- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:12I agree with you. You haven't.
- 0:15You haven't done anything wrong to to deserve this burden.
- 0:20Welcome to Watch Your Least Favorite Scary Movie, The
- 0:22podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and the
- 0:25absurd and all of our. Favorites and least favorites
- 0:27Scary movies because we believe every horror movie rightfully
- 0:29has its fan base. Even if we don't always.
- 0:31Get it? My name is Travis.
- 0:32My name is Jesse. And welcome back, everybody.
- 0:35We are continuing on with our Pride Month on this show.
- 0:38Yeah, happy pride, everybody. We are going to be talking about
- 0:43Knock at the Cabin today. This is going to be our very
- 0:47first time covering an M Night Shyamalan movie.
- 0:49So we're we're going into brand new territory here today,
- 0:54everybody. Indeed we are.
- 0:55Yeah, that was a really dark quote that you pulled.
- 0:58OK, well there are really dark themes in this movie, so I don't
- 1:02know what you want me to do I. Thought they you would maybe
- 1:04like find a nice quote like Leonard says some nice things to
- 1:08win. I I.
- 1:10Think that's the extent of the nice, like the pleasantries, but
- 1:13yeah. I, you know, I went with what I
- 1:16went with. You could have just said you
- 1:18like grasshoppers. I'm really good at catching
- 1:21grasshoppers. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:22Yeah. All right.
- 1:24So yeah, we're talking about knock at the Gavin.
- 1:26But before we get into our discussion, Jesse, do you have
- 1:29anything you'd like to announce? Just a reminder that all of our
- 1:32Patreon earnings this month will be donated towards The Trevor
- 1:36Project. This is a service that helps
- 1:38LGBTQ youth in crisis. Yes, they need all of the
- 1:42funding they can get. And so if you want to, you know,
- 1:47make a donation in the name of pride while also getting some
- 1:53cool, like information like cool.
- 1:55Bonus content. Bonus content.
- 1:57Thank you. Sorry, there's a weed whacker
- 1:58going outside. I was.
- 1:59That distracted me too. Yeah, focus that out there.
- 2:02It's like, is somebody dragging something on the pavement or is
- 2:04that somebody actually doing work out there?
- 2:05It's like, it's like the weed whacker went through my brain.
- 2:10But yeah. So if you want to have access to
- 2:13all that bonus content and also make a donation to a service
- 2:16that is fantastic for LGBTQ use, you can find the link at the
- 2:20very bottom of our show notes. Yeah.
- 2:21And thanks everybody that is actually donating right now or a
- 2:25patron because your money is going to a great 'cause we
- 2:28really appreciate you guys doing that.
- 2:29Absolutely. All right, I have our poll
- 2:32results. OK, so we talked about Repo the
- 2:36Genetic Opera last week and we just wanted to check and see how
- 2:41you guys feel about who should be running the company after
- 2:45Roddy passes. So we had Amber, Luigi and
- 2:51Poppy. So we'll kick it on over to
- 2:54Instagram first, who has 78% Amber as the leader and 22% want
- 2:59Luigi, so Paris Hilton or Bill Mosley.
- 3:03OK, it's sad that I could actually see this be like
- 3:06presidential candidates and like like a reality situation here.
- 3:12Over on Twitter, though, we have 11% Pavi, 67% Amber and 22%
- 3:19again for Luigi. So Amber wins.
- 3:22Amber wins. Yeah, and some of you guys
- 3:24actually like gave us reasoning for why you chose who you did.
- 3:27Some of you guys were very funny.
- 3:28Some of you guys were really thought out.
- 3:29What's your response? But yeah.
- 3:32Shout out to my favorite response to them, which was from
- 3:35Tyler who said that she would bring a new face to the company.
- 3:39I I like that. Mad at a?
- 3:41Punch. No, He he said.
- 3:42If there's ever somebody that needs to face off, well, yeah.
- 3:47Whatever. It's the same.
- 3:48I like your thing too, though. I like that we have Amber who
- 3:52actually is, you know, Amber. So she's like, I have no
- 3:56context, but I got I go with my Amber.
- 3:58OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:59Also a fair reasoning. I got to go with her, too.
- 4:01I mean, it's Paris Hilton. I think out of all of the three
- 4:04of them there, she's probably the most qualified.
- 4:07I think she's probably the most motivated.
- 4:10Most motivated? Going.
- 4:12Yeah, I guess Poppy's like a dark horse, like he could be a
- 4:17potential great leader, but he's just too distracted with those
- 4:20faces. OK, whatever.
- 4:22That's the poll results, so let's talk about Knock at the
- 4:25Cabin. OK.
- 4:26All right. What if my opening had just
- 4:28been? I would generally like that
- 4:31that. Could be something I just
- 4:33thought about. It now do it seven times it's 7
- 4:35knocks, but we're not going to do that OK knockout the cabin
- 4:40release February 3rd 2023. We watched it on Peacock because
- 4:46that is currently the only place you can rinse or you can stream
- 4:49it at if you have a streaming service.
- 4:51But you can rinse it on Apple, Google, YouTube or Fandango at
- 4:56home. Formally Voodoo written by Paul
- 5:01Tremblay which the book that this is based.
- 5:04On is. From thank you.
- 5:06No, the cabinet at the end of the woods.
- 5:07No, no, at the end of the world. You're right.
- 5:10I think I got I think my brain finished the rest of that for
- 5:13me. It's like you got this, Travis.
- 5:15Don't worry. You know the end.
- 5:16You know how this? Is I'm just going to check out
- 5:19now, yeah. No shit.
- 5:21I do that a lot. Like, come on man, you got this.
- 5:23This is just cruise control, baby.
- 5:25Yeah, I I live with you. I've seen your brain cruise
- 5:28control. Funny.
- 5:29Yeah, it's not very good. All right, so we have the
- 5:32screenplay adapted by M Night Shyamalan himself, Steve Desmond
- 5:37and Michael Sherman. OK.
- 5:39Directed by M Night Shyamalan Music by Hardy Stefanos Stefan
- 5:46Stefan's It's Stefan Stouter Stefan Stouter Stefan Stouter
- 5:57Special effects Makeup Patchward Patchward Got I'm Doing It
- 6:01Again. Patrick Edward White and Dane
- 6:04Wilson, with Chirac Agrostra doing the CG supervision.
- 6:10OK, all right, Because there's a lot of super.
- 6:13There's a lot of CG in this. Yeah.
- 6:15It's less effect savvy and more like, here's some visual shit
- 6:19that's going on. Well, I mean, like, practical
- 6:22effects, that is. Yeah.
- 6:23All right. Starring Jonathan Groff as Eric,
- 6:26Ben Aldridge's Andrew, Kristen Qui as When Dave Bautista as
- 6:31Leonard, Nikki Amaka Byrd as Sabrina, Rupert Grint as Redmond
- 6:37and Abby Quinn as Adrian. OK.
- 6:39Time for our favorite game on the show, Budget or But Dad,
- 6:45what do you think? I'm gonna say that it's Budget
- 6:50because it's Shyamalan and it's Groff and it's Bautista.
- 6:56I don't know Groff. Who's Groff?
- 6:57Like what was Gruff been in? I don't know, but I recognize
- 7:00the name. You do OK.
- 7:01I I didn't see. I I thought Andrew looked like a
- 7:04bigger person. I thought Andrew was the guy
- 7:10from that Shutter movie. Scare me where?
- 7:12They're in the cabin. Yeah, he looks a little bit like
- 7:15him now. Oh, he's Kristoff and Frozen.
- 7:19That's how I. Recognize, Yeah, OK.
- 7:23All right, so you're correct, this is $20 million for the
- 7:27budget, so double our standard for actual being budget opening
- 7:31weekend they hit $14 million worldwide gross 54.7 million.
- 7:37All right, that's not bad. It didn't, It didn't make what
- 7:41it needs to be profitable, but maybe they like got money from
- 7:45streaming in home media. So maybe.
- 7:47IMDb 6.1 out of 10. OK.
- 7:50And I will say home media is not dead.
- 7:52There's plenty of like you see all these places like still
- 7:56buying. You see sales figures, like a
- 7:59lot of them are being bought. So like it's not like a dead
- 8:02thing. So I mean people are still
- 8:04making money. It's just nowhere near what it
- 8:06used to be back in like the video store days.
- 8:09All right, so I have a theme for three movies I released in 2023.
- 8:14I decided to make a poem with the titles of the movies that is
- 8:20very much related to this movie. It's almost like a haiku, but
- 8:25it's not because it's it doesn't meet the syllable requirements.
- 8:28But just imagine that this is a mini haiku.
- 8:31OK? Do you want me to do all three
- 8:33of them at once? And then we'll.
- 8:34No, no. No, we'll do the slow.
- 8:36Reveal. Yeah, and then and then at the
- 8:38end read the whole poem. So movie #1 unwelcome.
- 8:43OK. Released March 14th, 2023 with
- 8:46the $392,000 budget. I thought you were going to
- 8:50stay. No.
- 8:51Gross. That was the gross.
- 8:53Sorry, I I wrote it down in the budget here, but I had to like
- 8:55do the little arrow over like, hey, you meant to write it right
- 8:57there, Travis. OK.
- 8:59So no budget listed, but the gross was 392,000.
- 9:02Is your brain gonna come back at any point?
- 9:05I think I might have. Take it off the cruise control.
- 9:08I think I might have just fixed it.
- 9:09It's fine. I did this like first thing in
- 9:10the morning today. OK, so like whatever.
- 9:13IMDb 5.3 out of 10. OK, I've not heard of this.
- 9:18Maybe at? All.
- 9:18I haven't either. It seemed like it was
- 9:21interesting enough. It's a well, actually, I don't
- 9:24think that you would like it. And now that I'm remembering it,
- 9:27I think I kind of vaguely remember hearing about it.
- 9:30But it's about like this family moving to a remote location and
- 9:33they are being haunted by, I think, gnomes.
- 9:38Oh no. Something like that.
- 9:40They're like goblins. Or something.
- 9:42But yeah, it it doesn't seem to me like a Jesse type of movie.
- 9:48So unwelcome. All right, movie #2.
- 9:51Unwelcome. The sacrifice game.
- 9:54OK. Release date December 8th, 2023.
- 9:58No budget listed. Worldwide gross 301 thousand.
- 10:02IMDb 5.5. I haven't seen that, but we we
- 10:09should probably watch that because it seems very much like
- 10:11a Jesse movie and it's a shot. Movie that makes up for
- 10:13suggesting a no movie to me. I wasn't suggesting.
- 10:16Yeah, I was just like, I'm just talking about it.
- 10:20I don't even know if it's gnomes.
- 10:21It could have been goblins. I don't know, but I pictured
- 10:23gnomes whenever I read the description, so OK, the final
- 10:28one, the final movie is You're Killing Me.
- 10:32Wow. Released.
- 10:36Unwelcome. Hold on.
- 10:38Yeah, Sorry. Go ahead.
- 10:39Yeah. It's unwelcome.
- 10:41The sacrifice game. You're killing me.
- 10:46So they're unwelcome now they're playing the sacrifice game and
- 10:49then at the end when he's dying, he's actually saying you're
- 10:51killing me. Oh my God.
- 10:53I thought it was pretty good. I, I, I do appreciate it you put
- 10:57in the word for that. OK, you're killing me.
- 10:59Or at least April 7th, 2023. No budgets, no worldwide gross,
- 11:04but the IMDb was 4.9. OK all.
- 11:08Right, all right. That was a fun theme.
- 11:13All right, I'm glad that. Howie Scott, a reaction.
- 11:17OK, tagline. There's two, one on the poster.
- 11:21Save your family or save humanity.
- 11:23Make the choice. I mean, it's not creative, but
- 11:28it does explain what the movie's about.
- 11:32If you don't want to watch the trailer all.
- 11:33Right. Well, let me hit you with the
- 11:34second one. Make the choice.
- 11:37OK, they're. Just like, hey, let's just do a
- 11:39little bit less. Yeah, do less.
- 11:41Yeah, I agree. I feel like.
- 11:43Something that people have been saying to him, Night Shyamalan
- 11:45his entire career. Do less or do more.
- 11:48Some people wanted him to do more sometimes.
- 11:51Like I think do more right after science or not science 6th sense
- 11:57and. Then or.
- 11:58Gradually after that is do less. Maybe.
- 12:01I think people wanted him to do more with the happening.
- 12:03They're like, do do more. Like what the fuck is this?
- 12:06What? No.
- 12:10Yeah, so tagline's not so great here.
- 12:13Well, we've got got some work to do there.
- 12:16Yeah, OK. I do have our fun facts though.
- 12:19So as we have already discussed, this was adapted from Tromboy's
- 12:24novel, which already had a film option that he signed for with
- 12:28us back in 2017. So.
- 12:30OK, so this was a wail in the making.
- 12:32It was, yeah. And they knew that this was
- 12:34going to end up becoming a movie eventually.
- 12:37It was whenever it was already written by Steve Desmond and
- 12:40Michael Sherman, listed as one of the most popular unproduced
- 12:44screenplays in 2019. I could see that like it is a
- 12:48compelling kind of idea. Yeah, I, I agree.
- 12:52I like, I can imagine this grabbing a lot of people because
- 12:55it starts and then you get right to it.
- 12:58Shyamalan actually read it originally, and then he wanted
- 13:01to produce it, but then eventually he went and talked
- 13:07with Universal. He ended up getting A2 Picture
- 13:09Deal. This is funny because these are
- 13:12the two movies that we have. Old and this movie were part of
- 13:15A2 Picture Deal, so I feel like we have to watch Old even more
- 13:19now. So yeah, Old came out in 2021.
- 13:24So he moved on into this, and whenever by the time it came
- 13:26back to that, he's like, you know what?
- 13:27Like I'm really excited about it, I want to direct it and
- 13:29stuff. So he went and did a whole
- 13:32rewrite of the script and that's why he's attached as a
- 13:35screenplay, why he's got a credit there now too.
- 13:39OK, which I wonder which one of them changed the ending?
- 13:42He did. OK.
- 13:43Yes, he, well, we'll go and talk about that.
- 13:46That was going to be one of my things later on.
- 13:48But yeah, I mean, he did change the engine, engine.
- 13:51He changed the ending because he wanted something more certain
- 13:56and he didn't want it to be that dark.
- 14:00But it's a dark subject. It is, yeah.
- 14:05OK, let me go through this stuff.
- 14:07Like the IT changes the whole. I agree.
- 14:10Hold on. Let me go through this a little
- 14:12bit more organically because I I'm like working towards
- 14:14something here. Nothing grand or anything.
- 14:18This is just my flow that I've got.
- 14:21OK, so filming began in Burlington County, New Jersey.
- 14:26That's where this was shot. They shot with lenses from the
- 14:3090s to give it an old school thriller look, which I thought
- 14:33that that was really cool that they did that.
- 14:36I've read a lot of people using older lens to like get that old
- 14:40feeling and really apparently does a really good job of
- 14:43capturing that. I didn't really catch it
- 14:45watching this. It still looked very modern to
- 14:47me, but you know. What?
- 14:48No part of that felt 90s to me. That's fine.
- 14:53This is actually the only M Night Shyamalan film or the only
- 14:58or the 2nd in that Shamwan film to receive an R rating, which I
- 15:05feel like this has to be the softest R rating I've ever seen
- 15:08in a movie. This makes sense.
- 15:10No, the other one was the happening.
- 15:13Oh yeah, that does have like a lot.
- 15:15Of suicides, yeah, it gets, it gets pretty that one a little
- 15:20bit more and this one has like mass death.
- 15:21But you don't get over the marky mark of it all, so.
- 15:25Yeah, nobody can. Yeah, it's a little bit too
- 15:27funky. But like, yeah, this one has
- 15:30like a lot of deaths going on, but it's not like it's, it's
- 15:33just kind of like you see a news broadcast, which we see that
- 15:36shit all the time without like having censors at all.
- 15:40Like, they show that shit on the news no matter what.
- 15:42So it was really weird. OK, so now we're going to the
- 15:47notable differences between the book and the movie.
- 15:49So if you don't want to have the book spoiled for you, go ahead
- 15:53and skip a little bit from here. But so the main thing in the
- 15:59book, the main biggest difference is it's not Eric that
- 16:02dies, it's Wind that dies. And.
- 16:06It happens as a result of a struggle for the gun between
- 16:10them and it accidentally misfires and it kills her.
- 16:13So she doesn't even actually count as a sacrifice.
- 16:16Right. Which is really fucking weird.
- 16:19Like I feel like that should count, but I guess it has to be
- 16:22deliberate. Yeah, it the whole thing is that
- 16:24it's got to be a choice made willingly, which is stupid to
- 16:28begin with because you tie them up to chairs, but whatever.
- 16:32Well, they're trying to convince them.
- 16:34I think it's the thing like they're like they're ultimately
- 16:37making them do it, but like they have to talk them down to that
- 16:40point. And also in that like they don't
- 16:44make a choice of who does it. So they decide that they're
- 16:48going to be together forever and they're going to face the world
- 16:52and see whatever happens. So they don't know if that
- 16:55sacrifice ends up counting or if that well, they.
- 16:59Also said that they don't want to appease whatever kind of a
- 17:02being would cause them to destroy their family.
- 17:06Yes, so just. Kind of the whole whole big
- 17:10theme because there's like a lot of there's a lot of like talks
- 17:16of religion and spirituality in this movie.
- 17:19And I think it's something that has to kind of go hand in hand
- 17:23when you are talking about a gay couple that has faced incredibly
- 17:27intense persecution. You can't ignore that link
- 17:33there. And I think that's really
- 17:34important to the book. I haven't read the book, but I
- 17:37got curious. I wanted to see how the movie
- 17:39differed. See, yeah, I'm glad that you
- 17:41were on board 'cause I looked this up for myself, 'cause I
- 17:43don't really plan to read it, but I thought maybe you might
- 17:46plan to read it after the fact. You know I so.
- 17:50I I still probably will actually check it out 'cause it sounds
- 17:53interesting anyway. There's one more difference.
- 17:56I guess you didn't know this, but in the book, Winner doesn't
- 18:00kill himself. He's killed by one of the the
- 18:04group members that is fed up with it and doesn't want to
- 18:07continue anymore. So they kill them and they walk
- 18:09off and they just quit. Yeah, I read.
- 18:11I read that. Too.
- 18:12Yeah. So yeah, that's another thing
- 18:14that happens there. That's different.
- 18:15So, yeah, big differences not changing a whole lot of the
- 18:21quarter. It changes a lot about the
- 18:23ending, but you know. Yeah, and it changes like some
- 18:26of the IT changes how like the theme is wrapped up.
- 18:31It feels almost like I don't. It's just a very different take
- 18:37on the story to change all of that.
- 18:46To change the ending, yeah, yeah, it's very much a different
- 18:51a different way to do it. But I don't think it's bad
- 18:55either. I like the ending that we got.
- 18:57It just feels like when you take when you're changing such a big
- 19:03thing from it. I guess that's the difference
- 19:06between like, you know, like making it from the script or
- 19:09like adapting it very much faithfully, like, you know, take
- 19:13that and just you can make whatever change you want to
- 19:16make. It feels like you're making a
- 19:17different point with the story, like instead of, you know, in
- 19:24the book where it's very much like, well, we're not going to
- 19:28sacrifice just because this might be a thing that saves the
- 19:32world. And even if it is, what kind of
- 19:35the benevolent being is forcing this upon us right in the movie,
- 19:41where it's like, no, this is good.
- 19:43It brings peace to all of us. To do this is actually kind of
- 19:47really fucked up if you think about it.
- 19:49It's all really fucked. Up, yeah.
- 19:51But like, yeah, it's, I think it just comes down to like the
- 19:56individual people's philosophy of like what they find more
- 20:00compelling. Yeah.
- 20:01Like, you know, some people hate having that uncertainty in the
- 20:05ending there, and then some people like to have a complete
- 20:07finished story with an like elbow at the end.
- 20:11Then I guess that's like the difference between the two of
- 20:13them there. Like, I don't feel like I'm not,
- 20:15I'm not Shumlin's not the type of dude to like withhold an
- 20:17ending from you. Like that's his thing.
- 20:19He's like, and here's the ending.
- 20:21Like that's his favorite part. Yeah, yeah, that is kind of his
- 20:24thing. Yeah.
- 20:26So yeah. OK, OK, so because this is Pride
- 20:29Month and because we want to talk about issues that matter, I
- 20:35found some statistics that relate to this movie.
- 20:40As always, I will share the links to these in the show notes
- 20:43as well. These are bummer statistics, so
- 20:47buckle up friends. I I think it's important to talk
- 20:53about it because these are things that are featured in the
- 20:55movie. And one is violence perpetrated
- 20:57against LGBTQ people in the United States.
- 21:00Yeah, that's a very big part of this movie.
- 21:03LGBTQ people experience 9 times more hate crime victimizations
- 21:08than non LGBTQ people. So that means that an LGBT
- 21:13person is more likely to is 9 times more likely to experience
- 21:17a hate crime in their lifetime than a non LGBTQ person.
- 21:20Damn, that's a whole that's a big difference.
- 21:22Yeah, yeah, it was like 6.6 out of 1000 versus .6 out of 1000.
- 21:28Shit. Yeah.
- 21:30I mean, I, I, I believe it. Unfortunately it sucks, but
- 21:34yeah. And then I also found some
- 21:37information from finelaw.com that says 22 states allow
- 21:42adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ
- 21:44couples during adoptions and provide no legal recourse for
- 21:48gay parents if they encounter such discrimination.
- 21:51Lambda Legal said that nearly six million Americans have an
- 21:54LGBTQ parent. Same sex couples are four times
- 21:58more likely to have adopted children or stepchildren, and
- 22:01more than one in five LGBTQ plus Americans live in a state that
- 22:05allows child welfare agencies to refuse to place children with
- 22:08them. Even less fun fact, my
- 22:13experience looking up some of these statistics was garbage
- 22:17anti LGBTQ websites that were trying to say the reasons why
- 22:20gay people shouldn't adopt. Those were harder to avoid than
- 22:25I would like to admit. I forgot how much of like a
- 22:28bummer these segments are this month.
- 22:30Yeah. We don't really talk about fun
- 22:32things. But I mean, that's why pride
- 22:34exists, you know, is because shit like this is going on in
- 22:38the world, Like because we have statistics like this to share,
- 22:42that's why we have pride. Oh, I, I'm not saying it's not
- 22:46important to share the information.
- 22:47It's just yeah, yeah, it's unfortunate.
- 22:49It's a fuck of a bummer. Yeah, it really is.
- 22:52But you know what? It's not a fuck of a bummer.
- 22:54Not this movie. To talk about the good, bad,
- 22:57ugly and absurd of a movie. OK, well that's fine.
- 23:00Well we're starting off with the good too, which is is always
- 23:02nice. So you kick it off this time
- 23:05since this was my pick. OK, so I will say good for me is
- 23:09that this movie showed me that I shouldn't judge a book by it's
- 23:13Shyamalan. I here's The thing is that the
- 23:18premise, like it's one of those that the trailer tells you what
- 23:25the movie is like. That is the thing, you know what
- 23:28I mean? What do you mean?
- 23:30That I. Mean, shouldn't that be what
- 23:32trailers are supposed to do? Is tell you what the movie is
- 23:34that way you wanna watch it. But it's telling you what the
- 23:38plot of the movie is, is that they have to decide to pick to
- 23:42avoid the end of the There's nothing much more beyond that.
- 23:44To be fair, there's nothing much more to the movie.
- 23:47Like we get 5 minutes into the movie saying.
- 23:50I'm just saying like, I mean, it's not the fault of the
- 23:52trailer, that's just the movie. I know, but that's what I'm
- 23:56trying. I'm let me make my point man.
- 23:58OK, you you sound like you were criticizing the trailer.
- 24:01I I was just wanting to make sure.
- 24:02OK. No, I was just saying, like, I
- 24:05see the trailer, I'm not very compelled by it because I'm
- 24:08like, oh man, it's M Night Shyamalan.
- 24:10He's going to force some dumb twist in there.
- 24:12And I just, I had no desire to see this.
- 24:16And I actually really liked seeing how the story played out,
- 24:19seeing the history behind Eric and Andrew's relationship and
- 24:23their adoption of when and the things that they've gone
- 24:25together individually and as a couple.
- 24:28Very real kind of experiences that unfortunately gay men, gay
- 24:32men do have to face. And I thought that it was a
- 24:35really touching story of their family and how much they love
- 24:38each other. When is just a little delight.
- 24:41And Bautista, for all of his Evan Kemper realness when he
- 24:44appears on screen, is just like, I want him as a second grade
- 24:48teacher, you know what I mean? Like.
- 24:50He's a huge person to be a like a grade teacher.
- 24:54Like I feel like he's spending more time in the gym than he is
- 24:56like with the kids. But yeah, he, he was awesome.
- 24:59I I loved him in this. Yeah, so I, I all of the
- 25:03performance were incredibly heartfelt.
- 25:08And I actually like, this was a much more touching story than I
- 25:11really expected it to be. I thought it was just gonna be
- 25:14like, blam, blam, here's the end of the world.
- 25:17And it was more than that. And I very much enjoyed seeing,
- 25:22like, seeing all of the interactions and the
- 25:25performances from these, from this cast.
- 25:28Mm hmm. Also, it was really weird
- 25:30hearing Rupert Grant put on a Boston accent.
- 25:34Yeah, he's terrible at it. Yeah.
- 25:36I heard his English accent peek through a couple of times.
- 25:39Listen, he tried real hard. Did he?
- 25:43I think he did. He's like, I'm Ron Weasley.
- 25:46I got, you know, whatever. I'll walk into this movie.
- 25:48I'll do my own shit. Yeah.
- 25:50Like, he's like, my name is Redmond.
- 25:53OK, wardrobe department. Give me some red.
- 25:55You're like, don't you think that's a little bit too on the
- 25:56nose, Rupert? He's like he's.
- 25:58Like my hair? I agree with you, I thought
- 26:01Batista was amazing in this movie.
- 26:02He's probably the person that stole the show for me.
- 26:05I know a lot of people have been giving him a lot of credit for
- 26:08his acting traps here lately, but I feel like he is far
- 26:13excite. He's far exceeding all the
- 26:15expectations people have for WWE wrestler turned actor because
- 26:20you know, you got The Rock and you got John Cena, who are all
- 26:22like good in their own things. John Cena is like a, he's like
- 26:25in the middle. I think rocks at the bottom
- 26:27because he only plays one type and he's really soft about what
- 26:30he does. And then you get Batista, who
- 26:32isn't afraid to be like, make fun of himself or be like this
- 26:36giant like gentle dude. Like he actually puts forth the
- 26:39effort to be a good actor. And by all accounts, I've read
- 26:42that he's just a wonderful human being.
- 26:44I was reading him or and not Shyamalan talk about him in this
- 26:49movie and like he said that he was taken back by he how he
- 26:54wanted to just start fresh and he wanted to just like warn
- 26:58things like like learning how to do it.
- 27:00He didn't think that he was capable of acting in this role
- 27:04because it was so big for him, But he was like M Night Shama
- 27:09was like, look, man, like I believe you can do this.
- 27:12I know you can do this, like we're going to do this together
- 27:14and then like it, you know, speaks for itself.
- 27:18He saw him. He picked him because he watched
- 27:20the new Blade Runner movie and thought he killed in that, which
- 27:22I've not seen that. So I can't really talk about
- 27:24that. It does a really good job of
- 27:26making you care about all three of the people there.
- 27:29Like you said, the flashbacks were a great way to humanize the
- 27:32characters because you know, you don't really get who they are or
- 27:36what they are. You just know that they're like
- 27:38a couple and they have their kid there with them in the cabin.
- 27:41And it really makes you sympathetic towards them because
- 27:46when you see all the shit that they've had to endure, like you
- 27:49feel really bad. And it, it did a really good job
- 27:54of showing two different types of people, like the person that
- 28:01experiences shit in the world. And it creates this hate that
- 28:05like they can't trust the world anymore.
- 28:08And because of that, they are all like, they just don't care
- 28:12for it. The world can go fuck itself.
- 28:14Everybody can die. It doesn't matter.
- 28:15And then you have this other person who is he's, he's like
- 28:21more of like a caring type person and he doesn't like let
- 28:23that stuff shape how he sees other people because he still
- 28:27tries to see the good. I'm sorry, I'm finishing my
- 28:29thing. Go ahead.
- 28:30No, that's fine. I just wanted to when you're
- 28:34done. That's why I had my hand up.
- 28:36I, I think it's a little bit more complex with Eric than that
- 28:39even. Or Andrew.
- 28:41Which one's the angry one? Andrew?
- 28:42Andrew, I, I think he's angry and I think he's got a lot of
- 28:46reason to be angry. So does Eric.
- 28:48They both have reason to be angry.
- 28:50And like you said, they have two different reactions to it, where
- 28:53Andrew really leans into that, whereas Eric, you know, opts for
- 28:57a softer spot. But what I find fascinating
- 29:00about Andrew's character, Eric's character.
- 29:03Fuck, I can't. Andrew's the angry one.
- 29:05Andrew's the angry one. OK, thank you.
- 29:08Eric just feels like an angry name to me.
- 29:11Andrew angry. OK, Andrew's, he's a human
- 29:16rights attorney, you know what I mean?
- 29:18Like he's still doing work for people, he hasn't completely
- 29:22written off all of humanity and said fuck everyone.
- 29:25He literally. Says that in this.
- 29:26Movie is much more cynical. Yeah, You know, he literally
- 29:30says like, they're all terrible. Fuck them.
- 29:32It doesn't like they don't deserve this.
- 29:34Like he literally says that in the movie at least, like, which,
- 29:38you know, like, I get it. Like, yeah, he's, he's had to go
- 29:41through a lot of shit. And when you do that, it's hard
- 29:43to maintain faith in humanity at that point because humanity's
- 29:46been so cruel to you. It's hard to like, I get it.
- 29:50Cruel to him and cruel to the people that he represents.
- 29:53But I think like, there's a difference between like how you
- 29:56bluff and how you bark versus like how you actually, like,
- 30:01what kind of walk you're actually walking, you know?
- 30:04And as angry as he is and as ready as he is at a moment's
- 30:08notice to have to fight for himself and his family, I do
- 30:12think because he, he is still dedicating himself to like
- 30:17mentally and emotionally draining work for the benefit of
- 30:21other people. I I just think he's a little bit
- 30:23more complex, that's all. OK, I'm just observing what, you
- 30:28know, what I saw. Like, you know, I'm just trying
- 30:30to take it for like what I saw. And you know, I'm not saying
- 30:34that he's not a complex character and that he's like
- 30:36straight up like hates everybody except for Eric and when, but
- 30:41you know, like it's just overall, generally speaking has
- 30:46created this resentment for the world.
- 30:49I think that that's a fair statement that he's that he has
- 30:52and it's not it. It's not like it doesn't make
- 30:59sense. Like it makes sense for him.
- 31:01OK, I'm just trying to say it's nice seeing the like the
- 31:04comparison between the two. You get like two different
- 31:06people. Like he is very much like a fuck
- 31:08it. Who cares?
- 31:09Who cares what who cares about them?
- 31:10The other one's like, look, man, this is a really important
- 31:13decision. We need to actually think about
- 31:15this and not just like, like we got to take the things that are
- 31:19in front of us and form our own opinion, like, you know, not be
- 31:24not be blinded by our past experiences.
- 31:27And the other thing is, I thought that they did a really
- 31:30good job of giving reasons to like actually believe them and
- 31:34also doubt them at the same time.
- 31:37I disagree, I don't think they gave them any good reasons to.
- 31:40Boy, this is just falling apart. I I wouldn't have been convinced
- 31:45by any of them. Well, OK, like I will.
- 31:49I read other discussions and other people felt the same way.
- 31:51I, I thought like they like, like if you actually see the
- 31:54things that are going on and you pay attention, like, I guess I'm
- 31:57an Eric like, like I, I, I don't try like, I like how he actually
- 32:03tried to like understand from their perspective why they are
- 32:06doing this. Rather try and understand
- 32:09something from somebody's perspective without.
- 32:11OK, let's go on to bed. I don't really have like a ton
- 32:14of bad about this, honestly. I I guess mostly just like how
- 32:21the theme changed between the book and the movie.
- 32:24OK, that that difference in the story.
- 32:26I think honestly in some ways that this is a darker ending and
- 32:32I think it leaves just as much up in the air and as a question
- 32:38personally. But OK, I guess that's partly
- 32:42because I I wasn't convinced by the the horsemen, so to speak.
- 32:48You didn't think it was real? No, Even after the end of the
- 32:50movie. No, I think.
- 32:52You thought all that shit just happened, that like, happened.
- 32:55Yeah, they're coincidences all the time.
- 32:58I. How?
- 32:59But how does that happen? Like immediately after they say
- 33:04that they're unleashing the horsemen and like all of a
- 33:06sudden, like actual planes are falling from the sky.
- 33:09I. I think coincidences happened.
- 33:12I don't think that it was some big.
- 33:15I really do think that we're just like Eric.
- 33:17And Andrew here. Apparently because like I, I
- 33:19bought into it, like by the end of it, I would just think that.
- 33:22And I, I mean, I, I believe he very much says so like that.
- 33:26That's like, it was all true. Like the twist is that there's
- 33:31no twist. It's like legitimately the end
- 33:33of the world. They are there to represent the
- 33:36four Horsemen of the apocalypse. I was reading it.
- 33:41Leonard is the one that represents leadership.
- 33:48Rupert's Redmond is supposed to be anger.
- 33:52Mallet Redmond is mallet, Adrian is nurturing, Sabrina is
- 33:56healing, and Leonard is guidance.
- 33:58They they literally say it in the movie.
- 33:59Well, I know, but like, I'm just trying to, I'm not saying that I
- 34:03read that like I've got secret information, but I'm just trying
- 34:06to say like, I believe it, OK. And I I don't know, all right.
- 34:12My, my bads are. I thought that Rupert did a bad
- 34:16job with his accent, like I said, and I thought that for
- 34:19this to be an R rated movie, they did a lot of off screen
- 34:23deaths. Maybe we don't really get to see
- 34:25any of the deaths play out, which it's kind of, you know,
- 34:28like, doesn't have to be like that.
- 34:30But like, man, that when I saw like those beat downs that they
- 34:33were giving them, they were pretty gruesome.
- 34:35So it would have been kind of cool to see some of that stuff
- 34:37when I'm watching a horror movie.
- 34:39Yeah. All right.
- 34:41Ugly. You know, the whole like
- 34:47homophobia of it all. Yeah.
- 34:51I mean, I feel like it's very, it's very upfront with it.
- 34:55Like, I mean, that's like a big one.
- 34:57I also think it's like a horrible thing.
- 34:59They have to like, choose to like who from your family or
- 35:05like whatever you care most about.
- 35:08Like choose and make that sacrifice for the whole world.
- 35:11Like, it's such a like a such a fucked up thing.
- 35:14Yeah. All right.
- 35:16I'm absurd. Show us what you're packing,
- 35:19Daddy Andrew. You can't.
- 35:21Put in a line like that. Come on.
- 35:24I yeah, I like that. That was really funny.
- 35:29Yeah. That I, I, I wonder if that was
- 35:33like a like a happy coincidence or if they actually wrote that
- 35:37line out to mean it like that. You can't.
- 35:42You can't write that line and not know what the double
- 35:46entendre is. You can't.
- 35:48Some people are oblivious I guess.
- 35:49I don't know, like it could happen.
- 35:51I feel like they would have leaned into it in the movie
- 35:53maybe. The fact that it comes from
- 35:56Redmond on top of that. That's true.
- 36:01Yeah. Oh, yeah, he does say that.
- 36:02Yeah. I feel like that makes makes a
- 36:04little bit more sense with it being from him.
- 36:08All right. My absurds whenever they're in
- 36:11the adoption place to pick up when in the flashback, there's a
- 36:15mural of Jesus playing soccer with kids, which I thought was
- 36:18pretty funny. And also Andrew doing the pocket
- 36:22sand at one point. Like he straight up Dell
- 36:25gribbles that. Is how I wrote it in my notes.
- 36:28Yeah, it is what it is. He pocket sands here.
- 36:32All right, so let's rate it. OK, I think I'm going to give it
- 36:39an 8. OK, I really liked it.
- 36:43I had a lot more fun with this than I was really expecting to.
- 36:47I'd give it. I'd probably give it an 8 also.
- 36:50OK. Yeah, starting average of eight.
- 36:52OK. We ready.
- 36:54Let's do it. So we start off with the opening
- 36:59credits are over, some doodles on top of medical papers and a
- 37:03newspaper and some schoolwork. And what I'm assuming is like,
- 37:13just like random like things like bills and stuff, which end
- 37:19up being the Four Horsemans, you know, representation of their
- 37:24jobs and whatnot and the visions they're seeing or.
- 37:26Is that what that is? Yeah, I missed that.
- 37:28Yeah, well, I wrote it down because I was like, this feels
- 37:31like it's important that these scribbles are happening on these
- 37:33things. And after seeing who after they
- 37:37like introduce themselves, I was like, Oh yeah, that makes sense
- 37:40then. Yeah, I didn't catch.
- 37:42I just, I wasn't really expecting it to be like a Four
- 37:44Horsemen type deal with them. OK, what?
- 37:48I didn't. Excite was this little girl to
- 37:50ask the grasshoppers for informed consent to be a part of
- 37:54her study, that was. Nice.
- 37:57Yeah, I liked her talking to the Grasshopper and she named it
- 38:00Caroline, like her friend from school.
- 38:01But she said don't fart like Caroline because nobody likes
- 38:04that. And then Bautista comes up and
- 38:09he looks like somebody who is ready to murder a small child
- 38:14and bury her in the woods. Well, it's hard to not look like
- 38:18that when you're him. Yeah, when you're 6 1/2 feet
- 38:21tall and 300 lbs of muscle. But he's And then you are styled
- 38:25to wear Evan Kemper glasses. Yeah, he's like a legit kind
- 38:31though, like, you know, like he, he's a nice guy.
- 38:33He, like, walks up to her and asks her.
- 38:36Well, he introduces himself. He does the whole thing with
- 38:38kids, like, oh, all right, let's not be strangers.
- 38:40My name is Leonard. And then he helps her catch a
- 38:43bug. Apparently she likes to just
- 38:44really catch grasshoppers. Yeah, And you can tell that he's
- 38:48worked with kids because he knows, like, a good way to talk
- 38:50to her. And he gets her talking.
- 38:52And, you know, she mentions like, she says something about
- 38:56Daddy Eric. And he goes, oh, you call your
- 38:58dad by his first name? And she was like, well, I have
- 39:00two dads. So that's how, you know, we tell
- 39:03all the party we've got Daddy Eric and Daddy Andrew.
- 39:06And he was like, Oh well, how do you feel about that?
- 39:09She goes, I don't know, some kids have one dad, I have two.
- 39:11The only thing I really don't like is this busted ass guidance
- 39:15counselor at school who says it's really, really great in a
- 39:17way that makes me think that she doesn't actually think it's
- 39:19really great. Kids can clock that shit y'all.
- 39:22Yeah, I also, I was thinking about that.
- 39:24I wonder if like it was people like being like too enthusiastic
- 39:29about it because like, I feel like if you don't treat it like
- 39:31it's a normal thing, then it feels like it's not a normal
- 39:34thing. But like, you know, like if it's
- 39:37like a, if that's the situation, just react normally.
- 39:39Yeah, yeah, she's going to be 8 in two days and she wants to be
- 39:44a vet when she grows up, so that's why she's studying the
- 39:46grasshoppers, which I think is just adorable.
- 39:50He offers her a flower, but she doesn't want to take it.
- 39:53So he's like, well, let's play a game, we'll pull a pedal off and
- 39:56we'll each answer a question. So she asks why he's there.
- 40:02And I mean, they have a couple of like more basic questions.
- 40:06He kind of kills the vibe by asking about her scar.
- 40:12Yeah. 'Cause she was born with a cleft
- 40:14flip. He at least recognizes and
- 40:17apologizes like that was too personal even for this game
- 40:21'cause they're playing a game where he handed her the flower.
- 40:23So they pick a pedal, and every time they pick a pedal they have
- 40:26to tell I ask a question about the person.
- 40:28Yeah, and that was, that was way too intense for a second
- 40:31question. So she's like, well, why are you
- 40:34here? And he goes, well, you can't
- 40:37see, but I have injuries on the inside because I'm heartbroken
- 40:42because of what I have to do. And then she sees like these
- 40:46other strangers locking up and she's like, oh, shit.
- 40:49So she runs to the house and she's like trying to get her
- 40:52dads to come inside. They're on the back porch and
- 40:55they are not taking this seriously at all.
- 40:58I like how she's like, there's people at the door and they want
- 41:00to talk to you and they're OK trying to like.
- 41:02Jehovah's Witnesses. So Eric speaks with Leonard.
- 41:07He goes to the door. Sabrina and Adrian in Redmond
- 41:12are also standing there, all menacingly.
- 41:15Andrew tries to call the police because he starts to get a
- 41:18sketched out vibe from them, but the phone's no longer working
- 41:20and Leonard straight up admits he's like yeah, sorry we had to
- 41:23cut your line. I think it was Adrian that said
- 41:25we cut the phone and we know that there's no cell signal out
- 41:29here because we don't have signal either.
- 41:31This is where Rupert, or not Rupert, I'm sorry, Redmond says.
- 41:35Show us what you're packing, Daddy Andrew.
- 41:38And that's when the four begin to break in to the house.
- 41:42Yeah, so like on the inside, we've got the family is like
- 41:45trying to barricade themselves, like they're trying to block the
- 41:49windows, block the doors, lock everything up, but meanwhile
- 41:54everything's being busted in 'cause this is a very beautiful
- 41:57but impractical against Home Invasion's cabin.
- 42:01Yeah, they also, I guess worth mentioning, they very clearly
- 42:05are carrying weapons, so they noticed those from the.
- 42:08Window made weapons. Yeah, like weapons aren't the
- 42:11clown I'd be jealous of. Yeah, and that's why he wanted
- 42:16to know what he's packing, because he, Andrew Yelsey, has a
- 42:19gun. But he says Eric's like, really
- 42:22you do. He's like, not here, but it's in
- 42:23the trunk of the car, so we know where that is.
- 42:25Chekhov's Gun. Yep.
- 42:27Yeah, actually a gun. The family realizes that they're
- 42:32kind of losing this game, so they're just gonna make a run
- 42:35for it. And when they are running,
- 42:39Sabrina gets in and Eric fights her so that way when And Andrew
- 42:45can run but they end up staying because Eric gets knocked out
- 42:51really bad and Andrew comes in and he starts fucking Redmond.
- 42:55Shoot up, fucking him up. You know that I'm saying Redman
- 43:03and that's not his real name. Is that a name that the
- 43:05character came up with for himself?
- 43:07Like, I have red hair. I am the Redman.
- 43:11I represent anger. I am also the Redman in that
- 43:14way. Do you think he knew which one
- 43:16he was which horseman? I mean, he was the only like,
- 43:19not cool one. Yeah.
- 43:22Do you? Think that that means that he
- 43:24knows. He seemed to understand he's an
- 43:27asshole. Oh, yeah, he does.
- 43:29But it makes sense. He's a malice.
- 43:30He's supposed to be an asshole. Yeah.
- 43:32So we get a flashback to Andrew's parents meeting Eric
- 43:36for the first time, and it is super uncomfortable.
- 43:40They drove 8 hours to come over to the house.
- 43:44They stay for half an hour and they leave.
- 43:47Andrew is really upset about the whole situation, but Eric is
- 43:50trying to calm him down and let him know that it's OK, They
- 43:54still have each other. Yeah.
- 43:56Which is, unfortunately, too real of a reality for far too
- 44:00many gay children. Gay children.
- 44:03Oh, right. No, I thought you were talking
- 44:05about like when here I was like. No, no, no.
- 44:07I'm talking about like, you know, people whatever age.
- 44:11Yeah, coming. Out to their Oh yeah, yeah,
- 44:13sure, yeah. Or even if they've come out,
- 44:15sometimes their parents don't really react until they see them
- 44:20with their same sex partner. Yeah, so Eric comes to and
- 44:25Sabrina is tending to his wounds.
- 44:28They're. Outside the chairs right now.
- 44:29They're tied to chairs. Wen isn't, but presumably she's
- 44:34being coerced into submission. Weirdly, these home invaders are
- 44:39cleaning up the house, which is a bizarre sight to begin with.
- 44:44And Leonard has a Strawberry Shortcake on the TV.
- 44:47And he says he really likes the show 'cause it teaches kids
- 44:49about sharing and not being prejudice.
- 44:53Which she speaks to talk of an actual teacher.
- 44:55I thought that that was pretty cool.
- 44:57Yeah, so they're like, this is not driven by homophobia.
- 45:03We swear we did not know you were gay when we got here.
- 45:06Well, they don't straight up like, admit that like, they're
- 45:09like, Andrew calls him homophobic.
- 45:11Yeah, because he's like claiming that there it's a targeted
- 45:14attack. Yeah.
- 45:17So they decide that they're going to introduce themselves to
- 45:20the group to try and explain why they're there.
- 45:23So Sabrina says that she used her savings to get there from
- 45:26California. She's a nurse, so she came from
- 45:29California to Pennsylvania because she just feels like she
- 45:34really strongly believes this. Leonard's from Chicago.
- 45:37He's a second grade teacher and also a bartender and he also
- 45:41does the after school program. Redmond kind of starts to mock
- 45:46the whole thing. Yeah.
- 45:49He he does like that I like long walks on the beach and you know,
- 45:52whatever. And then he gets like he starts
- 45:55just telling him how stupid it is that they have to introduce
- 45:58like themselves because they know what they have to do.
- 46:01You're super fucked up anyways. And then Adrian, who has like
- 46:05all of this. He does say that he's from
- 46:08Massachusetts. He works for the gas company.
- 46:10He used to be beat by his father's.
- 46:12That little ass kicking that he got from Andrew wasn't super
- 46:16fun. But also he is a convicted felon
- 46:19and. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 46:21I forgot about that. He's got a sketchy pass.
- 46:23Yeah, Adrian's from DC. She's a line cook.
- 46:27She has two cats named Roof and RAF, but I like that as names
- 46:32for cats. Yeah, that's a good fitting.
- 46:35So they are there to prevent the apocalypse.
- 46:37The family must willingly choose to sacrifice one, and they must
- 46:43also be the ones to do the killing or the world will end.
- 46:48But those three, the three family members will live and
- 46:52they will have to just kind of wander the remains of the earth
- 46:56till the end of time. So the four invaders, they had
- 47:01these visions that led them together and to the cabin.
- 47:04They couldn't explain it, but they just felt compelled to
- 47:07move. They were given these very
- 47:08specific visions of what would happen.
- 47:10They were told how to build the weapons they had, how to get
- 47:13where later on, I think at one point, Sabrina says that they
- 47:17were even wearing the same colors that they had seen each
- 47:20other wearing in their visions. Then we get like this whole long
- 47:22doomsday speech, which Eric says, you know, everything in it
- 47:27sounds really random and vague. And, you know, it's kind of like
- 47:30with a horoscope where like you say these random vague things
- 47:33that are like just specific enough that you're like, oh,
- 47:36that could be me. But like vague enough that they
- 47:39could apply to everyone. It's basically the gist of this
- 47:42speech. And then he was like, so we're
- 47:45gonna ask you, are you willing to sacrifice a member of your
- 47:49family for every No one plague is gonna be unleashed on
- 47:52humanity. And Andrew's like, no.
- 47:57See, yeah, this is one of the things that I really like about
- 47:59this movie, though, is like, it puts you in this perspective.
- 48:03Like, you kind of have to sit there with them and be like,
- 48:05what would I think or say if I were in the situation where four
- 48:10people broke into my house and were forcing me to kill
- 48:15somebody, like one of my family members in order for this to
- 48:18actually happen? I would 100% think that they
- 48:22were having a religiously motivated psychotic break.
- 48:25Yeah, from the get go right here, I would be like, I'm, I'm
- 48:28on Andrew's side at this point because, well, I mean, I guess
- 48:30Erica's too. I mean, it sounds ridiculous.
- 48:33So like, you think that this is just somebody like straight up
- 48:35trying to stage a murder? Yeah.
- 48:38So the first now results in Redmond putting this, like, hood
- 48:42over his face. And he says that he's really
- 48:44scared. And then we see the other three
- 48:47like do this little formation thing and then we cut off to the
- 48:52side as they, like, jab their weapons into his head.
- 48:55I think we at least see it hit his head like somebody takes.
- 48:58I think it's a winner. He takes his axe and like
- 49:00actually hits him right in the head with it.
- 49:02Oh, and beforehand, he says, a part of humanity has been
- 49:06judged. Yeah, that's that's their like
- 49:09final line. Yeah, by by killing these
- 49:11people, they are unleashing one of the fuck?
- 49:16What are they called? Plagues.
- 49:18Yeah, they're unleashing one of the plagues.
- 49:20So they kill Redmond and then he's watching the clock on his
- 49:27watch, and then he's like, all right, turn on the TV.
- 49:29But first we have a flashback to Eric and Andrew adopting when
- 49:34and lying to the adoption agency because they weren't going to
- 49:38let two men adopt A baby together.
- 49:40They're like, oh, my wife can't be here.
- 49:43This is her brother. Wink, wink, nod, nod.
- 49:45Oldest story in the history books?
- 49:47You know Saffo and her friend. Yep, and they pick a little win
- 49:52out. Yeah, say little baby.
- 49:58OK, so then this is where they turned on the TV.
- 50:00They're they're taking the body out, they're cleaning up the
- 50:02blood. And then they put on a TV report
- 50:04of an earthquake that happened 4 hours ago and another earthquake
- 50:08in a Cascadian subduction zone. It was an 8.6 on the Richter
- 50:14scale, which is fucking crazy if you don't remember that piece of
- 50:21social studies. I do not, but I saw on the TV
- 50:26that they had there that it's causing a bunch of tsunamis.
- 50:29So like it's straight up like they're saying no matter how
- 50:32high you go in the mountains, you're going to be fucked.
- 50:34You're just going to die from the waves here because it's just
- 50:36going to go too high. Yeah, because it's also less
- 50:38than 70 miles from the coast. So these tsunamis are just like,
- 50:41absolutely destructive. And apparently it's like,
- 50:45actually one of the areas that they've been predicting like an
- 50:49earthquake is going to cause some great damage is like the
- 50:53volcano and Yellowstone. Like that's going to go off one
- 50:57day and it's going to just fucking be terrible.
- 50:59But see, and then this is another reason why I'm on
- 51:01Andrew's side because this happened hours ago.
- 51:04Like you can't say that it's connected to this quote UN quote
- 51:07sacrifice that just happened. And also, it's in an area that
- 51:11has been predicted by scientists and geologists to be like.
- 51:16That's what I'm saying when I'm saying they give you great
- 51:18reasons to believe both sides. Because when you see this here
- 51:22and you also saw him timing it on the watch, you're like, well,
- 51:25he knew about it. Like there's like that's this is
- 51:27definitely a planned thing. But then like, as things
- 51:30progress, like, it's getting a little bit more difficult to
- 51:34explain how some of this shit's happening.
- 51:36So their next choice is going to be tomorrow and they can, you
- 51:40know, sit as a family tonight and talk.
- 51:43That sucks that you have to wait a whole day to make the choice.
- 51:46Yeah, I do like this little flashback to the family and the
- 51:49cars singing Boogie Shoes. I like that too.
- 51:53That was sweet. And that's, that's just like the
- 51:55things like slice of life moments that those are like core
- 51:58memories that you form with your family, like a little show like
- 52:01that. And it's them arriving at the
- 52:03cabinet that we see them at now. Yeah.
- 52:05And you see, Andrew's a little bit more spontaneous, and Eric's
- 52:09a little bit more like, let's be careful and think through, you
- 52:13know? Let's.
- 52:14Jump in. We're safe.
- 52:16Yeah. Yeah, only at the river, the
- 52:18lake, because, you know, they have a nice ass lake in their
- 52:20backyard. Eric was smart there, though,
- 52:22because he was like, I got a phone in my pocket.
- 52:24Don't need to just be jumping in the water.
- 52:26Yeah, so I've. I've been there, man.
- 52:28It sucks. So Eric is really struggling
- 52:31with his head wound. He has been concussed badly.
- 52:35Oh yeah, and I guess also before then he saw like a glare before
- 52:41they killed Redmond in one of the pictures and he saw like the
- 52:45silhouette of a person. Yeah, but Sabrina had also said
- 52:48that, you know, sensitivity to light is a thing that's common
- 52:51with concussion. Right.
- 52:53But you can tell that it's kind of like he, he doesn't feel like
- 52:57he's conflicted. He feels like that must be it
- 52:59because that's the logical explanation.
- 53:00But then that he saw something like he's pretty sure that there
- 53:03was something there. So Sabrina has taken into the
- 53:07bathroom to try and clean them up a little bit more.
- 53:09She says that she's not religious, but she got these
- 53:11visions and, you know, she built her weapon based on the visions.
- 53:15They were all wearing the colors that they saw in the visions.
- 53:17And she's like, I just don't know what else to do besides,
- 53:21you know, what I'm feeling compelled to do.
- 53:25When he gets back out there, Andrew talks to him and he's
- 53:29like trying to. I think he can see that Eric's a
- 53:34little bit on the fence and Andrew pounces and Eric's like,
- 53:37no, I don't believe them, it's OK.
- 53:38Like calm down. And when takes the opportunity
- 53:43where everybody's backs are turning to sneak out.
- 53:45But Leonard catches her cuz he works with second graders.
- 53:48Yeah. He knows.
- 53:49On that shoe. Yeah.
- 53:50And he brings her back. All right, so they got them all
- 53:54back in there. Andrew is insisting that they're
- 53:56being targeted and this is where he starts to recognize where he
- 54:01thought that he knew Redmond from, and he swears that he's
- 54:06the guy that attacked him at the bar that night.
- 54:09Yeah, he was attacked like 15 years ago or something at a bar
- 54:14in Boston, but the guy's name is O'bannon, and he's like, but no.
- 54:18But if he gained weight and grew out of beard, that would be him,
- 54:22Adrian. That fucking wait, what's he
- 54:27saying? He was fatter in the flashback.
- 54:29No, I think he's gained weight now.
- 54:31Yeah, that's one. OK, that that's rude to Rupert.
- 54:34They straight up like, hey, he's like, it's not as thin as he was
- 54:37back when he was playing and. Well, I didn't say he got fat,
- 54:40they just said he gained weight. Come on.
- 54:43Still, do you want people to say that about like you?
- 54:45You know that's not a nice thing to hear.
- 54:49They're saying something and Adrian mentions that this cabin
- 54:51had been discussed on a message board, which just adds fuel to
- 54:55Andrew's fire. Like you know this, they knew
- 54:58that this cabin was here. They, they, it's a Ding of
- 55:01credibility right there to them, right there.
- 55:02Yeah. And this is where he mentioned
- 55:03that he's a human rights attorney.
- 55:05And he's like, you wouldn't believe some of the things that
- 55:06people are capable of. So now I don't necessarily
- 55:09believe that all of humanity's worth saving.
- 55:11Adrian makes Wen a breakfast burrito and says that that's
- 55:16true test of any chef is being able to cook eggs, which that's
- 55:20funny because it actually came up on my crossword puzzles this
- 55:23weekend. It was like a good test for any
- 55:25chef and it was something about like it was an omelet.
- 55:28Yeah, OK. Yeah, eggs seem like they're
- 55:31super easy to do. Not so much if you want.
- 55:34To do easy, yeah. If you want to do good eggs.
- 55:36I mean I've seen many an episode of Below Deck where the chef has
- 55:40been taken down by egg orders. What is over easy?
- 55:44Who knows, Is it a social construct?
- 55:46Maybe. So have have you talked about
- 55:50Andrew starting to loosen his knot?
- 55:53No, but that is a good point to bring up.
- 55:55He's got like the little nylon rope around his wrist and he's
- 55:59starting to loosen it up some. And when he sneaks, Oh, sorry.
- 56:05Yeah, I was just gonna say he's, like, distracting them while
- 56:07he's loosening it by saying that their message board is an echo
- 56:09chamber. Yeah, Yeah.
- 56:11And it's a shared delusion. And while he's doing that,
- 56:15distracting them from him loosening his knots, but also
- 56:17distracting them from Wen, who has taken her knife from her
- 56:20breakfast burrito and is giving it to Daddy Eric, who says
- 56:24remember what you did at Thanksgiving.
- 56:26If I nod, do that again. I love that.
- 56:28Yeah, that was fun. That's going to pay off in a
- 56:31little bit. And I love the payoff for that
- 56:34is amazing. And I'll talk about why it's
- 56:36amazing. Adrian is up next, and she's
- 56:41really nervous. And this is where she reveals
- 56:43that she has a son. She didn't want to bring him up
- 56:46because she didn't want, I guess, to bump people out or
- 56:49make them think that she was trying too hard.
- 56:52But yeah, she. Here's the thing, she says she's
- 56:58hide visions where he burns alive and that's fucking
- 57:00traumatic. But she also says that she was
- 57:03holding him in those visions and hearing his screams and feeling
- 57:07him dying in her arms. Which, if your visions have led
- 57:11you here to this point, you're either going to walk away and
- 57:15the apocalypse is prevented, or you're going to die as a play is
- 57:19leashed on humanity. Oh, it sounds like.
- 57:22Instantaneous. From the looks of it, it was
- 57:27lightning strikes like whenever it started.
- 57:29But I'm just saying she wouldn't have been there when her son
- 57:33died so either way. I wonder where does this take
- 57:36place at in the movie? Did it say?
- 57:39Pennsylvania, I think Pennsylvania, yeah.
- 57:41She's from DC. So yeah, that's a big drive.
- 57:43Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.
- 57:44Like if, you know, the mission is successful, they sacrifice
- 57:48somebody. Boom, no apocalypse.
- 57:50Her son doesn't die if they don't choose to sacrifice
- 57:53somebody. She's getting sacrificed to ruin
- 57:55the leash a plague so her vision is null and fur regardless.
- 58:01You're right. I didn't even think about that.
- 58:02Yeah, that is weird. So yeah, she can't convince them
- 58:06again. They declined to make a choice,
- 58:08so it's her turn. They kill her.
- 58:11Yeah, which is a shame because she does actually seem like, you
- 58:14know, psychosis or whatever you choose to visions, whatever
- 58:19aside she seems. She seemed, yeah, she seemed
- 58:23nice. She had, like, really weird
- 58:24nervous energy to her. So they turned the TV back on
- 58:27again. Show the next plague.
- 58:29And this is the X9 virus. So it's dangerous to children
- 58:34under 10 or 10 and under. And it's already spread all over
- 58:37the world, cases in many countries, including the United
- 58:40States. Only thing is, though, Andrew
- 58:43reminds Eric is like, this has been going on for like, a little
- 58:47bit now. Like, I've been tracking this
- 58:48virus for months already. So it's not like this is brand
- 58:52new. Yeah, this would have been like,
- 58:54you know, turning on the news around March or so of 2020 and
- 58:59being like, see plague. And I was like, well, we've been
- 59:01reading about this since like, October, November.
- 59:04Yeah, hey, there was some people probably thought the world was
- 59:06ending then too. So yeah, it's highly
- 59:11transmittable, especially amongst children, and there's
- 59:13like 3 pockets in the world where it's like, really?
- 59:15I mean, it's basically. Ramped up right now like.
- 59:18I mean, it's straight up sound like they didn't even really say
- 59:20go into details about it, but it reminded me a lot of that.
- 59:23So Eric tells Andrew that he thinks he saw a figure when
- 59:27Redmond was being sacrificed. Andrew says to breathe.
- 59:34You know there's an explanation for everything they've seen so
- 59:37far. And Eric says I'm clear headed,
- 59:40always together. That's their little like family
- 59:42motto. And then he.
- 59:47He nods at when. Yeah, Andrews tells the tells
- 59:51Leonard and Sabrina they're only talking to him now, not Eric,
- 59:55and Eric turns and nods at when and when.
- 59:57This is why it's a great payoff, because this small child, we
- 1:00:01tend to forget that she's seven years old, because she is.
- 1:00:05An old soul, so to speak, and she's been very level headed and
- 1:00:10quiet and calm and she has a fantastic tantrum.
- 1:00:16She wants to watch. What was it?
- 1:00:19I didn't even write down what it was, but she wanted to watch a
- 1:00:24kids show and she has a full blown tantrum about it.
- 1:00:27Yeah. And while she's doing that and
- 1:00:30Leonard goes into like, I'm a child professional mode and it's
- 1:00:36like trying to talk her and he's like using his stuff.
- 1:00:39He's like, all right, when that's not an option right now,
- 1:00:42here's what we can do. He's like trying to talk her
- 1:00:45through it while Eric and Andrew break out of their bindings
- 1:00:50basically. So Andrew is able to get all the
- 1:00:54way out of his ropes and he runs to the car and Sabrina follows
- 1:00:58and fucking kneecaps him. And then he pocket sands her and
- 1:01:04climbs into the car. And he's like getting into the
- 1:01:07trunk and he's trying to get into the gun safe.
- 1:01:09And then when he gets into the gun safe, he's got to load the
- 1:01:12bullet into the cartridge and the cartridge into the gun and
- 1:01:14the hole in the log in the bottom of the sea.
- 1:01:18But while he's doing that, obviously like Sabrina gets the
- 1:01:22sand out of her eyes and stabs him.
- 1:01:25Yeah, right in the leg. Yeah, And she's, like, stabbing
- 1:01:27him. And he's just, like, still
- 1:01:29loading his gun. And then he turns around and
- 1:01:31he's like, you put it down. And she's like, well, I can't
- 1:01:33beat a gun. And he shoots a warning shot.
- 1:01:35So that way she knows she's, he's serious.
- 1:01:37And she runs away. And so he gets out and he sees
- 1:01:41that his tires are slashed. Fuck.
- 1:01:43But not all four of them. So insurance won't cover it.
- 1:01:47I can't remember, does she come back?
- 1:01:48Yes. OK, inside, Andrew tells Leonard
- 1:01:52to drop his weapon and as he's saying that, Sabrina comes in
- 1:01:57through the back door and he shoots her.
- 1:01:58That's right. Yep.
- 1:01:59So she's dead now. This is where we have a
- 1:02:02flashback to Eric and Andrew having a conversation that
- 1:02:06doesn't need to happen in public or with alcohol 'cause they're
- 1:02:10talking about all the reasons they shouldn't adopt A child.
- 1:02:13They it just starts off with them telling each other harsh.
- 1:02:15Truth. Yeah, Eric is like, you have a
- 1:02:18temper and I'm worried you're going to murder someone and
- 1:02:21Andrew's like you are the buzziest buzzkill that ever
- 1:02:24buzzkilled and we never have fun together.
- 1:02:27Let's have a. Baby.
- 1:02:30Yeah, which, you know, I'm, I'm saying this jokingly, but I do
- 1:02:34think that this is an important exercise that prospective
- 1:02:36parents need to do. They need to figure out like
- 1:02:39what their emotional hang ups are before they create a
- 1:02:41generational trauma. And I appreciate them doing this
- 1:02:44and not reacting negatively to each other because I think even
- 1:02:48at one point where Eric tells Andrew he sucks all the fun out
- 1:02:52of the room, he goes, we said we were going to have qualifiers
- 1:02:55and he goes, sorry, sometimes it feels like you do that.
- 1:03:00So they're just having like a normal conversation.
- 1:03:02They're not being loud or anything.
- 1:03:03And some guy goes, hey, could you guys keep it down?
- 1:03:07And Andrew's like, we're not, we're having a conversation out
- 1:03:11in public, we're not being loud. How about you go sit down and
- 1:03:14shut the fuck up. And then the guy starts to walk
- 1:03:18away, but then he comes back with a bottle and fucking busts
- 1:03:21it up on Andrew. And you can see it's very quick,
- 1:03:26which I like the way that there's just shot because you
- 1:03:28don't get it doesn't linger on his face.
- 1:03:32But with this like hindsight knowledge of this is Redmond AKA
- 1:03:36O'bannon, you can see it. I see they played it smart
- 1:03:41because they give you just enough to like maybe think, but
- 1:03:45also enough to be like, well maybe it's not him because he's
- 1:03:48like all scruffy and stuff. And I'm going to be really
- 1:03:50honest, if I didn't know this is Rupert Grant, I might not have
- 1:03:52known it was Rupert Grant. You know what I mean?
- 1:03:54Like him, all scruffy and in his flannel, with his beard and
- 1:03:57everything like. I you don't get a clear shot of
- 1:03:59him, yeah, it's enough to just be like, well, maybe.
- 1:04:01Like I would, I feel like if I hadn't known, I would have
- 1:04:04watched this movie because I feel like I did that in the
- 1:04:06theater. When we first saw the trailer
- 1:04:08for this, I was like, I don't feel like Rupert Grant's in this
- 1:04:11movie. And I actually had to pull out
- 1:04:13my phone and check IMDb. And I was like, oh, shit, that's
- 1:04:17Ron Weasley. OK.
- 1:04:22But yeah, so then we see them like, you know, he's in the
- 1:04:25hospital and going through rehab.
- 1:04:27And then he starts, like, learning to fight and he gets a
- 1:04:30gun. And basically he's, you know,
- 1:04:32you, you don't need to hear him say that this is never going to
- 1:04:35happen to him again to understand that that's the
- 1:04:38mindset he's going into it with. Yeah, I mean, that was his
- 1:04:41moment right there. That's why I think I killed his.
- 1:04:44Like his belief in other people. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:51I mean, to take what these four horsemen are doing to him.
- 1:04:56Oh my God. Are these flashbacks like kind
- 1:04:58of tying up with them? OK, the flashbacks tying up with
- 1:05:03what the different horsemen represent?
- 1:05:08Cause like we've got the parents that are rejecting them, but
- 1:05:11then we've got the baby they're adopting that would be
- 1:05:14nurturing. We've got him in the hospital
- 1:05:20and training and everything that'll be healing and then they
- 1:05:24adopt. This would be malice though,
- 1:05:26right? Because he did that.
- 1:05:29I would think the parents would be malice and then they've got
- 1:05:33Wen taking her to house. Guidance maybe, I don't know.
- 1:05:37I need more time to sit down with this.
- 1:05:39I can't think this through on air.
- 1:05:40That's that's a possibility. Actually, I I've never, I didn't
- 1:05:43really think about it, but that would make sense for them to do
- 1:05:45that. Well, and the reason that popped
- 1:05:47in my head is I was going to say because you could feel a little
- 1:05:49piece of him died that day. And I was going to say to, you
- 1:05:53know, put it in the words of these invaders like a piece of
- 1:05:56humanity has been judged. And in his eyes that that piece
- 1:06:00of humanity had been judged. But back in present time,
- 1:06:04Leonard is putting a hit on Sabrina and beating her with his
- 1:06:07beaten stick. Cuz you know, it's the ritual
- 1:06:10and can't that's how it goes. Ignore the ritual.
- 1:06:13Gotta kill him, gotta unleash the next plague.
- 1:06:16He moves the body and Andrew goes and gets Redmond's wallet.
- 1:06:21It is O'bannon and he tells Leonard that he's gotta get in
- 1:06:26the bathroom. He's like, you get in the
- 1:06:27bathroom and you're gonna stay in there and we're gonna go and
- 1:06:31steal whatever vehicle you came in in.
- 1:06:33He goes to the bathroom and we immediately hear the window
- 1:06:36bust. And they're like, well, I guess
- 1:06:40we gotta make sure he's still in there so that way he can't
- 1:06:43ambush us outside. And they open the bathroom and
- 1:06:45they don't see Leonard, but they do see a window that Bautista is
- 1:06:51not fitting through. He's not fitting through it.
- 1:06:54It's a perfect circle, but it looked like somebody larger,
- 1:06:58like made their own hole on the way out because it's also
- 1:07:01broken. Yeah, it still doesn't look like
- 1:07:03a big enough opening for him though.
- 1:07:05Probably not. No.
- 1:07:06I would, I mean very much like maybe a different window if
- 1:07:10you're wanting to sell this because he's, he's definitely
- 1:07:13gonna still be in that bathroom. Yeah, and so Andrew, like, takes
- 1:07:16a shot at the shower curtain and then he, like, creeps forward
- 1:07:19and then Leonard grabs. Him dude that was solid on him
- 1:07:22to not react to getting shot behind the curtain.
- 1:07:24There. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:26So yeah, he's just straight up tackles him and now he has the
- 1:07:29gun. Yeah, he makes Air turn on the
- 1:07:32TV and they're seeing multiple planes are crashing at once,
- 1:07:36about 700 of them. Now how you gonna explain that
- 1:07:39one? It could be like a failure in
- 1:07:42the communication system or something in the electrical
- 1:07:45grid. I I can believe that just as
- 1:07:48easily as I can believe the apocalypse.
- 1:07:50That's just like, that's so many different things, like going
- 1:07:55wrong for that all to happen at the same time like that.
- 1:08:01I'm just saying I think a coincidence is just as likely as
- 1:08:05the apocalypse, no matter how fantastical the coincidence is.
- 1:08:09See, this is one of the ones right there where I feel like
- 1:08:11they get you back. Like they pull you back in.
- 1:08:13Like, well, maybe something really is going on because
- 1:08:15that's fucking crazy. Well, then Leonard starts
- 1:08:18quoting along with the anchorwoman as she's talking,
- 1:08:21and he says exactly what she's saying.
- 1:08:23And Andrew says that he just simply cannot believe that this
- 1:08:25is the apocalypse. He will not allow himself to
- 1:08:28believe this. They have a, they have another
- 1:08:30way to debunk it, which is something that I thought of when
- 1:08:32he did this Sue, and that they are pumping these recordings
- 1:08:35into the TV and that he had rehearsed this.
- 1:08:38He knew what it was going to say, which that's like a real
- 1:08:41thing that could be here. Like that is a legit reason to
- 1:08:44maybe think that this isn't actually happening.
- 1:08:47Well he asked him one more time if he wants to, if they're going
- 1:08:52to make a sacrifice and Andrew says no and he goes.
- 1:08:55OK well I want to do this last part outside when I'm gone.
- 1:08:58You only have minutes to stop this.
- 1:09:01They send Wen to the tree house with her headphones and tell her
- 1:09:03not to come down until they get her, and he says all of humanity
- 1:09:11has been judged as he slits his throat.
- 1:09:13And just as he does that, the storm starts.
- 1:09:17Lightning is striking everywhere, the woods are
- 1:09:19starting to catch on fire, and Eric says they still have a few
- 1:09:22minutes. He said that he saw and feels
- 1:09:24that figure, and Andrew admits that he believes what's
- 1:09:30happening, but he also isn't willing to sacrifice any of his
- 1:09:33family. He just wants to leave.
- 1:09:34He wants them to be together even through the end of the
- 1:09:36world in Andrew. This is where he points out that
- 1:09:41they are the Four Horsemen, Redmond, Malice, Adrian,
- 1:09:44Nurturing, Sabrina, Healing, I, wrote Andrew.
- 1:09:48It might have been Andrew, I don't know.
- 1:09:49This feels like more like Eric right here.
- 1:09:53It does feel more like Eric, but.
- 1:09:57No, Yeah, Eric. And since he saw someone in the
- 1:09:59light, Andrew believes wants to ride it out.
- 1:10:02OK, Yeah, I guess I didn't say OK.
- 1:10:04It could have been Andrew. Yeah.
- 1:10:05Yeah, and Leonard is guidance. Oh, it must be Eric's.
- 1:10:09Then I wrote he offers himself, so that has to be OK.
- 1:10:13Yeah. He says he's at peace with it.
- 1:10:16Besides just seeing the figure and feeling the figure, he also
- 1:10:19saw the future with when with her own practice and Andrew
- 1:10:23going out to dinner with her. And they're happy and they're
- 1:10:26thriving and that's all. And that she's got somebody she
- 1:10:30loves. And she learned love from her
- 1:10:32dad. 'S yeah, by the way, the 4th one
- 1:10:35here is like, apparently like God scorches the earth with his
- 1:10:39fingers and what it is, is like lightning bolts are hitting
- 1:10:43everything around. So I guess let's confirm that
- 1:10:46lightning is God's finger. So Andrew and Wen cry together.
- 1:10:53The cabin is on fire so they're walking.
- 1:10:56They can't use their truck because of the tires are
- 1:10:58slashed. So they walk until they find a
- 1:11:00vehicle that the four came in and and it's O'bannon's truck.
- 1:11:04The keys are inside. And it feels like deliberate,
- 1:11:08like it's not even like, oh, some people keep their keys and
- 1:11:11like the visor, like it's like right there in the the center
- 1:11:14console. So they drive out to a diner
- 1:11:17where the news is showing like rescues for all the plane
- 1:11:19crashes. The.
- 1:11:22Tsunami, everything is fine. Yeah, the X9 virus like suddenly
- 1:11:27isn't a problem. So now do you believe?
- 1:11:31No. Even when everything is
- 1:11:33magically going back to normal. I still don't.
- 1:11:36Again, coincidences are just as possible to me.
- 1:11:42They get back in their car and they see like all of the
- 1:11:44paraphernalia from the four that are in there.
- 1:11:46Like this certificate signed by all of Leonard's second grade,
- 1:11:53his after school team that he coaches, Adrian's picture with
- 1:11:57her son, Sabrina's nurse badge. Fuck her family relationships, I
- 1:12:01guess. And they, they find o'bannon's
- 1:12:05like, his gas company. Yeah.
- 1:12:07Card when you're. Yeah.
- 1:12:09So they're about to drive and he turns on the radio and Boogie
- 1:12:13Shoes is playing and they're like, kind of quiet for a
- 1:12:16second. And he turns it off.
- 1:12:18And one turns it back on. And she turns it back off.
- 1:12:22Andrew turns it back on. And that's kind of how it ends.
- 1:12:25That's how it ends. All right, I still, I think it's
- 1:12:30pretty solid and I think an 8 still feels good for me.
- 1:12:39They're going to have a really hard fucking time.
- 1:12:42They need a lot of therapy. Especially when that's one of
- 1:12:44the things I was thinking of the most here is like, yeah, she
- 1:12:47might grow up to have a successful practice, but she's
- 1:12:50going to be emotionally fucked up from all this.
- 1:12:52Yeah, yeah, I'm keeping mine at an 8 too.
- 1:12:55OK, I would have liked to maybe see how the book ending would
- 1:13:00have played out on the screen, like if there's an alternate
- 1:13:02ending type feature. OK, that would be my change
- 1:13:06probably. Well.
- 1:13:07I mean, that's the thing about the ending though, right?
- 1:13:11Like it's like you don't know. So I get what you're saying.
- 1:13:14Like you like you would have liked to have seen it like in
- 1:13:16with. Them not making the choice and
- 1:13:19then them kind of wander out into the world and see what's
- 1:13:22happening, yeah. Yeah, but then you have a kid
- 1:13:23die. Yeah, I mean fuck of a bummer no
- 1:13:29matter what, really. Yeah, it's, it's a dark ending
- 1:13:32no matter what. God, what would I change?
- 1:13:41I I would like to see like the on screen deaths, like you've
- 1:13:45been given the R rating. Go all out with what you can do
- 1:13:49with that. You know, like I, I, that might
- 1:13:53not be his style, but that's still wild to me that you have
- 1:13:56like these things happening. You don't want to show it on
- 1:13:59screen. I'm just speaking as a horror
- 1:14:01fan, you know? Is it that weird?
- 1:14:07I didn't say it was weird. I.
- 1:14:08Don't know, you gave me a look. I didn't give you a look.
- 1:14:11I saw a look. I just like was giggling, that's
- 1:14:14all. OK, so throughout the movie
- 1:14:17Talia was pretty playful, so I think Talia also gives us an 8.
- 1:14:23OK, sounds good. Zoe's ultimate warrior.
- 1:14:27I'm gonna say when, because she held her dad's escape as a
- 1:14:30tantrum, and that's what Zoe's trying to do right now is get
- 1:14:33her away with the. Tantrum.
- 1:14:34She also catches grasshoppers. Exactly.
- 1:14:36And Zoe likes to capture bugs, so I think that that's a fair,
- 1:14:40fair choice. OK.
- 1:14:43All right. Who'd you relate to?
- 1:14:46I mean, I guess I've related to Andrew considering I didn't
- 1:14:49believe any of it. OK, he does end up believing it
- 1:14:52though. I guess that's the difference.
- 1:14:55Does he believe it in the book too?
- 1:14:56I. Don't know.
- 1:14:59OK, I guess I relate to Eric mostly because of that moment
- 1:15:09with him not wanting to jump in the water with, you know, his
- 1:15:12clothes on so he doesn't ruin his electronics because, I mean,
- 1:15:15it's, you know, twenty 20s now we have to worry about that.
- 1:15:19Yeah. OK.
- 1:15:20Just jump in the water all Willy nilly.
- 1:15:22You. Have to worry about that in the
- 1:15:2320 tens too. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:15:27OK, Dream sequel. So you got to choose one.
- 1:15:35Either it happened or it didn't happen.
- 1:15:38Do you want to live in? Do you want to follow them where
- 1:15:40it didn't happen, or do you want to follow where it did happen?
- 1:15:42No, I want, listen, if we're going to lean into supernatural
- 1:15:46shit, let's just lean all the way in.
- 1:15:49They have an opportunity to go back in time.
- 1:15:51What are they going to do? How are they going to change
- 1:15:52their decisions? Wu from Hot Tub Time Machine
- 1:15:55suddenly arrives and he's like, listen guys, I got away.
- 1:15:58Yes, exactly. Yes.
- 1:16:02Is that really what you want? Yeah, time travel.
- 1:16:05I don't want to. I mean, yeah.
- 1:16:10I think it would be interesting to like at least explore the
- 1:16:13fallout that's happening if it's happening.
- 1:16:15But I think if we're going to have like these philosophical
- 1:16:18implications of like what, you know, what are the importance of
- 1:16:22your choices? What's greater the, you know,
- 1:16:26the many or the few? Like if we're going to look at
- 1:16:29that, I think having that time travel angle, do you have a
- 1:16:32chance to go stop? Would you stop?
- 1:16:34Yeah. Would you cause the apocalypse?
- 1:16:36I think it keeps like that question up and coming and then
- 1:16:40like it also takes it from like a you have a second chance of
- 1:16:42this. You've seen the possible
- 1:16:44outcome. Will you still make the same
- 1:16:45choice? That's fair.
- 1:16:47I, you know, I I do kind of like that because it really does.
- 1:16:51It just keeps playing with that premise.
- 1:16:53Yeah. OK.
- 1:16:53That sounds like a solid one. OK.
- 1:16:56Cool. You tagline the cabin was a
- 1:17:02rocking so they came and knocking.
- 1:17:04It's not what you believe in, it's who you believe in.
- 1:17:07OK, that's deep. I was going for a joke and you
- 1:17:10went for a deep one. Hey man, that's just where I'm
- 1:17:14at tonight. OK, well that's our tagline.
- 1:17:19So now it is time for reviews. OK, so I've got our Internet
- 1:17:23review. Pulled one from IMDb from
- 1:17:26somebody that watched it on release.
- 1:17:29So they say first of all, it's rated 2 out of 10.
- 1:17:32OK, Tame and Mild is what it's titled.
- 1:17:36Tame and mild are not words I would use to describe any other
- 1:17:39Shyamalan movie. I don't understand why he takes
- 1:17:41this route with Knock at the Cabin.
- 1:17:43It's not restricted by PG13 rating like so many other horror
- 1:17:46movies from cowardly slash greedy studios.
- 1:17:49Looking at you Megan. So why were there numerous times
- 1:17:53where this movie used strategy seen in PG13 horror flicks?
- 1:17:56Every time there was anything close to violence record, the
- 1:17:59camera cuts away. I don't even know what caused us
- 1:18:02to get an R rating. As for the movie itself, it's
- 1:18:05extremely boring and has a very little of value.
- 1:18:07Nothing stands out, nothing impressed me.
- 1:18:10The film making is more than competent, but there is almost
- 1:18:12no intrigue in the story and it's one of the preachiest
- 1:18:16movies I've seen in a long time. As someone who's been more
- 1:18:20patient than most with Shyamalan flops, that patience is starting
- 1:18:24to dwindle. I'll always be grateful for
- 1:18:27movies like Unbreakable, Split Science, and many others, but I
- 1:18:31hope he can get back on track soon.
- 1:18:34OK. I don't understand, like I I
- 1:18:41agree with the whole it feels PG13 for it to be an RA thing so
- 1:18:46that would be something that I would like to have changed to.
- 1:18:49I feel like the story has a lot of intrigue to it though.
- 1:18:52Like that's the thing. Like it's supposed to keep you
- 1:18:54guessing. That's what I like about this
- 1:18:56movie, is the story of the family.
- 1:18:59That's what draws me to it, is seeing that grow.
- 1:19:04Yeah, I do agree that at times it can be preachy.
- 1:19:08I listen, I don't want to hurt your feelings.
- 1:19:10I don't want to hurt this reviewer's feelings.
- 1:19:12I'm not upset by the lack of onscreen gore.
- 1:19:15I don't think it's always necessary for a horror movie to
- 1:19:18be brutal. Oh, I don't either, But I mean
- 1:19:21like, if you're doing the brutal things, like, you know, like
- 1:19:23you're already doing it. But I I'm just saying like, you
- 1:19:26don't necessarily have to see it to feel it, you know what I
- 1:19:29mean? You don't have to, no, But I,
- 1:19:31yeah, whatever. I guess it's like different,
- 1:19:34it's, you know, for different people.
- 1:19:35I'm one of those people. Like if you like, I like
- 1:19:37watching gory horror movies, you know, that's just my thing.
- 1:19:40So it doesn't have to always be like that.
- 1:19:43But like if you're serving up some gory moments like somebody
- 1:19:46taking makeshift homemade weapons like axes and shit and
- 1:19:50going to like start killing somebody with it, then like,
- 1:19:53sure, let me see what that looks like.
- 1:19:55I don't necessarily know what they're trying to preach about
- 1:19:57too. If you're saying it's preachy,
- 1:19:59like, why like? What what is the message that
- 1:20:04it's trying to get? That you have to believe in
- 1:20:10something bigger than yourself and make decisions that you
- 1:20:13don't always agree with because of the greater good.
- 1:20:15But I think you need to have. I do think sometimes the
- 1:20:21sacrifice is required, but I think it should be.
- 1:20:25This is a very extreme situation though.
- 1:20:27More apparent than what is given here.
- 1:20:30I just don't think it was enough proof for me to want to make
- 1:20:33that. That's fine.
- 1:20:35I was just trying to say earlier I I feel like they give people
- 1:20:39reasons too, and maybe not you, but people like me and people
- 1:20:42like other people out there watching this movie.
- 1:20:44Like a lot is presented in the movie that will bring you back
- 1:20:48and forth where you'll go would. You kill me.
- 1:20:51Well, hold on, man, I'm trying to like get my piece out.
- 1:20:55No, I wouldn't kill you. That's the thing.
- 1:20:57Like it's interesting putting yourself in the shoes of that
- 1:20:59person because the more you see shit like that, like you start
- 1:21:04to question what is actually happening and you have to
- 1:21:09actually start giving serious. Like you have to seriously
- 1:21:12entertain the question at a certain point, once enough proof
- 1:21:16is given to you. And I wouldn't choose you to
- 1:21:20die. I would always choose myself.
- 1:21:23Like I wouldn't want to kill anybody else.
- 1:21:25I'd rather be the sacrifice. So then you want me to murder
- 1:21:27you? And the circumstances of the
- 1:21:32world ending. And it's either me or the entire
- 1:21:37world, yes. I'm not doing it.
- 1:21:39All right, I guess I'm killing you.
- 1:21:43All I'm trying to say is it's an interesting premise and I think
- 1:21:45it's really cool. I think it's really cool that
- 1:21:47the movie does that. Like, I think it's really fun
- 1:21:50for for the believers out there, for people that are able to be
- 1:21:53swayed. And, you know, I feel like
- 1:21:54you'll probably have a, you know, like you, you might have
- 1:21:57more fun if that's the case for you because, you know, you're,
- 1:22:02you're able to switch sides. I thought it was a unique thing.
- 1:22:06Like, it's been a long time since I've had a movie do
- 1:22:08anything like that to me. I do like this movie.
- 1:22:10I do think it was intriguing, but like I said, mostly because
- 1:22:13I I liked the story behind the family that was involved.
- 1:22:17Yeah, and I like that too. And that's what I thought made
- 1:22:19it make such a huge impact is because they build them up so
- 1:22:23well. They do such a good job of
- 1:22:25making you care for them and root for them.
- 1:22:28And then like, it's like, well, fuck, man, they have to do this.
- 1:22:30Like something like they're gonna end up having to actually
- 1:22:33make a choice. OK, I'll.
- 1:22:35I'll move over to listen reviews.
- 1:22:38All right, so we'll start off with our Instagram review from
- 1:22:40Michael E Howard, who says I put off watching Knock at the Cabin
- 1:22:44because I thought it would be just another generic house
- 1:22:46invasion movie. Boy, was I wrong.
- 1:22:49The movie starts slowly, but the tensions build and build right
- 1:22:52up into the end. I cannot even imagine if my
- 1:22:54husband and I were in that situation.
- 1:22:57The cast is amazing as well. And then Shyamalan really did a
- 1:22:59great job on this one. 8.75 out of 10.
- 1:23:02Nice. Yeah.
- 1:23:04I'd see. That's the thing about this is,
- 1:23:06like, the tension really does start to build, like, overtime
- 1:23:09because, like, the six keep getting raised.
- 1:23:11So you see that they're actually killing themselves there too,
- 1:23:14which I think is also a thing that kind of gives them a little
- 1:23:17bit more credibility is like, they're willing to die for this
- 1:23:19also. I think, but I think another
- 1:23:21part of the thing, the other, the flip side of that coin is
- 1:23:24that there's just also enough evidence to think that it's a
- 1:23:28targeted attack because it is somebody who has.
- 1:23:31Yeah, that's been my point, this whole.
- 1:23:32Time attacked Andrew in the past.
- 1:23:36Who's that guy? Like Redmond?
- 1:23:38Yeah. Well, yeah, but not the other
- 1:23:40people like one of them is like a mother the.
- 1:23:42Other is a message board though. Yeah, they could just all be
- 1:23:46like. I know.
- 1:23:47Religious extremists. I I am on the same side as you.
- 1:23:51They give enough deniability there.
- 1:23:53They give reasons for both. I know I was just bringing up a
- 1:23:56point we hadn't really discussed much.
- 1:23:58Oh, I thought that we had discussed that.
- 1:23:59Not really. Really.
- 1:24:01OK, I thought that. I mean, yeah, like, they do a
- 1:24:03great job of doing that. Like, I feel like that is part
- 1:24:06of the tension because it's like, well, shit, are they
- 1:24:08actually there to just kill them?
- 1:24:09Are they really just doing this weird, fucked up thing?
- 1:24:11It's like a cult, OK? Over on Twitter, Chad says
- 1:24:16Batista steals the movie and the first two acts are very tense
- 1:24:19and often touching, and then it totally falls apart in the third
- 1:24:22act. I'm a huge fan of the book, and
- 1:24:24the change that M makes from the book is so much less impactful.
- 1:24:27I hate to judge movies against the book, but in this case I
- 1:24:31just can't help it. I've seen worse in that
- 1:24:34Shyamalan movies, but I've also seen a hell of a lot better.
- 1:24:37I think that's a fair way to put it.
- 1:24:39I've seen worse, but I've seen better I those and was it?
- 1:24:43Did he put in the twist because he needed A twist that there was
- 1:24:47no twist? Was that him being like self
- 1:24:50referential? See, we're we're getting to
- 1:24:52yeah, he's got a When you watch a Shyamalan movie, you get too
- 1:24:55caught up like, well, what's the twist gonna be?
- 1:24:58And like, yeah, like, I guess like this is just a movie.
- 1:25:01It just plays out normally. So like, is that the twist
- 1:25:04itself? Yeah, but I mean, like, did he
- 1:25:07change the ending because he needed it to be unexpected from
- 1:25:10people that were familiar with the book?
- 1:25:11He didn't say that. He said he wanted to change it
- 1:25:13because he wanted to change the tone.
- 1:25:15That's that's what he says. So Kevy Kev says it was
- 1:25:21enjoyable. Batista really stretched his
- 1:25:23acting traps here and everyone else put in the leg break for
- 1:25:26all around fine performances. I'd say seven out 10.
- 1:25:28Not M Night's best film, but a good one.
- 1:25:30OK, yeah. See, I wish I had more to judge
- 1:25:35from him because I have seen this, I've seen the happening
- 1:25:40and I've seen Split, OK. And that's my only exposure to
- 1:25:49Shyamalan. That's a wild he's got no We
- 1:25:52watched the visit together. Oh yeah, the visit, I forgot
- 1:25:54that that was that's a really good.
- 1:25:55One. Yeah.
- 1:25:57Sixth Sense. I know you've never seen it.
- 1:26:00You need to see it. It's such a good movie.
- 1:26:02I'm sure it is. It's just one of those ones
- 1:26:04where people have talked about the ending so much, it's just
- 1:26:06like, why bother? But like, even knowing that,
- 1:26:09like you can still like it's one of those that like going back
- 1:26:11and watching it again, you're like, oh, wow.
- 1:26:13And. It's talking about.
- 1:26:14Great moments in it. I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure that,
- 1:26:16like, the ending isn't the whole thing, but like, with that one
- 1:26:19right there, like I feel like it really lessens the impact and
- 1:26:23like the experience that cheapens the whole thing.
- 1:26:25That's got to suck for a filmmaker.
- 1:26:27Like, your movie's so big that everybody just talks about the
- 1:26:29ending all the times. Like, no, I want people to
- 1:26:31experience it. It's got to suck what Zombie
- 1:26:34says. I saw this at the theaters.
- 1:26:36I thought it was pretty good. The movie didn't move by really
- 1:26:39fast. Wish we could have gotten more
- 1:26:41of the four horse people. There were also like actual
- 1:26:46horse people pack. In the.
- 1:26:49Night Yeah, there were also some dumb decisions by a few
- 1:26:53characters as long as M Night has the village, he really can't
- 1:26:57make anything worse see the. Village is one I haven't seen.
- 1:27:00I know the twist on that one. I do too again.
- 1:27:04I'd probably still watch it. I know the the twist in the
- 1:27:07happening and I still watch that, but that's more 'cause
- 1:27:10it's dumb and I just like to watch Mark Wahlberg go.
- 1:27:12What? No, that's the only reason.
- 1:27:15No, that's. Not a way to convince somebody
- 1:27:17that you're not there to murder them.
- 1:27:19I would be at 200% more positive that you're gonna murder me.
- 1:27:22Yeah, yeah. We might need to expand our We
- 1:27:27need to expand our M night. What a ridiculous movie.
- 1:27:31You know, when you really think about it, it's not that bad.
- 1:27:34It's just how it was executed. See it maybe that's why he
- 1:27:37doesn't do gore cause the one movie that he did a lot of gore
- 1:27:40and he lost like the message. You don't even get gore in that
- 1:27:43though. You just see a lot of people
- 1:27:44like jumping off buildings, you know, you don't see the
- 1:27:47aftermath. That's one that I've always read
- 1:27:52that he it's almost like a malignant situation where he
- 1:27:58wanted it to be super like B movie ask, like he wanted it to
- 1:28:03feel just like a fucking cheap good time.
- 1:28:07And maybe that's just him trying to do a revision of history.
- 1:28:11Like no, that's what I really want it to be.
- 1:28:13But no guys, I swear. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:28:15I feel like it has its own merits.
- 1:28:18Final review, Doctor Aquile Boob.
- 1:28:23He's gotten his doctorate since we last saw this.
- 1:28:25One boob. Just one.
- 1:28:28There's three dots there so maybe there's more to, I don't
- 1:28:31know. I liked it.
- 1:28:32A trippy movie that had you guessing for most of it.
- 1:28:34Those deaths and reveals were pretty brutal.
- 1:28:37Hate that M Night gets flagged for some of his stuff.
- 1:28:39I really like his films. I agree man.
- 1:28:42I feel like it sucks that he kind of is automatically written
- 1:28:45off by some people, but like, he's like, yeah, the movies,
- 1:28:50like The Visit, it's awesome. I think it's, I think it's just
- 1:28:53one of those that like he does a lot of different types of movies
- 1:28:57and his main thing is that, well, there's always going to be
- 1:28:59a twist there and like that's easy to make fun of.
- 1:29:01But he's got like a wide range in his movies.
- 1:29:04And I think our whole discussion about like you thought old
- 1:29:07looked really stupid and I wanted to see it and I thought
- 1:29:09knock at the cabin looked really stupid and you wanted to see it.
- 1:29:12I think it just speaks to like, he can reach a wide audience if
- 1:29:17you're willing to just like, not read him off for being M Night
- 1:29:20Jomalan. Yeah, that's true.
- 1:29:21Which was the lesson I learned this week, brought to you by
- 1:29:24Veggie Tales. Yeah, I, yeah, Like I, I need to
- 1:29:33check some of this stuff out, even in the older shit that I
- 1:29:35haven't seen. I want to watch like those the
- 1:29:38Unbreakable movie with Sam Jackson.
- 1:29:41I can't believe you haven't seen that, honestly.
- 1:29:43I know. Oh, well.
- 1:29:46OK, so that's it for reviews. So that's it for this week's
- 1:29:49episode, everybody. Thank you guys for being here.
- 1:29:52Next week we're getting freaking.
