- 1:12Speaker 2: We saw her.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Rosella's like you a model, a model.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You got to see her. I'm not a model. I'm
- 1:19Speaker 2: a singer. She's a bronx. That's it.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Okay, Well you you got the looks of one. So
- 1:25Speaker 4: who is it?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Jen?
- 1:26Speaker 5: Sabrina Burns my friend. She sings for the Cover Girls.
- 1:29Speaker 5: She is the girl.
- 1:31Speaker 2: She's one of my favorite people on the Yeah, I
- 1:35Speaker 2: love her. No, we really hang out.
- 1:36Speaker 5: Yeah, she's We became friends. We met through Brenda k Starr.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Another another freestyle artist was Brother Freestyle. I guess Brenda's
- 1:46Speaker 5: freestyle Spanish.
- 1:48Speaker 2: She's legendary. She's amazing. Yeah, she's amazing. Brenda. So that
- 1:53Speaker 2: we met and you became we've gone out. We've gone
- 1:57Speaker 2: I've gone out. Yes, we have gone. When I say
- 1:59Speaker 2: gone out, I'm like, yeah, yeah, we've.
- 2:02Speaker 5: Had Yeah, we had some fun, right, and she's got
- 2:06Speaker 5: an awesome family. A husband is one of the nicest
- 2:08Speaker 5: guys I've ever met in my life.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Is he in music?
- 2:11Speaker 6: No, he's an NYPD detective, so nothing me.
- 2:19Speaker 2: We met at a at a bar in New York.
- 2:24Speaker 2: So original.
- 2:25Speaker 6: But when I met him, I was going through a divorce,
- 2:29Speaker 6: I had chilled three children. I had a plan for
- 2:32Speaker 6: my next of life, and he had nothing to do
- 2:34Speaker 6: with it. Who he was, where he was in his life,
- 2:38Speaker 6: where he lived another borough.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Called Staten Island. I was like, yeah, I'm okay.
- 2:43Speaker 6: And I tried to give him all of that and
- 2:45Speaker 6: he pursued and he won me over.
- 2:48Speaker 2: How well were your kids when you met him?
- 2:51Speaker 6: I have twins who were I think they were eight,
- 2:55Speaker 6: so they were at a rough age, and then I
- 2:57Speaker 6: had sixteen or seventy.
- 3:00Speaker 2: My son was seventeen. So that's some beautiful man take
- 3:05Speaker 2: on three. And he was single.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Yeah, he was very, very single and kind of hot,
- 3:10Speaker 6: so he had there was no need. There was no
- 3:12Speaker 6: need for me in his bar. It was it was
- 3:16Speaker 6: called Bathtub Gin and it was like one of those
- 3:19Speaker 6: speakeasies were in the front. It was a coffee shop,
- 3:22Speaker 6: but then when you go to the bag, it's like that's.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Where we like, yeah, you were friends.
- 3:28Speaker 6: It was after a show at Radio City Music Hall.
- 3:31Speaker 6: I actually brought TK. We all had this like after.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Party kind of thing going on. Did he know you
- 3:37Speaker 2: who you were?
- 3:39Speaker 6: I think he did, but he's younger than me, so
- 3:41Speaker 6: it was not really for some guy who lived in
- 3:44Speaker 6: Staten Island, and it's.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Surprising like he didn't know because that's like a prerequisite.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Yeah guy in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Yeah exactly.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 5: I mean, like, do you feel and actually mentioning that
- 3:59Speaker 5: you feel that freestyle is just geared to to the
- 4:02Speaker 5: East coast or do you feel like it's.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Been becoming more so.
- 4:06Speaker 6: We recently did a show in Canada and I couldn't
- 4:09Speaker 6: believe the audience.
- 4:10Speaker 2: I couldn't believe Hi Yeah came out. It was a.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Beautiful concert and it was a really great crowd.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I was like, where did you guys come from?
- 4:19Speaker 5: Do you remember I sent you the video of the guy,
- 4:21Speaker 5: the freestyle guy that I was at in the Canada
- 4:23Speaker 5: member I was at the event, I recorded him and
- 4:27Speaker 5: I sent them to you and I said, freestyle is
- 4:28Speaker 5: live and welladach, Wow, it's just weird.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I was in LA this week and I said a song.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I was listening to a song and my friend was.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Like, what is that?
- 4:39Speaker 4: I forgot which song that was. I wish I knew.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I wish I could remember. And I said freestyle and
- 4:45Speaker 4: they're like, what is that? I was like, no, you
- 4:47Speaker 4: are kidding me right now in La and she's like, no,
- 4:50Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I said, you didn't have freestyle in La. They're like no,
- 4:54Speaker 2: but they did because we also did a show in La.
- 4:56Speaker 6: It was the biggest crowd we had about it was crazy,
- 5:00Speaker 6: about fifteen thousand people and they were sitting in there
- 5:04Speaker 6: was like a heat wave.
- 5:05Speaker 2: One hundred and three degrees and it.
- 5:08Speaker 6: Was us Brenda Key Star Betty D from Sweet Sensation.
- 5:12Speaker 6: It was a really nice expose was there. The crowd
- 5:15Speaker 6: was major. We don't go to LA too often, but
- 5:18Speaker 6: there's a little bit of a a vibe there.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Can I ask you a question? So freestyle? Okay, so
- 5:28Speaker 4: what were the years of freestyle? What was what was
- 5:30Speaker 4: the hey day?
- 5:31Speaker 6: I think it really really was birthed. I want to
- 5:35Speaker 6: say hardcore about eighty two and on.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, late nineties. Yeah, yes, where the hits.
- 5:47Speaker 6: I say that cautiously because there's still artists putting out freestyle,
- 5:51Speaker 6: new freestyle music. But it's hard because the crowd wants
- 5:55Speaker 6: to hear what they want to hear, right.
- 5:57Speaker 5: We want to hear the ones here show me. We
- 6:00Speaker 5: want to hear Maria, we want to.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Hear Stevie b saying you know what we want to
- 6:05Speaker 2: hear those?
- 6:06Speaker 5: That's what you want to hear when you go to
- 6:07Speaker 5: a freestyle concert, That's what you want to hear.
- 6:11Speaker 4: Yeah, So like that, That's what my question was segueing
- 6:14Speaker 4: segueing into is that how does one It's almost like
- 6:21Speaker 4: any iconic person singing I'm going to have a concert.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Let's just say, even you two, Frank Sinatra, I'll make
- 6:27Speaker 4: it that, make it that. Like you said, the crowd
- 6:30Speaker 4: wants you always to play why they fell in love
- 6:33Speaker 4: with you?
- 6:34Speaker 7: Right?
- 6:34Speaker 5: They want to they go see the stones. They want satisfaction. Yea,
- 6:37Speaker 5: they want to see.
- 6:39Speaker 2: They don't care about their they want the hits.
- 6:42Speaker 4: So how does now freestyle like really it's had its heyday?
- 6:50Speaker 4: How does the how do the freestyle artists get to
- 6:52Speaker 4: do their new stuff.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And be accepted for it?
- 6:57Speaker 4: And can freestyle have in the mindset that you will
- 7:00Speaker 4: once freestyle that's your niche, right, yeah, but you're so
- 7:05Speaker 4: much more than that as an artist. I can say, right,
- 7:08Speaker 4: I'm not just in every Italian movie.
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'm doing Mideia right now.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Yeah, people don't know that yet because I haven't put
- 7:15Speaker 4: it up yet.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I'm gonna be doing the play.
- 7:17Speaker 4: And so for you does I guess the singers have
- 7:21Speaker 4: to prove themselves and get it out there and say, look,
- 7:25Speaker 4: I'm I have more on the back burner, not just
- 7:28Speaker 4: you know, cover girls. In freestyle, you're you're an individual,
- 7:31Speaker 4: what a an artist? You know?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 7:35Speaker 1: You know?
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think with it's a tough.
- 7:39Speaker 6: It's tough because we're still creating music because we still
- 7:43Speaker 6: have that creative outlet.
- 7:45Speaker 2: We still want to continue creating new stuff.
- 7:47Speaker 6: To your point, we evolve, yes, and I think freestyle
- 7:51Speaker 6: has evolved into different kinds of sounds and music. But
- 7:56Speaker 6: I think what keeps us working is the fact that
- 8:01Speaker 6: our generation is still playing it for the next generation.
- 8:04Speaker 6: So we have little kids who are nine seven who
- 8:07Speaker 6: are coming up to and they know our music because
- 8:10Speaker 6: their parents play it right, because their parents are rocking
- 8:14Speaker 6: it at parties. And we're still you know, and you know,
- 8:16Speaker 6: we we don't. We're not wallflowers. Like anyone who likes freestyle.
- 8:20Speaker 6: They get up and dance. You're gonna hurt your back.
- 8:22Speaker 6: You can't hurt yourself old, and we still think, but
- 8:26Speaker 6: you know, this is what these kids are growing up. So,
- 8:29Speaker 6: you know, while we're trying to put out new music,
- 8:32Speaker 6: I think what I'm seeing the artists do now is
- 8:35Speaker 6: not only extend it to different sounds, but now just
- 8:39Speaker 6: outside of the artistry.
- 8:41Speaker 2: So you've got Judy Torres.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Touring, doing theater, doing You've got you've got people who
- 8:48Speaker 6: are writing books, people who are doing hip hop. I mean,
- 8:51Speaker 6: I've I've extended myself outside of just the music industry.
- 8:56Speaker 6: And I mean I was a writer too. Speaking of writing,
- 8:59Speaker 6: because it's you know, it's my passion. If you asked
- 9:01Speaker 6: me what I wanted to do, would I do all
- 9:04Speaker 6: over again?
- 9:04Speaker 2: I would do.
- 9:05Speaker 6: I would write write music, No, write, I would write
- 9:08Speaker 6: literature like I would love.
- 9:10Speaker 2: But that's not where we are right now.
- 9:13Speaker 6: I'm very grateful for the music, and I think that's
- 9:16Speaker 6: it's just people are just trying to figure out what
- 9:18Speaker 6: their next, yeah is, even outside of music. I mean,
- 9:23Speaker 6: the crowd is nice enough and kind in us and
- 9:26Speaker 6: they're very gracious. So when we I think they sit
- 9:28Speaker 6: there politely when we come out with a new song
- 9:31Speaker 6: and they're like, okay, great and as soon they're like, everybody,
- 9:35Speaker 6: thanks for letting me play this.
- 9:41Speaker 2: We see it. What do you mean you just recently
- 9:43Speaker 2: go see in Long Island? Was that with you? Oh?
- 9:46Speaker 2: That wasn't you?
- 9:47Speaker 4: It was, yeah, I think it was Judy Torres. Yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 4: and she was trying to sing new stuff. Nobody's like
- 9:53Speaker 4: I wrote this and singing it. Nobody on the dance
- 9:56Speaker 4: floor the minute she did coming whatever.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you couldn't even get on the dance floor yeah.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I mean we try. That's a tough we try. We try,
- 10:07Speaker 2: and it doesn't matter.
- 10:09Speaker 6: You know, it doesn't matter who you are, because Journey
- 10:12Speaker 6: can come out and like and we love Journey.
- 10:15Speaker 2: They want to.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Kids, that's it, that's said The Stones.
- 10:22Speaker 5: People want to. I want satisfaction. I don't care about
- 10:25Speaker 5: their new hit that they just there's at ninety five
- 10:27Speaker 5: years old.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I want to. Yeah, yep, that's it.
- 10:30Speaker 5: If I'm going to with Stones content and I don't
- 10:32Speaker 5: hear that, I'm gonna be.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Pistol off and I'm not going to go back to
- 10:36Speaker 2: the thing. No stop.
- 10:38Speaker 5: If they don't play my ship, no listen, I love
- 10:42Speaker 5: If they don't play what I want.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm not a fly by night thing. Thank god. She's
- 10:47Speaker 2: been to a lot of freestyle, so thank god. I
- 10:50Speaker 2: guess we give her what she wants. You don't. If
- 10:53Speaker 2: you don't put my head, you're not going to see her. Yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I love their shows. I always have fun.
- 10:59Speaker 5: I feel like I feel like a big shot when
- 11:01Speaker 5: I'm there because I'm always like in the front, I'm
- 11:03Speaker 5: by the stage and I'm like and it's so funny
- 11:06Speaker 5: because people just love them and you see it in
- 11:10Speaker 5: like when you're watching everybody like, and I'm sitting there
- 11:12Speaker 5: watching because I'm also like an observer. When I watch people,
- 11:14Speaker 5: I like to see how people act. I just see
- 11:17Speaker 5: how they're so enthralled in the show and they just
- 11:20Speaker 5: love it and they just it's the outlet.
- 11:23Speaker 2: They love it. Especially people of our generation.
- 11:26Speaker 5: It brings us back to being a kid and being
- 11:28Speaker 5: out there in the clubs and having fun when life
- 11:31Speaker 5: was so much more simple, you know. And it's like
- 11:33Speaker 5: it brings you back to that summer that I had
- 11:36Speaker 5: on eighty sixth.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Street with you know, my hair is high and hanging out.
- 11:40Speaker 5: With Vane on the did which was fine.
- 11:43Speaker 4: That it's funny you're saying that because you know, although
- 11:46Speaker 4: we are all older, right, It's just I know that
- 11:51Speaker 4: has something to do with it.
- 11:52Speaker 2: But I feel like we had life was so.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Fun in the eighties and ninety so much everybody was
- 11:59Speaker 4: seemed happier. And what we are we will now that
- 12:03Speaker 4: we got more and social media. I don't care what
- 12:06Speaker 4: any else does. Everything has a lot to do with
- 12:09Speaker 4: feeling shitty with mental health. Social media is is like
- 12:13Speaker 4: the double edged sword.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It is. It really is.
- 12:16Speaker 4: It's like the good, the bad, and the and and
- 12:20Speaker 4: we were just happier.
- 12:21Speaker 2: We were we were more connected. We were because you
- 12:25Speaker 2: know what, we didn't have connected. We know what, We're
- 12:27Speaker 2: too connected. Now that's the problem with too connected.
- 12:30Speaker 4: I think we're too disconnected, but we're too connected.
- 12:33Speaker 5: But that we have to let everybody know what we're
- 12:35Speaker 5: doing every second and have to see what's going on.
- 12:37Speaker 4: There's no mystery to anybody none, And I know what
- 12:40Speaker 4: everybody's doing.
- 12:41Speaker 5: But it's a lot of it's fake too, that's the
- 12:43Speaker 5: other problem. And then these kids they watch this and
- 12:46Speaker 5: they think like, oh my god, this person's life is
- 12:48Speaker 5: the phenomenal.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Meanwhile, I'm like, no, it's a lie. It's a lie.
- 12:51Speaker 6: My seven year old and this is a new phenomenon.
- 12:55Speaker 6: Everybody Like, so you ask her what she wants for Christmas?
- 12:58Speaker 6: She wants to for a gift car. Yes, it's all
- 13:02Speaker 6: skin yass, I said, what skincare?
- 13:07Speaker 2: That's what they see on social media. My heart breaks,
- 13:10Speaker 2: my heart. It is insane. I mean, I'm all about
- 13:13Speaker 2: the self care, but this.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Is now it's gonna starting botoxleen like that would shouldn't
- 13:20Speaker 5: you just be a kid and not worry about your skin?
- 13:23Speaker 2: You want to get dirty as a kid, go play
- 13:25Speaker 2: in the dirty Yeah, no, not her.
- 13:28Speaker 4: And this is also why we were healthier mental as
- 13:31Speaker 4: kids in the street, playing playing games, sick Bowl, whatever
- 13:35Speaker 4: the hell you played. Boys played football, you know in
- 13:39Speaker 4: the street. Yeah, base like they play sports now. But
- 13:43Speaker 4: everything's so controlled. We're out on our own exploring using
- 13:48Speaker 4: our imaginations.
- 13:49Speaker 6: How are we writing songs if we're not outside in
- 13:52Speaker 6: the street getting our hearts broken?
- 13:53Speaker 2: They used to what's happening? Where are these songs coming from?
- 13:57Speaker 6: The pain, the hurt, the hanging out with your friends,
- 13:59Speaker 6: like all of those are there's missing elements.
- 14:02Speaker 5: It's so missing because they don't know how to cope.
- 14:04Speaker 5: First of them are on a cope, that's one thing.
- 14:06Speaker 5: And they don't know how to handle things. And this
- 14:08Speaker 5: is their life, this is the.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Way they are.
- 14:11Speaker 5: And they look, I was, I sit and I and
- 14:14Speaker 5: I watched my daughter, my nineteenyear old daughter and her friends.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Even you know, throughout our high schools, there would be
- 14:19Speaker 5: ten of them sitting at the table and instead of
- 14:21Speaker 5: talking to each other, this is their role like this,
- 14:24Speaker 5: and they could be at the table dough test each other,
- 14:27Speaker 5: texting each other.
- 14:29Speaker 2: It's like, what are you doing?
- 14:31Speaker 5: Yeah, and listen, we all are guilty of it because
- 14:33Speaker 5: I know I am, and I spent hours on the
- 14:35Speaker 5: phone and I'm on my social media and I'm doing
- 14:37Speaker 5: things like that. But I'm starting to learn that I
- 14:39Speaker 5: have to put it down now because it's starting to
- 14:41Speaker 5: get to me.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's you. It affects me, and I don't like it.
- 14:46Speaker 5: We had a last guest talk about you know, issues
- 14:49Speaker 5: and that you know they kind of disconnected from the
- 14:52Speaker 5: social media too, because.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I think it brings you down and makes it down.
- 14:55Speaker 6: The breadt phone to listen while you guys were speaking,
- 14:58Speaker 6: because I was interested and one to hear what was
- 15:00Speaker 6: going on, and we put our phones down and just
- 15:03Speaker 6: listen and engauge, you know, from outside looking in, I
- 15:06Speaker 6: was able to engage.
- 15:07Speaker 2: I put my phone down and I just listened and
- 15:09Speaker 2: it was and it's nice to actually sit down and
- 15:12Speaker 2: do it.
- 15:12Speaker 5: I almost like, I hate to say it, because I
- 15:15Speaker 5: don't want social media disconnected because it's a block. You said,
- 15:18Speaker 5: it's a blessing and kurts, but I almost want them
- 15:20Speaker 5: to disconnect.
- 15:20Speaker 2: TikTok.
- 15:21Speaker 5: I feel like it's it's it's it's hurting these kids,
- 15:24Speaker 5: I really do. I really feel like it's hurting them.
- 15:27Speaker 5: I think for a seven.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Year old to talk about somep ads or for.
- 15:31Speaker 6: You know, skincare, it's and it's not just her, it's
- 15:34Speaker 6: all of her friends.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, I know because I have little nieces
- 15:38Speaker 4: and that's the thing. And I'm like, this to me
- 15:40Speaker 4: is so sad. I don't think it's cute. I listen,
- 15:44Speaker 4: I don't think it's Look like you said, we want
- 15:48Speaker 4: our kids to take care of themselves and their parents.
- 15:50Speaker 4: You want your you know, self care is important. But
- 15:54Speaker 4: at that age, I think.
- 15:56Speaker 5: It's they should be worrying about one thing, just being
- 15:59Speaker 5: a kid. That not worrying about who's doing what this
- 16:02Speaker 5: one and how this one looks, how that one looks.
- 16:04Speaker 5: It's just and it's not real. It's not real. It's
- 16:08Speaker 5: it's sad. It's just sad, you know.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But listen to us. We're talking like three old ladies.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I'm back in my day.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Well you know, but we had so much more fun.
- 16:17Speaker 5: We're saying that how much fun did we have? When
