- 0:00Giving the body the rest and recuperative time it needs, the
- 0:04spiritual aspirant still has to deal with the effects of what is
- 0:08normally a descent into a more temassic state that can have its
- 0:13impacts on the waking consciousness.
- 0:17If we wake up tired, groggy or cloudy, we have not only not
- 0:22fully recharged the body, but we have put a drag on our waking
- 0:27consciousness. How many people need to resort
- 0:31to coffee or tea first thing in the morning so that the caffeine
- 0:35helps to offset the dullness or grogginess?
- 0:39How many people report strange and disorienting dreams that may
- 0:44incorporate various reactions such as fear, desire, sexual
- 0:49pressure, or other elements that represent the otherwise
- 0:54suppressed energies of the lower vital nature?
- 0:57These things can be modified and uplifted.
- 1:02It is a well known phenomenon that an individual can go to
- 1:06sleep with something unresolved on his mind and then wake up
- 1:10with the solution he was seeking.
- 1:13This shows that the consciousness is at work
- 1:16subliminally during sleep and that it can provide positive,
- 1:21not just negative, experiences and results.
- 1:27We know that oftentimes spiritual aspirants report
- 1:30uplifting dreams and experiences in sleep.
- 1:33Sometimes they are visited by a spiritual teacher who imparts
- 1:37various teachings during sleep. Other times they have the
- 1:42experience of flying up into some heavenly realm where they
- 1:46learn about and see things normally restricted from their
- 1:49waking minds. Sometimes they find themselves
- 1:53in a location that has a special healing and uplifting atmosphere
- 1:57during sleep. These experiences provide the
- 2:00encouragement that sleep can undergo changes that can aid the
- 2:05sadhna rather than obstruct or hinder it in some way.
- 2:11The question then comes down to methodology.
- 2:14There are many known methods for improving the quality of sleep.
- 2:19First, the waking mind must be set at rest and not be
- 2:23intoxicated or otherwise impaired.
- 2:28Second, electronic devices that disrupt the normal brain wave
- 2:32patterns should be turned off for some time before bed.
- 2:37Third, taking time for meditation or prayer or a
- 2:41feeling of consecration can set the mood for a peaceful and
- 2:46restful sleep. 4th focusing in aspiration and an affirmation
- 2:53for the sleep to be uplifting or safe in the company of revered
- 2:58teachers in an atmosphere of well-being will help to move the
- 3:03subconscious parts to the desired energetic place. 5th The
- 3:09individual should avoid vitally disruptive atmospheres before
- 3:12sleep, such as night clubs or loud vital venues which leave
- 3:18the nerves frayed and on edge and don't allow the being to
- 3:23relax properly. 6th A calming ritual before bed can help the
- 3:29individual to shed any residual energies of the waking
- 3:32consciousness so that he can move peacefully into the sleep
- 3:37state. 7th Reading some inspirational literature can aid
- 3:43the individual in focusing the mind and quieting it at the same
- 3:47time. 8th Practices such as yoga nidra have been found helpful in
- 3:56systematically relaxing all the muscles of the body and quieting
- 4:00the mind. 9th Not eating too late or too heavy foods or foods
- 4:08that tend to inflamed or dull the system, particularly without
- 4:13sufficient time to digest the food fully prior to bedtime.
- 4:19There are of course many methods and many known practices, and
- 4:24these are simply some illustrations to aid in the
- 4:27process, not at all intended to be fully definitive.
- 4:34Each individual can find out for himself what works best to
- 4:38achieve the desired result, Sriorovindo writes.
- 4:43Quote Sleep cannot be replaced, but it can be changed, for you
- 4:50can become conscious in sleep. If you are thus conscious, then
- 4:55the night can be utilized for a higher working provided the body
- 4:59gets its due rest. For the object of sleep is the
- 5:03body's rest and the renewal of the vital physical force.
- 5:08It is a mistake to deny to the body food and sleep, as some
- 5:12from an ascetic idea or impulse want to do.
- 5:16That only wears out the physical support, and although either the
- 5:21yogic or the vital energy can long keep at work and over
- 5:25strained or declining physical system, a time comes when this
- 5:29drawing is no longer so easy nor perhaps possible.
- 5:35The body should be given what it needs for its own efficient
- 5:38working, moderate but sufficient food, without greed or desire,
- 5:45sufficient sleep but not of the heavy temasek kind.
- 5:50This should be the rule. End Quote reference Srioro
