- 0:47It's awesome animal stories. And today we are back in the
- 0:51book of Canadian folklore written down by Cyrus McMillan.
- 0:57In today's story, we're going to learn about the fall of Spider
- 1:00Man, who used to live up in the stars.
- 1:04OK, let's begin the fall of Spider Man.
- 1:11In the olden times, Spider Man lived in the sky country.
- 1:15He dwelt in a bright little house all by himself, where he
- 1:18wove webs and long flimsy ladders for people to go back
- 1:21and forth between the sky and the earth.
- 1:24The star people often went to earth at night, where they
- 1:27roamed around as light fairies, doing good deeds for women and
- 1:30children, and they always use Spider Man's ladder.
- 1:35Spider Man had to work very hard weaving his webs and spending
- 1:39the yarn for his ladders. One day taking a break from his
- 1:43work, he looked down at the earth and he saw many of the
- 1:46Earth people playing games and taking sweet syrup from the
- 1:49Maple trees or gathering berries on the rolling hills.
- 1:55But most of the men were lazy and idle and did nothing.
- 1:59The women were all working in the fashion of the Indians of
- 2:02those days. The men worked but barely and
- 2:10Spider man said to himself, I would like to go to the earth
- 2:13country where men waste their time away.
- 2:16I would marry 4 wives who would work for me while I kick back
- 2:19for I need a rest. He was very tired from his work
- 2:25because he kept at it day and night, always spinning and
- 2:28weaving his webs. But when he asked for a rest he
- 2:32was not allowed to stop. He was only kicked for his pains
- 2:35and called sleepyhead and lazy bones and other harsh names and
- 2:39told to work harder. Then he grew angry and resolved
- 2:43to punish the star people because they never gave him a
- 2:46break. He thought that if he had
- 2:49punished them and annoyed them, they would get rid of him.
- 2:53So he came up with just the plan.
- 2:56Each night when the Star Fairy was climbing back up to the sky
- 2:59country, just as he came near the top of the ladder, the
- 3:03Spider Man would cut the strands and the fairy would fall to the
- 3:06earth with a great crash. Night after night he did this,
- 3:11and he chuckled to himself as he saw the sky fairies tumbling
- 3:14through the air and kicking their feet while the Earth
- 3:17people looked up at them and called them shooting stars.
- 3:22Many star people fell to the Earth in this way because of
- 3:25Spider Man's tricks, and they could never go back to the Sky
- 3:27Country because of their broken limbs or the disfigured faces.
- 3:32For in the Sky Country, the people must all have perfect
- 3:34faces and forms. But Spider Man's tricks did him
- 3:39no good. The people would not drive him
- 3:41away because they needed his webs and he was kept busy.
- 3:45At last he decided to run away on his own, and one night when
- 3:49the moon and the stars had gone to work and the sun was still
- 3:52asleep, he said farewell to the sky country and let himself down
- 3:55to earth by one of his own strands of yarn, spinning it as
- 3:59he dropped down in the earth country.
- 4:03He married 4 wives as he had planned for.
- 4:05He wanted them to work for him while he rested.
- 4:08He thought he had worked long enough.
- 4:12All went well for a time and the lazy spider man was quite happy
- 4:16living his lazy and contented life.
- 4:19He didn't spin a strand nor weave a web.
- 4:23No men on earth were working, only the women toiled.
- 4:28At last Gluskap, who ruled the earth back then, became very
- 4:32angry because the men in these parts were so lazy, and he sent
- 4:35Famine into their country to punish them for their sins.
- 4:40Famine stealthily crept into the land, and he gathered up all the
- 4:43corn and it carried it off. Then he called all the animals
- 4:47and the birds and the fish of the sea in the river, and he
- 4:50took them away with him. There was nothing left to eat in
- 4:54all the land, only the water remained.
- 4:57The people were very hungry and lived on water for many days.
- 5:02Sometimes they drank the water cold, sometimes hot, sometimes
- 5:06lukewarm, but at best it was just water.
- 5:11The Spider Man soon grew tired of this strange diet.
- 5:14Water cooled his hunger, but it just wasn't the same.
- 5:17It filled his belly and swelled him to a great size, but it
- 5:21brought him little nourishment or strength.
- 5:23So he said there must be good food somewhere in the world.
- 5:27I will find it. That night, when all the world
- 5:31was asleep, he took a large bag and softly crept away from his
- 5:34wives and set out on his quest for food.
- 5:38He did not want anyone to know where he was going.
- 5:41For several days he travelled, living only on water, but he
- 5:44found no food and the bag on his back was still empty.
- 5:49At last, one day he saw birds in the trees and knew that he was
- 5:52near the border of Hungerland. That night in the forest, when
- 5:57he stopped to have streamed a drink, he saw a tiny light
- 6:00peeking out through the trees. He hurried towards the light and
- 6:05soon he came upon a man with a great hump on his shoulders and
- 6:07scars on his face. He had a light hanging on his
- 6:10back with a shade on it that it could close and open.
- 6:14Spider man said I'm looking for food, tell me where to find it.
- 6:20The Lantern man said, Do you want it for your people?
- 6:24Spider man said no, I want it for myself.
- 6:28Then the Lantern Man laughed and said, You are near the land of
- 6:31plenty, follow me and I will give you food.
- 6:36Then he flashed the light on his back, opening and closing the
- 6:38shade so that the light flickered, and he set off
- 6:40quickly through the trees. Spider Man followed the flashing
- 6:46light in the dark, but he had to go so fast that he was almost
- 6:49out of breath when he reached the house where the Lantern man
- 6:52had stopped. But he only laughed when he saw
- 6:55Spider Man coming, puffing wearily along with his fat and
- 6:58swollen belly. He gave him a good meal and the
- 7:02spider man felt better after his long fast.
- 7:04Then the Lantern man said, you are Spider Man who once weaved
- 7:08webs in the sky. I too once dwelt in the Star
- 7:11country and one night as I was climbing back from the earth
- 7:15country on your ladder carrying my lamp on my back to light the
- 7:18way, when I was near the sky, you cut the strands of the web
- 7:21and I fell to the earth with a great crash.
- 7:25That is why I have a great hump on my back and scars on my face.
- 7:29And because of this, I've never been allowed to go back to the
- 7:32sky country of the stars. I roam the earth at night as a
- 7:36forest fairy, just as I did in the olden days, for I have my
- 7:39former powers still with me, and I still carry my lamp on my
- 7:42back. It is the Starlight from the sky
- 7:44country. I shall never get back to the
- 7:47star country while I have life, but someday, when my work on
- 7:51Earth is done, I shall go back. But although you were cruel to
- 7:55me, I will give you food. Spider Man remembered the nights
- 8:00he cut the ladders, and he laughed to himself at the memory
- 8:03of the star fairies falling to earth with a great crash.
- 8:08But the man with the light knew that now he had his chance to
- 8:11take vengeance on the Spider Man.
- 8:14The latter did not expect evil. He was glad to get food at last.
- 8:18Then the Lantern man said, I will give you 4 pots.
- 8:23You must not open them until you get home.
- 8:25They will be filled with food, and thereafter when you open
- 8:28them, they will always be packed with food, and the food will
- 8:32never run out. Spider Man put the four pots in
- 8:36his bag, and slinging them over his shoulder, he set out for
- 8:39home. After he had left, the Lantern
- 8:42Man used his power to make him hungry.
- 8:45Yet for several days he travelled without opening the
- 8:47pots, for although he was almost starving, he wished to do as the
- 8:51Lantern Man had told him. At last he couldn't wait any
- 8:55longer. He stopped near his home, took
- 8:58the pots out of his bag, and he opened them.
- 9:01They were filled with good food, as he had been promised.
- 9:04In one was a fine meat Stew, in another there were many
- 9:07vegetables, in another there was bread made from corn, and in
- 9:10another luscious ripe fruit. He ate until he was full.
- 9:16He covered the pots and putting the bag in his bag, and hid the
- 9:19bag among the trees. Then he went home.
- 9:24He felt bad for his people, and he decided to invite the chief
- 9:27and all the tribe to a feast the next evening, for the pops would
- 9:30be full and the food would never decrease and there would be
- 9:33enough for all. He thought the people would call
- 9:36him a wonderful man because he could supply all of them with
- 9:39good food. When he reached his home his
- 9:43wives were very glad to see him, and they brought him water, the
- 9:47only food they had. But he laughed at them and threw
- 9:51the water in their faces and said, Ho, foolish women, I do
- 9:54not want water. It is not food for a great man
- 9:56like me. I've had a good meal of meat,
- 10:00Stew and cornbread, and cooked vegetables and luscious ripe
- 10:02fruit. I know where food is to be
- 10:04found, but only I know I can find food when all others fail,
- 10:10for I am a great man. Go forth and invite the chief
- 10:14and all the people to a feast which I shall provide for them
- 10:17tomorrow night, a feast for all the land, for my food never
- 10:22grows less. They were all amazed when they
- 10:26heard his story, and the thought of his good meal greatly added
- 10:29to their hunger. But they went out and summoned
- 10:32all the tribe to a feast, as he had told them.
- 10:37The next night all the people gathered for the feast, for the
- 10:40news of it had spread throughout the land.
- 10:43They had taken no water that day, for they wished to eat
- 10:45well, and they were very hungry. They were as hungry as wild
- 10:49beasts in search of food. Spider Man was very glad because
- 10:54the people praised him, and he probably brought out his bag of
- 10:57pots. The people all waited hungrily
- 11:01and eagerly, but when he uncovered the first pot, there
- 11:04was no food there. He uncovered the second pot, but
- 11:08there was no food there. He uncovered all the pots, but
- 11:11not a bit of food was left in any of them.
- 11:14They were all empty, and at the bottom of each was a great
- 11:17gaping hole. Now it happened in this way.
- 11:23When the Lantern Man, the Star Fairy, had given the pots to
- 11:25Spider Man, he knew well that the Spider Man would disobey his
- 11:29orders and that he would open the pots before he reached his
- 11:31home. He chuckled to himself, for he
- 11:35knew now that he could take vengeance on the web Weaver who
- 11:37had injured him. So when the Spider Man had left
- 11:41the pots among the trees, the Lantern man used his magic power
- 11:45and made holes in the pots, and the charm of the food was
- 11:47broken, and all the food disappeared.
- 11:51When the people saw the empty pots, they thought that they had
- 11:54been purposely deceived. The remains of the food and the
- 11:58smell of the Stew and of the fruit still clung to the pots.
- 12:02They thought the Spider Man had eaten all the food himself.
- 12:05So in their great hunger and their rage and their
- 12:07disappointment, they fell upon him and beat him and bore him
- 12:11into the ground, while the Hump Man, with the lamp on his back
- 12:14hiding behind the trees, looked on and laughed in Glee.
- 12:19Then the people split Spider Man's arms to the shoulders and
- 12:22his legs to the thighs, so that he had eight limbs instead of
- 12:25four. And the Lantern Man, the star
- 12:28fairy named Firefly, came forth from behind the trees and stood
- 12:32over the fallen Spider Man. He said, because of your cruelty
- 12:36to the other star people, you will always crawl around on 8
- 12:39legs, and you will have a fat round belly because of the water
- 12:43you drank. And sometimes you will live on
- 12:46top of the water, but you shall always eat only flies and
- 12:50insects, and you will always spin downwards and never
- 12:53upwards. And you will often try to get
- 12:55back into the Star country, but you shall always slip down again
- 12:59on the strand of yarn you have spun.
- 13:01Then Firefly flashed his light and quickly went away, opening
- 13:05and closing the shade on his lamp as he flitted among the
- 13:07trees. And to this day, Spider Man
- 13:11lives as the Lantern Man said, because of the cruelty he
- 13:14practiced on the Star fairies in the olden days.
- 13:18The End. He was put on the shelf.
- 13:26Well, first we all walked out and then we were locked out.
- 13:29And then by a foul, we were all but knocked out.
- 13:32Our union minors face guns in jail.
- 13:35Hundreds of us were held without bail.
- 13:38But by August 1914, our labor they were courting, but they
- 13:41blacklisted me. Well I love the explanation of
- 13:47the spider man and the Firefly. The cruelty of Spider Man was
- 13:50well punished and the four wives thing, it's like, well, I'm just
- 13:55going to get you to work for me. That's not what marriage is.
- 13:59And I'm of course excited about more stories in this book.
- 14:03We got quite a while to go. And the podcast Shout out is to
- 14:07just the Zoo of us. It is hosted by Alan and
- 14:09Christian and they talk about animals and rate them.
- 14:13It is also wholesome as heck. Go and listen to them.
- 14:17And the listener shout out is to Christchurch, New Zealand.
- 14:20Located on the South Island, this city has for years been
- 14:23confused with the actual capital of New Zealand, Wellington.
- 14:27Oh, almost at Auckland there. Oops.
- 14:29Hey, and if I'm lucky enough to visit the country of long white
- 14:32clouds, I would love to see the Marmite factory, although I've
- 14:36heard that it has moved too. But to my listener in
- 14:39Christchurch, I say thank you for surviving Armageddon and
- 14:43good night.
