- 0:00Before the men's game Friday night, Bob Joyce and Gino Oriema. We'll be
- 0:04talking to Yukon Women's Hoop from seven to eight pm this week. It's live
- 0:08from the Duncan Music Lounge that's always a great venue at the iHeartRadio headquarters in
- 0:14Hartford. All here on the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app,
- 0:17Inavarsitynetwork dot Com. Dan Hurley with US Coach lists look ahead to Gonzaga.
- 0:22They're tenth in the country. It's life without Drew Timmy who scored twenty three
- 0:27hundred and seven points there in his career. They don't have Julian Strather either,
- 0:32but they did acquire if it's the right term, Ryan Membard, the
- 0:37point guard from Creighton. So where are they at Gonzaga as a team as
- 0:41you look at them going forward, they got some size, they got some
- 0:44big guys that can shoot it. They still score very effectively, and they're
- 0:47off to another good start. Yeah. I think just like you know,
- 0:52a bunch of teams, maybe eight, ten, twelve teams. I mean,
- 0:57they're they have the potential to, uh, you know, to get
- 1:00to a Final four and compete for a national championship. There you know,
- 1:04right now, a lot of new faces and obviously some some some key losses.
- 1:10Stroud there uh and Drew Timmy, you know, both were two of
- 1:14the best players in the country last year. And you know, Nemahar it's
- 1:18certainly a you know, a great addition. Uh e k the center from
- 1:22Wyoming, you know, is a tremendous player. They've got one of the
- 1:27best freshmen you know in the in the country on the wing, who's a
- 1:33big time shooter, Hickman. You know, it's a guy that we faced
- 1:36last year. And obviously we're very familiar with with Nemahart. So you know,
- 1:40we're playing one of the best uh, you know teams in the country
- 1:44uh in Seattle, and it's just a it's a great chance for us to
- 1:49measure ourselves against, you know, the type of team that you'd have to
- 1:53beat, you know, in a Sweet sixteen game or you know, an
- 1:57Elite eight game, you know, to potentially get to a Final four or
- 2:00even you know, in the Final four. They're that talented and you know,
- 2:06and and the program obviously it's had incredible success coaching against one of the
- 2:09best coaches in the country. Yeah, they've had wins already against usc Ucla,
- 2:15Syracuse. They lost to Purdue by ten. They they've just played really
- 2:20well over so many years for Mark few and twenty four years. I want
- 2:23to ask you about those two big dudes though. They got Ben Greg Braden
- 2:27Huff, both guys six ten and they're averaging about eighteen points between them.
- 2:31But they also they both shoot it well from outside the arc, which is
- 2:35kind of a challenge, isn't it. And they're both coming off the bench,
- 2:38you know, they're not even their starting players. Watson's a tremendous player
- 2:45and a starter for them last year. So yeah, I mean, we've
- 2:49given up. You know, our three point line defense has not been what
- 2:53my what my three point line defense has been historically, and in studying that,
- 2:59you know, we've given up, you know, quite a bit at
- 3:02the at the five spot, you know, we just we've got to get
- 3:07out there better, you know, guarding the other team centers. I think
- 3:10twenty percent of the threes we've given up at a very efficient close to fifty
- 3:15percent rate have come from the other team's center. So obviously it's a challenge
- 3:21for Donovan to get out there as big as he is and and then from
- 3:25with Samson it's been a lack of awareness sometimes because he certainly has the athleticism
- 3:31to get out there. But yeah, both those guys can hurt you from
- 3:36three. Watson could hurt you a little bit from three. Ek can hurt
- 3:40you from three as well. He took eight threes against Edie in that game,
- 3:47you know where they were very competitive and probably kicking themselves because they had
- 3:52some chances to to kind of stay in that game tight let at halftime and
- 3:57you know, blew some kind of transition chance that would have made that game,
- 4:00you know, a possession game down the stretch. Yeah, all four
- 4:04of those guys you just mentioned shoot over forty percent from three point range.
- 4:09I mean, Ukon's on top of the Big East and so many categories points
- 4:12margin, field goal percentage, defense, rebounding, assist, the turnovers.
- 4:16But at the three point line, as you just mentioned, giving up thirty
- 4:19seven percent. As you look at that, you're still a very good defensive
- 4:25team, but not out at the arc for the most part. So what's
- 4:28happening there? How do you adjust? Can you make it better? Is
- 4:31that something that is a physical thing or is that a mental thing going on?
- 4:35Yeah, I mean we're not you know, we don't have the athleticism
- 4:40in length, yeah that we had particularly a card lose you lose Hawk,
- 4:45you lose Andre, you lose Naheim. I mean those are bigger, really
- 4:48athletic players that could crush her and speed the other team up and just make
- 4:55them uncomfortable. And then when maybe they got a decent look at three,
- 5:00they were dealing with major athleticism in length and and sped up. We don't.
- 5:08Obviously Steph could potentially help that. I think us guarding the other team
- 5:13centers, I think and not giving up such efficiency at the five spot certainly
- 5:17will help that. But yeah, the other thing we're not doing is creating
- 5:23turnovers, and I just think that we've got to be more disruptive. Uh.
- 5:27I think we've been you know, soft the times defensively, at least
- 5:30in comparison to how our teams have looked in the past. That's something that
- 5:35we're you know, I'm looking in the mirror as a coach on ways to
- 5:40fix. Yeah, getting Steph Castle back could help you. Though he's six
- 5:44' six, he plays really solid defense for a young guy. I think
- 5:48he's had what about played had ten points in the two games he's been back
- 5:54for rebounds, five assists, He makes plays and he's able to get to
- 5:58the rim and finish. How does Castle help you defensively on the perimeter with
- 6:02his size and his athleticism. Yeah, I mean just the six to six
- 6:09you know he's got, he's got his good feet, uh. In terms
- 6:12of staying in front of the ball, I mean he's got a great just
- 6:15center, center of gravity and strength to uh to be just a lockdown on
- 6:23ball defender, you know, just having that size and athleticism where he can
- 6:28he can erase a mistake by you know, rotating and getting a deflection,
- 6:32rotating and blocking a shot. I think he came from the weak side against
- 6:38Carolina on a post move from Baycott and blocked his shot in the post with
- 6:44his left hand and got us out in transition. So he's definitely gonna help
- 6:48our three point line defense. And then I think, you know, he's
- 6:51a guy that you know we're gonna need to uh, you know, you
- 6:56could put it. You look ahead to some of the guards in our league,
- 6:59like a Cole who's such a good player and so hard to guard,
- 7:02and your only hope against guys like that is to put put size on them.
- 7:09That could stay between them and the rim and try to bother them.
- 7:12And you know, we've got a couple of months to really you know,
- 7:15get Steph ready. So those types of matchups in February March. Yeah,
- 7:20but you know, I have a great seat for most games, sitting on
- 7:24the court and watching him defend. The other day against Arkansas Pine Bluff,
- 7:28I realized how difficult a guy he is to go against because not only is
- 7:31he big, he's got that great lateral movement, the long arms. I
- 7:34mean, he makes it tough on the ball handler, and that really is
- 7:38where your pressure defense begins, isn't it. Yeah. I think he's going
- 7:42to help a lot, just get us back on track, closer to our
- 7:46identity in terms of the disruption, and then he makes us deeper. So
- 7:51obviously it keeps us fresher where we can guard and sustain a level of intensity
- 7:58at that end of the court. You know. And the unique thing for
- 8:01him is he's, uh, you know, he could guard multiple positions.
- 8:05You can guard one through four and in some cases one through five, So
- 8:07he's a switchable defender. And I think he's you know, if we're gonna
- 8:13go to that to that level, that we were last year in terms of
- 8:16being truly one of the best teams. He's got to have his fingerprints all
- 8:22over it. Yeah, I'm totally with you on that. We have one
- 8:24more segment with Dan. I think, no, that's it, you're done.
- 8:28Oh wow, we get here. So ratings, big ratings. Yeah,
- 8:35yeah, the ratings. We're going to get a ratings spike here in
- 8:37the next couple of minutes. Anything you want give us a little foreshadowing with
- 8:43Luke Murray before he steps in here. I mean, anything he's done that
- 8:46that you've been impressed with. I know he's I like his handwriting on the
- 8:50chalkboards, in the in the locker room, the pregame strategy stuff. I
- 8:54think his writing is actually a little better than yours. Yeah, I mean,
- 8:58I just what type of person finds his way to work with me in
- 9:05three different places? So I don't know what that is about him. Where
- 9:09he likes, he likes to he likes pain, you know, he likes
- 9:15suffering. Luke, he just hasn't learned yet. That's all three different places.
- 9:20Oh man, he's asking for it, all right, coach, We
- 9:24appreciate it. We'll see on the flight out. It's a good exactly all
- 9:28right, that's Dan Hurley back in a moment Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches show Onlearfield
