- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06Today we're turning the keys over to you, the fans, for a chat with one of the most diversely successful racers in the modern era from this part of the world, now wowing them in NASCAR.
- 0:19G'day everybody, Rusty here.
- 0:20Thank you for joining us on this special edition of the Shortcast.
- 0:24A big thanks to Trackhouse Racing too.
- 0:27Shane Van Gisbergen is standing by in North Carolina, ready to answer your questions.
- 0:32There is a feature episode we released recently that's worth a listen when you are finished here too, but it's on the two-wheel side.
- 0:38The idea came about when the latest members were inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in March.
- 0:44We...
- 0:45really should have had Craig Dack on the pod ages ago, and he's a worthy inclusion in the Hall of Fame too.
- 0:51From his success in Mr. Motocross to proudly representing Australia on numerous occasions, starting his own team, chalking up a 30-year milestone with it in 2023, and the incredible success that he's had as an owner too.
- 1:05Some of the star riders that he's guided along the way, including a young Chad Reed when he first set out to conquer the US.
- 1:13And some little-known stories, including a promo with an aerobics television show that had promoters worried about him.
- 1:20And a sliding doors moment that almost saw him switch to touring cars to race alongside an icon of the sport.
- 1:29Thanks to all of you who follow and listen.
- 1:31We have had a huge response on social media to this one.
- 1:34I'm not going to get to everyone's questions here.
- 1:37I just can't in the time that we've got.
- 1:39We've tried to focus on some common themes and to keep it mainly about the NASCAR chapter rather than looking...
- 1:46in the rearview mirror too much as they say there is a little around supercars comparisons and a fun memory that some of you asked about too let's get to the conversation it was great to catch up with Shane six months into this significant life and career switch and just weeks out from the defense of his win in Chicago last year that really put the wheels for this in motion
- 2:11Shane, welcome.
- 2:12We have had an overwhelming reaction to this.
- 2:16And one of the key messages that permeates all of the comments is how much you look like you are enjoying this new chapter.
- 2:24Clearly, it's busy, but has it kind of even exceeded your own expectations?
- 2:29Yeah.
- 2:29Well, firstly, good to see you again.
- 2:32Yeah, it's been amazing.
- 2:34It's been an amazing challenge and a good sort of refresh, I guess, too.
- 2:39There's no secret I wasn't enjoying last year, but, yeah, we made this huge, I guess, jump or risk to come home to America and try something different.
- 2:50And, yeah, first, I didn't know if I'd enjoy racing every week, the same thing, and I didn't know if I'd enjoy the ovals and, you know, living here, but...
- 3:00It's been the best thing I've ever done.
- 3:03Marcus Ambrose, so I speak to a lot, he said, when you get over here, you'll wish you did it 10 years ago.
- 3:10I've been loving it.
- 3:14I had a pretty amazing time in Australia for a long time and I think it was the perfect opportunity to go try something in Belton.
- 3:23It's been very difficult, but the ovals are so tough.
- 3:28I've got a lot to learn now, but
- 3:30Yeah, I just love racing every week and love the style of racing, love the way the American people go about it.
- 3:38Yeah, it's a very different attitude over here it feels like.
- 3:43Yeah, it's good.
- 3:44You've sparked all sorts of comments there and lots of people want to tap into some of these things.
- 3:49Firstly, on the Marcus Ambrose front, when did you kind of first start talking to him?
- 3:53He's offered lots of great, I guess, advice along the way.
- 3:57What's the best takeaway that he gave you?
- 4:00Oh, just try and fit in.
- 4:02Just be like one of them, you know, just be happy and just, you know, try and immerse yourself in the team, which is pretty easy to do.
- 4:09You know, Americans are very welcoming people, very happy, but...
- 4:13Yeah, I started talking to him as soon as the Chicago deal started happening, really.
- 4:18I just wanted to know all about sport, how to approach the one weekend and how to do things that, yeah, he's just so open about everything.
- 4:26So forthcoming with advice.
- 4:28And so, you know, this year we, we speak a lot, not every week at the moment, but every tried to speak every Thursday, especially before those first races and my other
- 4:39coach, I guess, or advisor is Kevin Hyde.
- 4:43So with those two guys, when I speak to Kevin,
- 4:47He just, you know, so advanced with Oval's talk, you know, that some stuff goes over my head like I wouldn't even know what's happening, whereas Marcus explains it to someone who's been through what I'm going before, going through before, you know, and he knows what I'm going to feel, what new experiences I'm going to have.
- 5:05I kind of get explained to it the basics and then the advanced version and it's really cool those two guys.
- 5:12You know, they say the same thing, but they say it completely differently.
- 5:15And when I get out there, you know, and I feel it, it's like, oh, yeah, that's how Mike explained it or that's how Kevin did it.
- 5:21So, yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 5:23Here's one from Ryan McGregor.
- 5:26Hi Shane, Ryan here.
- 5:27Hey, most of us in the Southern Hemisphere don't understand what it's like to turn only left.
- 5:32We only understand right and left on racetracks.
- 5:34What's the challenges of mostly going left?
- 5:36Is it finding tire grip, car balance, side drafting?
- 5:41What's the, can you explain to us people down here what it's like?
- 5:44Yeah, it's a big question.
- 5:47Like where do you start?
- 5:49So I knew it was gonna be difficult, but yeah, I don't know.
- 5:53two corners, four, as they call it here, it's so hard to get right.
- 5:57There's so many little intricate details about NASCAR, especially these Xfinity cars.
- 6:03They're very, very different.
- 6:04I felt more comfortable on the oval and the cup car.
- 6:07It's more normal.
- 6:08So these Xfinity cars, they set up the rear end, in particular to move, and they use the side force of the car for downforce.
- 6:15They use the side of the car like a sail almost.
- 6:18So the first time I drove at...
- 6:21Las Vegas, when the car loads in the banking, the diff, the rear end twists.
- 6:26So it's like a forklift and the whole car comes out sideways and they put their ass out in the air to hold you.
- 6:33So I drove into the corner the first time and I thought, shit, what's happening here?
- 6:37It felt like I was spinning out.
- 6:39I was facing the infield, it felt like.
- 6:41So I corrected the car and it just shot me straight to the fence because the car wasn't sliding.
- 6:47All four tires were gripped up, but because it was all twisted out, you know, Ross just says, you just got to go in, turn left, hold it, ignore everything.
- 6:57And the hand of God will save you.
- 6:59Michael.
- 7:02So imagine going into a corner at 300 kilometers an hour and the car cramps fully sideways and you're ignoring 30 years of driving basically and just telling yourself you're not sideways when you are.
- 7:14So having that trust.
- 7:17And then when you get a car beside you, you don't have side force.
- 7:20They take all the side force away.
- 7:21It's crazy.
- 7:23It's stuff I've never, ever felt before.
- 7:27And, you know, just the speeds you're doing things at.
- 7:30You know, I can go pretty good on the simulator.
- 7:33When you're doing those speeds into banking and just trusting that the hand of God is going to save you, it's hard.
- 7:40But, you know, I've only done one cup race on a proper oval and I felt, you know, uncomfortable in those cars.
- 7:47Those cars are like any other race car I've driven with the rear end.
- 7:50It's just the Xfinity car is really bizarre.
- 7:54And when you speak to the NASCAR drivers, they're the opposite.
- 7:58They want the old style back with the rear end because that's all they're used to.
- 8:01You know, they struggle with the car.
- 8:03So it was interesting to hear that.
- 8:05Yeah.
- 8:05Nice.
- 8:06One from Strew and Millwood here who says, how are all the other drivers towards you on and off the track?
- 8:13Yeah, so most have been very good.
- 8:15I've only had a problem with one guy and he took me out at Koda and then I got him back at Sonoma, but everyone else is awesome.
- 8:23We've had some hard battles.
- 8:25I've spun a guy.
- 8:26He's got me back and we spoke about it after and we're sweet.
- 8:31You just shake hands, get on with it.
- 8:32Everyone's...
- 8:33You know, it's pretty hard to be wanting to crash into someone because you've got to see them the next week, you know, and you always tend to be racing the same guys every week, especially on the ovals.
- 8:43You kind of find where your level's at and you're racing those guys every week.
- 8:46But, yeah, most guys are pretty nice.
- 8:49My teammates are awesome, especially in Callaghan, Trackhouse, and...
- 8:53You know, Ross, Daniel and I, we sort of get along well, talk about the cars a lot and, you know, Ross and I go running most weeks together.
- 9:00So, yeah, it's pretty cool here how it all works.
- 9:04Excellent.
- 9:04Camille McLean, how different the media is in the United States and the positive reaction that you kind of have had to that.
- 9:12And I guess the extension for me there, Shane, is, you know, with Portland, Sonoma and so on, has the interest kind of grown in the wake of all that too?
- 9:20Yeah, so it's hard.
- 9:21I've always, as you know, struggled with the media side of things.
- 9:25But I feel Australian media, they're always looking for you to slip up, always looking for the headline.
- 9:34And I'm not sure if that's because I was one of the bigger names there or whatever, but I felt like if I did an article and there was 20 questions and I had all the answers, they'd pick out one little bit of writing and that would be the headline.
- 9:46I always would answer in Australia guarded.
- 9:50Like I was always thinking too much about what I was going to say and not wanting to say the right thing or the wrong thing.
- 9:56And whereas here I feel like you can be yourself and then, you know, it's you're appreciated for it and they write what you say, you know, they're.
- 10:05they do sometimes try and put the words in your mouth, but the questions are more, not genuine, but less trying to get that clickbait out of you.
- 10:13And the stories generally seem to be positive here.
- 10:16And it just kind of snowballs.
- 10:18Where in Australia, it felt like it snowballed the other way from a lot of people.
- 10:23And they're always driving the negative to get the clicks and the short term just drags everything down where it seems to be the opposite here.
- 10:31So yeah, I don't know.
- 10:34Yeah, I feel like I can be myself here and not get away with it.
- 10:37But, you know, people appreciate that.
- 10:39Enjoy that.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:40Yeah.
- 10:41Which is cool.
- 10:42A lot of people asking about burnouts and drifting.
- 10:45Supercars or NASCAR, what is harder?
- 10:49No, they're both pretty good.
- 10:52Yeah, drifting here was pretty fun after the races and doing a burnout.
- 10:55So I don't think they'd ever seen drifting here at a NASCAR race.
- 10:58So that was pretty cool.
- 10:59But, yeah, just, you know, these races are hard to win.
- 11:04So getting to celebrate was a pretty cool feeling.
- 11:08Another piece of audio here.
- 11:09This is from Matt Shaw.
- 11:11Yeah.
- 11:12Hey, Shane, Matt here.
- 11:13We'll send you a race speedway in NZ.
- 11:15Will you do a chilli bowl or similar over there?
- 11:18Justin actually messaged me last week, so maybe.
- 11:22I think I'm going to go get fitted up in a midget here and see if I fit and can get comfortable because he wanted me to do the chilli bowl this year.
- 11:28But my other boss, Ty Norris, who's like the president of Trackhouse,
- 11:35He said he sees the flip count every year at Chili Bowl and hates it.
- 11:38So I'd like to argue with both.
- 11:40But, yeah, I plan to race Speedway New Zealand.
- 11:43I want to come back end of the year and hopefully race some sprint cars again.
- 11:47But then pretty early in January is the Chili Bowl.
- 11:50Yeah, maybe.
- 11:51There's a possibility I'd do it.
- 11:52I'd love to do it, but it's not easy.
- 11:55Yeah.
- 11:56I just enjoyed the sprint car stuff and the quick fire races, quick night, pack up the lead, go to the next one in a couple of days.
- 12:03So, yeah, hopefully we do that again.
- 12:05We'll sneak a quick break here on Rusty's Garage.
- 12:07More of your questions with Shane Van Gisbergen in the US right after this.
- 12:14You're listening to the Motorsport Brief, our garage shortcast with SVG beaming in from Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 12:20Now we've got a little bit more time with him before he heads off to a sim session.
- 12:25He told me before we hit record just how impressive that cup sim especially is.
- 12:31And he's in the simulator a lot, as you guys know, so probably not easily impressed there.
- 12:36It must be unbelievable.
- 12:37In addition to his busy race schedule this year, he is just incredible.
- 12:41immersed in all of this, isn't he?
- 12:43And loving it.
- 12:43Let's get back to the chat now.
- 12:47Lots of people asking about 2025.
- 12:49Not sure what you can share with us.
- 12:50What can you tell us for next year?
- 12:53Yeah, well, not sure.
- 12:55You know, that was the plan, was this year to be a learning year in Xfinity and then move to Cup next year.
- 13:01And I know the team's trying to get a charter for a third car, and that's sounding pretty good.
- 13:06But, you know, we have a lot of drivers at Trackhouse, so...
- 13:10Yeah, I just fingers crossed, head down, just keep learning, keep getting better and hopefully good things come.
- 13:16But yeah, nothing official yet, but I moved here to be in the Cup Series, you know, so hopefully we have some good news soon.
- 13:25Fans asking about spotting for Will Brown.
- 13:28Were there learnings in that?
- 13:29Was there a bit of a blend of NASCAR come supercars approach?
- 13:32How'd you tackle it?
- 13:34Yeah, he dubbed me in there about being hungover.
- 13:37That made my job harder.
- 13:40Yeah, we had a good day Saturday, obviously, so celebrated with some friends.
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:46Yeah, that was fun and cool to go through it with Will.
- 13:49Like I knew what he'd been through, knew what he was trying to learn, and especially the other spotter, Brett.
- 13:56He was a proper southern NASCAR guy, so pretty hard to understand.
- 14:02So I had to translate a little bit.
- 14:04But, you know, Will's such a fun guy, so we had a ball.
- 14:08Unfortunately, he had some car problems, so didn't get to –
- 14:13Didn't get to show his full potential.
- 14:16But yeah, I struggled sort of telling him what to do.
- 14:20Because on the road course, I don't like inside and outside.
- 14:22I like left and right car position on a road course.
- 14:26Okay.
- 14:26So where I was spotting was just one corner was a heppin.
- 14:30And then it would be a kink left on the front straight.
- 14:32So the heppin's easy.
- 14:34But I kept saying outside, outside.
- 14:37And then, of course, that outside became inside when the cars went to the left.
- 14:42So I'd stuff up by saying outside instead of left.
- 14:45I'd be outside, outside.
- 14:46Oh, no, no, he's on the inside.
- 14:47Sorry.
- 14:51I kept stopping that up.
- 14:53Yeah, he said he got confused at one point, so he just drove down the metal.
- 14:56Awesome.
- 14:57Awesome insights.
- 14:58Hey, I want to be largely in this chat being eyes forward because I think a lot of people want to ask about NASCAR, right?
- 15:04But aren't you still kind of, when you've got time, because I know you're busy, in touch with a couple of the younger guys in supercars that you've helped or maybe mentored along the way?
- 15:12Maybe a Ryan Wood or some of the Norwell team or just time hasn't really lent itself for that?
- 15:17Yeah, so I still watch Supercars.
- 15:20It's hard to turn it off after doing it for 15, 16 years.
- 15:23You know, I still want to watch and take an interest, and I still got a lot of friends in it.
- 15:28So, yeah, I watch it, and, yeah, I actually watch it without sound.
- 15:32I watch it watching the Apex 100s podcast, you know, because I kind of feel like I'm watching it with friends, and the commentary shits me.
- 15:39So I just watch it with those guys.
- 15:42But it's interesting.
- 15:43I find it...
- 15:45fascinating you know there's a lot of good kiwi guys and you know kind of trying to study them and and understand where they're struggling and and then i try and help them a little bit but yeah i really um really cheering for richie in particular i want him to succeed and i was involved with this sort of process of coming back last year and yeah so i'll try and work with him a bit closer
- 16:09you know, help him come into the prime.
- 16:11But, yeah, it's been great to see him back racing and still looks like he's enjoying it.
- 16:17So, yeah, I really sort of have maybe a soft spot is the right way to put it for him.
- 16:22So, yeah, it's cool to watch him go well.
- 16:25Another piece of audio here from Lee Rasmussen.
- 16:28G'day, Shane.
- 16:29Lee here.
- 16:29Just wondering if you'd ever race Indy cars like your mate Scott McLaughlin and go to the Indy 500 and hopefully win that one day.
- 16:38Yeah, I want to get better here first than NASCAR, but yeah, that would be awesome to do the double or even just a road course or an oval and IndyCar, but that is no easy task.
- 16:50You know, talking with Scott Moore and Kyle a little bit, seeing how fast stuff's happening and how tough that is, you know, that would be, that's a few years away, but yeah, maybe one day if I get better at NASCAR, doing the double would be awesome.
- 17:06That would be an amazing thing to do.
- 17:08Brock Bowley.
- 17:09He goes by the handle Brock Star.
- 17:11Sequential box, either cup or supercars or H-pattern gearbox Xfinity.
- 17:16What's your favourite?
- 17:17Oh, sequential, yeah, but the H pattern has been a challenge.
- 17:20So H pattern, I was okay left-handed, and I'm always okay driving a left-hand drive.
- 17:26But when I first started driving right-handed H pattern, I really struggled.
- 17:32You know, that's just all the wrong muscles.
- 17:35Like on the outside of my arm was always sore, pushing second or third.
- 17:38Like I was using muscles I've never used before.
- 17:41It was tough.
- 17:43But, yeah, I struggled a little bit as well.
- 17:46on the double weekend when I did Coda and Xperia and Cup, you know, I just happened to go back between H-pack and sequential.
- 17:54It was pretty tough.
- 17:56But yeah, I prefer the sequential.
- 17:58The sequential without the flat shift in the Cup cars were really cool.
- 18:02Excellent.
- 18:02A lot of love for Roland, mate, or Ronald, I should say.
- 18:06I want to come to Roland in a second.
- 18:09How is he?
- 18:09Has he settled in?
- 18:11And Luke Kreben is asking, is his name a derivative of Roland?
- 18:16Where did it come from?
- 18:17Not at all.
- 18:19Jess, a little bit, shaking her head.
- 18:22No, his name is no relation at all.
- 18:25Yeah, Ronald the Ridgeback.
- 18:27Yeah, he's...
- 18:28Yeah, it's just a coincidence.
- 18:30But he's awesome.
- 18:31He, yeah, he come over with us.
- 18:33We settled here for a month and he come over and it was freezing cold and living in Queensland, he'd never felt cold before.
- 18:40So as soon as he put his foot on frosted grass, he shat himself, didn't know what to do.
- 18:46But yeah, now it's hot and tumid every day.
- 18:50He's the opposite, you know, it's too hot for him.
- 18:52But yeah, it's fun.
- 18:53And in America, you take your dog everywhere, so.
- 18:55Take him to the workshop almost every day.
- 18:58Excellent.
- 18:58He comes to some races with us and stuff.
- 19:01It's really cool.
- 19:01Glad we brought him.
- 19:04How was it with Roland interviewing you at Sonoma?
- 19:08Useless.
- 19:09He should not do that.
- 19:11He should have paid someone else to do it.
- 19:15We've got a couple of fun ones to finish here.
- 19:18One from a Jess Dane that may or may not have come from Charlotte, North Carolina.
- 19:23What happens when you fill the dishwashing drawer with washing up liquid?
- 19:27Is that a little bit of... Did you have a moment there?
- 19:30Sorry about...
- 19:32I'm about five metres away from the dishwasher, and this sport right here was covered in bubble soap water.
- 19:39Classic, classic.
- 19:41One here to wrap up from David, some audio.
- 19:45Shane, it's great to watch your progress in the States, really enjoying how you're having some success over there.
- 19:49I've got a question for you, though.
- 19:51When you won the Supercars Championship in Adelaide a couple of years ago and did those incredible burnouts, how nervous were you about hitting the championship trophy, and what do you think would have happened if you did?
- 20:01Well, I didn't think about the consequences because I wouldn't have done it.
- 20:05So that was actually my mechanic at the time, Jared.
- 20:09He was thinking, what could we do different?
- 20:12And then he thought, yes, you take your boot off and stick it in the throttle.
- 20:15So that worked pretty well.
- 20:17But I did learn when that where the outside kill switch was in case it started moving, I could dive for the kill switch.
- 20:24But yeah, I'm glad I didn't think about the consequences before I went and did that.
- 20:30Yeah.
- 20:31And I never got told off for that one too, which is good.
- 20:33Awesome.
- 20:34You're on basically the eve almost of Chicago.
- 20:38I think you'd love to go back to back there.
- 20:39Have you set yourself a quiet little goal between now and the end of the year with all of this, or has it just been about the pure enjoyment and learning?
- 20:46Yeah, so I try never to set goals, but obviously on the road courses, we're expected to win and be up front.
- 20:53So yeah, as long as I prepare well and put in the effort there, we'll naturally run up front.
- 20:59I think every road course we've had a good chance this year, so it's been awesome.
- 21:03So yeah, Chicago should be a continuation of that.
- 21:06But my focus every week is the ovals and understanding that and all the little details it takes to get better.
- 21:13It's going to take me a long time.
- 21:15You could see Marcus even after five years, Juan Pablo Montoya.
- 21:19It took them so long.
- 21:21These guys have been, like I've been road racing since I was a kid, these guys have been doing ovals.
- 21:27It's funny when you talk about or when I talk about what I'm doing in the car on a road course, it blows their minds.
- 21:36They've never done that kind of thing, whereas on the ovals, it's the other way around.
- 21:39Yeah.
- 21:40My focus is just keep understanding the ovals, keep getting better at them.
- 21:44And, you know, I want to one day be, you know, up running up front and be competitive most weeks on the ovals.
- 21:51And, you know, the road courses, they'll just keep coming naturally for me, I think.
- 21:55Awesome.
- 21:55you're reveling, mate.
- 21:57I know you're enjoying it.
- 21:57Keep enjoying it.
- 21:59Your dad and your sister, I think, are coming to Chicago.
- 22:02Enjoy having them with you as well.
- 22:04And it's our first chance to see you since your mum very sadly left us, mate.
- 22:09It was a very, very touching tribute that you had there.
- 22:11And I know she'll continue to be proud of what you're doing, mate.
- 22:13Well done.
- 22:14Cool.
- 22:14Thank you, mate.
- 22:15Cheers.
- 22:17Some good things to come, you sense, on this NASCAR journey of his.
- 22:21Well done, Shane.
- 22:22And awesome to hear that he's potentially going to do some sprint car races back home over summer.
- 22:27Wouldn't it be great to see him at Chilli Bowl too?
- 22:29I hope selfishly that that happens.
- 22:31And I don't reckon I'm alone there.
- 22:33I think he said on maybe it was the Stacking Pennies pod that he wanted to spend the first half of this year just concentrating on NASCAR.
- 22:41That makes total sense.
- 22:42And then to see what other occasional opportunities arise that fit without taking his eyes off the main objective.
- 22:49Fantastic that he is starting to give a little thought to doing a couple of those things now.
- 22:54That is it for today.
- 22:55Matt Payne from Penrite Racing will join us on the short cast soon.
- 22:59And we're catching up with Ricky Carmichael too, the goat of Supercross and Motocross.
- 23:04Keep an eye out for notifications on feature episodes as well.
- 23:07One with Emma Gilmore in the pipeline.
- 23:10She's back rallying after that massive crash in Extreme E when she was competing for McLaren.
- 23:16And one of the few that could go wheel to wheel with one of the greats of Formula One, Ayrton Sinner.
- 23:22We're talking to Calvin Fish, who commentates in America these days, who reflects on his own career behind the wheel and his time against a legend of motorsport.
- 23:32We'll catch you next time.
- 23:33Bye for now.
