Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:12the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Happy Monday everyone. I feel like I am literally
- 0:19saying that every second day. Like, I can't believe how fast
- 0:24the weeks are just flying by now that I have such a strong kind
- 0:29of hold, I guess grasp on the podcast schedule, the mini
- 0:32scroll schedule. It is wild.
- 0:35But let's just get into the stories for today.
- 0:38So the first story that I have for you guys.
- 0:41Oh my God, you guys. OK, so Cody Ko made a DJ
- 0:45appearance this weekend amid the Tana Mojo allegations.
- 0:49So Cody Ko has still refused to address the Tana Mojo
- 0:52allegations, and instead he is now, I guess, deejaying his way
- 0:58through it. Over the weekend, Cody made his
- 1:00first public appearance in weeks, playing a DJ set at
- 1:03Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas for a very, very high level
- 1:07recap. I'm sure you guys all know by
- 1:08now, and if you listen to this podcast, you've heard me talk
- 1:11about it many times. But pressure has been mounting
- 1:13on Cody since May 30th, when Tana confirms that she was just
- 1:1717 years old when she slept with Cody, who was allegedly 25 at
- 1:21the time. That wasn't the first time she'd
- 1:23addressed it it. She had spoken about this in
- 1:26different interviews on different podcasts.
- 1:27Like she talked about it here and there over the course of her
- 1:30career since it happened. And other people had also spoken
- 1:33about it, like Gabby Hannah talked about it on a podcast,
- 1:36but people weren't really using names.
- 1:38So yes, this was the first time where it really felt like people
- 1:41believed her. And it's stuck.
- 1:42And if you guys listen to Tana Mojo Part 2, which is coming on
- 1:45Friday, our deep dive into Tana Mojo's career history, her
- 1:49exploitation and now her redemption.
- 1:51We go into a little bit more detail on kind of why now people
- 1:55are like, quote UN quote believing her, which is a
- 1:57problem in and of itself, but it is the reality.
- 2:01So this allegation was covered by kind of smaller creators when
- 2:04it first came out on May 30th, but nobody who was kind of like
- 2:09really big in the commentary space, no mainstream outlets
- 2:12were really touching it yet until DeAngelo Wallace, who is a
- 2:17very highly respected commentary creator, made a bombshell video
- 2:22last week going through all the allegations, all the stuff about
- 2:24Cody brought up, the fact that, like Gabby Hannah had spoken
- 2:27about this on a podcast before, all of that put it all together
- 2:30and their video got, I think it's at like 2.8 million views
- 2:33right now. Like, it just absolutely
- 2:35exploded within the first, like, day.
- 2:37And now everybody has started talking about it.
- 2:40So Brittany Broski, Jarvis, Philip Defranco, like, these
- 2:44huge creators have now spoken out against Cody because I don't
- 2:48know, they kind of have to now. Like, the pressure is on.
- 2:50OK, so Cody did this DJ set looks completely unbothered.
- 2:55He's like having the best time ever.
- 2:56People are chanting his name. And then you guys, he played
- 3:01Sorry by Justin Bieber. If that is not a slap in the
- 3:06face, I do not know what is because everybody right now is
- 3:10waiting for him to address it and presumably say sorry, you
- 3:14know, so he played sorry and there's clips going everywhere
- 3:17of people being like, are you kidding me?
- 3:18His DJ said. I've seen two comparisons.
- 3:20I'm obsessed with both of them. The first comparison that I feel
- 3:24is very accurate is it's being compared to Colleen Ballinger's
- 3:27toxic gossip train. And people are like, why when
- 3:31these Youtubers are getting called out for like being creepy
- 3:33with minors, are they like using music as their outlet to address
- 3:38it? So that's the first comparison,
- 3:40which feels somewhat accurate. And the second one, though, that
- 3:43feels like so, so, so, so on branch, so true.
- 3:46People are comparing Cody Ko to Tom Sandoval.
- 3:49They're like, this is such a Tom Sandoval move.
- 3:51And it couldn't be truer. Like, that's exactly how Tom
- 3:53Sandoval handle handled Scandoval.
- 3:56He really was just like, fuck you guys.
- 3:59I'm going to capitalize on this. I'm going to go on tour with my
- 4:01band. I'm going to see myself as the
- 4:03victim in this situation instead of the perpetrator.
- 4:06I saw that comparison and I was like, yes, as far as we know,
- 4:10maybe it's not true. Maybe he's all torn up about it
- 4:12and he feels so guilty and, you know, but we don't know because
- 4:16he hasn't given us anything except for this DJ set.
- 4:19OK, The next story that I have for you guys is that Chapel
- 4:22Rhone just did an interview and she opened up about how crazy
- 4:26fans make her want to quit music or question if she should keep
- 4:30going. So Chapel Roan appeared on Drew
- 4:33Afuala's podcast, the comments section at the end of last week.
- 4:36First of all, this is such a huge get for Drew.
- 4:40Like this is so sick. Chapel Roan.
- 4:43She could go on any podcast she wants right now.
- 4:45She is like top of her game. Like she is the most famous pop
- 4:49star at the current moment. Maybe like her and Sabrina
- 4:51Carpenter, but like truly, I mean, and also Charlie XX, but
- 4:54you know what I mean? Like she could really like, I'm
- 4:56actually so happy that she went on Drew's podcast.
- 4:58Like it's the perfect fit for her.
- 5:01It shows that, you know, either Chapel or like whoever's around
- 5:04her, like gets the vibe like they're like online, they get
- 5:08the zeitgeist. They know what's going to hit.
- 5:10I'm so glad she didn't do like call her daddy or something that
- 5:13felt a little bit more obvious. It was very exciting to see her
- 5:17on this podcast. So they talked about a lot of
- 5:19things. And when they were talking about
- 5:21fame, one of the funny things that came out, Drew was like,
- 5:25what do you miss the most about life?
- 5:26I guess like pre fame. And she was like doing drugs in
- 5:30public. But yeah, she was just like, I
- 5:33miss frolicking. Like I miss having fun.
- 5:34I miss wearing Forever 21 and not giving a shit.
- 5:36Like I miss just like being able to essentially do whatever you
- 5:40want. One of the most interesting
- 5:42parts of their conversation to me.
- 5:44And like in relation to Centennial world, the infinite
- 5:47scroll universe, all of that was she talked about fan culture.
- 5:52She said, quote, people have started to be freaks.
- 5:54They follow me and know where my parents live and where my sister
- 5:57works, all this weird shit. This is the time when a few
- 6:00years ago when I said that if there were stalker vibes or my
- 6:03family was in danger, I would quit.
- 6:06And we're there. We're there.
- 6:08So allegedly she was talking about an experience that she had
- 6:12with one of her biggest fan accounts at Midwest Princess HQ,
- 6:16which has over 83,000 followers on Instagram and is like
- 6:20dedicated to fan updates and being a fan account of chapels.
- 6:23So this is from a Dazed article they write.
- 6:25Quote. According to other fan pages,
- 6:28one of the account admins, Nova, locked other admins out of the
- 6:32account and began to expose Roan's family's personal
- 6:35information, ultimately ending in Rhone unfollowing the
- 6:39account. We talk so much about Stan
- 6:42culture, toxic fandoms, parasocial relationships.
- 6:47And I think this is really interesting because you don't
- 6:49really hear like really big stars talk about this, You know,
- 6:52until like Gen. Z, really the people who were
- 6:56who were becoming famous, like they weren't necessarily
- 6:58chronically online, You know, even like millennials, I'm a
- 7:01millennial. And like, you know, our stars,
- 7:04it was before like Instagram and Twitter and stuff were really
- 7:07that big. So, you know, you weren't like
- 7:10chronically online and exposed to fandom culture and expected
- 7:14to engage with your stands and your fans in that same way that
- 7:17I think Gen. Z stars and obviously Gen.
- 7:20Alpha and then like generations following are expected now to
- 7:24engage with their fans online. And it's just so it's just so
- 7:28different now. They're exposed to it in such a
- 7:30different way. So it's interesting to hear her
- 7:32talk about this. And I really hope that these
- 7:34crazy stands don't run her out of the industry, don't scare her
- 7:39off because it is scary. And I completely respect that.
- 7:43She's like, I would quit if my family got in danger.
- 7:45Like that's not worth it to me. And I just think like, what do
- 7:49people benefit, especially if you're a fan?
- 7:51What do they benefit from exposing?
- 7:53Like doxing people and exposing personal information about their
- 7:56families if they are a fan especially.
- 7:59It's just it's so toxic. I mean, we've done so many
- 8:03episodes on like toxic fandoms and why fans get really toxic
- 8:07and really possessive. And I assume that's probably
- 8:09part of it. I assume that this fan account
- 8:11has been her fan for a long time.
- 8:13She obviously followed them on Instagram.
- 8:14So you know, they've probably been around for a while.
- 8:16And now that she's getting really big, they probably feel a
- 8:19bit possessive of her and they're lashing out now because
- 8:23of it because she's so popular. I mean, we all see it like I see
- 8:25it on Tiktok, so many clips constantly of people being like,
- 8:29so happy. I was a fan of Chapel Rone from
- 8:31like 2020. Now she's blown up and everybody
- 8:34is like obsessed with her. But I can say that I knew her
- 8:36first. Like everybody is so obsessed
- 8:38with being the one that like found the artist first or
- 8:41discovered. And like it's every generation.
- 8:43It's not like a Gen. Z thing.
- 8:45This happens in every generation.
- 8:46It's like you're not a real fan. But honestly, this is the
- 8:50consequence of that, of that attitude of that mentality is
- 8:54like it puts actually the fan object, the thing that you're
- 8:56obsessed with, it puts them in danger.
- 8:58So like, let's chill, let's pump the brakes, okay?
- 9:03And the last story that I have for you guys is that Emma
- 9:06Chamberlain reportedly has a new boyfriend.
- 9:09I feel like I'm a little bit late to this, but I saw Spill
- 9:11Sash talk about it on TikTok and I was like, okay, I have to talk
- 9:15about that because we have reported on all of Emmas,
- 9:18dating, relationship life over the last couple of years.
- 9:21So Emma has been rumoured to be with someone for a while now,
- 9:24mostly after her ex role model released a song in which he says
- 9:28that he heard she moved on to someone else, someone new.
- 9:32So people were kind of like, OK, she's definitely seeing someone
- 9:35new. What's going on?
- 9:36And now it seems fans are convinced that Emma is dating
- 9:40Peter Mcpoland after the two were spotted together several
- 9:44times in the last couple of weeks.
- 9:47Peter's a singer-songwriter. His song Romeo and Juliet.
- 9:50It was really, really popular a few years ago on TikTok.
- 9:53And you know, he also started following Emma's dad on
- 9:57Instagram. So people are like, OK, duh,
- 10:00this has to be it. But yes, very cute.
- 10:04I mean, she's, she's literally so private now.
- 10:06Like Emma is like truly like a private a list celebrity as
- 10:11opposed to like an influencer that you can even have like a
- 10:13parasocial relationship with because like she is just so
- 10:16she's scaled back so much because she's just so famous.
- 10:20So I don't know if we will ever get like a full confirmation,
- 10:24but I love this for her. She loves that kind of guy.
- 10:28Like she loves like a musician kind of indie.
- 10:32I'm going to get absolutely slammed for saying indie because
- 10:35last time I was talking about role model it was on the podcast
- 10:38with Geordie and like everybody was like, you are such an idiot.
- 10:41Like I can't believe you don't know about role model and like
- 10:44his lore and like his music. But I just I didn't.
- 10:47So people are probably going to be like Peter Mcpull and he's
- 10:50like so famous. He's not indie.
- 10:51I don't know, but to me he's indie.
- 10:53OK, anyways, guys, that's it for Mini scroll today.
- 10:57Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 11:00and subscribe. It means so much.
- 11:02It helps me grow. I love you guys and I will talk
- 11:04to you guys tomorrow. Bye.
