Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Brain's Body Podcast.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: I'm Dr.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Christopher Kevin Slane, your host, and let's get started.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: Session one brain thinking begins with brain talk.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: To understand how your child thinks, learn how the brain leads the body.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: This is why you talk to your child's brain and not only to your child's body.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: The body wears states of mind.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: This is why parents are often pulled toward what they can see behavior, posture, tone, facial expression, resistance, or withdrawal.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: The body becomes the visible place where lived experience shows up first.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: But what the parent sees is not always where the child's experience begins.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: In human system science, the brain is the central organ of the body.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: The brain leads the neural response system while the body wears states of mind into visible form.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: This means the child's body may be showing signs of a state of mind, but the brain is still organizing contact, energy, action, feeling, and thought through brain, body, and sense messaging, the starting point.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Contact contact is not only touch.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Contact can be words, body contact, sense data, mood states, emotional energy, thought, or the lived interaction between the child and the adult.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Contact enters the child's receive path as the brain begins to organize what is being sensed, felt, and focused.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: When a parent speaks, the words carry more than language.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Words can carry neural energy.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: Emotion may influence thought, and thought may become a neural response to interaction.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: This is why brain talk begins before the parent corrects behavior.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Brain talk begins when the adult learns to sense how contact is being received.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Why behavior cannot be the starting point?
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: For years, many educational and parenting practices have been built around what can be seen and named as behavior.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: This can cause adults to look first at the body and interpret what the child is doing before sensing how the child's brain may be receiving the moment.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Human system science does not ignore the body, it relocates the starting point.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: The body is carrying states of mind, but the brain is leading the response system.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: When the adult talks only to the body, the adult may respond to the surface of the state.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: When the adult learns to talk to the child's brain, contact can become a pathway for focus, reflection, and organization.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: The sense, feel, focus loop.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: The sense-feel-focus loop is a human system science process loop.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: It begins when contact is received through brain, body, and sense messaging.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Sense opens the receive path.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: Feel gives contact lived experience.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Focus organizes the neural response so the brain can lead the body through brain talk.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Sense receives contact.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Feel forms the lived experience.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Focus organizes the neural response.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Together, they create the process loop where the brain leads the body and talks back through brain, body, and sense signals.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Working with a child upset by a major life event.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: When a child has been upset by a major life event, the body may not show clear signs of cooperation between brain and body.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: The child may be moving through emotional effects as contact becomes interaction between physical and neural engagement.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: The goal is to align the flow of emotion from sense contact with the flow of thought in received path interaction.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: This requires a sense of feel for the lived experience of interaction within the real-time exchanges between how the body acts and how the brain manages the flow of energy.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: In this moment, the adult does not begin by naming behavior.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: The adult begins by sensing contact, feeling the lived experience of interaction and allowing focus to form before response.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Stay tuned for session two of brain thinking.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: This is Brain Talk.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: How your brain talks about it.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening.
