- Lucas: Hey everyone, welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 64! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? Today I thought we'd go somewhere practical: the supermarket. Luna: Oh, I love grocery shopping. But in Cantonese? That's a challenge. Lucas: It's actually super useful. You'll be able to ask for prices and buy things. Let's start with the most important question: 幾多錢? Luna: 幾多錢? That means 'how much money?' right? Lucas: Exactly. 幾多錢 means 'how much is it?' Let's say it together: 幾多錢. Luna: 幾多錢. Lucas: Good. So in a shop, you can point at something and ask: 呢個幾多錢? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? So 呢個 is 'this one' — we learned that before. Lucas: Right. 呢個 means 'this one'. So 呢個幾多錢? is 'How much is this?' Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: Perfect. Now imagine you see a bag of apples and you want to buy them. You'd say: 呢個幾多錢? Luna: And the seller says the price. Then I want to say 'I want this one.' How do I say that? Lucas: That's our next phrase: 我要呢個. Luna: 我要呢個. 'I want this one.' Let me try: 我要呢個. Lucas: You've got it. 我要呢個 is so handy. You can use it at a market, a bakery, anywhere. Luna: Okay, so if the price is too high, how do I say 'too expensive'? Lucas: Great question. That's 太貴. 太 means 'too', and 貴 means 'expensive'. So 太貴 is 'too expensive'. Luna: 太貴. That sounds like something I'd say a lot. 太貴! Lucas: And if you want to ask for a discount, you can say 平啲. 平 means 'cheap', and 啲 means 'a little'. So 平啲 is 'cheaper' or 'a discount'. Luna: 平啲. So I can say 太貴, 平啲? Lucas: Exactly. That's a classic bargaining phrase. But be polite about it. Luna: Of course. And after I decide to buy, what do I say when I pay? Lucas: You can say 畀錢. 畀 means 'give', and 錢 is 'money'. So 畀錢 means 'pay' or 'I'll pay'. Luna: 畀錢. That's easy to remember. Lucas: Let's practice a mini conversation. Luna, you're the customer. You see a bag of oranges. What do you ask? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: Good. The seller says it's 50 dollars. You think it's too much. What do you say? Luna: 太貴. 平啲? Lucas: Nice. The seller says okay, 40 dollars. Then you say... Luna: 我要呢個. 畀錢. Lucas: Perfect! You just bought oranges in Cantonese. Luna: That felt really good. Let's go over the phrases again. Lucas: Sure. First: 幾多錢. Luna: 幾多錢. Lucas: 呢個幾多錢? Luna: 呢個幾多錢? Lucas: 我要呢個. Luna: 我要呢個. Lucas: 太貴. Luna: 太貴. Lucas: 平啲. Luna: 平啲. Lucas: And finally: 畀錢. Luna: 畀錢. Lucas: You're all set for your next trip to a Cantonese market. Luna: I can't wait to try these out. Thanks Lucas! Lucas: Thanks for listening, everyone. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. Luna: Bye bye!
