- 0:11Welcome, my dear friends, to the 133rd solo episode of Living
- 0:18Without Fear. I'm Esther Burke, your host from
- 0:22Switzerland, and I'm so happy you're here with me, listening
- 0:27with your heart open, walking with me through another real and
- 0:33honest story of life. This story happened some time
- 0:39ago on a trip to Turkey. It was meant to be a fun day, a
- 0:45shopping tour with five other women from my swimming group.
- 0:51We had spent beautiful days together, laughing, swimming and
- 0:57enjoying the sun. On that particular day, our swim
- 1:01coach recommended we visit his friend's leather shop.
- 1:07I remember thinking immediately, I don't need anything from here.
- 1:14I don't wear leather jackets and I already had more handbags than
- 1:20I use. But of course we went in
- 1:24together as a group and that's where the story began.
- 1:30The shop owner was charming and skilled.
- 1:33He invited us upstairs first, where shelves of handbags in
- 1:39every shape and colour waited for us.
- 1:43The air smelled of fresh leather and temptation.
- 1:48We all began to touch the bags to admire the craftsmanship and
- 1:55one after another we each chose something.
- 1:59I too bought a beautiful black leather handbag, even though
- 2:05deep inside I already felt quite resistance.
- 2:11Why am I buying this? After that, he invited us
- 2:17downstairs to see the jackets. And that's when it all got
- 2:23complicated. I tried on one jacket, then
- 2:28another, and then there it was, a beautiful one that fit me
- 2:34perfectly. The other said, oh, Esther, it
- 2:37looks amazing on you. And yes, it truly did.
- 2:43The leather was soft, the color a perfect match, and it gave me
- 2:49this elegant, confident look. But then came the price.
- 2:55And it was high. Too high for something I didn't
- 3:00need. I told the shop owner it was too
- 3:04expensive, but my friends encouraged me.
- 3:08It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and while they were
- 3:15waiting, the shop owner kindly offered them glasses of white
- 3:19wine. They've relaxed, laughed,
- 3:22chatted and I stood there torn apart.
- 3:27On one side, the voice of reason said, you don't need this
- 3:33jacket, you don't even wear leather.
- 3:37On the other side, a softer but stronger voice whispered, But
- 3:42look how good it looks on you. And they are all waiting.
- 3:46You don't want to be the complicated one again.
- 3:52And so I hesitated. I felt their eyes on me.
- 3:57I could feel the unspoken pressure.
- 4:01Just decide, and I did. I said yes.
- 4:06They smiled, happy that I had finally made-up my mind.
- 4:11The atmosphere lightened. We left the shop and everyone
- 4:16seemed pleased. Everyone but me.
- 4:20As we walked out, a strange mix of emotions filled me.
- 4:26Relief, confusion, and a deep sense of shame.
- 4:30Shame that I had spent money on something I didn't need.
- 4:36Shame that I had once again ignored my intuition, and shame
- 4:44that deep down I had bought it, not because I truly wanted it,
- 4:50but because I wanted to be long later.
- 4:55One of the women said with a laugh.
- 4:59Well, no wonder it took so long. Our little doll couldn't decide
- 5:04about her jacket. I smiled on the outside, but her
- 5:10words hit me inside. Little doll?
- 5:15It sounded playful, but I felt belittled, like she wanted to
- 5:21make me smaller, and I wondered why.
- 5:26Why did she need to say that? What did I provoke in her?
- 5:32Maybe my hesitation made her uncomfortable, maybe she's
- 5:37sawing me something she doesn't allow herself to feel.
- 5:43Doubt, sensitivity, the struggle to please.
- 5:48Or maybe she needed to appear stronger by making someone else
- 5:53smaller. But the truth is, her comment
- 5:58touched me only because I already felt small myself.
- 6:05If I had stood in my power, her words would have rolled off me.
- 6:11But I wasn't standing there as a woman in her truth.
- 6:16I was standing there as a woman who had just betrayed her own
- 6:22inner voice. That's why it hurt.
- 6:27And as I've reflected more deeply, I realised something
- 6:32else that had triggered me on that trip.
- 6:37There was another woman in the group, the one who always
- 6:41managed to get the most attention, who always took the
- 6:45larger portion when we shared food, who never asked would
- 6:50anyone else like some. At first I felt irritated by
- 6:56her. It seemed unfair, but slowly I
- 7:01understood. She was mirroring something in
- 7:04me, not because I am like her, but because I am her opposite.
- 7:12She mirrored the part of me that doesn't dare to take, the part
- 7:18that holds back, that says you go first.
- 7:23The part that believes it's more polite to wait than to claim
- 7:29what I want. She represented the unapologetic
- 7:36energy that I have suppressed for so long.
- 7:40The power to take space to say yes to myself without guilt or
- 7:47fear. And maybe in her presence, I was
- 7:52being invited to balance that energy within me, to find the
- 7:57middle ground between selflessness and self respect.
- 8:04It's strange how life works, how the people who irritate us most
- 8:11are often our best teachers. They hold up a mirror and say,
- 8:17look, this is the part of you that's still waiting to be seen.
- 8:24So today I thank them all. The woman who called me Little
- 8:30Doll, the one who always took more, the shop owner who smiled
- 8:36while I hesitated, and the jacket itself, which now hangs
- 8:42in my wardrobe like a quiet reminder.
- 8:47Because each of them showed me something I still needed to
- 8:51learn. That belonging starts within,
- 8:56that saying no is also an act of love, and that true beauty never
- 9:04comes from what we wear, but from standing fully in who we
- 9:10are. And maybe that's what this story
- 9:15reminds me of most deeply, That life constantly invites us to
- 9:22listen more carefully, not to the voices around us, but to the
- 9:28quiet one inside, the one that whispers you already have
- 9:35enough, you are already enough. Sometimes we lose that voice
- 9:43when we want to belong. We silence it when we fear
- 9:48standing out. We rush decisions because we
- 9:53don't want to disappoint anyone. And yet the only one we truly
- 9:59disappoint in those moments is ourselves.
- 10:04But every time we notice it, every time we pass and say, ah,
- 10:11there it is again. The need to please, the fear of
- 10:16being charged, the longing to fit in.
- 10:20We take a step closer to freedom because awareness is where
- 10:27change begins and self compassion is what keeps it
- 10:32alive. So today I choose to think that
- 10:38shopping day, the wine, the waiting, the confusion, the
- 10:42little doll comment and even the beautiful jacket in my wardrobe
- 10:49as a reminder that slowing down is a sign of strength.
- 10:55That's the most beautiful thing we can ever wear is self respect
- 11:01wrapped in honesty and grace. And to you, my dear listener,
- 11:07may you walk through your next leather shop moment with more
- 11:12patience for yourself. May you dare to pause, to
- 11:17breathe, to trust your intuition.
- 11:20Because your worth doesn't depend on what you buy or how
- 11:26fast you decide. It lives quietly inside you,
- 11:31waiting to be remembered. Thank you for listening, for
- 11:37walking this inner journey with me.
- 11:40And if you feel inspired to look deeper into your own patterns,
- 11:45reach out to me. Together, we can bring light and
- 11:50clarity to the places where you still feel torn and help you
- 11:56become the version of yourself who stands with love, courage,
- 12:02and quiet confidence. Until next week, stay gentle,
- 12:08stay real, and keep listening to your beautiful heart.
