- 0:00Speaker 1: Done into my own Australia on a good morning, Good
- 0:02Speaker 1: morning to you. Tell us about this defense treaty with PMNG. Well,
- 0:06Speaker 1: it is a landmark mutual defense pact and it could
- 0:10Speaker 1: see troops deployed to PNG if it is attacked. And
- 0:13Speaker 1: we know that d Anthony Alberonizi, our Prime Minister, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: his Papua New Guinean counterpart, James Murruppi linked this landmark
- 0:21Speaker 1: packed in Canberra and they say that, well, we heard
- 0:25Speaker 1: from both of them. Of course, he said that it
- 0:29Speaker 1: was committing Australia to securing and shaping our future together.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The treaty elevates the relationship between the two nations to
- 0:36Speaker 1: the status of an alliance, and it's the first such
- 0:40Speaker 1: agreement in more than seventy years, and as we know,
- 0:43Speaker 1: only the third in Australia's history. And the PM says
- 0:46Speaker 1: it's a great honor that our nearest neighbor is our
- 0:48Speaker 1: newest ally and of course mister Mraupi also echoed that sentiment. Interestingly,
- 0:54Speaker 1: there were a few extra words from the PM. Both
- 0:57Speaker 1: the nations have also agreed not to undertake any activities
- 1:00Speaker 1: or enter into any agreements that would compromise the implementation
- 1:04Speaker 1: of this treaty. Do you think that's a thinly veiled
- 1:07Speaker 1: nod too, referencing maybe China? I'm not sure. Possibly, Hey,
- 1:13Speaker 1: very quickly, who's appealing against the sentence for the mushroom killer?
- 1:17Speaker 1: M okay? Prosecutors have today, oh sorry, yesterday lodged an
- 1:21Speaker 1: appeal against Aaron Patterson's sentence. Now we know she was
- 1:23Speaker 1: sentenced to life in prison with a non parole period
- 1:26Speaker 1: of thirty three years for killing three relatives with beef
- 1:30Speaker 1: Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms, and there was the
- 1:32Speaker 1: attempted murder charge for a fourth and she was also
- 1:35Speaker 1: found guilty there. So last week Pattison's legal team announced
- 1:39Speaker 1: it would appeal her conviction. Now the grounds for that
- 1:42Speaker 1: appeal have not been outlined as yet, but then we
- 1:44Speaker 1: heard from prosecutors and they've lodged their appeal. It's been
- 1:48Speaker 1: filed on the basis that the sentence is considered manifestly
- 1:51Speaker 1: inadequate by the prose prosecutors. Now we know that she
- 1:55Speaker 1: was spared the harshest penalty, which is life sentence no parole,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but as its staff, she could be freed by twenty
- 2:01Speaker 1: fifty six, when she'll be eighty two years old and
- 2:04Speaker 1: I thank you done tomorrow our Australia correspondent. For more
