- 0:00Speaker 1: Now we know that there's always plenty happening around the
- 0:04Speaker 1: territory and our paramedics are incredibly busy all the time.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Everybody out there at Saint John's and joining me on
- 0:10Speaker 1: the line right now is Craig Garaway. Good morning to you.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Craig Hey, Good morning Katie.
- 0:15Speaker 1: How are you not too bad? Craig by the look
- 0:17Speaker 1: of it, pretty busy weekend Saturday out at rum Jungle Lake.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Talk us through what happened out there.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, look a bit of a varied weekend for our
- 0:27Speaker 2: parametriolicals territory Lake Rumdungle Lake out A bachelor there used
- 0:32Speaker 2: to go there many years on as a young lad,
- 0:34Speaker 2: very deep lake, and we had a forty five year
- 0:36Speaker 2: old mile there diving in that lake and may have
- 0:40Speaker 2: come up a little bit too fast and had the
- 0:42Speaker 2: decompression like symptoms when he surfaced. So the Bachelor Clinic
- 0:48Speaker 2: we responded after we got the triple lo call. We
- 0:51Speaker 2: also worked with care Flight to see if they had
- 0:53Speaker 2: any resources in that area, and we also sent a
- 0:55Speaker 2: paramedic crew out that way. So between the three responses,
- 1:00Speaker 2: so Clinic and Careful, we're able to get that patient
- 1:02Speaker 2: back into the world on hospital in a stable condition,
- 1:05Speaker 2: which was a good end result.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Goodness, it sounds like a pretty frightening situation and one
- 1:10Speaker 1: where everybody had to obviously get involved and make sure
- 1:13Speaker 1: that he was able to get to the hospital as
- 1:15Speaker 1: quickly as possible.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it was a bit scary out there for
- 1:19Speaker 2: the people involved, and obviously it's not something we get
- 1:22Speaker 2: a lot of in the Northern Territory, so yeah, it's
- 1:25Speaker 2: something a bit different for us, and obviously all the
- 1:28Speaker 2: services working together there tom sure we've got a good,
- 1:31Speaker 2: speedy result.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And speaking of scary, well, about five pm yesterday in Farah,
- 1:37Speaker 1: it was every parent's worst nightmare. A five year old
- 1:41Speaker 1: hit by a car.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, look, as you said, it is a nightmare for
- 1:46Speaker 2: parents and for the person driving the car as well,
- 1:49Speaker 2: and by stand as it's a horrific thing to see happen.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And a little young fella had some bleeding from the
- 1:56Speaker 2: face and the nose and paramits they're attended. Thankfully, was
- 2:01Speaker 2: in a stable condition and was transported to hospital. But
- 2:04Speaker 2: a bit of a warning for everyone, you know, young
- 2:07Speaker 2: kids don't have that road sense that other people do
- 2:10Speaker 2: and sometimes they just come out of nowhere. They always
- 2:12Speaker 2: be prepared yeah.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Goodness me so, so here's all right, just minor injuries
- 2:17Speaker 1: by the sound of it.
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's correct. That's my understanding the moment mine are injuried
- 2:21Speaker 2: from that incident and recovering quite well.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and just a reminder that you know that little
- 2:26Speaker 1: kids are about depending on where where you are. I know,
- 2:29Speaker 1: it can be so hard. You know, at all times
- 2:32Speaker 1: you've almost got to have eyes in the back.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Of your head, are you sure?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah, sure do Now another one, this one early this morning,
- 2:39Speaker 1: you received a Triple zero call from a woman who
- 2:42Speaker 1: was in labor.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, it happened in Johnston, very early this morning. Our
- 2:47Speaker 2: Triple zero center out at pem Cauley there, our call
- 2:51Speaker 2: taker there took a call for a lady who was
- 2:54Speaker 2: having a baby girl. And I didn't want to wait
- 2:57Speaker 2: any longer and wasn't willing to wait till the end.
- 2:59Speaker 2: What's got there either, So our call taker there worked
- 3:03Speaker 2: with mum over the phone and sister her through the
- 3:05Speaker 2: birth and both baby girl and mum doing both very well,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and we're transported to check out.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Goodness, mate got there, so had the baby at home.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I had the baby at home on Valentine's Day with
- 3:18Speaker 2: the words time, oh twenty two.
- 3:21Speaker 1: How lovely you guys are all Like, there's quite often
- 3:24Speaker 1: situations where our paramedics are well the call takers and
- 3:29Speaker 1: the operators are having to help women deliver their babies
- 3:33Speaker 1: at home.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, look, we probably do about probably close to ten
- 3:37Speaker 2: a year. I reckon both they averaged it out and
- 3:39Speaker 2: some really interesting scenar horios I must have met along
- 3:42Speaker 2: the way or the journey there. But our guys do
- 3:44Speaker 2: a fantastic job in the comm center there. They talked
- 3:49Speaker 2: the family or parents or whoever it is at the time,
- 3:51Speaker 2: right through the whole process, and it's a very well scripted,
- 3:55Speaker 2: trained process to ensure that really good outcomes at the end.
- 3:58Speaker 1: How amazing do you ever? I know that it's probably
- 4:01Speaker 1: just a day in the life really of one of
- 4:03Speaker 1: those call operators or a paramedic. But is there ever
- 4:06Speaker 1: a situation where you then get to go out and
- 4:08Speaker 1: meet the parents with their babies or anything like that.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yeah, look, we try and do that a bit. It's
- 4:15Speaker 2: good for our guys, it's good for the parents on
- 4:17Speaker 2: the other end of the phone, and it's always a
- 4:19Speaker 2: great photo opportunity for the parents. For the eighteen l
- 4:23Speaker 2: twenty first birthday, and yeah, so we do work with
- 4:27Speaker 2: the media and the family to try and make that happen.
- 4:29Speaker 2: And just it's nice to have a really good story.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Normally most of my stories aren't overly politician. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 2: it's great to have a really positive story.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Any babies named after the paramedics or the call takers, I'm.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Not aware of any at the moment, but if I
- 4:46Speaker 2: find everything.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm always fascinated by these women who are able
- 4:51Speaker 1: to have their babies at home. I think it's amazing,
- 4:53Speaker 1: that miracle of life. And like you said, so often
- 4:56Speaker 1: you guys are out there for that real trauma that
- 4:58Speaker 1: you see every day, but when you get to see
- 5:01Speaker 1: these happy stories, I think it'll be lovely.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, look, it is fantastic, and you know, we
- 5:07Speaker 2: love being part of it. And yeah, it's just a
- 5:10Speaker 2: great part of our job. You know, the paramedics and
- 5:13Speaker 2: the health workers have a really horrific job a lot
- 5:16Speaker 2: of the time, but it's really nice to be part
- 5:18Speaker 2: of these really good stories.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Well, Craig Garaway, it is always lovely to catch up
- 5:22Speaker 1: with you. I really appreciate your time this morning.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Okay, thank you, talking again soon.
