- 0:10Speaker 1: And we're back. Thank you all for tuning in for
- 0:13Speaker 1: this week's episode. I'm Peanut, and as always, I got
- 0:16Speaker 1: my trusted guy room with me. What's up. Well, I
- 0:18Speaker 1: wouldn't say it's just an episode. This is a whole
- 0:20Speaker 1: experience right now. And before we jump into this experience,
- 0:24Speaker 1: all right, I want to first of all, thank all
- 0:25Speaker 1: of our listeners for tuning in as always, can you.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I want to make sure you guys give us a follow,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a rating, and a review wherever you listen to your
- 0:33Speaker 1: podcast at, whether it's Apple Podcast, I Heart Radio, or
- 0:37Speaker 1: anywhere else you get it. So with all that being said,
- 0:40Speaker 1: thank you again, and let's set the scene right now, Peanut,
- 0:43Speaker 1: we are at Super Bowl fifty seven Radio Row. This
- 0:47Speaker 1: is my first time. I've been here numerous times, it's
- 0:50Speaker 1: never done Radio Row. This is my first time. It's
- 0:52Speaker 1: kind of cool, it's early, it's kind of weird. I
- 0:55Speaker 1: don't like how security keeps checking my freaking bads. You
- 0:58Speaker 1: are getting a little get it gets a little chapped.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I'm a little chapped about this, all right, But we're
- 1:04Speaker 1: gonna get over it and we're gonna move on. So
- 1:07Speaker 1: Kansas City versus Philadelphia, it's already super Bowl fifty seven, Peanuts,
- 1:12Speaker 1: it's three days, six hours, and fifty minutes until the game.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I'm excited. Who you got? I got you? How did
- 1:18Speaker 1: you know? It was a big screen that? How did
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know that? So impressed? I'm a math guy. I'm
- 1:25Speaker 1: a math I want to university in LA like weth
- 1:30Speaker 1: all Day. Don't know it is a huge screen right here.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I did not see until right now. And Peanutic is correct.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Uh everything at UL is pretty good because I just
- 1:42Speaker 1: found out last night that Peanut was actually part of
- 1:46Speaker 1: the student government Association at UL. This man is a
- 1:50Speaker 1: pretty big time. He has his college ring on which
- 1:53Speaker 1: everybody gets confused for a super Bowl championship ring. I
- 1:56Speaker 1: let him know it. It's not a super Bowl ring. Yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 1: if they really looked at the details, they would know
- 2:00Speaker 1: that it's a college ring. Whatever did you do? You
- 2:04Speaker 1: have a college ring the national championship ring? And uh no,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we stuck when I was there if you know this,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and but I do have the real ring, so I'm
- 2:15Speaker 1: the one that I'm over too. Well. I didn't want
- 2:18Speaker 1: to go there. I was gonna kind of let it
- 2:20Speaker 1: just kind of happen over time that we talked about.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, this is super Bowl for the seven. Peanut
- 2:26Speaker 1: has been the two super Bowls. I have to I'm
- 2:28Speaker 1: over to year one. In one we lost one together. Yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and you take all the steam off all my jokes
- 2:34Speaker 1: when you say it first. But yes, Peanut is over too.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I am one of one. I hate you so much.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I try not to bring it up because I don't
- 2:43Speaker 1: think I would lose the Super Bowl if you weren't
- 2:45Speaker 1: on my team. But I wouldn't much rather be on
- 2:47Speaker 1: my team and me get to know. If I would
- 2:49Speaker 1: have played in the second one, I think we could
- 2:50Speaker 1: have won it. I mean if I started, I started all.
- 2:54Speaker 1: If I would have played, I think we'd work. But
- 2:56Speaker 1: we got some um, we got some important guests you know,
- 3:00Speaker 1: lined up this week. We got some We got some
- 3:02Speaker 1: stuff today. We got some stuff tomorrow. Uh. We got
- 3:05Speaker 1: Dion Sanders coming on. Uh, Brian Dawkins, one of my
- 3:09Speaker 1: former teammates, Brandon Marshall. We got a whole crew of
- 3:13Speaker 1: people lined up. So y'all gotta stay tuned in and
- 3:15Speaker 1: it's gonna be. We got some good stuff coming. I
- 3:17Speaker 1: can't wait to you know, Number one, I still don't
- 3:20Speaker 1: know how to address Dion, whether it's Prime Coach, Prime,
- 3:24Speaker 1: the MR. I mean, he's so legendary. He is what
- 3:28Speaker 1: every dB looked up to. He's literally on my wall.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I just call him Dean. Yeah, I just I don't know, man,
- 3:35Speaker 1: But I'm still kind of nervous. But anyways, so when
- 3:39Speaker 1: I meet Hall of famers, I get really nervous. That
- 3:42Speaker 1: was probably about the most normal I've been, you know,
- 3:46Speaker 1: like I'm yeah, I just I get nervous. I'm like, man,
- 3:49Speaker 1: this this is a goal. This is a gold jacket.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I know people get nervous with like Rhanna and man,
- 3:55Speaker 1: gold jacket ain't but a hundred three hundred something like that.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So magic, pan up when you get the call, because
- 4:01Speaker 1: I'll be there, um not in the Hall of Fame,
- 4:04Speaker 1: but when you get the call for you to go
- 4:06Speaker 1: to the Hall of Fame, hope. So will you be
- 4:08Speaker 1: nervous when you look at yourself in the mirror, like damn,
- 4:11Speaker 1: Like look at that guy, like are you gonna practice it?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Are you gonna wear it? Or like my coat, I'm
- 4:16Speaker 1: wearing my coat to go to the gas station. I'm
- 4:20Speaker 1: it's I'm I'm a one. That thing in the middle
- 4:22Speaker 1: of damn January in Chicago. I'm gonna get some gas
- 4:26Speaker 1: in my coat, Like I'm I am not taking the record,
- 4:30Speaker 1: not taking it off for a year. They're gonna have
- 4:34Speaker 1: to give me multiple I'm I'm wearing it with it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I got my coat on right now. I also want
- 4:38Speaker 1: to know, do they when you get a gold jacket, like,
- 4:42Speaker 1: do you just take that to the cleaners? Do you
- 4:44Speaker 1: ever get it dirty? Do you do you ever do
- 4:47Speaker 1: things where all these these things would happen. I think
- 4:50Speaker 1: that's a very uh a good question. I don't know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: maybe we'll find out at some point in time. Well, anyways,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it. Today, we're gonna it is
- 5:00Speaker 1: Thursday before the super Bowl. We're gonna have a special
- 5:03Speaker 1: episode released today. We're gonna release another one tomorrow, and
- 5:07Speaker 1: then we're also gonna release one on Saturday before the
- 5:11Speaker 1: super Bowl. So three episodes coming up for you. We're
- 5:14Speaker 1: very thankful. I can't wait to get all these guests
- 5:16Speaker 1: out here. It's gonna be a great time and I'm
- 5:18Speaker 1: gonna enjoy Radio Rod for my first time. So me
- 5:20Speaker 1: and Peanut, let's go and get it and uh, let's
- 5:22Speaker 1: have a good time, bro and stay tuned because we've
- 5:24Speaker 1: got Dion coming up. We're joined by Hall of Fame
- 5:31Speaker 1: NFL cornerback and now head football coach of the University
- 5:35Speaker 1: of Colorado, Mr Dion You know what you do? You think?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hey man, we just we're trying to follow suit. You know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: we appreciate it. First of all, let's just be honest.
- 5:46Speaker 1: If you're a defensive back in the world at any
- 5:49Speaker 1: point time, that's my age or probably younger. Now that
- 5:52Speaker 1: you look up to Dion Sanders, you are, you are
- 5:56Speaker 1: the man you are. I had to release the Hall
- 5:59Speaker 1: of Fame. I had to shoes. I got him in,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I got and we got right now. Yeah, I got
- 6:04Speaker 1: the red and one you had him in San Francisco.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Thought that was the best color combo out of all
- 6:09Speaker 1: of them, really hot ones. And I didn't do the
- 6:11Speaker 1: strap either. I would not strap. I would not. You
- 6:14Speaker 1: was laming if you strapped it completely. Well, you know
- 6:16Speaker 1: the strap was because we had I used to spat.
- 6:19Speaker 1: We all sat up up so that situated the dispatch.
- 6:24Speaker 1: So it was always a purpose to everything. I used
- 6:26Speaker 1: it for basketball shoes, Oh that was that was my thing.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I used it for basketball, but I ain't even playing mine.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I bought mine when I was like, I ain't nothing
- 6:32Speaker 1: of them and it was too big. You know, you
- 6:34Speaker 1: brought him in junior, don't grow and it just I
- 6:38Speaker 1: just hung on to him though. It's all good though,
- 6:40Speaker 1: but Prime, I would can we call you Prime man?
- 6:45Speaker 1: Thank you appreciate it? All right? This is your question
- 6:48Speaker 1: that a lot of people on the outside want to know,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and I would love to know your opinion too, because
- 6:52Speaker 1: it's something about when you talk to more old school
- 6:54Speaker 1: guys in football versus new school guys getting credit. This
- 6:57Speaker 1: another who are your top five defensive players of all time?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Not getting an order I'm not getting because somebody's gonna
- 7:06Speaker 1: be sensidive because when I said, they get sencidive. That's
- 7:08Speaker 1: why I've never ranked dvs rank. I do like L
- 7:13Speaker 1: T S lists. I think it's it's misguided where I stand,
- 7:19Speaker 1: but I do like it. I do like it. That's
- 7:21Speaker 1: why we asked you because LT said number one was
- 7:24Speaker 1: l T all right, of course, which I hope you
- 7:27Speaker 1: would put yourself. One. Two was Reggie White, three Deacon Jones.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Then he had four Dion Sanders and then five Nie
- 7:34Speaker 1: So at least you were the first defensive back. Yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 1: I like that. Shoot it's man just thinking about these
- 7:43Speaker 1: type of players. It's some guys that really change. You
- 7:45Speaker 1: can't get on the list unless you really changed the game.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Change the game. You gotta change the game. Meyl blunt us,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Come on, Manyl, he changed the game. They changed the
- 7:57Speaker 1: rules because of male blunt his physicality. Shoot, that's who
- 8:00Speaker 1: you were, y'all were male blunts, you know. Yeah, well
- 8:06Speaker 1: that's what Peanut does, all right. So I gotta just
- 8:10Speaker 1: know because now you see, I gotta go off to
- 8:13Speaker 1: go off a little bit. Now, Tiffany's is trying to
- 8:16Speaker 1: do a little whistle thing. Yeah, they're trying to bring
- 8:20Speaker 1: out a whistle as a necklace. Now they don't know
- 8:23Speaker 1: who did it first. They do, I will know. I
- 8:26Speaker 1: want the people who did it first, because as a coach,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you gotta war your whistle. I don't know how you
- 8:33Speaker 1: coach with that whistle. I've been wearing my whistle since
- 8:36Speaker 1: my boys are young. And I said, you know what,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I'm I'm coached. Now, I'm validated like the like the
- 8:41Speaker 1: check on the ground. I'm validated as a coach. Now
- 8:44Speaker 1: I gotta take the whistle to theother level. I hear that,
- 8:46Speaker 1: so I put you know, the goal. What's with the
- 8:47Speaker 1: Damna's in it? Now? Prime, here's another question. Now, I
- 8:55Speaker 1: want you to give us a deep dive in just
- 8:57Speaker 1: in who you are and what you want your legacy
- 8:59Speaker 1: to be as a coach. As a coach, as you said,
- 9:02Speaker 1: that is it? What is it getting guys to the league?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Is it getting guys paid? Is graduating all your players? Like?
- 9:08Speaker 1: What exactly if I win a national championship? I'm sorry,
- 9:15Speaker 1: when when I win a national championship and we don't
- 9:19Speaker 1: graduate seven percent kids? Did I win? So? When we
- 9:25Speaker 1: win a national championship, ninety seven percent of your kids graduate,
- 9:29Speaker 1: but fifteen of them are having kids, you know, before marriage,
- 9:35Speaker 1: and you know they're not ready to be fathers. Did
- 9:37Speaker 1: I win? It's so many different aspects of winning. You
- 9:40Speaker 1: gotta really seriously take a look at that. And mine
- 9:43Speaker 1: is is like the wholeness of a person. I want
- 9:46Speaker 1: these guys that went on the field, off the field,
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the community and at home um as well as
- 9:50Speaker 1: in the classroom. That's a win for me. So it's
- 9:53Speaker 1: it's the entire man to develop the entire human being
- 9:57Speaker 1: to get him to the next level that he can't
- 9:59Speaker 1: even fat them right now, that's a win. It next
- 10:02Speaker 1: level in life. Not even just nine of these kids
- 10:06Speaker 1: ain't going to pros. So I focus is on the nine.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The five got this, five y'all, y'all had this. Yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I gotta make sure I put my efforts in my
- 10:16Speaker 1: staff and my team to make sure that ninety five
- 10:19Speaker 1: is ready for the world. Now when did you and
- 10:21Speaker 1: I know at some point you said you realize it
- 10:24Speaker 1: was too much like getting shined on yourself, and you
- 10:28Speaker 1: made the conscious decision to try to shine or not
- 10:31Speaker 1: excuse me, try to shine like on others. At what
- 10:34Speaker 1: moment in time or in your life did you make
- 10:36Speaker 1: that decision? It's always been like that, honestly, because I
- 10:39Speaker 1: understand I had to build a brand to make sure
- 10:41Speaker 1: I take care of my mother and secure my mother
- 10:43Speaker 1: for the rest of the life. That I promised it
- 10:44Speaker 1: when I was seven. But in the journey of building that,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I've always looked out for this one or that one,
- 10:51Speaker 1: of this one of the family or this one. I've
- 10:53Speaker 1: always done that with my teammates as well as the community.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I've always been that way. But people don't want to
- 11:00Speaker 1: hear that. When you pray, they won't prime. They didn't
- 11:02Speaker 1: want du So that's the dichotomy of that I got you,
- 11:06Speaker 1: So tell us what you are doing with OI close.
- 11:09Speaker 1: First of all, I'm excited. I'm happy, um elated that
- 11:12Speaker 1: this is our second year straight. We had a Supervow
- 11:14Speaker 1: Commercion commercial, but we up to Annie because this year
- 11:18Speaker 1: it involves the entire family. God just my mama and
- 11:21Speaker 1: my son who's the quarterback, but my other son, my daughter,
- 11:25Speaker 1: my sister, and it's something that we always do. We compete,
- 11:29Speaker 1: you know, we could. I'm just compete, you know, and
- 11:32Speaker 1: that's what we're doing. So we're competing right now. And
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm happy that we found a brand that could just
- 11:37Speaker 1: take who we are and what we are and how
- 11:38Speaker 1: we are in turning it into a commercial, especially for
- 11:41Speaker 1: Super Bowl in the African American family. Dad, That's what
- 11:43Speaker 1: I like. I love that And not only that, but
- 11:45Speaker 1: I just wish you to say that I got mama. Mama. Now, oh,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I just said that, you know, I was trying to
- 11:51Speaker 1: I was trying to be writing up. Y'all are so articulate.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to clean it up. You know, y'all ain't
- 11:56Speaker 1: just regularly both. I've been saying both all day. Both
- 12:00Speaker 1: stuff florid. Yeah know that my guy rights, like I talked,
- 12:05Speaker 1: so you know, and this is the last thing. And
- 12:09Speaker 1: I gotta be selfish here because I said this before
- 12:11Speaker 1: the interview. How the research I did on my man Primes,
- 12:14Speaker 1: the e k Emmanuel cons for all this that don't know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: like me who did not know that Primes favorite glasses,
- 12:23Speaker 1: that's what that wore. And your elder son lost your
- 12:25Speaker 1: favorite pair, yes, like the look back, like the iconic
- 12:28Speaker 1: look back when I had on, like the reverse Jackett.
- 12:31Speaker 1: When I was leaving to get ready to go, get
- 12:32Speaker 1: to play and play the two sports he loves, I
- 12:36Speaker 1: gave him those. Man, my kids have lost so much stuff.
- 12:39Speaker 1: The old jury that I had, he has lost five
- 12:43Speaker 1: thousand dollars. It don't seem like a lot, but then
- 12:46Speaker 1: the five thousand dollars watches, you know, just just stupid
- 12:48Speaker 1: stuff that so do you know, like forgetting the money.
- 12:51Speaker 1: The sentimental part of this, like I handed this to
- 12:54Speaker 1: you like you was the prince baby, you the bag.
- 12:59Speaker 1: They just they if you don't earn it, you don't care,
- 13:03Speaker 1: be good they to earn it. This is good advice.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna let my son watch this. And he said,
- 13:10Speaker 1: not need great as to be honest with your kids.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I'm honest with am I telling where they rank that,
- 13:16Speaker 1: I tell them who I care about the most. Like
- 13:18Speaker 1: you this month, you're like fifth. Yeah, ranking put does
- 13:23Speaker 1: that and he does a really good job, not that great.
- 13:26Speaker 1: You gotta rank them. You gotta let him know what
- 13:27Speaker 1: they're staying. All your life, hadn't you been ranked, been
- 13:30Speaker 1: subjected to criticism? They need that because guess what you're
- 13:36Speaker 1: raising them? You you you raised you want a dog,
- 13:38Speaker 1: but you're raising cats. Yeah, okay, you want a dog,
- 13:41Speaker 1: but you're raising kids. My youngest is a dog. He
- 13:46Speaker 1: lives in a cat environment. So you better make sure
- 13:48Speaker 1: because the environment you grew up was totally different and
- 13:51Speaker 1: that's why you where you are. So you're raising you
- 13:54Speaker 1: want a dog, but we're raising cats. So you get
- 13:57Speaker 1: to be hard on them at some point in time.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Let's go. I'm just trying to come out to Colorado.
- 14:03Speaker 1: You know you want specialists. Well, if you if I
- 14:06Speaker 1: could teach all your dvs how to pin up when
- 14:08Speaker 1: you First of all, people don't understand for you to
- 14:11Speaker 1: do what you did successfully, you had to be there.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's what they don't get you couldn't make
- 14:16Speaker 1: a play unless you were there, understood. Okay, that's what
- 14:19Speaker 1: they forget about. You were there to make they play.
- 14:22Speaker 1: You can't do that if you're not there. So I
- 14:24Speaker 1: want you when you come and putting you to work,
- 14:26Speaker 1: you believe that let's do it. I'm walking away. I'm
- 14:29Speaker 1: letting y'all do your thing. I'm promise you that I'm ready.
- 14:32Speaker 1: You know. The Disturban is there too. Yeah. D T
- 14:35Speaker 1: was my d C. And Jackson so he's an analyst
- 14:39Speaker 1: as well, So I had to take care of my
- 14:40Speaker 1: dog's Yeah, he's there too. So we gotta we gotta
- 14:43Speaker 1: play through of guys that from from the old school
- 14:45Speaker 1: that could really enjoy that everything that you've done. Uh,
- 14:48Speaker 1: not only bless the the young men who you're coaching,
- 14:51Speaker 1: but also the coaching staff. And just continue to shine
- 14:54Speaker 1: like man. Whenever it's beautiful. It reminds me of uh.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And I never compare my younger daughter to you, but
- 15:00Speaker 1: one thing I always tell her and I would tell you,
- 15:03Speaker 1: is that when you shine, it literally allows so many
- 15:05Speaker 1: others to signs as well. So continue to let your
- 15:09Speaker 1: lighte be great continution because we need that as well,
- 15:13Speaker 1: because what we're doing that thing and some bulli junk happens,
- 15:15Speaker 1: which bull junk happens about four times a year, each yeah,
- 15:18Speaker 1: each quarter. Yeah, And we need folks to have that
- 15:20Speaker 1: back because y'all know what time it is. Appreciate being done,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and I appreciate you all for keeping it one hundred.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Thank thank you for joining us. Appreciate, appreciate you, Thank
- 15:28Speaker 1: you so much. Look at clean trying to be like ya.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The custom dbs and changed the game. They used to
- 15:34Speaker 1: think we can articulate that s but not looking at us.
- 15:38Speaker 1: We everywhere. Thanks for appreciate. We gotta pay some bills.
- 15:43Speaker 1: But before we go, we're honoring Black History Month troil
- 15:47Speaker 1: Blazers past and present. And here's NFL legend Max Strong
- 15:52Speaker 1: honoring Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis in nineteen sixty one.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Ernie Davis was the first African American Heisman Trophy winner.
- 16:06Speaker 1: As we continue to celebrate Black History Month across the league,
- 16:09Speaker 1: we shared the accomplishments of the past and the president
- 16:13Speaker 1: Davis High School, All American followed the Jim Brown's footsteps
- 16:17Speaker 1: and starting at Syracuse University, Warren Brown's number forty four
- 16:21Speaker 1: Jersey Davids put together a dominant senior year, which garnered
- 16:25Speaker 1: him Heisman recognition. He was drafted number one overall by
- 16:28Speaker 1: Washington in nineteen sixty two before joining his hero Jim
- 16:32Speaker 1: Brown and Cleveland be a trade. Unfortunately, before Davids could
- 16:36Speaker 1: play in an NFL game, he developed leukemia, an illness
- 16:39Speaker 1: that would end his life tragically at mandaids of twenty three.
- 16:43Speaker 1: His number forty five jersey is still retired to this day.
- 16:58Speaker 1: All right, we're back the episode here and we're back
- 17:02Speaker 1: at Super Bowl fifty seven at Radio Row. We have
- 17:05Speaker 1: a great guest today, well this time with Mike Golic,
- 17:10Speaker 1: NFL veteran, former NFL veteran, Eagles great and broadcast extraordinaire.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And you know you're great when all of a sudden
- 17:19Speaker 1: they start drafting your kids right behind you into the
- 17:21Speaker 1: same business. Yeah, that's pretty cool. But I love good coaching.
- 17:25Speaker 1: This is well, you know, if only he would admit that,
- 17:28Speaker 1: it's amazing he got into this business. My son, Mike,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and I thought he would be on like bended knee.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Oh father, teach me the profession man. That dude came
- 17:36Speaker 1: after me right away. I mean just just disagreeing with
- 17:40Speaker 1: everything I was saying. I'm like, dude, come on, so
- 17:42Speaker 1: when you do, you give him some advice. Now I
- 17:44Speaker 1: give him bad advice the way he's coming after me. No, no, no,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I definitely do, but but I give him some But
- 17:50Speaker 1: he's really learned along the way. You know. It was
- 17:52Speaker 1: one of those where I was a tenth rounder. Again
- 17:54Speaker 1: back when there were twelve rounds. I was going to say, yeah, exactly,
- 17:59Speaker 1: yeah there and even before that there were seventeen rounds. Yeah,
- 18:03Speaker 1: that's how old I am. So what you were drafted?
- 18:05Speaker 1: What year? Tenth rounder? Mike was an undrafted free agent,
- 18:10Speaker 1: So we all we came from the boy you gotta,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you know, bust your hump to get a job and stuff.
- 18:16Speaker 1: So you just basically carry that over. We just carried
- 18:19Speaker 1: that over into this and you know, tried to try
- 18:21Speaker 1: to try to make it. Five was a good year
- 18:23Speaker 1: for the Bears, a good year to get drafted. It
- 18:25Speaker 1: was that will you know, we did not. William Perry
- 18:28Speaker 1: was in my draft. Of the first pick my year
- 18:30Speaker 1: was Bruce Smith. He was a number one pick. He
- 18:33Speaker 1: was number one. I was number two fifty five, So
- 18:35Speaker 1: that was a little different. The only thing we had
- 18:37Speaker 1: in common was two things we played the same position
- 18:40Speaker 1: and we were drafted the same year. Other than that,
- 18:42Speaker 1: our our carreers went different past so I got so
- 18:46Speaker 1: was it eight? I think it was eight? Eight Fall Balls, Eagles,
- 18:51Speaker 1: Big Bears. Yeah. I couldn't see maybe ten fifteen yards
- 18:55Speaker 1: the during that game because they didn't want to postponent
- 18:58Speaker 1: I remember being on fielding the rough the stand in
- 19:00Speaker 1: the fifty yard line and he was talking in his
- 19:02Speaker 1: microphone to the to the upstairs and he said, yes,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I can see both goal posts from here. I looked
- 19:08Speaker 1: at me and I said, what the hell are you
- 19:09Speaker 1: looking at, dude? I can't see fifteen yards that way.
- 19:12Speaker 1: There'd be a play to the outside and the person
- 19:14Speaker 1: would disappear, but they didn't want to postpone it. So
- 19:17Speaker 1: whoever was going to be ahead in that game by
- 19:20Speaker 1: the time it rolled in was gonna win. And that
- 19:22Speaker 1: was yeah. So what's what's your fondest memory of that
- 19:26Speaker 1: of that of that game? Nothing, because we lost and
- 19:30Speaker 1: I couldn't see anything. I mean, it was it was
- 19:33Speaker 1: probably a memory, and I guess it wouldn't be a
- 19:36Speaker 1: fond memory. Is Listen, we've all played a long time,
- 19:39Speaker 1: whether Little League all the way through the NFL, so
- 19:42Speaker 1: we played in snow, sleet, rain, all wind. I have
- 19:46Speaker 1: never seen anything like that. When we all saw the
- 19:48Speaker 1: fog rolling in off the lake. First we thought it
- 19:52Speaker 1: was fireworks and smoke from that, but then it just
- 19:54Speaker 1: kept coming in and all of a sudden we were engulfed.
- 19:56Speaker 1: It was something none of us on either team had
- 19:59Speaker 1: ever seen any buddy throw the ball right, yes, yes, yes,
- 20:04Speaker 1: short passes, okay, because there would be. They tried a
- 20:07Speaker 1: couple of longer passes, and I kid you not. You know,
- 20:10Speaker 1: you're you're rushing and then they throw the ball and
- 20:12Speaker 1: you look and you just see the ball disappear, and
- 20:14Speaker 1: you literally don't know the For all I know, the
- 20:17Speaker 1: ball could have bounced right into a receiver's hands and
- 20:20Speaker 1: they could have said it was a reception. Had no
- 20:22Speaker 1: idea it was. It was crazy store alone. It's gonna
- 20:25Speaker 1: bounce off the ground. But I'm a pick it up act.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And let me tell you, I think of what you
- 20:29Speaker 1: could have got away with no more contact contact. You're
- 20:34Speaker 1: doing that anyway, right? You got to nowadays with the
- 20:39Speaker 1: way the rules are. That's true. You want any kind
- 20:41Speaker 1: of edge you can get as a defense you're trying
- 20:42Speaker 1: to take you guys are The worst position at all
- 20:45Speaker 1: is secondary guys. Now, it's horrible the line is now
- 20:48Speaker 1: considering what you have to do with the quarterback, I mean,
- 20:51Speaker 1: if it could today. Yeah, that's the question I wanted
- 20:55Speaker 1: to come at you with was would you like? How
- 20:57Speaker 1: would you like? What is your opinion on if you
- 20:59Speaker 1: had to play in days era? So I was raised.
- 21:02Speaker 1: You know, my dad played football in the Canadian Football League.
- 21:06Speaker 1: He's a former Marine, big, strong, tough dude. And the
- 21:09Speaker 1: way they taught football back then was when you tackle somebody,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you run through them and you land on him and
- 21:14Speaker 1: try and plan them. That was legal. You know people
- 21:16Speaker 1: might hear that and go, oh my god, but that
- 21:18Speaker 1: was what you did. We had a guy, Clyde Simmons
- 21:22Speaker 1: who would come off the edge and he would we
- 21:24Speaker 1: call it the tuck, suck and drop. He would tuck
- 21:27Speaker 1: the quarterback's arm and suck him up and drop him right.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He separated three one again. It's that that's the technique.
- 21:36Speaker 1: But you were to do it now, I mean, I
- 21:39Speaker 1: think it's so unfair a for dbs they have to
- 21:42Speaker 1: pull off the way they do, and for d lineman
- 21:45Speaker 1: when you're tackling a guy, what the hell are you
- 21:46Speaker 1: supposed to do. I'm supposed to twist in mid air,
- 21:49Speaker 1: so I don't land on him. It's earlier. I understand
- 21:52Speaker 1: the safety part of it, but I think they're breaking
- 21:56Speaker 1: too many eggs to make this omelet of times for sure.
- 21:58Speaker 1: For sure. So you've been in success with TV radio
- 22:03Speaker 1: pod play by play, like, what's been ultimately your your
- 22:08Speaker 1: favorite platform that you've been doing well from from? It's
- 22:12Speaker 1: interesting I'll answer this way. First. People always say, do
- 22:15Speaker 1: you want to be remembered more as a football player broadcast?
- 22:17Speaker 1: I said, are you kidding me? I said, I've never
- 22:19Speaker 1: woken up from a dream and said, oh my god,
- 22:21Speaker 1: what a great segment that was. It was always man
- 22:24Speaker 1: with a great hit I had in that quarter. As
- 22:27Speaker 1: far as broadcasting, I love doing a daily live show,
- 22:30Speaker 1: especially in the morning, because people are on their way
- 22:33Speaker 1: to work. I'd like to make them laugh a little bit,
- 22:35Speaker 1: maybe take them inside the locker room or on the field.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But in all honestly, I would say doing color commentary
- 22:41Speaker 1: for games because now you're at the game, you're still
- 22:43Speaker 1: kind of involved in the game, You're still involved with
- 22:45Speaker 1: the players. So for this one, like I do the
- 22:48Speaker 1: the the call for Westwood One, the national radio partner
- 22:51Speaker 1: for the NFL. So I'll be in on the in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the call for this game for the Super Bowl. So
- 22:55Speaker 1: it's it's a lot of fun. I love being involved
- 22:58Speaker 1: like that. I think I saw one of your first
- 23:00Speaker 1: TV gigs back. I want to say when you first retired,
- 23:04Speaker 1: and I think you you hosted like a Bloopers did. Yes,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I did. I used. I used to watch that. I
- 23:10Speaker 1: hosted that that I was I was playing with the Eagles,
- 23:13Speaker 1: we still playing host. I was playing at hosting. I
- 23:16Speaker 1: would do a lot of that in the off season. Uh,
- 23:18Speaker 1: we'd get a lot of shows in the camp. One
- 23:20Speaker 1: year we did ten shows in Hawaii. I'm like, hell,
- 23:22Speaker 1: sign me up for this every year. But yeah, that
- 23:24Speaker 1: was a lot of fun. That's kind of what got
- 23:26Speaker 1: me going. And I did a piece when I was
- 23:29Speaker 1: in Philly. You know, the quarterbacks get the shows they
- 23:32Speaker 1: I had a piece on the Randall Cunningham Show and
- 23:34Speaker 1: it so we were just a segment on his I
- 23:38Speaker 1: was a segment on his show, Right Time, Right Place
- 23:41Speaker 1: At won a local Lemmy And that's when the ESPN
- 23:43Speaker 1: called and said, hey, we know you're still playing in
- 23:45Speaker 1: the off season. You want to do some stuff with us.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And and then when I was retired by the league,
- 23:50Speaker 1: when nobody called anymore, luckily ESPN called at that at
- 23:53Speaker 1: that point, Yeah, I definitely know that when when no,
- 23:56Speaker 1: you don't want to retire, but you don't get that
- 23:58Speaker 1: call and you're you're you're waiting for it. That's well,
- 24:01Speaker 1: that's why I people asked me what year you're retired.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I said, well, the league retired me. Yeah. Totally hate that.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So you gotta you got a family podcast right, yes, yes,
- 24:11Speaker 1: sorry in advance, which we like to apologize to the
- 24:14Speaker 1: people before they listen. Yes, it's my wife who got
- 24:18Speaker 1: this single. And it's my wife, myself, my son Mike,
- 24:20Speaker 1: my son Jake, his wife Jenny, and my daughter Sydney
- 24:23Speaker 1: and her her husband Ben Bronncker. He played at Harvard,
- 24:27Speaker 1: he played five years with the Mayors, a tight end
- 24:29Speaker 1: and now he's in med school. Real underachiever. Uh yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 1: dude's really smart. But we have this and we just
- 24:35Speaker 1: kind of go, it's not even sports, I mean, and
- 24:38Speaker 1: that's when we find out that, like my daughter in
- 24:40Speaker 1: law and my daughter say some really dumb stuff, you know,
- 24:43Speaker 1: and we laugh at them and laugh with him. It's
- 24:45Speaker 1: just plus it's a great time every couple of weeks
- 24:48Speaker 1: just to kind of get us all together. You told
- 24:50Speaker 1: me earlier story about it was that you learned that
- 24:53Speaker 1: your daughter in law about rotating times. Well, so my
- 24:56Speaker 1: daughter in law thought, rotating tires meant you take it
- 24:58Speaker 1: to the garage, you put it up on the jacks,
- 25:01Speaker 1: and you just spin the tires. And we were like,
- 25:05Speaker 1: what was gonna happen to the tires? I don't know,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you just keep spinning them till they're even I'm like,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I don't I don't know the thought process of that.
- 25:13Speaker 1: But but she she was, and quite honestly, obviously nowadays
- 25:17Speaker 1: you throw it out to Twitter, there were a lot
- 25:19Speaker 1: of people that agreed. They were like, yeah, that's what
- 25:21Speaker 1: I thought. It was too. I'm like, oh my god, Okay,
- 25:24Speaker 1: it's like wow, I said, because you imagine, just put
- 25:27Speaker 1: it up on the jack, spin the tires, all right,
- 25:29Speaker 1: that will be a hunter bucks. We're ready to go.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Your wife must be batting a thousand right now. Because
- 25:34Speaker 1: it was her I did to come up with this podcast,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and then I saw a recent uh video you did
- 25:40Speaker 1: an interview. It was her who picked for Michael Mike
- 25:43Speaker 1: I know, you tried out like or fourteen hosts. And
- 25:47Speaker 1: then when he was on the show, he wasn't in
- 25:49Speaker 1: a rotation and she was like, he's geeky, but I
- 25:51Speaker 1: like him. That take him. It was exactly it I
- 25:53Speaker 1: had after Tony Bruno left my original partner. There were
- 25:57Speaker 1: thirteen people they brought in between Ober in December of
- 26:02Speaker 1: Greeny was a fill and he was doing ESPN News
- 26:04Speaker 1: and they were like, okay, one of the one of
- 26:06Speaker 1: the actual candidates can't make it in, can you fill in?
- 26:08Speaker 1: And I would talk to my wife after the first
- 26:10Speaker 1: segment of every person and she would give me an
- 26:12Speaker 1: update or what she thought. And with Greeny, quote was
- 26:16Speaker 1: sounds kind of geeky, but he's the one, and sure enough,
- 26:20Speaker 1: But like what made him the one? Was it? You
- 26:22Speaker 1: know what? I think It was the fact that he
- 26:23Speaker 1: grew up a fan and a writer. I grew up
- 26:25Speaker 1: a player. You know, we were we were truly the
- 26:28Speaker 1: odd couple, you know, and and so that's how we
- 26:32Speaker 1: related to one another, and it just kind of worked.
- 26:34Speaker 1: The chemistry was just one of those things you just
- 26:37Speaker 1: it was just kind of there and it just kind
- 26:39Speaker 1: of developed even more over the years. So talk a
- 26:41Speaker 1: little bit about huddle up, Let's talk obesity. Yeah, so
- 26:45Speaker 1: huddle up Obesity dot org as the website to go
- 26:48Speaker 1: to and listen. You guys know you've seen teammates, especially
- 26:52Speaker 1: from our side of it. Like when I finished playing,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I was about to ninety, but you know, playing shape
- 26:56Speaker 1: to ninety. Two years later, I'm three, you know, And
- 26:59Speaker 1: I mean an ugly three torenty where I walked out
- 27:01Speaker 1: of the shower one day and said, oh my god,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I need to do something. And so what I did
- 27:07Speaker 1: is it was my wife and my my family who helped.
- 27:10Speaker 1: So that's the biggest message I have not only for
- 27:12Speaker 1: former ballplayers who go the wrong way, but everybody in
- 27:15Speaker 1: general out there who are living that life. Because a
- 27:18Speaker 1: lot of people want to just hide it and they're
- 27:21Speaker 1: embarrassed by it, so they won't seek help, and especially men,
- 27:24Speaker 1: they won't do a yearly chance. Looks like we have
- 27:26Speaker 1: a physical every year. Guys won't go see doctors because
- 27:30Speaker 1: we lived the life of the doctor asking you okay,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I'm fine, I'm playing. You know. Now, a lot of
- 27:35Speaker 1: guys feel well, there's nothing wrong with me at the dime,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I don't go to the doctor, and they don't tell
- 27:38Speaker 1: me there's something wrong exactly right. My point is involve everybody.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You know what. It's something you have to deal with.
- 27:45Speaker 1: It's not just go on one diet. It's a lifestyle
- 27:48Speaker 1: change that people need to do. But you need to
- 27:50Speaker 1: do with other people. We lived in itinerary life. When
- 27:53Speaker 1: to be somewhere, what to wear, what to eat? Now,
- 27:55Speaker 1: all of a sudden, you gotta make your own decisions
- 27:57Speaker 1: when you're done playing, and a lot of times they
- 27:59Speaker 1: can lead to add decisions and unhealthy decisions, and you
- 28:02Speaker 1: gotta be able to pull it back. You need a
- 28:03Speaker 1: support group to do right now. As a former football player,
- 28:05Speaker 1: we're all used to getting graded here, how would your
- 28:08Speaker 1: wife grade you and your whole journey through this now,
- 28:14Speaker 1: it obviously started out as an f when I went
- 28:17Speaker 1: the wrong way, but God love her, I mean she
- 28:20Speaker 1: got me into the two nineties and into the two sixties.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I was also diagnosed with type two diabetes when I
- 28:25Speaker 1: was in the nineties, when I was about forty two,
- 28:28Speaker 1: and when I was in the two nineties, my dad
- 28:30Speaker 1: had it as well. So now I had to deal
- 28:32Speaker 1: with that and make sure I lost weight because of
- 28:34Speaker 1: That's another thing will be so you can bring on
- 28:35Speaker 1: other health issues as well. I'm now the way I
- 28:39Speaker 1: was my senior year in high school, So I mean,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I feel great, so I think she'd give me. Listen,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I'm never gonna give myself an a because I was
- 28:46Speaker 1: known for eating a lot of doughnuts and cookies when
- 28:48Speaker 1: I was doing radio and TV. I still do, just
- 28:52Speaker 1: not as often, right. And also I find also I think,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you know, people say, go, look, you look pretty good. Now.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I said, well, I think I'm still worth more to
- 29:00Speaker 1: my wife alive, so you know she's feeding me. Well
- 29:02Speaker 1: that's the whole deal. I'm to man's bet. I didn't
- 29:07Speaker 1: know that. I didn't know she picked your partners. She did.
- 29:09Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. Oh yeah, yeah, like I said, that
- 29:12Speaker 1: was her exact quote. Sounds kind of geeky, but he's
- 29:15Speaker 1: the one and journey sev eighteen years later worked out. Okay.
- 29:19Speaker 1: So one of the questions we always asked some of
- 29:21Speaker 1: the guests that we have on the show, your Rushmore,
- 29:25Speaker 1: Mount Rushmore, your personal Mount Rushmore, Who would you have
- 29:29Speaker 1: for people that influenced your life that hadn't be didn't
- 29:32Speaker 1: have to be fully sports right? So I was because
- 29:35Speaker 1: not everybody knows. I was never one of those that
- 29:38Speaker 1: had a sports idol. My father was always my hero, always,
- 29:43Speaker 1: so my dad would be on on there. And then
- 29:45Speaker 1: in all honesty, two other guys from my high school.
- 29:48Speaker 1: I mean, those are really such formative years. The head
- 29:51Speaker 1: coach there, God rest his soul, Bill got Broad was
- 29:53Speaker 1: my coach in Cleveland, Ohio. St. Joe's High just laid
- 29:56Speaker 1: a great foundation. And another coach who was a football
- 29:59Speaker 1: coach but also my wrestling coach. Me and my brother
- 30:01Speaker 1: Bob wrestled in college and at Notre Dame. John Story
- 30:05Speaker 1: was his name, was an incredible, incredible developer of the
- 30:11Speaker 1: whole person. And I and people always ask you and
- 30:14Speaker 1: I go out and do talks, who's your idols or whatever?
- 30:16Speaker 1: And I mentioned these guys. They don't know who they are,
- 30:18Speaker 1: but these are the ones that influenced me. So those
- 30:21Speaker 1: are the three. And I would I wouldn't imagine I
- 30:23Speaker 1: have to put my mom up there. If it's not
- 30:25Speaker 1: my mom, it's my wife, because my wife is truly
- 30:28Speaker 1: the backbone of our family without questions. They so, yeah,
- 30:32Speaker 1: it's not really anybody else crazy outside of kind of
- 30:36Speaker 1: who helped mold me, you know, as as a young kid. Yeah, Mike,
- 30:40Speaker 1: that's a great list man. So well, thanks for coming
- 30:43Speaker 1: on podcast. We appreciate you on appreciat how you got
- 30:50Speaker 1: you guys digging this this world. It's really fun. Me
- 30:53Speaker 1: and Peanut get to talk a lot more. He usually
- 30:56Speaker 1: just cracks jokes on me. Let him do to heat more.
- 30:59Speaker 1: He's I'll call him my my my darker Barbara Walters.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So I'm trying to you know, I'm more like laid
- 31:06Speaker 1: back chill. But I'll let I'll let him take the
- 31:08Speaker 1: whole thing. But I'm just I'm more laid back chill.
- 31:11Speaker 1: It's kind of fun not doing sports all the time.
- 31:14Speaker 1: I enjoy that talk about you know who in your
- 31:16Speaker 1: life knows how to rotate time because people think you
- 31:18Speaker 1: just know sports, and it's nice to get to know
- 31:21Speaker 1: the other side of you, the person outside. Yes, we
- 31:26Speaker 1: are not just robotic athletes. Don't put us in a box.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Well we
- 31:43Speaker 1: are done. It's a rap. First day in the books
- 31:46Speaker 1: went It went pretty good? Would you say? I think
- 31:48Speaker 1: it went excellent? Honestly, Um, I want to thank Dion
- 31:51Speaker 1: Sanders coach Prime. I mean, he's the living legend that
- 31:54Speaker 1: we all got to see and he was custom fit today,
- 31:57Speaker 1: clean as always. Blue jean was a blue jean. It
- 32:00Speaker 1: was definitely blue Jen okay, custom blue, no doubt. Mike
- 32:03Speaker 1: Golick for joining us as well. Well. Spoken, amazing man.
- 32:06Speaker 1: He might be one of the original goats from the transition,
- 32:10Speaker 1: you know, his second career, his post that what he's
