- 1:09Speaker 2: Following Round one of the draft, I had some technical
- 1:12Speaker 2: issues putting together this podcast, and finally, at around three am,
- 1:17Speaker 2: I realized that I wouldn't be able to fix it
- 1:19Speaker 2: until the morning, so I got up fairly early, re
- 1:23Speaker 2: recorded a segment, and posted the podcast. By late afternoon,
- 1:28Speaker 2: I was dragging, so I took a nap. It's the
- 1:32Speaker 2: first one I've taken in ages, and let me tell you,
- 1:35Speaker 2: it completely rejuvenated me. So as of April twenty eighth,
- 1:40Speaker 2: twenty twenty three, I think that I Dan Horde am
- 1:45Speaker 2: now a nap guy. Let's get to Day two of
- 1:49Speaker 2: the draft. In the second round, with the sixtieth overall pick,
- 1:53Speaker 2: the Bengals selected cornerback DJ Turner out of Michigan Dane
- 1:58Speaker 2: Beruglet from The Athletic Head. Turner rated non number forty
- 2:00Speaker 2: two overall on his big Board and says that Turner
- 2:03Speaker 2: is smart, explosive, and competitive. From the Bengals perspective, it
- 2:09Speaker 2: addresses one of their biggest needs. The current roster includes
- 2:13Speaker 2: three outside corners with experience in chitabey A Wouja, Cam
- 2:17Speaker 2: Taylor Britt and free agent pickup Sydney Jones. The fourth
- 2:21Speaker 2: a Wooja, is coming back from a torn acl and
- 2:25Speaker 2: entering the final year of his contract. Taylor, Britt only
- 2:28Speaker 2: has thirteen games under his belt, and Jones signed a
- 2:32Speaker 2: one year, proven deal after battling injuries throughout his first
- 2:35Speaker 2: six NFL seasons. Turner not only adds depth but could
- 2:40Speaker 2: see significant snaps as a rookie. Here's Zach Taylor.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Incided Adam, we felt like we need to add depth
- 2:47Speaker 3: there in the secondary, and he's a guy that can
- 2:50Speaker 3: come in and really compete a multiple roles for us
- 2:54Speaker 3: and provide depth outside and inside. And really liked the
- 2:59Speaker 3: intangible super to the table as well. So excited, welcome
- 3:01Speaker 3: to the mix. I believe if there's two positions you
- 3:04Speaker 3: can say you can never have enough players over seventeen
- 3:06Speaker 3: game season plus to play, it's it's defensive line and corner.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And so that's just anytime there's a good player there
- 3:12Speaker 3: that's going to help you, I don't think you're ever wrong,
- 3:15Speaker 3: you know, hitting at those two spots. And again, we
- 3:17Speaker 3: feel like we've got really high end players at all
- 3:19Speaker 3: those spots. But it never hurts you to take a
- 3:22Speaker 3: guy that you think fits your system and what you
- 3:24Speaker 3: want to do. And you know you could argue a
- 3:27Speaker 3: couple other spots, but those are Those are two key
- 3:29Speaker 3: spots to me, I think that you're never wrong adding
- 3:31Speaker 3: valuable players there.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Turner is five eleven, one hundred and seventy nine pounds
- 3:36Speaker 2: and doesn't have great length, but he can fly. The
- 3:40Speaker 2: twenty two year old ran the fastest forty yard dash
- 3:43Speaker 2: that this year's combine at four point two six. Here's
- 3:48Speaker 2: defensive coordinator lou Ana Romo.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, you see it. You see it on tape. You know,
- 3:54Speaker 4: you'll see guys that have great time speeding. It doesn't
- 3:57Speaker 4: match their play speed in vice versa. But this guy
- 4:00Speaker 4: can run, and you see it on tape. If he
- 4:02Speaker 4: gets out of position, he can get back in it
- 4:04Speaker 4: because of his speed. You know, DB's in our league today,
- 4:08Speaker 4: they're gonna get beat, they're gonna get out of position,
- 4:11Speaker 4: and this guy has his recovery speed to get back
- 4:14Speaker 4: in and maybe make a play on the ball. So
- 4:17Speaker 4: that's that's one of the things that we really liked.
- 4:19Speaker 4: You look around the league and the weapons that so
- 4:22Speaker 4: many teams have on offense and the speed that people have,
- 4:26Speaker 4: you know, you got to try to match it somehow,
- 4:28Speaker 4: and you know, the faster guys we can get, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 4: certainly is gonna give us an advantage. You know, we're
- 4:34Speaker 4: gonna have to chase quarterbacks around, and that means you
- 4:36Speaker 4: have to cover a little bit longer, and you know,
- 4:39Speaker 4: the fast we are, I think, the better chance we
- 4:41Speaker 4: have to get off the field.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Turner had twenty pass breakups and three interceptions in his
- 4:47Speaker 2: two years as a starter for the Wolverines. The Bengals
- 4:51Speaker 2: Booth podcast is brought to you by pay Corps. More

- 5:06Speaker 2: traded back as they picked up the final pick in
- 5:09Speaker 2: the sixth round, number two seventeen overall, by moving back
- 5:13Speaker 2: three spots from number ninety two to number ninety five,
- 5:17Speaker 2: where they selected Alabama safety Jordan Battle. He was ranked
- 5:22Speaker 2: number eighty nine on Brugler's Big Board, and Dane called
- 5:25Speaker 2: him a smart, experience safety with reliable football character and
- 5:30Speaker 2: competitive toughness. He projects as a low ceiling starter in
- 5:34Speaker 2: the NFL with core special team skills. Here's Zach Taylor.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Jordan Battle really excited. You know, we had high regards
- 5:46Speaker 3: for this guy as a safety again coming from Alabama.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Winner went there to compete, went to one of the
- 5:52Speaker 3: best high schools, you know, Saint Thomas Quanas in all
- 5:55Speaker 3: of America, one of the top high schools, competed there,
- 5:58Speaker 3: went to Alabama to compete there with the number of
- 6:00Speaker 3: great safeties in order to win championships. So he's not
- 6:03Speaker 3: a Freddy competition. And then it's get a chance to
- 6:05Speaker 3: come here and help us win championships as well. So
- 6:07Speaker 3: we think this guy fits everything that we're about. We
- 6:09Speaker 3: sit up here and talk about all the time. This
- 6:11Speaker 3: guy's a plus character, a leader on a great team,
- 6:14Speaker 3: and it's going to be valuable for us as a
- 6:16Speaker 3: safety and special teams player. Hard to miss on guys
- 6:18Speaker 3: like that. You know, it's when you can stand on
- 6:20Speaker 3: the table for their character and there they're playing experience
- 6:22Speaker 3: at a high level in the SEC and all the
- 6:24Speaker 3: big games he's played for, and you know, it's just
- 6:27Speaker 3: this is a guy that we're excited was still around
- 6:30Speaker 3: here in the third round and we're able to add him.
- 6:31Speaker 5: In to the mix.
- 6:33Speaker 2: After losing Jesse Bates and Von Bell to free agency,
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Bengals have Dax Hill and free agent pickup Nick
- 6:40Speaker 2: Scott set to replace them in the starting lineup, but
- 6:43Speaker 2: depth was a question mark. Here's lou Ana Romo.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Yeah, he's in position a lot to make plays. You know,
- 6:50Speaker 4: he's very rarely out of position. You can see him communicating.
- 6:54Speaker 4: It's which is really important back there obviously, so and
- 6:59Speaker 4: you can trust him. You can tell his teammates trust him. Again,
- 7:03Speaker 4: rarely out of position, gets guys on the ground, so
- 7:07Speaker 4: you know, just and then the characters off the charts.
- 7:11Speaker 4: So that's why he's so intriguing.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Battle is six pounds and ran a four five five forty,
- 7:18Speaker 2: so he doesn't have blazing speed, but he started forty
- 7:23Speaker 2: four games at Alabama, had six interceptions and returned three
- 7:27Speaker 2: of them for touchdowns. He also had nearly eight hundred
- 7:31Speaker 2: career snaps on special teams. The Bengals Booth podcast is

- 8:00Speaker 2: analysis of rounds two and three, and to look ahead
- 8:04Speaker 2: to Saturday with Dave Lapham. All right, lap Day two
- 8:09Speaker 2: of the draft has finished. The Bengals made their second
- 8:11Speaker 2: and third round picks. Let me get begin a big picture.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Are you at all surprised that three picks into the
- 8:17Speaker 2: draft the Bengals have not selected an offensive player?
- 8:20Speaker 1: You know, I guess jan, in this era of salary cap, one.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Side of the football is going to have to be
- 8:29Speaker 5: less expensive than the other. And you lost two expensive
- 8:33Speaker 5: safeties and you replaced it with, you know, like a
- 8:36Speaker 5: second year safety on a rookie contract, inexpensive safety from
- 8:41Speaker 5: the Rams draft another safety in this round.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So the safety position is.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Pretty inexpensive or a rookie contract to the cornerback position.
- 8:50Speaker 5: You know, you have to get you have to get
- 8:53Speaker 5: lead less expensive somewhere, and they've decided that the defensive
- 8:57Speaker 5: side of the football is where that's going to take.
- 9:01Speaker 2: So their second round pick, number sixty overall was DJ Turner,
- 9:05Speaker 2: the fastest player at the NFL scouting combine this year.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Ran a four to two six forty two year starter
- 9:12Speaker 2: at Michigan. Pretty productive had twenty deflections over the last
- 9:17Speaker 2: couple of years and three interceptions. What do you make
- 9:19Speaker 2: of DJ Turner?
- 9:21Speaker 5: Yeah, just I mean tremendous speed, recoverability speed, And I remember,
- 9:26Speaker 5: you know, talking to various defensive backs during the course
- 9:28Speaker 5: of my playing career.
- 9:30Speaker 1: That's the one thing that they coveted.
- 9:32Speaker 5: You know, anybody that had flat out burner speed, at
- 9:36Speaker 5: that recoverability speed, and you think you're beaten.
- 9:39Speaker 1: It looks like you're beaten, but you're really not.
- 9:41Speaker 5: And he's got he's got that kind of that kind
- 9:43Speaker 5: of jet in his system. And you look at it.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Dan the first round pick. Murphy can run, second round
- 9:52Speaker 5: pick can run. Darren Simmons is smiling because you know
- 9:56Speaker 5: these guys, they're gonna have roles.
- 9:59Speaker 1: But how many staffs.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Is that gonna involve as first year players, as rookies. Well,
- 10:05Speaker 5: you're gonna figure special team is going to.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Be part of that.
- 10:08Speaker 5: And the overall team speed of this football team just
- 10:11Speaker 5: got light years better. When you're talking about a two
- 10:13Speaker 5: hundred and seventy pound guy that runs four or five
- 10:16Speaker 5: and the defensive corner that's drafted, that's the fastest guy
- 10:19Speaker 5: in the draft running a four to two six forty
- 10:22Speaker 5: that that has.
- 10:23Speaker 1: That's pretty good stuff. Uh, And that'll help not.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Just the offensive and defensive side of things, or defensively
- 10:30Speaker 5: in this in this case, but it also helps overall
- 10:33Speaker 5: in special teams.
- 10:35Speaker 2: He's not a long corner, he's about five eleven one pounds,
- 10:40Speaker 2: doesn't have especially long arms. Is that a big concern
- 10:44Speaker 2: in this day and age? Or does his speed makeup
- 10:46Speaker 2: for it?
- 10:47Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 10:48Speaker 1: I guess that.
- 10:48Speaker 5: You know that that's the thing when you look at it.
- 10:52Speaker 5: No matter how fast a guy is, if he's covered,
- 10:56Speaker 5: the contested catch part of it comes into play, and
- 10:59Speaker 5: the bigger body wide receivers is he is he going
- 11:02Speaker 5: to be able to get the football off of them?
- 11:04Speaker 5: You know, with with what you're talking about, and that
- 11:06Speaker 5: that's gonna be the challenge.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That's gonna be the thing.
- 11:09Speaker 5: That his catch radius isn't gonna be as big, so
- 11:13Speaker 5: you know that that's gonna that's gonna be the issue.
- 11:17Speaker 5: But you know, played at a big conference and played
- 11:19Speaker 5: at a good level at a big conference obviously, but
- 11:23Speaker 5: the one thing that coaches love when you have it
- 11:26Speaker 5: and fear when you.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Don't is speed.
- 11:29Speaker 5: And it's something that you know you can't coach guys
- 11:31Speaker 5: either have it or they don't, and this kid has it.
- 11:35Speaker 2: We talked after round one about what we thought the
- 11:37Speaker 2: Bengals might do in the second round. I think we
- 11:39Speaker 2: both thought cornerback was probably the most likely position, assuming
- 11:43Speaker 2: there was one that they really liked still there at
- 11:46Speaker 2: number sixty, but tight end was also a possibility, and
- 11:49Speaker 2: then we saw them start flying off the board. Sam
- 11:52Speaker 2: Laporte was the third pick of the second round. Michael
- 11:55Speaker 2: Mayer was the fourth pick of the second round. Later
- 11:58Speaker 2: in the second round, there were other tight ends that
- 12:01Speaker 2: were taken that the Bengals might have had some interest in,
- 12:04Speaker 2: like Luke Musgrave of Oregon State or Luke schoon Maker
- 12:07Speaker 2: of Michigan. Do you think that any of those, if
- 12:11Speaker 2: any of those guys had still been there at number sixty,
- 12:14Speaker 2: they might have gone tight end.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Yeah, that that's a that's a question that is is
- 12:20Speaker 5: a valid one.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 12:23Speaker 5: The concern with Washington is probably the knees. You know,
- 12:27Speaker 5: he's good good knee problems, and honestly, he's more of
- 12:32Speaker 5: a third tackle. I mean the way he's built, the
- 12:35Speaker 5: way he's structured, he's a heck of a blocker. The
- 12:37Speaker 5: fact that you know he wasn't taken. I think bothered,
- 12:40Speaker 5: you know, bothered some people. But you know, they they
- 12:45Speaker 5: made the decision that they made. They went best player available.
- 12:48Speaker 5: They traded back to pick up an extra six round
- 12:51Speaker 5: pick that will probably either be a punter or maybe
- 12:56Speaker 5: a quarterback. They'll they'll use the quarter of the punter
- 13:00Speaker 5: maybe on on one of them, the extra six round pick,
- 13:02Speaker 5: and and the plutter on the seventh or whatever if
- 13:04Speaker 5: they want to make sure that they get both of
- 13:07Speaker 5: those and and uh and not have to rely on
- 13:10Speaker 5: college free agency and recruitment of players. So it's that
- 13:15Speaker 5: that that part of it's uh, that part of it's
- 13:17Speaker 5: going to be interesting. But you know, they they decided
- 13:20Speaker 5: to go with the safety and that and that third pick.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And a safety that.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Is involved in the loose Saban scheme has been involved
- 13:30Speaker 5: in a very complicated, sophisticated NFL like system.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And uh, you got a kid that has played in the.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Box for a significant number of STAPs deep safety for
- 13:40Speaker 5: a good number of steps to slot corner as well,
- 13:43Speaker 5: so you have position versatility.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And another chess piece.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Lou An Arumo likes to likes to play with uh
- 13:50Speaker 5: with the front, the defensive front and the back end
- 13:54Speaker 5: with different looks, different numbers of players. Now we've seen
- 13:58Speaker 5: against the Baltimore Ravens, in particular with Jackson now back
- 14:01Speaker 5: on board, five defensive linemen, three safeties, mixing it up
- 14:05Speaker 5: doing all kinds of different things. The Bengals lost their
- 14:08Speaker 5: two starting safeties, expensive safeties. They get a lot younger
- 14:13Speaker 5: and a lot less expensive at that position, and Louis
- 14:17Speaker 5: he Narumo is going to be able to do his
- 14:19Speaker 5: match up with those chess pieces on the.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Front end and back end.
- 14:23Speaker 5: Samwichames Logan Wilson, and Jermaine Prad.
- 14:29Speaker 2: As I read about Jordan Battle, the third round draft
- 14:32Speaker 2: pick out of Alabama, I feel like it's Von Bell
- 14:35Speaker 2: two point zero, not the fastest guy in the world,
- 14:38Speaker 2: but solid as a rock, proven player, team leader, captain type,
- 14:43Speaker 2: played on great teams in high school and college. His pedigree,
- 14:46Speaker 2: to me, reminds me so much of Von Bell. It's crazy.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I agree, Dan.
- 14:51Speaker 5: And when you look at it, you know Clemson, Alabama,
- 14:57Speaker 5: national championships, big time programs, captains, you know, solid people.
- 15:04Speaker 5: The Bengals are sticking to that, that formula, and it's
- 15:08Speaker 5: it's paint dividends for them. I think it's going to
- 15:10Speaker 5: continue to paint dividends for them, and uh, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 5: I agree.
- 15:14Speaker 1: First thing I.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Thought of when I saw the breakdown of this kid's STAPs,
- 15:19Speaker 5: I thought, man, they got themselves a guy just like
- 15:23Speaker 5: von Beld that Luanne Rumo is going to be able
- 15:25Speaker 5: to line up in a bunch of different spots and
- 15:29Speaker 5: uh and have some productivity. But he played a significant
- 15:33Speaker 5: amount at slot corner. And you know that's something that
- 15:37Speaker 5: you know that Vaughn wasn't necessarily a big factor there.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned Georgia tight end Darnell Washington because
- 15:44Speaker 2: I saw a lot of Bengals fans were freaking out
- 15:46Speaker 2: about the fact that not only did the Bengals not
- 15:49Speaker 2: take him, but he went to the Steelers one pick
- 15:52Speaker 2: after where the Bengals were supposed to select in Round three. Right,
- 15:56Speaker 2: he's got an issue that's definitely a reason why he's
- 15:59Speaker 2: lat or why he lasted this long. I mean, the
- 16:02Speaker 2: Bengals had the ninety second pick, they traded down Kansas
- 16:06Speaker 2: City came up to take an offensive tackle. Darnell Washington
- 16:09Speaker 2: went with the next pick. That means ninety two teams
- 16:13Speaker 2: or ninety two opportunities existed where teams did not select
- 16:18Speaker 2: Darnell Washington. Why Bengals fans are going crazy over the
- 16:22Speaker 2: fact that they didn't go for him in that spot.
- 16:24Speaker 2: It's a little bit of a headtch scratcher to me. Clearly,
- 16:27Speaker 2: there's an issue that the entire NFL was worried about.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Exactly, and I think he went to an organization that.
- 16:34Speaker 5: Looks like their tight ends has almost third offensive tackles.
- 16:38Speaker 5: You know, the tight ends with the Pittsburgh Steelers are
- 16:42Speaker 5: inline blockers a ton, and it's not to say that
- 16:45Speaker 5: they don't throw the football to them, but you know
- 16:47Speaker 5: that Benny cunning Hams and their big body guys, that
- 16:51Speaker 5: line up is almost another formidable tackle. And you know
- 16:55Speaker 5: Pittsburgh wants to run the football. They want to establish that.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Part of things baked year on their young quarterback and.
- 17:02Speaker 5: That it also gives him a big target for the
- 17:04Speaker 5: young quarterback to take advantage of. He's going to look
- 17:07Speaker 5: like the Eiffel Tower in the red zone and to
- 17:10Speaker 5: throw the football too. But I think he was a
- 17:13Speaker 5: better fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now the Bengal's gonna
- 17:16Speaker 5: have to defend him, there's no question about that. But
- 17:19Speaker 5: I don't think that he is necessarily what the Bengals
- 17:23Speaker 5: want out of their time. They want more receiving out
- 17:26Speaker 5: of their tight ends. They're not looking for third offensive
- 17:28Speaker 5: tackles out of their tight ends. Although you know, Drew
- 17:31Speaker 5: Sample will we'll fill that role of being the blocker
- 17:35Speaker 5: as such. You know, the guy put his hand in
- 17:37Speaker 5: the dirt at the end of the line of scrimmage
- 17:39Speaker 5: and get after some people.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And that's Devin Asiasi's primary scale if he's still on
- 17:45Speaker 2: the roster.
- 17:45Speaker 1: As well, right, exactly, Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 2: All right, let's look ahead to day three, beginning with
- 17:51Speaker 2: round four. Let's start with tight ends. There are still
- 17:53Speaker 2: some highly touted tight ends available, including UC's Josh Wiley.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Will Mallory from Miami is still there. There's Zach Koons
- 18:00Speaker 2: from Old Dominion, Payne Durham from Purdue. That's just to
- 18:04Speaker 2: name for There's some other guys that were, you know,
- 18:07Speaker 2: graded pretty highly. So if they want to take a
- 18:10Speaker 2: tight end and get somebody into the building that's under
- 18:13Speaker 2: contact for more than a year, which is the case
- 18:16Speaker 2: with Eric Smith Junior and Drew Sample and Devin Asiassi,
- 18:20Speaker 2: they've got an opportunity in round four.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And I think that's a that's a plausible possibility.
- 18:25Speaker 5: You know, if you asked me earlier this week in
- 18:30Speaker 5: a podcast, is there a guy that I would like
- 18:33Speaker 5: to see the Cincinnati Bengals get in the drafts? And
- 18:35Speaker 5: I mentioned, you know, a guy that you were real
- 18:37Speaker 5: familiar with obviously and Josh Willy and I wasn't thinking,
- 18:41Speaker 5: you know, necessarily day one or day two guy. But
- 18:44Speaker 5: I think he's a solid day three guy. Uh, there's there,
- 18:48Speaker 5: There's no two ways about it. And then you know
- 18:51Speaker 5: the tight end from old ominion.
- 18:52Speaker 1: He started out at I.
- 18:54Speaker 5: Think it was Penn State and transfer transfer out of there.
- 18:58Speaker 5: He's got unbelieved immense athletic ability for his production. Even
- 19:02Speaker 5: an old dominion didn't match that athletic ability. But if
- 19:06Speaker 5: the coaches think, you know what, man, what the trace
- 19:09Speaker 5: he has, I'm going to be able to develop this guy.
- 19:13Speaker 1: You know, that one might be an interesting tight end
- 19:16Speaker 1: to look at as well.
- 19:18Speaker 5: You know, the one thing that's that's pretty interesting the
- 19:21Speaker 5: first two draft picks that the Bengals had twenty and
- 19:25Speaker 5: twenty one years old. You talk about young guys with
- 19:29Speaker 5: upside potentials. They've proven they can play, but there's still
- 19:32Speaker 5: room to grow, and they have not hit their ceiling,
- 19:36Speaker 5: and they've got a nice high floor established and the
- 19:39Speaker 5: ceilings up there. So I think in the early stages
- 19:43Speaker 5: of the draft they did a good job. They did
- 19:45Speaker 5: their homework, they trusted their board, spent a lot of
- 19:48Speaker 5: time putting this together and trusted it.
- 19:51Speaker 2: There are still some very good running backs left in
- 19:54Speaker 2: this draft. Roshawn Johnson from Texas is still there. Israel
- 19:57Speaker 2: Abanacanada from pitt is still there. Dwayne McBride from UA,
- 20:01Speaker 2: b Zach Evans, romal miss And you know, I think
- 20:04Speaker 2: we always have a little bit of a bias for
- 20:06Speaker 2: the guys that we see play in person. That guy,
- 20:09Speaker 2: for me is Keaton Mitchell from East Carolina Speedster. Now,
- 20:14Speaker 2: he's not a guy that's gonna mix it up much
- 20:16Speaker 2: in between the tackles. But if you're looking for a
- 20:18Speaker 2: home run threat, a guy that, like we talked about
- 20:21Speaker 2: in the first round with Jamier Gibbs, a guy who
- 20:24Speaker 2: can take a short pass and turn it into a
- 20:25Speaker 2: long touchdown, Keith Mitchell could be one of those guys.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Yeah, there's no doubt. I mean I think that whatever running.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Back they do take, this is a guy that has
- 20:35Speaker 5: to be able to run a route Tree has to
- 20:37Speaker 5: be able to catch the football, has to be able
- 20:40Speaker 5: to do something with it after he catches it. You know,
- 20:42Speaker 5: turn a seven yard completion into additionally yards for a
- 20:48Speaker 5: first down as necessary, you know, to get something done
- 20:52Speaker 5: with yards after catch, be able to get separation in
- 20:55Speaker 5: their road running ability, and maybe even be able to
- 21:00Speaker 5: to line up empty out of that backfield, lineup as
- 21:02Speaker 5: a slot and be able to, like I said before,
- 21:05Speaker 5: run multiple routes, run run a route Tree.
- 21:08Speaker 1: I think that skill set is going to have to
- 21:09Speaker 1: be there. It would be nice if he'd.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Be able to stick his nose in there and pass
- 21:13Speaker 5: protection as well, because if if, if he's a one
- 21:16Speaker 5: trick pony, defenses can you know, expose that so and
- 21:22Speaker 5: there are guys out there that that can that can
- 21:25Speaker 5: do those kinds of things, and there are guys available,
- 21:28Speaker 5: so it's going to be They're still in the same mode, Dan,
- 21:31Speaker 5: They're on a round by round basis. They're just sitting
- 21:35Speaker 5: back and waiting for the draft to come to them.
- 21:38Speaker 5: They're not reaching for anybody. They're just saying, we're going
- 21:41Speaker 5: to take best available player. And let's face it, when
- 21:45Speaker 5: everybody establishes their.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Big board, it's based on need.
- 21:49Speaker 5: I mean, everybody doesn't run the same offense. They don't
- 21:52Speaker 5: have the same schematics. They're not they don't have the
- 21:55Speaker 5: same expectations out of.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Players to fit into that offense.
- 21:58Speaker 5: So everybody's board is differ, but everybody's board is set
- 22:02Speaker 5: for the best available player within their schematic, and that's
- 22:07Speaker 5: where the big difference comes in. You know, people are like,
- 22:10Speaker 5: you know, wow, why would you take him?
- 22:12Speaker 1: Well, he's a good fit for this group, not as
- 22:14Speaker 1: good a fit for that group. And that's not just
- 22:17Speaker 1: since Daddy Bengals. That's all over the league.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Let me wrap up by asking you about two offensive
- 22:23Speaker 2: linemen who are still on the board. We talked about
- 22:26Speaker 2: Dewan Jones from Ohio State last night as a possible
- 22:30Speaker 2: second round pick. Well, he's still there going into round four,
- 22:35Speaker 2: and BYU's Blake Freeland is intriguing to me. He's also
- 22:39Speaker 2: six ' eight. He's not big in beefy like Dwan Jones,
- 22:41Speaker 2: he's three hundred and two pounds, but he posted unbelievable
- 22:45Speaker 2: numbers at the NFL scouting combine. What are your thoughts
- 22:48Speaker 2: on Dwan Jones still being there and the possibility of
- 22:53Speaker 2: Blake Freeland if he's still on the board when the
- 22:55Speaker 2: Bengals have an opportunity to pick.
- 22:57Speaker 5: If Dwan Jones could give your freeland twenty pounds, that'd
- 23:02Speaker 5: be great. You'd have one that would solve one problem
- 23:07Speaker 5: and the other one would beef up to where people
- 23:09Speaker 5: would feel feel.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Better about them.
- 23:13Speaker 5: You know, Dwan Jones, what a what a very very
- 23:17Speaker 5: painful and costly lesson and the biggest job interview of
- 23:20Speaker 5: his life. He refused to weigh in, refuse to work out,
- 23:25Speaker 5: and there were rumors that he was like over three.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Hundred and ninety pounds.
- 23:28Speaker 5: I heard like three hundred and ninety three paulls. That's scary,
- 23:33Speaker 5: you know, That's like, man, if you can't discipline yourself
- 23:37Speaker 5: to get yourself in the best possible shape you can
- 23:41Speaker 5: for the biggest job interview of your life, what are
- 23:44Speaker 5: you going to do in the off season after your
- 23:46Speaker 5: rookie year, second year, third year, you're gonna let yourself
- 23:49Speaker 5: balloon up to four ten, four fifteen. I mean, play
- 23:52Speaker 5: yo yo like that with that kind of a weight problem. So,
- 23:55Speaker 5: I mean, obviously that's scared people. And if they're teaching
- 23:58Speaker 5: them a lesson, you know, trying to make a point.
- 24:02Speaker 5: It's a point well taken at this point in time,
- 24:04Speaker 5: But you wonder what round will somebody say, Well, you
- 24:08Speaker 5: know what he's he's got, he's too big of a
- 24:12Speaker 5: too great a prospect. This guy's a dinosaur's he's got,
- 24:17Speaker 5: you know, arms like a pterodactyl. He's he's a massive
- 24:21Speaker 5: human being. I think I can get through to him.
- 24:25Speaker 5: I think I think my dietitian can get through to him.
- 24:28Speaker 5: I think my strength coach can get through to him. Well,
- 24:31Speaker 5: you know, good luck, maybe you can, maybe you can.
- 24:35Speaker 5: But boy, I mean, this is a guy that had
- 24:38Speaker 5: NC double a college basketball officers Division I college basketball
- 24:42Speaker 5: offers out of high school as well as football. I mean,
- 24:45Speaker 5: you know, he's he's a guy that's got he's got
- 24:47Speaker 5: decent feet, but you get up to almost four hundred pounds,
- 24:50Speaker 5: it's hard to redirect that. Man.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's like that, you know your feet, Your feet are
- 24:54Speaker 1: a much different scenario trying to redirect a body that big.
- 24:59Speaker 1: But he's got he's got some skills, there's no doubt
- 25:02Speaker 1: about it.
- 25:03Speaker 5: But you know, there aren't many four hundred pounds tackles
- 25:06Speaker 5: in the National Football League, that's for sure. So that
- 25:10Speaker 5: that's that's obviously the big, big concern there. And with Freedland,
- 25:14Speaker 5: it's it's, you know, the strength part of it, you know.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Just now, I think I think he will go pretty
- 25:22Speaker 5: early in the fourth round. I'd be surprised if he
- 25:24Speaker 5: doesn't because he is very athletic.
- 25:26Speaker 1: There's no question about it.
- 25:27Speaker 5: He he shows that athleticism, uh, you know, not only
- 25:31Speaker 5: when he tests, so he's not just a you know,
- 25:35Speaker 5: shorts and T shirt guy.
- 25:37Speaker 1: He shows on the football field too.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Three rounds down, four to go. I look forward to
- 25:42Speaker 2: doing this again tomorrow.
- 25:44Speaker 5: Four rounds to go, five picks with that extra sixth
- 25:47Speaker 5: round pick, so they were able to finally trade back
- 25:50Speaker 5: and get that extra pick. I just wish it was
- 25:53Speaker 5: maybe a round sooner and maybe you know, that fifth
- 25:57Speaker 5: round instead of the sixth round. But hey, beggars can't
- 26:00Speaker 5: be choosers.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Don't forget. I'll have a new edition of this podcast
