Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Corina Jordan: Fish and Game Chief Executive on new firearms law reforms
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Gun owners have been lef scratching their heads this after
- 0:02Speaker 1: yesterday's gun announcement. Nicole macke won't reverse the semi automatic band,
- 0:06Speaker 1: won't scrap the controversial firearms registry. What she will do
- 0:10Speaker 1: is automatically banned gang members from getting firearms licenses. Sounds reasonable,
- 0:15Speaker 1: make it easier for owners to store their firearms, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: create an independent firearms safety body. Karina Jordan is Fishing
- 0:21Speaker 1: Game CEO of ME this morning. Karena, good morning, Good morning.
- 0:24Speaker 1: What did you make of the changes?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Oh, we think there are pragmatic and sensible changes. I
- 0:30Speaker 2: know there's probably going to be a little bit of
- 0:31Speaker 2: appointment from some hunters out there. You mentioned the semi automatics,
- 0:35Speaker 2: but we're just encouraging everyone to have a good look
- 0:37Speaker 2: at the policy intent that's been set out, consider their submissions,
- 0:42Speaker 2: and then select a submit to the Select Committee. So
- 0:44Speaker 2: we think overall, this is quite a balanced approach and
- 0:47Speaker 2: it releases some of those overlie bureaucatic approaches that can
- 0:50Speaker 2: be taken to legitimate firearms owners, while still focusing on
- 0:54Speaker 2: criminal the criminal element in our community.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And Karina, you're quite happy with the travel all stuff.
- 1:00Speaker 1: What's changing with the travel and taking firearms with you.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It's just clarifying those travel requirements. Obviously, safe storage of
- 1:10Speaker 2: firearms while we're traveling is really important, especially for our hunters.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So it's just clarifying the conditions there and making them
- 1:16Speaker 2: a little bit more streamlined so they're easy to understand.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So you can travel with firearms. You just need to
- 1:20Speaker 2: have your bault and your ammunition separate, and these conditions
- 1:23Speaker 2: around how long you leave those firearms in the vehicle
- 1:25Speaker 2: unattended for.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Okay, what about this red flag system for mental health issues?
- 1:33Speaker 2: That's just what we know is that that's parts of
- 1:36Speaker 2: our community are challenged by mental health just you know,
- 1:39Speaker 2: throughout their lives. Life has a little bit tough, and
- 1:42Speaker 2: we don't want that stigma associated with firearms ownership. And
- 1:45Speaker 2: what we know is it's really good for mental health
- 1:47Speaker 2: and physical well being to get out there in the
- 1:49Speaker 2: natural environment and hunt for your dinner. And this is
- 1:52Speaker 2: a large part of huge parts of our community. And
- 1:55Speaker 2: so this just means that there's more cautious, safer for
- 2:00Speaker 2: people that have challenges to own and retain the ownership
- 2:04Speaker 2: of their firearms and use them for legitimate hunting purposes,
- 2:08Speaker 2: which is good for their.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Well being, all right, Karina, Appreciate your time, Karena, Jordan
- 2:12Speaker 1: Fish and Games CEO.
