- 0:08Speaker 1: This is a me eater podcast coming at you shirtless,
- 0:12Speaker 1: severely fog bitten in my case, underwear listening hunt don't
- 0:16Speaker 1: Eat podcast. You can't predict anything. Uh, you're honest. You're
- 0:34Speaker 1: earlier you were researching a product. I was thinking, you know,
- 0:38Speaker 1: when you're talking to Ridge Pounder, if you put it
- 0:42Speaker 1: on to the listeners, they might have input. They could
- 0:44Speaker 1: email into you about the product you're researching. Is that's
- 0:51Speaker 1: a polarizer for my new spots. It was a little earlier,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it wasn't there. I think that will solicit way too much.
- 1:09Speaker 1: So I think that every Some people would have adamant
- 1:15Speaker 1: opinions about it. Some people would be aghast. And if
- 1:20Speaker 1: you're in laws in the South, have a problem now
- 1:24Speaker 1: with what goes on. Um, I'm drinking bourbon right now,
- 1:29Speaker 1: which I just do not like. I think that. Uh.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I remember one time I got grounded for a long time.
- 1:35Speaker 1: My dad let us go on a canoe trip instead
- 1:38Speaker 1: of being grounded, which I still don't fully understand how
- 1:42Speaker 1: why he let us do that. But we were grounded
- 1:44Speaker 1: for for lying and and inn lying some more to
- 1:48Speaker 1: to to cover up the lie. And then things went
- 1:51Speaker 1: down hill from there and we got grounded, but we're
- 1:53Speaker 1: allowed to go on a Conune trip. I remember sitting
- 1:55Speaker 1: and drinking. I was fifteen, my brother was sixteen, and
- 1:58Speaker 1: I remember sitting there at the head of the White
- 2:01Speaker 1: River um drinking. I think it was Canadian hunter. And
- 2:07Speaker 1: since that day, I just have never liked this stuff.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Is that even bourbon? That's Canadian whiskey. It's a blending
- 2:14Speaker 1: this stuff man bloom, Yeah, any of this stuff, I like, uh,
- 2:20Speaker 1: Roman vodka. This has gotta be one of the more
- 2:22Speaker 1: boring beginnings that I've done. Mark, What do you see
- 2:26Speaker 1: this morning here in camp? Well, this is Mark Kenyon
- 2:32Speaker 1: pulled up in my tent door and literally the first
- 2:35Speaker 1: thing I saw, not the grass, not the sky, Mama
- 2:39Speaker 1: Grizzly and cub riding camp five ft away from the crew,
- 2:45Speaker 1: the very tent we're sitting in. Yeah, oh yeah, we're
- 2:48Speaker 1: in a tent right now. If you hear like noise,
- 2:49Speaker 1: pitter pattern noise, that's rain. So if you don't like
- 2:52Speaker 1: the sound quality of this show, that means you don't
- 2:54Speaker 1: like nature, So you should go listen to the Rob
- 2:58Speaker 1: Bishop podcast. But but this is uh yeah, the pitter
- 3:03Speaker 1: patter sounds and we've had like um, yeah, Johnny talk
- 3:08Speaker 1: about the grizzly, the other grizzly, A lot of grizz Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: that was the wee'd already. We think more than likely
- 3:17Speaker 1: that was the same Mama. Oh, I know, I'm just
- 3:21Speaker 1: saying that we had we We've been watching the sound
- 3:24Speaker 1: or cub for better well, probably half a day yesterday
- 3:31Speaker 1: as they ate berries as a vacuum berries across the tundra.
- 3:35Speaker 1: But the first grizz was also right below camp and
- 3:39Speaker 1: we had just come in after looking at some caribou,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and uh, it was the first day we got here,
- 3:43Speaker 1: so we couldn't hunt. Ye in Alaska generally think it's
- 3:49Speaker 1: fair to say germally, in Alaska generally you cannot hunt
- 3:53Speaker 1: on the same day you fly, preventing people from spying
- 3:56Speaker 1: a critter from the air and then landing near it
- 3:58Speaker 1: and shooting let a nighttime pass. I believe now that
- 4:03Speaker 1: um because they felt like even the day before was
- 4:07Speaker 1: giving too much advantage. I believe there are some sheep
- 4:10Speaker 1: units now where it's up to like three or four
- 4:12Speaker 1: or five days. That's a fact checked out. But I
- 4:15Speaker 1: think there's guys that have to go in and basically
- 4:18Speaker 1: scout for five days. Before they hunt if they want
- 4:20Speaker 1: to take a plane in or or you can walk in. Yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I know they're like, there's some stuff with not even
- 4:29Speaker 1: be able to uh, not being able to scout from
- 4:32Speaker 1: the are difficult doing force, but not being able to
- 4:35Speaker 1: scout from there? There we are, there, we are are
- 4:39Speaker 1: you guys had all gotten back to camp first, and uh,
- 4:42Speaker 1: what's that doing? I must have just peeled off to
- 4:44Speaker 1: get a little footage looking at something, and uh, yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I noticed a big blonde blob right below Geart's tent.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I came over here and we walked over the edge
- 4:54Speaker 1: and found it. And it's probably what, I don't know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: hundred fifty yards away. We saw it, we washed it
- 5:02Speaker 1: hunting it was. It wasn't eating berries, it was hunting rodents,
- 5:07Speaker 1: ground squirrels. I guess it needs mostly ground squirrels. Or
- 5:10Speaker 1: is it like a vole mole type thing there? I
- 5:13Speaker 1: mean they could be voles moles. They could be looking
- 5:16Speaker 1: for something subterranean. Because today on the way hike back
- 5:21Speaker 1: we saw some of the diggings and it's like they
- 5:24Speaker 1: just take two or three quick swipes, dig a hole
- 5:27Speaker 1: about a foot deep and then move on. Yeah, it's
- 5:30Speaker 1: amazing well, how much trouble they'll go through to unearth
- 5:36Speaker 1: something so small. Yeah, but it's if you think about
- 5:40Speaker 1: its probably don't mean power bar probably has more calories
- 5:43Speaker 1: than one of these things that they're eating. Yeah, and
- 5:45Speaker 1: they'll dig up, you know, a bunch of head sized
- 5:47Speaker 1: boulders and dig a big hole to get it out.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But then if you looked at how much time he
- 5:53Speaker 1: needs he spends to get that caloric value of blueberries,
- 6:00Speaker 1: it's probably still a good deal to dig up ground squirrels. Oh,
- 6:07Speaker 1: you think spends more energy sucking up blueberries. What I'm saying,
- 6:10Speaker 1: it's like just to you know, watching them eat blueberries
- 6:13Speaker 1: is voraciously as the blueberries, where it almost seems like
- 6:16Speaker 1: they're really mad at the blueberries. Um, that takes time
- 6:20Speaker 1: to write. So if you put if you put a
- 6:23Speaker 1: couple of minutes into a ground squirrel, it might be
- 6:25Speaker 1: that you're getting more calories. And if you put a
- 6:27Speaker 1: couple of minutes into eating lower quantity blueberries, So does
- 6:32Speaker 1: that grizzly then well then we had a whole other adventure.
- 6:37Speaker 1: You know what. Let's go, we'll take it in somewhat
- 6:39Speaker 1: chronological order. I'm gonna like, let me lay some ground
- 6:42Speaker 1: one we talked about the dr day, we're out hunting. Um.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We're in a tent out hunting caribou in what is
- 6:54Speaker 1: called the forty Mile Herd. So there's a river near here,
- 6:58Speaker 1: the forty Mile River, and and the was a caribou
- 7:01Speaker 1: heard here called the forty Mile Herd. Now I'm being
- 7:05Speaker 1: highly redundant. We've been discussing this every which way on
- 7:08Speaker 1: our hunt. But in Alaska you have about thirty five
- 7:14Speaker 1: herds of caribou. UM. A herd is defined down to
- 7:21Speaker 1: groupings of caribou that have distinctive calving summering grounds. So
- 7:27Speaker 1: these herds might overlap in the winter, but they have
- 7:30Speaker 1: distinct having summering grounds. So there's thirty five groupings of
- 7:36Speaker 1: caribou of varying numbers. The forty Mile Herd is comprised
- 7:41Speaker 1: of about fifty thousand caribou right now. The number fluctuates wildly.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So in the twenties it was down to caribou no, no, yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: that's when it was at its high. Clarify a mark
- 8:01Speaker 1: well in the twenties because of one of the theories,
- 8:04Speaker 1: as you mentioned during our hunt, was that because of
- 8:07Speaker 1: domesticated dogs coming in with a lot of the miners
- 8:09Speaker 1: and different people homesteady and checking it up. Possibly disease
- 8:13Speaker 1: was transferred to the wolves. You had such a low
- 8:15Speaker 1: predator population that that prey population the caribook exploded. I
- 8:20Speaker 1: can't remember the numbers. Quarter million, quarter million, five times
- 8:23Speaker 1: as many as today in the twenties incredible, and then
- 8:26Speaker 1: by the seventies I believe it was that number had
- 8:29Speaker 1: dropped as low as seventy three that did an account,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and this herd had six thousand, five hundred caribou, which
- 8:36Speaker 1: is the lowest it's been and known his On the
- 8:39Speaker 1: bright side though, right it's it's rebounded again and now
- 8:42Speaker 1: it's held steady that they just did a new account.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Um the figures aren't in yet, and these are pretty
- 8:49Speaker 1: accurate accounts because they're waiting until the they're waiting until
- 8:53Speaker 1: the cariboo are bunched up in the summer on feeding grounds,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and then there they get heavily pressured by mosquitoes and
- 8:59Speaker 1: it forces them to go into these groupings in like
- 9:03Speaker 1: a little ideal habitat places like on snow fields or
- 9:06Speaker 1: wind swept ridges where you get away from the bugs,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and it gets some grouped up pretty tight and so
- 9:10Speaker 1: they'll fly surveys at those times, and it's like it's
- 9:13Speaker 1: not like crazy ship like when you're trying to count
- 9:15Speaker 1: wolves or trying to count grizzlies when you're running like models.
- 9:20Speaker 1: They're out literally photographing and counting caribit. Yeah, it was interesting.
- 9:26Speaker 1: When I was flying in, my pilot was talking about
- 9:28Speaker 1: the process and he said that for a handful of
- 9:31Speaker 1: years now they've been trying to do this, but it
- 9:33Speaker 1: takes such a specific set of circumstances to get the
- 9:36Speaker 1: cariboo to group up to that degree where you can
- 9:39Speaker 1: get that done accurately, that for three or four years
- 9:41Speaker 1: they've been trying to haven't been able to get it.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And then, like you said, just this year, finally they
- 9:45Speaker 1: did have those circumstances, They got the right conditions, so
- 9:48Speaker 1: they'll have some new numbers, which is interesting. Yeah, I think,
- 9:51Speaker 1: like earlier, there's some sort of evidence that suggests that
- 9:55Speaker 1: the hurd has seems to have helped have stabilized at
- 10:00Speaker 1: around fifty thousand. But see that caribra herds are like,
- 10:04Speaker 1: you know, wildly cyclical, and it's not always understood what's
- 10:08Speaker 1: causing them to go up and down. It seems like
- 10:10Speaker 1: a valve that they can use to to to a
- 10:16Speaker 1: valve that can be turned our wolves. So they did
- 10:20Speaker 1: a mortality study up here. There's two thousand four. They
- 10:24Speaker 1: did a mortality study up here, and at the time
- 10:27Speaker 1: they had they figured at a time they had north
- 10:31Speaker 1: of forty six thousand caribou and they had some collaring
- 10:37Speaker 1: projects going on. They did a mortality studying. They figured
- 10:39Speaker 1: that in a year, if you ever heard of forty
- 10:43Speaker 1: six I think it was like an estimated forty six thousand,
- 10:47Speaker 1: five hundred caribou. And in a year they figure seven
- 10:50Speaker 1: thousand are killed by wolves, around four thousand are killed
- 10:55Speaker 1: by grizzly bears, around two thousand, five hundred are killed
- 10:59Speaker 1: by other pre editors, about a thousand die by accidents,
- 11:04Speaker 1: drowning and rock slides and all kinds of are things,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and and avalanches are a bitch on caribou. And then
- 11:10Speaker 1: about those I think they not about they know this
- 11:13Speaker 1: one exactly. I think goes eight hundreds some killed by
- 11:16Speaker 1: human hunters um And that's a lot of attrition, man,
- 11:21Speaker 1: But the herd still grew from there, just from from
- 11:23Speaker 1: you know, just natural birth. So that's where we are hunting.
- 11:28Speaker 1: The forty mile heard, the forty mile heard, Like in
- 11:31Speaker 1: Alaska they have weight somewhout different tag types on this show,
- 11:36Speaker 1: like different hunting permits where you have you know, over
- 11:39Speaker 1: the counter tags, limited draw tags. Um, we gotta like
- 11:44Speaker 1: put your name in a lottery to get awarded a
- 11:46Speaker 1: hunting permit, governor's tags where like they go to the
- 11:50Speaker 1: highest bidder um which is very contentious cont tag the
- 11:54Speaker 1: contag you hunt when you hunt the forty mile heard
- 11:56Speaker 1: is a is a registration permit and they they have
- 11:59Speaker 1: they have a mortality cap. There's a certain number of
- 12:04Speaker 1: animals that will allow to be killed and then they'll
- 12:06Speaker 1: end the season. But anyone that comes to hunts needs
- 12:09Speaker 1: to register to do the hunt. So we're hunting on
- 12:11Speaker 1: registration tags and um. When this herd right now, they're
- 12:16Speaker 1: very far removed from any kind of roads. But now
- 12:19Speaker 1: and then this herd will drift over and get out
- 12:22Speaker 1: of the highway near the highway system where people can
- 12:24Speaker 1: really get after him, and the hunt can end in
- 12:27Speaker 1: days because so many people get after him. But right
- 12:30Speaker 1: now they're very well. They have like a moat of
- 12:33Speaker 1: they're protected by a vast moat of roadless, riverless country
- 12:41Speaker 1: like you just can't get in done what to get
- 12:43Speaker 1: in here as an aircraft. And you can't hunt using
- 12:46Speaker 1: rotary wing aircraft. You can only hunt out of fixed
- 12:48Speaker 1: wing aircraft. So you're gonna use fixed wing aircraft to
- 12:52Speaker 1: transport for hunting. And so there's very limited places to
- 12:55Speaker 1: put a plane down. You know, you can't just go
- 12:56Speaker 1: laying on the plane like you can a helicopter. So
- 12:59Speaker 1: they're wee well buffet right now. Um, and we flew
- 13:05Speaker 1: in how long was I think last year? Um? For context,
- 13:10Speaker 1: I think last year and we were here, we flew
- 13:12Speaker 1: out on around they're back in toke and the and
- 13:18Speaker 1: the quota was filled, was it? Yeah? Or they were
- 13:24Speaker 1: saying they were saying that there was one or two
- 13:27Speaker 1: or three left, but like it was, it was nearing
- 13:29Speaker 1: the end. The galley checked me and said that the
- 13:32Speaker 1: one that we killed that I killed was probably one
- 13:35Speaker 1: of the last ones. I didn't I didn't even catch that.
- 13:38Speaker 1: When did the season starting? Yeah, that we're not percent
- 13:44Speaker 1: year on sou Yeah, flew in using an air carrier.
- 13:53Speaker 1: So we've we've got our names in um what was
- 14:00Speaker 1: it two thousand seventeen. Now, we we made a plan,
- 14:04Speaker 1: like we made a reservation to fly into this area
- 14:06Speaker 1: back in two thousand and sixteen. It's like you gotta
- 14:09Speaker 1: be you know, early bird gets the worm out on booking,
- 14:12Speaker 1: on booking a bush pilot if you want a good
- 14:14Speaker 1: reputable bush pilot. So we made a reservation a long
- 14:17Speaker 1: time ago to get flown in to this area and
- 14:21Speaker 1: flew in here, landed you canunt. On the first day,
- 14:24Speaker 1: went into a little scout about and shp loads of
- 14:27Speaker 1: Cariboan like we're in the herds moving, but how many?
- 14:34Speaker 1: How many do we see the first day, first day
- 14:38Speaker 1: of hunting, her first day scouting, first day of scouting,
- 14:41Speaker 1: hundred give or take dozens and dozens and dozens and
- 14:44Speaker 1: dozens dozens. Um ran into that grizzly that night any
- 14:51Speaker 1: time datnight. No, no, but we only like we're scouting
- 14:56Speaker 1: for a couple of hours time we got our camp
- 14:58Speaker 1: set up. The whole time we're setting our camp, this cable.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Then um, the first day we wake up, we go
- 15:06Speaker 1: and get on a glass and tit and then it
- 15:09Speaker 1: was like then they were just coming through. That was hundreds,
- 15:14Speaker 1: you know, oh yeah, easily hundreds of at least five hundreds.
- 15:17Speaker 1: It was. It's kind of interesting though, when and we
- 15:21Speaker 1: talked about this being maybe like a product of our
- 15:24Speaker 1: our Discovery Channel world we live in where we just
- 15:26Speaker 1: understand these areas based on a nature documentary. But when
- 15:30Speaker 1: I envisioned coming out here and seeing hundreds or thousands
- 15:33Speaker 1: of cariboos, I imagine this one single large mass, like
- 15:37Speaker 1: an amiba of cariboo flowing down the hillside. And it's
- 15:41Speaker 1: not like that. We see hundreds and hundreds of caribou,
- 15:44Speaker 1: but it's like a trickle, but it's like endless trickle.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Or here here's a dozen, or there's two, or there's five,
- 15:50Speaker 1: But you can look any different direction and here they are,
- 15:53Speaker 1: and there's more, there's more. Probably single biggest group is
- 15:57Speaker 1: that we've seen, I don't know, like on top of
- 16:04Speaker 1: those flats. That's a good point mark that you bring up, um,
- 16:10Speaker 1: is that if you, okay, imagine that, it's like plopped
- 16:14Speaker 1: you down here with with If I just plopped you
- 16:17Speaker 1: down and gave you a pair of bnoculars and said,
- 16:19Speaker 1: describe what you're seeing, you wouldn't say, oh, I'm watching
- 16:23Speaker 1: a caribou migration. You would think I'm seeing a like
- 16:28Speaker 1: a scattering of caribou everywhere I look. But then a
- 16:34Speaker 1: couple of hours later, you might be like, and I'm
- 16:37Speaker 1: noticing that this scattering of cariboos spread out over many miles,
- 16:42Speaker 1: are sort of kind of moving east, sort of kind
- 16:46Speaker 1: of being the key the key words sort of kind
- 16:49Speaker 1: of moving east, except for when they really are hauling
- 16:52Speaker 1: ass east um. And they move not like in like
- 16:59Speaker 1: not like in hardnal directions, but they're so they're just
- 17:01Speaker 1: following contours, hitting like going down ridge lines, upstreams, catching
- 17:08Speaker 1: little saddles and passes, and I think that the whole
- 17:11Speaker 1: moving mass of caribou. So you have fifty thousand cariboo
- 17:15Speaker 1: on the move, but the front, if you will, like like,
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's fifty thousand cariboos spread over twenty twenty mile width.
- 17:27Speaker 1: That's what my pilot had told me, moving in an
- 17:29Speaker 1: easterly direction, and you're somewhere in that twenty miles, and
- 17:34Speaker 1: when you're on a good tip, you're looking at let's
- 17:36Speaker 1: say three miles three mile width or two mile width,
- 17:41Speaker 1: and they have this way of like kind of following
- 17:45Speaker 1: each other. But it changes, not just throughout, it changes
- 17:48Speaker 1: day to day and also throughout the day where you'll
- 17:50Speaker 1: see a band come through and then a while later
- 17:53Speaker 1: a band that isn't related to that band will follow
- 17:56Speaker 1: their exact line, and you realize that you're witnessing in
- 18:00Speaker 1: like from your glass and tip, you're picking out that
- 18:02Speaker 1: there's sort of like today for instance, we had remember
- 18:05Speaker 1: their carry we were calling ridge runner. I don't know live.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We call all caribou fabio because the males are getting
- 18:12Speaker 1: their winter pellage and they get a big long, white
- 18:15Speaker 1: flowing main. But uh, there's that line okay, going down
- 18:21Speaker 1: the ridge, crossing the river and then coming up by
- 18:24Speaker 1: by Nipple Peak. Then there's like the line of going
- 18:30Speaker 1: up that creek all the way to its head and
- 18:34Speaker 1: crossing by gut Pile number one. Then there's a line
- 18:39Speaker 1: of coming across the high mesa by the by the
- 18:42Speaker 1: by the terraced plateau and then peeling off and going
- 18:48Speaker 1: down through the um spruce. Then there's sort of a
- 18:54Speaker 1: line that comes off the terraced Mesa and just comes
- 18:57Speaker 1: right down through gut Pile one. I love the vocabulary
- 19:01Speaker 1: with our developed to describe our entire set. Have to. Yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 1: there's certain themes that come up anatomical parts. That's pretty
- 19:10Speaker 1: consistent every hunting place that anatomical parts generally female, no no, no,
- 19:17Speaker 1: definitely not actually like a scroll mountain and just you
- 19:25Speaker 1: know what they're are kind of resent that because when
- 19:28Speaker 1: I say nipple, beute thinking male nipples. Yeah, female nipples
- 19:36Speaker 1: because of this nothing nothing sexually. No, you're no, you're yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think that like ships, people tend to name. Yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: there's like a name you're in dear too. Yeah. Yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: there's a lot more Maggie's nipples on the maps, and
- 19:51Speaker 1: there are Fred's nipples. That's true now, you know by
- 19:55Speaker 1: our fish shack um nem. Not not gonna say this
- 19:58Speaker 1: never mind. Another point though about the migration too, because
- 20:03Speaker 1: sometimes you think, like, man, they are really going every
- 20:06Speaker 1: single direction, but like you said, it's like twenty miles wide,
- 20:11Speaker 1: maybe it's forty miles long, who knows, And within the
- 20:15Speaker 1: just your little uh you know zone that you can see,
- 20:22Speaker 1: they could be going north for a little while, but
- 20:25Speaker 1: end up still like eventually, over the course of three days,
- 20:28Speaker 1: they've still moved east. You might have even seen him
- 20:32Speaker 1: going west for a little bit through the whole time
- 20:34Speaker 1: you saw him, they were going west. But again, over
- 20:36Speaker 1: the course of three days, they eventually ended up farther
- 20:38Speaker 1: east than they were at the beginning. Of three days.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Does that make sense because you're just like, You're like,
- 20:43Speaker 1: these things are going to every direction, but in the
- 20:46Speaker 1: course of three days, they they're like going the direction
- 20:50Speaker 1: they're supposed to be going. I think that if you
- 20:51Speaker 1: took any caribou and marked them at when we get
- 20:56Speaker 1: up on our glass and knob, and then you marked
- 21:00Speaker 1: that caribos any care where we see, you marked his
- 21:02Speaker 1: location and then remarked it eight hours later, that new
- 21:07Speaker 1: mark would be in some way east. Over the course
- 21:11Speaker 1: of eight hours, he would have moved eastward by whatever routed.
- 21:15Speaker 1: And then they get disturbed and then do weird stuff,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and they'll they'll get disturbed and go back direction they
- 21:20Speaker 1: came from. Something. I gotta I gotta have you clarified,
- 21:24Speaker 1: because I thought it was really cool on the on
- 21:26Speaker 1: the terms of migration is like when Mark got his caribou,
- 21:31Speaker 1: you made the comment that this caribou more than likely
- 21:36Speaker 1: had never been in that area before, and it were
- 21:39Speaker 1: at the same like a lot of a lot of
- 21:40Speaker 1: the area we're hiking on and hunting on, there's a
- 21:43Speaker 1: good chance there hasn't been you know, humans. I mean
- 21:46Speaker 1: there there could be, but yeah, just like there's a
- 21:48Speaker 1: lot of little places you could walk to be reasonable,
- 21:50Speaker 1: that like pretty reasonable that you could be like, I
- 21:53Speaker 1: bet you know guys ever stepped right here before, but
- 21:56Speaker 1: not unreasonable. On the same note, though, how these caribou
- 22:00Speaker 1: they're not like this is not their area. They're just
- 22:02Speaker 1: passing through. So you're they're seeing the country for the
- 22:06Speaker 1: first time to some extent, and you're seeing them in
- 22:09Speaker 1: that that space for the first time, which is crazy
- 22:11Speaker 1: that they're just passing through. But they still have all
- 22:13Speaker 1: these trails just beaten down into the mountain. When you're
- 22:17Speaker 1: flying over, you can't believe the trails, like thousands of
- 22:20Speaker 1: years of caribou walk in the path. It's like, you know,
- 22:24Speaker 1: it's pretty fragile ground. Everything is extremely slow going, so
- 22:29Speaker 1: you can have you know, it's probably possible that you
- 22:33Speaker 1: can have a hundred cariboo comes stamping down something and
- 22:36Speaker 1: then a year later, see, I mean it's a it's
- 22:39Speaker 1: a fragile landscape. Man. A year later it would be
- 22:42Speaker 1: that that vegetation hasn't recuperated. Now, you do that down
- 22:45Speaker 1: in southeast and the the rainforests eats it back up.
- 22:49Speaker 1: But here it's like if you you know you're walking
- 22:51Speaker 1: on mosses and lichens, and they just cut trails everywhere.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And yeah, it's not like a trail is being used
- 22:59Speaker 1: every day. But yeah, yeah. To to the to Dirt's point,
- 23:02Speaker 1: which is a point I was making, is that an
- 23:04Speaker 1: interesting thing about caribo in some Cariboo migrate a thousand
- 23:06Speaker 1: miles you know, um, these ones don't. They don't migrant
- 23:11Speaker 1: you know that far. But it's reasonable that not a
- 23:16Speaker 1: reasonable probable that when you're watching caribou, you're very likely
- 23:22Speaker 1: seeing them passed through a place for the first time
- 23:26Speaker 1: in their life, especially if it's not like a particularly
- 23:29Speaker 1: old animal, because they take these routes, these routes very
- 23:32Speaker 1: like like, for instance, a couple of years ago, this
- 23:37Speaker 1: much of this herd. And again you can't always say
- 23:38Speaker 1: like the herd, because then some will peel off and
- 23:41Speaker 1: do their own thing and not stay with the main grouping.
- 23:44Speaker 1: But a couple of years ago this group wound up
- 23:47Speaker 1: going into Ukon territory and winnering in Yukon territory, and
- 23:54Speaker 1: then that hasn't happened again in a few years. So
- 23:57Speaker 1: they don't have, you hear, like like term five ledy
- 24:00Speaker 1: with wildlife. They don't have fidelity, just specific zones. Um,
- 24:04Speaker 1: they have like some places they go habitually, but they
- 24:09Speaker 1: take different routes going through there. And then again it's
- 24:13Speaker 1: only like in a general sense where they're going to
- 24:15Speaker 1: show up. So like if you get used to you know,
- 24:19Speaker 1: white tailed deer who lives his whole life within what Yeah,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I mean they can expand beyond that for a day
- 24:27Speaker 1: or two or weeks here and there, you know, during
- 24:29Speaker 1: the rut. But a core a core range could be
- 24:32Speaker 1: forty acres and then a little larger maybe three acres.
- 24:35Speaker 1: They spend another five percent other time. But tight, yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 1: long story, shorts. Tight. So I already said I don't
- 24:41Speaker 1: wanna talk about who's here real quick. Um, as Mark
- 24:44Speaker 1: Kenyon from do you mainly like like your main gig
- 24:48Speaker 1: is Wired to Hunt, the Wired Hunt guy. I'm the
- 24:50Speaker 1: Wired Hunt guy. That is what keeps the mortars paid.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So Mark Colsa a politic cast called podcast called wire
- 25:00Speaker 1: to Hunt and and focuses um a lot of his
- 25:03Speaker 1: love and attention on on America's dear and that's the truth.
- 25:09Speaker 1: And then uh, as though dealing poker. But you have
- 25:12Speaker 1: a website too, right, yeah, yeah, so start out just
- 25:15Speaker 1: as a website Wired Hunt was a website and then
- 25:18Speaker 1: expanded to a podcast. The website was just like Tips Tricks,
- 25:22Speaker 1: it starts a blog, so it was how twos and
- 25:25Speaker 1: then my own experiences and stories and news and conservation
- 25:28Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff related to the white
- 25:30Speaker 1: tail YouTube the whole nine yards. Why the name Wired Hunt.
- 25:34Speaker 1: You're playing on two things there. Yeah. Yeah, So the
- 25:38Speaker 1: long the short story would be, I was working an
- 25:41Speaker 1: internship in New York City and my job was basically
- 25:45Speaker 1: two work with bloggers and the digital media to help
- 25:49Speaker 1: promote products. And so I read all sorts of stuff
- 25:53Speaker 1: related to that Wired magazine being one of them, and
- 25:56Speaker 1: also so that just would always bring to my mind
- 25:58Speaker 1: different things related to technology everything like that, and I
- 26:02Speaker 1: wanted to create a deer hunting website but for the
- 26:04Speaker 1: next generation that was tech savvy, and also the audience
- 26:07Speaker 1: would be tech savvy. But then also the way I
- 26:09Speaker 1: would communicate things that related to deer hunting would be
- 26:12Speaker 1: in a different way. So that's where weird Hunt came.
- 26:15Speaker 1: So that the the tech side, but then also I'm
- 26:18Speaker 1: just wired different, right, those people that absolutely love to hunt.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You're wired to hunt. It's in your blood. It's just
- 26:22Speaker 1: part of you. So yes, double meaning worked out kind
- 26:25Speaker 1: of nicely and it stuck and then um, the eagles
- 26:31Speaker 1: here now, and then uh, mr Doug darn hello anything
- 26:39Speaker 1: else you? When I add Dug, I would say, um.
- 26:43Speaker 1: When we were talking about this caribou behavior, I was
- 26:47Speaker 1: surprised at how uh I mean, I expected to see
- 26:51Speaker 1: groups moving together, then moving generally in a direction, But
- 26:56Speaker 1: I was surprised at how many individuals I saw doing
- 26:59Speaker 1: there their own thing. Yeah, just sort of meandering their
- 27:04Speaker 1: way seemingly with total disregard with for what everyone else
- 27:09Speaker 1: was doing. Generally youngsters and cows. Yeah, yeah, the occasional bull.
- 27:15Speaker 1: But if you notice the biggest, the big bulls, like
- 27:20Speaker 1: the I mean the it's a percent a percent of
- 27:24Speaker 1: what you're looking at. Our big bulls. The big bulls
- 27:27Speaker 1: are are two things with a bunch of other big
- 27:30Speaker 1: bulls with cows. I got a question, is this similar to,
- 27:37Speaker 1: again going back to my bread and butter white tails?
- 27:39Speaker 1: So white tails have bachelor groups in the summer, all
- 27:41Speaker 1: these guys are all together, but as that testosterone rises
- 27:44Speaker 1: towards the rut, eventually those groups break up and then
- 27:47Speaker 1: you see them much more and much more solitary fashion.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Will that happen with the caribou. Are there on those
- 27:51Speaker 1: sort of bachelor groups now, but as they head into
- 27:54Speaker 1: later in September and October, are they gonna break up? Man?
- 27:57Speaker 1: That that's that's a great question. I'm sure just pe
- 28:00Speaker 1: they could answer really well. But a couple of thoughts
- 28:03Speaker 1: on one. I don't know if there's I don't know
- 28:07Speaker 1: if those groupings you're seeing when you're when you're seeing it,
- 28:09Speaker 1: like it seems like when you get into the really
- 28:11Speaker 1: big bulls, so like the big dominant bulls tend to
- 28:14Speaker 1: be in packs of three, four or five that seemed
- 28:18Speaker 1: to be affiliated with a group of cows. I don't
- 28:21Speaker 1: know if those groups of bulls are just changing all
- 28:25Speaker 1: the time, you know that, Like I don't know that
- 28:28Speaker 1: those bulls are because there's you're talking about so many
- 28:31Speaker 1: animals moving all the time. I kind of picture it,
- 28:34Speaker 1: at least picture it being that those that those groupings
- 28:37Speaker 1: are fluid in nature. And then if you went a
- 28:41Speaker 1: month ago, that the a little bit surprised that the
- 28:44Speaker 1: groupings were the same a month ago. But I don't
- 28:46Speaker 1: really know. I'm sure there's people that could know, and
- 28:48Speaker 1: I'm sure they'll get ahold of us and tell us
- 28:50Speaker 1: where I'm wrong. The other thing is I always thought
- 28:52Speaker 1: that down the road you would have them become more aggressive.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Remember hunting in early October and still seeing bles traveling
- 29:00Speaker 1: in big groups. So I don't know when it is.
- 29:04Speaker 1: I don't know if the relationship is quite like elk
- 29:07Speaker 1: where they turn into or deer so many other things
- 29:10Speaker 1: where other servants, where there's that same level of hostility
- 29:15Speaker 1: from one bull the next. You do see these bulls fight,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know, you know you see him fight inspire. But
- 29:20Speaker 1: I don't know if they get as intolerant of other
- 29:26Speaker 1: males being really close to them. Is some other animals
- 29:29Speaker 1: get intolerant of other males being close to them? I
- 29:32Speaker 1: think so. The only thing I read about the run
- 29:34Speaker 1: as we were getting ready for this trip was that,
- 29:36Speaker 1: unlike elk to keep a harem or try to protect
- 29:40Speaker 1: the harem once it gets going, these bulls don't protect
- 29:43Speaker 1: the harem. They protect a zone, They protect a chunk
- 29:46Speaker 1: of land, and so any other bull it tries to
- 29:50Speaker 1: come into his zone gets run out, and the cows
- 29:53Speaker 1: that come into his own must get bread, but he
- 29:56Speaker 1: lets him go. He doesn't like keep a harem. But yeah,
- 30:00Speaker 1: we have to get we have to get some kind
- 30:02Speaker 1: of caribou expert down because what's what's hard for me
- 30:05Speaker 1: there is that would mean that all the movement ceases
- 30:09Speaker 1: unless he's got a traveling zone. It could be he's
- 30:16Speaker 1: got like they he's got a bubble that moved, Yeah,
- 30:21Speaker 1: a bubble of influence that he carries with him through
- 30:24Speaker 1: all these passes and valleys. But what I do know
- 30:29Speaker 1: is this first, so guy here had a little and
- 30:36Speaker 1: that grizzly, like a lot of grizzlies, like you know,
- 30:41Speaker 1: you kind of get as close as you get as
- 30:44Speaker 1: close as as responsible because you'd like to observe them.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And then he's very close to camp, So then we're
- 30:50Speaker 1: kind of thinking, at the end of observing him, I'm like,
- 30:52Speaker 1: would be a good idea to have him move along
- 30:54Speaker 1: his way and not be hanging out here. So we're
- 30:56Speaker 1: gonna try to spook him off a little bit, let
- 30:59Speaker 1: him know we're here so he doesn't just then turn
- 31:01Speaker 1: around and feed right back up into camp and potentially
- 31:03Speaker 1: get himself and do a whole bunch of trouble and
- 31:06Speaker 1: stand up and start getting the old hey, and like
- 31:08Speaker 1: a lot of grizzlies, that entices that at first just
- 31:11Speaker 1: means that it gets his attention. He starts coming towards you.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It happens all the time, and then you get up
- 31:17Speaker 1: and raise Holy hell, and you can usually move him along.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Um that happened. Woke up in the morning, went up
- 31:24Speaker 1: to a knob. And then you start trying to put
- 31:30Speaker 1: together like, well, what is a big bull? And that
- 31:36Speaker 1: just comes from watching, you know, like facting, like trying
- 31:44Speaker 1: to like to see what's possible out there, right, I mean,
- 31:48Speaker 1: you get in. The opportunities you have are so many
- 31:51Speaker 1: because you're just seeing so many of them go through.
- 31:53Speaker 1: And if you watch like a hundred of them and
- 31:56Speaker 1: a bunch of bulls, you start going like, so that's
- 31:58Speaker 1: what a large one looks like. You need that reference point,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and then you establish your reference point. We had the
- 32:05Speaker 1: exceptional out of the average. It's funny though, right when
- 32:08Speaker 1: we landed, me and Doug came in first and we
- 32:10Speaker 1: got dropped off for anybody else, and me and Doug
- 32:13Speaker 1: was gushing because like, oh my gosh, that was the
- 32:15Speaker 1: hugest bull. It was monstrous, And now as I look
- 32:19Speaker 1: back on it, after we've seen hundreds of bulls, wasn't
- 32:23Speaker 1: really that big? Or just because the first one we
- 32:26Speaker 1: saw we had nothing to compare it against. And I
- 32:30Speaker 1: think we get a picture of that bull, I don't think, well,
- 32:34Speaker 1: I don't think so, because it'd be interesting to look
- 32:36Speaker 1: at it because and and like all the other bulls,
- 32:39Speaker 1: you see a whole bunch. I mean, I don't know,
- 32:41Speaker 1: what do we see a hundred colls and calves to
- 32:43Speaker 1: every bullet you see, so you know, whatever number that happened,
- 32:48Speaker 1: But it's it's definitely more calls and calves and young
- 32:51Speaker 1: bulls and stuff until you see bigger bulls. And like
- 32:54Speaker 1: with that group, when we first flew in, there were
- 32:56Speaker 1: all these other caribou, and then he was there and
- 33:00Speaker 1: he was significantly bigger than the rest of him. And
- 33:03Speaker 1: so of course that's your reaction or our reaction, and uh,
- 33:08Speaker 1: and it was I would say it's what was a
- 33:10Speaker 1: white tail hunters reaction when when looking at like the
- 33:18Speaker 1: place I used to do that I've done maybe most
- 33:22Speaker 1: of my yeah, probably most of my carribou hunting. I
- 33:24Speaker 1: think it's been on the north slope of the Brooks Range,
- 33:26Speaker 1: in areas where you're not really able to get in on.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I mean, it's possible that could happen. But generally you're
- 33:33Speaker 1: not able to get in on these big, these big
- 33:37Speaker 1: you know, migration paths of caribous. You're you're you're looking
- 33:40Speaker 1: at caribou in summeringe ground dispersed over a vast, vast area.
- 33:48Speaker 1: And yeah, it would be like to go up there
- 33:50Speaker 1: on the north slope on a road system hunt. It
- 33:53Speaker 1: would be laughable that you would be able to sit
- 33:56Speaker 1: around and cherry pick bulls, like we're cherry picking bulls.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Therell be like if you see a bull, you'r you
- 34:01Speaker 1: better just get your ship together and go, because you
- 34:04Speaker 1: count yourself lucky, you know. But here is that you
- 34:08Speaker 1: just get I mean it's not even it's like hunting,
- 34:11Speaker 1: but it's like a little different than hunting. But hunt
- 34:15Speaker 1: for that one you want, the big player is still hunting,
- 34:19Speaker 1: but it's it's unlike anything I've ever so different than
- 34:23Speaker 1: most honey, But the excitement will be equivalent. When you
- 34:26Speaker 1: see the one that is stands out, that thrill will
- 34:30Speaker 1: be there. You won't be like that's another you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: another bulle. It's gonna be like, oh, that's the one. Yeah.
- 34:36Speaker 1: But you know what's missing. What's missing is the idea
- 34:39Speaker 1: of and it happens antelope hunting too. What's missing is
- 34:43Speaker 1: the idea that you won't get one, the fear of,
- 34:46Speaker 1: not not the fear of, but like a lot of
- 34:49Speaker 1: times in hunting you're like, it's like, will I get one? Yeah, okay,
- 34:53Speaker 1: and that's the thing, but you said it can't shut off,
- 34:56Speaker 1: like there is a slight chance and not probably they
- 34:59Speaker 1: just it on but tomorrow, and it was Yeah, but
- 35:04Speaker 1: as much as hunting, it's about putting yourself in the
- 35:06Speaker 1: middle of this spectacle. You know, hunting is almost secondary
- 35:12Speaker 1: to the hunting is secondary to the experience of being there,
- 35:16Speaker 1: the experience of like being and seeing like sounds. But
- 35:19Speaker 1: it's true in this case, I think that's the perfect word. Yeah, no,
- 35:22Speaker 1: it is. It's like you're witnessing a mass migration of
- 35:27Speaker 1: large mammals. You'd never understand it unless you came here
- 35:30Speaker 1: and saw it. You just you just wouldn't know. So
- 35:34Speaker 1: there was that was some hunting mixed in, but it's
- 35:36Speaker 1: like it's just not like I'm even like, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 1: people spend a lot of time, myself included, talking about
- 35:45Speaker 1: fair chase issues and you kind of get into like
- 35:48Speaker 1: like caribou hunting in a situation. In a situation like this,
- 35:51Speaker 1: which which for men who will be a once in
- 35:52Speaker 1: a lifetime situation, I've seen it. I've I hunt a
- 35:56Speaker 1: tremendous amount. I'm in my early forties. I've seen this twice.
- 35:59Speaker 1: So you get into a situation where it's like, uh,
- 36:04Speaker 1: you know, all of the stuff we talk about fair
- 36:06Speaker 1: chase and all that, I don't know. I don't know
- 36:09Speaker 1: if if this is this fair, I don't know to
- 36:13Speaker 1: go ahead, to go get any individual one, to go
- 36:17Speaker 1: get any individual one is like it feels to me
- 36:21Speaker 1: like it has the level of uncertainty that we would
- 36:25Speaker 1: expect from a from what people like to describe as
- 36:28Speaker 1: a fair chase hunt, but when taken in the whole
- 36:31Speaker 1: population and the ability to get a animal seems like
- 36:36Speaker 1: a pretty foregone conclusion the minute you hit the ground. Well,
- 36:39Speaker 1: that's a good example of what I what I'm talking
- 36:41Speaker 1: about is like the one that we saw that you
- 36:44Speaker 1: and Doug went after and it just didn't work out
- 36:47Speaker 1: any part I want to get. Yeah, that's a great point.
- 36:49Speaker 1: And we're watching all these ones. The minute we pick
- 36:53Speaker 1: one out and go that's the one, somebody give us
- 36:56Speaker 1: the slip. I can't find them, and that's your that
- 37:00Speaker 1: you're like bar of scale from there they're on out. Yeah, yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 1: there's certainly I mean, you gotta climb mountains, so you
- 37:07Speaker 1: gotta run after him. You might get fogged out, Like
- 37:10Speaker 1: there's fair chases, there's elements of over one just trying
- 37:14Speaker 1: to like be out in a place it's very inhospitable.
- 37:17Speaker 1: And then a lot of people aren't comfortable deal with grizzlies,
- 37:21Speaker 1: which is a daily occurrence, yeah, or daily occurrence, seventy
- 37:28Speaker 1: sleeping in a tent and seventy mile hour goss, the
- 37:31Speaker 1: potential of getting annihilated by biting insects. So yeah, I
- 37:34Speaker 1: mean there are like tons of things that make it.
- 37:37Speaker 1: But I'm just talking about that like distinct, you know,
- 37:40Speaker 1: when it when it's the kind of hunt that the
- 37:41Speaker 1: minute you get out of your tent you could start
- 37:44Speaker 1: shooting caribou and then you could shoot them until the
- 37:48Speaker 1: sun goes down. It's just it's different at all point.
- 37:52Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's less. I love it, but it's
- 37:55Speaker 1: just different. And I will say that it is certainly
- 37:58Speaker 1: not less. The difficulty of the hunt for someone, um
- 38:03Speaker 1: like me, who's you know, I'm I'm a white Midwest
- 38:06Speaker 1: white tail hunter. Um and yeah, I got ready for Yeah,
- 38:11Speaker 1: that was an interesting you put in there. That's how
- 38:14Speaker 1: a white Midwest white tail hunter. Oh sorry, you got
- 38:19Speaker 1: this talking juice here in front of me, tasteful. I'm sorry, yeah,
- 38:25Speaker 1: but no, I know, thanks for the correction. Uh oh
- 38:30Speaker 1: you are. I am a white Midwest white tail hunter.
- 38:37Speaker 1: I sweetly am. So there's so many parts there. I've
- 38:43Speaker 1: never done anything like this. Um. I know you guys
- 38:46Speaker 1: do way more difficult hunts than this, but this is
- 38:48Speaker 1: the most difficult hunt that I've ever done, and it
- 38:52Speaker 1: is the most interesting hunt that I've ever done. But
- 38:55Speaker 1: when it came down to the moments with the decision
- 39:01Speaker 1: that we went after the first one, you talk about
- 39:03Speaker 1: that because I want and sticking to my chronology, talk
- 39:06Speaker 1: about talk about that we finally find one and then
- 39:10Speaker 1: you can't then you turn out that you can't get them,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and yeah, and that, and that caribou was exceptional based
- 39:22Speaker 1: on what I had seen in the first four hours
- 39:25Speaker 1: of hunting, but it wasn't even that. He was just
- 39:28Speaker 1: exceptional to everything that we had seen up to that point.
- 39:32Speaker 1: And so I'm at that point, I'm like, Okay, now
- 39:35Speaker 1: I understand, and away we go and into thin air.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Gone except for these guys said, oh no, you you
- 39:43Speaker 1: guys went down there and they were already around you.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And and uh, yeah, because you're trying to Yeah, you're
- 39:49Speaker 1: trying to head. I mean every time we've gone after cariboo,
- 39:53Speaker 1: you're trying. You're you're trying to one. You spot them
- 39:55Speaker 1: way off, you try to get you try to figure
- 39:57Speaker 1: out their trajectory, which is somewhat predictable because you look
- 40:02Speaker 1: at whoever was out at whatever group came before them,
- 40:06Speaker 1: and then you got to make up your mind and
- 40:08Speaker 1: in this hull ass and try to get there before
- 40:12Speaker 1: they do. And I would say we missed them by way, yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 1: And I would say about that when you said before that,
- 40:18Speaker 1: then you could shoot. You could get out of your
- 40:19Speaker 1: tent and start shooting cariboo and shoot caribou all day long. Yeah,
- 40:23Speaker 1: but that, of course we could. And that's just such
- 40:27Speaker 1: an unusual thing to be around. But then to go
- 40:31Speaker 1: out there and pick that, and then we began to
- 40:35Speaker 1: hunt because you are I mean, you're spotting, and then
- 40:37Speaker 1: you're hunting, and you're going you're anticipating where they're going.
- 40:40Speaker 1: You're trying to get there, and every bit of that
- 40:42Speaker 1: was a part of a spotting sock as far as
- 40:45Speaker 1: I was concerned. And you know, we were disappointed, and
- 40:50Speaker 1: uh we didn't I didn't find that animal. And we
- 40:55Speaker 1: took kind of a loop and we're coming back and
- 40:57Speaker 1: here come up. Here come a bunch of younger caribou,
- 41:01Speaker 1: and amongst them were a couple of bulls, and one
- 41:04Speaker 1: was a really nice bull, and he closed within seventy
- 41:08Speaker 1: five or eighty yards of us. In there, some of
- 41:12Speaker 1: them run run away, some of them running a circle
- 41:14Speaker 1: away from you, and then they come back because they're
- 41:16Speaker 1: sort of curious about your They don't understand what you are,
- 41:19Speaker 1: but they're definitely alerted to you. And uh, most of
- 41:23Speaker 1: them have no human experience. They just doesn't clip. They
- 41:27Speaker 1: don't see you and going, oh ship right right run.
- 41:31Speaker 1: And so this which was an extremely suitable bull um,
- 41:36Speaker 1: came within seventy five yards of us and gave us
- 41:39Speaker 1: a show of uh fabulous of defiance of interests. I
- 41:48Speaker 1: am the animal was spectacular, and I never picked my
- 41:54Speaker 1: rifle up. I was so caught up in the whole thing,
- 41:59Speaker 1: and I asked you a couple of times, what do
- 42:01Speaker 1: you think? And you said, that's a heck of a
- 42:03Speaker 1: You may have said that's a hell of a uh,
- 42:05Speaker 1: that's a dandy. That's I mean, he said several times,
- 42:09Speaker 1: and you know, you can shoot that one, and I or, yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 1: I totally understand if you did. And I just point
- 42:16Speaker 1: out that it wasn't the one we were looking. That's
- 42:18Speaker 1: the other part of it. I had that exceptional one
- 42:20Speaker 1: to to compare it to. And I just got um
- 42:25Speaker 1: completely caught up in the moment of watching all that happening,
- 42:30Speaker 1: and if and I realized now or I realized in
- 42:33Speaker 1: retrospect that I knew that it could happen again. I
- 42:36Speaker 1: knew that it would happen again. I would have been
- 42:38Speaker 1: surprised after that it would happen again. So I enjoyed that,
- 42:42Speaker 1: And I didn't regret not shooting that caribou. Yeah, I
- 42:50Speaker 1: think it was. Part of it was that he just
- 42:53Speaker 1: wasn't the one we went after. And then it felt like, um,
- 42:57Speaker 1: like an unearned thing. I don't know what it was.
- 43:00Speaker 1: I could I couldn't put my finger on it at
- 43:02Speaker 1: the time, and I can't put my finger on it now.
- 43:05Speaker 1: It was that was my first encounter like that, and
- 43:10Speaker 1: it was just that was enough, and he wasn't. And
- 43:13Speaker 1: you said to be a couple of times used with
- 43:15Speaker 1: that look, and that's he's he's not like the one
- 43:17Speaker 1: that we were we went after. That's not the one
- 43:20Speaker 1: we went after. And when you're seeing so many of them,
- 43:22Speaker 1: you kind of wanted to be the one you're going after.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Yeo shows up. But that's that's where it is. Like,
- 43:30Speaker 1: that's the thing that always trips me up is how
- 43:33Speaker 1: much sort of mental masturbation is going on at a
- 43:37Speaker 1: lot of mental masturbation. It's very difficult to explain that
- 43:41Speaker 1: that would have a very difficult time. Like if I
- 43:43Speaker 1: went home and I was like, oh man, you know,
- 43:46Speaker 1: hundreds of them coming by. My wife said, well why why,
- 43:50Speaker 1: why wouldn't you just be done right away? Then I
- 43:54Speaker 1: had to be like whoa, you know, it was someone else,
- 43:58Speaker 1: like an outside perspective. You never really get to where
- 44:03Speaker 1: they were satisfied. I mean you could shoot one opening
- 44:08Speaker 1: morning and still enjoy the spectacle for three days. You
- 44:12Speaker 1: never got introduced. Bro we quit the introductions. Yeah, Brodie
- 44:18Speaker 1: Henderson happy to be here with it, witnessing the spectacle,
- 44:23Speaker 1: those little guy fishing guiding and the works with us
- 44:27Speaker 1: guidance season is all done. Yep, thank god. Um yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 1: witnessing the spectacle. So me and dog got dupe. Then
- 44:39Speaker 1: we go back up to the glass and tips and
- 44:41Speaker 1: lo and behold here comes some legit, full on balls
- 44:43Speaker 1: out migrators, right Mark, Yeah, talk about that. Yeah, So
- 44:47Speaker 1: you guys got back up there. We sit down, we
- 44:49Speaker 1: eat some Sammy's kind of relaxed a little bit, not
- 44:52Speaker 1: relaxing well, getting that we're glassing as we sat and
- 45:00Speaker 1: that we were looking across that whole bowl where the
- 45:02Speaker 1: terraces were in the tops and everything, and I just
- 45:05Speaker 1: remember looking across there, just to the right and below
- 45:08Speaker 1: the terrace and just spotting these white these fabios, and
- 45:12Speaker 1: be like, I think those are new bulls. And we
- 45:14Speaker 1: pulled up the glass on him and yeah, five new balls,
- 45:18Speaker 1: and then a big old stream of other cows and
- 45:19Speaker 1: calves above them, and then unique to a lot of
- 45:22Speaker 1: the other ones we saw, which were more than meandering type.
- 45:26Speaker 1: These guys are on a mission. And so if I
- 45:29Speaker 1: remember right, we we looked him over pretty good. Didn't
- 45:32Speaker 1: take too long to realize there was there was one
- 45:34Speaker 1: or two in there that were worth our attention. So
- 45:37Speaker 1: they kept piling down that hill and then you're like, hey,
- 45:42Speaker 1: we should make a move on them. So we grabbed
- 45:45Speaker 1: our gear and took off down the hill. They disappeared
- 45:50Speaker 1: behind this one knob, not number one, right, And all
- 45:54Speaker 1: I remember is we go scooting down into this little ridge,
- 45:58Speaker 1: this little rise, and then I just remember when the
- 46:02Speaker 1: whole herd peeked over that first knob, and I just
- 46:06Speaker 1: felt like I was watching like I don't know, something
- 46:08Speaker 1: in the Africans serengetti, like just this massive. This was
- 46:12Speaker 1: like a miniature version of what I imagined it would be,
- 46:15Speaker 1: like this mass of like flowing animals down the hillside.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Many tons worth of animals, Yeah, many tons worth of
- 46:22Speaker 1: animals of mass. Yeah yeah, let off by this big
- 46:27Speaker 1: old white man bulls. Yeah, they were up front, they
- 46:31Speaker 1: were that bull. Um was he is either out of
- 46:37Speaker 1: all the hundreds of care but we've seen in two
- 46:41Speaker 1: and a half days of observation, he's either number one
- 46:47Speaker 1: or number two in which respect the biggest ones we've
- 46:50Speaker 1: looked at. Yea, so here's that he might be number two,
- 46:54Speaker 1: number one being the first. I think the slip, I can't,
- 46:58Speaker 1: I don't know. I wish how happens though it looked like,
- 47:02Speaker 1: yeah he would, Yeah, he would. I put a bet
- 47:05Speaker 1: on the fact that the one that gave us a
- 47:07Speaker 1: slip was bigger as it should be. Yeah, lives on,
- 47:15Speaker 1: he lives on. But yeah, but the Serengetti is coming,
- 47:20Speaker 1: Seenge is coming our way, and man, like it was
- 47:24Speaker 1: just for me. It was the weirdest experience maybe I've
- 47:28Speaker 1: ever had hunting. Like it was just this like moment
- 47:31Speaker 1: of there's so many different things going on, right, I mean,
- 47:34Speaker 1: it was so different than any other hunt I've ever
- 47:35Speaker 1: been on, and just the whole spectacle of it, not
- 47:39Speaker 1: only the Willer spectacle, but also then our whole deal,
- 47:43Speaker 1: all these different people. You know, there's four or five
- 47:45Speaker 1: of us sneaking down there. Um, we got laid down,
- 47:49Speaker 1: We saw there angling our away. We had a good
- 47:50Speaker 1: spot to set up and uh laid down, put the
- 47:55Speaker 1: rifle on the backpack. You were so kind to share
- 47:59Speaker 1: your range acto with me for a little bit. Bigger
- 48:03Speaker 1: gal like yeah, And then they just came angling down
- 48:05Speaker 1: our way, and I was like, holy sh it, this
- 48:07Speaker 1: is actually gonna happen. And it's funny. At some point
- 48:10Speaker 1: you go like, oh, they are going to come through here.
- 48:12Speaker 1: In that veer off in some crazy as direction. Yeah,
- 48:15Speaker 1: and like it wasn't though, Like I feel like in
- 48:17Speaker 1: most other hunts, you get to like mentally process what's
- 48:20Speaker 1: happening and like all right, yeah, like this is the
- 48:23Speaker 1: anual I'm going to shoot and kill her. This is happening,
- 48:26Speaker 1: or yeah, I want this to happen. It was like
- 48:28Speaker 1: I'd gotten on a roller coaster at the top of
- 48:29Speaker 1: that hill and then I was just tearing down it
- 48:32Speaker 1: all the way through this moment, and um, going into
- 48:37Speaker 1: this whole thing, I was like, I really hope I
- 48:38Speaker 1: don't shoot one on the first day. I really want
- 48:41Speaker 1: this to be like a long experience and to feel
- 48:43Speaker 1: all the way. But this was just like I was
- 48:44Speaker 1: tearing down that hill on the roller coaster and it
- 48:47Speaker 1: was happening. I was like whoa. And so he comes
- 48:50Speaker 1: up and he's angling and we're ranging him, and he's like,
- 48:52Speaker 1: you know, two seventy five to fifty. I just remember
- 48:55Speaker 1: like two thirty five somewhere with this last range I've
- 48:58Speaker 1: gotten And then like you said, blow or blouch or
- 49:01Speaker 1: whatever it is you'd like to say, but yeah, it
- 49:05Speaker 1: was funny because there's him and another couple and they
- 49:08Speaker 1: were kind of stacked coming in and out, and they
- 49:10Speaker 1: were just moving there on the move. So I tried
- 49:13Speaker 1: to find a moment when the other ones weren't behind
- 49:15Speaker 1: him and let him have it, and unfortunately was able
- 49:18Speaker 1: to get the job done. But here's the thing about
- 49:20Speaker 1: so you kind of bummed me out now about the
- 49:22Speaker 1: first day thing. You don't know what's like I've seen
- 49:28Speaker 1: plenty of times and all of a a sudden, just what
- 49:30Speaker 1: is it right now outside? Oh yeah, I'm not, I'm not.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I'm not disappointed anyway, can see fifty yards because it's
- 49:36Speaker 1: like there are so many things that screw you. Oh yeah,
- 49:40Speaker 1: it's just like it's like it's clear, that's a big bowl.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Oh I'm glad we do what we did. I'm glad
- 49:48Speaker 1: it happened. At might you wake up to my own
- 49:50Speaker 1: and it's fog, and then it's fog, and then it's
- 49:52Speaker 1: fog the next day and nothing ever happened. It's like
- 49:55Speaker 1: you have to just pick your moments. But in that
- 49:59Speaker 1: scenario when you've been for whatever at that point, we've
- 50:02Speaker 1: been out in the field for six eight hours, well
- 50:05Speaker 1: maybe more twelve counting the day before, and you're just like, oh,
- 50:08Speaker 1: that's the hundred i've seen, like, you know, you're feeling
- 50:13Speaker 1: pretty cocky about it. It was wild, but I don't
- 50:17Speaker 1: even know if I wasn't like I feel like because
- 50:19Speaker 1: you Doug went on that stock, and so this whole
- 50:21Speaker 1: time was like Doug was hunter. I was an observation
- 50:23Speaker 1: mode and then like that switch flipped all of a sudden, Bam,
- 50:27Speaker 1: You're in hunter mode. And it was that transition all
- 50:29Speaker 1: of a sudden, like my mind was readjusting to my
- 50:32Speaker 1: new reality. And it was just it was a super crazy, interesting, unique,
- 50:37Speaker 1: once in a lifetime experience the whole thing and um,
- 50:41Speaker 1: and then walking up on that animal was pretty like
- 50:45Speaker 1: it was all like started becoming so real like that
- 50:48Speaker 1: as an incredible animal. Just just it was also different
- 50:52Speaker 1: wild and for me too from sitting the distance that
- 50:55Speaker 1: I was watching this unfold, and I've seen other people
- 51:00Speaker 1: shoot white tails from a distance, but it wasn't any
- 51:04Speaker 1: just completely unique experience watching this happen unfold in front
- 51:10Speaker 1: of me, and I thought it was a completely different,
- 51:14Speaker 1: uh distance, it seemed like they were closing, closing, closing.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Boy's gonna let him get really close. And then we
- 51:20Speaker 1: got down there and went, holy man, he shot this
- 51:22Speaker 1: thing at two or thirty five yards. Yeah, in these areas,
- 51:26Speaker 1: distance becomes very difficult perspective. Things are far the way
- 51:31Speaker 1: than you think they are. They're closer than you think
- 51:33Speaker 1: they are. You start walking towards something that seems a
- 51:35Speaker 1: million miles away, and in fact it's not. Yea, we've
- 51:39Speaker 1: talked about that. Um. Then we butchered out, and just
- 51:44Speaker 1: as we're leaving, we wanted to hunt some more. We
- 51:46Speaker 1: want to go back up to our glass and tit
- 51:49Speaker 1: and butchered out. And I was because of grizzlies. I
- 51:52Speaker 1: was like, let's move, um, the meat away from the
- 51:58Speaker 1: guts because when air comes in, they just go and
- 52:01Speaker 1: eat the anything's gonna come, and just eat the soft
- 52:03Speaker 1: tissue first, because you just goulup down because they don't know,
- 52:06Speaker 1: as far as they know, a bigger bears gonna come
- 52:08Speaker 1: and steal the whole damn thing from them, So when
- 52:10Speaker 1: they swoop in, they just want to like, you know,
- 52:11Speaker 1: you get what you can get and then work on
- 52:13Speaker 1: the other stuff later. A couple years ago, my brother
- 52:16Speaker 1: lost the elk to a grizzly and he had had
- 52:21Speaker 1: all four legs on the bone and boned out everything
- 52:23Speaker 1: else and it ate all the boneless meat and buried
- 52:29Speaker 1: the bone in meat. So they do know like what
- 52:33Speaker 1: they can gobble up quick and what takes time, and
- 52:36Speaker 1: and and like think about that. So we move the
- 52:40Speaker 1: meat I don't know, not even a hundred seventy five
- 52:42Speaker 1: yards away, not just to give a little buffer. And
- 52:45Speaker 1: we knew we're gonna be sitting there staring right at it.
- 52:48Speaker 1: And we get back up to the tent and here
- 52:51Speaker 1: here comes the griz out and we watch that thing
- 52:58Speaker 1: cover two miles. Do you think it's that far? Oh? Yeah,
- 53:01Speaker 1: I think it's from the plate where it popped up
- 53:05Speaker 1: to where it ended up running at a run. And
- 53:09Speaker 1: I'm like, the wind wasn't right, but I'm watched to say.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I'm like, after a while, me and dirt almost made
- 53:14Speaker 1: a bet. I couldn't have sound like it's unmer it's undeniable.
- 53:19Speaker 1: This bear is jogging with its nose in the air,
- 53:25Speaker 1: is jogging over an incredible distance towards this gut pile.
- 53:29Speaker 1: But the wind was wrong, So I'm like, how would
- 53:31Speaker 1: it be aware of it when the wind is what
- 53:32Speaker 1: it's doing. And then it turns out that just for
- 53:36Speaker 1: some inexplicable reason, it was running all that way toward us,
- 53:40Speaker 1: because it finally gets within like easy striking distance of
- 53:43Speaker 1: that gut pile, stops dead ass cold, and spends the
- 53:46Speaker 1: next hour eating blueberries slightly upwind of it, like it
- 53:50Speaker 1: was in kind of some rocky, sparse vegetation hit that
- 53:55Speaker 1: that barry buffer lush stuff. Yeah, because she was traveling
- 53:59Speaker 1: across just open you know, just rock and moss really
- 54:06Speaker 1: and then yeah, and I think she had her nose
- 54:08Speaker 1: near like she might smell. I don't know if they
- 54:10Speaker 1: got an ability to smell good concentrations of blueberries, but
- 54:14Speaker 1: she just traveled through the shitty ground, that little cub,
- 54:16Speaker 1: bouncing a long bind her. He stopped rassling with the
- 54:19Speaker 1: cariboan at one point he like barrel rolled down the
- 54:23Speaker 1: hillside sat and she winds up getting down into the
- 54:29Speaker 1: blueberries and just sets to eating, and then kind of
- 54:31Speaker 1: paralleled us when we got our meat, and headed back
- 54:35Speaker 1: kind of parallel us the whole way, and then we're
- 54:37Speaker 1: staying in our camp this morning. I never got that
- 54:41Speaker 1: ship pull circle wise. Garrett, poor Garrett though this morning.
- 54:45Speaker 1: So I opened that tent door and holy crap, there's
- 54:48Speaker 1: a mama and cub. And I didn't hear you, right,
- 54:50Speaker 1: I see it hop by my tent. Start yelling and
- 54:53Speaker 1: then it starts to meet up. Kind of was like
- 54:55Speaker 1: kind of half away. I think, you know how you
- 54:57Speaker 1: kind of gotta take away. Oh um here like grizzling camp.
- 55:06Speaker 1: And then so I yell and then she kind of
- 55:09Speaker 1: speeds up a little bit and goes over the hill
- 55:11Speaker 1: and I'm like, all right, we're all good on the
- 55:13Speaker 1: other side of the yelling and I'm like, oh ship,
- 55:15Speaker 1: he's right there. Girls is calmly out there waving it.
- 55:20Speaker 1: I was brushing my teeth. I was like, well, if
- 55:22Speaker 1: the yelling doesn't do it three yards and she stood
- 55:29Speaker 1: up when I first when we first like she saw
- 55:32Speaker 1: me up. I was not aggressively, but I think like
- 55:35Speaker 1: trying to figure out what was going on. And then uh,
- 55:40Speaker 1: Janice and Chris and the tent that she had passed,
- 55:43Speaker 1: you know, very recently prior started yelling. She kind of
- 55:47Speaker 1: took off. But there was a moment there where I
- 55:49Speaker 1: was like, well, we'll see what happens, because you just
- 55:53Speaker 1: don't know what and you can't. I mean, I knew
- 55:56Speaker 1: like if she was threatened, I didn't have anything that
- 56:00Speaker 1: was gonna prevent her I don't think you want to
- 56:04Speaker 1: do with me. Some years ago, we had a grizzly
- 56:06Speaker 1: coming toward our camp and you know what he was there.
- 56:08Speaker 1: We were shooting rocks in front of it, like full
- 56:12Speaker 1: on shooting rock trying to stop it. We tried a
- 56:14Speaker 1: lot of stuff before that, but the eventually we're resorting
- 56:16Speaker 1: to like shooting and it still keeps coming. You still
- 56:19Speaker 1: know what their aunt he is gonna be like, man, yeah,
- 56:24Speaker 1: and like the fact that you know who knows it.
- 56:27Speaker 1: With the cub, I always just even extra cautious or
- 56:31Speaker 1: you know literally that they're gonna be more aggressive. I
- 56:35Speaker 1: feel like you were lucky in that scenario. I mean,
- 56:38Speaker 1: that's as as bad of a situation as you want
- 56:40Speaker 1: to get into. Is surprising a mom on the cub
- 56:43Speaker 1: and she didn't see you know, she didn't see me
- 56:45Speaker 1: when she first came over. But I don't be loved.
- 56:49Speaker 1: If you've gotten a little bit of a scuffle with that,
- 56:51Speaker 1: well me too, if I got a scar out of it,
- 56:54Speaker 1: and that's all, I would love that. I've always thought
- 56:57Speaker 1: that would be good. I'm knocking on wood because just
- 56:59Speaker 1: a scratch how to come in there slinging on you
- 57:02Speaker 1: to halfter. But that's the most casual reaction to a
- 57:05Speaker 1: grizzly bear ever. I well, we'll see what happens. Oh bullshit,
- 57:12Speaker 1: in this one. That was amazing. Yeah, they're they're a
- 57:17Speaker 1: gray animal, man. I mean, they really get your attention. Yeah,
- 57:21Speaker 1: you know, I used to be kind of I used
- 57:23Speaker 1: to be more afraid of them. Um it used to
- 57:26Speaker 1: be more afraid of But now, like, I still have
- 57:28Speaker 1: a lot of respect for him, But I also kind
- 57:30Speaker 1: of like when I see him, I'm always kind of
- 57:33Speaker 1: rooting it. They'll come closer, but not too close. Internet
- 57:38Speaker 1: I like having them near me. I would put our
- 57:43Speaker 1: observations and encounters with grizzly bears in this trip as
- 57:47Speaker 1: just as enjoyable for me as the spectacle of seeing
- 57:50Speaker 1: all the cariboo and even killing a cariboo. Like I
- 57:53Speaker 1: enjoyed our grizzly encounters just as much. Like when I
- 57:56Speaker 1: go back, that's going to be something that I'll remember forever.
- 57:59Speaker 1: Just Male's face when he stood up or came up
- 58:03Speaker 1: where we could see him, that's burned into just the
- 58:06Speaker 1: coolest critters. Yeah, no here man, Just like the room
- 58:13Speaker 1: they have, the room, you know, Yeah, the fact that
- 58:19Speaker 1: there was two points to intersect like us in them
- 58:22Speaker 1: such a vast landscape, you just realize how special that is.
- 58:26Speaker 1: You can just watch him not be you know, in
- 58:29Speaker 1: a survival mode, and they can you know, they can
- 58:33Speaker 1: get pretty old, but you still get the sense that, um,
- 58:37Speaker 1: when you're out here and looking at it, you still
- 58:39Speaker 1: at the sense that like this is probably or you know,
- 58:43Speaker 1: it would stand the reason that this is his first encounter,
- 58:47Speaker 1: this is his first reckoning with a person. Yeah, it's
- 58:52Speaker 1: a way different kind of Grizzly than you'd see in
- 58:54Speaker 1: Montana or I don't and that gets a different version
- 58:57Speaker 1: of who's had experience kind of knows what to think
- 59:02Speaker 1: about still, And I've said this over the course of
- 59:06Speaker 1: the past couple of days a few times as we've
- 59:07Speaker 1: talked about some things related to us. But it's just
- 59:09Speaker 1: like it's good for my soul to know that there
- 59:14Speaker 1: are still places that that can happen, Like to know
- 59:16Speaker 1: that that could be really that Grizzly has not encounter
- 59:19Speaker 1: person before. Like that's just like a satisfying notion. Oh
- 59:23Speaker 1: for sure, man, glad to know that's the case possible.
- 59:29Speaker 1: But it's the thing that happens to people. Where is
- 59:33Speaker 1: the thing that has people where they tend to I
- 59:36Speaker 1: think that people tend to be like, oh, places like Alaska, Well,
- 59:40Speaker 1: that's a suitable place for wilderness. But then not think
- 59:43Speaker 1: about not think about like equivalence at home, you know,
- 59:48Speaker 1: and don't and and don't strive towards, um, don't strive
- 59:52Speaker 1: towards thinking about the possibility of of of things being
- 59:59Speaker 1: more steem, more appear, more wild closer to home. We
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: have this thing like you relegated to this other locale
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: because you come up here and like what's up here
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: it just isn't what's here isn't replicable anymore down there,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: you know, A good way puts. I was talking to
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: my brother. I think I might talk about this before,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: but one of my brothers, Um, you know, he's he's
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: a fisher, he's ecologist and does a lot of work
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: in Alaska, and we were talking about conservation and he
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: was saying that, Um, that the difference between his line
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: of work done here in his line of work done
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: in the lower forty eight is there not here. They're
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: not in rebuild mode. They're trying to understand something that
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: they're in a position of trying to understand something that
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: exists and head off trouble down the future. But you're
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: not rebuilding anything. And the lower the eight conservation is rebuilding.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: It's repair and appear in a lot of places there's
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: not like there's it's not repair, it's holding the line,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: you know. And those are like two very different views
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: on are two like very different ways to comprehend wildlife
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: and wildlife conservation equally important, I guess the right man.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: But yeah, you're you're approaching it from a position of
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: you can kind of and this is the broad generalization,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: but you can kind of approach it to be like, yeah,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: you're not Yeah, you're you're looking to head off problems
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: rather than fix them. In down there, we're fixing things,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: you know, trying to get things back or you know,
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: in many ways very successfully, right, very very successfully, but
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: trying to like somehow set a clock back in some
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: way fix the mistakes of the fifty years ago and
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: then things were later here where people were a lot
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: more like once there's starting to be such a big
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: human footprint here and it's gonna grow. But um, people,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: you know, some of those some of those some of
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: those moments when we were most rampant in our destruction.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: There wasn't also a very loud enlightened voice. And I
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: think that right now, as you know, as you can,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: you know, as people comprehend more development in Alaska, more
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: industry in Alaska, there's like like a pretty loud enlightened
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: voice that has taken a lot of lessons that we're
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: learned in other parts of the country and using them
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: to like avoid mistakes that we've made. Now just understanding
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: the interconnectedness of things and realizing that the things that
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: you do have there's implications to the actions you take.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: It's interesting that the same pressures are still there from
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: the other side too. You know, I don't know who
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: said this stuff, but history might not always repeat itself,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: but it usually rhymes. And I feel like, let you
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: see that kind of thing happening. I hadn't heard that.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: That's good. That's good. So today we had that Grizzly
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: went out hunting, and um, you realize that like kind
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: of like plays out in the same way. Watched and
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: watched him, watched, watched and watched him, watched. Finally some
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: big bulls came rolling through and then then Doug wept
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: into action spring. It might be worth noting his close
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: call earlier where he really wanted that one bull dog,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: like that whole scene there, we're on that side hill,
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: he's coming up the hill. I'm looking at him. That's
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: a nice bull I've been walking. I've been walking like
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: where he's headed. It would be a downhill hike. Already
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: told you that morning he was thinking about going on
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: quote a mega hyke. Doug didn't like the sound of that.
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: I didn't want to talk you out of that bulldog,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: but I was trying to, like by by not paying
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: it a whole lot of attention, attention and scanning the
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: distant horizon. I was trying to convey to you that
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: we had yet arrived. Steve went and sat like thirty
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: yards away, just kept looking at the stuff. Can't see
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: over there. Yeah, I was like acting like that bull
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: wasn't I mean, no disrespect of that bowl. I was
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: trying to pretend that he wasn't there in an effort
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: to influence your thinking. And then it was funny. Doug
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: looks at me. He's like, Hey, I'm gonna go over
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: at Steve and and tell him that I think that,
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: you know, maybe I want to take this bullets. Good
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: situation and if Steve wants to go over there, he can,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: he can just go and I'll hang out here and
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: watch to see what this one. So douges walking over there.
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: A sist next to Steve and he says it and
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: here's kind of like we'll look at these over here.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: But he also said, I appreciate you. You're willing to
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: let over there and you'll stay here. And I don't
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: want I mean, let's you know, let's face it, I'm
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: the old guy in the group and I'm u. I'd
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: like to say that I'm like the old the old bull.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I'm the last one always um, you know, hanging I'm
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: not hanging back. I'm just slow. That's along and the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: short of it. And I don't want to influence. I
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: don't want that to necessarily influences, uh, someone else not
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: doing what they want to do. And uh. And I
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: would have been perfectly content to what to sit there
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: and watch that ball and not necessarily shooting, but to
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: watch you all the way around there, thinking it's just
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: like would be the world's biggest mooch for you to
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: go all the way around there and and maybe they
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: bump and come that way. But but I also appreciate
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: the fact that one you were recent said, I appreciate
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: that that and at that time comes I'll let you know,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: but um, I don't think you want to shoot that ball.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: And I was pretty sure I wanted to shoot that bull,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: but you just never know what's coming over and you know,
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: but if we go over here, and so we did,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: and you know, and it turned out to be a fantastic,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: fantastic afternoon. I think it's something we should cover because
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: this is weird conundrum when we keep saying like, oh,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: it's a nice bull, that's a nicer bull, like they're
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: all nice. Of course. Yeah, but he said it pretty
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: good when he said we just hadn't arrived yet. We
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: just needed to walk a little bit more, look around
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: a little bit longer, much like I didn't shoot that one.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: After we went that and saw that really big one,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: and it wasn't I mean, everything that went through my
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: mind when I saw that that other and Cayman was
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: near us, that I just I just wasn't. It just
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: wasn't right. And I don't know how else to describe it.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: And and so that's why I didn't and and uh,
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: my wonderful friend here, you know, he said, let's let's
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: let's go over here, and uh so we did. I know,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I know what you're getting at, young, because like this
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: weird luxury to like play this game that you're talking about,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: this mental masturbation. We're like, if we were really hungry,
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: we wouldn't be doing any of this bullshit, Like we'd
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: be in Bang bang bang and be done. But that's
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: what that that's that's what I'm beginning about. The mental
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: masturbation game is like I mean, you know me, well,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: I like meet and antlers meet more than antlers, but
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: in this case you get to have both. Yes, I
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: read a quote the other day also like to have them,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: but I don't feel like I just read a quote. Guys,
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: I really you know, I hunt, um let's help for meat,
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: and I've really developed a taste for six. Yeah, it's like, yeah,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the main thing I'm after like if like you know,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: I've thought this before, if you if I had a
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: dead Caribo land or anything carriboo, what we've seen anyone
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: at all? And I had a dead Caribo Land there
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: and and in God came down and said you gotta
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: you can take the rack or the meat. I wouldn't
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: even think about it, right, I'm gonna take the meat.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: But here, that's what I'm saying. Part of the thing
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: is there's so many of them, and you're trying to
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: to to milk out the experience. And I do like
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: to have antlers around a lot um. I really just
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: like that and like to look at him and think
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: about him and hold him and talk about them and
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff that here you can be like, Okay,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: barring some dramatic weather change, which I'm watching for, and
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I'm and I'm willing to alter my plans accordingly, barring
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: that in this moment, I'm gonna look for the biggest
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: damn caribou I can find. I got a theoretical question
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: as as an observer, as a cinematographer photographer, to clarify
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: this to me, I'm not pulling the trigger, you know,
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I'd love to in a different you know, circumstances. No,
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: I would prefer the photographies of but um. Say, like
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: we were in a situation where you guys hadn't had
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: an intended hunt on a specific animal. We pop over
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: a ridge and up though one. It's just like a
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: hand me that you haven't done anything specific to hunt
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: that that caribou bowl, but it is the one would
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: you hesitate for lack of the experience of hunting that
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: specific animal, or if it was big enough and it
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: was just like a staying there it wasn't an intentional,
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: you know, strategic process. Put it this way. You could
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: even make it easier. You could be like you unzipped
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: the tent just there. He isn't camp and he like
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: won't leave and he's think about you think about it.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: The camera guys, he's still standing around like some dudes
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: like making coffee. Still standing around ability It depends on
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: how good I am at mental masturbation, how good I
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: am a playing with my own mind. Well, i'd ask
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: all of you, because I would. I would say I
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: would say that it wouldn't be it wouldn't be as good,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: it wouldn't matter to me as much, it wouldn't be
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: as valuable to me. Okay, But I would also be like,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: but you'd be happy to go get this one if
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: you snuck up on it and so here it is. Yeah,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: it's really tricky, but here's nothing of value to mean.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: This is all part of the mental masturbation game, not
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: mental master. I don't want to short sell it because
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: it's not mental masturbation. It's it's like all part of
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: the way in which we perceive our world and set
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: goals and values and expectations. For instance, if if someone
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: said to you, would you rather come up with a
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: really good idea and earn a hundred million dollars from
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: that idea or would you rather just have publishers clearing
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: house show up and give you a hundred million dollars?
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: Most people are gonna say, um, well, given my druthers,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I'll go with the cool idea. And you'd be like, well,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: what's the difference. It's a hundred million dollars that you get.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Why do you give a ship? Because? How I god,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: it matters to me. It doesn't every aspect the same reason,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: like the same reason that going to prostitutes isn't like
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: that alluring to me. It's like there's a there's a
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: way in which you go after the things that you want,
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: which you don't you know, And I see that and
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: what you guys are talking about and that analogy. But
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I think if you know, leaving out all the morality issues,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: just like it's like yeah, so if he's standing there,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: I wouldn't like it as much, but it would trip
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: me up because I'd like, but there it is, you know,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: but there it is. But yeah, and I'll point out
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: and this is a value. I mean, I can't act
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: this to be a value of anything else. The two
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: bulls we've gotten had no clue we were there, and
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: that is very important to me. We were not. We
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: have not shot a bull that was looking at us.
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: You shot bulls that we I mean, you know, it's
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: it's not I don't want to oversell it. It's not
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: like like killing the elk that doesn't know you there
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: is way different than killing the care but it doesn't
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: know you there. It takes a lot more skill to
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: consistently kill elk that I have no idea you're there.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: There's no belly crawling going really on. I was answered
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: my question, it's the bigger part is that intentional effort
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: to come to that. I enjoy the journey, Yes, enjoy
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: the journey. I'd say it was honoring the experience. And
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: part of that was not that's why I didn't shoot
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: the one that I did, and then in shooting the
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: one that I did shoot. Um, So Steve says, let's
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: go over here and so I don't know. We take
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: a quite a hike and it looks like we're gonna
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: take a very long hike. And we get over to
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: this spot where we sit down and we're glassing and
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: that's all. Let's have the same thing. Let's have some sandwiches.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: It's like sandwiches. If you you need something to show up,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you say, let's have sandwiches. And I'm sitting there looking,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I can't believe we walked all the way the hell
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: over here to have a sandwich and not see any
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: carabol and we saw some you were thinking that, well
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: a little bit, but what I was really thinking up
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: on top of that, I just said so but they weren't.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: But they weren't. They didn't. They didn't appear, and they
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: took a little while. But that now we're glass and
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: caribou that are another mile and a half away and
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: talking about them, and I'm like, if they think I'm
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: gonna walk over there, you know, And then I was like,
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna get my mind right in case we're gonna
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: walk over there, so I'm gonna have my sandwich. I'm
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: gonna get my mind right, and then like magic, they
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: appear up there. Although predictable magic. I suppose they these
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: this group appeared up on top of that ridge and
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: you guys saying when you talk about these packs of
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: six seven bulls, the guy antlers you know, as tall
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: again as they are at the shoulder, and when they
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: started coming over to skyline and just look up and
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: it's just like it looks like Timber. It's like everything
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Timber coming over to skyline. Man, what was I had something?
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: I was going to add that the whole like uh mail,
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: masturbation and Ladies of the Nights experiences. Oh yeah, I
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: know what it was. Um, honey Free is a life journey, Okay.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: So it's like there's like a set of things that
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: that you're like, there's a bunch of experiences you're building,
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: and it's a discipline and it's a thing that you
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: strive to get better and better at. Right and to
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: understand better and better and better in any particular moment
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: can't really be separated from that greater life journey. So
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: here you are in this in this like hunting paradise
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: for a couple of days, but still within that are
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: you know, the skill parts, the things you strive to
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: be good at, which is like identifying an animal, selecting
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: that animal, and then getting up on it without it
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: being aware of your presence, and then killing it in
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: the very clean fashion. So yeah, you're still trying to
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: like exercise that life discipline thing, even in a situation
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: where it might not be necessary. Like the lack of
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: necessity doesn't make those things less valuable to me, exactly.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: I was thinking about this a lot after I killed
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: my caribou, and back to like, oh day one, you know, jeez,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: was that like it just happened so fast? Didn't work
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: for this? Did I earn this? And I I literally
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: thought of the story you told earlier that day. I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: think when you were talking about the Picasso story where
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: he drew a picture on a napkin and someone asked,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: you know, I can't be worthy whatever you said, however
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: much it was worth. But he said that it only
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: took you five minutes to draw that. But then he says, yeah,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: but it took me a lifetime for it to be
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: worth that much money. It was like, yeah, this is
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: a lifetime worth of work and experience that got me
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: year in whatever way to this experience. Um, while it
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: may have only been a day and a half, actually
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: out here in the tundra. A lot of things led
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: to this point exactly, exactly. Yeah, it can't be like
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: being here to see this. You can't really divorce it
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: from the broader context of things that even made you
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: aware to know to come do it. Yeah, life's journey man,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: that's the truth. I wish your honest his dad was here, guys,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: his dad to be in a hog having talked about
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: life journeys. Life journey here like figuratively and literally with
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: the caribou, they're on a life journey. And finally Dirt
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: myth is here. Oh hey, guys, we don't know if
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: it was effective or not because we don't know yet,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: but but Dirt is. Yeah, Dirt is. Uh. I know
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: Dirt didn't want to bring him up because he doesn't
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: want to um. Dirt doesn't want to seem as though
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: he's taking advantage of his of his position with desperate
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: within our friendship and organization. But but Dirt is looking
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: for a house, sitting position in the Bozeman or ranch,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: same position the Bowsman thing within thirty mile radio. If
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: you have property, horror or ranch property, and Dirt was
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: born on a damn ran, Yeah, I can be useful
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: even a song that I was gonna say. Doug wasn't
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: impressed by that. Um, the handiest handyman on the planet
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: knows how to take pictures well, fixed stuff, troubleshoot, tinker,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: no animal identification skills. Really, that doesn't know if if
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: house sitting your property involves telling chipmunks some squirrels, that's
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: a big part of it. If any defeat docks and
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: uh chickens, he can do that, thank you. Yeah. And
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: like Dirt, Dirt lives is somewhat nomadic lifestyle and in
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: his his lover um and you guys call each other,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: she loveses somewhat nomaddic lives a somewhat nomadic lifestyle. But um,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: and so it doesn't always make a lot of sense
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: for Dirt to go and have like a regular dole
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: missile that most people would recognize as such. Um It
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: oftentimes lives out of his truck. But he, being the
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: most responsible guy on the planet, is looking for that
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: thank you. Yeah, I want to give like rentals in
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: there in there if it was out of town. We're
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: looking for ideally, yeah, caretaker, just to have that that
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: responsible degree. Are you willing to work like how much
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: hours do you have to really put in your taking
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: care of said individual's property, like on average over a
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: month maybe ten? Yeah, like that's yeah. I mean that
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: the ideal situation would just be to disallow a place
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: to fall into the discrepancy or decrepit decrepance. So I
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: don't think you can add the e n cez it's
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: been too long. I'm saying no, But just to allow
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: the crepit state to maintain a place not to milk
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: your cows or so if there's a cow that needs
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: to be mild, you out just because I have a
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: job that I love, and then away forth. But if
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: someone said, hey, man, um the fences like could use
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: some TLC over time, get yeah, and you you would
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: take that on. Or if they were saying, like, hey,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: this rusty hunkle medal I wish was permanently affixed to
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: this other rusty hunkle medal, you would go and get that.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Hey we got this like old two Toyota to comas
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: in the bar a little TLC. Rebuild that second, you'd
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: rebuild it from the game. So that's that, I guess.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Get get a hold of me through uh the process.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Let's give out your phone then somebody else have me
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: like something they need to sell or anything. Now I
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: feel bad. No, no, I appreciate this is not a
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: service I really like to provide. But for you, I'll
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: provide it home placement service. Um. But but for you,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: for you, I would do anything. It's a life journey.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Who knows? Finally, Oh you're honest. Remember Yeah, this has
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: all been a test to see if John, you can
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: remember something. And now we'll see. Oh now it's got dark.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: I can't read my notes anymore. There we go. You
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: look at notes, Well we're gonna talk about the your vortex.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: Well I don't even look at notes for it. So
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: see who I am after all doing it? So? Uh,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: our good body is a vortex? Do the thing called
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: your vortex? Right? It's a it's a contest and to
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: end of the contest somehow, somehow, what's what to do again?
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: You canna submit video clips, unedited video clips of your
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: experiences that um you feel jive with the your vortex? Um,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: how would you put it? Like like great great moments,
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: great captured moments by non edited doesn't mean bad moments,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: but like you don't need to get in there and
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: manipulate the clip like get a great moment from your
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: life hunting whatever that really, you know, it makes you
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: feel pumped up about. I feel like there's gonna be
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: thousands of hunting related ones. I feel like the winner
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: of the contest is gonna be a non hunting related
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: your vortex. You watch, someone's gonna come up with something slick.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: It's not gonna be like it. It's gonna have like
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: a hint. Obviously this has to be a connection, right,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: or maybe not, because it could be just a shooting
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: sports enthusiast submits a you know, an unentited clip. Yeah,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: but I can't really speak to that world as much
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: as I can. So imagine you've got some amazing little
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: clip of uh you like, rip out of you, rip
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: out a bugle, and all of a sudden, some giant
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: bull from the craziest screaming bull right steps off ten times,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: a hundred times. I'm gonna get more excited. And I'm
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: not gonna get to judge. I don't know, maybe I will,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: but I'm thinking like someone's little kid you just catch
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: like your boy just picking up the buyos for the
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: very first time, and he puts them up and he's
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: like looks through him, holds him steady, and then looks
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: back and he's like, Daddy, Molly, I just glass stuff
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: for fill in the blank. Yeah, so stuff video clips
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: like that and you sent them in um and you
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: get as as as as marcover at Vortex put it glass,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: rich and famous because if you win, you get you
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: get like a like a get cool, expensive guarantee for
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: life optics. And then your video clip also becomes part
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: of a broader thing made from all the best emissions.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: So go where do you going to join? For their website,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: they got a button hashtag your Vortex. Go there, you
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: can read all the rules and regulations. Yea, they were
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: so clearly explained. Here are not so clearly. Go in
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: a bunch of stuff your Vortex contest, get after it.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Anybody else have anything they want to add, selling, buying, renting,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: ridge pond or you're not even I gott a mike,
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: but you got anything you want to add? I'm just
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: taking all in man, Okay, So you're not selling anything,
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: trying to get anything out of this, no, okay, just
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: to enjoin it. Roughly a year, I guess a while, man, Yeah,
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: happy to be back. No, over a year June June
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: of last year. Yeah. Here, we are happy to have
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: you back. I'm stoked to be back. Um. I'm not
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: gonna let everybody do a concluding thought because it's too
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: many concluding thoughts, but I would like to invite uh first, Mark,
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: would you like to do a concluding thought? Yeah, but
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: I think if someone really has a rip already did
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: his housing. If you have something to add, Gary, do
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: you do? All right? Thank you? So start with Mark,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: who's actually being invited to have one. Well, I appreciate
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: that invitation. Is there anything you'd like to add? You know,
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: I think it's I think we've talked about it over
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: and over again, but it's just been an unbelievable all
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: around experience. Everything from the landscape to seeing the wildlife,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: to the interactions with grizzlies, actually filling our tags, the caribou,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: the social you know, experience has been awesome, the whole thing,
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: incredible experience. Um, but being a white tail guy, you know,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: growing up doing that, there's so many people that live
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: in a place where there's white tails and they love
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: it and they eat it and they breathe it and
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: they sleep it, but they never go outside of that boundary.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: And I've been lucky the last few years to be
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: able to experience these different things, starting elk hunt, one
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: of my first animal hunt, on my first caribou hunt.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: And I think I would just encourage all those hardcore
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: white tail guys who absolutely love it and think I
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: would never want to do anything else. This is all
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: I need that there really is a lot of value
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: in experiencing these different places, these different species. Um. And
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: it's very doable. Yes, this specific type of hunt is
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: a little bit out, maybe outside of the easiest economical
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: or achievable hunt for the average guy. But there are
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: places where you can go have an incredible experience, many
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: times on public land, which is an awesome privilege we
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: have that is very affordable, not too terribly difficult. So
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: I'd say go out there and try these things. Do
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: these things, go to new places. Um. I'm really, really
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: glad I've been able to. Very thankful. Well done, Mark,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: thanks for coming on man, thanks for coming on the
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: trip with us, Thank you for having me. It's been unbelievable.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Your honey, that was a good closing thought, Mark, Thank you.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: App um M, Yeah, and I feel like this one
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: I read when Mark and I talked that was a
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: long time ago, at least we had. We did a
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: podcast and you asked me what I recommended him. Maybe
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: it was after the podcast we stayed on the line.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: You're like, I think about going to Alaska, which I do.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: I was like, Man, if I was gonna go, now
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: that I've kind of done, I've I haven't done it myself,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: but because we've been filming shows, I've seen some moose hunts,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: I've seen caribooans, blacktail, black bear, doll sheep. I was
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: gonna just recommend someone go and do going a hunter,
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: go and get like the Alaska spirit experience. I would
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: go do caribou. It's like you get the landscape and
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: you get to see an amazing migration a bunch of animals. Um,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I feel like you can do it. Sent me affordable,
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: much more affordable than mountain goat grizz or doll which
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: you're gonna have to get guided and you're looking at
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: probably you know, unless you got kid folk like me,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: see I kin folk like Steve Um Yeah, fifteen and
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: twenty dollars black bears. I feel like there's a lot
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: of opportunity in lower forty eights killed though, so I
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: don't you know, I mean, I know it's a special
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: kind of black bear hunt up here, but still can
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: be done in lower forty eight moose they're cool, but man,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: you just don't get the action. No, you're putting in
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: a lot of times action, but here like this hunt
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: and and and what I'm saying is because again I
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: don't think it's it's exorbitant, Like I think you really could.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: If you pinched it, you probably do it for less
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: than five k. Well no, not if you do well,
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: I don't know. Oh yes, no, no no, no, if you
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: road system d I y, but I think it almost
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: be worth it to skip paying the flight that year
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: to go do the road system hunt for two or
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: three grand and you know, save another year so that
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: you could fly into the bush and come and see
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: the hundreds of animals every day. Yeah, I've done I've
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: done well. Four I think four road system Carribo hunts
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: had great experiences and all of them, but like you said,
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: you didn't see this being able to fly in real
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: special I feel like this is as a lasking of
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: an Alaska experience as you could ever ask for the
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: bush plane flight alone. Oh my gosh, when when we
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: were flying in, this is kind of embarrassing. But when
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: we're flying in and I'm sitting back there just rubber
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: neck in the whole time, I literally broke out into
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: like laughter, like giggling, smiling, like I can't believe this
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: is real life right now. This is the most incredible thing.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: The really about doing caribo. If you're looking to like
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: dip your toes into um, you know, if you're looking
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: to dip your toes into a self guided hunt, and
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: I really would, there's no like, I don't Yeah, it
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: doesn't mean don't don't go hire a guide to want
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: to caribou one just go? Um? Because what was that?
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: What's what's wrong that? Well, because I think you're you're
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: assuming that everybody has the experience. That's what That's what
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: I was gonna That's what I was gonna get to. Um.
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: I think you'll be able to figure it out. I
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: think it takes the least. It's just it's very circumstantial,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: but I think like you can pull it off with
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: a lot less life experience. Then one would need to
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: pull off a lot of other non guided hunts in
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: this state. You know, It's like operating up here is
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: always is. Operating up here in any kind of in
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: a non guided sense, operating up here is vastly more
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: difficult than anything you will do in the lower forty eight.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: It just is everything is different, the gistics and the
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: safety and all that is what you gotta be good
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: at rather than being some super badass hunt. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: you need to be good at like thinking through situations
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: you might get into because you can't walk out to
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: the truck and when the weather is bad, a plane
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: is not gonna come get you, and so you need
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: to be ready to be stuck and you need to
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: be ready to solve your own problems. Is not going
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: to be a quick response time. There could be you
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: could be days away from help in an emergency. So
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: there's that, right, which is not a small thing. But
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: I would say that just the level of expertise needed
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: um in terms of finding it, like just everything. Man.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: I just think it's like a great and it's a
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: great introduction and why like why bring in the why
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: bring in the insulation and buffer of a I when
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: you could go have a more real, genuine experience of
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: figuring it out on your own. Kind of add to
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: that because he just brought it up a little bit,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: the whole mouney with the guide thing and there's the installation, right.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: And I've had this sort of a ongoing debate argument
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: with some other people that um our guides themselves. They
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: go hunt with guides, and they're like, mat love going
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: home with guides. It's like they like they know the country,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: they know like where the best of the best is.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: It's just like this great trip for me, you know,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: like all that I love about it. And I feel
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: that those people just don't value like the challenge of
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: having to go in there and figure out on their
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: own or what you just described, Like you have to
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: want to have that challenge and to be like, Okay,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: I gotta figure this out on my own because I
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: don't have the dude that you know, knows this basein
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: or knows how to walk out of here. You know
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: that unknown it to highly value that um to go
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: that route. There's some grown ups that read Harry Potter, right,
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: and there's something that read pension. It's just like there's
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: like different kinds of people, you know, there's two kinds
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: of people. People who hunt with guys because they've developed
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: this relationship with them and they want to go hunt
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: with their buddy. Every year there a guide who has
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: become a very good friend, you know. Okay, yeah, but
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: since they didn't have like hours to explain my perspective
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: and like roll in every possible caveyat, I'm just saying
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: that that this is a doable It's a doable thing.
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: If you're going to pick an Alaska hunt, an unguided
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: a last hunt, this is the one. It's a doable
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: thing if you never hunt. Yeah, I don't. I don't
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: even know why I'm even engaged in this conversation, Brodie,
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: what do you got precluding thoughts? I'm pretty much good.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just I'm glad I got to meet
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Mark and Doug and it's been awesome. No, no, this
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: is for the first time. My concluder is I hope
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: I don't have to hold onto my my tent pole
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: the night, but get touch Hurricane Force wins the first night.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: I'm gonna bring it up because this is the ship
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: that maybe maybe the camera guys need to start stepping
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: it up. And when there's gale Force wins, you guys
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: just gotta plug in the batteries and get out in
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: there and start filming so they can make it into
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: the because we had like death hikes that don't make
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: it into the show. And now the first night we
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: were here, it blows. It wasn't quite enough to hold
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: me up. I tried leaning into it a little bit
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: as I was out redoing the stakes, and it wasn't
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: quite that. But when I woke up, bro you can
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: finish up here, because that's got your stories worse. When
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: I wake up, finally opened my eyes. Well, we've been
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: in and out of leap because it was the wind
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: was shaking the tent a lot, but I'd wake up
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: and he was all good. And then finally opened my
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: eyes once and I'm like, holy ship, Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: And I can see Chris on the other side of
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: the tent, but I can also see all of the
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: tundra behind Chris. Chris the ground anymore, and I'm thinking,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: I need to just wake him up so he will
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: grab the edge and just pull it back to the
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: ground and hang on to it so I can restake,
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: which is pretty much what happened, right Chris, Yeah, so
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: we did that, but we did what that happened is
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: we restaked Brody's up restaken too over his cent. I'm like,
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: all right, he's got he got taken care of. So
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: Chris and I each dig out some ear plugs somewhere,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: putting our ear plugs and go to sleep. Sleep the
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: rest of the night. But we didn't hear Brody. Well,
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: it got worse, got a little wind ear and the
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: wind kind of shifted around to a different direction, and uh,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: half the tent blew up. And these tents have one big,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: long it's not like a teepee style tent. Yeah, he's
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: in the gear tent, and I'm in the gear tent,
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: which means like a lot of like expensive ship that
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: we need to make the show with. And and and
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: the tent blows up and the only thing holding it
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: here is the main steak. So for probably twenty minutes,
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: I'm just holding onto that steak, hoping the tent doesn't
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: blow into the canyon below us, and uh, trying to yaunt.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: These guys come and help me. But they had some
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: real good ear plugs in. Eventually it died down enough
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: where I could get get some rocks on the tent
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: and have it hold till the morning. Not only to
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: play good camper, bad camper, but ridge Pounder can bag
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: me up on this. I I'm sleeping in a little
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: three person, three person nemo tent hornet, nice low profile,
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: load of the ground, profile, lowder the ground. And not
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: just that. But as I explained the Pounder, I found
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: the lee of a hill. Then within that I found
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: the lee of a rock outcrop, and within that I
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: rocked the I like had a small quarry going on
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: and staked out and then piled rocks on my stakes
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: and I slept through that thing. You were playing a
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: long game with your tent, choosing spot, and I went
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: around spreading word to other campers in my vicinities rocking
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: out their tent. I'm very gladd well these tents were Look,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: these tents were rocked out. It was blowing hard enough
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: that that wind was moving those rocks with you. And
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: this is a very different beast because you're in You're
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: in the big gear tent. I'm in little little profile tam. Yeah,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: that that support pole was buckled in the wind man.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: It was pretty impressive. Alright. So dire, I guess you
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: get like you know, because Jannie came to your defense.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: You get a second go around on a concluder. I
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: would just say it has been spectacle ler filming and
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: photography photographed. It's been spectacular to cover this, uh the
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: spectacle up here on a forty mile herd. Sweet is it? Yeah?
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: Anyone else any last thoughts? Oh? Dog got his concluded?
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: You know? I, Um, I didn't and sorry, no Jo.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: I'm just happy to be here, um, which I really
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: am just happy to be here. But you know, for
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: someone who's done of his hunting on private land, and uh,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: not just that but land you own. Yeah, um, you know,
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: I've been supportive of conservation on public land as well,
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: but my focus has been conservation on private land. To
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: come up here and to be a part of this
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: and too be in this, to fly over it, to
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: fly into it, to be dropped in the middle of it. Um,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: it's just very overwhelming, quite honestly, to be to be here,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: and I'm so happy that it exists, and um, very
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: happy that I now have a public land story to tell.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Was that the first big game animal you've you've taken
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: that was not a white tail? It's pretty awesome. Y.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: I didn't you know, we talked about that, but I
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: hadn't really hadn't really occurred to me until until tonight.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: All right, man, well, let's let's do a moment of
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: silence to to to just experience the um the rain
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: on tenth m hmm do you have. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: thanks for joining talking
