- 0:15We just started. My name is Carlos and what I am going to
- 0:22tell you next is a chapter of my life, which today is still full
- 0:26of unknowns and no matter how hard I try to get answers, I know
- 0:32I will never get them. It was a summer afternoon I was sitting on
- 0:38the sidewalk in front of my house playing with my toy cars, when suddenly,
- 0:43my gaze stopped at the front house. This was a house that had
- 0:48been uninhabited for so long that I barely remembered seeing her ever occupied. What
- 0:55caught my attention that time was that an old truck stopped in front of the
- 1:00house loaded with boxes and furniture, as if someone were moving. Then a
- 1:06man got out of the van. There was nothing particularly disturbing about his physical
- 1:11appearance. He was a middle- aged man, with a careless beard and
- 1:15worn clothes, but there was something in his eyes. It was something in
- 1:19the way he watched me that made me feel very uncomfortable. When our eyes
- 1:26met, the man sketched a smile, but it was not a friendly smile,
- 1:30It was not a smile that seemed to be painted on his forced and
- 1:37artificial face, a smile that did not reach his eyes, which remained cold
- 1:41and unexpressive at that time. I knew I had to get away, I
- 1:47had to run away from that man. Before anything happened quickly, I got
- 1:51up from the sidewalk and ran into my house. I told my mother what
- 1:55I had just witnessed, trying to express to her the restlessness and my inner
- 2:00feeling, but she hardly paid attention to me. She seemed more concerned about
- 2:06the arrival of a new neighbor than, by my words, full of fear.
- 2:10During the first days, my mind made endless theories and scenarios regarding that
- 2:15new neighbor. However, the more time passed, the more my mind set
- 2:21aside. In the end, that new neighbor did not seem to have done
- 2:28anything more extraordinary or anything that attracted both attention and his first appearance. He
- 2:31was rarely seen leaving his home, except for brief moments to acquire basic supplies.
- 2:38Once a week, the nights, however, brought with them something that
- 2:43drew attention, because from time to time strange sounds were heard coming from the
- 2:49house of the newly arrived neighbor, they were indistinguishable sounds, difficult to attribute
- 2:54to a concrete cause, but that generated a chill in the spine of those
- 2:59who listened to them My parents as good neighbors and following a logic of peaceful
- 3:06coexistence, they tended to diminish importance to such events. As long as he
- 3:12doesn' t hurt anyone. We don' t have to bother him They
- 3:17said trying to calm my worries with their adult logic. One night, however,
- 3:21everything changed. I was at home looking for my dog, who on
- 3:25that occasion seemed to have vanished without a trace. I questioned my parents about
- 3:30it, but they made sure they hadn' t seen him in a while.
- 3:35Fearing the worst, I decided to go out and look for him by
- 3:39name, while walking the deserted streets in search of some trace of his presence.
- 3:45That' s when I heard the barking. They were the unmistakable barkings
- 3:49of my dog, but something in them didn' t sound quite right.
- 3:53They were sharp, filled with rage and ferocity that I had never heard before
- 3:58in the voice of my dear companion. The barking seemed to come from the
- 4:01house of the new neighbor, which sowed a seed of fear in me.
- 4:06With my heart, beating hard in my chest, I crossed the street and
- 4:11approached the neighbor' s house, following the sound of barking. When I
- 4:15finally got to the origin, I was petrified. My dog was cornered in
- 4:20the backyard with the new neighbor, imitating his barking in a creepyly accurate way,
- 4:27with his look totally blank and his shape distorted with huge arms. The
- 4:32image was surreal, almost as if it were witnessing a distorted reflection of reality.
- 4:39My dog, realizing my presence, stopped barking and that caused the man
- 4:43to turn his head in my direction. But what happened next was much more
- 4:48strange. Instead of speaking or speaking a word to me, the man began
- 4:54barking at me. His imitation was so perfect, so real that I felt
- 4:58a chill crawling through my waiting and without thinking twice I turned around and ran
- 5:02back to my house with my dog, following me closely. The meeting with
- 5:09the neighbor left me bewildered and disturbed. I wondered what kind of person imitates
- 5:14a dog' s barking like that and what kind of motives might lead him
- 5:18to do something like that. I felt powerless for not being able to understand
- 5:23a little what was happening across my street. For days I avoided going near
- 5:30the neighbor' s house, afraid to meet him again. But the memory
- 5:34of that night, of that disturbing encounter, continued to torment my dreams and
- 5:40my thoughts. Fear had settled into the depths of my being I knew I
- 5:45could not tell my parents what I had witnessed that night. I was sure
- 5:50they wouldn' t believe me or even worse they' d think I'
- 5:55d lost my mind. After all, how could I explain to you that
- 5:59a man in doubt was imitating my dog' s barking in such a disturbing
- 6:03way and in such a terrifying way. The next night he brought with him
- 6:09a new dose of terror while sleeping in my room. On the second floor
- 6:14I was awakened by slight blows to the window. The sound resonated in the
- 6:17insistent and disturbing room. I joined the bed and approached the window with cautious
- 6:24steps. I couldn' t see anyone behind the curtain, but the blows
- 6:30continued as if someone was desperately trying to get my attention from the outside.
- 6:36With trembling hands. I opened the curtain and looked outside hoping to find a
- 6:43logical explanation for that strange event, but there was nothing. The garden was
- 6:48deserted, wrapped in the darkness of the night and no trace of human or
- 6:53animal life that could explain the mysterious knocks on the window. That made no
- 6:59sense and a chill ran through my back as I tried to understand what was
- 7:03happening. Suddenly, something caught my attention in the house across the street.
- 7:10One of the windows on the second floor was open and between the curtains I
- 7:15barely visualized the figure of the man. I was standing there staring at my
- 7:18room, as if that scene wasn' t disturbing enough. I watched the
- 7:24man raise his hand and start giving light blows to his window. However,
- 7:29the sound was present in mine, although I could not see his face clearly,
- 7:34I was sure that he was smiling with that forceful and disturbing smile he
- 7:41had seen on his face. The first time we met was as if I
- 7:45was enjoying my fear, feeding on my anguish as a predator stalking its prey.
- 7:53I stepped back from the window and plunged under the blankets, trying to
- 7:57block the outside world and find shelter in the opening comforting arm of darkness.
- 8:01That night, the dream didn' t come easily. My thoughts were dominated
- 8:07by the image of man in the window, all accompanied by the slight blows
- 8:11on the glass, which I now knew where they came from. On a
- 8:16sunny afternoon, while playing in the backyard of my house I had another disturbing
- 8:20vision of the neighbor, I instinctively looked up at the front house, as
- 8:26if some invisible force was drawing my attention and what I saw left me breathless.
- 8:31The neighbor was standing in his back garden, holding a small metal cage
- 8:37in his hands and inside the cage there was a group of birds frenziedly fluttering
- 8:41in a desperate attempt to escape from his little prison. The scariest thing was
- 8:48that the neighbor, with a chilling calm, lifted the cage over his head
- 8:52and began to swing it from one side to the other, as if he
- 8:58was performing some kind of ritual. The birds did not make sounds of despair
- 9:01and then, in a fast and fluid movement, the neighbor opened the door
- 9:07of the cage and let the birds fly free. Instead of rejoicing over their
- 9:11release, the birds flew in circles around before falling inert on the lawn.
- 9:16When I saw that, I breathed a sigh of amazement. That caught the
- 9:20man’ s attention, turning to see me and spousing that macabre smile before
- 9:26going back into his house. As if nothing had happened at that time in
- 9:31my life, I felt more lonely than I never knew who I turned to
- 9:35or who to tell. I could no longer even leave my home without being
- 9:39stalked by that man, who seemed to enjoy all the fear I felt toward
- 9:45him. However, when I thought it could no longer be worse, I
- 9:48realized that I was very wrong. That day I felt a little sick.
- 9:54My stomach was stirring with discomfort that forced me to stay home. My parents,
- 10:00concerned about my health, decided it would be better if I stayed home
- 10:03instead of going to school. Although his absence left me alone in the house.
- 10:09They trusted my ability to take care of myself. For a few hours
- 10:13while they went to work. While I was alone at home, I tried
- 10:20to distract myself by watching cartoons on television, trying to ignore the uncomfortable sensations
- 10:26that were assaulting me, but then I heard a soft knock on the front
- 10:30door. My parents had taught me that I should never open the door if
- 10:35I was home alone. So I initially decided to ignore the call. However,
- 10:39the beating became more insistent, more urgent, and soon I began to
- 10:46hear my father' s voice knocking on me from the other side of the
- 10:48door. Confused and a little scared, I got up from the couch and
- 10:54walked to the door, struggling with a feeling of restlessness at the bottom of
- 10:58my mind O O O O O O. For a moment I got carried
- 11:01away by the familiarity of my father' s voice, but then something within
- 11:07me rebelled against that complacency. A silent voice inside me warned me that something
- 11:13was not right. Even though I heard my father' s voice clearly calling
- 11:16from the other side of the door, something told me not to open.
- 11:22Just as I was about to give in to the insistent call the phone sounded
- 11:28breaking the momentary spell that kept me trapped at the door threshold with trembling hands.
- 11:33I was running to answer the phone feeling a chill running through my spine
- 11:39while lifting the headset on the other side of the line. My father'
- 11:43s voice was heard and I wondered how I felt. My words stuck in
- 11:48my throat as I struggled to understand what was happening. How could my father
- 11:54be calling me on the phone if he was outside the house, calling me
- 12:00from the front door. While talking to my father on the phone, reality
- 12:05hit me hard, I looked out the window and saw the neighbor, coming
- 12:09out of my garden and across the street to his house. But before entering
- 12:13this one he swerved back posing his gaze fixed on me with an unsettling intensity
- 12:18before beginning to greet me slowly with his hand. There was no doubt that
- 12:24man was playing with me, manipulating my mind and playing with my emotions as
- 12:30if he were a puppet in his hands. Fear took hold of me at
- 12:33that time a visceral sensation that paralyzed me to the core a wave of terror.
- 12:39It flooded me to see that I almost opened the door to someone who
- 12:43sounded like my father, but he was not my father, whose intentions were
- 12:48unknown and dangerous. With my heart beating hard on my chest, I locked
- 12:52myself in my room the rest of the afternoon, until my parents returned from
- 12:56work. With the passing of days, strange and disturbing incidents multiplied as if
- 13:03the neighbor was intensifying his efforts to disturb my quiet life. Many times,
- 13:09just as I decided to go out and get some fresh air, I saw
- 13:15the neighbor also sitting outside his house for the sole purpose of keeping an eye
- 13:20on me. On another occasion, as I walked down the street back home
- 13:26after school, I saw the neighbor standing at his door, watching me with
- 13:31a cold and penetrating look that made me shudder it was as if I could
- 13:37see through my soul, causing my deepest fears to manifest at the same time
- 13:41within me. It all ended one night when my parents went out to a
- 13:46party, leaving me alone at home, despite my desperate pleas to be taken
- 13:52with them or let me go with some family member. I had been imploring
- 13:56that I would not be left alone tormented by the memory of the neighbor and
- 14:01afraid that I might return like that day. However, my parents' response
- 14:05was firm and definitive. They assured me that it would be fine and that
- 14:11it would only be for a few hours, but my mind was full of
- 14:16horrible images and living nightmares that refused to disappear. When I was alone that
- 14:20night, I set out to close all possible tickets. I closed the curtains,
- 14:26secured the doors and finally locked myself in my room, hoping to find
- 14:30some peace in my room, which at that time felt like my only safe
- 14:35place. As the night progressed the tiredness began to weigh on my eyelids and
- 14:41gradually I plunged into a restless sleep full of nightmares. In the middle of
- 14:48the night, a few knocks on the window disturbed my rest again. Those
- 14:52blows were so strong that I felt my window would break, but, to
- 14:56my fortune, that didn' t happen. This time. However, I
- 15:01didn' t have the courage to approach the window and face what I might
- 15:05find on the other side. I was snuggled in my bed, trembling with
- 15:09fear and waiting for the dawn to bring with me the promise of a new
- 15:15day. The time seemed not to go forward and the night was still wrapped
- 15:20in darkness and I was snuggled in my bed trembling with fear. At one
- 15:24point, the beatings stopped and for a moment I thought it was all over.
- 15:30However, fate had other plans for me that night, plans that would
- 15:33take me to the edge of the abyss. Suddenly I heard a constant sound
- 15:39ringing through the walls of the house. My heart stopped for a moment while
- 15:45listening to the blows, wondering who might be playing at those hours of the
- 15:50night. Then a known voice broke the silence, a voice that frozen my
- 15:54blood. It was my mother' s voice, asking me to fit the
- 16:00door. A chill swept through my spine as I got out of bed and
- 16:06headed to the door with my mind filling with a sense of restlessness and danger.
- 16:11But just as I was about to open the door, a fleeting thought
- 16:15pierced my mind. My parents always carried the keys with them and never knocked
- 16:22on the front door. I stopped my hand in the air with a growing
- 16:26sense of terror, seizing on me as the knocks on the door intensified,
- 16:32resounding in the house with an almost supernatural force. The voice he was calling
- 16:37from the other side became different, distorted and sinister, as if possessed by
- 16:42an evil entity that demanded to enter open the door to me. I demanded
- 16:48the voice with a diabolical and threatening tone, echoing in the hallway with an
- 16:52intensity that made me tremble with fear. Fortunately, at that crucial moment,
- 16:59the der fate intervened to save me from an uncertain destiny. My parents returned
- 17:03home and what they told me later disturbed me even more had seen the neighbor
- 17:08standing outside in the dark. His face was illuminated by the headlights of the
- 17:14car, but what they saw left us horrified. His face was deformed with
- 17:19eyes as I had seen them before, and his body deformed in such a
- 17:25way that it looked like a spectrum of another dimension. When discovered, the
- 17:29neighbor ran out in the middle of the night, disappearing into the darkness like
- 17:33a fleeting shadow. Since then, no one has seen him or heard from
- 17:38him again, for he did not even come back for his things. Although
- 17:42I am still tormented by the nightmares and memories of that dark time in my
- 17:48life, I am sure of one thing. What lived in front of my
- 17:51house for so long was not human. As I look back. On that
- 17:56night of terror. I realized that some truths are horrible r to understand and
- 18:00some dark nightmares to forget. A story written and adapted by Aurora. Escalante
