- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:17presented by SeatGeek. This is episode four O 9.
- 0:20I'll be your host Kyle Cord. And I'm here with my Co host
- 0:23Nate Reyes. Night What up party people?
- 0:35Dude, What? What did?
- 0:38I just I don't think people get it when they're listening.
- 0:43If you've never made a podcast or attempted to make a podcast,
- 0:48the beauty of a technical like a technically sound episode.
- 0:55Just a flawless episode. Few and far between.
- 0:58Yeah, yeah, I wish. I wish it was just a regular
- 1:04thing. I wish we had a production team
- 1:06that was just like, hey, sit down.
- 1:09We got this. Speak your mind.
- 1:12Just to give you people an idea, this is coming from the guy that
- 1:15gets on, has the conversation and dips and he's getting
- 1:21nothing else. He's getting frustrated with the
- 1:23technical stuff. So you can only imagine like the
- 1:26full scope dude, it stinks because I I run into my fair
- 1:30share of editing issues and it's you're right, it's boy, yeah,
- 1:35not fun. But here we are.
- 1:37I feel like we always we always throw that out there from time
- 1:40to time. Like, yeah, we had these tech
- 1:42issues and people like have no clue.
- 1:44Or they don't care, yeah. I don't care.
- 1:47Basically what happened today as we were trying to chord is the
- 1:50the intro audio wouldn't play and it's kind of like
- 1:54technically I could edit it in and it'd be fine, but like you
- 1:58got to get the we at least it got got to get the juices
- 2:01flowing a little bit because you're going to hear it
- 2:02regardless. The classic, the infamous intro,
- 2:06but we need to hear a little bit just to kind.
- 2:08Of and then maybe some fun stuff to sprinkle in that wouldn't
- 2:11have worked either. So we got to make sure the fun
- 2:13stuff is good to go too. Yeah, I mean, you're like if if
- 2:16the sound board wasn't working, you wouldn't be able to to hear
- 2:19this. That's not me, folks.
- 2:23That's a button. Or or this?
- 2:30It's a long drum roll. That is a long drum roll A
- 2:33little little much. We got some things to get into
- 2:41today but first some three O tech housekeeping again.
- 2:45Wanted to thank you all who have joined the Facebook group that I
- 2:50started through the through the three O tech page the other day.
- 2:54So it's not like if you're if you're following the Facebook
- 2:57page, that's one thing. But like sort of through the
- 3:01Facebook page, I created a Facebook group for people to
- 3:03just, you know, hop in there, talk some ball, get updated on
- 3:07what's happening in in in the game.
- 3:09It's called Today in Baseball. It's pinned at the top of the
- 3:13Facebook page. So if you're looking for a place
- 3:15to talk some ball with some other baseball fans, get to know
- 3:18some people. Feel free to jump on in.
- 3:23Also, for a limited time, don't know how long it's going to
- 3:28stick around. The merch is back.
- 3:30We got some shirts up. The link is in the bio on
- 3:33Instagram on Twitter I believe, so you can check that stuff out.
- 3:37Got some? Got a couple shirts in there.
- 3:39I might be adding a little bit, but limited time.
- 3:41I don't know if it'll stay up forever trying to think anything
- 3:45else. If you're not watching on
- 3:47YouTube then. Figure it out.
- 3:50So that's what it was. Thank you.
- 3:52Update on YouTube. I said I want to get 2000, I
- 3:56want to get 2K by the end of 2024.
- 4:00As of right now we're it's 75750.
- 4:08So subscribe to the YouTube if you haven't already.
- 4:12Yeah, Get your grandma to subscribe.
- 4:15Get your grandma to subscribe. Get your Co worker that you hate
- 4:20to subscribe. Get your mailman, you go out,
- 4:23Exchange, Exchange pleasantries, He hand you the mail, you say,
- 4:27Hey, you following the three I'll take.
- 4:28If you snag an Amazon guy and you get him to subscribe, I
- 4:32mean, that guy's driving all day, you know?
- 4:36You know. There you go.
- 4:39Recommend if you can catch them. I mean, they're they're here and
- 4:42gone. I know.
- 4:44You share them from that weird backup reverse sound.
- 4:47Yeah, sounds like a like a dying bird.
- 4:51Very, very strange. Speaking of dying birds, Anthony
- 4:56Rendon. The guy stinks.
- 5:03Just an anti baseball guy. The guy hates baseball.
- 5:09Yeah. And when I saw, when I saw the
- 5:12headline populate, when I got the notification, my mind
- 5:17immediately went to that that scene in SpongeBob where the guy
- 5:21was like, oh brother, this guy sticks.
- 5:24That's exactly what I thought when I saw that about Anthony
- 5:28Rendon, because it it's frustrating to me that on more
- 5:33than one occasion, as recently as the start of this past
- 5:37season, 2023, because that that's when the Oakland stuff
- 5:41went down, right. The incident with the fan was
- 5:43that that was like, at the start of 2023, was it not?
- 5:46Yeah, as recently as 2023, I've defended this guy.
- 5:51But I I can no longer. I I can no longer.
- 5:55The bum list is being shaken up a little bit.
- 6:00We're going to go ahead and add Anthony Rendon to that list
- 6:03because I can't. I can't take it with this guy
- 6:05anymore. He he's single handedly
- 6:08sabotaging, almost seemingly willingly sabotaging his his
- 6:15career, his image. The way baseball fans have
- 6:21perceived him up to this point, it it's he's trashing it and
- 6:25basic, like I said, basically on purpose, I don't.
- 6:28I don't get it. Dude's lost.
- 6:31He's definitely lost. I will get into the comments,
- 6:35'cause you got the clip. But I'm starting to wonder,
- 6:40like, do you, do you think the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,
- 6:49CA, LA, West Coast LA? Yeah, do do you think they even
- 6:55have conversations with these stars before offering them
- 7:01everything? Like any conversations
- 7:05whatsoever, 'cause it's starting to get like a weird trend of, I
- 7:13don't know, man, I get that this is bad luck.
- 7:17I get that. This is.
- 7:18I understand that. I go back and forth.
- 7:21On I'm not giving out this much money if I even have the
- 7:25smallest sense of someone saying they don't really like this
- 7:30game. Yeah, but like you got to you
- 7:34got to go back. Like I and I was thinking about
- 7:37this today as I was kind of prepping my my thoughts and my
- 7:39notes for this episode knowing we're going to talk about this.
- 7:42I, I, I won't say vividly remember, but I, I sort of
- 7:47remember the conversation we had when he signed with the Angels.
- 7:54And it was a conversation that a lot of people are having a
- 7:58question that people are asking about why he would choose to go
- 8:02to LA or Anaheim, Los Angeles, CA, LA, Anaheim, Disneyland.
- 8:09And if you remember, he said something to the effect of I'm a
- 8:15family man. I want to be with my family more
- 8:19and and people are like, well then why would you go there?
- 8:22And I remember it just being really confusing.
- 8:25But even then at the time, I wasn't like writing the guy off.
- 8:29I was like, I mean the decision making seems a little bit fuzzy.
- 8:32I'm not trying to rewrite history.
- 8:33I may have said something completely different, but
- 8:35looking back on it, I'm going even with what we knew to the up
- 8:41to that point, the guy seemed all right.
- 8:44I mean he's he's coming off an an awesome year.
- 8:47They they win the the title in DC I'm like, OK, I'm not going
- 8:52to say he got way too much money because at the time I was like,
- 8:59you know, he deserves A hefty contract.
- 9:01He at the time was like a top at least a top ten third baseman.
- 9:06Yeah. I mean I'm I'm sure he was
- 9:08making our list that we are putting together at that point.
- 9:10Not that ours is you know the Bible by any stretch but not you
- 9:13know we're we're doing a good amount of we're doing a good
- 9:16amount of research and I think we you and I both felt that you
- 9:20know he belonged up there. But I saw I was reading this
- 9:23comment today on one of dozens of posts that that I came across
- 9:29about his comments recently which we'll get into.
- 9:33But it was the I'm paraphrasing, but the the person was
- 9:36essentially asking like, are we going to investigate how Anthony
- 9:41Rendon went from one of the most likable players in baseball when
- 9:46he was with the Nationals to becoming one of the most
- 9:50unlikable now that he's with the Angels?
- 9:52Like what Hap? Like what transpired between
- 9:56shifting coast to coast? Like what happened?
- 10:04I've I don't know. I was going to say something,
- 10:06but I didn't want to be divisive in any way.
- 10:11Let. Me guess it's something about
- 10:13California. Is it something about
- 10:16California? Because I was kind of thinking
- 10:18the same thing. If I'm being honest, I was kind
- 10:20of, that's kind of where my head we're all.
- 10:22Kind of thinking it. I think there's a reason a lot
- 10:24of people are leaving. I think even Californians are
- 10:27thinking it. We won't say it, but they're
- 10:29thinking it. They're thinking.
- 10:31It, yeah. I don't know, dude.
- 10:34Maybe it's when he cut his hair. You know, it's.
- 10:38That's a good point. It's.
- 10:39Probably the pirate look was kind of a move.
- 10:42It was. It was.
- 10:44It's probably a combination of moving to California, having to
- 10:49make a drastic change with your hair, playing like six games
- 10:58since you've been out there, being hurt all the time, losing
- 11:01Shohei to the team that you play like from the team that you play
- 11:05for. What?
- 11:06What was something he did something weird last year too,
- 11:09Like the end of the season he had a.
- 11:10Weird. Oh, it was the freaking.
- 11:12It was the the they were trying to the the reporters down the
- 11:16street, I think. He was, oh, he like said he had
- 11:18a broken leg or something, right?
- 11:19They were at well, they were asking him questions about,
- 11:22like, updates. Like, dude, we haven't heard
- 11:24from you in days, like weeks, like, what's the deal?
- 11:28And the angels were wait, was it the?
- 11:31Was it him where they said that he was playing with like a
- 11:35broken leg or? Something that's what I'm.
- 11:38Saying yeah, OK. Or now he said that.
- 11:41I don't think the Angel said that.
- 11:42I think he said it. And then the angels.
- 11:44Oh, that's. Right.
- 11:45And then and then he was like, I don't know why they wouldn't
- 11:48report that, like why my team wouldn't make that public.
- 11:50But yeah, that's kind of deal. OK, OK.
- 11:53Now they're all coming together. The thing that I was thinking
- 11:55of, which I think was related to that, was when they were trying
- 11:58to get an update from him and he hit the reporters with the the,
- 12:02the infamous no Obla Inglis. And I'm like, dude, that's what
- 12:07that was. Come on.
- 12:09What are we doing? Man.
- 12:12What are we doing? So bringing it full circle here,
- 12:15all of all of this leading up to this week or this weekend.
- 12:20I don't exactly know when the when the story or the interview
- 12:23broke. It was from a segment from the
- 12:26Jack Evita Show. I want to make sure I give
- 12:28proper credit there, but he Jack was asking him well, actually,
- 12:35no, I think. I think the audio includes the
- 12:37the full thing here. So I'll do let me just see if I
- 12:39can play it here. If you could change one thing
- 12:41about Major League Baseball, if I gave you that power, what
- 12:44would you do? I'm going to say something very
- 12:49light. Hearted.
- 12:50So I don't get in trouble. When I get yes, so I'm going.
- 12:54To give you all the Anthony Rendon answer.
- 12:58The first of the day, hopefully. Yeah, we got to shorten the
- 13:02season, man. It's too many Dang games, 162
- 13:05games and 185 three days, whatever it is.
- 13:10Man, no, we got to shorten this bad boy up.
- 13:14Let's go, my brother. You're four years into a
- 13:21seven-year, $245 million contract and you've played 200
- 13:27games. What do you even know about the
- 13:30length of a full season? How?
- 13:32How can you, how are you jockeying for a shorter season
- 13:36when you haven't seen a full season?
- 13:38I mean, what in your entire career?
- 13:41You've enjoyed, you've enjoyed not having to deal with the full
- 13:45season, so why are you complaining about it?
- 13:47Also? What?
- 13:48Like it's what's one thing you would change?
- 13:54That's what comes to mind. That's what I'm saying the first
- 13:57time, the first time I heard that I go you knowing your back,
- 14:01your back story here, knowing all of the things you and I just
- 14:05talked about that have led up to this interview that you're
- 14:08you're currently involved in Anthony Rendon, of all the
- 14:12things you could have said. That's what.
- 14:13You go with. I mean I get it you you don't
- 14:17want to you don't want to say something about the commissioner
- 14:19necessarily because you're. I mean, yeah, you're kind of
- 14:22that guy but you're not like you're not like a Trevor May
- 14:26where you're just going to call like it is a guy like that or or
- 14:29anything you're also. Not don't say you're light
- 14:32hearted about it either. Yeah, don't try to like, don't
- 14:36try to cushion the blow here, Anthony.
- 14:38Light hearted is like when we say like we should have Home Run
- 14:41Derby with tennis balls in in you know the Big Mac bat.
- 14:46Like that's that's light hearted.
- 14:49Don't say it's like this is a legitimate.
- 14:52You're obviously complaining about this throughout your
- 14:55career, so don't say it's like, oh, it's a light hearted thing.
- 14:58Like no dude, like we're giving you an option to change one
- 15:02thing and you immediately go there little ween.
- 15:08Guy stinks. Like if you would have said if
- 15:13you would, honestly if he would have prefaced it with, I'm going
- 15:17to say something light hearted and said just about anything
- 15:21else, I'd have been like OK ha ha.
- 15:23But knowing the knowing the back history there, knowing the fact
- 15:26that he just has all but made it clear that he hates baseball and
- 15:31that he's just trying to collect a check, which is another thing.
- 15:36Like you say you want a shorter season, but you don't have any
- 15:39problem keeping the taking the check.
- 15:42Like, I don't see any discussion about prorating your your check
- 15:48because again, we're four years into it and you've played 200
- 15:53games. Yeah, he did actually have a
- 15:56pretty healthy stretch from 16 to 19.
- 16:00Yeah. And then what was it, what was
- 16:02it from 2020 on? I mean you had the 60 game
- 16:05season 2020, you had 52 games in 202058 games in 202147 games in
- 16:122022 and 43 games in 2023. So as bad as that stretch has
- 16:18been, you're actually coming off of the shortest season that
- 16:21you've played since 2020. Like if you if it was trending
- 16:26upwards I'd be like OK like haha.
- 16:28Like, yeah, I mean, still lacks complete self-awareness, but
- 16:33like, I guess I could take it a little light hearted, but you
- 16:36literally of those force to. In fact, of every season you've
- 16:40played in your career the fewest games you've ever played, You
- 16:44played more games in a 60 game season than you did last year.
- 16:47So probably not the best time to be dropping this, especially
- 16:52considering your team just lost Shohei and we all know the
- 16:56Angels are in shambles right now.
- 16:57Yeah. And like, I, I don't know, dude.
- 17:00I'm. I'm just of the mindset, like
- 17:03there's there's kids like underneath you in the farm.
- 17:08That would kill for an opportunity not to have your
- 17:11paycheck, but just to have like written into the starting lineup
- 17:15regularly when healthy, like an opportunity to go play the full
- 17:21season. It's so out of touch.
- 17:26It's like, yeah, this was a mistake.
- 17:31This was a big of all the mistakes you've made.
- 17:34Of all the stupid comments you've made over the last few
- 17:36years, this one ranks up there for sure.
- 17:42I mean, I got to give it to the people that were calling them
- 17:44out after that incident with the fan in Oakland.
- 17:48They're like, this is who this guy is and I'm like, I I.
- 17:50Don't, I really don't think. So I know, but now it it makes
- 17:55you wonder. Like the thing I'm not hear me
- 17:59out. I'm not justifying berating
- 18:02players from the stands. Like I don't care how much you
- 18:05pay for your ticket. Like it doesn't give you the
- 18:07right to just say whatever you want to these guys.
- 18:09I firmly believe that and we'll forever believe that.
- 18:12I don't care if you if the price of your ticket hit 4 digits.
- 18:15I don't care. Doesn't doesn't justify that.
- 18:18But it makes you wonder if there's some validity to the
- 18:21things that not all, but some of the fans did that for and let
- 18:26them hear it. Did he know?
- 18:28Maybe he knew something we didn't.
- 18:31What was the so the the Carabas tweet in response to this,
- 18:37Nobody hates baseball more than one of the game's highest paid
- 18:40players. Who gets paid not to play?
- 18:45And then you're like, I don't know, Carabas is basically a
- 18:50super fan, but he's made his way into locker room, so maybe he
- 18:54knows a little bit and then bang, confirmed by your by your
- 19:00boy. And then you had, you had
- 19:06Papelbon in response to that, he said.
- 19:11I can definitely confirm Carrabba's here, played with
- 19:13Rendon and literally hates baseball.
- 19:15Yeah, it's long. Isn't that what you signed up
- 19:18for? Just tell the team you want to
- 19:20play half the season and give back half your salary.
- 19:25That's kind of what I'm saying. I'm sorry dude.
- 19:28The 2nd. It's confirmed from a former
- 19:31teammate. It's like I as polarizing as I
- 19:37think Papa Bond could be. Yeah, because we've seen his
- 19:41front ends with teammates. But still, this.
- 19:46I don't know. I think he kind of hits home.
- 19:52I like just. I just like live reaction to
- 19:56what I'm seeing as I search Anthony Rendon.
- 19:58Shout out Addison Yankee World Big big big fan of that account.
- 20:04A quote tweeted at a post that said fan grass is projecting
- 20:08Anthony Rendon to play 133 games in 2024.
- 20:12And Addison says Anthony Rendon doesn't even think Anthony
- 20:14Rendon is going to play that many games.
- 20:20Oh my gosh. And and hear hear me.
- 20:24Listeners, when I say this, I I understand that this is like
- 20:27something a little trivial to be spending this amount of time on,
- 20:32but you have to recognize that like.
- 20:34Time of year, baby. The stove is so cold right now.
- 20:40It was it was 13° this morning when I walked outside to walk
- 20:44the dog, and the hot stove is colder than that, so.
- 20:49Until this gets released, Until you're.
- 20:53Until you're hearing this then. You'll drop it and then Matt
- 20:57Chapman. Jordan Montgomery Blake.
- 21:02Montgomery will have have signed, Blake Sell have signed.
- 21:05The White Sox will have switched their philosophy.
- 21:08They say actually we're going to trade Dylan Cease in a
- 21:10blockbuster. That's what's going to happen
- 21:13after we drop, because it always does.
- 21:16But yeah, it's still like it just was a one off thing, kind
- 21:21of kind of closing the book here on this.
- 21:23If this was a one off comment, yeah, maybe we should have spent
- 21:27as much time as we did on it. But because this seems to be a
- 21:32building narrative, it's it's a narrative that already exists
- 21:35with this guy. Like we're not, we're not just
- 21:37pulling this out of thin air. This has existed with this guy
- 21:40and this only adds to it. It really begs the question, is
- 21:45this story and possibly maybe some things that happened
- 21:50between now and who knows opening day maybe.
- 21:53Maybe Rendon gets caught up in in some more hot water.
- 21:57Is it? Are we going to see a rather
- 22:03significant notification hit the hit the phone sometime between
- 22:08now and opening day about the Angels have decided to cut ties
- 22:12with Anthony Rendon. They say we're going to cut our
- 22:14losses and move on. Are they going to try to offload
- 22:19this guy in some sort of package deal?
- 22:22I don't know. I I that's certainly a stretch.
- 22:25I'm not saying that they are, but like he's not.
- 22:28He is not helping his case, especially going into a year
- 22:32where the Angels are going to need everything they can from
- 22:36this guy, considering who they just lost.
- 22:40So I don't know, man. I'm I'm done.
- 22:44With this, I'm all done. I'm all done.
- 22:46I I can't do it with Rendon anymore.
- 22:47I I've come to his defense like I said, but I I just can't do it
- 22:51anymore. He's all done.
- 22:53He's dug his own grave and he clearly just doesn't want to be
- 22:57out there anymore and he's OK cashing his check Loser.
- 23:03That's where it is. Speaking of cashing a check Josh
- 23:08Hater five year, $95 million deal with the Houston Astros.
- 23:14You texted me the I roll emoji three as the news dropped.
- 23:18Three of them. Three of them.
- 23:23And my response to you more or less was I'm OK with it.
- 23:28Like I I I can't explain why necessarily, but there's just
- 23:36something about, there's something about the Astros
- 23:43beefing up a little bit to kind of to push the knife in a little
- 23:51deeper again, just to say, hey, we're not quite done yet.
- 23:56We're still sticking around. And you're enjoying that?
- 24:01Into the sides of the fans who just hate the Astros.
- 24:03Yeah, Because, look, regardless how you feel about the Astros,
- 24:07regardless how I feel about the Astros, the Astros being at the
- 24:14top of their game, at the top of people's minds, for better, for
- 24:19worse, is good for baseball. You could say that about the
- 24:22Yankees. You could say that about any of
- 24:24the any of the other, like, major markets.
- 24:27Houston obviously doesn't necessarily fit into that same
- 24:31mold as the Yankees or the the Mets or whatever but or the
- 24:35Dodgers even. But I I like the move one
- 24:40because it it even more so shores up that that back end.
- 24:44I mean that the I've seen all sorts of posts talking about the
- 24:47game being O like the game's over after the six eight which I
- 24:51to to that point I'm like let's hold our horses like this is
- 24:55going to become instant it's going to become instant meme
- 24:59material if if they start off the gate start out of the gate
- 25:02little little slow little sluggish in that back end as
- 25:05they're as they find their footing.
- 25:07Yeah so let's let's not say that their back end is going to carry
- 25:11them to a World Series just yet. But all I have to say, I think
- 25:15this is, I think it's a good move.
- 25:17I I like that the Astros aren't just rolling over to this
- 25:21narrative that's floating around out there about a window
- 25:23closing, because I know I've contributed to that.
- 25:26I'm like, how much longer are they going to ride this out,
- 25:29especially with the Rangers doing what they just did.
- 25:31So I don't know. I kind of like it.
- 25:35I mean my couple of things to know.
- 25:37Number one, I didn't realize he was only 29.
- 25:40I don't know why he broke in the league in 2017.
- 25:45I didn't realize he was with the Astros organization, like in the
- 25:49minors. Weird.
- 25:51All of this is weird. Crazy.
- 25:53Yeah, only 29. I feel like this is for what
- 25:57you're getting. I don't think it's that bad of a
- 26:00price tag. I mean, what is that 19 a year?
- 26:07Yeah, yeah. And some change. 19 a year, I
- 26:11mean that's no, no. Yeah, 19 flat.
- 26:13Yep. I don't think that's that bad.
- 26:14None of it's deferred, which is interesting.
- 26:17So like it, it makes you wonder, like, how they proceed moving
- 26:20forward. You know what I mean?
- 26:23Like, I think Bregman's in a walk year.
- 26:29I don't know if Altuve is in a walk year, but you're starting
- 26:32to get to that point where, like, we talked about the
- 26:34window. Yeah, talked about the window.
- 26:36Like it. You're gonna have to start
- 26:39making decisions and there's dudes that have to get paid.
- 26:46They're both in a walk or chance.
- 26:48Yeah, yeah. So I don't know man, that just
- 26:51tells you that's like that's 19 less than than what you can put
- 26:55towards. I think you got to kind of make
- 26:56a choice. I bet they only choose one of
- 26:58them if one of them. Well, they paid Alvarez.
- 27:03What did they what did they pay him again?
- 27:05What was that contract 115, six 115?
- 27:08I don't think Kyle Tucker's gotten paid yet, right?
- 27:10No, I think he's in. He's got to be in close.
- 27:15He's he's very close. Maybe two years of control left.
- 27:24Yeah, 2026 will be a. Free agent, Yeah.
- 27:28So I mean it. Do you want to wait until 2027
- 27:31where you get a bid with everyone else or do you try to
- 27:33offer an early extension? A lot of these come into play.
- 27:36So like this is kind of the, I know you keep saying like, is
- 27:39the window closing? It is.
- 27:41Let's be real. It is closing.
- 27:43Your core is starting to dissolve.
- 27:45Verlander is one year older. So, like, I don't hate the move.
- 27:51I just, I'm. I just felt like I liked him
- 27:56elsewhere. I don't know.
- 27:58I was with the, I think I was with the whole majority of
- 28:02baseball fans seeing him in in in a Rangers uniform.
- 28:06But I don't know. It's just me last year.
- 28:08Pretty good though. 61 games, 56 in the third innings, only eight
- 28:14earn runs, 85 punches, 30 walks. So even when we talk to like
- 28:20talk about how certain closers can kind of have that lull at
- 28:24some point in the season, a little bit of a yippee week or
- 28:28two. Still really good career. 225
- 28:32OURA 11/7 WAR. He's got 165 saves already.
- 28:39So dude is dude, it's good. Yeah.
- 28:45I I don't, I'm not ready to like, say the bullpen is
- 28:48unbeatable. I mean, I remember when these
- 28:50conversations were had when the White Sox added Craig Kimbrough
- 28:53and we talked about Liam and and Kimbrough being in the back end
- 28:57there. Obviously that didn't work.
- 29:01I was curious to see like, so I did a little digging and if like
- 29:04Ryan Presley was down and he's pretty old, I didn't realize
- 29:08Ryan Presley's like 30, 3536, like he's up there.
- 29:13He's showing some Gray. Yeah, but he said it's all good.
- 29:17Him and the GM had a conversation.
- 29:19I read an article saying like the GM was basically, you know,
- 29:23wanted to make sure he was cool with it before moving forward
- 29:26just cause of what he's done in Houston and like what he's put
- 29:29in. And Ryan Press is like, dude, do
- 29:32what you need to do. We got to win.
- 29:33So like, I'll I'll accept whatever role.
- 29:35So it seems like he's willingly stepping into that 888 spot.
- 29:40But here's the thing, dude, is that, like, closers are
- 29:43different. Closers are not the same.
- 29:46So, like, you don't be willing. You can be willing.
- 29:51You can be a team guy. But when that gear gets shifted
- 29:57down a little bit and you don't have the intensity, you don't
- 30:01have the adrenaline flowing through the same way in the 8th
- 30:07inning versus the 9th, It's like what, you know, we've seen Ryan
- 30:11Presley be beatable. We've seen him make mistakes,
- 30:13we've seen him go cold. And that's in a closer role
- 30:17where you have to be somewhat of a perfectionist.
- 30:20Some, I would say there are more closers that don't do well in
- 30:24the 8th inning than there are that do.
- 30:29Riddle me that, you know what I'm saying.
- 30:31It makes sense. Yeah, like, it brings up a good
- 30:35point. Like how much value and Astros
- 30:39fans will certainly be able to speak to this better 'cause they
- 30:41watch him every what, third night or whatever.
- 30:45But like, how much value are you really going to be getting out
- 30:48of Presley in the 8th inning? Like, I I just, that's what I
- 30:55say. I don't know if I buy that from
- 30:56Presley or really any closer at that point because they are
- 30:59different. They have a different mentality.
- 31:02And for you, for the front office, to sit down with him and
- 31:07ask him like, hey, are you OK relinquishing your 9th inning
- 31:11duties for this other guy that we perceived to be of much
- 31:17greater value than you? I don't know of many people that
- 31:21are confidently and transparently being like, yeah,
- 31:26yeah, skip whatever, whatever you need.
- 31:28Yeah, because it's it's the mentality of doing like doing
- 31:38whatever it takes to get the win in the 9th.
- 31:42It's that mentality that got you there.
- 31:44So to just throw that to the wind and say you know what, I
- 31:47don't I don't really need it anymore.
- 31:49Like I'll I'll do whatever the team needs me to do.
- 31:52I I just it that doesn't that doesn't translate with me like.
- 31:57I think it's kind of. It's like almost like a like a
- 32:01shortstop losing the shortstop position after a long time.
- 32:06Yeah, like slide them over to 2nd.
- 32:07Yeah, like that's a confidence position.
- 32:10That's like a I'm the guy position, so it'll be
- 32:14interesting. But I I was looking into stuff,
- 32:17so just looking at like their current depth chart slot hater
- 32:22in the ninth, Presley in the 8th and then Montero and and Abreu
- 32:286-7 rotate those guys. And I was looking in.
- 32:31I was like, I'm curious to see because everyone's saying like
- 32:35it's lights out from here on out.
- 32:36So I wanted to see like well, how lights out were they before
- 32:40hater last year, the 356 ERA which was 18th.
- 32:52Who are we talking about here? The Astros. 71 home runs
- 32:56allowed, which is 20th. 225 walks, Which was 20th.
- 33:00First their pen. This is their pen gave up 22
- 33:05earned runs in last year's post season so it's like I like
- 33:11Hater. Obviously he's the leading the
- 33:16the free agency pool. As far as relievers go,
- 33:19obviously it's it's a no brainer.
- 33:21But like, I don't. I wouldn't sit here and say that
- 33:26that automatically makes them the best bullpen in baseball.
- 33:31I'm not ready to get on that that boat yet.
- 33:34No, I mean, it goes back to the I I think people have this, this
- 33:38misconception of the value that they're going to get from
- 33:41Presley where it's like, oh, well, Presley is our guy, but
- 33:43now we're going to slide him into the eighth.
- 33:45You're not going to get. That's just the that's the
- 33:47reality of that type of transaction.
- 33:50You're not going to get necessarily the same value from
- 33:53a guy like Ryan Presley in the 8th as you would have gotten in
- 33:55the 9th. But in turn like talk about the
- 33:58value of OK haters pitch three days in a row.
- 34:00We still need a close Presley can step into that potentially.
- 34:04So like that is nice. But guys like that aren't like
- 34:08they're not. They haven't flip-flopped their
- 34:11whole career between 8th and 9th and gone on and off between
- 34:14saving games and not so it's like I.
- 34:18Well, to the question mark, they they are better suited than I
- 34:21think a lot of other teams would be to to maybe if they needed
- 34:26for like a two weeks stretch to go closer by committee,
- 34:28especially with the bat, with the history, the track record
- 34:32that hater has of maybe needing his team to go closer by
- 34:35committee while he figures it out.
- 34:37Yeah, at times, not not necessarily all the time.
- 34:39Just the every. I think every close there is a
- 34:41week or two. Yeah, sure.
- 34:42But you you look at a guy like Brian Brayu, he's I even picked
- 34:46him up in fantasy last year because he slotted in.
- 34:48He's nuts. He slotted in as their closer
- 34:51when they needed him to. To don't get me wrong a little
- 34:53bit. He's good.
- 34:54Montero did not look good last year.
- 34:58I looked Brayu individually. Rafael Montero is like a 5 ERA.
- 35:03Well, Brayu had a 175 over 72 appearances, had five saves.
- 35:09So I mean, like I said, they're, I think they're better suited
- 35:13than some other teams, but. I do concur.
- 35:17I do concur and excuse me, add to the value of having a brand
- 35:23new manager in Joe Espada and like having.
- 35:29I think it just checking that box of like a no brainer.
- 35:33I can call this guy on every night in the 9th inning.
- 35:38Like, that's huge. That's huge for a new manager to
- 35:41be able to have. So don't overlook the value of
- 35:43that. I'm just not ready to sit here
- 35:46and say it's automatically the best bullpen in baseball.
- 35:51No, but along those lines, I'm glad that they're still that.
- 35:55There are still teams out there that value our traditional
- 35:58closer. Me too, and not a closer by
- 36:00committee, me too situation. Because go ahead and try to
- 36:06convince us all you want that it somehow works and that the the
- 36:10analytics prove it. Look at the best relief pit
- 36:15closures, to be specific. Look at the best situations that
- 36:20teams have had in terms of confidence going into the 9th
- 36:24inning. It's when they had one guy.
- 36:26There was one guy that was assigned to that inning when it
- 36:29was. Yeah, he.
- 36:31Yeah. Mariano right there right on the
- 36:32back wall. One of the the best ever do it
- 36:36do you think do you think if the Yankees had a closer by
- 36:40committee all those years, they're going, yeah, we feel we
- 36:43we like our chances in the night.
- 36:45No. When he takes the bump, when
- 36:48Ender Sandman hits, it's game over.
- 36:52So don't try to tell me that like we got some guys that
- 36:55they're high velocity guys. They hit their spots and they're
- 36:58swinging. Miss guys, I don't care.
- 37:00Give me one guy, queue up the queue up the the walk out.
- 37:06One guy that just. Sent him out.
- 37:07There, you know what his heartbeat is in that moment.
- 37:12And you can have a committee of guys saying they're willing to
- 37:14do it, but you don't know their heartbeat.
- 37:21I'm all. Smart move, though.
- 37:23Smart move? Speaking of closers, Aroldis
- 37:28Chapman. Whoa.
- 37:32Breaking news just. Agrees with Brendon that the
- 37:35season needs to be shortened. Rodas Chapman, signed moments
- 37:42ago, signed a one year $10.5 million contract with the
- 37:47Pittsburgh Pirates. It's an overpaid, but if you
- 37:51flip them for prospects, genius. If he tanks, because that guy is
- 37:59the ultimate, I need mental, I need adrenaline.
- 38:04I need to get fired up to close the game down.
- 38:07You're going to have inconsistent save opportunities
- 38:10in Pittsburgh with not too many people firing you up in the in
- 38:17the stadium. So I I think, I think Eralda
- 38:22Chapman is all done. I'm, I'm going to go out there
- 38:24and say that now. I think the the story of Eralda
- 38:27Chapman is just all done. How old is he?
- 38:33Old enough? Old enough.
- 38:36I'd give him 32. 35 dude. Whoa, OK, hold on.
- 38:42You were writing him off at 32. You were.
- 38:44I was 32 and you said he. I think we're all done here.
- 38:47I've seen what I needed to see. Correct.
- 38:50Wow. Even 35, even more so.
- 38:53This is all done. We're all done.
- 38:57Relax, dude. I'm not right.
- 38:59Me, of all people. I'm not writing all the world as
- 39:03Chapman. Watch them on a regular basis.
- 39:05I'm telling you it's it's all done.
- 39:08He's all done. I mean I saw my I watch my fair
- 39:12share of of Chapman being in the in the division like I had.
- 39:16I I caught my fair share. I I have a decent understanding
- 39:19of what inconsistency he provides you at times but I I
- 39:23also know that like he he still got a little bit left in the
- 39:27tank. I think we can.
- 39:28I think we can acknowledge that. And I think the Pirates, that's
- 39:31the entire reason they made this move, because.
- 39:34I don't think it's the tank that's the issue.
- 39:37It's this that's the issue. It's the noggin.
- 39:40That guy has an ego bigger than his biceps, I'm telling you
- 39:44right now. I get it.
- 39:47It just doesn't work. You can't drive your weird
- 39:50Hummer tank into Pittsburgh the same way that you've seen when
- 39:56he drives right that thing. Oh yeah, that's.
- 39:58It has like 6 wheels. Tank, I was trying.
- 40:07I was trying to. You mentioned the ego I was
- 40:09trying to find there. There it is.
- 40:15It. It was a tweet he put out July
- 40:196. I I'll never forget this.
- 40:20I love this so much and anytime it comes up, I'm going to
- 40:23reference it. But it was a tweet from July
- 40:256th. I guess he was with the yeah, he
- 40:28was with the Yankees. At this point he's he must have
- 40:31had like a bad stretch. But he said for all those people
- 40:35that criticize my bad moments, I will tell them that I do not
- 40:38know how. I will tell them that I do not
- 40:40know how my story ends. But in its pages, you will never
- 40:44read a quote. I gave up so I will move on.
- 40:47I still have many wars to win and Minnie Mouse to shut up.
- 40:50This was in 2021 and this guy shout out Jake Weist quote
- 40:55tweets and said dog we're not asking you to storm Normandy.
- 40:58We just need free apples and it just makes me think.
- 41:03And like I know we just got done talking about like the mentality
- 41:06closures and I know they're a different breed but I I gotta
- 41:10agree with you on that he his head goes to some strange
- 41:14places. Yeah, but yeah, I, as I'll say
- 41:21it, I think that's the entire reason the Pirates are doing it.
- 41:23They're they recognize that even with the additions they've made.
- 41:28And I'm not, I'm not going to write off the Pirates
- 41:29necessarily. I think they'll give us another
- 41:31interesting run, sort of like they did this year or this this
- 41:34past season, which I completely forgot that they added Martin
- 41:41Perez, Marco Gonzalez, which I think are intriguing additions.
- 41:45It's yeah, it's formidable and it's competitive and like that I
- 41:49have to give them credit for like you're going to compete,
- 41:53you're not going to lay down the way you have been.
- 41:54So, like, I applaud them for that.
- 41:58Yeah. But yeah, I assuming they end up
- 42:03in the same situation as they do last year where they get to the
- 42:06deadline and they're looking up from the bottom of the division
- 42:09or at whatever point that happened, I think it had to have
- 42:12been close to the deadline, right, if not much earlier.
- 42:15I think it didn't clear. Yeah, it didn't.
- 42:17Last very long? No.
- 42:19But they're gonna get to deadline and if he's thrown
- 42:21well, which they can only hope is the case, they're gonna flip
- 42:24him for. The.
- 42:26Names to add to the it's. Smart.
- 42:28It's like it's the number of you buy enough lottery tickets,
- 42:31right? Like if you have enough of these
- 42:33veterans that you can flip and they turn into a high a AA, you
- 42:38know, 7th or 8th prospect in someone's organization, like
- 42:45someone's going to, they're going to strike gold with
- 42:47somebody eventually. So keep doing what you're doing.
- 42:51But like, yeah, we got to start building around that core that
- 42:56you're you're starting it. Like O'Neill Cruz deserves some
- 43:01support, you know what I mean? Cabrin Hayes deserves some.
- 43:04Support. My mom's out of family.
- 43:08A lot of them are Pirates fans because they're up in like
- 43:11southwest Pennsylvania. So they're they're big Pirates
- 43:14fans up there. And every time I talk to my
- 43:17uncle about it, he is always like, it's a great point, but
- 43:21he's always like as good as the players that we have in our
- 43:25minor league system, as as good as they are, it doesn't matter
- 43:28because we're literally the farm system for all of Major League
- 43:31Baseball because we don't pay anybody.
- 43:33So it's like if you're able to assuming they they flip him for
- 43:38some minor league guys that I I doubt they would flip them for
- 43:42or they would flip a guy like Chapman for Major League ready
- 43:44players because why bother at that point If you're flipping
- 43:47them in the 1st place, assuming you get some names in there and
- 43:50they do blossom into something special, you got to change your
- 43:55philosophy as an organization and pay the guys.
- 43:57Like, it doesn't matter if you you cash out on some of these
- 44:00lottery tickets, like you got to pay the guys.
- 44:02Yup, Yup, Yup. All that to say, Earl Chapman to
- 44:08the Pirates, we want to run through this Hall of Fame ballot
- 44:15real quick. The results are dropping
- 44:18Tuesday, so chances are the day that you're listening to this is
- 44:23the same day that the 2024 Hall of Fame ballot will be
- 44:27announced. We don't necessarily need to do
- 44:30like a deep dive or or anything because I'm sure we'll get our
- 44:34fair take of that as the the results become official.
- 44:37And we have been for some time now.
- 44:38Like this is the time of year where you you see names like you
- 44:44know, Manny Ramirez, Gary Sheffield.
- 44:47These names circulate every time around this year or every every
- 44:52point of the year that we're in now.
- 44:54Every time that happens, we regurgitate the same
- 44:58conversations. Yeah.
- 45:01You see some percentages bump up, you see some percentages
- 45:05fall, but we talked about it nonetheless because this is the
- 45:08part of the year where you don't really have much to talk about.
- 45:11So we're sick and ahead. Like I said, we don't need to do
- 45:15necessarily need to do a deep dive, but if you had a ballot
- 45:21and they I know you don't. Well, I mean unless you want to
- 45:23pull one up, I know it's you probably don't have one pulled
- 45:26up. But if you'd like to pull up the
- 45:282024 ballot, I was curious as to your gut take on who you're
- 45:35putting in. Gut reaction.
- 45:37Just read through the names I'll I'll give it quick.
- 45:39Yes or no? If you had a vote, Bobby Abreu.
- 45:43No. First time on the ballot, Jose
- 45:48Bautista. No.
- 45:50Remember, you get 10 votes. Sure.
- 45:52Do you need all 10? Carlos Beltran.
- 45:56No. Adrian Beltre.
- 45:59Yes. Mark Burley.
- 46:02No. Bartolo Cologne.
- 46:05No Adrian Gonzalez. No.
- 46:15Todd Hilton. Yes.
- 46:18Matt Holiday, First time on the ballot?
- 46:22No. For the record, first time on
- 46:25the ballot for Adrian Beltre, Bartolo Cologne, Adrian
- 46:27Gonzalez. I miss those, Tory Hunter.
- 46:31Yes. Andrew Jones, Yes.
- 46:35Good. First time on about Victor
- 46:37Martinez? No first time on a ballot.
- 46:42Joe Mauer. Yes.
- 46:45First time on a ballot Brandon Phillips No Love You B Phil.
- 46:49But no, Manny Ramirez admitted to BED use for for those that
- 47:03care are. You going to say no just because
- 47:08of that, But like numbers wise, of course, just legacy.
- 47:16And like in my mind I'm like thinking of like were you the
- 47:21most feared player at your position for a substantial
- 47:24amount of your career? Of course he was.
- 47:28It's just it's so hard to say yes with that because I don't
- 47:32feel like opening up that can of worms.
- 47:34So I'll say no. With the PED stuff, yeah, yeah,
- 47:38I mean that's a he'll all die on like regard.
- 47:41People can say what the what they want about the PE DS but to
- 47:44me and inherit bias there. Being.
- 47:48With with the socks, for the era that he was, but in my mind, one
- 47:53of the greatest right-handed hitters of our generation.
- 47:56Yeah, yeah. Take the PE DS out of it.
- 47:59The guy's a. He's a pure.
- 48:00Hitter dude. The dude literally, like,
- 48:06literally played mind games with pitchers and, like, baited them
- 48:09into pitching certain throwing certain pitches in certain
- 48:14moments of certain games, and taking advantage of it.
- 48:17And would. Swing intentionally be.
- 48:19Looking like an idiot in certain situations to get that pitch
- 48:23later. Absurd.
- 48:25Absurd. Just insane for some on the
- 48:29belt, Jose Reyes. No.
- 48:33Alex Rodriguez. No.
- 48:37Francisco. Rodriguez same same pretty much
- 48:40copy and paste what you said about Manny.
- 48:42Sure, Sure. Francisco Rodriguez.
- 48:48Also PED user. Yeah, did he get popped?
- 48:52I felt like he went through some suspensions.
- 49:04What did he he. Did he?
- 49:05No. Was it steroids?
- 49:08Yeah, possibly, Yeah. P or maybe not.
- 49:12I don't know if it's steroids, but P DS I believe.
- 49:15Gut reaction? No.
- 49:17Right. It's been a minute since we had
- 49:19to talk about him. Cool glasses, though.
- 49:24For sure, Jimmy Rollins. Oh no.
- 49:36The very good haul, though. Sure.
- 49:41Last year on the ballot. Gary, Sheffield.
- 49:47He didn't get in trouble, did he?
- 49:50Yeah. He did, yeah, he admitted to it.
- 49:54It's so hard to keep. Track now.
- 49:55What year was it? He said.
- 50:03He claimed he wasn't aware of the cream he used contains
- 50:05steroids, but he did. He did acknowledge it.
- 50:11No, I'd like to say yes, trust me.
- 50:21Yeah, 2003 got to be coming up at the end of the list here.
- 50:29James Shields first, someone about.
- 50:31No. First, someone about Chase
- 50:33Utley. No.
- 50:34Omar Vasquel oh. Part of me wants to say yes, but
- 50:40you can't be just AI get he's a wizard with the glove.
- 50:48But like you can't just be super one-dimensional.
- 50:52So I'm going to say Billy. Billy Wagner, I'm.
- 50:57Going to say yes, actually. Yep.
- 51:00And David Wright. I'm going to say yes as.
- 51:03Well, close that might. That might be a case where I
- 51:08hold I I I let him ride it out a little bit.
- 51:11I would ride it out, Yeah. I don't think he gets in, but
- 51:15that puts me at 8:00. What?
- 51:18Yeah. Eight guys that are.
- 51:20Yes. You said Carlos Beltran, No, you
- 51:22said no to Carlos Beltran, right?
- 51:24I did. I said no to that.
- 51:26So you got Adrian Beltray, Todd Hilton, yes to Tori Hunter, yes
- 51:31to Andrew Jones, yes to Joe Mauer, I count 6, and Billy
- 51:41Wagner. Oh, no, you said yes to David.
- 51:43David Wright. Todd Hilton too.
- 51:46Did you get Todd Hilton in there?
- 51:47Who am I missing? Adrian Beltrey?
- 51:51Todd Hilton? Tory Hunter?
- 51:54Andrew Jones? Joe Mauer?
- 51:56Oh, I miss Andy Pettit. Damn.
- 52:00No, sorry. Love Andy.
- 52:05Love Andy. That ball right behind me on my
- 52:07shoulder is signed by him. Love Andy.
- 52:10But again, can't admit to that stuff.
- 52:16Can't. Get caught Did you say yes to
- 52:18Jimmy Rollins? I said no to Jimmy Rollins.
- 52:23Billy Wagner. David Wright.
- 52:25Yeah, I count 7. I don't know.
- 52:26No, I. Don't know either.
- 52:28I trust you. Thanks.
- 52:31Yeah, I'm kind of with you. I don't know.
- 52:33I mean I don't know if I'm putting in that many, but your
- 52:36thought process and a lot of that I'm I'm with and it's I'm
- 52:40just glad to see we're at the point now where guys that you
- 52:42and I grew up watching are. Yeah, now we can like give an
- 52:46actual opinion on these names. Yeah yeah like you hear these
- 52:49these writers and stuff talking all the time about like they
- 52:52they were the most feared. Like you were saying like you
- 52:55alluded to the most feared hitter of of his era.
- 52:59Like we can say we can now say that about like guys that we've
- 53:02watched and and can can vouch for to a degree.
- 53:06So I think from here on out this will be these these Hall of Fame
- 53:10cases will be more fun to. Yeah, for sure.
- 53:13To dive into I did have. I didn't know where we were
- 53:18going to be because I thought we might be a little short on
- 53:23content coming into today's interview before or episode
- 53:28before the Chapman stuff dropped and I added a couple things in.
- 53:31So I actually took some DMS from Instagram just as a way to
- 53:37possibly add some content to it, to maybe beef it up a little
- 53:41bit. But we are.
- 53:42Now rapid fire on those. Well now ironically we are short
- 53:46on time so I'm just going to pick one that I that I liked
- 53:51because we still got to get to the Nolan Ryan unbreakable
- 53:53record segment. Shout out Brendan on Instagram
- 54:02asks 3 hitters and pitchers from the past you'd like to see match
- 54:09up against a player from today, right?
- 54:12I I guess he means against players from today.
- 54:20Can I can I can I make a petition to revise the question
- 54:23just to keep it simple? Sure. 3 past pitchers against
- 54:29three current hitters. I feel like I like you can't
- 54:37help but think of a left on left situation.
- 54:41I don't know why it comes to mind but like give me Randy
- 54:44Johnson against Bryce Harper. You know, like I don't.
- 54:49It's That's an insane at bat. And like, yeah, that's nuts.
- 54:58Give me Nolan Ryan against Nolan Arenado.
- 55:02The Nolans? Yeah, give me How about try this
- 55:06one on for size? How about Pedro Prime Pedro
- 55:12versus Jordan Alvarez? I like that.
- 55:14I know it's a right on left but. But I like that.
- 55:18Power change. Yeah, nasty.
- 55:24Arguably the the greatest change up ever.
- 55:27It's it's less about, I mean certainly the talent plays into
- 55:30it there, but it's more about the attitudes going into that AP
- 55:35like give me Pedro at his at his peak and give me your Don when
- 55:40he knows he's the the most dangerous hitter on the plane.
- 55:43Yeah, yeah. I would love that.
- 55:50What's a good ego? It's a crazy ego hitter, like
- 55:55current hitter with a crazy ego. Who would you put up?
- 55:59Who would you put up against Bob Gibson, a guy that literally
- 56:02didn't care about your well-being whatsoever?
- 56:08I have such a soft spot for Bob Gibson.
- 56:10Dude. Guy was a animal, man.
- 56:15Who? Who even had a shot?
- 56:17Again, who today? What do you mean a?
- 56:20Shot against Bob Gibson. I don't know.
- 56:25Let me jog the memory here a little bit.
- 56:27Give me, give me. Like, yeah, like a super
- 56:29emotional, like the the polar opposite.
- 56:32You know what I mean? A pitcher who doesn't care
- 56:36versus just the Super emotional hitter.
- 56:39Yeah, the coldest guy on the mound that you could possibly
- 56:43have. And Bob Gibson.
- 56:47Oh dude, easy answer. Give me Bob Gibson against
- 56:53Ronald Acuna Junior. I like that.
- 56:57That can you. Are you kidding me?
- 57:00Because that I mean, I'm, I'm putting my money on Bob Gibson.
- 57:04I don't care. But Can you imagine if Ronald
- 57:07Acuna was aware of his stature going into an AB and he connects
- 57:12on one. Yeah.
- 57:13And it it goes 445. Nuke.
- 57:19I like that. Was it good?
- 57:21My goodness, it's. A good matchups, yeah.
- 57:27Oh. Man, I want to see that.
- 57:30Give me Bob Gibson, Ronald Kane Junior.
- 57:33All right, That was fun. But about to have a little bit
- 57:39more fun here. Nolan Ryan's unbreakable record
- 57:42of career strikeouts. As I like to do for these
- 57:47segments. Before we get into the actual
- 57:49record, gonna give a little background as to their career
- 57:53accomplishments. No one had enough time for this.
- 57:58We I could. I could talk for hours.
- 58:00Full episode, Yeah. Yeah, like I said you before we
- 58:04got on Dude. The dude is a walking,
- 58:07unbreakable record. For better and for worse, 'cause
- 58:11he he put up some pretty God awful walk numbers too, if
- 58:15we're, if we're being honest, career accomplishments for Nolan
- 58:20Ryan, Hall of Famer, eight time All Star, 1969 World Series
- 58:24champ, two time ERA title winner, he accumulated a WAR of
- 58:2981.3. He was 324 and 292 in his in his
- 58:34career 319 ERA, 5386 innings pitched and the record that
- 58:42alluded to 5714 career strikeouts most all time.
- 58:48Obviously that's why we're talking about it.
- 58:50Also most all time career walks, 2795 and he had a WHIP of 1247.
- 59:00Honestly, one of the most intriguing elements of Nolan
- 59:05Ryan's career to me is the fact that the man pitched in four
- 59:12separate decades. Yeah, yeah, that doesn't even
- 59:17make sense. It does not.
- 59:20Like you can tell me that he pitched for 27 years, but that
- 59:24that math doesn't math it. Does not.
- 59:26How did you're telling me he pitched for for 40 years, 'cause
- 59:31that's basically when you tell me he pitched for four decades.
- 59:34That's what. That's what I'm hearing.
- 59:35I know that. Comes to mind for me, I.
- 59:36Know that doesn't make sense, but that's what I'm hearing.
- 59:39He he may as well have 'cause it.
- 59:41I I feel like it seemed as though he pitched for 40 years,
- 59:43but he pitched for 27 years, averaged 246 strikeouts for 27
- 59:53years, not just like one season. Yeah.
- 59:58Averaged 246 strikeouts for 27 years.
- 1:00:01I think he what was the top year was like 380 something.
- 1:00:05Dude, it was gross. Where was it?
- 1:00:10He posted 383 strikeouts in 1973, which stands as the modern
- 1:00:15era, or, since 1900, stands as a record for that era.
- 1:00:19The very next year he put up 367 KS, which, by the way, is fourth
- 1:00:26highest. Imagine if fantasy baseball was
- 1:00:31as big back then. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:00:34This is the maybe this is the lens that we need to start
- 1:00:38voting for Hall of Farmers for, right?
- 1:00:40Would you pick this guy up in fantasy?
- 1:00:42Baseball Is he your number one overall pick?
- 1:00:45For Nolan Ryan, I'm going to go ahead and say yeah, he's
- 1:00:48probably going in the first round.
- 1:00:51It's absurd, man. It's absurd.
- 1:00:55Do you? I You said you had some some
- 1:00:57Nuggets, but I I've got some as well.
- 1:00:59How do you want to do this? I have non Nolan Nuggets.
- 1:01:01I have other people's Nuggets that bleed into if this is ever
- 1:01:06touchable. So you keep going with your
- 1:01:10Nolan stuff, all right? Getting into the career record
- 1:01:18itself surpass the record on April 27th, 1983 he still had
- 1:01:31similar to Ricky like we talked about last episode with his
- 1:01:35career steals record where he was the he was the record for.
- 1:01:39He's a record holder. For more, For more.
- 1:01:42Time that he played than he than he didn't.
- 1:01:44Yeah, just. Insane.
- 1:01:45That's so weird. April 27th, 1983, Nolan Ryan
- 1:01:49still had ten seasons left when he broke the record.
- 1:01:55He was going to play for another 10 years, which I know sounds
- 1:02:00crazy or it's it would sound crazy if it was a different
- 1:02:04career. But considering he played for 27
- 1:02:06years, it's like, OK, I kind of get it, but impressive
- 1:02:10nonetheless. Let me see past Walter Johnson
- 1:02:17who had 3509 and I I may have I I think I read that it was
- 1:02:22similar to the Pete Rose situation with his hits record
- 1:02:25that there was some confusion or uncertain.
- 1:02:29Of when it happened. As to when it happened, so I I
- 1:02:32actually think that there was a little bit of confusion back and
- 1:02:35forth on that. But as far as we know, Walter
- 1:02:39Johnson at 3509. For his career, Ryan led the
- 1:02:47league in strikeouts 11 times. Red LED his league 11 times, LED
- 1:02:54all of baseball 7 times. He reached the 200 strikeout
- 1:03:00plateau in 15 seasons, two more than any anyone else.
- 1:03:08Randy Johnson ranked second all time behind Nolan Ryan with
- 1:03:114875, and if he would have pitched another four years
- 1:03:18averaging 200 K's, he still would be behind Ryan.
- 1:03:24We mentioned the 383 strikeouts in 1973.
- 1:03:32Oh, these are always my favorite.
- 1:03:33This is this is kind of like the Ricky step that I threw out
- 1:03:37there last time. I like it.
- 1:03:40For a pitcher making their debut to reach Nolan Ryan's total,
- 1:03:44they would have to average just over 9.5 strikeouts while at
- 1:03:50while pitching 30 games a year for 20 years this.
- 1:03:58Will never happen. Like, you see those graphics all
- 1:04:02the time. Like, throughout, throughout the
- 1:04:04course of a regular season, where a pitcher reaches he, He
- 1:04:07notches his 10th strikeout on a given night on a random Tuesday
- 1:04:10in July, and you get the graphic. 10 KS.
- 1:04:13What a dominant night for Nicole.
- 1:04:15Whoever. Average that please. 9 1/2
- 1:04:20strikeouts for 20 years and you can't Anthony Rendon this You
- 1:04:25have to actually play the game. You have to pitch 30 times.
- 1:04:30You have to make thirty starts for 20 years.
- 1:04:37You're not touching that. It'll just never happen.
- 1:04:40And I think my favorite parts of this conversation are, like,
- 1:04:44talking about today's velocity and movement.
- 1:04:48Hello. Nolan did that too, didn't he?
- 1:04:54Wasn't. He clocked to like 98 on his
- 1:04:56very last pitch that he blew his elbow out like.
- 1:05:01The guy the guy literally threw until his arm fell off.
- 1:05:05Yeah, yeah, One of the. Greatest to ever do it, his
- 1:05:09records never being touched. It's never going to be touched.
- 1:05:11You're never going to see pitchers go that long in games
- 1:05:14anymore, because if you look at all those years, the dude threw
- 1:05:17a million innings. 200 innings is like chump change.
- 1:05:27Do you have the nugget about last year?
- 1:05:29No. Well, you bring that, you bring
- 1:05:33up a good point. In 1974, Ryan set his career
- 1:05:37high with 332 2/3 inning. Pitched.
- 1:05:42In 2023, Logan Webb LED all of baseball with 216 innings
- 1:05:48pitched. Yeah, it's never going to
- 1:05:51happen. We talk about we, we praise guys
- 1:05:53for getting 200 innings four or five times in a career.
- 1:05:57So they're never, it's never going to be longevity.
- 1:06:00You're never gonna make 30 starts just year over year.
- 1:06:04It's never gonna happen. It's never gonna happen.
- 1:06:11I did more of like today's game with this just to, you know,
- 1:06:15obviously people aren't really, like looking up these numbers as
- 1:06:19they're listening to this. So we're talking just current
- 1:06:21guys, current active leaders, Max Scherzer, who's currently
- 1:06:2811th all time Verlander right behind him at 12th.
- 1:06:32Granke is in 20th all time, Kershaw 21st guys who are right
- 1:06:40there, Wainwright, who just retired, so I crossed him off
- 1:06:45Chris Sale and Gary Cole. But I'm looking at this list and
- 1:06:50I'm like, who, who's on track to kind of get close?
- 1:06:58And I wanted to look at like younger names because even like
- 1:07:01Garrett Cole on this list, who's 3132, he's not sniffing anywhere
- 1:07:07near, you know what I mean? He may be lucky to get in Top
- 1:07:1010. So I was like we need a name 30.
- 1:07:133. 33 We need a name who's just really young and like putting up
- 1:07:22impressive numbers. So I decided Spencer Strider,
- 1:07:29he's 24 years old, just finished his second year in the league.
- 1:07:35I do not count his rookie year. I think he only threw like two
- 1:07:37or three innings his rookie year, so I don't think that even
- 1:07:40counts. And technically he didn't even
- 1:07:42have a strikeout in those few innings, so we're good.
- 1:07:47He is currently 483 career strikeouts in his two years, so
- 1:07:52that's averaging 241.5 a year. If he was to do that for 15
- 1:08:01years, averaging 241 1/2 strikeouts a year put some a
- 1:08:09little over. 3600 strikeouts was just good enough for 7th all
- 1:08:13time. This just puts this in
- 1:08:18perspective. Even though we're in a strikeout
- 1:08:24era, a home runner bust era, you still need to have longevity.
- 1:08:35You still need to show up every day, every year for 20 plus
- 1:08:40years, which doesn't happen anymore.
- 1:08:42Guys don't have 20 year careers anymore.
- 1:08:46This record's not going anywhere.
- 1:08:48Nolan Ryan was 46 years old when his arm inevitably fell off.
- 1:08:56Spencer Strider's not throwing until he's. 22 more years?
- 1:08:59No. Nope.
- 1:09:01Because yeah, you had me there for a minute.
- 1:09:04And trust me, I'm not. I'm not thinking like, oh wait,
- 1:09:06hold on, Spencer Strider's going to break.
- 1:09:08He's going to be the guy to do it.
- 1:09:09I wasn't thinking that, but I was like, OK, this is a like a
- 1:09:12compelling case for a guy who's, you know, going to hopefully for
- 1:09:18him maybe one day be in the conversation of top 10,
- 1:09:21whatever. And I say that because I was
- 1:09:25looking at when Nolan's career finally got really going because
- 1:09:31although he made his debut for the Mets in 66 at age 19, he
- 1:09:37only he only threw 3 innings and then 67.
- 1:09:42He had the arm injury. So he he missed the whole year.
- 1:09:45So he didn't really make like his true.
- 1:09:48He didn't really arrive on scene until 68, when he was 21.
- 1:09:52And Spencer Strider, 24. Well, broke in at 22 so.
- 1:09:59Yeah, broke in at 22. But like you said that that 2021
- 1:10:03year he threw to two and a third.
- 1:10:06So you're looking at 2022. He was 23 years old.
- 1:10:09So I mean, kind of, it's not as jarring as if Nolan would have
- 1:10:16stayed healthy at age 19. So I mean you're you're really
- 1:10:19starting his clock at 21. But yeah, but that's The thing
- 1:10:22is that like you stay on this pace for 15 years and you're
- 1:10:25still 2100 strike out short, so. That's just silly, man.
- 1:10:36Come on. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:40Every time, every time Nolan Ryan gets brought up, whether
- 1:10:44it's like a post I see or something like this where we do
- 1:10:46like a little bit of a deep dive, I immediately go shopping
- 1:10:51for like, merch. I'm like, all right.
- 1:10:53Let me ask you this dude. And like, we don't need to spend
- 1:10:56too much time on this. But sure is he overlooked when,
- 1:11:00when everybody talks about their Mount Rushmore baseball, is he
- 1:11:07just forgotten about? Like, I like I have so and I've
- 1:11:11already shared them, but I just love recycling them on Facebook.
- 1:11:16There's so many mind blowing. Just like Nuggets about this
- 1:11:22guy's career. Like, we all know.
- 1:11:25In fact, I put out the 1:00 today just to show you how
- 1:11:29dominant this guy was and people people all the time want to
- 1:11:32throw out like the well, the he he had the most walks.
- 1:11:36Yeah. He threw for like 80 years.
- 1:11:38Like, yeah, you're going to you're going to accumulate some
- 1:11:40walks. I, I, I that's understandable.
- 1:11:44The one put out tonight. You've heard about Nolan Ryan's
- 1:11:49seven no hitters. But did you know the eight time
- 1:11:52All Star had five no hitters broken up in the 9th inning?
- 1:11:57The guy almost had 12 no hitters.
- 1:12:02So yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say he's a little
- 1:12:04overlooked. And the fact that he didn't have
- 1:12:07a single Cy Young, that's that's a.
- 1:12:08Lot. Stupid.
- 1:12:09Stupid. Like, I get it if if you have to
- 1:12:14do a a breakdown of just how like, detailed his numbers
- 1:12:20compared to whoever won it in a given year.
- 1:12:22But like at a certain point when he's been in the league for 8
- 1:12:25decades, you think, OK, this guy's been dominant for long
- 1:12:31enough of a stretch, give him the knot.
- 1:12:33Yeah, just just slide him one. Just give him the edge.
- 1:12:36There's a little bit. It's too bad.
- 1:12:39Let's not make this like a posthumous thing where like he
- 1:12:42he passes away and then we're like, well we're going to give
- 1:12:45him a bonus Cy Young Award for the fill in the blank season
- 1:12:51because of how, like let let's, let's, let's give no.
- 1:12:57Minus flowers. Let's give him his flowers while
- 1:13:00we still can. We we need to stop under rating
- 1:13:04this man because the guy was you want to talk about most feared
- 1:13:08of a of an era try like a multiple eras.
- 1:13:12The guy he struck out players who then went on to have sons
- 1:13:17who he then struck out like multiple.
- 1:13:19Not just like it happened multiple times.
- 1:13:25So go ahead and take that like most feared in a generation
- 1:13:28thing and times it by like two or three and then you have Nolan
- 1:13:32Ryan. That's so good.
- 1:13:33That's where we're at. Anyway, all right, that's that's
- 1:13:37enough on that. Anything else you wanted to add
- 1:13:41before we get out of here? No, that's all I got, baby.
- 1:13:45Yeah. That was fun.
- 1:13:50Good stuff. What a no.
- 1:13:54I'll save it. I'll tease a little bit.
- 1:13:56Yeah, I was going to say I'd, I'd rather we'll just keep close
- 1:13:59to the vest. I'll figure it out.
- 1:14:01Yeah, we have plenty. I don't think we're going to run
- 1:14:05low anytime soon. No.
- 1:14:07I don't think so. Don't think so.
- 1:14:13Yes, we've got Rendon, Hater, Chapman, Hall of Fame Nolan
- 1:14:19Ryan. Good stuff.
- 1:14:21In the books 409 Good. Meat and potatoes type stuff, no
- 1:14:27fluff. No fluff, appreciate y'all

- 1:14:52It just gets embarrassing at that.
- 1:14:53Point Well, it's it's stressful, man.
- 1:14:55I don't want to have to be watching the clock in December.
- 1:14:59Reaching out to people you don't know, putting out Flyers on
