- Lucas: Hey Luna, klaar voor weer een aflevering? We're back with Learn Dutch with Fexingo — episode 182. Luna: Yes! I'm ready. Last time we learned 'in, op, onder' — prepositions of place. That was fun. What are we doing today? Lucas: We're continuing with three more spatial prepositions: voor, achter, and naast. These are super useful for describing where things are. Luna: Oh, like 'in front of', 'behind', and 'next to'? I think I've heard those in Dutch. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with voor. Say it with me: voor. Luna: voor. Lucas: Good. Now a phrase: De hond is voor de deur. 'The dog is in front of the door.' Say it. Luna: De hond is voor de deur. Lucas: Perfect. Next: achter. That means 'behind'. Say: De kat is achter het huis. Luna: De kat is achter het huis. 'The cat is behind the house.' Lucas: Yes! Now naast — 'next to'. De fiets is naast de auto. The bike is next to the car. Luna: De fiets is naast de auto. That's a good one. Lucas: Let's practice them together. Imagine you're at a park. There's a bench, a tree, and a flower. Can you say 'The flower is next to the bench'? Luna: Hmm... De bloem is naast de bank? Lucas: Yes! Great. And 'The tree is behind the bench'? Luna: De boom is achter de bank. Lucas: Excellent. You're nailing this. Now, let's do a quick review of all three. Repeat after me: voor, achter, naast. Luna: voor, achter, naast. Lucas: Now the phrases: De hond is voor de deur. De kat is achter het huis. De fiets is naast de auto. Luna: De hond is voor de deur. De kat is achter het huis. De fiets is naast de auto. Lucas: You've got it. Let's try a little dialogue. Say I ask you: 'Waar is de hond?' You answer: 'De hond is voor de deur.' Luna: De hond is voor de deur. Lucas: And if I ask: 'Waar is de kat?' Luna: De kat is achter het huis. Lucas: Perfect. And 'Waar is de fiets?' Luna: De fiets is naast de auto. Lucas: See, you're already using them naturally. These prepositions come up all the time — when giving directions, describing a room, or talking about where things are. Luna: That's so useful. I feel like I can describe my whole apartment now. 'De stoel is naast de tafel.' Lucas: Exactly. And 'Het boek is voor de lamp' — the book is in front of the lamp. Luna: Het boek is voor de lamp. Got it. Lucas: You know, it's awesome that you're picking this up so quickly. It reminds me that learning Dutch is actually about small steps — like these prepositions — that add up. Luna: Totally.
