- 0:00Hello there and welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:02I'm Kimberly Boyd, founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:05and today I have with me Miss Shuntá Montgomery,
- 0:09the amazing Shuntá Hello.
- 0:12Hello. Hi, how are you?
- 0:15Doing great and so glad to see you and be able to chat with you today.
- 0:19How was your weekend?
- 0:21My weekend was busy.
- 0:23It was my grand twins' birthday celebration.
- 0:27And so ~ yeah, it was very busy with setting up for their birthday pool party with
- 0:33a nacho bar with
- 0:36a lot of different toppings.
- 0:38So fun. Did they have a great time?
- 0:41They did. They had a grand time.
- 0:43Yes.
- 0:44A grand time for your grands.
- 0:46Absolutely.
- 0:47I love it. So what was your most favorite part?
- 0:50Of this weekend? getting to see their joy.
- 0:53One, when they ~ went swimming,
- 0:56and then two, when they opened their presents.
- 0:59believe it or not, Journey asked for an iPad and was not happy when
- 1:04she unwrapped the iPad. She was not happy when she unwrapped unwrapped every gift
- 1:10until she got the specific gift that she was looking for.
- 1:13Which was ~ K-pop stars betting.
- 1:16Go figure.
- 1:19Okay.
- 1:21Girl knows what she wants.
- 1:23Yes. And
- 1:23she kept searching and was like,
- 1:25okay, next,
- 1:26~
- 1:27next. And when she got the the bedding,
- 1:29she was like, Okay, I'm out. I wanna go put it on my bed
- 1:32my gosh, that's cute. Okay, so you enjoyed watching them opening their gifts,
- 1:37the joy, the excitement, time with their friends and time with the family.
- 1:41That's good.
- 1:42Yes. And I
- 1:43even invited strangers to the party because there were some kids at the pool.
- 1:48And I was like, it's no sense in we're having a nacho bar and having
- 1:51all this food and not inviting them.
- 1:54So I was like, hey, y'all wanna come in and partake in the nacho bar?
- 1:57And so they did. We I ended up talking and getting to know ~ two of the ladies.
- 2:02One lady was the leasing agent that actually ~ helped my daughter
- 2:06get into the apartment. And then another lady we think lives underneath my daughter.
- 2:10Which
- 2:10Great.
- 2:11yes, and was very ~ ironic and interesting because she was like,
- 2:16I think someone lives above me and their kid has autism.
- 2:20And I was like, yeah, that would be us,
- 2:22my daughter. And so I got to talk to the leasing agent about that and you know,
- 2:27share my concerns about that because we really did try to get
- 2:30a first floor apartment because we know he stems a lot.
- 2:32however, we wasn't able to.
- 2:34And so she kind of put my mind at ease and she was like,
- 2:37Well, it is an apartment complex and people know what they get into when they
- 2:40get into an apartment complex.
- 2:42So
- 2:42Nice. Okay.
- 2:43Well good. Awesome. Well congratulations
- 2:45Yes.
- 2:46on celebrating your twin's birthday.
- 2:48That's super fun. Yeah.
- 2:50It was. Thank you.
- 2:51When I think about you and the work that you do with people
- 2:56in your coaching business at Live Life Fully,
- 2:59I think about, well, personal development.
- 3:01And when I think about you, the queen of self-care,
- 3:05the queen of self-love, the queen of level up,
- 3:08I think about personal development as a whole.
- 3:11And the whole idea that personal growth is that.
- 3:15It is personal.
- 3:16And I want to hear from you like when you hear personal growth is personal,
- 3:21like what comes up for you? What does that mean to you?
- 3:24Hmm, great question. well,
- 3:27what I have learned is that personal growth is my own experience,
- 3:33and I'm not only gonna experience it differently from everyone else.
- 3:38~ I can't expect everyone to be ready for personal growth at my speed
- 3:44or when I'm ready. And I think that was the one of the hardest lessons
- 3:48for me to learn because I'm like,
- 3:50I'm diving in, I'm ready for personal growth,
- 3:52and I want everyone else around me to be ready for personal growth.
- 3:57And that's not their story. They have to realize it.
- 4:00for themselves and be ready for themselves.
- 4:03And so I could choose to accept them as they is,
- 4:06meet them where they're at, and when they're ready,
- 4:08they're ready.
- 4:09So thinking about you, when you first decided to get involved
- 4:13in personal development or personal growth,
- 4:16what was the tipping point for you?
- 4:17So I know that you and I had talked about it.
- 4:19I was coaching people,
- 4:21But what was that tipping point?
- 4:23Because you're right. It has to be on your timetable.
- 4:26I remember another friend of mine when I came back from an event,
- 4:29I was sharing and all the things that I had learned.
- 4:32And sh and that friend said to me,
- 4:33Kimberly, you need to remember not everybody is on the same personal growth journey
- 4:39that you're on. And I was like,
- 4:40okay. And so, yeah, so when I do,
- 4:44it is personal. And so what was that tipping point for you that made you decide,
- 4:48you know what?
- 4:48I wanna get on my growth journey and with that I'm gonna hire a coach.
- 4:53Yeah. So for me, I think a lot of things started unfolding at the same time.
- 4:59I finished my hours for LPC,
- 5:03licensed professional counselor,
- 5:05and then I was like, what next?
- 5:08So between the what next and then always believing that I was made
- 5:14for more and that ~ I was built for greatness.
- 5:16And I didn't know what was that.
- 5:19Like, what was greatness? How was I gonna get there?
- 5:22I didn't know anything, but and I did know you.
- 5:27And just watching
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:29you and how you carried yourself and how you,
- 5:34you know, presented yourself, like I wanted more of you.
- 5:38Not like I wanted to be like you,
- 5:40but I just wanted to.
- 5:42Have that happiness, have that joy,
- 5:44have that I have my shit together and I'm going places.
- 5:49Just having that knowledge of knowing with all of what are my next steps
- 5:53and how am I gonna get there and the confidence that you exude.
- 5:57Like in in supervision, I remember you having me stand up
- 6:02and stand in a Wonder Woman pose.
- 6:05And I had never done that before,
- 6:08never heard of that, and never knew how powerful that was for me to actually
- 6:13do that and to, you know, represent such a courageous,
- 6:17powerful woman and to exude that.
- 6:19And I was like, yeah, I wanna be around her.
- 6:21I wanna, you know, I I I want to drink the Kool-Aid.
- 6:25I knew that a pose could
- 6:27Ha ha ha.
- 6:28have such an effect.
- 6:29Yeah, it really did.
- 6:30Yeah, so good. Okay, so I with that,
- 6:34because personal growth is so personal,
- 6:37so you made the decision. You you struck the Wonder Woman pose.
- 6:41I do remember that day vividly.
- 6:43You struck the pose. And I think,
- 6:45if I remember correctly, the first pose,
- 6:48I was like, make it a little more bold and a little more loud.
- 6:51And so you did, and from that you did.
- 6:54I remember. I mean, I know I've witnessed these steps that you've taken
- 6:59and the changes that you've made.
- 7:01And keeping in mind that personal growth is so personal.
- 7:04when you think back to that time,
- 7:06like really look in that rear-view mirror.
- 7:09Did it have some impacts, maybe negative,
- 7:12maybe positive, maybe a little neutral,
- 7:14impacts with the people around you?
- 7:17Absolutely. I laugh because I mean I think different perspectives will believe that
- 7:23it affected each one of us differently.
- 7:26However, absolutely. I feel comfortable sharing this story because recently
- 7:31my husband vocalized it and so I was like,
- 7:33okay, you're okay with sharing this story?
- 7:37Okay, what story is this? I wanna know.
- 7:38~ It was
- 7:40just that getting coached gave me my voice,
- 7:44right? Like coming from a background of sexual abuse,
- 7:48witnessing ~ drugs and alcohol abuse my entire life,
- 7:52I didn't have a voice. I was very codependent.
- 7:55I didn't know what love was. And so I accepted a lot of things because
- 7:59I just didn't know. and coaching helped me have
- 8:02have my voice and realize that I matter,
- 8:05I have a say, and that I don't have to take things that I don't want to take.
- 8:09Like I get to decide how I want to live my life,
- 8:12how I want to show up, and who I want around me.
- 8:15And so yes, coaching helped give me that voice to where I was able to vocalize that,
- 8:21hey, like I'm not going to take the disrespect.
- 8:23And you don't have to be on this personal growth journey with me and
- 8:28I'm still not gonna take the disrespect.
- 8:30and so that continued the disrespect.
- 8:33And so even after being married to my husband for eleven years,
- 8:38getting a divorce and being divorced for a year and a half,
- 8:41and then getting remarried during COVID,
- 8:44I made the decision to leave him again because he was not respecting that
- 8:48boundary that
- 8:49I choose to be respected when we have a conversation,
- 8:52when we have an argument. I didn't care.
- 8:54And ~ it definitely was a hard decision.
- 8:56It was not an easy decision. however,
- 8:58it was a decision that I felt I needed to make because he wasn't listening to me.
- 9:02And so yeah, I packed up my son and we left.
- 9:06We moved out and we stayed gone for two years,
- 9:09to where we were living apart,
- 9:11Thanks.
- 9:12living
- 9:12separately, and we had some
- 9:14some some things that we both have to work on in order for us to get back together.
- 9:19for us to be okay with cohabitating together peacefully.
- 9:24Not necessarily peacefully, 'cause I don't wanna to put out that it is
- 9:27all happy and sunshine and rainbows.
- 9:30Like we still have our days, but we're gonna have our arguments respectfully.
- 9:34Sure. Okay. So
- 9:36So the impact of your personal growth was what I'm hearing is that
- 9:41you were really recognizing what you wanted,
- 9:43how you wanted to be treated, how you wanted to treat people,
- 9:47and with that, you made a decision to separate from your husband.
- 9:51So he was listening or he wasn't listening,
- 9:54you made the decision. This is not the life that I want to be living,
- 9:58and therefore I'm going to remove myself from this living situation.
- 10:02Go ahead.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:03Okay. And so and right, I don't know.
- 10:06He might say that was a negative or positive,
- 10:09who knows? and I'm wondering if you've noticed some other ripple effects
- 10:13of your personal growth. The path that you've been on on this whole
- 10:17per personal growth and personal development journey,
- 10:19have you noticed some ripples that
- 10:22have not led to because you're it personal growth does usually change relationships.
- 10:27all relationships.
- 10:27Hundred percent.
- 10:29And so I'm curious, what other ripple effects have you noticed?
- 10:32Well, some friends have weeded themselves out of my life,
- 10:35for whatever reason.
- 10:37Time management is better, whereas ~ I I don't wanna say I demand,
- 10:42but I go by a schedule now. Go figure.
- 10:44Okay.
- 10:45Whereas I didn't have a schedule.
- 10:47Now I go by a schedule. And so I I do value my friendships and I do want
- 10:52to spend time with my friends.
- 10:53however, I want to put you on my schedule so that I can be intentional with that
- 10:58time. Like when I'm there, I want to give you my attention.
- 11:01and so for whatever reason, some friends have left.
- 11:04They, you know, have their own personal reasons.
- 11:07my son
- 11:08As a result of just surrounding myself with different people,
- 11:12he sparks conversations. So he's more vocal when it comes to talking to strangers.
- 11:18I am currently back at home, so I recently just moved back at home.
- 11:22So it is that ripple effect that you know we both worked on each other
- 11:26and we both figured it out and managed to work back into each other's life under
- 11:31one roof. So
- 11:31Yeah, that's awesome. Yes, and I've witnessed your son watching
- 11:35you spark conversations and then sparking himself,
- 11:39which has been outstanding to witness.
- 11:42Yes, 'cause
- 11:43whatever growth opportunity, personal growth,
- 11:46development that I can get him,
- 11:48my daughter, my husband to, I do.
- 11:51I invite them alone. It's theirs to accept or reject.
- 11:55And even when I invite them, they still receive the information that they receive.
- 11:59Yes, absolutely. So when people are on a personal growth,
- 12:03personal development journey, and recognizing again that it is personal
- 12:08to that person, what are some pieces of advice that you would give people
- 12:12so that it doesn't become like I'm doing all of this,
- 12:16this person's not doing it, therefore
- 12:18I'm ending it or it's over. Or anger and resentment toward the person that's
- 12:24not on that same path. What are some advice you would give?
- 12:26that seems more like it's about them than the other person.
- 12:30And so that's focused on others' growth rather than your growth.
- 12:34And for me, personal growth is your growth.
- 12:37Like I didn't leave my husband because he wasn't growing.
- 12:40I left my husband because the way he treated me,
- 12:43I no longer wanted to be treated that way.
- 12:46And
- 12:46I let him know, hey, that's not acceptable to me anymore.
- 12:50And he continued to do that. And so that's why I left.
- 12:53but I do believe that, you know,
- 12:56it's it's your journey, it's your walk.
- 12:58And that sounds more like an ultimatum.
- 13:01Like, you know, either you grow or I'm gone.
- 13:04Well, that's not fair, because you had to grow in your own time and you
- 13:09had to take your own strides.
- 13:11~ to get to where you at. So I think it's more so about setting healthy boundaries.
- 13:16And if that person is willing to work within your healthy boundaries,
- 13:20then there's still opportunity for growth in a relationship because that's growth.
- 13:25I love that you said that because saying that,
- 13:28you know, the person themselves they had to take the time or it took however long
- 13:33to get to the point to get on a personal growth path.
- 13:35And I love that you said that because one thing I like to remind myself is what if
- 13:41Everyone is growing every day and growth looks different.
- 13:45It looks different on you than it does on me.
- 13:47It looks different on the stranger that I met at the grocery store.
- 13:51Like what if we stopped and thought like a reframe of everybody's growing every
- 13:57day in one way or another, and it might be different.
- 14:01Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:02So I love that
- 14:03you brought that up.
- 14:04And who am I to judge their path and their way?
- 14:07Like again, it goes back to boundaries and how they're treating me and what
- 14:11I expect in a relationship. And if they're checking off that,
- 14:15then to me that's a plus. And if they're working on their growth or like you said,
- 14:20they're doing their own thing in their own ways,
- 14:22that's still
- 14:23growth.
- 14:23Mm-hmm. Yeah, and what I'm hearing from you is that it's not always about perfection
- 14:27or a person doing everything perfectly and just right.
- 14:30It is about the awareness. Like I think awareness is so important
- 14:35and having that personal awareness that ~ shoot.
- 14:38I said whatever and that's something that person didn't like and I ~
- 14:42I realized I said it after it came out of my mouth and I can't put it back
- 14:46and even though I can't put those words back in and swallow them,
- 14:49what can I do? And I can go acknowledge what I said or what I did.
- 14:54Yes. And I think perfection will stop people.
- 14:57Like if you're expecting perfection out of yourself or anyone,
- 15:01that's gonna stop you. I know it would stop me.
- 15:04I'm not perfect by any means. It's so for me I have to remind myself it's progress,
- 15:09right? Like I am making progress.
- 15:12I am one day better than I was yesterday.
- 15:14Mm-hmm. So how do you track that?
- 15:17To know that you're making progress.
- 15:19and again, this is your personal growth journey,
- 15:21and so I'd love for the listeners to hear how you track that.
- 15:25So if you're better today, one bit better,
- 15:27one step, one tidbit better today than you were yesterday,
- 15:31how do you know? How are you tracking it?
- 15:34Great question. And I think it really just depends on what you're working on.
- 15:39~
- 15:39Okay.
- 15:40for you to be able to track it and be able to know it.
- 15:43And so like I said intentions for my day.
- 15:46I have a six o'clock alarm that goes off that reminds me to be positive,
- 15:50present, and purposefully. And so at the end of the day,
- 15:54I have a reflection, right? Like,
- 15:56was I positive today? Was I
- 15:58living on purpose and was I present and if not,
- 16:02then I need to reflect and sometimes I do have to go back and apologize and say,
- 16:08Hey, you know what, that wasn't quite positive what I said.
- 16:11And by no means did I mean to be negative by saying those words and so I apologize.
- 16:17And so for me, that's my way of tracking like how many times did I have
- 16:21to go back and apologize?
- 16:22when I was with my family, was I intentional?
- 16:25Did I have my phone? Did I have my laptop out?
- 16:28So it's just personal things that I'm working on.
- 16:32Am I moving the needle? Am I progressing in that?
- 16:35Beautiful. Okay, so the reflection piece is how you're keeping track
- 16:39of your progress.
- 16:42Yes.
- 16:43Great. And so you talked about setting the intention each morning and
- 16:46you have that alarm that goes off.
- 16:48Does that alarm change or is that like set for life?
- 16:52Right now it's set for life for right now life.
- 16:55because I'm still working on that.
- 16:57I
- 16:57Okay.
- 16:57think once I master it, not perfect it,
- 17:01but master it, then it will change.
- 17:04Because it has changed. I can't remember what it used to be,
- 17:07but it has changed over the ~ years because I hadn't always needed to
- 17:12be where I'm at now. I needed to work on something else.
- 17:15And so now I'm
- 17:16Breaked on that and now I move towards this.
- 17:19That's so good. Okay, so you said not perfect it,
- 17:21but master it. A, what is the difference?
- 17:25And B, how will you know?
- 17:27Another great question. So when I think of master,
- 17:30I think of the star test, right?
- 17:32And there's
- 17:32~
- 17:33a score. I know. But there's a score,
- 17:36right? There's a range to me in my head that says you mastered it.
- 17:41It
- 17:41Okay.
- 17:41doesn't mean that you got a perfect SAT score.
- 17:44It just means that you got in the range that you absolutely without a doubt
- 17:49ha know what you're doing when it comes to this subject.
- 17:52And so
- 17:53Perfectionism is for me perfect,
- 17:56no mistakes. You do this all day,
- 17:58every day. This is what you do.
- 18:00Okay. And so how will you know for you personally?
- 18:03Again, personal growth is personal.
- 18:05So how will you know personally when you have mastered that morning intention
- 18:11of positive purpose and the third one present?
- 18:15Present. Present.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:18When it's not something it's second nature.
- 18:21It's not something I have to think about and be intentional about.
- 18:24So my reflection piece doesn't even have to come in the afternoon.
- 18:29It's more automatic right then and there in the moment.
- 18:31wait a minute. That's not how I want to show up.
- 18:33So let me rephrase that. Or even not even showing up like that anymore.
- 18:38Okay, awesome. Any other words or ideas that come up for you when
- 18:43you think about personal growth being personal?
- 18:47I believe greatness is in everyone.
- 18:49And so
- 18:49gosh.
- 18:50I just I believe that we just have to not just we we get to untap it,
- 18:56you know, you get to find it and figure out what does your greatness look like.
- 19:00Mm-hmm.
- 19:01And then show the world.
- 19:02So good. Awesome, Shuntá I'm so glad you joined us today
