- 1:31At first base, batting seventh, Phil Scaran.
- 1:34Cleve Poyer back in action again at third base, batting eighth.
- 1:38And Whitey Ford, pitching and batting ninth.
- 1:43The umpires, Frank Humont calling balls and strikes.
- 1:47Joe Linsalata at first, Bob Stewart at second.
- 1:50And Charlie Berry over at third.
- 1:54Both pitches have completed warming up.
- 1:57The ground crew has finished moving down the infield.
- 2:01Everything's about ready to go.
- 2:03And just a reminder, do you have plenty of time?
- 2:15Well, let's take a look at the standings.
- 2:17The magic number now for the Yankees is 11.
- 2:20Any combination of Yankee wins or Detroit defeats, that's total 11.
- 2:26And the Yankees are in.
- 2:31New York now 10 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers.
- 2:3613 ahead of Baltimore, 20 ahead of Chicago.
- 2:3926 and a half ahead of the Indians.
- 2:4229 and a half ahead of the Red Sox.
- 2:4535 ahead of the Angels.
- 2:4736 ahead of Minnesota.
- 2:5044 and a half ahead of Kansas City and 45 and a half ahead of Washington.
- 2:58And the Yankees, with 97 wins to their credit right now,
- 3:02have already matched their total number of victories in 1960,
- 3:06when they won 97 and lost 57 and won the American League,
- 3:10painted by eight games.
- 3:13And you can see that, brand of ball, the other teams are playing.
- 3:21So this is a good time for the Yankees to have had that hot streak.
- 3:26They're about ready to go, and they're trying to get somebody to lead them out,
- 3:29but they all go in unison this time.
- 3:47Jimmy Dykes is still talking with Charlie Berry, who will be umpiring at third today.
- 3:52But right now, our national anthem.
- 4:22The Yankees.
- 4:47Well, we're ready now for the start of this ball game,
- 5:06and alongside me the gentleman who's going to take you along the start of the game, Red Barber.
- 5:11Phil, will you explain something to me?
- 5:13Uh-huh.
- 5:14I understand that when Dykes stole Latham, he was going to fix the first game,
- 5:18and then he finally went back in his office.
- 5:20That six of the Cleveland players formed a circle around Latham
- 5:24and started the thing all langs eyes.
- 5:28What's the meaning of that?
- 5:29Well, they figure he's going to join the club today.
- 5:32Or should old acquaintance be forgotten?
- 5:36I imagine that's what it was, because last time Latham pitched against the Yankees,
- 5:40he did very well.
- 5:42Neither Maddell nor Maris got a home run.
- 5:45All players really tease each other.
- 5:47Oh, they sure do.
- 5:48You know, people on the outside might think it's kind of rough to tease a fellow like Latham,
- 5:54who's done a good job, but it's all in fun, and they're actually trying to relax him a little bit.
- 5:59Did the Yankees ever tease you when you were playing?
- 6:01Oh my gosh, yes.
- 6:02Many times.
- 6:03I remember the first time I hit a home run came into the dugout.
- 6:06There was nobody sitting on the bench but Joe McCarthy,
- 6:09I couldn't convince any of the other players that I had hit a home run.
- 6:12They said they were all inside and they didn't believe it.
- 6:15Ha ha ha.
- 6:20Well, at that, I think ballplay is a very practical psychologist.
- 6:28This thing of a sense of humor certainly does break the tension.
- 6:35Now we have Johnny Temple to be first up, Whitey Ford going up to win number 24.
- 6:43Had the big day out here yesterday.
- 6:46He was deep to touch by.
- 6:49Johnny Temple.
- 6:51He's going to have a tough man to pitch to, hitting 280.
- 6:57Slow curve is good for the call strike.
- 7:01Here's Yuma with the duty back of the plate today.
- 7:05Lin Solata down at first.
- 7:09Charlie Berry is at second.
- 7:12Stewart is at third.
- 7:16There's a ball that is hit into right center field and safe for a base knock.
- 7:21Temple makes the turn.
- 7:22He's on.
- 7:23Wait a second.
- 7:24Here's Mantle throw and Temple's in there for a double.
- 7:28He's got a ball in the hole, right center.
- 7:37So that's talked it off.
- 7:38The Indians have lost their last 16 games here at the stadium.
- 7:54There's a ball that's hit into right center field and safe for a base knock.
- 7:59Jimmy Pilsen is hitting for a high average, 326.
- 8:05Takes a curve outside, ball one.
- 8:16First man up has doubled.
- 8:19The start of a first game.
- 8:22Got a tremendous crowd here at the stadium.
- 8:29Full curve is down and foul.
- 8:30That's that third base for the coach, Luke Affling.
- 8:33Dale McGaha coaching over at first.
- 8:37Forbes is starting in the first game daily.
- 8:40We'll start in the second.
- 8:43Latham goes in the first game for Cleveland and Perry will pitch the second one.
- 8:49George catching, John at first.
- 8:52Richardson is at second.
- 8:53Kubeck at short and Boyer after day out with a bad knee as Dr. Sturge.
- 9:00Mighty deal.
- 9:01The curve ball hit down to short.
- 9:02Kubeck up, holds the runner at second, throws over to first and Pilsen is out by wide hodge.
- 9:09Goa have won away and here is Tito Francona hitting 293.
- 9:16Most tips on his ball, 158.
- 9:23The outfield for the Yankees, Blanchett is in left.
- 9:27Maddell in center and Marich who hit 56 yesterday is in right.
- 9:32And when you mention Marich and Maddell, that's one of the reasons why you've got this big crowd.
- 9:38Francona cuts to the sidearm curve, like one.
- 9:50The folks are here.
- 9:52And this crowd today sends the Yankees considerably ahead of their season's home attendance last year.
- 9:59And of course they have the five games remaining the last week of the season.
- 10:03Two with Baltimore, three with Boston.
- 10:11Four deals, a curve low outside.
- 10:14Left-handed pitcher, left-hand hitter.
- 10:16One ball, one strike.
- 10:18We have a light breeze which is blowing out toward left center.
- 10:29Speaking of Marich and Maddell, counting the double-headed today, they have 12 games remaining under the ruling by the commission.
- 10:36The Gulf of Maine's record is 60.
- 10:40What came down with a high inside change of pace that was taking Francona waved at it, it's like two.
- 10:48It was true some time ago, if you're not familiar, that Ruth's record must be done in 154 games,
- 11:00Marquise saying 162 this year.
- 11:02So that was the number of games that Babe played in when he cut it.
- 11:05There's a ground foul outside third, still wanted to.
- 11:12One ball, two strikes.
- 11:30Whitey taking the time from Howard who is using a sequence pattern with a runner at second.
- 11:35You can see his fingers as well as the pitcher.
- 11:40One-two delivery, swung on, there's a five-ball and to the short right, there is Marich coming in, he's under it.
- 11:45He has it.
- 11:47Now we have two down.
- 11:50Ford's float up on it.
- 11:52Francona didn't hit it squarely.
- 11:56We heard a plunk.
- 11:58Now we have John Romano, the catcher, hitting a 297.
- 12:03And Ford, of course, will be very careful with him.
- 12:06Runner at second base, two out.
- 12:11Romano got hit on the left foot yesterday, foul ball.
- 12:18You have no score.
- 12:24This is a big crowd, but you don't hear it in the microphone.
- 12:28But you wait until the Yankees come to bat in the last of the first inning and the M boys swing into sight.
- 12:34And your ears will tell you something.
- 12:37Good.
- 12:39A flatter, good for a called strike just above the maze on the inside.
- 12:48Romano steps back out.
- 12:50I don't think he appreciated the call too much.
- 12:53He's just in the humon a little bit.
- 12:55Not for long, he's in there again.
- 13:02This is a ball.
- 13:08There was a curve breaking low inside.
- 13:10Romano started the swing and checked his swing.
- 13:13And if he started the swing, Humon started with his right hand and then that's about to check his swing in time, he brought the right hand down again.
- 13:26One ball, one strike.
- 13:28That's a rough job calling balls and strikes back of the play.
- 13:32There's a line drive that is hit into left center for a base talk.
- 13:35Here's a couple of rounds third.
- 13:36Blanket's going to the plate, but not in time.
- 13:39Boy, a touch to cut it off.
- 13:41The ball kicked away.
- 13:42Howard receives it.
- 13:43Romano saves it first and it is one to nothing for Cleveland.
- 13:46A line single and a long one to left center field.
- 13:50Blanket had no chance.
- 13:52No chance to stop the ride.
- 13:56So, they have one in for the Vistas.
- 14:04You heard a bit of a mama reaction from the crowd then.
- 14:101-1-2 hits for Cleveland and here's Kirkland.
- 14:13He hit a home run out here yesterday for Cleveland.
- 14:17Will is adding 2.58.
- 14:20Left hand hitter.
- 14:23Takes a strike over the inside.
- 14:26Hand high.
- 14:28Kirkland gets his forward foot, his left one, just about as close to the plate as he can,
- 14:34and then points his forward foot to the second base.
- 14:39So, it's a crowding open stance.
- 14:42There's a ball bouncing away from Howard and Romano looks on down to second base.
- 14:46The pitch was low and it caused a wild pitch on Whitey.
- 14:49So, he is behind the run and now with a wild pitch he has a runner at second base
- 14:56at the pickup point at home.
- 15:04One ball, one strike.
- 15:13The guys are all clear.
- 15:14It's just a little haze, but it's basically a blue and white pattern.
- 15:191-1 delivery.
- 15:21Low outside, a curve.
- 15:22Ball two.
- 15:23Howard having a good answer left.
- 15:27Sound of a plane passing by.
- 15:37Well, nothing Cleveland.
- 15:38Here's the start of the big day.
- 15:43Pitch, swung on the ground ball, hit, foul outside first base.
- 15:51That's two and two.
- 16:01You might say in essence that Kirkland is what the Indians have for Colavito.
- 16:08They traded Colavito for Keane and a year later traded Keane to San Francisco for Kirkland and Antonelli.
- 16:15And then they showed Antonelli who couldn't win for them.
- 16:20No walking.
- 16:23Two-two pitch, swung on late as a foul in the lower left field stand.
- 16:29Two and two.
- 16:36Two balls, two strikes.
- 16:51Two-two delivery again, high outside, ball three.
- 17:06Whitey slowed down the speed of the pitch.
- 17:12Two-two delivery, swung on, there is a looper in the short set of field.
- 17:22It's dropping for a base hit.
- 17:23Romano's coming in with a second run.
- 17:24And they just throw the ball to second base.
- 17:25Kirkland looped it for a single and it is too nothing in favor of Cleveland.
- 17:28And so the Wilds hit first second run as it now stands.
- 17:43Down here is Vic Colav hitting 263.
- 17:58And a severe crowd, right-hand batter, swing down and hits it in the right field stand foul.
- 18:08We have a tremendous battery of photographers.
- 18:13Everything that that marriage does will be photographed.
- 18:25Pitch low inside, flatter, one and one.
- 18:31Ball and the strikes.
- 18:35Kirkland's been using breaking stuff.
- 18:38I haven't seen him play fastball.
- 18:43Kirkland off first.
- 18:44And Ford moves over there and Kirkland steps back.
- 18:51Too nothing in favor of the Indians.
- 18:58And a foul ball in the right field stands again.
- 19:05He reached for a change of speed low outside hit.
- 19:08One and two.
- 19:19Ford in position to check the run at first pitchers.
- 19:23Another foul result in the first base stand.
- 19:27They're getting power outside and Vic is reaching for them and following them into the right field stand.
- 19:49Pitchers, a curve ball which is hit out into left field.
- 19:52Short left has Lantz coming on.
- 19:54He's trying to get there.
- 19:57And here's Kirkland coming to third base and they stop him.
- 19:59And power comes in to second with a double.
- 20:02It was a fly ball, not deep, that landed about 10 feet fair inside the left field line.
- 20:08The outfield had been pushed back toward right.
- 20:12And Blankett had no chance.
- 20:14The ball dropped when he was still three feet, three running steps away.
- 20:19Kirkland is held by Appley at third.
- 20:26Four hits for Cleveland.
- 20:29Now I have Woody held.
- 20:31He had a home run out here yesterday, batting 265.
- 20:38The Yankee bullpen begins stirring.
- 20:43Change of pace, there's a tie outside, ball one.
- 21:00Here's the change, swing on it, doesn't get it.
- 21:14One and one.
- 21:24And there's a high flatter into the hand for a 12-second strike.
- 21:31One ball, two strikes.
- 21:33First base is open, run of the second and third.
- 21:41Whitey deals low inside, ball two.
- 21:45Now that is the hardest that he's thrown a ball.
- 21:47Phil, Whitey seems to be struggling.
- 21:49I haven't seen him so hard.
- 21:51No, I haven't either. Maybe he was unloading all those gifts he got yesterday.
- 21:54Red might have tied him out.
- 21:58All right, two and two.
- 22:03The ball is hit out and the set of metal comes on and makes the one-handed tap.
- 22:09It's a soft play to get out of the inning.
- 22:25Well, that's an ovation for Maddow Katz.
- 22:27He caught it right off the grass, coming in at a tough speed on the score end of half an inning.
- 22:31Cleveland, too, and the act is now to hit.
- 22:40Atlantic Imperial, the quality gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive,
- 22:46is now backed by the clean carburetor test.
- 22:50We're so sure you'll agree that Atlantic Imperial gasoline improves your car's performance,
- 22:55but we're inviting you to prove it without risking an extra penny.
- 22:59Here's how Atlantic clean carburetor tests work.
- 23:03Use 100 gallons of Atlantic Imperial and ask for a receipt with each purchase.
- 23:08If you're not completely satisfied that Atlantic Imperial gives you smoother idling,
- 23:13less stalling, and generally improves your car's performance, just mail the receipt to Atlantic.
- 23:19We'll pay the difference between the cost of 100 gallons of Atlantic Imperial and regular gasoline,
- 23:26and that's all there is to it.
- 23:28You'll like the difference Atlantic Imperial makes, or we'll pay the difference.
- 23:33Start using Atlantic Imperial soon.
- 23:52And now, in the last of the first inning, House had Coates and Cleminger warming up in the Yankee Boat End.
- 24:02Whitey was struggling there in the first inning, and it took her stellar catch by Maddow to get the third out.
- 24:11All right, we have Bobby Richardson first up, 2-0 Cleveland.
- 24:20Bobby hitting 2-69.
- 24:23Lepman curbs him low outside, ball one.
- 24:28Lepman has run 12, lost four.
- 24:30He has beaten the Yankees once this year.
- 24:33That would have to be at Cleveland.
- 24:36The Indians haven't won a ball game at the stadium this year,
- 24:38and the Boats of March have lost the right 16, they say here.
- 24:44This is low, ball two.
- 24:52All right, two balls, no strikes.
- 24:57Lepman, strong right-hander, delivers.
- 25:01Good first strike just above the knees.
- 25:04Romano is catching him.
- 25:06Power is at first base.
- 25:08Temple at second.
- 25:10The first half is held, and the third baseman is Mike De La Hose.
- 25:14Low outside, ball three.
- 25:17De La Hose playing, plays for Phillips, who got hit on the left hand early in the Friday night game.
- 25:30And so on left, De La Hose in center, Kirkland in right.
- 25:35Low delivery, low, ball four, and the ball is on.
- 25:43Now, cool back steps in, hitting at 276.
- 25:50It's the birthday boy, Roger Marich.
- 25:5327 today, moving out now onto the on-deck tackle.
- 26:06Tony, break for left-hand batter.
- 26:08Infield double play death.
- 26:10Lepman buzzes the inside under the hands for a called strike.
- 26:21Lepman first came up with a white star.
- 26:27There's a curve ball, down to down to second.
- 26:29Temple up, but it goes back to second short to get one and throw the first double play.
- 26:34Boy, that's held.
- 26:36It was moving down that second base.
- 26:38You have to make it.
- 26:40Now, do you hear the crowd? There's Marich, who's in the batter's box.
- 27:06Pitches inside, ball one.
- 27:15Marich hitting 271.
- 27:18It's a long foul in the upper right field stand.
- 27:24And of course, the minute he swung and the ball took off,
- 27:28fans didn't like to see the ooh nod.
- 27:34He's a big attraction.
- 27:39Like one ball, one strike.
- 27:45That's it, well around flood right.
- 27:48Lepman pitches high outside, dismissive ball, too.
- 27:53Three infielders on the right side.
- 28:00Marich is the most pronounced right field hitter, full hitter, that we have in the league.
- 28:08Two-one delivery.
- 28:10There's a high, high ball into right center field, not too deep,
- 28:13second under it, right fielder takes.
- 28:17Well, that's the third out.
- 28:21And thanks to the double play following the walk,
- 28:23there was nothing across after the first inning.
- 28:26So the score at the end of the first is Cleveland 2 and New York nothing.
- 28:32Other games, the Tigers, who got out of their losing flunk yesterday at Boston,
- 28:40failed to score their first bad bat up at Boston, single game.
- 28:44Masi for Detroit and Conley for Boston.
- 28:47Masi recently has lost, I think out of his last five decisions,
- 28:53he has lost three one-to-nothing ball games.
- 28:58Now that is really calculated to sweeten his spirits.
- 29:02Washington at Baltimore, no score in the half an inning.
- 29:06McLean versus Estrada.
- 29:09Chicago will come in later from Los Angeles.
- 29:12The doubleheader Minnesota at Kansas City, which will start later.
- 29:17In the National League, we have Philadelphia, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee.
- 29:22St. Louis at Cincinnati, Los Angeles at San Francisco, and they are all coming later.
- 29:27The lead in the National League is now three.
- 29:30Cincinnati winning in 12 innings yesterday, and San Francisco dumping the Los Angeles again.
- 29:37The lead in the American League is ten.
- 29:41Now we have Mike Delahause hitting 270.
- 29:47Swings it forward, slow curve, and fouls it.
- 29:52Third base coach DeCruz, it throws it out.
- 30:02It's a stadium for the Yankees until they are back Tuesday night, September 26,
- 30:07with Baltimore in the falling Wednesday afternoon.
- 30:10The red structure is Friday night, September 29, Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
- 30:20For Deals and the Pitchers, high outside for ball two, two and one.
- 30:27Two balls, one strike.
- 30:38Whitey works, and there's a ground foul outside of third.
- 30:43Ball bounced up into the stands by the scramble.
- 30:51Two and two.
- 30:54That's the count. This is the start of inning two.
- 30:57First of two, and slavery lead two, nothing.
- 31:01Whitey delivers, and as the ball hit out the right center, Mal is going over.
- 31:04Mal is there.
- 31:11And the pitcher, Lampman, is getting ready now to come out of the dugout.
- 31:16The White Sox thirded him to Cleveland, you will recall, for a hard score.
- 31:24He's a little bit more up in the coast league, San Diego, trying to regain some measure of control.
- 31:39He has never been able to get straightened out since he was stuck by Mike Dibble's line drive.
- 31:50Four hits for 49 at bat.
- 32:03Right hand hitter.
- 32:05Forge, slow curve, picks up the outside for a ball strike.
- 32:16Left hand there works, curve ball is in there again, strike two, right over.
- 32:21Tuck the heart of it.
- 32:29Fitches, there's a fast ball on the outside, ball one.
- 32:39Whitey standing out in the front.
- 32:43Fives a great deal, loses considerable weight when he pitches.
- 32:46There's a foul tipped.
- 32:51He was swinging on a sinker.
- 32:55And Lampman, he thought of twisting his right arm as though he pulled something back behind the shoulder blade.
- 33:02Now he moves in.
- 33:090-1 and 2, board works, strikes three called.
- 33:14He gets the flatter on the outside.
- 33:16Lampman walks away.
- 33:19Whitey's first crack out today.
- 33:31The margin of Sasquatch at 185 each.
- 33:45Now we have Temple to start the game with a double.
- 33:48Takes a quick curve in for a call strike.
- 33:56Down hitting 282, a full change of pace and he checked his swing.
- 34:06One ball, one strike.
- 34:14When Whitey throws that full change, the ball drastically drops.
- 34:20It reacts, scares to be a screwball as a curve inside ball two.
- 34:28Whitey says, no it is not a screwball.
- 34:30He says, because I do not give my hand the reverse twist.
- 34:35It may look like it, he says, but it's not.
- 34:43Two on pitch, one on line foul outside left field.
- 34:51Two and two.
- 35:16And a deal.
- 35:25So that gives Whitey two strikeouts, 186 for the season.
- 35:31And the score at the end of the inning and a half, first game,
- 35:33Cleveland to New York nothing.
- 35:37Today more and more motorists are enjoying better engine performance

- 36:46Well, Mickey Mantle steps in.
- 36:49Now just let out a roar.
- 36:51He made his way to the plate.
- 36:53He gets right-handed Lapland.
- 36:55Cleveland, Mickey of course, switches, batting left-handed.
- 37:05Mantle hitting 324.
- 37:08Swings and fouls it back.
- 37:13It's a sharp curve. He broke right down in there.
- 37:192-0 and third above the Indians.
- 37:24Wally Moses goes to the first.
- 37:25Funk says Eddie is third for New York. Pack ball is high outside. 1-1.
- 37:43They do not overshift the jacket into right on Mickey as they do on Roger.
- 37:49The third is outside ball too.
- 37:58Lapland with the winningest percentage of Indians at Cleveland.
- 38:0112-4.
- 38:11Right-hander Dio and Mantle swings it the long drive to left center.
- 38:19There's Fantoma going back.
- 38:20Fantoma is in the cross.
- 38:21He'll take it around first and then into second base.
- 38:23He's on his way to third.
- 38:25And he'll poke the ball in and Mantle flies ahead of it for a triple.
- 38:30And third base, Magella Hawes jumps up and puts up the ball.
- 38:34Mantle was not looking to bat.
- 38:37Running down to third base, the Cleveland manager.
- 38:49Mantle was in there just a quick second ahead of the crow from the strong-armed trucks upheld.
- 38:55And then Della Hawes claimed and then the bike went down to back him up.
- 39:00But Mantle in his fly didn't quite get third base.
- 39:05But Charlie Barry, who was right in position to do it, says yes he did.
- 39:10So it is a triple for Mantle deep in the left center off Fantoma's drive.
- 39:14He went back as far as he could.
- 39:20So this is the first Yankee hit.
- 39:25So Mantle left his sixth triple and here is John Blanchard hitting a 3-11.
- 39:33He has nobody out.
- 39:35Lasts the second inning.
- 39:39That's still caught right on Blanchard.
- 39:42He's got the ball to right field.
- 40:06That's the 20th home run.
- 40:27So the Yankees driving for a new team total of home runs.
- 40:31At 217, the old mark is 221, and here's Howard.
- 40:37Takes the curve for a call strike.
- 40:40Elston with his magnificent percentage of 362.
- 40:44Blanchard gets that ball in the third deck.
- 40:47The only thing he had to wait to be sure is state pay-off.
- 40:50Curve is strike two, half swing.
- 40:57Boom, triple on the home run, ball even, 2-2.
- 41:02Howard is still buzzing.
- 41:09Next three, sidearm curve ball.
- 41:12Howard is struck out.
- 41:17Unless the weather interferes, the last three days of the year,
- 41:28this is the last double header for the stadium, this is the last one scheduled.
- 41:33And the crowd is out here to see it.
- 41:35There's Gowan swinging, hits the ball to right field, and two for a face-hit.
- 41:42Hits the wall on the face-out, the Moose comes in the second base with a double.
- 41:48Boy, they didn't leave that back in the clubhouse.
- 42:03So the Moose hit a line drive right up the alleyway in right center field.
- 42:10Now they have Boya third baseman.
- 42:19Yankee's the one that'll last ten.
- 42:36Check the runner in second, one down, Boya hits a curve with a high foul up by first base.
- 42:42Power comes over, close to the stands, and makes the catch.
- 42:50Now Whitey Ford a moment ago was behind two-nothing, and now he walks up to the plate, even.
- 43:06Whitey has 16 hits.
- 43:12Gowan was two out, he's down on second.
- 43:24Curve is into the dirt, and Romano blocks it with his chest, ball one.
- 43:37Boy, they have some fellows in this lineup that can really hit that ball.
- 43:52This is inside, ball two.
- 44:06Two-nothing pitch in their first strike.
- 44:11Blanchett has become a very remarkable ball player this year.
- 44:16I've just asked our statistician Bill Kane to do a little medical formula.
- 44:29Two-one pitch, high, ball three.
- 44:33He's going to figure out for the ratio of Blanchett's home runs four times at bat,
- 44:40contrasted with Madeline Marrott's, because here's Blanchett with 20.
- 44:46I can tell you this, right now, he won't do it.
- 44:50Let's see, he's got a 50 to Whitey, three-one.
- 44:52He does, gets it over for the strike.
- 44:55Madeline has been up 479 times in her 52 home runs.
- 45:04Marrott has been up 521 times in her 56.
- 45:10These are official at bat.
- 45:13Whitey swings, hits the ball through the middle.
- 45:15The base hit, down the coming around third, and scores, and the Yankees go ahead, three-two, and Whitey puts himself one up.
- 45:29Now Blanchett has been up officially 197 times in her 20 home runs.
- 45:37Now, so Whitey Ford puts himself ahead three-two, with a single through the middle, his 17th hit.
- 45:45He's an excellent hitting pitcher.
- 45:48And for Whitey, that's his ninth run by today.
- 45:54Now, we've got Richardson up there, lost in the first inning.
- 46:01Wings and hits the pitcher, and the ball comes down to left field, fourth stop to second base.
- 46:07Richardson's line drives, struck Lappman on the right side of his body.
- 46:13It caught him in the midst of his follow-through.
- 46:16He couldn't move his hand.
- 46:18It hit him, I think, right around the wrist.
- 46:21But it happened so fast, it could have hit him in the stomach.
- 46:25And there's the trainer running out, stops the run out, and then the pitcher says, no.
- 46:39Wally Park, the trainer now is going out, told him to go out there and see whether that ball hit Lappman.
- 46:46And it ricocheted through the hole between third and third into left field.
- 46:52The trainer talking to the pitcher.
- 46:56He actually hit him.
- 47:01The Yankees have come up now with five base hits here in the last second.
- 47:12Crisetti reminding forward on his second two-man route.
- 47:15Here's Kubek at the plate.
- 47:17Wings and hits the ball down to right field line.
- 47:19It is Brown Roo's double, bounce it in.
- 47:24Ford scores.
- 47:25Richardson has held third.
- 47:27And Dyches is on his way out to the mound.
- 47:32Maris will hit back the ninth man in the inning.
- 47:35Where's number nine?
- 47:41Brown Roo's double for Tony.
- 47:47Here's him 43 runs by the band.
- 47:53Yankees four on the Indians two.
- 47:56Cleveland got out in front two-nothing, and then the Yankees on their second opportunity.
- 48:06Started backing Lappman.
- 48:13Here's a funny situation.
- 48:17There's a new pitcher coming in for Cleveland.
- 48:19When the manager goes out to remove the pitcher, you know he's going to do it when he says,
- 48:23give me the ball.
- 48:24And the man who takes the ball away from the pitcher, that's it.
- 48:27Dyches goes out there, but the ball, Kubek gets bounced in the right field stand,
- 48:31and you know these spectators don't throw him back.
- 48:34So all of a sudden Dyches wants the ball.
- 48:40He wants the ball to change, and also he wants to hand the ball to the new pitcher,
- 48:43and he has to come down the plate out far to get it.
- 48:50This is Bobby Locke walking in.
- 48:52He's relieved previously in this series.
- 48:55So Lappman is running.
- 49:05Locke has gotten the ball from Dyches.
- 49:09Lappman has walked away.
- 49:12It is 4-2 for the Yankees.
- 49:13Runners are at second and third.
- 49:15Two men are out.
- 49:21The inning has lasted 12 minutes.
- 49:24Because I know we started around 2.30.
- 49:30The man has stepped in.
- 49:32I thought, well, I'll wait and make the station break.
- 49:34End of the second inning.
- 49:36Haven't got the end of the second inning yet.
- 49:42Maritz on his birthday is 27.
- 49:46In the first inning he hit a routine fly ball to the right fielder.
- 49:50Now Bill Kane worked out these figures.
- 49:52Mantle this year is hitting a home run every nine official at bat.
- 49:58Maritz is hitting a home run every nine and three tenths official at bat.
- 50:03And Mantle is hitting a home run every nine and eight tenths official at bat.
- 50:09So I would say generally they're about hitting in the same tempo.
- 50:13When you get into the back of that decimal point it doesn't mean very much.
- 50:25In case you wonder about the stuff in the ad-bass between Mantle and Maritz,
- 50:32it tells you that Maritz gets more balls to swing at as far as they walk Mantle.
- 50:48Well, here's Maritz up there.
- 50:52The photographer has zeroed in on him.
- 50:56There's a lot of eyes out here too, boy.
- 51:034-2 for everybody Yankees.
- 51:05There's a curve in for a call strike.
- 51:07Probably locked at the right-hander.
- 51:21Maritz is on 116 walks this year, Maritz 82.
- 51:34There's a ground ball hit through the left side for a fake hit.
- 51:37Richardson is scoring.
- 51:38Here's Hubeck coming in to score.
- 51:40And Maritz will lead the league and run right at end.
- 51:44Poffey drives in two more to lift his total to 132.
- 51:51Yankees are now out in about 62.
- 51:55And Mantle, who started the inning, is coming up for the second time.
- 51:58He started with a tremendous triple to the opposite field in the left center.
- 52:03So a single to the opposite field to Maritz, single to the left,
- 52:06picks up these two runners.
- 52:09Those runs are charged to Lachman.
- 52:12Maritz, of course, is the responsibility of the Leafsman lock,
- 52:15and Mantle takes a front ball hit on his hand.
- 52:21Mickey Hubeck with a sudden run there, just as it was right on top of him.
- 52:40There's a low end side ball, too.
- 52:48Yankees six runs and seven hits here in the last of the second.
- 52:57Now it's the first phase.
- 53:05Mickey swings at a high curve ball, like one.
- 53:11Mantle has 156 hits.
- 53:14Maritz has 142.
- 53:26Mickey hitting 324, swinging on fouls of the back.
- 53:31Well, let's see, we haven't added in his base hit here in the second,
- 53:35so he's won a two-point bet.
- 53:37He'll see 25 or 26.
- 53:41All right, 22.
- 53:59Right-hander delivers way outside, ball free.
- 54:07Motion on the scoreboard, welcome Amateurville New York State County match camp.
- 54:25162, favorably, thank you, Miss, second inning up third, as all four, Mantle lost.
- 54:38Now we have Blanchard.
- 54:40We call it Mantle's triple for the home run in the second inning, which started.
- 54:52Blanchard getting on the end.
- 54:54Think about that punch right through there.
- 54:57Maritz Mantle, Blanchard, Howard.
- 55:00How would you like to pitch to that quartet?
- 55:04Blanchard left-hand hitter, way high outside, ball one.
- 55:14Block wants another base ball.
- 55:17Played on par, Yvonne, accommodation.
- 55:22Nothing in the rule that says an umpire has got to give a pitcher another ball,
- 55:26and there's nothing in the rule that says he hasn't got to.
- 55:30The umpire says it's a matter of keeping peace in the family.
- 55:42Low, ball two.
- 55:46In other words, as long as the request for another ball is kept within a reasonable limit,
- 55:50the umpires are honoring.
- 55:52But of course, they have the authority because they run the ballgames.
- 55:55They thought that a, you know, let's say a pitcher, for example, rejected a half of that,
- 55:58and the stuff is just being silly.
- 56:00They can make him pitch to the one.
- 56:07Two-nothing delivery is high outside, ball three.
- 56:14That's the same thing if a batter has to have a ball examined,
- 56:17the umpires will honor it if it's reasonable.
- 56:22But I remember out here the last time the Yankees were home,
- 56:26Charlie Burrows, Dr. LaFlate, and I always wanted a ball examined.
- 56:29And Burrows says, no, I just examined it.
- 56:31So all right.
- 56:33Then Marik hit it for a home run.
- 56:36That's a swing.
- 56:37There's a five-ball to straightaway center with just all the weight.
- 56:40Makes the catch.
- 56:42So 11 men batted, and six of them scored, and that was seven hits.
- 56:51Two men were left.
- 56:54So at the end of two innings of the first game, it is 6-7-0 for the Yankees, 2-4-0 for the Indians.
- 57:03I hope you'll use Atlantic Imperial in your car.
- 57:06It's the gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 57:30Bob Shepard on the 3A is speaking about when the Yankees are next home last week of the season,
- 57:37Tuesday night, the 26th with Baltimore on the next afternoon,
- 57:42Friday night, the 29th with the Red Sox in the next two afternoons.
- 57:48The Red Sox at the end of two innings are leading the Tigers 6-0.
- 57:54The Yankees have hit a home run.
- 58:00At the end, two and a half innings is Baltimore 1-0, the Baltimore run, a home run by France.
- 58:10Other games in the league will be coming in later.
- 58:14The National League is going now.
- 58:16Philadelphia leads the Chicago 1-0 at the end of the first inning on Callison's home run for the Phillies.
- 58:23Our old friend Tom Settement is starting for Pittsburgh and Milwaukee against Warren Fawn.
- 58:28Settement has won five and lost one since coming up with the power.
- 58:34Fawn is going to win number 307.
- 58:38He's amazing, isn't he?
- 58:41The Cottonwoods have had their first setback at Cincinnati and got a run out of it.
- 58:46Kentucky against Perky.
- 58:48But Sangley is coming in later from San Francisco.
- 58:51Now Jim Pearsall, who was thrown out by Trostoff-Cuback, is first up in the third.
- 58:56The board out there now with a four-run ball, six-two game.
- 59:00A curve is hit inside third down the left field corner for a base knock.
- 59:04Pearsall's around first. He's on his way to second.
- 59:07Here comes a throw and Pearsall is face.
- 59:17And here he is making a remonstrance with Bob Stewart.
- 59:23It is a double for Pearsall.
- 59:27Richardson was sending garlic for his second base, although there wouldn't be any so.
- 59:32And then, uh, Sanuena got the throw. He snapped it.
- 59:36So Pearsall gets the double.
- 59:40Double to left.
- 59:44Two-and-a-five off-righting. And here is Francona.
- 59:50Tito hitting 292.
- 59:54Takes the flat up for a called strike.
- 59:56Doesn't need on the outside.
- 1:00:01Pearsall averages 150th hit this year. He's having quite a season.
- 1:00:09That's your foot right on Tito, who crouches very much.
- 1:00:12Hits the ball in the right field on the line. Base hit.
- 1:00:15Marich takes on the first skip and Pearsall is held at third base for two reasons.
- 1:00:22One, when you're behind four runs, you can't be risky running.
- 1:00:29And two, Marich is on.
- 1:00:35He only have runners at first and third.
- 1:00:41This is six hits off-righting.
- 1:00:44Cleveland is taking more liberties with a little left-hander than they usually permit.
- 1:00:51The Yankees have the bullpen up again.
- 1:00:54They had Coach Stamperger going down there in the first inning.
- 1:00:58There's John Romano, who's single in the first inning and not going to run.
- 1:01:04Takes the curve low inside, ball one.
- 1:01:22Is now throwing in the bullpen. Has a curve hit foul between the coach and third base.
- 1:01:34One and one.
- 1:01:36That's the count of runners at first and third.
- 1:01:38Nobody out here in the third.
- 1:01:44Cleveland roughed up Whitey for two runs and four hits in the first inning.
- 1:01:47He got the start out in the second, but now the first two minutes have hit him here in the third.
- 1:01:59There's a trickle ball up toward third base and he goes foul.
- 1:02:03Pearsall was not going to try and score.
- 1:02:10One ball, two strikes.
- 1:02:12Romano would cross first.
- 1:02:14He couldn't wait to have the two other balls with the fair foul.
- 1:02:17He had to run. He was walking back.
- 1:02:30The Yankees run. They're all charged to the starter, Latham.
- 1:02:50Whitey looking at the baseball. There's Roy Wood counting the 50.
- 1:03:02The pitch is a little outside. Ball two. Two and two.
- 1:03:28For D.O., the curve swung on ground to foul, back at third.
- 1:03:39Whitey is taking more time today than is customary for him.
- 1:03:49But now he's got this big lead. He would like the best in the world to at least get five innings in and have some of the lead left.
- 1:04:01Under the existing rules, a starting pitcher cannot be credited with a win unless he pitches five innings.
- 1:04:11Delivers and has the ball that has hit out into short left center field and is dropping toward base hit between Kubeck and Mantle.
- 1:04:17This ball is home to make it now six to three.
- 1:04:21Front corner stops at second and here comes Hough going out to the mound.
- 1:04:35Hough takes the glass out of his bullpen.
- 1:04:42He is talking to Whitey. Hough so far hasn't made any motion.
- 1:04:52There is one thing about Whitey Ford. He is completely candid and forthrightly honest.
- 1:04:59For example, if a manager comes out and says, how do you feel Ford will tell it?
- 1:05:05Exactly, because I've heard Whitey say many times that the responsibility to the team is so important that it is up to you to tell the manager always exactly how you feel and then let him make the decision.
- 1:05:20And Hough points to the bullpen. So this will be all for Whitey and he cannot be a pitcher of record.
- 1:05:27He can either win or lose.
- 1:05:31I think it was apparent from the very start of the ball game, the very first hitter, that his stuff was simply not alive.
- 1:05:45So that's three runs and seven hits off Whitey. He's responsible for these two runners.
- 1:05:54He's been two runs today, gives him a total of 74.
- 1:06:08Long Jim Coates is now being announced and he's walking across right field.
- 1:06:14This is Coach's ball game to win or lose. He has 10 and 5. This is his 30-H ball game and he has been a two-way pitcher this year, both starting and out of the pins.
- 1:06:29Ford gets a hand as he walks off. So yesterday was Ford Day and today is.
- 1:06:42And in the third game, they were the Yankees.
- 1:06:45The Gossett Cleveland cloud is just so hot in the back of the neck you could buy an egg.
- 1:06:53They've lost 16 straight games to the Yankees here at the stadium and if you don't think that's not putting the ball under the saddle blanket, you've got another thought coming.
- 1:07:02Now Hough is going back into the dugout.
- 1:07:04Coates is checking his battery times with Howard and speaking of checking, we will call us for station identification.
- 1:07:22Good sound broadcasting for 1961. This is Quality Modern, WOKO Albany, New York.
- 1:07:29We'll send you OKO time, two minutes before 3 p.m.
- 1:07:41Howard has done absolutely yeoman service this year. He has been a laboring man and by pitching every fourth day and with remarkable success and with strong assists when necessary from a royal, it has made possible the rebuilding of a pitching staff.
- 1:08:05For example, the spring training camp, you certainly counted on Curling, you counted on Dipmaw.
- 1:08:15So suddenly, they were ineffective. Something had to be done and had to be done in the course of the season.
- 1:08:27A great test of managing the house.
- 1:08:30But now that Ford has done so much work, I would say that the number one consideration about him from now on is to get him tuned up for the World Series.
- 1:08:50All right. Jim Coates is ready to go ahead to Willie Ketlin who is singled in the first inning and knocked in a run. Yankee is getting 6-3, runners at first and second. We have nobody out.
- 1:09:02There's inside, too close to the belt, ball one.
- 1:09:28There's the service. There's a sharp curve. That's the flattest one on a miss down across the shins.
- 1:09:40Coates went the roof against Washington five days ago. Gave him one run, four hits. One intense game then.
- 1:09:53There's a curve that is fouled up. Howard is getting under it. Two-thirds of the way back to the stands and has it for the first time.
- 1:10:05So, one down. Foul ball to the catcher. And they're going to now it's Howard.
- 1:10:15That's a very severe crowd. With the outfield laid back in the right, he dropped a double inside the left field line.
- 1:10:23First inning. Getting 2-65. 6-3 New York. Yankees had a six-run explosion in the second.
- 1:10:37Fast ball is going on late foul ball. I'll say this, the coach is the very antithesis of Ford as far as pitching equipment goes.
- 1:10:48By the way, our stocky left-hander who is using breaking stuff today, not throwing hard.
- 1:10:56And coach is all in hungry face right-hander who throws hard.
- 1:11:10Jim ready. This ball came to win. You can hold it.
- 1:11:20It's here. It's going on as the ball hit out the right field. It may be trouble. It is.
- 1:11:26Oh, bold run. It still took the game to win, but he's got no lead.
- 1:11:55That ball failed in the lower right field fan. Not 10 feet fair. Coach first. Badly shook his head.
- 1:12:03It is now 6-6. The first five runs charged to Whitey. The sixth one charged to Coates.
- 1:12:13Now we have Woody Held. One man out. Fast ball slightly high inside. Ball one.
- 1:12:22Held hit a line drive with Maddell one-handed coming in in the first inning.
- 1:12:30All right, 6-6.
- 1:12:35Serves one run and misses. Strike one. One ball, one strike.
- 1:12:44It's going to be a rough afternoon, doesn't it?
- 1:12:54It's all right-handed deals. High curve ball. It's too high. Ball two.
- 1:13:00All right. So a poem. That's his fifth home run this year. He's run about it in a total of 61.
- 1:13:15Two-one delivery. Swung on as a high foul ball up alongside third. Boy, a hundred.
- 1:13:22Two-catch. Two-thirds of the way over to the stands. And we have two-ups.
- 1:13:32Third baseman Delahose. There's a playing in place of Phillips.
- 1:13:39He got hit on the hand early in this series.
- 1:13:56Swung on as a line drive over short and to left center for a base hit. Delahose goes around first base and save. Maddell quickly recovers the ball, throws it in.
- 1:14:10Single to left center. Now, this gets the lead pitcher Locke as the hitter, and it is Locke's ball game to win or lose.
- 1:14:26This game is good for back and forth. First it was 2-0 Cleveland. Then it was 6-2 New York.
- 1:14:30And by the time that Locke came in, it looked as though he would just be sort of the expendable long man out of the both hands.
- 1:14:41And now all of a sudden, here we go head-to-head. 6-6.
- 1:14:51This is the eighth man to bat for save on here in the third inning.
- 1:14:54The hitter is the coach, takes the sign from Howard. Delahose leads off first. Locke, the right-hand hitter.
- 1:15:01Swings at a curve, hits it to short. Two-back runs over, steps on second for the unassisted course, and that is the third-up.
- 1:15:10But before that happens, four runs, five hits, and the score at the end of two-and-a-half innings is Cleveland 6 and New York 6.
- 1:15:29If your car performance if it were several years older than it really is, well even a new car can't give you a smooth, even ride with a dirty carburetor.
- 1:15:39That's where Atlantic Imperial gasoline comes in. It cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 1:15:47And this is very important. You see, under ordinary driving conditions, harmful deposits can form around the lower carburetor walls.
- 1:15:56In time, these deposits can affect the action of the throttle plate, cause rough idling, frequent stalling, and gasoline waste.
- 1:16:05But not when you use Atlantic Imperial. It washes these deposits harmlessly away and with continued use keeps the new deposits from forming.
- 1:16:16I hope you will use Atlantic Imperial in your car. It's the gasoline that cleans your carburetor as you drive and then keeps it clean.
- 1:16:38The last half of the third inning. Howard first up, then Schauer and then Boyer. Bobby Locks will replace Lappman.
- 1:16:46He's now the pitcher of record at 6-6 ball game. The two starters are off the hook. As the ground ball hit up to a third, Delahoe's grab that puts it in the first place plenty of time and Howard is out.
- 1:17:04Now has Schauer removed it to double the right set on the second inning. Getting 273.
- 1:17:20Locks field, fastball low inside, ball one. Bobby Locks from Grindstone, Pennsylvania. It always strikes me as an interesting name for a town.
- 1:17:38Now that's going on and bow right back into the test protector. So you don't bow your mind. One and one. Mosin on the scoreboard. First quarter score. Baltimore Colts, 28, New York Giants, 13.
- 1:18:02And one pitch. There's the ball bounced high. The pitcher has to wait for it to come down. He grabs it close. The person's Schauer and he's out.
- 1:18:09Howard using that one hand all the time down at first.
- 1:18:17And now I've cleared it for you. All for one. Ball game hanging 6-6. Eight teams taking turns beating on the other.
- 1:18:44Pitch, curve ball in there.
- 1:18:48Now football season is opening early and earlier.
- 1:18:58There's a fastball going on in this. One thing that's done is it has divided up sports and outings.
- 1:19:09It used to be that you did baseball and then did football. Maybe you'd have an overlap for one day as a ground foul. Most two, which you could work out.
- 1:19:22Now it's getting with specialization even more keenly noted. Baseball announcer, I can't get away to do football and fight first.
- 1:19:39Got two sets of our five. Two strike sets, fastball high and five. Ball one. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:19:58One and two.
- 1:20:12Two down. Lock throw card delivers. There's a curve ball fouled off.
- 1:20:26There's been a correction that has come in on the printer about the big ball game at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were first credited with a run.
- 1:20:36The correction is they didn't get it and Cincinnati has got a run at the end of two innings and leading one-nothing.
- 1:20:41There's a high foul back out of play. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:20:47The game tonight is first place Cincinnati one and St. Louis nothing at the end of two.
- 1:21:00End of an inning, Pittsburgh is leading Milwaukee three-nothing. Those runs belong to our old friend Tom Stedeman.
- 1:21:06Curve fouled off from the upper left field stand. End of three innings, the Red Sox who were close this season here the last three days are leading Detroit six to nothing.
- 1:21:18In the four, Baltimore is leading Washington two-nothing. Baltimore is driving to take second place away from the Tigers. I mean driving.
- 1:21:45Lock one and two with William.
- 1:21:53There's another foul back, still one and two.
- 1:21:58Baltimore is three games back at Detroit. If you don't want to go get them on in paper.
- 1:22:13You might with all these foul balls is having to.
- 1:22:19No, no, no, no, what is it? I thought he was going to call for some more baseballs. He's calling for the trainer.
- 1:22:25Just come out, come up there and see boy his left hand. Apparently maybe he's pulled a blister.
- 1:22:30How does that do that? He's putting a piece of tape on the left hand.
- 1:22:46Let me see now. I think it's the index finger. Now Ramon moves between us. Now he moves away. Thank you, John.
- 1:22:55Now let's take a look. Hold your hand out. We'll see where that bandage went.
- 1:23:10All right, one ball, two strikes. There is a curve bowed off. Still one and two.
- 1:23:29Six, six ball game. He's stuck him out for the high inside flat. So it is one, two, three.
- 1:23:40And at the end of three, the total is a six, nine, all for the Indians and six, seven, all for the Yankees.
- 1:23:50Now Phil, our statistician Bill Kane has been very cooperative this year, but I asked him to do something just now
- 1:23:58and he sadly refused and I wondered if you would do it. What's that? I wanted to go down and ask
- 1:24:04how, what happened with that six to two lead? I'm like Bill Kane, I'm not going to do it.
- 1:24:10Well he said I doubt if I'd get back and if I did you couldn't use his answer. Out throw.
- 1:24:18That must be just about talked out. Twelve runs and sixteen hits in three innings. Man, this looks like one of those days.
- 1:24:29Have a little candlelight dinner tonight, about twelve thirty. I figure we'll have a long day at the ballpark.
- 1:24:38On the scoreboard of the American League, it's Red Sox six, Detroit nothing at the end of three.
- 1:24:43Coplitz replaced Marcy in the third, Connelly for the Red Sox. Billy Broden is just home in the fourth, that makes it six, one.
- 1:24:51Jashrimski home in the second with one on for the Red Sox. Baltimore two, Washington nothing at the end of three and a half.
- 1:24:57McLean against the Strada. Jackie Brand and Brooks Robinson of home in. Chicago at L.A. has not started. Minnesota at Kansas City hasn't started.
- 1:25:05National League, Philly's one, Cubs nothing at the end of two. Roberts against Cardwell, Taliesin home in.
- 1:25:10Pittsburgh three, Milwaukee nothing at the end of an inning and a half. Sturtevant against Fawn.
- 1:25:15Cincinnati one, Cardinals nothing at the end of two and a half. Tadecki against Turkey. Los Angeles and San Francisco not underway.
- 1:25:24Johnny Temple up for his third time in the ballgame here in the top of the fourth. He doubled and scored in the first, struck out in the second.
- 1:25:31Jim Coates replaced Whitey Ford, fires a fastball right in there, strike call.
- 1:25:39On deck, Jimmy Pearsaw.
- 1:25:49Curve fouls and going out of play down the right field line, nothing in two.
- 1:25:54Man, look at that first score to score.
- 1:25:57Baltimore Colts 28, New York Giants 13. They're playing up in the Yale Bowl.
- 1:26:04That's equivalent to this score here in the third inning of 6-6. A lot of score.
- 1:26:18Nothing in two on Temple.
- 1:26:23Wind up by Coates, fastball high inside ball one.
- 1:26:29Got a real good crowd here today.
- 1:26:36Never really expected this much, but the fans so interested in the Madel Maris race for home run honors that they're coming out.
- 1:26:43Curve misses outside two and two.
- 1:27:06All right, Coates ready for the 2-2 delivery. There it is, and it's a foul back in the upper deck out of play.
- 1:27:18Out holds it two and two.
- 1:27:33Nobody out, nobody on, top of the fourth.
- 1:27:48Again the 2-2 delivery. Curve is high, ball three, three and two.
- 1:28:00Temple batting 281.
- 1:28:04He's been having a pretty good series against the Yankees.
- 1:28:14Now the payoff bet. Inside ball four.
- 1:28:20That's the first walk given up by Yankee pitches in the ball game. Whitey Ford who went two innings didn't walk anybody.
- 1:28:28Brings up Jimmy Pearsall, bounce the short, double the left field and scores.
- 1:28:38Jimmy hit one right inside third base and Blanchett played it perfectly off the wall, made a good throw to second.
- 1:28:44And there was a little dispute on the call at second base. It was close, but Pearsall just beat the tag.
- 1:28:51Pitch to Jimmy, pitch out outside ball one.
- 1:28:58Elston Howard figured that Pearsall and Temple might have the hit and run on.
- 1:29:04On deck, Tito Francona.
- 1:29:10Temple leading away. Fast ball over, strike call one-on-one.
- 1:29:16Boyer is playing way in at third.
- 1:29:22Garron holding first against Temple.
- 1:29:33Time is called by Johnny Temple at first base.
- 1:29:39Wanted Pearsall to step out of the batter's box. They recheck the signal for a third base coach, Luke Apling.
- 1:29:49Now everybody ready to go.
- 1:30:01Al Renof is up in the Yankee both end. Quick throw to first, Temple back.
- 1:30:13Here's the stretch. Curve hit in the ground at second base. Richardson to Kubek for one, back to first, double play. They got them.
- 1:30:23The Yankees' 162nd double play of the year.
- 1:30:29Boyer Richardson made a pretty play on that ball. As he caught it, he had to flip it backhanded and sort of underhand it to Kubek.
- 1:30:37Couldn't get too much on it, but Tony came across the bag and fired the first and then Pearsall.
- 1:30:44Throw it two out, and here's Francona flying to right, single to right. Tito scored one.
- 1:30:52Last year, the Yankees had only 160 double plays all year.
- 1:30:57First pitch to Francona is ball one, rolled back to the screen. And already this year, the Yankees have 162.
- 1:31:16Two out, nobody on. Wind up by Coates.
- 1:31:23Fastball line down the left field line. That's in there for extra bases, rolling down in the corner.
- 1:31:29Lanchard picks it up, and Francona's in with a stand-up double.
- 1:31:35So again, the big double play that the Yankee infield came up with.
- 1:31:40Keeps the run from scoring.
- 1:31:43That is the 10th hit for the Indians off Yankee pitching, and it brings up Johnny Romano, who has two of those 10 hits.
- 1:31:50He scored twice and driven in two runs.
- 1:31:54Mind the single to left, dropped the single in short center field.
- 1:32:02Romano now over the 300 mark again, batting at 3-0-1.
- 1:32:12Francona's second, score side 6-6. The curve is low and away, ball one.
- 1:32:36On deck, Willie Kirkland.
- 1:32:43Coates sets. Fastball high and inside, ball two, two-nothing.
- 1:33:08All right, here's a stretch by Coates. Fastball fouls right over our heads.
- 1:33:17A little too high, though. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:33:34Two out, Francona leads off second base.
- 1:33:44Right-handed set. Fastball high, ball three, three-and-one.
- 1:34:13All right, Coates ready again.
- 1:34:193-1 pitch is a ground foul outside of third. Full count on Romano.
- 1:34:42Both starting pitches were knocked out in a hurry.
- 1:34:46Gary Lattmann, who started, went an inning and two thirds, and Whitey went two full innings.
- 1:34:55Looks like a hitter's day here today at the stadium.
- 1:35:00Ready now for the payoff pitch. There it is. It's a curve popped in the air foul,
- 1:35:05and Garron's chasing it near the stands, but he can't get it. It goes back about five or six rows.
- 1:35:13And the holes are three and two.
- 1:35:38All right, Coates ready again.
- 1:35:48The run is going. The ball is fouled again over our heads.
- 1:35:53And Frank LaFrosia gets one of the easiest foul balls I've ever seen.
- 1:35:58It bounced off a few hands, rolled down off the top, took one little bounce, and Frank just picked it up.
- 1:36:07So it's still three and two.
- 1:36:31And it's stretched by Coates.
- 1:36:37Curve swung it, and this strikes three.
- 1:36:43So for the Indians in the top of the fourth, no runs, one hit. No Yankees errors, one man left.
- 1:36:48At the end of three and a half, Cleveland sixth and the Yankees sixth.
- 1:36:56That's new power mowers. Sure looks easy to operate, George. Yeah.
- 1:37:01Which our car performed half as well. What's the trouble?
- 1:37:05Oh, I don't like a vibrating machine all over the place.
- 1:37:10Sounds familiar. Your car the same way?
- 1:37:12It used to be. Turned out the carburetor was full of dirt.
- 1:37:16Oh, what did you do? Clean this, of course.
- 1:37:19Hey, that must have been a big job.
- 1:37:22I had nothing to it. I just started using Atlantic Imperial gasoline.
- 1:37:26What's that got to do with it?
- 1:37:28Hey, where have you been?
- 1:37:30I thought everybody knew by now that Atlantic Imperial gasoline cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 1:37:36Atlantic Imperial. And it works for you?
- 1:37:39It works for me.
- 1:37:41Boy, I'll have to start using Atlantic Imperial gasoline right away.
- 1:37:45Meanwhile, back to the grass.
- 1:37:49That's one problem Atlantic Imperial can't solve.
- 1:37:55Right now let's pause for station identification.
- 1:38:08At 1460 on the radio dial, you're in tune with Quality Modern, WOKO, Albany, New York.
- 1:38:14Good sound broadcasting for 1961. WOKO time, 27 minutes past 3 p.m.
- 1:38:21That, by the way, single the center field or driving a run.
- 1:38:30Coast is 1 for 34 batting, 029. Takes the fastball right down the middle. Strike one, crawl. Bobby Locke on the mound.
- 1:38:43Pitches of record right now are Bobby Locke for the Indians and Jim Coates for the Yankees.
- 1:38:49There's a swing and a miss at a curve. Strike two.
- 1:38:53One year, Coates had a great year at the place for the Yankees.
- 1:38:59He hit nothing but line drive.
- 1:39:04Curve, strike three, crawl. Jim stepped back and the ball broke over.
- 1:39:11That's one out here. Here's Bobby Richardson who walked and singled off Barry Latman.
- 1:39:16The ball was hit so hard off Latman that it kicked between short and third out to left field.
- 1:39:23I don't know whether Barry was injured on that play or not, but after the next man double he was taken out of the ball game.
- 1:39:36Hitch to Richardson, taken first strike. Tony Kubek on deck.
- 1:39:52One strike fastball inside, one on one.
- 1:39:57Cleveland scored two on the first, Yankees scored six on the bottom of the second, and the Indians came back with four on the top of the third.
- 1:40:04That's the way it stands now, six-six.
- 1:40:12Fastball line to right center field, way back there, and that ball is one hop against the right center field wall.
- 1:40:20Richardson around first, digging for second and holds up.
- 1:40:24And that's a lot of power for little Bobby Richardson in the opposite field.
- 1:40:28A ball hit just about 400 feet, one hop against the right center field bleacher wall.
- 1:40:35One of the longest doubles that Richardson has ever hit, that's for sure.
- 1:40:41That's the second hit off lock, the Yankees' eighth hit of the ball game, and for Richardson his 16th double of the year.
- 1:40:48Brings up Tony Kubek, picking up doubles. Tony has 37, leading both major leagues in that department.
- 1:40:56He doubled in the second inning after hitting a double play in the first inning.
- 1:41:00Tony is driven in one run, adding 279.
- 1:41:05Richardson is second with one out.
- 1:41:08Stretch to pitch to Kubek is bunned foul and back of the play.
- 1:41:11Tony trying to drag one with the right side of the infield playing back.
- 1:41:19Richardson hit that ball the way he did in last year's World Series.
- 1:41:34On deck, Roger Maris.
- 1:41:49Fast ball in the dirt, knocked down by Romano. Bobby holds his second base.
- 1:41:58Last year's World Series, Richardson had 11 base hits, two doubles, two triples, one homer, and 12 runs batted in.
- 1:42:09He broke records that have been held by sluggers like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio.
- 1:42:16Fantastic series.
- 1:42:21Back side, ready for the 1-1 pitch. A foul out of play in the upper deck and back of third.
- 1:42:33One ball, two strikes.
- 1:42:54That's a good thing the Yankees have an off day tomorrow the way this ball game is going, and over an hour and a half we haven't played three and a half innings yet.
- 1:43:03Fast ball high and tight. Tony sits down at the 2-2 count.
- 1:43:21That's Rod Richardson leading off second.
- 1:43:29Block ready for his 2-2 delivery.
- 1:43:32A fly ball to left field. Keto Frank corner right there and takes it for the second out.
- 1:43:40At the last second, Keto had a little trouble with that ball, but he caught it. Here's Roger Maris.
- 1:43:54Roger fly to right field in the first inning, single between short and third in the second inning to drive in two runs, giving him a total of 132 RBI.
- 1:44:05272. 56 homers.
- 1:44:12On deck, Mickey Matos, stretched by a lot. Pitch outside ball one.
- 1:44:20When Roger gets a base hit to left field, it's almost as exciting to see him hit a home run.
- 1:44:28Very solid as he hit a ball to the left of second base.
- 1:44:39Here's a 1-0 pitch. Outside again, ball two, 2-0.
- 1:44:57Richardson is second, now has 160 base hits on the air. That's the high of the Yankee hitters.
- 1:45:10Ready for the 2-0 pitch.
- 1:45:12Fast ball hit, keep to right. And curving foul, holy cow, he missed a home run by inches.
- 1:45:22Roger Maris hit a ball that just missed hitting the foul call for number 57.
- 1:45:29Roger never left the batter's box trying to use a little body English. And what a line drive he hit. Oh, man.
- 1:45:41Oh, that was close.
- 1:45:49Two balls, one strike. The stretch curve is a check swing fly ball down the left field line.
- 1:45:57And going into the stands out of play, Delahoe has chased it way back. Couldn't catch up to it.
- 1:46:04Roger was trying to hold up on that swing.
- 1:46:11Johnny Temple runs in from second base to talk with Locke.
- 1:46:16That ball went out like a bullet. Didn't have too much chance to curve. It was just pulled a little bit too much.
- 1:46:29Two balls, two strikes, two outs. The score tied 6-6. This is the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:46:53All right, ready for the 2-2 delivery. High and away, ball three.
- 1:47:15Now the payoff pitch to Maris. Here it is, and it's a curve fouled in back of the plate. Curved in three and two.
- 1:47:28You can tell by the way they're pitching Maris and Maddell that the pitchers are not trying to let these two hit his break the record.
- 1:47:37They hit a home run, they earn it.
- 1:47:45Gim will have the 3-2 pitch. Curve, he checks his swing as low inside ball four.
- 1:47:52Romano started to walk off the field.
- 1:47:58That'll bring up Mickey Maddell, who tripled and scored in the second inning walk, also in the second inning as he came to bat twice in one inning.
- 1:48:11Mickey batting 3-26. Maris at first, Richardson at second.
- 1:48:19Now up with Maris' 83rd walk of the year.
- 1:48:30Here's a curve overstrike call. Maddell has 117 base on balls.
- 1:48:50On deck, Johnny Blanchard. Pitch to Mickey, a ground ball at second. Temple up with it. Goes to Vick's power for the outs.
- 1:49:02So for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth, no runs on one hit. No Indian errors, two men left. At the end of fourth full innings, it's Cleveland sixth and the Yankees sixth.
- 1:49:13And right now I'd like to mention.
- 1:49:31Again on the scoreboard, it's the Red Sox seven, Detroit two at the end of four and a half.
- 1:49:36Bruton and Yastremski of home it. Baltimore three, Washington nothing at the end of five. Brant and Brooks Robinson of home it. Chicago at L.A.
- 1:49:45And Minnesota, Kansas City have not started. In the National League, it's the Phillies one, the Cubs nothing at the end of three and a half.
- 1:49:52Callison home it. Pittsburgh three, Milwaukee nothing at the end of two and a half. Cincinnati one, Cardinals nothing at the end of four and a half. And Los Angeles at San Francisco not on the way.
- 1:50:17For the Indians, Willie Kirkland will lead off Kirkland's single assent at a drive in a run in the first inning and fouled out to the catcher.
- 1:50:33Six six ball game.
- 1:50:49Ground ball to first base, Garren backhands it, flips underhand to coach covering in time to get Kirkland. For a big fellow that Kirkland can't get down the line.
- 1:51:04And that'll bring up Vick Power who double a left field and then hit a three run home to the opposite field in the third inning.
- 1:51:16That was only Vick's fifth home of the year.
- 1:51:20Giving him a total of sixty one RBI's now.
- 1:51:24Setting two sixty seven.
- 1:51:32That's blown away ball one.
- 1:51:39Well today is Roger Maris' twenty seventh birthday.
- 1:51:46Happy birthday Roger.
- 1:51:48Pitch to Vick Power foul back of the plate.
- 1:51:51One on one.
- 1:51:57Man what a career he's got ahead of him. Just twenty seven years old.
- 1:52:16One one curve ball hit down the right field line close to the hole and foul deep in the right field corner.
- 1:52:26One ball two strikes.
- 1:52:46One ball two strikes one out nobody on.
- 1:52:54That ball almost hit by it did hit him he goes to first base.
- 1:53:00Vick Power now pointing to Jim Coates.
- 1:53:03Trying to say that Coates threw at him intentionally.
- 1:53:08And Vick Power was just nicked.
- 1:53:11With that ball on the hand he's throwing the bat back walking towards the mound and pointing his finger at Coates and playing something as he goes to first base.
- 1:53:25And Jimmy Dyches now wants to talk with Frank Umott.
- 1:53:31And it was off Jim Coates that Vick Power hit the three run homer.
- 1:53:37And Coach Low Bridgdom Dyches now talking to Umott.
- 1:53:44You know if it is determined that a pitcher threw intentionally at a hitter.
- 1:53:51He can be given a stiff spine and suspended.
- 1:53:57And Vick Power is not too happy at first base.
- 1:54:02And he has made no bones about it.
- 1:54:04Here's Woody Held who lined a center field.
- 1:54:08Maddell making a fine running catch and then popped the third.
- 1:54:13One away.
- 1:54:14Court tied 6-6. Pitch to Held high ball one.
- 1:54:40Vick Throw to first. Power back. And Vick Power says throw to the plate.
- 1:54:45He points into the plate to Jim Coates.
- 1:54:49And Vick Power now arguing with first base umpire Joe Lynch a lot.
- 1:54:53Coach throws over there but Vick had his foot on the bag.
- 1:55:06Well we might have a little activity, a little action in this ball game before it's over.
- 1:55:13Jimmy Pearsaw now standing on the top step to the Indian dugout.
- 1:55:17Looks like he's ready to charge out there.
- 1:55:29Tell you one thing if they have a rhubarb I'm in the right spot up here.
- 1:55:34I've been in a few of them.
- 1:55:37Alright here's the stretch.
- 1:55:39Curve is high. Ball two, two or nothing.
- 1:55:46Pearsaw now yelling out to Coates.
- 1:55:59Somebody threw a rubber ball out in the field. Kogak picked it up throws it to Luke Adling.
- 1:56:08Looks like the folks are out here having a picnic.
- 1:56:15Alright ready for the two nothing pitch.
- 1:56:18Inside ball three, three or nothing.
- 1:56:23Mike Delahose on deck.
- 1:56:40Three nothing delivery. High inside ball four.
- 1:56:48Bell walks, Vick Power walking slowly to second base.
- 1:56:55And Pearsaw is waving a towel at Coates.
- 1:57:02And trying to get Jim's attention. Ralph Houch is going out to the mound now.
- 1:57:11Working with Jim Coates, Bobby Richardson and Nelson Howard there.
- 1:57:22And Ralph's going to leave them in. He's telling Coates to never mind the riding from the opposing team,
- 1:57:29but to concentrate on the hitter.
- 1:57:32One away, runners at first and second.
- 1:57:35Inside six, six and the top of the fifth, Nevada Mike Delahose flying to center and single to center.
- 1:57:54Alright, Power leads off second. Woody held off first. The stretch by Coates.
- 1:57:58Third ball is high and away, ball one. Pearsaw still waving the towel.
- 1:58:19Throw to second base and Power is safe.
- 1:58:22And Power did not slide back in a second and Bobby Richardson argues very briefly with second base dunk by a Bob Stewart.
- 1:58:31Vick Power was almost fixed off second. He did not slide back into the bag.
- 1:58:38And that would have made Coates very happy.
- 1:58:44Vick's taking a big lead down there.
- 1:58:49Here's the one-nothing fit. A ground ball to third. Boy, a step down third.
- 1:58:54Throw to first, double play.
- 1:59:03For the Indians, in the top of the fifth, no runs, no hits, no Yankees. There is one man left.
- 1:59:09At the end of four and a half, it's Cleveland six and the Yankees six.
- 1:59:37A funky Valentine. You'll have one pack of beer.
- 1:59:41Big cans of beer. So crispy, refreshing anytime.
- 1:59:46Valentine, Valentine. So nice.
- 1:59:49Valentine. Just right. It's a crisp, sweet, fleshy Valentine.
- 1:59:55Happy on the hands, holding down like a can.
- 1:59:59Take the Jolly Creek back. Jolly, Jolly Creek back home today.
- 2:00:06Next time, take along a six-pack, a Jolly six-pack of Valentine beer.
- 2:00:12It carries with ease, cools in a breeze.
- 2:00:15And best of all, it gives you six icy cold cans of the crisp, refreshing.
- 2:00:22Take along a six-pack, Jolly, Jolly six-pack of light, cold Valentine beer.
- 2:00:31While Bobby Locke was loosening up, Jimmy Jakes hopped out of the Cleveland dugout
- 2:00:34to talk with Frank Humon once again.
- 2:00:37For the Yankees, Johnny Blanchard leads off. Blanchard was up twice in the second inning.
- 2:00:43Homers with Mantle at third base and then flying to center field.
- 2:00:54Johnny now batting 312 with 20 homers and 47 RBI.
- 2:01:04It takes Blanchard to overstrike one call.
- 2:01:11On deck, Elston Howard.
- 2:01:19Fastball low, one-on-one.
- 2:01:22Half-time score now up in New Haven.
- 2:01:24Baltimore, coast 35, New York Giants 13.
- 2:01:29Johnny United having a great day again.
- 2:01:33Turn, hit deep to right, way back there.
- 2:01:36And oh, by inches, way up in the upper deck again.
- 2:01:46Man, that Blanchard is really tagging that ball.
- 2:01:52He hit that one high and deep.
- 2:01:57That ball couldn't have been fouled by much.
- 2:02:00One ball, two strikes.
- 2:02:18Curve way outside, two and two.
- 2:02:41Two-two pitch outside, ball three, three and two.
- 2:03:07Full count on Johnny Blanchard.
- 2:03:11Bobby Locke completely soaked through his uniform with perspiration.
- 2:03:19Now the payoff pitch to Blanchard.
- 2:03:22A foul coming near the Indian dugout.
- 2:03:25Romano chasing it, but he can't get it.
- 2:03:27Bounces on top of the dugout and then way back in the seat.
- 2:03:35Count holds at three and two.
- 2:04:04All right, Locke ready again for the three-two pitch.
- 2:04:07Swing and a miss, strike three.
- 2:04:09And Johnny went after a bad pitch.
- 2:04:11He knew it, tried to hold the bat back, but couldn't do it.
- 2:04:16Strikeout number three for Locke.
- 2:04:21That'll bring up Elston Howard.
- 2:04:23How it struck out the second inning, bounced the third in the third inning.
- 2:04:27Kelly now batting three-sixty and Locke now wants a foul from the Indian dugout.
- 2:04:49Fans are getting on somebody out there.
- 2:05:01Waving handkerchief.
- 2:05:05One out now, nobody on.
- 2:05:10Howard takes a fastball low, ball one.
- 2:05:24Another fastball outside this time, ball two, two and nothing.
- 2:05:44Cincinnati now leading the Cardinals two-nothing at the end of five.
- 2:05:49And the Red Sox leading Detroit eight-two at the end of five.
- 2:05:53And now San Francisco just getting underway.
- 2:06:05All right, here's a two-nothing pitch, it's a swing and a miss, strike one, two and one.
- 2:06:24On deck, Bill Scarron.
- 2:06:28Fastball hit over the pitcher's head and back at second, held up with it,
- 2:06:31close to first in time to get Howard, nice play by Woody Held.
- 2:06:36Had to throw that ball off balance.
- 2:06:39Two away and here's the moose who double a deep right center field in the second inning,
- 2:06:43hit back to the box in the third.
- 2:06:46Scarron has scored one.
- 2:06:51Two out in the six-six ball game, last of the fifth.
- 2:07:06Not good to the moose, curve that's low, ball one.
- 2:07:24Changeup curve hit, backhanded by the third baseman, a long throw.
- 2:07:29It's time for the out.
- 2:07:32And Mike Delaholz pulled a cleat boyer as he split on his knees and backhanded
- 2:07:36Scarron smash over the bag and threw a strike to first base.
- 2:07:42So the Yankees go down in order in the bottom of the fifth nothing across.
- 2:07:45At the end of five full innings, it's Cleveland sixth and the Yankees sixth.
- 2:07:52And right now, some important news for all bowling fans in the area.
- 2:07:57From September 9th through the 17th, the Long Island Fair will have a new special feature this year.
- 2:08:03Ballantine along with AMF and the Long Island Daily Press will sponsor the Long Island Pro-Am Bowler Fair.
- 2:08:10Here are the nation's top professional bowlers from the famous Ballantine bowling classics.

- 2:08:20will bowl against 100 amateurs picked at random.
- 2:08:24Now the amateurs will get 100 percent handicap from the pros.
- 2:08:28These fellows can really bowl and it's a great chance to study their technique.
- 2:08:32On top of that, it's a lot of fun.
- 2:08:35So be sure to attend the Long Island Fair at the Roosevelt Raceway and Exhibition Center in Westbury, Long Island.
- 2:08:41Don't miss the Ballantine bowling classic bowlers in action.
- 2:08:46Right now, let's pause for station identification.
- 2:08:59At 1460 on the radio dial, you're in tune with Quality Modern, WOKO and Albany New York.
- 2:09:05Good sound broadcasting for 1961. WOKO time, five minutes before 4 p.m.
- 2:09:11Red Sox, eight, Detroit, two at the end of five, Baltimore, three, Washington, nothing at the end of seven,
- 2:09:16Chicago at L.A. hasn't started, Minnesota, Kansas City a doubleheader, nothing, nothing at the end of one.
- 2:09:22The National League, Phillies won, Cubs won at the end of four and a half.
- 2:09:25Pittsburgh, three, Milwaukee, one at the end of four, Cincinnati, two, the Cardinals, nothing at the end of five.
- 2:09:31L.A. and San Francisco just getting underway.
- 2:09:35Bobby Locke swings and misses a curve ball, strike one.
- 2:09:53Locke's been up one, bounce to the shortstop.
- 2:09:56Fastball is low, one, one, a lot.
- 2:10:05On deck, Johnny Temple.
- 2:10:16One, one curve, low outside, ball two, two, one.
- 2:10:40Here's the two, one delivery.
- 2:10:42Now look at the bat went into the seat.
- 2:10:46I don't know whether it hit anybody, but that bat went back at least seven or eight rows into the box seat in back of the Cleveland dugout.
- 2:10:56And it did not hit the seat.
- 2:10:58We could not hear any noise.
- 2:10:59It hit somebody.
- 2:11:02And I just hope it didn't hit them hard.
- 2:11:05Very slippery up there at the plate today and the bat slipped out of Locke's hand.
- 2:11:14The policemen are there.
- 2:11:16It doesn't look like anyone was hurt.
- 2:11:22But I tell you, I've seen some bats thrown, but that one's a record.
- 2:11:28That bat went about the distance of home plate to second base.
- 2:11:33And they get the bat back.
- 2:11:36But I believe they should give them another bat.
- 2:11:39That's like a foul ball being hit into the stand.
- 2:11:42They're entitled as souvenir, more so if you're hit by a bat than a baseball.
- 2:11:47I think they're looking for a bat that nobody uses too much and will give it to the fans.
- 2:11:54And that's what they're going to do.
- 2:11:56And they get a brand new bat.
- 2:11:59And they get applause too.
- 2:12:06And a little youngster there.
- 2:12:07He may be bruised a little, but he's very happy.
- 2:12:10Nothing serious.
- 2:12:14Boy, everything's happening here today.
- 2:12:19Do two count on Bobby Locke.
- 2:12:25Curve fouled off the screen.
- 2:12:31And that ball struck underneath the screen.
- 2:12:34We're not surprised at anything that happens from here on in.
- 2:12:43Still two and two with nobody out, nobody on.
- 2:12:46And the top of the sixth, Gorth dies, takes six.
- 2:12:52Again, Coach, two-two delivery.
- 2:12:54It hit his bat, goes fair down the first baseline scourer, and picks it up and pegs Locke for the outs.
- 2:12:59Locke was trying to get out of the way of the inside fair ball.
- 2:13:04And the ball hit his bat, went right to the moose.
- 2:13:07That'll bring up Johnny Tempo.
- 2:13:09Doubled in the first inning and scored.
- 2:13:11Locke out in the second, walked in the fourth.
- 2:13:38Locke is giving the youngster who was hit with the bat a hand, and he's waving the bat up in the air.
- 2:13:46All right, here's the pitch to Tempo.
- 2:13:48A foul back out of play in the upper deck.
- 2:13:51Strike one.
- 2:14:01It must be a frightening feeling to see a back come sailing toward you.
- 2:14:05You can't catch it like a baseball.
- 2:14:11One strike curve will foul back in the lower deck.
- 2:14:24Nothing in two.
- 2:14:36Two strikes there, tie and tight ball one.
- 2:14:47On deck, Jimmy Pearsaw.
- 2:14:50And if Coates should throw a little close to Pearsaw, we'll see some fireworks.
- 2:14:55But he and Coates have tangled before.
- 2:15:00One ball, two strike curve is hit to right field.
- 2:15:03Roger Maris moves back a few steps under it and takes it.
- 2:15:09That's two away.
- 2:15:11And it'll bring up Pearsaw, bounce the short, doubled and scored, and then hit into a double play.
- 2:15:17Pearsaw was digging a hole in the batter's box while Umont was trying to clean home plate.
- 2:15:38All right, here's the windup.
- 2:15:40Pitch to Pearsaw, high inside ball one.
- 2:15:42And Jimmy gives Pearsaw the look and starts talking to him.
- 2:15:46It was really not that close.
- 2:15:48Pearsaw seems to be closer to the plate than his normal stance.
- 2:15:55He's swinging the bat back and forth and talking to Coates at the same time.
- 2:16:05One nothing pitch, curve over, strike one, one on one.
- 2:16:12On deck, Tito Francona.
- 2:16:25Here's the one, one pitch, another curve, foul back off the screen, one ball, two strikes.
- 2:16:54Here's the windup.
- 2:16:59Curve in the dirt, two and two, two out, nobody on.
- 2:17:10All players from both benches are picking their opponents in case of a free-for-all.
- 2:17:16They do that jokingly.
- 2:17:20And as for Umont, he's looking over and the Yankee dugout, here's the pitch, it's foul back in the upper deck.
- 2:17:28Out holds it two and two.
- 2:17:36Pretty good idea though, if you think there's going to be a rhubarb,
- 2:17:39pick out somebody you know is kind of friendly.
- 2:17:51Trouble is in a fight too many of the opponents would pick me.
- 2:17:56Good thing I could run.
- 2:18:05All right, still two and two on Pierce Hall.
- 2:18:22Coates is two, two pitch, wing and a miss, strike three.
- 2:18:27He struck them out.
- 2:18:31And the Indians get down in order in the top of the sixth inning, nothing across.
- 2:18:35At the end of five and a half it's Cleveland sixth and the Yankees sixth.
- 2:18:45To be crisp a beer must be icily light.
- 2:18:51With true lager flavor, crisp icily right.
- 2:19:01Lively golden, crispily clear, the crisp refresher.
- 2:19:08Valentine, valentine beer.
- 2:19:12Pleasure is the purpose of the crisp refresher.
- 2:19:15Your first swallow and everyone to follow is light and crisp and golden.
- 2:19:20It's your pleasure for today's valentine.
- 2:19:23So clap your hands, clap your feet, snap your fingers.
- 2:19:31And ask the man for valentine, the crisp refresher, valentine, valentine beer.
- 2:19:41Since 1840, America's finest.
- 2:19:53For the Yankees, Fleet Boyer will lead off to be followed by Jim Coates.
- 2:19:58Maybe followed by a little fireworks.
- 2:20:03Boyer popped the first base and struck out.
- 2:20:13Score field tie 6-6.
- 2:20:20Lock into the windup.
- 2:20:21It's the Boyer, a foul just to our left out of play.
- 2:20:39Lock comes back with a curve that's fouled in back of the play picked up by Romano, nothing in two.
- 2:20:57Rick Powell is still talking with first base umpire Joe Lincolotta.
- 2:21:13Now the one ball two strike curve ball is low inside, two and two.
- 2:21:34Two-two pitch, foul on the upper deck down the left field line, kick down the lower deck.
- 2:21:57Two and two on Boyer.
- 2:22:15Boyer's Barbie lock uniform is really soaked.
- 2:22:17It must be heavy out there.
- 2:22:20Now he wants a new baseball.
- 2:22:38Two-two pitch, foul back in the upper deck out of play.
- 2:22:43On a day like this a pitcher can lose easily ten pounds and as much as fifteen or seventeen.
- 2:23:00Pitch is a fly ball at short left field.
- 2:23:03Fancona coming in, Held back, Held going back. He's got it, a nice running play by Woody Held with his back to the plate and over the shoulder grab.
- 2:23:13Fancona could not have caught up to the ball.
- 2:23:16Fine play by Woody Held.
- 2:23:21And here's Jim Coates coming up to the plate.
- 2:23:39Coates was called out on strikes in the fourth inning.
- 2:23:48One out, nobody on and now Locke wants to talk with Romano.
- 2:23:59Coates talks with Frank Humott while they're huddling out on the mound.
- 2:24:11Now it's set to go.
- 2:24:18Here's the wind up.
- 2:24:20Fastball right down the middle, strike call.
- 2:24:23Coates leaned away from the pitch kind of expecting an inside pitch.
- 2:24:28But he didn't get it.
- 2:24:35There's one almost hit him and he jumps out of the way and it rolls back to the screen.
- 2:24:41One on one.
- 2:24:50And Frank Humott looking at the ball talking with Romano and warning Romano to warn his pitcher.
- 2:25:01Not to come too close to Mr. Coates.
- 2:25:08Let's Locke him so hard.
- 2:25:15Bobby takes out a handkerchief, mops his hands in his brow.
- 2:25:24Of course a pitcher can always claim that the ball slips out of his fingers on a hot day like this.
- 2:25:31All right here's the one-one pitch.
- 2:25:34Little bit low, ball two, two and one.
- 2:25:52Two-two pitch right down the middle, strike two.
- 2:25:55And they're merely making a bucket hitter out of Coates this time at that.
- 2:25:59He's stepping right toward third base on every pitch.
- 2:26:03Can't say as I blame him.
- 2:26:14Two-two pitch.
- 2:26:15He swings and misses strike three at a low curve ball.
- 2:26:21Strike out for Locke, it's two out.
- 2:26:23Here's Richardson who is two for two.
- 2:26:25He walks singled and doubled.
- 2:26:32Bobby now batting 273, 6'6 the score here in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:26:52Pitch to Richardson a foul at the plate, bounced on the ground, bounced up and hit Richardson.
- 2:26:58Strike.
- 2:27:04Curve is popped into short left field.
- 2:27:06Frank Conner makes the catch and he almost lost that ball.
- 2:27:10You could see the sun glistening on his glasses as he went after it.
- 2:27:14He flinched a little at the end but he caught it.
- 2:27:18So the Yankees get down in order in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:27:21Nothing across and at the end of sixth full inning.
- 2:27:24It's Cleveland six runs, ten hits, no errors, the Yankees six runs, eight hits and no errors.
- 2:27:32As we take a look at the scoreboard, in the American League at the end of sixth inning, it's Boston eight and Detroit three.
- 2:27:42Coplitz against Connelly, Bruton, Holman for Detroit, Yastrumsky with one on for the Red Sox.
- 2:27:47Baltimore three, Washington nothing at the end of seven and a half, Klipstein replaced McLean, Estrada for Baltimore, Grant and Brooks Robinson, Holman for Baltimore.
- 2:27:55Chicago at L.A. hasn't started. Minnesota, Kansas City in the first of two.
- 2:27:59The A's won the twins nothing at the end of two, Kralik against Bath.
- 2:28:03In the National League, Phillies won, Cubs won at the end of four and a half, Foresy against Cardwell, Talieson, Holman.
- 2:28:09Pittsburgh three, Milwaukee won at the end of five, Sturtevant against Fonz, Fonz going for number three oh seven.
- 2:28:16Cincinnati five and the Cardinals two at the end of sixth, the Dekke against Turkey, Post, Holman in the sixth with two on.
- 2:28:23As the Cardinals have tied the score in the top of the sixth with two runs, Post came back with a three run home.
- 2:28:29The Los Angeles at San Francisco, Williams against Lowe.
- 2:28:33Well, we're all set to go here in the top of the seventh of this tie ball game and ready to go.
- 2:28:39We'll carry the rest of the way, Mel Allen.
- 2:28:47Hello there everybody.
- 2:28:49We're ready now for the seventh inning.
- 2:28:51Tito Francona leading off for the Indians, Johnny Romano on deck and Willie Kirkland to follow.
- 2:28:58Foreside six-six. Jim Coates delivers. The pitch is in there for a call strike.
- 2:29:04Little off his fastball. Francona applied to right, single to right and double to left.
- 2:29:11The numbers three, four and five hitters in the order first up.
- 2:29:15Coates in relief for Ford, comes in now with another half-speed pitch which is outside.
- 2:29:21Ball on, one and one.
- 2:29:27One ball, one strike.
- 2:29:33Jim into the windup. Around comes the right arm.
- 2:29:35The pitch fastball swung on, lifted up into the air, stumbled in the Tiger Series,
- 2:29:41but still made a spectacular catch.
- 2:29:47Scratched his arm.
- 2:29:49Place where Bob Serb hurt himself earlier in the year.
- 2:29:55A little dip out there and you're running across a certain level of ground that foot just doesn't hit right.
- 2:30:02Johnny Romano swings at the first pitch, bounces at the short,
- 2:30:05Kubek up with his throws on to first in time.
- 2:30:11Two away.
- 2:30:14Now Willie Kirkland comes up, single to center, foul of a catcher and grounded to first.
- 2:30:24Six power coming out on deck.
- 2:30:27Indian six to Yankee, six at the seventh inning.
- 2:30:39Jim Coates into the windup. In comes the pitch to the left-hand batter.
- 2:30:42It's over. Strike one, nothing and one.
- 2:30:52Can't make a mistake with Willie.
- 2:30:56Hand the pitch over the outside corner. Strike two.
- 2:31:05Open stance. Good, solid, full hitter with power.
- 2:31:10Six all, seventh inning.
- 2:31:12Now the two-strike pitch fastball misses, low and away, one and two.
- 2:31:19One ball, two strikes.
- 2:31:34Jim into the windup and the pitch is in there.
- 2:31:38Foul, strike three.
- 2:31:40Caught him looking.
- 2:31:42Dives retired, no runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on.
- 2:31:47And at the end of six and a half innings, Indian six Yankee, six.
- 2:31:53On a warm summer day, there are a few things more pleasant than a cold golden glass of beer,
- 2:31:59especially when that beer is Valentine.
- 2:32:02Every sip you take is pure pleasure.
- 2:32:05You see, pleasure is the purpose of the crisp of pressure,
- 2:32:10and that's why over five million glasses of Valentine beer are enjoyed every day.
- 2:32:15Discover the crisp of pressure yourself.
- 2:32:19Your very first swallow and each one to follow proves that a beer can be light
- 2:32:24and still give you all the lager beer flavor you want.
- 2:32:29This sunny mellow flavor is what makes Valentine beer the crisp of pressure.
- 2:32:34So friends, if you drink beer for taste and refreshment and pleasure,
- 2:32:39then Valentine is the beer for you.
- 2:32:41Try it. See for yourself why Valentine is the most popular beer from Maine to Florida.
- 2:32:48Pure pleasure, pure of the crisp of pressure, real soon.
- 2:32:56In the last half of the seventh inning, Tony Kubeck will be leading off,
- 2:33:01Roger Maris on deck, and Mickey Mantle to follow.
- 2:33:06For any late tuners in, the Indians scored two in the first off-fords.
- 2:33:11After the Yankees have knocked out Barry Lattmann with a six-run attack in the second,
- 2:33:16including a home run by Johnny Blanchard following Mantle's lead off-triple,
- 2:33:26the Indians knocked out Ford in the third, and Vic Power hit a three-run homer off-coach to tie the score.
- 2:33:48Kubeck rounded the second into a double play, double to right and flying to left.
- 2:33:55Bobby Locke, who has been in there since the second inning with two outs and a leap of Lattmann,
- 2:34:01into the windup, the pitch is high and away, ball one.
- 2:34:20The right hander to the windup, and the next pitch flung onto high fly ball into left center.
- 2:34:26Jimmy Pearsall gets under it and has one away.
- 2:34:33Now Roger Maris, fly to right, swing to the left, and walk.
- 2:34:52The last time up Maris just missed a homer.
- 2:34:57Bobby Locke won the third deck foul a little bit. Pitch is way high, ball one.
- 2:35:10One ball, no strikes.
- 2:35:19Bobby Locke to the windup, the pitch, and Maris swings and lifts a high, high foul.
- 2:35:27Vic Power comes in for, and he has it.
- 2:35:31Two downs.
- 2:35:35Now coming up is Mickey Mantle, who tripled in the second inning,
- 2:35:41and walked all in the same inning, and then grounded the second and the fourth, batting 325.
- 2:35:49Indian six Yankees, six step and pinning.
- 2:35:57Mantle wants Frank Humont to flick the ball over.
- 2:36:05He saves it in the game.
- 2:36:19Locke to the windup, and the pitch is high and away, ball one.
- 2:36:25One ball, no strikes.
- 2:36:32Locke ready, two downs, seven pinning, six, six.
- 2:36:36End of the windup, and the pitch is high outside, ball two, two and nothing.
- 2:37:00No strikes.
- 2:37:02Now the pitch, change up is high, ball three, three and nothing.
- 2:37:10Mantle looks at Krasetti, he's got a green light.
- 2:37:15Guaranteed he's not going to get one down the middle anyway.
- 2:37:24Two balls, no strikes, two outs, six, six, seven pinning.
- 2:37:36Locke ready, end of the windup, and the three nothing pitch is high for ball four.
- 2:37:42Second time, Mantle's walk.
- 2:37:50The key gets to walk, his second of the game and 118 in the season.
- 2:37:58Now Johnny Blanchard, hit a home run in the second inning,
- 2:38:02flying to center all in the same inning.
- 2:38:05Struck out in the fifth after he too almost had a second home run.
- 2:38:12Barely fouled in the upper deck.
- 2:38:14Six, six, seven pinning.
- 2:38:21Bobby Locke to the stretch.
- 2:38:25And time has been called.
- 2:38:30And somebody takes a swing at Pierce Hall, two men take a swing at Pierce Hall and he goes after them.
- 2:38:36And the police are after them, and the Indian ball crowd is after them.
- 2:38:41Two kids went out and took a swing at Pierce Hall and the whole Indian ball club,
- 2:38:46and the police are out there and they got them.
- 2:38:50Jimmy started up around them and they got them.
- 2:38:54Two ran out onto the field and suddenly started swinging.
- 2:38:58Jimmy dropped one, one after the other, and the Indian ball club got out there in a hurry.
- 2:39:04And a dozen or more police got right out there.
- 2:39:09And Mickey Mantle is one that's out there.
- 2:39:14Mickey went out too.
- 2:39:17And now the cops have both of the offenders and a hustle out of the ballpark.
- 2:39:26And Mantle was out there long at the city.
- 2:39:49Now I think some one of the two, have we got any field glasses here?
- 2:40:01I think Pierce Hall may have suffered some abrasion.
- 2:40:10Wally Bachman is going out, but Jimmy is surrounded.
- 2:40:18What an offensive thing.
- 2:40:22And Jimmy gets a hand.
- 2:40:25God bless him.
- 2:40:37I'll tell you this, I'd hate to be those two fellows.
- 2:40:43It must have been three quarters, the Indian ball club finally got down top of them,
- 2:40:48and Mantle and Presetti got out there.
- 2:40:54They'll fight one another on the field of play, but don't let anybody like that come out,
- 2:40:59because then they gang up on them.
- 2:41:02Jimmy is staying in.
- 2:41:26Jimmy just lost his father, you know, this past week.
- 2:41:34You knew that this had to happen some day, something like that.
- 2:41:44Not only just to Jimmy, but to anybody with people running on the field.
- 2:41:50As stiff as is a pine, and the jail term, it will probably be made even stiffer.
- 2:42:08Just all of a sudden, I would say they must have, they look to me like about,
- 2:42:16over 100 yards away, I'd say somewhere around 21 to 25 years old.
- 2:42:26And Jimmy took them both on, but he didn't have too long.
- 2:42:30The Indian bullpen emptied, they came out of the dugout,
- 2:42:34and Mantle was on first base, raced out, and Presetti came over from third base.
- 2:42:49Well, it's been a wild day, but you just can't win unless the players play their game.
- 2:43:00There's Johnny Blanchard up, two down, Mantle on first, and the pitch.
- 2:43:06Plung on, foul back upstairs, strike one, nothing in one.
- 2:43:24And there's still fussing over that incident.
- 2:43:30Why, I don't know. Why it happened.
- 2:43:36No balls, one strike.
- 2:43:40Bobby Lock ready, and the pitch, way outside, almost a wild pitch, one and one.
- 2:43:53One and one count on Blanchard.
- 2:44:06Boy, the stadium police move faster than ever.
- 2:44:09Dominators came out of everywhere.
- 2:44:12But over the first, almost a wild one, thick power jumps up to grab it.
- 2:44:17Mantle was standing on the bag.
- 2:44:20Six all, seven sending with two out.
- 2:44:23Bobby Lock ready, and the pitch, plung on, there's the drive, the deep right center,
- 2:44:29and that ball is going to be caught by Pearsall.
- 2:44:34He took a home run away from Blanchard.
- 2:44:37How about that? He leaped up and took a home run away.
- 2:44:43Listen to hand for Jimmy.
- 2:45:06Jimmy Pearsall went all the way over in front of the Yankee bullpen, leaped high in the air,
- 2:45:13and took a home run away from Johnny Blanchard.
- 2:45:16And the side is retired.
- 2:45:19No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left off at the end of seven innings.
- 2:45:27Cleveland, six runs, ten hits, no errors, the Yankees, six runs, eight hits, and no errors.
- 2:45:35Wow, Jimmy really climaxed the inning after two people had assaulted him.
- 2:45:47He just committed highway robbery, which is legal on a ball field.
- 2:45:52We pause for safe identification.
- 2:46:00Good sound broadcasting for 1961.
- 2:46:03Equality Modern, WOKO, Albany, New York, your Yankee baseball station.
- 2:46:08The time, 29 minutes past 4 p.m.
- 2:46:19The Boston Red Sox lead the Detroit Tigers 8-4 at the end of six and a half innings.
- 2:46:26Baltimore 3, Washington nothing, at the end of eight.
- 2:46:32Kansas City one, Minnesota nothing, at the end of two and a half.
- 2:46:35National League, Chicago six, Philadelphia one, end of six.
- 2:46:39Pittsburgh three, Milwaukee one, end of six.
- 2:46:43Cincinnati five, St. Louis two, at the end of six and a half.
- 2:46:47Los Angeles nothing, San Francisco batting in the first inning.
- 2:46:52Now to the eighth, Sixall and the sixth power.
- 2:46:57The coach for the windup and the pitch is swung on line out into right center for a base hit.
- 2:47:03Marist takes it on a hop and tosses back into Richardson.
- 2:47:08Power double to left, did a free run homer off coach in the third.
- 2:47:12Was hit by a pitch ball in the fifth.
- 2:47:15Opens the eighth with a single to right.
- 2:47:19That brings up what he held with Mike Delahose on deck.
- 2:47:34Jim Coates in relief for Whitey Ford.
- 2:47:37Checks the runner.
- 2:47:39And held, started to bunt and takes it for a strike.
- 2:47:53No ball, one strike.
- 2:48:00Boyer shortened up a third.
- 2:48:04Jim Coates tosses easily over to first.
- 2:48:15Time has been called.
- 2:48:19That's four by held, now he's back in.
- 2:48:23Coates again with a stretch.
- 2:48:26And the pitch, swung on and missed, strike two, a switch.
- 2:48:34No ball, two strikes.
- 2:48:50Coach Reddy, now the pitch and it's outside, ball one, one and two.
- 2:48:56A lead up curve just off the plate.
- 2:49:05One ball, two strikes.
- 2:49:11Power leading away, throw over, he's back.
- 2:49:22Jim Coates into the stretch.
- 2:49:24Here's the pitch, swung on, that's a high pop-up out back of second.
- 2:49:29Richardson backs up, still goes back under it and has it.
- 2:49:34One down.
- 2:49:37And the batter is Mike Delahose.
- 2:49:40He's in the center, single to center, and grounded to third into a double play.
- 2:49:53The bullpen is busy, goes to Yankee bullpen.
- 2:50:10Throw over to first and power is back.
- 2:50:24The pitch is high for a ball, one ball, no strikes.
- 2:50:43And the delivery inside, ball two, two balls, no strikes.
- 2:50:56A 2-0 count.
- 2:51:02Bobby Lock, the next scheduled batter, whether he bats or not may depend on what Delahose does.
- 2:51:11Here's the pitch, swung on and fouled off to the right of the plate, out of play, two and one.
- 2:51:32Two balls, one strike, six-six, eighth inning, one on and one out for the Indians.
- 2:51:38Delahose, the right-hand batter, power moves off first.
- 2:51:42Here's the pitch, swung on, there's a looping pop that will be taken by Maris in short right.
- 2:51:49Power retreats to first.
- 2:51:53Delahose lifts a pop-up in the very short right.
- 2:51:58And now we look toward the Indian bench and Bobby Lock is coming out.
- 2:52:05He has done a fine job in relief for Blanton.
- 2:52:19In fact, Lock has just given up two hits.
- 2:52:28Came on in the second inning with two outs, gave up one hit then and gave up one hit in the fourth, and that's all.
- 2:52:37Grounded to short and first.
- 2:52:41The delivery, swung on and missed, strike one.
- 2:52:51Johnny Temple is on deck.
- 2:52:54Another six-six ball game as we play in the first of the eighth.
- 2:52:58Sixth power on first base.
- 2:53:02Stretched by Jim Coates and the pitch, swung on, bounced over the head of the pitcher, out over second, into center, fourth base hit.
- 2:53:09And that's only Lock's fourth base hit of the season.
- 2:53:16He had three hits this season and he bounces one through the middle.
- 2:53:22And that may be a key base hit with Johnny Temple coming up.
- 2:53:43Here's Johnny Temple, double to right center, take a third strike, walks and fly to right.
- 2:53:52Runners on first and second, two down.
- 2:53:55The pitch to Temple, swung on, hit sharply to short, two back up with it, clips on to Richardson for the fourth out at second, a block.
- 2:54:04The side's retired.
- 2:54:07No runs, two hits, no errors, two men left on.
- 2:54:10Seven and a half innings, Cleveland six, New York six.
- 2:54:15Ooh, to be crisp, a beer must be icily light, ooh, icily light, with true Lager flavor, precisely right, ooh, precisely right, lively golden, crispily clear, the crisp refreshers,
- 2:54:43Valentine, Valentine, beer.
- 2:54:47Pleasure is the purpose of the crisp refresher.
- 2:54:50Your first swallow and everyone to follow is light and crisp and golden.
- 2:54:55So pour pleasure, pour today's Valentine.
- 2:54:58So clap your hands, clap your feet, snap your fingers, and that's the man for Valentine, the crisp refresher, Valentine, Valentine, beer.
- 2:55:16Since 1840, America's finest.
- 2:55:35It's the last half of eighth inning.
- 2:55:39Nelson Howard first up for New York, Bill Scaron on deck, and please, for you to follow.
- 2:55:51Court tied at 6-6, and if anyone just tuned in or just got in the car driving along, no M&M homers. Big power, hit a three-run homer.
- 2:56:10Johnny Blanchard hit a two-run homer.
- 2:56:14John Howard, nothing for three. Bobby Locke's delivery, low outside, ball one. Howard struck out, grounded to third and short, hitting 3.59.
- 2:56:39Chapman and Ford were the starters.
- 2:56:46Locke, the right-hander, into the windup, and the pitch is low again, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:57:13Now the 2-0 pitch, right in there, 2-1.
- 2:57:30Next delivery, swung on, there's a fly ball down the right field line going foul out of play.
- 2:57:41A 2-2 count.
- 2:58:052-2 pitch, swung on, hits out back through the middle for a base hit.
- 2:58:11Dersall up for the ball, tossing it back in.
- 2:58:15Nelson Howard, single to the center of the opening, penning for New York.
- 2:58:21Yankees second hit since the second inning. They got all their runs and seven of their eight hits in the second inning.
- 2:58:35They got one hit in the fourth and now one in the eighth.
- 2:58:39Bill Scaron, double to right center, hits to the box and grounded to third.
- 2:58:48Bobby Locke into the stretch and the pitch, high and inside, ball one.
- 2:58:58Ellie has this safely in his last eight games.
- 2:59:046-0, eighth inning.
- 2:59:10Locke throws a lot of stinkers, that's what he'd be going up there to moot.
- 2:59:16He's ready and the pitch is inside, ball two.
- 2:59:22Two balls, no strikes and now out of the back out comes Jimmy Dyches.
- 2:59:28He may figure, we'll see what he figures.
- 2:59:32He may figure Bobby who has pitched brilliantly on this hot day since the third inning with two outs,
- 2:59:47or rather the second inning with two outs, may be tiring but we'll see.
- 2:59:53He just signaled his bullpen a little bit ago to see if whoever was warming up out there was ready.
- 3:00:03Got it signaled back. So he's going to call someone in.
- 3:00:09Bobby Locke turned down a great job in relief.
- 3:00:27Pitching five in a third inning.
- 3:00:32Nobody out in the eighth.
- 3:00:37Three hits.
- 3:00:48Walked three men and struck out four.
- 3:00:57And I believe that's Frank Funk coming in.
- 3:01:12Locke and Jimmy Dyches judgment just simply has begun to tire.
- 3:01:21Will Frank Funk will be coming in.
- 3:01:32And with a two-nothing count on Scowran, in the event he should walk,
- 3:01:41that walk would be charged to the outgoing pitcher Locke.
- 3:01:49Whatever else happens is charged to Funk. A hand now for Bobby Locke.
- 3:02:17Frank Funk will be making his 54th appearance and his third in this series.
- 3:02:22And has a record of 11 and 10. Yesterday was charged with a defeat.
- 3:02:51The Yankees will next be home in the last week of the season for the Orioles and the Red Sox.
- 3:03:09The Red Sox lead the Tigers 8-4 in their seven innings and Baltimore defeated Washington 3-2,
- 3:03:16saving off a center-to-ninth inning rally of two runs.
- 3:03:24All right. We're ready to continue.
- 3:03:29Frank Funk has a good assortment of fast balls, curve balls, change of pace, end of the stretch.
- 3:03:40And a pitch. Swung on a high foul beyond first and the ball is going to be out of play.
- 3:03:47Two and one.
- 3:03:55There was a spot where a batter had his mind made up to be swinging.
- 3:03:59He figured with the count two and nothing, the pitcher is going to have to get the ball in the strike zone.
- 3:04:06Two and one now.
- 3:04:13The right hand earned in the stretch. Howard moves off first.
- 3:04:19Here's the pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike two. Counted him with a fast ball.
- 3:04:41Two balls, two strikes. The right hand are ready. And the pitch. Swung on.
- 3:04:49Little roller hits toward third. Delahoe is up with his place at the first base in time.
- 3:04:55Howard advancing to second.
- 3:05:00A slow roller to third. And Berra had started out of the dugout to hit for Boyer.
- 3:05:09Went right back in. Maybe he went to get another bat.
- 3:05:15It's going to be Hector Lopez.
- 3:05:33I think Ralph Howard quickly figured what could happen anyway if Lopez does nothing.
- 3:05:45If you put Berra up with first base open and walking.
- 3:05:55So rather than just lose a man, sending up Hector Lopez to hit for Boyer.
- 3:06:11Now they have to pitch to Lopez.
- 3:06:20Yankee bullpen is busy and if Lopez doesn't do anything, they may send Yogi up to hit for Coates anyway.
- 3:06:30I think he's still walking and going to do. But here's Lopez up with one away. Six all, eight sending. And the pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike one. Nothing and one.
- 3:06:59Strike bunk all set. And the pitch. Swung on and fouled off to the right of the plate out of play.
- 3:07:18No balls. Two strikes.
- 3:07:30One away in the eighth sending. Six all.
- 3:07:39Howard on second. One out. The right hander to the stretch and we're ready for the two strike pitch. Here it is. Swung on and missed. Strike three.
- 3:07:53So Hector Lopez strikes out. Now Bob Serbs going to come up and bat for Coates.
- 3:08:10Bob Serbs heading 222.
- 3:08:32Johnny Romano out to talk to Frank Funk.
- 3:09:01We're all set. The pitch to serve is inside ball one. Bobby Richardson on deck.
- 3:09:19Elston Howard on second with two down in the eighth sending.
- 3:09:30The Cleveland right hander is set. Checking the runner. And the pitch. Sailing high inside for ball two.
- 3:09:58Two balls, no strikes. Howard moves off second. Here's the pitch and it's right over. Strike one. Two and one.
- 3:10:20Here's the two one pitch to Big Bob. Here it is. Swung on, lined to left field for a face hit. Here comes Howard on third and comes on in to score.
- 3:10:32On a single left by Bob Serbs.
- 3:10:40And Billy Gargile going to run for serve.
- 3:10:48Serves singles home Elston Howard to make it seven to six New York. Serves 34th run batted in.
- 3:10:58And Billy Gardner goes in to run for serve.
- 3:11:11Bobby Richardson steps up, threw a walk. Singles. Doubled and climbed to left.
- 3:11:24Now the pitch. Swung on, popped up in the air behind the plate. Romano comes back toward the screen. It's out of play.
- 3:11:32And you know what? The ball just missed the screen and Romano misjudged it.
- 3:11:40He gave up. He's thinking the ball's going to land on the netting and it just was inches short of it.
- 3:11:58No ball, one strike.
- 3:12:10Frank Funk into the stretch.
- 3:12:15The right hander's pitch is swung on, bounced to short. Held up with it, flips it on to Temple for the force out of Gardner.
- 3:12:24And the side is retired. One run, two hits, no errors, and one left on.
- 3:12:31And Luis Arroyo's coming on to the bullpen. At the end of eight innings, New York seven runs, ten hits, no errors.
- 3:12:39Six left on. Cleveland six runs. Twelve hits, no errors. And seven men left on base.
- 3:12:52Outdoors are in, summertime. It's a time to work up a thirst. And when that happens, it's time for Ballantine.
- 3:12:59Time to take along a six pack of Ballantine beer. You'll refresh with a crisp refresher.
- 3:13:11Arroyo coming on, and while he does, we look at the scoreboard.
- 3:13:16Sniggers got another run in the eighth inning. And at the end of seven and a half, it's Boston eight, Detroit five,
- 3:13:23Cornelius, Bocahnly in the eighth, Mossy Darver destroyed, Coppola and Salien relieved,
- 3:13:29Homer's, Bruton, and Jasperski. Baltimore beat Washington three to two. Estrada beat McLean.
- 3:13:37Brant and Brooks Robinson homering. Angels won, the White Sox nothing, down to the first inning, spring against Pizarro.
- 3:13:46But in the second inning, Smith and Landis have homered for the White Sox to make at least two to one.
- 3:13:52Lee Thomas homered for the Angels in the first. Kansas City five, Minnesota nothing in the four, Bass against Pralik.
- 3:14:01Dottir relieved Pralik in the third. National League, Chicago six, Philadelphia one, end of six, Cardwell started for the Cubs.
- 3:14:12Joseph Anderson relieved in the seventh. Roberts for Philadelphia, Faresi in the fifth.
- 3:14:17Callison and Demeter have homered. Demeter, a grand slammer in the seventh inning for the Fills, so it's at least now six-five.
- 3:14:25Pittsburgh three, Milwaukee two, end of seven, Sturtivant against Spahn. Spahn homered in the seventh.
- 3:14:31Cincinnati beat St. Louis five to two. Bob Perky beat Sadecki. Post, Homer with two on.
- 3:14:38And San Francisco leads Los Angeles two to nothing, end of two, Lowes against Williams.
- 3:14:49Now to the ninth inning. Jimmy Peresol leads off.
- 3:14:56Luis Torollo to the windup and the pitch swung on, hits to short.
- 3:15:01Kubek's up with it, throws on to Scarron, one away.
- 3:15:07Jimmy had had one for four, a double, and he took a two-run home run away from Blanchard.
- 3:15:16Here's Tito Francona, who's at two for four.
- 3:15:21Arroyo making his 58th appearance, a record of 14-3.
- 3:15:28Billy Gardner, of course, has taken over third base for Boyer.
- 3:15:37Tito in there for a strike. Johnny Romano on deck.
- 3:15:47Now for delivery. Curve ball outside, ball one, one and one.
- 3:15:53Jim Coates, whom Arroyo relieved, came on the third, nobody out.
- 3:16:00Hit six innings, allowed five hits. Was charged with one run, but one hit he gave up was a three-run Homer. Two of the men put on the board.
- 3:16:09Next delivery, outside, ball two, two and one.
- 3:16:29Two-one pitch, way outside, ball three, three and one.
- 3:16:47Now the delivery, swung on and fouled back, strike two, full count.
- 3:17:13Now the three-two pitch, swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 3:17:36Once again the wind up and the three-two pitch, swung on, fouled off, again out of play, back to third in the upper deck.
- 3:17:50Ninth inning, one out. Gardner guarding that third baseline. Kubek way over near a second.
- 3:18:07Once again Louis goes for the wind up and the pitch, swung on, it's a high pop into very short left, Kubek dancing out and makes the catch.
- 3:18:20So there are two away and the banner of Johnny Romano with Willie Kirkland on deck.
- 3:18:32Romano single to left, single to center, struck out, grounded to short, driven in two runs.
- 3:18:44Heading 299. Here's the pitch on the way, swung on, a high, high pop foul.
- 3:18:55He's forward moving toward it, 100 and has it and the ball game is over.
- 3:19:02No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left on and the Yankees won their 11th straight game.
- 3:19:127-6. We'll have the totals in just a moment.
