- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. It's time now
- 0:02Speaker 1: for our player interviews, and we're going to talk to
- 0:05Speaker 1: two of the what I like to refer to them
- 0:07Speaker 1: as foot soldiers and old Chuck Cayton theme when he
- 0:10Speaker 1: was doing radio for the Whalers, Guys like Dave Tippett,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Dean Evison, Stewie Gavin, guys like that. And it's a
- 0:16Speaker 1: Connecticut guy Jake Percival, senior Ford for the Huskies joining
- 0:20Speaker 1: us here. Would picked up two assists on Friday night
- 0:22Speaker 1: in the win over Ohio State. I guess my first
- 0:25Speaker 1: question is can you believe you're a senior? This goes fast,
- 0:28Speaker 1: doesn't it.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah? This is probably the fastest like time's moved in
- 0:32Speaker 2: my life. You blink in your four years go by
- 0:36Speaker 2: really quick.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And it's amazing how fast you grow up too, isn't it?
- 0:40Speaker 2: No, Yeah, it is. It's pretty crazy, especially with like
- 0:43Speaker 2: seeing how the freshman on my team, how young they are.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It's very weird. But now I'm just trying to enjoy it,
- 0:49Speaker 2: be present and yeah, enjoy enjoy this last year.
- 0:54Speaker 1: All right, let's walk through the two goals that you
- 0:56Speaker 1: assisted on Kevin Fitzgerald's goal to make it to to one.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And then you and your fellow teammates linemates seniors Tristan
- 1:03Speaker 1: Fraser and the Tabor he slip combined to get Tristan
- 1:05Speaker 1: his first of the year. Walk me through the first one, though,
- 1:08Speaker 1: what'd you see to get the puck to Kevin?
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the I remember, I think it was just stalled
- 1:14Speaker 2: and they had three guys in They are very heavy
- 1:18Speaker 2: h what's it called team crowd teams, so they had
- 1:22Speaker 2: a lot of guys in the pile and just try
- 1:24Speaker 2: to get it to the weak side where hopefully one
- 1:26Speaker 2: of our deer forwards was and fifty was wide open
- 1:29Speaker 2: and had a really nice shot. So that was pretty
- 1:31Speaker 2: much all him.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And then the second one you assisted on your two
- 1:35Speaker 1: fellow seniors. You guys just seem to have a good chemistry.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah, just playing with each other a lot like we've
- 1:40Speaker 2: been We've been here together four years, played on the
- 1:43Speaker 2: ice a million times together, made a million passes together,
- 1:46Speaker 2: so by now we kind of know where each other are.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I it was an easy rush. Taber gave me the
- 1:52Speaker 2: puck to get to the middle. I gave it to
- 1:53Speaker 2: him outside and he made a great pass to Tristan
- 1:55Speaker 2: who was sneaking into the slot. So just being predictable
- 1:59Speaker 2: and under standing with each other are it's really easy
- 2:02Speaker 2: when you're doing it a lot with each other.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So you three have played over one hundred games each
- 2:08Speaker 1: for the Yukon Huskies. Tell me about your relationship with
- 2:12Speaker 1: these two. You've been through the wars with these two
- 2:14Speaker 1: guys and many others throughout your four years.
- 2:17Speaker 2: No, Yeah, I think it's a lot. We've had a
- 2:19Speaker 2: lot going on our four years here, and I think
- 2:22Speaker 2: it just made us closer. Like we've lived with each other,
- 2:26Speaker 2: We've battled with each other, we've been through the tough times,
- 2:28Speaker 2: we've been through the good times, and I think just
- 2:30Speaker 2: like if you can go through those tough times with
- 2:32Speaker 2: each other and deal with that as like a group
- 2:35Speaker 2: and a family, you only come out stronger. So it's
- 2:38Speaker 2: been a long, long three years that we've had so far,
- 2:41Speaker 2: and I think right now we're kind of just in
- 2:45Speaker 2: the flow state of our in our civil role.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, how'd you spend your offseason? I'm sure you're up
- 2:50Speaker 1: on campus a lot, improving what in your game or
- 2:53Speaker 1: just trying to improve yourself.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean after last year we took some time off,
- 2:58Speaker 2: Like it was a long season and obviously didn't end
- 3:01Speaker 2: the way we wanted to. But like, once school ended,
- 3:04Speaker 2: I took like two weeks off, came back up here
- 3:06Speaker 2: and just started working out with more pretty basic summer.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I wish I could say I did a lot more,
- 3:11Speaker 2: but a lot of it was just working out up here,
- 3:13Speaker 2: training and doing some work on the side.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But yeah, what how has Mo's workout summer sessions changed
- 3:22Speaker 1: from when you first got here? Have they changed much?
- 3:24Speaker 2: No, Like some of the lifts changed, but majority is
- 3:28Speaker 2: all the same. The intensity is always there, getting us conditioned,
- 3:32Speaker 2: Like we're always one of the most conditioned teams on
- 3:34Speaker 2: the ice. I don't think we've ever been out like
- 3:37Speaker 2: out conditioned or tired on the ice and teams taking
- 3:40Speaker 2: advantage of that and that's a huge, huge shout out
- 3:44Speaker 2: to MO for that. But no, nothing's really changed. I
- 3:47Speaker 2: just say, like the intensity each year, it gets more
- 3:49Speaker 2: and more intense because we're trying to reach our overarching
- 3:51Speaker 2: goal of winning a national championship.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So right, you mentioned not getting tired, But this team
- 3:56Speaker 1: has a ton of speed and that's something that you
- 3:58Speaker 1: hung your hat on last season for the success that
- 4:01Speaker 1: you had. What makes a good four checker, Jake, what's
- 4:04Speaker 1: the success going to it? Just hard work.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It's a hard work and you have to be a
- 4:08Speaker 2: smart player. Like we go through a lot of pre
- 4:12Speaker 2: scouts and trying to understand how teams want to break out,
- 4:15Speaker 2: So obviously the effort has to be there, wanting to
- 4:17Speaker 2: skate in and get in hard, but also being smart
- 4:20Speaker 2: with not just working to work. We say that a lot,
- 4:23Speaker 2: not just working to work. You want to work smarter,
- 4:25Speaker 2: not harder. So when you're for checking, you don't always
- 4:28Speaker 2: have to go in one hundred miles an hour. Sometimes
- 4:30Speaker 2: you have to read off of what F one's doing
- 4:33Speaker 2: or where you have to be. So I think we do.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We do a really good job of understanding where we
- 4:38Speaker 2: need to be as four checkers in the as three forwards,
- 4:41Speaker 2: and I think that's why it's been so successful.
- 4:46Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on the team so far? Four
- 4:48Speaker 1: games in two and two.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Obviously we'd we'd like to be four and a we'd
- 4:53Speaker 2: like to be three and one, but I think it's
- 4:56Speaker 2: still it's taking each day, day by day. Like the
- 5:01Speaker 2: earlier part of the season, I think is one of
- 5:02Speaker 2: the hardest parts because everyone's looking.
- 5:05Speaker 1: To the future.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's really easy to say we want to be in
- 5:08Speaker 2: this spot in March and in April, but these the
- 5:12Speaker 2: games that are at the beginning of the year are
- 5:14Speaker 2: so important. So just taking each day by day and
- 5:17Speaker 2: understanding that it's not the end of the world what
- 5:19Speaker 2: our record is right now. We just have to keep
- 5:21Speaker 2: growing and getting better and becoming a more complete product
- 5:24Speaker 2: each day.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Mick Perusi's one of your assistants. He came on board
- 5:28Speaker 1: last season. How's he helped. How's he change things a
- 5:30Speaker 1: little bit with the coach Cavin Tyler.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think he's a Those three pieces together are perfect
- 5:36Speaker 2: with each other. I think Perusi brings in a great
- 5:39Speaker 2: bit of energy and obviously a bunch of knowledge to
- 5:41Speaker 2: help our team out. And he's just he's so. He's
- 5:44Speaker 2: awesome to be around. He's so loud, he's so I've
- 5:47Speaker 2: never seen someone care more about what they do than
- 5:49Speaker 2: Nick Perusi. He's a true he's awesome to have you.
- 5:52Speaker 2: We're very lucky to have him.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Doesn't get any easier. This coming weekend, Terriors of Boston
- 5:58Speaker 1: University home and Home Friday Day again as Saturday at
- 6:01Speaker 1: on campus.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Here.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Look, you have a lot of great Hockey East rivals.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Where does BU stand in the Yukon rival side of things?
- 6:11Speaker 1: So it is your rival.
- 6:13Speaker 2: I don't know if we have a rival, but I'd
- 6:15Speaker 2: say Bu is one we get very excited to play
- 6:17Speaker 2: every year. They're a very good hockey team, have a
- 6:20Speaker 2: bunch of skill. But I like our squad. I think
- 6:23Speaker 2: we we always we always embrace the challenges when teams
- 6:26Speaker 2: are said to be these historic teams and we're Yukon
- 6:30Speaker 2: who We're trying to make a name for ourselves now
- 6:32Speaker 2: and I think we are doing a good job of it.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So we love these games. Bu's always one that's easy
- 6:37Speaker 2: to get up for and it's going to be a
- 6:38Speaker 2: great game.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Agannis is a great barn. What's your favorite road venue?
- 6:43Speaker 1: There's a lot of good ones in the league for sure.
- 6:45Speaker 2: In the league, I think the coolest barn I've ever
- 6:47Speaker 2: played at is uh Main and up in Roano that
- 6:50Speaker 2: was that environment was one of the coolest ones. But yeah, Bu,
- 6:55Speaker 2: b U's definitely a cool one too.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Look forward to seeing your Friday. Let's get a win.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Thank you for your time as always, young man.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Thank you very much, appreciate it all right.
- 7:04Speaker 1: That is Jake Percival for MeV on his teammate Tristan
- 7:06Speaker 1: Fraser's next as The Yukon Hockey Coaches Show continues here
