- 0:30Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents, a
- 0:33folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:36story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:40Today we are back in the book of Georgian folklore written down
- 0:42by Marjorie Wardrobe. This is a tale that echoes
- 0:46previous Armenian and Turkish tales.
- 0:49No surprise there. Where the hero has to go down a
- 0:53hole, Pick out three brides. The three brides get taken away
- 0:57from him. He goes on more adventures and
- 0:59more adventures. There's Dragons, there's all
- 1:02sorts of stuff. So let's just get going.
- 1:06OK, Let's begin. Ashpertzella.
- 1:12There was and there wasn't of God's best.
- 1:16May it be there was. Once a woman, this woman's
- 1:21husband, had died young and left her with four little children,
- 1:24three boys and one girl. When the children were grown,
- 1:29their mother said, Children, why don't you look after your
- 1:32father's house? Why do you abandon it?
- 1:36The children did not know anything about the house, and
- 1:39they asked their mother where it was.
- 1:42The mother told them that it was neither here nor there, but the
- 1:45children would have to go a long way to get to it.
- 1:49They asked their mother, since it is far away, when we go to
- 1:53work, who will bring us our food and drink.
- 1:56Mom replied I will send your sister with dinner.
- 2:01The brothers were pleased with their mother's proposal and got
- 2:04ready to go. Their mother gave them onions
- 2:07and garlic to take with them and said as you go along, cut off
- 2:11the skins and drop them. Your sister will follow your
- 2:14trail and bring you your food. The brothers went to work and on
- 2:19the path they threw down the skins like their mother had
- 2:22said. 100 headed Devi lived near the path.
- 2:27The Devi's mother saw the onion peels thrown on the path,
- 2:30collected them all and put them on the road leading to her own
- 2:33house. Three days later, the mother
- 2:37thought that they must be low on food by now.
- 2:41She made more for them, put it in a bag and gave it to her
- 2:43daughter. The girl set out and followed
- 2:47the onion peels. She went on and on and came to a
- 2:51house. There was an old woman sitting
- 2:54in the house. The girl cried out.
- 2:57Mother, mother, can you tell me if my brothers are working here?
- 3:02What do you want with your brothers?
- 3:05Said the old woman. This is the House of the Devi
- 3:08with 100 heads. He will be home soon, so I had
- 3:13better hide you, for if he sees you he will eat you.
- 3:20The Devi's mother took the maiden and hit her.
- 3:23The Devi appeared out of nowhere.
- 3:25He carried meat and firewood. He set down his goods from his
- 3:29back, went in and said, Mommy, I smell a man who is here.
- 3:37Why do you ask? Said the old woman.
- 3:41Fear of you keeps the birds out of heaven and the worms from
- 3:44crawling on earth. The Devi insisted, and his
- 3:49mother at last gave in and said, I have a young lady here for
- 3:54you. I would like you to marry her.
- 3:57If you promise not to eat her, I will show her to you.
- 4:03The son promised and the mother brought out the girl.
- 4:07When the Devi saw her, he liked her very much and did not want
- 4:10to eat her. Meanwhile the brothers waited
- 4:14and waited for their sister, and when she did not come they got
- 4:18up and went home. They said sharply to their
- 4:22mother, Where is our dinner you promised us?
- 4:27When the mother heard them say this, she began to weep and
- 4:30said, Near the road dwells 100 headed Devi, and I fear that he
- 4:36curse his head has eaten her. The brothers did not know about
- 4:43this Devi and when they heard about him, they stood up and set
- 4:46off to save their sister. When they had walked a long way,
- 4:50they approached the House of the Devi.
- 4:53At that time their sister and the Devi's mother were sitting
- 4:55on the roof. The Devi's mother saw them
- 4:58coming in the distance and said to their daughter-in-law, Look,
- 5:02don't you see something coming? Her daughter-in-law replied, I
- 5:09see something like a swarm of flies.
- 5:13Woe to their mother and to my son's mother, said the Debbie's
- 5:18mother. And a little while later she
- 5:20asked her again. The Debbie's wife answered, I
- 5:24see three men. Woe to their mother and to my
- 5:28son's mother, moaned the old woman.
- 5:32The three brothers finally arrived at the Debbie's house.
- 5:35They saw some water, but they could not cross it by any means.
- 5:40They dropped big stones into the water and then crossed it.
- 5:44Then the girl saw that they were her brothers and she came down
- 5:47and embraced them. When the Debbie's mother learned
- 5:51who they were, she took them in, gave them food and then hid
- 5:54them, saying If my son comes home and sees you, he will eat
- 5:59you. Then the 100 headed Debbie came
- 6:04appearing out of nowhere. On one shoulder he had firewood
- 6:10and on the other some deer. At the door he set down his
- 6:13goods and then he came in and said, I smell a man who is here.
- 6:21His mother tried to hide the truth, but her son would not
- 6:24leave her alone. So at last she said, If you
- 6:28promise not to eat your wife's brothers, I shall show them to
- 6:31you. The Devi promised and the old
- 6:34woman brought in three brothers. A little while after the Devi
- 6:39said to his wife's brothers, Come, let us make dinner.
- 6:45They all came and began to skin the game the Devi had brought.
- 6:49While the three brothers skinned 1 stag, the Devi skinned 60, cut
- 6:53them up and threw them into the pot.
- 6:56Then he came, seized the stag his brothers in law were
- 6:59skinning and threw it into the pot too.
- 7:03When they sat down to eat, the Devi asked his wife's brothers,
- 7:06Do you like meat or the bone? They answered, We have no need
- 7:13for meat, bones are good enough for us.
- 7:16The Devi filled his mouth, tore off the flesh and threw the
- 7:20bones to the three brothers. Then he asked, Will you drink
- 7:26out of a Methuselah or out of a split from a split?
- 7:31Replied the brothers. The Devi poured out the
- 7:34Methuselah of wine for himself while he filled a split for
- 7:37them. When they had finished eating
- 7:41and were getting ready for bed, the Devi asked, Do you wish to
- 7:45sleep in a bed or in the stable? What have we to do with the bed?
- 7:51Put us in the stable, said the brothers.
- 7:54The Devi lay down in his bed and the brothers slept in the
- 7:57stable. In the morning, when the Devi
- 8:00woke up, he said to his mother, Mammy, I am hungry.
- 8:07The mother saw his meaning, and not wishing to let her
- 8:09daughter-in-law understand, she thus replied, Go on to the
- 8:13stable. There in the bread box are three
- 8:16badly cooked loaves. Take them and eat them.
- 8:22The Devi went to the stable where the brothers lay.
- 8:25He swallowed one of them in the doorway, put the other two in
- 8:28his pocket, and went into the woods.
- 8:32That's the end of Part 1. Now for Part 2.
- 8:53In the meantime, the mother of the brothers waited and waited.
- 8:58And when they did not come back, she thought the Devi must have
- 9:01eaten my sons. She wept bitterly.
- 9:05Her tears flowed until they reached heaven.
- 9:09At that moment a man was passing by.
- 9:12He asked her the cause of the tears and the woman told him
- 9:15that they were for the loss of her children.
- 9:18Then the man gave her an apple and said, Cut this apple into
- 9:22100 pieces and every day eat 3. When the apple is finished, you
- 9:28shall have a son and you shall call him Ashpertzella.
- 9:33The woman did as he said. She cut the apple into 100
- 9:36pieces and every day ate 3. When the apple was finished, she
- 9:41had a son and called him Ashpertzella.
- 9:45Ashpertzella grew in a day as much as other children grow in a
- 9:49year. Once, when a toddler,
- 9:52Ashpertzella was playing with other boys, and a woman passed
- 9:55by with a jug full of water on her shoulder.
- 9:59Just then, Ashpertzella threw his knuckle bone, which he had
- 10:02been using to play dice. It whirled through the air,
- 10:06struck the woman's jar and broke it.
- 10:09The woman was angry and called out, May you be cursed.
- 10:13But how can I curse you only, child, for this trick?
- 10:18May your brothers and sisters never be delivered from the
- 10:20claws of the Devi. Ashpertzella did not understand
- 10:24this. He ran inside and said to his
- 10:26mother, Let me nurse, mother, wait a moment, said his mother.
- 10:32But the boy would not wait, so his mother gave him his wish.
- 10:37Then Ashperzilla bit his mother's breast and said, Show
- 10:41me mother, do I have any brothers?
- 10:45His mother didn't want him to know, but she was in such pain
- 10:49that she told him everything. When Ashperzilla heard her tail,
- 10:54he prepared to go. His mother begged him not to
- 10:57leave, but the boy would not be persuaded, and out he set.
- 11:02He wandered near and far and came to an open field where he
- 11:05saw men plowing the ground. He shouted to them, Watch out,
- 11:11100 headed Devi is coming. The men were filled with terror
- 11:15and ran away. Ashpertzilla slung the plow over
- 11:19his back, took it to a Smith and said, Make me some shoes and a
- 11:23bow and arrow. The Smith did so.
- 11:28Ashpertzella put on the iron shoes, took the bow and arrow
- 11:31and went in search of the 100 headed Devi.
- 11:35He approached the Devi's house. At that time the Devi's mother
- 11:39was sitting on the roof and seeing someone coming.
- 11:41She said to her daughter-in-law. Do you see anyone or am I seeing
- 11:47things? When her daughter-in-law assured
- 11:50her that it was someone, the Devi's mother moaned.
- 11:55Woe to his mother's breast, and woe to my son's mother's breast.
- 12:00In the meantime, Ashpertzella leaped over the stream and came
- 12:04to the door. He saw a young girl and said,
- 12:08Surely you are my sister. The girl only knew her three
- 12:11brothers, but when Ashpertzella told her his tale, she believed
- 12:15him. Then the Devi's mother came and
- 12:18said, Come child, I will hide you so my son doesn't eat you
- 12:23when he comes home. You go hide dog of an old woman.
- 12:28May God bring you and your son Shame, said Ashpertsella and he
- 12:32waited impatiently for the Devi. Just then the Devi appeared with
- 12:37carcasses slung over his shoulder and tree stumps thrust
- 12:41under his arm. When he saw a strange boy boldly
- 12:45standing in front of his house, he said to himself, I scare
- 12:48birds out of the sky and worms off the ground.
- 12:52Who can this boy walking around my yard be?
- 12:56The Devi was furious. Flames shot out from his eyes.
- 13:01He cast an angry glance at him and shouted out Who are you and
- 13:05what are you doing here? Want to know who I am?
- 13:09I'm your wife's brother. I have come to be your guest, so
- 13:12you must be my host, said Ashpertzela.
- 13:15Very well, replied the Devi. Come in and let's make dinner.
- 13:19We must skin the game and cook it.
- 13:22They began to skin the game, but by the time the Devi had skinned
- 13:25one beast, Ashpertzella had finished all the game, thrown it
- 13:28into a pot, cooked it. The Devi gazed on Ashpertzella
- 13:33with real astonishment. When the food was cooked and
- 13:36they sat down to supper, the Devi, according to his custom
- 13:39asked the guest, Do you like meat or the bones?
- 13:45Pass me the meat. Why should I eat bones?
- 13:48Am IA dog, Answered Ashpertzella.
- 13:51The Devi gave him the meat and asked, will you drink a
- 13:55Methuselah or out of a split Passover the Methuselah, why
- 14:00would I want a split? The Devi gave him the Methuselah
- 14:04and sank into deep thought. When it was time to go to bed,
- 14:08the Devi asked, will you sleep in the stables or in a bed?
- 14:14I am a man, what should I do in the stable?
- 14:17Give me a bed, said Ashpertzella.
- 14:20So Ashpertzela slept in the bed and the Devi lay down in the
- 14:23stable. He lay down, but alas, sleep
- 14:27would not come. His only thought was how he
- 14:31could get rid of this terrible guest.
- 14:34When he thought that our hero must be asleep, he took a huge
- 14:37sword and began to sharpen it. The noise of the sharpening
- 14:42awoke Ashpertzela and, guessing the Devi's plan, jumped out of
- 14:45bed and put a log under the blanket.
- 14:48Then he hid in the room. When the Devi had made the sword
- 14:52as bright as a diamond, he snuck out quietly, opened the door and
- 14:56went silently towards Ashpertzela's bed.
- 14:59He raised the sword with all his might and hit the bed with such
- 15:03force that all the dust flew up and that log was cut down the
- 15:07middle. Then the Devi left and closed
- 15:10the door. Ashpertzela lay down and slept
- 15:14peacefully. In the morning when the Devi
- 15:17awoke and saw his brother-in-law, he looked at him
- 15:19in amazement and said, did you feel any pain last night?
- 15:25Oh no, said Ashpertzela, not even a flea bite?
- 15:31No, then let's wrestle. Very well, said Ashpertzela and
- 15:37the combat began. The Devi struggled and
- 15:42struggled, but he could not move his brother-in-law.
- 15:46Then Ashperzilla attacked him and buried him in the ground up
- 15:48to his neck. He took out his bow and arrow,
- 15:51aimed it at the Devi and cried out.
- 15:54Tell me quickly what you have done with my brothers, or I
- 15:58shall shoot you. The Devi was afraid and said
- 16:02Don't kill me, I will tell you. In my chest there is a little
- 16:07tin. They are lying in it dead.
- 16:10There is also a handkerchief. Put them on it and they will
- 16:14come back to life. When Ashpertzela heard this, he
- 16:19cut open the Devi's chest, took out the tin, took out his
- 16:22brothers and put the handkerchief on them and they
- 16:25came back to life. Then he shot his arrow at the
- 16:28100 head of Devi and killed him. When he had cut him up into
- 16:32small pieces, he went to the Devi's mother and killed her
- 16:34too. Then he listened to his
- 16:37brother's story and told them his.
- 16:38In return, the brothers believed Ashpertzela, but they were
- 16:43jealous of his bravery. At last they all went home.
- 16:48On the way, they had to pass through an open field with a
- 16:51tree so large that all of the field was in its shade.
- 16:55Ashpertzella said to his brothers and sister.
- 16:58Let's rest here. I'm very tired.
- 17:00I want to rest my eyes. They all agreed.
- 17:05Ashpertzella lay down at the foot of the tree and slept like
- 17:08the dead. His brother sat down near him
- 17:11and began to whisper to one another.
- 17:14Now that he has killed the 100 headed Devi, what good is he?
- 17:18Let's tie him up to this tree and leave him.
- 17:22They took ropes, twisted them round and round and bound him to
- 17:25the tree. When his sister saw this, she
- 17:29begged them to spare him, but they would not listen to her.
- 17:33They bound him tight, grabbed their sister, and went home.
- 17:37As soon as they were home, the sister told the mother
- 17:40everything. The mother called down curses on
- 17:43her three sons. When Ashperzilla woke up and saw
- 17:47that he was tied to a tree, he tried hard to get away, but he
- 17:50could not move. He looked around and saw that
- 17:53his brothers were gone. He looked everywhere, and then
- 17:57he prayed to God. Oh God, if I have deceived my
- 18:01brothers, may this tree fall on me.
- 18:04But if they have deceived me, may I pull it up by its roots?
- 18:09When he had said this, he tried again, and the tree came up by
- 18:12the roots. Then Ashperzella got up and went
- 18:16home, carrying the tree with him.
- 18:19He came to the house and called to his brothers.
- 18:21Come out at once and untie my hands.
- 18:25His brothers grew pale and faint from fear, but they came out and
- 18:29set him free. After this, Ashperzella did not
- 18:33wish to live with his brothers and he got ready to leave home.
- 18:38His sister and mother begged him to stay, but he wouldn't.
- 18:42That's the end of Part 2. OK, and now on to part three.
- 19:01He went away and walked until he came to a field where a man was
- 19:05plowing. When he turned up dirt he threw
- 19:08it up into his mouth and swallowed it.
- 19:12Ashperzella gazed and gazed and at last said, Man, why do you
- 19:16swallow these clods? Why are you surprised
- 19:20Ashperzella killed the 100 headed Devi?
- 19:23What is amazing about swallowing clods of dirt?
- 19:25Said the dirt eater. I'm Ashperzella, so let's be
- 19:29brothers, said Ashperzella and they walked along together.
- 19:35Later, they came to another field where there was a man with
- 19:38stone wheels tied to his feet and two rabbits in his pockets.
- 19:42He let the rabbits go and then caught them again.
- 19:46Ashpertzela gazed and gazed at the man, and then said, Man,
- 19:50what are you doing? How can you catch those rabbits?
- 19:55Ashpertzela killed the 100 head to Devi.
- 19:57I'm just catching rabbits, said the rabbit catcher.
- 20:00This is Ashpertzela, and he'll be your brother if you want,
- 20:03said the dirt eater. So they walked on together.
- 20:07On the way, the friends decided that they should take turns
- 20:10shooting arrows. And where they landed, they
- 20:12should eat first. The dirt eater shot his arrow
- 20:16stuck in a very awkward place. But they came and ate breakfast
- 20:19there. Then the rabbit catcher shot his
- 20:22arrow which also stuck in an awkward place.
- 20:26They came to it and ate lunch. Last of all, Ashpertzella cast
- 20:30his arrow and it stuck in the shelf of the three Debbie's
- 20:33house. At that time the Debbie's were
- 20:36getting married. They saw the arrow stick in
- 20:38their shelf and stop the wedding.
- 20:41They tried to pull out the arrow but they struggled and struggled
- 20:44and could not move it. Then they said since we cannot
- 20:49pull out this arrow, let's leave in case the shooter comes to
- 20:53live here. They left one weak Devi who hid
- 20:56in the chimney. The three friends decided that
- 20:59each one of them would stay home and cook dinner.
- 21:03The first day the dirt eater stayed, he laid out dinner when
- 21:07behold the weak Devi came down from the chimney and said to the
- 21:10dirt eater, give me food and drink.
- 21:14He gave him food. Give me food and drink, said the
- 21:18Devi again. He gave him food again when he
- 21:22made the same demand 1/3 time the dirt eater answered, if you
- 21:26eat and drink everything, what will I say to my comrades?
- 21:29The Devi said give me food and drink or I will eat you and your
- 21:35provisions too. The dirt eater got scared and
- 21:39ran out of the door. The Devi sat down and finished
- 21:42all the food. The companions came home and saw
- 21:47that there was no food but Oh well they were OK for a day and
- 21:50the next morning Rabbit Catcher stayed home.
- 21:53The same thing happened to him as happened to the dirt eater.
- 21:56And then it was Ashford Zella's turn.
- 22:00He prepared lots of different food and drink for his
- 22:02companions. Then the weak Devi came out of
- 22:05the chimney and said give me food and drink.
- 22:09Ashpertzela did give me food and drink, said the Devi again.
- 22:15Ashpertzela did. When he asked a third time,
- 22:18Ashpertzela said if I give you everything, what will my
- 22:21comrades eat? If you won't give me food, I
- 22:25shall eat you and your food too. Ashpertzela smiled to himself,
- 22:30took his bow and arrow, shut the Devi through the heart and cut
- 22:33him in half. The Devi's head rolled one way
- 22:37and his body rolled another. The head cried out, follow me
- 22:42for happiness. The body cried out, follow me
- 22:46for sadness. In the meantime, Ashpertzela's
- 22:49companions returned. They ate and then said let's go
- 22:54and see what the Devi's head promised.
- 22:57The dovey's head rolled and fell into a hole.
- 23:00Ashpertzella looked in and saw three lovely maidens.
- 23:03He was pleased and said let's get them out and marry them.
- 23:08The deer eater slipped in, but before he had reached the bottom
- 23:11he called out, I'm burning up, Take Me Out and they took him
- 23:15out. Then Rabbit Catcher slipped down
- 23:19and the same thing happened to him.
- 23:21Then came Ashpertzella's turn. He said to his companions, when
- 23:26I call out, it burns, lowering me further into the hole.
- 23:30He called out many times it burns, but his companions only
- 23:34lowered him further. He went down the hole and saw
- 23:38the maidens, and the oldest was certainly the most beautiful of
- 23:41all. He took to the youngest and
- 23:45called out to the dirt eater. She is yours.
- 23:48Then he sent up the second sister, calling out to the
- 23:50rabbit catcher. She is yours last of all.
- 23:55He was about to send the oldest as his wife but she objected
- 23:59saying you go first, your brothers will betray you.
- 24:04Our hero was hard headed and insisted upon her going up
- 24:07first. Very well said the maiden, I
- 24:11will go, but know this, your companions will not draw you up.
- 24:15They will shut the hole and you will be left here. 3 streams
- 24:19will flow, one black, 1 blue, and 1 white.
- 24:22Do not put your head under any of them except for the white
- 24:25water, lest you be drowned. It was as she had said.
- 24:31When all three maidens were up, the two men put stones on the
- 24:34whole and left our hero. He was so indignant that at once
- 24:39he put his head onto the black spring, and was immediately
- 24:41carried down. That's the end of Part 3.
- 25:03OK, on to part 4, the final chapter.
- 25:07He wandered about here and there and at last came to an old
- 25:10woman's Hut. He called out, Mother, mother,
- 25:13give me some water. Ah, child, said the old woman,
- 25:18we don't have any until our Princess is eaten by the dragon.
- 25:23What dragon? Said Ashford Zella.
- 25:26The old woman replied, Our water is stolen by a dragon, and if we
- 25:30do not offer him a human to eat, the water will not flow.
- 25:35We have all paid this debt except for the king, and today
- 25:38his daughter is on the menu. Give me a jug so I can go to the
- 25:43well, said Ashpertzela. The woman begged him not to go,
- 25:47but he would not listen. The old woman got up and brought
- 25:51him jugs. Ashpertzela broke these small
- 25:54water jars and said, Don't you have one of those giant jugs?
- 25:59The old woman showed them where they were.
- 26:01Ashpertzela took them and went away.
- 26:04When he came to the edge of the stream, he saw a rich maiden
- 26:07sitting, shedding bitter tears. He asked her why, and when he
- 26:12learned that this was the King's daughter, he said I will sleep
- 26:15here. When the dragon comes, wake me
- 26:18up. He laid his head down on the
- 26:20maiden's lap and fell asleep. Soon the dragon appeared.
- 26:27The maiden was afraid to wake Ashpertzela, and she wept more
- 26:30than ever. One of her tears fell on
- 26:33Ashpertzella's cheek, and he woke up.
- 26:36When he saw the dragon, he rose up, shot an arrow, and cut it
- 26:39into pieces. The maiden, overjoyed,
- 26:42immediately ran home to her father and said you wouldn't
- 26:46believe this, but the dragon is dead.
- 26:51The king at first wouldn't believe it, but when the others
- 26:53did, he went out to look for our hero.
- 26:56He wanted to ask him to marry the Princess and give him half
- 26:58of the Kingdom. They looked and looked, but they
- 27:01could not find him. Then the old woman came to the
- 27:05palace and said, Mighty king, have mercy upon me and upon my
- 27:10son. The king knew that she had no
- 27:12son and said, You didn't have a son before, where did you get
- 27:17this one? God has given me a youth who has
- 27:20killed our enemy. The dragon answered the old
- 27:23woman. The king was happy that the
- 27:26youth was found. He sent his ministers to bring
- 27:28him to the palace. When Ashperzella came, the king
- 27:32offered him great presents, but he would not take them and said
- 27:36if you will please send me home, that's all I want.
- 27:40The king was disappointed. He begged him to marry his
- 27:43daughter, but it was to no avail, so he agreed.
- 27:48After this, Ashperzella went again to his adopted mother.
- 27:51On the way he saw a great tree and on top of it there was a
- 27:54Griffin's nest. Suddenly a dragon flew down and
- 27:58the little birds let out a terrified scream.
- 28:02When Ashperzella saw what was about to happen, he drew his bow
- 28:05and in the twinkling of an eye the dragon was dead.
- 28:10The mother dragon flew down and her fledglings told her what had
- 28:13happened. Then the grateful Griffin came
- 28:16to Ashperzella and said Tell me what you want so I can repay
- 28:20you. Ashpertzela said I don't want
- 28:24anything but to go home, it will be hard for me but I must repay
- 28:28your kind deed said the Griffin and told him to get food for the
- 28:31journey. Ashpertzela went back to the
- 28:34king and asked him for provisions.
- 28:38When everything was ready the Griffin put Ashpertzela on his
- 28:40back and flew off On the way. When the Griffin cried out,
- 28:45Ashpertzela put food into her mouth.
- 28:48Just as they were about to enter the world of light, the Griffin
- 28:51again cried aloud. Ashparzella had no more food
- 28:54left, so he cut off his calf and threw it into the Griffin's
- 28:58mouth. This morsel was so very tasty
- 29:02that the Griffin did not eat it, but kept it on the tip of her
- 29:06tongue. When they arrived, the Griffin
- 29:09said Now farewell, leap down and go home.
- 29:14Ashparzella got down and went away, but he walked with a limp.
- 29:19The Griffin said. What ails you that you are so
- 29:21lame? He told her.
- 29:24Then the Griffin took the piece of flesh she had kept on her
- 29:26tongue and put it in its place, and made it whole and went away.
- 29:31Ashpertzullo went back to seek his comrades.
- 29:34He went on and on until he came to a certain place.
- 29:37There he saw his two companions about to marry the beautiful
- 29:40maidens. He took aim with his bow and
- 29:43arrow and called out. Were the men or the women to
- 29:46blame? The oldest sister replied.
- 29:49How could it be the women's fault?
- 29:51It was the men. Esparzilla shot his arrow and
- 29:55killed the two companions. Then he took the beautiful
- 29:58maidens with him, married the oldest, and gave the two others
- 30:01to his brothers. The end.
- 30:21That was an epic 4 parter. It was one story, but I chopped
- 30:25it into four parts because gosh darn that was long.
- 30:29There was echoes of the previous Armenian Turkish tales.
- 30:32My dedicated listeners will remember much better than me
- 30:35which ones have the eagles flying higher in the Three
- 30:37Rivers or hairs or such. And I felt it was a little wild
- 30:41at the end where the ending only gets a paragraph to wrap
- 30:44everything up. I did change it to be the oldest
- 30:48Princess and I changed the words for sizes of jars just to be a
- 30:53little bit more consistent with the story.
- 30:55A Methuselah is a pretty big, I think it's a 5 liter wine bottle
- 30:59and then a split is the smallest wine bottle.
- 31:02The violent nursing kind of threw me off my game, but the
- 31:05rest of it was pretty fun and I look forward to more stories
- 31:08from this book. The podcast shout out is too
- 31:11wildly curious. A fun look at wildlife in nature
- 31:13with Laura and Kate. Go give them a listen.
- 31:16And my listener shout out is to Helsinki, locally known as Stadi
- 31:20and Hesa by folks from the countryside.
- 31:22And when I go there, I hope to see the National Museum of
- 31:26Finland and maybe catch an Apulanta concert.
- 31:31And so I say to my listener in Helsinki, Quitos, Yehuva Yeota,
- 31:37thank you. Good night.
