- 0:15Walden SpaceX is moving towards the 4th integrated test flight
- 0:18of Starship, the largest rocket ever constructed.
- 0:22Though a May launch did not materialize, Elon Musk has
- 0:25indicated a June 5th launch date on X Preparations are currently
- 0:29under way at Spacex's Starbase, where a launch rehearsal was
- 0:32completed on May 20th. A recent blog post by SpaceX
- 0:36elaborated on the issues encountered during the third
- 0:38test flight in mid March. The flight managed a successful
- 0:41separation from the Super Heavy booster and executed a full
- 0:44Ascend burn, marking the first significant hot staging
- 0:47milestone where Starship ignites its engines while still attached
- 0:50to the booster. However, the Super Heavy booster
- 0:53failed to soft land in the Gulf of Mexico as intended. 13 Raptor
- 0:57engines were ignited for the boost back burn, but six engines
- 1:01shut down prematurely, causing insufficient thrust during the
- 1:05final landing burn contact was lost with the booster at 462
- 1:09meters altitude just under 7 minutes into the mission.
- 1:13Flight data analysis pointed to filter blockage in the liquid
- 1:16oxygen supply lines, which led to a loss of inlet pressure in
- 1:20the engine oxygen turbo pumps. Despite previous attempts to
- 1:23address similar issues with hardware modifications, the
- 1:28problem persisted, necessitating further enhancements to
- 1:31propellant filtration and engine startup reliability.
- 1:35Starship itself faced separate issues after reaching orbit.
- 1:39The spacecraft's attitude control thrusters experience
- 1:42valve blockages, preventing proper roll control during the
- 1:45coast phase. Consequently, Starship could not
- 1:48relight its engines for controlled re entry, resulting
- 1:51in uncontrolled disintegration as it re entered the atmosphere
- 1:54with telemetry lost at approximately 65 kilometers
- 1:57altitude. For the 4th flight, SpaceX plans
- 2:00to add more control thrusters to improve redundancy and upgrade
- 2:04hardware to better withstand blockage.
- 2:07Additionally, the Super Heavy booster will jettison it's hot
- 2:11stage adapter post boost back burn to reduce mass during the
- 2:14final flight phase. Spacex's focus is shifting from
- 2:18achieving orbit to demonstrating reusable capabilities for both
- 2:22Starship and the Super Heavy booster.
- 2:24This involves executing a landing burn for a soft
- 2:27splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico and ensuring a controlled re
- 2:31entry of Starship, critical steps for proving the rocket's
- 2:36reusability. The Federal Aviation
- 2:38Administration FAA is expected to modify Spacex's launch
- 2:42license for this next flight. Given there was no public safety
- 2:46impact from the debris of the third flight, a launch license
- 2:49modification can proceed without formal closure of the mishap
- 2:54investigation, allowing for a quicker subsequent launch.
- 2:58The upcoming launch aims to test Spacex's ability to return both
- 3:02stages of Starship intact. The 4th flight will forgo in
- 3:06flight tests such as payload Bay door operations or propellant
- 3:09transfers, focusing instead on trajectory and safe splashdowns.
- 3:14The hardware and software changes for the 4th flight are
- 3:16designed to address the failures from the third.
- 3:19Improvements include additional filtration inside oxygen tanks
- 3:23and enhancements to the Raptor engine start up mechanisms to
- 3:26ensure a successful landing burn.
- 3:30Elon Musk has stated the goal for the upcoming flight is to
- 3:33demonstrate a virtual tower landing for the Super Heavy
- 3:36booster in the Gulf of Mexico. If successful, a future flight
- 3:40may attempt a return to the tower at Starbase.
- 3:44The ultimate vision for Starship involves not only NASA's Artemis
- 3:48missions to the Moon, but also Musk's long term plans for Mars
- 3:51colonization. With £16.7 million of thrust,
- 3:55Starship's capabilities far exceed any current rockets,
- 4:00including NASA's Space Launch System.
- 4:03Spacex's trial and error approach has yielded results,
- 4:06with the Falcon 9 and Dragon capsule both now integral to
- 4:09NASA and commercial operations. However, the pressure is on to
- 4:13ready Starship for NASA's 2026 Moon mission deadline.
- 4:17The 4th flight will carry no payloads, aiming instead to
- 4:20gather data on the Starship vehicles performance.
- 4:23This data is crucial for addressing technical issues
- 4:27observed in previous flights, such as propellant filtration
- 4:30and attitude control during re entry.
- 4:34The strategy to jettison the interstage section between the
- 4:36booster and ship after separation aims to improve
- 4:39flight dynamics and reduce mass, thus enhancing the final phase
- 4:42of the flight. Spacex's engineers are keen to
- 4:47observe the effects of these changes in real world
- 4:50conditions. Additional roll control
- 4:52thrusters and upgraded hardware are expected to enhance
- 4:55resilience against blockages. This upgrade is a direct
- 4:58response to the attitude control issues faced during the coast
- 5:01phase of the third flight. Successful tests of these
- 5:05enhancements will pave the way for more advanced missions,
- 5:08including booster landings at launch sites and deployment of
- 5:11payloads such as Starlink satellites.
- 5:14As SpaceX continues to iterate on Starship's design, the next
- 5:17flight represents an important step in demonstrating the
- 5:20feasibility of a fully reusable launch system.
- 5:23With further hardware improvements, SpaceX is poised
- 5:26to address the challenges highlighted in previous tests
- 5:30and advance toward its goal of making life multiplanetary.
