you repeatedly consume influences how you think.
- 8:16Be selective about the information, opinions, and distractions
- 8:19you allow into your attention.
- 8:22Now, if it happens once or twice, no
- 8:24big deal, right?
- 8:25No biggie.
- 8:26But if it keeps happening, that's a big
- 8:33problem to understand, all right?
- 8:37So be aware of those kinds of things.
- 8:39Because you see, guys, you have more power
- 8:41than you think, but the problem is you
- 8:44think about something, and then you complain you're
- 8:48on this path, but you're the one thinking
- 8:50about it.
- 8:52And you're saying you have no power.
- 8:54You do.
- 8:55You keep thinking about the same thing over
- 8:57and over again, and then wondering why you
- 8:59can't change it.
- 9:03That's sad.
- 9:04But you have the power to change it,
- 9:06guys.
- 9:07Number 13, set boundaries around your attention.
- 9:12People I know don't want to do this
- 9:14because they feel that if they set boundaries,
- 9:17people won't like them.
- 9:18No.
- 9:20You know, you have to realize when you're
- 9:24having a negotiation, for example, in your business,
- 9:27I say to people, it's not personal.
- 9:29It's just business.
- 9:31If it's a relationship, you still can have
- 9:34boundaries.
- 9:35Boundaries are good because they keep us protected.
- 9:41So set boundaries around your attention.
- 9:44That's 13.
- 9:45You don't need to respond immediately to everything
- 9:47that arrives.
- 9:50Decide what deserves access to you and when.
- 9:55There's no need to just jump like everything's
- 9:57a fire drill.
- 9:58I think that becomes a big problem for
- 10:00people.
- 10:00Oh, you know, I'm just going to do
- 10:02this because somebody responded.
- 10:03It's kind of like the phone ring.
- 10:05I remember many years ago when, bless my
- 10:09grandfather, he died.
- 10:10I think I told you when I was
- 10:11probably only in third grade of Thanksgiving night.
- 10:18And without getting all the details there.
- 10:19But anyway, he said something very important to
- 10:24me.
- 10:27And this is something you're probably going to
- 10:29say to me, John, this doesn't make sense.
- 10:30But I'm here to tell you, it makes
- 10:32a lot of sense.
- 10:34I'm going to tell you why it makes
- 10:35sense in a minute.
- 10:36The reason this makes sense is, again, you
- 10:39have more power than you think.
- 10:43You have more power than you think.
- 10:45And if you understand that you have more
- 10:46power than you think, the world is your
- 10:50oyster.
- 10:51The world is your oyster.
- 10:53I think that's a very important thing for
- 10:56us to understand.
- 10:58You know, we definitely can understand that.
- 11:03What I said about set boundaries around your
- 11:05attention.
- 11:06So my grandfather, I would be either at
- 11:10my grandparents' house.
- 11:11This is my dad's side.
- 11:13Or they were at our house.
- 11:15And the phone would ring.
- 11:16And I would jump up like a jackrabbit
- 11:20to go answer it.
- 11:22Because I had to get it before the
- 11:25first ring ended.
- 11:26I had to get it before it rang
- 11:28the second time.
- 11:29Why?
- 11:29I have no idea.
- 11:31Now you have to let the phone ring
- 11:33at least once so the caller ID will
- 11:34kick in.
- 11:35And some systems even delay the ring so
- 11:37by the time you get it, it's actually
- 11:38the second ring.
- 11:39My grandfather said to me, you know, you
- 11:43don't need to kill yourself trying to answer
- 11:45the phone.
- 11:46If you don't make it by the first
- 11:48ring, the second, the third, and if they
- 11:50don't wait till that, then they'll call back.
- 11:54Don't worry about it.
- 11:56And when he said that to me, I
- 11:58was like, well, grandpa, what if I was
- 11:59going, well, then you'll call back.
- 12:01You call people and they don't answer.
- 12:03And you hang up and you call back
- 12:05later.
- 12:06They'll do the same thing.
- 12:09So what he meant was basically really important,
- 12:13and I think this is something a lot
- 12:14of people miss, is to set boundaries around
- 12:18your attention.
- 12:19The phone rang.
- 12:19It didn't mean I had to jump up
- 12:21like a jack-in-the-box or a
- 12:23jack-rabbit to go get it, right?
- 12:26Or, you know, somebody sends an email, oh
- 12:28my gosh, you gotta respond immediately.
- 12:29You know, this is very typical when it
- 12:31comes to, a lot of times, people are
- 12:34dealing with an attorney and maybe they're not
- 12:36that, let's say, versed in it.
- 12:40And so, you know, it's like a game,
- 12:42right?
- 12:43You email them.
- 12:44If you email them back immediately and you're
- 12:47negotiating, you just lost your negotiation power, all
- 12:51right?
- 12:52You gotta let things sit a little bit.
- 12:55You let a day, you kind of chill,
- 12:57you schedule.
- 12:58You don't send it right back, okay?
- 13:01Because when you do that, you change the
- 13:03whole trajectory.
- 13:05Now they know you're desperate.
- 13:09And that's a big problem, right?
- 13:11A very big problem.
- 13:13Number 14, guys, stop outsourcing important decisions.
- 13:17Advice is useful, but your life cannot become
- 13:21a committee vote.
- 13:23Gather perspectives, then use your own judgment.
- 13:27Don't go to a board for a decision
- 13:29for everything you need.
- 13:31Number 15, design your environment intentionally.
- 13:35Your surroundings influence your behavior.
- 13:39Make productive choices easier and unnecessary distractions harder
- 13:45to reach you.
- 13:46When you do this, it's like your life
- 13:50gets into a different pattern.
- 13:52And it's pretty amazing how and why this
- 13:56happens.
- 13:57But it happens because, you know, if we
- 14:00can get rid of a distraction in our
- 14:01life, right?
- 14:03Now we can focus on something else.
- 14:05There's room for other good things, right?
- 14:07Number 16, recognize what drains your attention.
- 14:11Some activities consume more than time.
- 14:17They drain the energy you need for important
- 14:20work.
- 14:21Identify those patterns before they control your day.
- 14:25I think that's the most important thing is
- 14:27being aware of things around you.
- 14:30Number 17, make your calendar reflect your priorities.
- 14:35I always tell people this and they laugh.
- 14:37It's like, guys, if you're not on my
- 14:39calendar, it's not happening.
- 14:41Whether it's social, whether it's business, if you're
- 14:42not on the calendar, it's not happening.
- 14:45Here's my calendar link.
- 14:47And they laugh and I'm like, you're not
- 14:48on my calendar.
- 14:52And if I have things I wanna do
- 14:53personally or business, I put them on my
- 14:55calendar.
- 14:56And then nobody else gets into that.
- 14:58I use an automated scheduling system, right?
- 15:00So make your calendar reflect your priorities first.
- 15:03If something truly matters, eventually it needs time
- 15:07allocated to it.
- 15:08Whether it's a celebration, whether it's to relax
- 15:12or whatever it is, your priorities shouldn't exist
- 15:16only as good intentions.
- 15:18You need to schedule them.
- 15:20When you schedule them, your mind and body
- 15:22take you seriously.
- 15:23Okay, he's scheduling this, she's scheduling it.
- 15:26We're gonna make sure this happens, okay?
- 15:30Number 18, eliminate automatic yeses.
- 15:34I used to be guilty of this.
- 15:35You don't have to immediately accept every invitation.
- 15:39Project favorite requests.
- 15:41Give yourself permission to consider what you're committing
- 15:44to.
- 15:46Don't worry about people thinking you're not nice.
- 15:52If you're always nice like that, you're gonna
- 15:55deplete yourself of the time you deserve for
- 16:01yourself.
- 16:03Number 19, guys, choose what gets access to
- 16:07you.
- 16:09Access to your time and attention has value.
- 16:13Treat it accordingly, okay?
- 16:14Instead of allowing everything, equal access.
- 16:18That's important.
- 16:20And I think when we understand that caveat,
- 16:24we start to realize that our life can
- 16:29take different paths.
- 16:32Okay?
- 16:33And that all happens from our intentional choices.
- 16:37Other people always try, I got some more
- 16:39armchairs here.
- 16:41Other people always try to get you to
- 16:43go their way.
- 16:45And their way may not always be for
- 16:49the greater good of all concerned.
- 16:51Might be good for them, but it might
- 16:53not be so good for you.
- 16:55So don't be so quick to jump up
- 16:56like a jack-in-the-box.
- 16:59Number 20, stop reacting to everything.
- 17:02Not every message needs an immediate reply.
- 17:05Not every comment requires a response.
- 17:09Constant reaction prevents deliberate action.
- 17:13Think about that for a moment, right?
- 17:16Not every social media, not every post, not
- 17:19every message you get, even if it's a
- 17:20text, does it require a response?
- 17:23Sometimes, you know, people like, they just become
- 17:24compulsive.
- 17:25Oh my gosh, I've gotta like give it
- 17:28a check mark or a heart or something.
- 17:30People do that in relationships, it's just like,
- 17:31oh my gosh.
- 17:32It's just like, they become so co-dependent.
- 17:34Oh my gosh, did you text, did you
- 17:36text?
- 17:36What'd you say?
- 17:37Did you like the message, did you like
- 17:38the message?
- 17:39Like, chill, okay?
- 17:41Chill.
- 17:43Number 21, build space for important thinking.
- 17:48Some of your best decisions require quiet time.
- 17:55Create uninterrupted periods where you can think, evaluate,
- 18:00plan, and create.
- 18:05A lot of people I know don't wanna
- 18:06do that.
- 18:06They're like, well, if I do that, then
- 18:08what's gonna happen?
- 18:09You're gonna start to become intentional and you're
- 18:12still gonna start to have time and you're
- 18:14gonna start having a better life.
- 18:17Number 22, protect your best hours.
- 18:20Identify when you're mentally strongest and protect that
- 18:23time for work that genuinely benefits from your
- 18:28best thinking.
- 18:29Nothing wrong with that, that's being strategic.
- 18:33If you're a morning riser, then make sure
- 18:35your high priorities are done in the morning.
- 18:37If you're a late night owl, then make
- 18:39sure that your high priorities get done before
- 18:41you go to sleep.
- 18:43Number 23, guys, become the driver again.
- 18:48You may not control the road traffic or
- 18:51unexpected detours or the lights, but you can
- 18:55still choose your destination and adjust your route.
- 18:58If there's traffic on a route or if
- 19:00there's an accident, you can get off at
- 19:03the next exit.
- 19:05You could do that.
- 19:08Number 24, decide what no longer fits.
- 19:14Something may have been right for an earlier
- 19:18chapter and wrong for this one.
- 19:21Give yourself permission to recognize when it's time
- 19:25to move beyond it, beyond it.
- 19:29A lot of people don't wanna give up.
- 19:32They feel if they give up or they
- 19:34change direction that they're quitting.
- 19:36They're not quitting, they're changing the course of
- 19:39direction.
- 19:40And it's okay to do that for the
- 19:42greater good of all concerned.
- 19:43I'm telling you, don't say yes to everything.
- 19:48I'm not saying to quit.
- 19:49I'm not saying to stop.
- 19:51I'm saying, stop saying yes to everybody.
- 19:55Stop being a martyr.
- 19:57Stop saying, oh, I've gotta do this for
- 19:59them.
- 19:59Or they're not gonna like me.
- 20:01Who cares if they don't like you?
- 20:03Anybody that's gonna abuse you so much is
- 20:05not somebody you wanna be around.
- 20:07Number 25, remove distractions without guilt.
- 20:10Reducing distractions isn't selfish.
- 20:12It's how you protect your ability and your
- 20:14energy to give meaningful attention to what genuinely
- 20:17matters in your life.
- 20:18And guess what?
- 20:20More good things will show up in your
- 20:22life when you do that.
- 20:23Number 26, create room for better choices.
- 20:27Removing something unnecessary isn't merely subtraction, guys.
- 20:32It creates space for opportunities.
- 20:34It creates a void.
- 20:35Whether it's relationships, thinking, experiences that matter more,
- 20:40we create that void.
- 20:42It's like things show up in our life
- 20:45that we weren't expecting or we get these
- 20:48little mini epiphany moments.
- 20:49And I think those are pretty cool.
- 20:52If we could understand how a perspective shift
- 20:58or switch can change how we feel about
- 21:02something, right?
- 21:06That's important to know.
- 21:10Number 27, direct your energy, okay?
- 21:15Instead of scattering it, focus energy creates progress.
- 21:21Scattered energy creates exhaustion.
- 21:25Decide now where your effort can produce the
- 21:28greatest meaningful result for you.
- 21:31Number 28, own where you're headed.
- 21:35John, what do you mean by that?
- 21:37Great question.
- 21:38Your direction belongs to you.
- 21:41Advice, circumstances and responsibilities may influence it, but
- 21:46ultimately you need to own the path you're
- 21:49choosing.
- 21:51People are afraid to do that, but that's
- 21:53a big key to success in life.
- 21:55Number 29, your direction determines your destination.
- 21:59Small daily choices create trajectories.
- 22:03Keep moving in one direction long enough and
- 22:07eventually you're going to arrive somewhere.
- 22:11Number 30, take the wheel back.
- 22:14This brings everything together in full circle.
- 22:17Stop allowing urgency, distraction, habit and other people's
- 22:22expectations to drive your life.
- 22:27Your life is your life.
- 22:30If you wanna help them sometime and you
- 22:31wanna listen to them, that's fine, but don't
- 22:33let that become a constant 24 seven.
- 22:38You'll burn out.
- 22:39Become intentional about where you're going, what you're
- 22:42doing and who you're doing it with.
- 22:45As I'm getting ready to close out this
- 22:47show today, taking back control of your direction
- 22:50doesn't mean controlling every circumstance.
- 22:54A lot of people have a social discomfort
- 22:57of like, oh, I don't know if I
- 22:59wanna do that.
- 23:00I don't know how I'm gonna feel, how
- 23:01they're gonna feel.
- 23:02See, that's impossible, guys.
- 23:05It means becoming more deliberate about what is
- 23:10yours to control.
- 23:12Your attention, your energy, your priorities, your boundaries,
- 23:19your schedule, your choices.
- 23:24You don't need to change everything overnight.
- 23:28Start by looking at where your time and
- 23:31attention are going right now.
- 23:34Ask yourself whether those patterns are moving you
- 23:38closer to the person or the life that
- 23:41you're trying to build or pushing you further
- 23:43away.
- 23:44If they're not, change the direction.
- 23:47It's simple.
- 23:49It's not personal.
- 23:50Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John Seymour, a serial
- 23:52entrepreneur, and I thank you so much for
- 23:54choosing to join me today for another amazing
- 23:57episode of Inspirations for Your Life.
- 23:59Remember, ladies and gentlemen, this is important, being
- 24:03busy doesn't mean you're moving forward.
- 24:07I know a lot of us, oh, John,
- 24:09I'm so busy.
- 24:10And they have this OCD of saying, I
- 24:14gotta stay busy, but the busy they're doing
- 24:17is not producing any results.
- 24:21Oh, I'm so busy, what are you doing?
- 24:23Oh, I'm doing things, I'm making money, I'm
- 24:24so busy, but they're not.
- 24:28And they get eluded by this delusion.
- 24:31Know where you're going, right?
- 24:33That's important.
- 24:34If you don't know where you're going, how
- 24:36are you ever gonna get there?
- 24:37If I say, get in the car and
- 24:38let's go somewhere, where are we going?
- 24:39I don't know, we're just gonna go somewhere.
- 24:42Very few people get in the car anymore
- 24:44and just say, let's just take a drive.
- 24:45It's nice to take a drive.
- 24:46People say, well, I wanna know where I'm
- 24:47going, gas costs X, I wanna know what
- 24:49I'm doing.
- 24:50I wanna at least know I'm going to
- 24:51the country, or I wanna at least know
- 24:53I'm going to Allentown, Pennsylvania.
- 24:54I wanna at least know that.
- 24:56The rest we can figure on the way,
- 24:58right?
- 25:00The rest we can decide on the way.
- 25:03And I think if we have a little
- 25:05bit of direction, then the rest of it
- 25:07can be, let's say, creative, can be inspiration.
- 25:14But if we suddenly want to, I don't
- 25:16know, let's say, take a hobby up, and
- 25:21we wanna learn woodcraft.
- 25:26But if we don't at least get in
- 25:27the hobby of woodcraft, how are we ever
- 25:29gonna do it?
- 25:30If we wanna do pottery, I think they
- 25:33call it throwing, how are we ever gonna
- 25:35be able to make a pot if we
- 25:37don't even get in to try it, right?
- 25:41I want you ladies and gentlemen to protect
- 25:43what matters, and I know that's hard for
- 25:45a lot of people.
- 25:46Own your choices, even when it's hard around
- 25:48others.
- 25:49Your direction determines your destination, right?
- 25:53What you pop in your GPS is where
- 25:55you're going to.
- 25:56And you do that each and every day
- 25:59by the small choices and actions you take.
- 26:04Don't like where you are right now?
- 26:07Change the daily actions and thoughts you have.
- 26:10You can do it.
- 26:12I'm not gonna tell you it's gonna be
- 26:14easy, because if I did that, that would
- 26:15be lying.
- 26:16And I said that growth happens when you're
- 26:19uncomfortable.
- 26:20It never happens when you're comfortable, right?
- 26:24We've gotta push the envelope just a little
- 26:27bit further so you can get to the
- 26:30destination that you've wanted so very bad.
- 26:35People get all upset, they get excited, because
- 26:38things aren't going the way they want.
- 26:40So they get fearful, they decide to hold
- 26:44back.
- 26:47And then they're like, we're at the same
- 26:51spot again.
- 26:52Yeah, we are.
- 26:55Sometimes it's fear, false evidence appearing real to
- 26:58hold you there.
- 26:59Sometimes it's another person, whether it's a relationship,
- 27:02friend, what have you.
- 27:04Maybe it's a coworker.
- 27:07And even though we're on the same project,
- 27:12it might be something different we need to
- 27:13do to get there.
- 27:15They may need to do one thing.
- 27:17Maybe you're studying with a partner and that
- 27:20partner does some things, but you don't learn
- 27:21that way.
- 27:23Nothing wrong with telling them.
- 27:25Nothing wrong with saying, hey, can we study
- 27:27this way too?
- 27:28It would help me take back your power.
- 27:35Because if you don't, you're gonna burn out.
- 27:39You're gonna get frustrated with life.
- 27:43And that's a truth.
- 27:45But you can make the choice today to
- 27:47change, all right?
- 27:49Take the wheel back in your life right
- 27:52now.
- 27:53Again, I'm John C.
